This paper gives an insight about compression and tension cracks as encountered at a bone-cement interface. Within the context of continuum theory of fracture, an analytical solution is presented for the problem of a bimaterial interface edge crack under uniaxial tension or compression, assuming no tangential slip along the crack faces since cement pedicles penetrate into the cancellous bone several millimeters. Also essential to the solution are cohesive zone effects that account for a strengthening mechanism over the crack faces. The solution provides a methodological framework for quantifying the influence of the cohesive zone on the magnitude of the stress singularity. Mode I crack tip stress intensity factors are calculated at different stages of the loading and unloading phases under uniaxial tension or compression. Finally, an inelastic mechanism is presented that gives theoretical support to explain the formation of interfacial compression cracks, a phenomenon that was not previously appreciated and that arises from the rigid cement being forced into the more compliant cancellous bone.  相似文献

In previous studies, androstenedione (AE) replacement therapy restored the highest levels and intensities of courtship song displays in castrated male zebra finches of any hormone tested. Furthermore, female zebra finches responded strongly to AE-treated males and preferred intact males given small AE implants to unsupplemented males. In this study, we asked whether AE treatment might alter song structure, since male song is an important cue in mate choice by female zebra finches. Songs of adult males were recorded. The males were then castrated and given AE therapy and recorded again. No differences were found between the courtship or undirected songs males sang before castration and after AE treatment. As in previous studies, the structure of a male's courtship song differed significantly from his undirected song, and the structural differences between these two song types were not altered by AE treatment.  相似文献

The analysis of crack growth in titanium was performed using molecular dynamics simulation with Embedded Atom Method potentials. The effect of temperature and strain rate on the mechanism of crack growth and the change of microstructure were discussed. After setting an initial crack, the specimen was subjected to uniaxial tension strain up to the total strain level of 0.2 with a constant strain rate. During the period, the shape and the microstructure of crack tip as well as the stress–strain curves were monitored. In the simulation, the gather of voids and stress concentration leading to the crack growth occurred, which are in agreement with experimental results observed by transmission electron microscopy. The transformation from HCP to BCC also occurred at crack tip. The remarkable effect of temperature and strain rate on the growth direction and rate of stacking fault of crack tip was observed. Moreover, initial crack greatly lowered the tension yield point of pure titanium. In the stage of deformation, simulation results showed that loading strain rate and temperature strongly influenced peak stress point, which was increased by the low temperature and high strain, whereas the initial slope of the stress strain curve was independent of loading strain rate.  相似文献

An axial extensometer able to measure global bone strain magnitudes and rates encountered during physiological activity, and suitable for use in vivo in human subjects, is described. The extensometer uses paired capacitive sensors mounted to intraosseus pins and allows measurement of strain due to bending in the plane of the extensometer as well as uniaxial compression or tension. Data are presented for validation of the device against a surface-mounted strain gage in an acrylic specimen under dynamic four-point bending, with square wave and sinusoidal loading inputs up to 1500 mu epsilon and 20 Hz, representative of physiological strain magnitudes and frequencies. Pearson's correlation coefficient (r) between extensometer and strain gage ranged from 0.960 to 0.999. Mean differences between extensometer and strain gage ranged up to 15.3 mu epsilon. Errors in the extensometer output were directly proportional to the degree of bending that occurs in the specimen, however, these errors were predictable and less than 1 mu epsilon for the loading regime studied. The device is capable of tracking strain rates in excess of 90,000 mu epsilon/s.  相似文献

Activity of the enzyme was increased in segments near the site of compression. The highest activity of the enzyme was in a fraction rich in tubular and vesicular elements resembling those observed in intact compressed nerves. The cold, dry ecosystems of Antarctica have been shown to harbor traces left behind by microbial activity within certain types of rocks, but only two indirect biomarkers of cryptoendolithic activity in the Antarctic cold desert zone have been described to date. These are the geophysical and geochemical bioweathering patterns macroscopically observed in sandstone rock. Here we show that in this extreme environment, minerals are biologically transformed, and as a result, Fe-rich diagenetic minerals in the form of iron hydroxide nanocrystals and biogenic clays are deposited around chasmoendolithic hyphae and bacterial cells. Thus, when microbial life decays, these characteristic neocrystalized minerals act as distinct biomarkers of previous endolithic activity. The ability to recognize these traces may have potential astrobiological implications because the Antarctic Ross Desert is considered a terrestrial analogue of a possible ecosystem on early Mars.  相似文献

We have shown previously (Lomniczi et al., J. Virol. 52:198-205, 1984) that the Bartha vaccine strain of pseudorabies virus has a deletion in the short unique (Us) region of its genome--a deletion that is related to the absence of virus virulence. This strain is, however, also defective in other genes involved in virulence. We show here that virulence can be restored by marker rescue of the Bartha strain to which an intact Us has been restored (but not to the parental Bartha strain) by sequences derived from approximate map units 0.460 and 0.505 of the wild-type virus genome. No difference in the ability to grow in cell culture was observed between parental Bartha, Bartha 43/25a (Bartha to which an intact Us has been restored), or the doubly rescued Bartha strains. However, only the doubly rescued Bartha strain was virulent for both chickens and pigs and replicated to high titers when inoculated directly into the brains of chickens. The sequences that could restore virulence to the Bartha 43/25a strain encode four genes, all of which are involved in processes leading to the assembly of nucleocapsids. Since these sequences rescue virulence, it appears that a function that plays a role in nucleocapsid assembly is defective in the Bartha strain and that this defect contributes to the lack of virulence of this virus.  相似文献

We studied the effect of intact, crushed or sterile cyanobacterial soil crust from the Negev Desert highlands of Israel as substrates for the germination of seeds of three annual plant species from local populations that produce mucilaginous seeds t Plantago coronopus, Reboudia pinnata and t Carrichtera annua. Mucilaginous seeds of these species were wetted on local intact cyanobacterial soil crust which inhibited their germination in comparison with their germination on filter paper. However, the percentage of germination of each species differed on sterile and crushed soil crust after 72 h of wetting. Germination of t Plantago coronopus seeds was inhibited mechanically and biologically on intact soil crust, since it was significantly higher on both crushed and sterile soil crust. Germination of t Reboudia pinnata seeds was slightly mechanically and biologically inhibited on intact soil crust, but germination on live crushed crust was higher than on sterile crushed crust. By contrast, germination of t Carrichtera annua seeds was not mechanically inhibited by live soil crust but there was significant biological acceleration of germination on intact soil crust relative to crushed soil crust. Each of the three species exhibited different requirements for germination. Germination of t P. coronopus is promoted by disturbances and removing the crust components (including its biological and structural effects). t R. pinnata and t C. annua germination is less affected by crust disturbance but is generally inhibited after removing the live components of the cyanobacterial crust.These species differences suggest different functions of the mucilage of the seed coat for the three species.  相似文献

We report that two species of basidiomycete fungi (Polyporus versicolor and Poria monticola) grow in minimal liquid or solid medium when supplemented with crushed lignite coal. The fungi also grow directly on crushed lignite coal. The growth of both fungi was observed qualitatively as the production and extension of hyphae. No fungal growth occurred in minimal agar medium without coal. The fungi degraded solid lignite coal to a black liquid product which never appeared in cultures unless fungi and coal were present together. Apparently, lignite coal can serve as the principal substrate for the growth of the fungi. Infrared analyses of the liquid products of lignite degradation showed both similarities to and differences from the original lignite.  相似文献

Abstract

Some cobbles and pebbles, enclosed in eolian sediment with artifacts, were unweathered and others were very highly weathered. Because the artifacts were tentatively dated as 1 ,000 to 2,000 years old, natural weathering of some of the igneous and metamorphic rocks into masses of loose mineral grains was unlikely. Fragments of igneous boulders, found and broken apart at the site, were heated in the laboratory to 300° C or 500° C and cooled rapidly in water through six cycles. Those fragments heated to 500° C disintegrated into individual mineral grains if fractured mechanically. At the Oakwood Lake site, 66% of the rock arranged into circular patterns appeared to be fire cracked but only 56% of the randomly placed rock had this characteristic. Use of the cobbles and pebbles as “pot boiler” in cooking probably has hastened the natural weathering rate.  相似文献

This paper contains experimental results of in vitro, uniaxial tension of swine brain tissue in finite deformation as well as proposes a new hyper-viscoelastic constitutive model for the brain tissue. The experimental results obtained for two loading velocities, corresponding to strain rates of 0.64 and 0.64 x 10(-2)s(-1), are presented. We believe that these are the first ever experiments of this kind. The applied strain rates were similar to those applied in our previous study, focused on explaining brain tissue properties in compression. The stress-strain curves are convex downward for all extension rates. The tissue response stiffened as the loading speed increased, indicating a strong stress-strain rate dependence. Swine brain tissue was found to be considerably softer in extension than in compression. Previously proposed in the literature brain tissue constitutive models, developed based on experimental data collected in compression are shown to be inadequate to explain tissue behaviour in tension. A new, non-linear, viscoelastic model based on the generalisation of the Ogden strain energy hyper-elastic constitutive equation is proposed. The new model accounts well for brain tissue deformation behaviour in both tension and compression (natural strain in <-0.3,0.2>) for strain rates ranging over five orders of magnitude.  相似文献

Twenty-five fresh frozen flexor digitorum profundus tendons stratified by sex were subjected to uniaxial step stress and cyclic loads in twelve intact human cadaver hands. By attaching specially designed clip strain gage transducers on tendons just proximal and distal to an undisrupted carpal tunnel, the interactions of the tendons, tendon sheath and retinacula were measured. The elastic and viscous response of the tendon composites to step stresses were found to fit fractional power functions of stress and time respectively. A significant and quantifiable decrease in strain from the proximal to the distal tendon segment was found to be a function of wrist deviation. The results indicate that an accumulation of strain does occur in tendinous tissues during physiologic loading.  相似文献

Castrated zebra finches receiving one of six hormone treatments were given three weekly tests with different females and their sexual behavior was contrasted with that of two control groups consisting of intact or castrated males given implants of cholesterol. The six hormone treatments were: two aromatizable androgens, testosterone (T) and androstenedione (AE); two nonaromatizable androgens, androsterone (AN) and dihydrotestosterone (DHT); an estrogen, estradiol (E); or a combination of E + DHT. Half the males receiving DHT received the 5α-isomer, half received the 5β-isomer. Castration significantly reduced the proportion of males which courted females, total courtship displays, high-intensity courtship displays, beak wiping activity, and significantly increased the latencies to show these behaviors compared to intact males. Castrated males never attempted to mount a female. All of these measures of courtship and copulatory behavior were restored to normal levels only by treatments providing both estrogenic and α-androgenic metabolites (i.e., T, AE, E + αDHT). AE was clearly the most effective of these, raising behavior significantly above normal on several measures. AN treatment was more effective than αDHT on all measures and not significantly different from intact birds on some. Treatment with E, αDHT, βDHT, or E + βDHT was totally ineffective. Surprisingly, females only solicited males whose hormone treatments provided estrogenic metabolites. Not only did they solicit males given aromatizable androgens, which showed high rates of courtship activity, they also solicited males given E or E + βDHT, some of which never even courted. Castration and hormone treatment also affected body and syringeal weight, but in opposite directions. Castration increased body weight while decreasing syringeal weight. Hormone treatments providing α-androgenic metabolites decreased body weight and increased syrinx weight. Treatments supplying estrogen as well were slightly more effective.  相似文献

Fruit cuticle composition and their mechanical performance have a special role during ripening because internal pressure is no longer sustained by the degraded cell walls of the pericarp but is directly transmitted to epidermis and cuticle which could eventually crack. We have studied fruit growth, cuticle modifications and its biomechanics, and fruit cracking in tomato; tomato has been considered a model system for studying fleshy fruit growth and ripening. Tomato fruit cracking is a major disorder that causes severe economic losses and, in cherry tomato, crack appearance is limited to the ripening process. As environmental conditions play a crucial role in fruit growing, ripening and cracking, we grow two cherry tomato cultivars in four conditions of radiation and relative humidity (RH). High RH and low radiation decreased the amount of cuticle and cuticle components accumulated. No effect of RH in cuticle biomechanics was detected. However, cracked fruits had a significantly less deformable (lower maximum strain) cuticle than non‐cracked fruits. A significant and continuous fruit growth from mature green to overripe has been detected with special displacement sensors. This growth rate varied among genotypes, with cracking‐sensitive genotypes showing higher growth rates than cracking‐resistant ones. Environmental conditions modified this growth rate during ripening, with higher growing rates under high RH and radiation. These conditions corresponded to those that favored fruit cracking. Fruit growth rate during ripening, probably sustained by an internal turgor pressure, is a key parameter in fruit cracking, because fruits that ripened detached from the vine did not crack.  相似文献

We hypothesize that both compression and elongation stress–strain data should be considered for modeling and simulation of soft tissue indentation. Uniaxial stress–strain data were obtained from in vitro loading experiments of porcine liver tissue. An axisymmetric finite element model was used to simulate liver tissue indentation with tissue material represented by hyperelastic models. The material parameters were derived from uniaxial stress–strain data of compressions, elongations, and combined compression and elongation of porcine liver samples. in vitro indentation tests were used to validate the finite element simulation. Stress–strain data from the simulation with material parameters derived from the combined compression and elongation data match the experimental data best. This is due to its better ability in modeling 3D deformation since the behavior of biological soft tissue under indentation is affected by both its compressive and tensile characteristics. The combined logarithmic and polynomial model is somewhat better than the 5-constant Mooney–Rivlin model as the constitutive model for this indentation simulation.  相似文献

After inoculation of the plasmid-free non-aggregative Ralstonia eutropha -like strain AE815 in activated sludge, followed by reisolation on a selective medium, a mutant strain A3 was obtained, which was characterized by an autoaggregative behaviour. Strain A3 had also acquired an IncP1 plasmid, pLME1, co-aggregated with yeast cells when co-cultured, and stained better with Congo red than did the AE815 strain. Contact angle measurements showed that the mutant strain was considerably more hydrophobic than the parent strain AE815, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed the production of an extracellular substance. A similar hydrophobic mutant (AE176R) could be isolated from the AE815-isogenic R. eutropha -like strain AE176. With the DNA fingerprinting technique repetitive extragenic palindromic-polymerase chain reaction (REP-PCR), no differences between these four strains, AE815, A3, AE176 and AE176R, could be revealed. However, using the amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) DNA fingerprinting technique with three different primer combinations, small but clear reproducible differences between the banding patterns of the autoaggregative mutants and their non-autoaggregative parent strains were observed for each primer set. These studies demonstrate that, upon introduction of a strain in an activated sludge microbial community, minor genetic changes readily occur, which can nevertheless have major consequences for the phenotype of the strain and its aggregation behaviour.  相似文献

The mechanical response of the bovine periodontal ligament (PDL) subjected to uniaxial tension and compression is reported. Several sections normal to the longitudinal axis of bovine incisors and molars were extracted from different depths. Specimens with dimensions 10 x 5 x 2 mm including dentine, PDL and alveolar bone were obtained from these sections. Scanning electron microscopy suggested a strong similarity between the bovine PDL and the human PDL microstructure described in the literature. The prepared specimens were tested in a custom made uniaxial testing machine. They were clamped on their bone and dentine extremities and immersed in a saline solution at 37 degrees C. Stress-strain curves indicated that the PDL is characterized by a non-linear and time-dependent mechanical behaviour with the typical features of collagenous soft tissues. The curves exhibited hysteresis and preconditioning effects. The mechanical parameters evaluated in tension were maximum tangent modulus, strength, maximizer strain and strain energy density. For the molars, all these parameters increased with depth except for the apical region. For the incisors, all parameters increased with depth except ultimate strain which decreased. It was assumed that collagen fibre density and orientation were responsible for these findings.  相似文献

The mechanical properties of cancellous bone and the biological response of the tissue to mechanical loading are related to deformation and strain in the trabeculae during function. Due to the small size of trabeculae, their motion is difficult to measure. To avoid the need to measure trabecular motions during loading the finite element method has been used to estimate trabecular level mechanical deformation. This analytical approach has been empirically successful in that the analytical models are solvable and their results correlate with the macroscopically measured stiffness and strength of bones. The present work is a direct comparison of finite element predictions to measurements of the deformation and strain at near trabecular level. Using the method of digital volume correlation, we measured the deformation and calculated the strain at a resolution approaching the trabecular level for cancellous bone specimens loaded in uniaxial compression. Smoothed results from linearly elastic finite element models of the same mechanical tests were correlated to the empirical three-dimensional (3D) deformation in the direction of loading with a coefficient of determination as high as 97% and a slope of the prediction near one. However, real deformations in the directions perpendicular to the loading direction were not as well predicted by the analytical models. Our results show, that the finite element modeling of the internal deformation and strain in cancellous bone can be accurate in one direction but that this does not ensure accuracy for all deformations and strains.  相似文献

Fifteen features of trace fossils on flysch sandstone soles have been found useful in distinguishing between pre-depositional traces of mud-inhabiting animals and post-depositional traces of sand-dwellers. The Polish Carpathian flysch ichnofauna of 55 genera and 145 species, including 41 ichno-genera that occur at least in part on sandstone soles, is dominated both in number of taxa and number of specimens by traces of mud inhabitants, and most traces, both of mud- and sand-dwellers, were produced by infaunal deposit-feeders. Because mud was the temporally dominant substrate, the mud-dwellers were much more abundant over long periods of time, but the fauna of turbidites and similar sands may have been nearly as diverse and abundant at any given moment as the mud fauna at another. The currents depositing these sands eroded surficial layers of mud and excavated any burrow fillings in almost every case. The flysch ichnofauna differs from observed trace assemblages of modern deep-sea substrates in that the former consists almost exclusively of burrows, while surface traces dominate the latter.  相似文献
