In this study, the effects of maternal age, diet, and size on offspring sex ratio were investigated for the solitary egg parasitoid, Anaphes nitens Girault (Hymenoptera: Mymaridae), both outdoors, during the winter, and inside a climatic chamber under favourable constant conditions. During the winter of 2005–2006, each of seven groups containing 40 1‐day‐old females was mated and randomly distributed among two treatments: (treatment 1) a droplet of undiluted honey ad libitum + one fresh egg capsule of the snout beetle Gonipterus scutellatus Gyllenhal (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) as host; (treatment 2) drops of water + one fresh egg capsule of G. scutellatus. We recorded the lifetime fecundity, the daily sex allocation, and the lifetime offspring sex ratio to study the existence of a relationship with maternal characteristics. Moreover, we assessed the effect of location (outdoors vs. indoors) and group (groups are representative of early, mid, and late winter) on sex ratio. The most important factor that biased the sex ratio was maternal body size: larger females of both treatments produced more female offspring. As females of A. nitens could gain more advantage than males from body size, larger mothers have a higher fitness return if they produce more daughters. The effect of the treatment was significant: starved females produced more females. Location and group were not significant. Fecundity and sex ratio were age dependent. Old mothers that received honey (treatment 1) had fewer offspring and a more male‐biased offspring sex ratio, probably due to reproductive senescence and sperm depletion. Starved females (treatment 2) experienced reproductive decline earlier, perhaps because they invested more energy in maintenance rather than in reproduction.  相似文献

This study tests the hypothesis that female house mice (F1 generation of wild caught Mus domesticus) should preferentially invest in own offspring if confronted with young of different degrees of relatedness. The maternal behaviour of females with litters of 4 own and 4 unrelated alien young (cross-fostered at day 1 of lactation) was analysed during a lactation period of 22 days both under ad libitum and under restricted feeding (food was restricted by 20%). Cross-fostering and restricted feeding had no effect on the amount of time spent nursing until weaning. Under both feeding conditions the females did not differ in their maternal behaviour towards own and alien young: there were no significant differences either in the amount of time spent nursing own versus alien pups or in the time spent licking own versus alien young. Weight gain of own and alien = wild littermates did not differ significantly in mixed litters and was similar both under ad libitum and under restricted feeding. Such indiscriminate behaviour might be adaptive if female house mice prefer to communally nest with a relative and thus improve their inclusive fitness by investing in own and related offspring in a communal nest. Under moderate restricted feeding females could not wean the entire litter but reduced litter size by cannibalizing on average 2.7 pups (75% of the pups were killed when they were 4–8 days old). Females with cross-fostered litters killed as many own as alien young. This suggests that females cannot discriminate between own and unrelated young if cross-fostering takes place at day 1 of lactation. Besides testing kin recognition abilities, the experiments also allow analysis of the weaning strategy of females under food shortage. Under restricted feeding, body weight of the females was significantly lower during middle lactation than under ad libitum feeding. Weaning weight of young in reduced litters under food restriction (9–10 g) did not differ significantly from weaning weight of young in litters of 7–10 young, but was lower than that of young in similar sized litters (litter size 6), under ad libitum feeding. The maternal behaviour of cannibalizing some young under food shortage can be interpreted as a weaning strategy which results in the largest number of offspring that can be raised to a minimal weaning weight of 9–10 g. Such a weaning strategy might represent a favourable trade-off between number and size of young produced.  相似文献

Phenotypic plasticity in life history traits favors the establishment of invaders and may magnify their ecological impacts. Pomacea canaliculata, the only freshwater snail listed among the 100 worst invaders worldwide, is able to complete its life cycle within a wide range of conditions, a capacity attributed to its life history plasticity. Using snails from their native range in Argentina we investigated the changes in fecundity, egg mass traits, offspring quality, and efficiency of food conversion into eggs in response to different levels of food availability throughout different life stages. Pre-maturity mortality was not affected by chronic reductions of up to 80% in food availability. Females fed ad libitum demonstrated no significant reproductive output differences when mated with males raised at different food availability levels. For females, the number and total weight of eggs and the size of egg masses decreased at high levels of food deprivation. Their efficiency of conversion into eggs of the food ingested during the reproductive period increased with deprivation, as did the survival time of their offspring. In contrast, the egg mass laying rate and the individual egg weight did not differ under different food availability regimes. Reductions in food availability have been suggested as a control method but our results indicate that fecundity would be lessened only at deprivation levels higher than 50% and would be partially compensated by an increase in hatchling survival.  相似文献

In mammals, maternal food restriction around conception and during pregnancy results in low birth weight and an adjusted growth trajectory of offspring. If, subsequently, the offspring are born into a food-abundant environment, they are at increased risk of developing obesity, type 2 diabetes, hypertension and renal dysfunction. Here, we show similar effects of maternal undernutrition on hatch weight, growth and fat deposition in offspring of birds (domestic chicken). Both mothers and offspring were fed either ad libitum or restricted in a two-by-two factorial design, resulting in two matched and two mismatched maternal-offspring nutritional environments. Offspring of ad libitum mothers grew heavier than those of restricted mothers, possibly due to the larger muscle mass. Ad libitum-fed offspring, especially females, of restricted mothers were lighter at hatch, and were heavier and had more abdominal fat at 6 weeks of age than daughters of ad libitum-fed mothers. These results suggest a common mechanism in mammals and birds in response to a mismatch in the maternal-offspring nutritional environment. They also indicate that the common practice of restrictive feeding of the broiler breeders and subsequent ad libitum feeding of the broilers may result in reduced growth and increased abdominal fat as compared to broilers of less restricted broiler breeders.  相似文献

Summary Direct and correlated responses in weight gain and body weights were assessed for nine generations of within-family selection. Four selection criteria were used: gain between 28 and 38 or 48 and 58 days of age, and under two feeding regimes, i.e. ad libitum consumption or 80% of the control line. Direct responses to selection and realized heritabilities in the ad libitum lines were greater in the first period. Weight gain under ad libitum feeding at later ages appeared to have a lower genetic variability. In the restricted lines the responses and realized heritabilities were higher in the second period. Selection under restricted feeding in both periods led to animals that had lower weight gains than the control line when compared under ad libitum feeding.  相似文献

Male California voles were maintained in long (14L:10D) or short photoperiods (10L:14D) for 10 weeks and fed a standard diet of rabbit chow and water ad libitum. One additional group in each photoperiod received the standard diet plus supplements of spinach 3 times weekly. A fifth group was housed in 14L:10D and fed the standard diet, but for 10 weeks water availability was restricted to several hours each morning. Testes and seminal vesicles were heaviest in long-day voles fed spinach supplements and lightest in short-day voles fed only the standard diet; the latter animals manifested reduced testicular spermatogenesis. Testicular weights were also depressed in voles with restricted access to water. It is suggested that photoperiods that simulate those of winter induce regression of the reproductive organs of male California voles but the availability of green vegetation counteracts the inhibitory effects of short daylengths.  相似文献

Summary Differences in maternal investment and initial offspring size can have important consequences for offspring growth and development. To examine the effects of initial size variability in the frogBombina orientalis, we reared larvae (N=360) in one of two treatments representing different levels of environmental quality. We used snout-vent length at the feeding stage (stage 25, Gosner 1960) as a measure of maternal investment. In a “low quality” treatment, larvae were reared with two conspecific tadpoles and food was limited, whereas in a “high quality” treatment, larvae were reared individually and were fed ad libitum. Among tadpoles reared in the low quality treatment, individuals that were initially small had smaller body sizes through metamorphosis and longer larval periods than individuals that were initially large. Among tadpoles reared in the high quality treatment, initial size had only a weak influence on later larval size, and did not significantly affect metamorphic size of the duration of the larval period. This interaction between maternal investment and rearing conditions suggests that production of initially small offspring could be advantageous if these offspring develop in relatively benign environments, but disadvantageous if environments are more severe. These findings are discussed in light of previous studies that have demonstrated such interactions in organisms with complex life cycles.  相似文献

The influence of age and food restriction on kidney protein synthesis was studied in Fischer F344 rats. The rate of total protein synthesis by suspensions of kidney cells declined 60% between 4 and 31 months of age. The rate of protein synthesis by kidney cells isolated from 19-month old rats fed a restricted diet (60% of diet consumed by rats fed ad libitum) was 45% higher than the rate of protein synthesis by kidney cells isolated from 19-month old rats fed ad libitum. The excretion of protein in the urine was measured to assess the effect of the age related decline in protein synthesis on kidney function. A dramatic increase in proteinuria was observed with increasing age, and rats fed the restricted diet excreted significantly less protein in the urine than rats fed ad libitum.  相似文献

Three tame, hand-reared adult roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) were fed a low-quality diet (blueberry stems) or high-quality concentrate either restricted or ad libitum in summer and winter. Total mean retention time (TMRT) and rumen retention time (RRT) were significantly longer, indigestible fill was significantly higher and apparent digestibility and intake were significantly lower when fed blueberry stems compared to concentrate. The feeding regimes of concentrate did not affect the digesta kinetic estimates, except that total fill and apprent digestibility were significantly higher when deer were fed ad libitum than when they were fed a restricted ration. TMRT was significantly longer when they were fed a restricted ration of blueberry stems than for ad libitum intake, whereas all other estimates were equal. Intake was significantly higher and TMRT and RRT were significantly shorter in summer compared to winter when they were fed concentrate. These findings support the theory that roe deer, as small-bodied concentrate selectors, are adapted to high intake, rapid turnover, and rapid digestion when fed high-quality concentrate. When fed a low-quality diet the roe deer may be limited by rumen bulk. A strategy based on increased rumen retention accompanied by increased cell-wall digestion has therefore severe limitations in roe deer. This indicates that roe deer are dependent on a selective feeding strategy to enhance winter survival.  相似文献

The basal cell density (BCD), labelling index (LI), duration of DNA synthesis (TS) and cell cycle time (TC) have been calculated for the epidermis of pigs in the age range 4-27 months. The BCD declined progressively from 143.4 +/- 6.5 cells/mm at 4 months to 128.8 +/- 8.3 cells/mm at 15 months, whereafter the values showed little change. There was a small decrease in LI with increasing age, from 7.9 +/- 1.5% at 4 months to 5.9 +/- 1.0% at 27 months. However, the change to housing animals outdoors as compared with indoors had a greater effect on the LI (approximately 10%). Severe weathering in the skin of animals housed outdoors resulted in a very high LI (approximately 20%). Neither TS or TC varied significantly with age. TS was within the range 8.8-9.2 hr and TC 127-161 hr. In animals housed outdoors TC was reduced relative to animals housed indoors. The BCD and TS were not affected by housing conditions. The kinetic parameters investigated in the pig were similar to those reported for man.  相似文献

The discovery of a link between in utero experience and later metabolic and cardiovascular disease is one of the most important advances in epidemiology research of recent years. There is now increasing evidence that alterations in the fetal environment have long-term consequences on metabolic and endocrine pathophysiology in adult life. This process has been termed "fetal programming," and we have shown that undernutrition of the mother during gestation leads to obesity, hypertension, hyperphagia, hyperinsulinemia, and hyperleptinemia in offspring. Using this model of maternal undernutrition throughout pregnancy, we investigated whether prenatal influences may lead to alterations in postnatal locomotor behavior, independent of postnatal nutrition. Virgin Wistar rats were time mated and randomly assigned to receive food either ad libitum (ad libitum group) or at 30% of ad libitum intake (undernourished group). Offspring from UN mothers were significantly smaller at birth than AD offspring. At weaning, offspring were assigned to one of two diets [control or hypercaloric (30% fat)]. At ages of 35 days, 145 days, and 420 days, voluntary locomotor activity was assessed. At all ages studied, offspring from undernourished mothers were significantly less active than offspring born of normal birth weight for all parameters measured, independent of postnatal nutrition. Sedentary behavior in programmed offspring was exacerbated by postnatal hypercaloric nutrition. This work is the first to clearly separate prenatal from postnatal effects and shows that lifestyle choices themselves may have a prenatal origin. We have shown that predispositions to obesity, altered eating behavior, and sedentary activity are linked and occur independently of postnatal hypercaloric nutrition. Moreover, the prenatal influence may be permanent as offspring of undernourished mothers were still significantly less active compared with normal offspring at an advanced adult age, even in the presence of a healthy diet throughout postnatal life.  相似文献

We previously reported that the half-life of protein degradation in cells from old mice is about 50% longer than that in cells from young or middle-aged ones. In the present study we investigated the degradation rate of microinjected proteins (horseradish peroxidase (HRP) and ovalbumin (OVA] and pulse-labeled proteins in hepatocytes from dietary-restricted old mice. Dietary restriction was initiated when mice were 23 months of age and performed in two steps (first 80% and then 60% of the ad libitum intake), the total period being 70 days. Hepatocytes were isolated from mice fed a restricted diet and fed ad libitum. The half-lives of HRP, OVA, and pulse-labelled proteins in the hepatocytes from mice fed a restricted diet were about 40% shorter than those in the cells from mice fed ad libitum. These values were close to those in the cells of young animals. These results are discussed in relation to our previous findings that a similar regimen reduces the percentage of heat-labile enzymes accumulated in tissues of aged animals.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was threefold: 1. to determine the long-term effects of interactions between lactational zinc deficiency and gender on bone mineral composition in repleted rat offspring, 2. to determine the nutritional efficacy of the second of two commercially designed, modified Luecke diets (ML2) during the gestational and lactational stress, and 3. determine the ultratrace element contents of Ralston Rodent Laboratory Chow #5001. The ML2 basal diet, based on dextrose, sprayed egg white, and corn oil contained 0.420 μg Zn/g, was supplemented with Zn (as zinc acetate) at 0 (diet 0ML2) or 30 (diet 30ML2) μg/g, and was mixed and pelleted commercially. all rat dams were fed the 30ML2 diet ad libitum during gestation. Beginning at parturition, the dams were fed either the 1. 0ML2, 2. 30ML2 (food restricted), or 3. 30ML2 (ad libitum) diets. All pups were fed the 30ML2 diet ad libitum from 23 to 40 d of age. From d 40 to 150, all pups were fed Ralston Rodent Laboratory Chow. The 30ML2 diet was found to be nutritionally efficacious; litter size and pup growth were normal and pup mortality was only 1.2%. Pups (ZD) with access to the 0ML2 diet until 23 d of age and nursed by dams fed the 0ML2 diet, when compared to pups (PF) fed restricted amounts of the 30ML2 diet, exhibited increased mortality and decreased concentrations of tibial zinc but no change in growth. Inadequate zinc nutriture during infancy, despite postlactational zinc repletion, induced imbalances in adult bone mineral metabolism. Thus, at 150 d of age, the ZD pups exhibited increased levels of bone P and Mg and decreased concentrations of K as compared to the PF pups.  相似文献

Circulating concentrations of prolactin were monitored for 3 yr in intact ewes kept either outdoors or indoors in a fixed equatorial photoperiod (12L:12D) and restricted range of environmental temperatures. Prolactin data were analyzed by spectral analysis. In all ewes kept outdoors, concentrations of prolactin showed robust circannual rhythms with a single predominant period of 359 days. In ewes kept indoors, the range of significant periods varied from 35 to 532 days. Although all ewes kept indoors showed a significant rhythm with a period of 354 days, this clearly was not the predominant period in all. The amplitude of the rhythm in ewes kept indoors was significantly lower (p less than 0.01) than that of ewes kept outdoors. Although the annual rhythm of circulating prolactin typical of ewes kept outdoors was significantly compromised in animals kept under a constant 12L:12D photoperiod and restricted environmental temperature range, there was evidence of an endogenous circannual rhythm.  相似文献

A better understanding of how livestock respond to weather is essential to enable farming to adapt to a changing climate. Climate change is mainly expected to impact dairy cattle through heat stress and an increase in the frequency of extreme weather events. We investigated the effects of weather on milk yield and composition (fat and protein content) in an experimental dairy herd in Scotland over 21 years. Holstein Friesian cows were either housed indoors in winter and grazed over the summer or were continuously housed. Milk yield was measured daily, resulting in 762 786 test day records from 1369 individuals, and fat and protein percentage were sampled once a week, giving 89 331 records from 1220 cows/trait. The relative influence of 11 weather elements, measured from local outdoor weather stations, and two indices of temperature and humidity (THI), indicators of heat stress, were compared using separate maximum likelihood models for each element or index. Models containing a direct measure of temperature (dry bulb, wet bulb, grass or soil temperature) or a THI provided the best fits to milk yield and fat data; wind speed and the number of hours of sunshine were most important in explaining protein content. Weather elements summarised across a week’s timescale from the test day usually explained milk yield and fat content better than shorter-scale (3 day, test day, test day −1) metrics. Then, examining a subset of key weather variables using restricted maximum likelihood, we found that THI, wind speed and the number of hours of sunshine influenced milk yield and composition. The shape and magnitude of these effects depended on whether animals were inside or outside on the test day. The milk yield of cows outdoors was lower at the extremes of THI than at average values, and the highest yields were obtained when THI, recorded at 0900 h, was 55 units. Cows indoors decreased milk yield as THI increased. Fat content was lower at higher THIs than at intermediate THIs in both environments. Protein content decreased as THI increased in animals kept indoors and outdoors, and the rate of decrease was greater when animals were outside than when they were inside. Moderate wind speeds appeared to alleviate heat stress. These results show that milk yield and composition are impacted at the upper extreme of THI under conditions currently experienced in Scotland, where animals have so far experienced little pressure to adapt to heat stress.  相似文献

Amylin infusion reduces food intake and slows body weight gain in rodents. In obese male rats, amylin (but not pair feeding) caused a preferential reduction of fat mass with protein preservation despite equal body weight loss in amylin-treated (fed ad libitum) and pair-fed rats. In the present study, the effect of prior or concurrent food restriction on the ability of amylin to cause weight loss was evaluated. Retired female breeder rats were maintained on a high-fat diet (40% fat) for 9 wk. Prior to drug treatment, rats were either fed ad libitum or food restricted for 10 days to lose 5% of their starting body weight. They were then subdivided into treatment groups that received either vehicle or amylin (100 microgxkg(-1)xday(-1) via subcutaneous minipump) and placed under either a restricted or ad libitum feeding schedule (for a total of 8 treatment arms). Amylin 1) significantly reduced body weight compared with vehicle under all treatment conditions, except in always restricted animals, 2) significantly decreased percent body fat in all groups, and 3) preserved lean mass in all groups. These results indicate that amylin's anorexigenic and fat-specific weight loss properties can be extended to a variety of nutritive states in female rats.  相似文献

We aimed to assess the lasting effects of moderate caloric restriction in lactating rats on the expression of key genes involved in energy balance of their adult offspring (CR) and their adaptations under high-fat (HF) diet. Dams were fed with either ad libitum normal-fat (NF) diet or a 30% caloric restricted diet throughout lactation. After weaning, the offspring were fed with NF diet until the age of 15 weeks and then with an NF or a HF diet until the age of 28 weeks, when they were sacrificed. Body weight and food intake were followed. Blood parameters and the expression of selected genes in hypothalamus and white adipose tissue (WAT) were analysed. CR ate fewer calories and showed lower body weight gain under HF diet than their controls. CR males were also resistant to the increase of insulin and leptin occurring in their controls under HF diet, and HF diet exposed CR females showed lower circulating fasting triglyceride levels than controls. In the hypothalamus, CR males had higher ObRb mRNA levels than controls, and CR females displayed greater InsR mRNA levels than controls and decreased neuropeptide Y mRNA levels when exposed to HF diet. CR males maintained WAT capacity of fat uptake and storage and of fatty-acid oxidation under HF diet, whereas these capacities were impaired in controls; female CR showed higher WAT ObRb mRNA levels than controls. These results suggest that 30% caloric restriction in lactating dams ameliorates diet-induced obesity in their offspring by enhancing their sensitivity to insulin and leptin signaling, but in a gender-dependent manner.  相似文献

Food shortage is an important selective factor shaping animal life‐history trajectories. Yet, despite its role, many aspects of the interaction between parental and offspring food environments remain unclear. In this study, we measured developmental plasticity in response to food availability over two generations and tested the relative contribution of paternal and maternal food availability to the performance of offspring reared under matched and mismatched food environments. We applied a cross‐generational split‐brood design using the springtail Orchesella cincta, which is found in the litter layer of temperate forests. The results show adverse effects of food limitation on several life‐history traits and reproductive performance of both parental sexes. Food conditions of both parents contributed to the offspring phenotypic variation, providing evidence for transgenerational effects of diet. Parental diet influenced sons’ age at maturity and daughters’ weight at maturity. Specifically, being born to food‐restricted parents allowed offspring to alleviate the adverse effects of food limitation, without reducing their performance under well‐fed conditions. Thus, parents raised on a poor diet primed their offspring for a more efficient resource use. However, a mismatch between maternal and offspring food environments generated sex‐specific adverse effects: female offspring born to well‐fed mothers showed a decreased flexibility to deal with low‐food conditions. Notably, these maternal effects of food availability were not observed in the sons. Finally, we found that the relationship between age and size at maturity differed between males and females and showed that offspring life‐history strategies in O. cincta are primed differently by the parents.  相似文献

Metabolic and hormonal responses of eight adult male collared peccaries (Tayassu tajacu) to an ad libitum diet intake, or 25% of an ad libitum intake, were examined. Blood samples for hematological, serum-biochemical and hormonal profiles were collected at three week intervals during the nine week experiment starting 4 August 1983. Males fed on the restricted diet lost an average of 26% of their body weight during the trial, compared to a slight weight gain for those fed ad libitum. Characteristics of the red and white blood cell populations were not influenced by diet intake, with the exception of mean corpuscular volume, which was consistently lower amongst males fed on the restricted diet. Restricted food intake resulted in significantly elevated serum values for urea nitrogen, urea nitrogen:creatinine, urea index, alpha globulin:beta globulin, gamma globulin:albumin, nonesterified fatty acids, alkaline phosphatase and lactate dehydrogenase isozymes (LD1 and LD2). Restricted food intake resulted in significantly lowered serum values for total alpha globulin, alpha-1 globulin, total beta globulin, beta-1 globulin, beta-2 globulin, glucose, triglycerides, calcium, magnesium, sodium, chloride, copper and triiodothyronine. Serum levels of creatinine, total protein, albumin, alpha-2 globulin, uric acid, total bilirubin, cholesterol, aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, gamma glutamyltransferase, lactate dehydrogenase, phosphorus, calcium:phosphorus, potassium, iron, zinc and thyroxine were unaffected by diet intake level. Semen evaluation indicated spermatogenesis was not affected by dietary restriction despite reductions in scrotal circumference and ejaculate gel volume. Serum testosterone levels were significantly lower among males fed on the restricted diet after nine weeks. These data suggest male libido might be depressed during poor range conditions, while maintenance of spermatogenesis might permit them to take immediate advantage of improved range conditions. Blood analysis of metabolic and hormonal function can provide useful information for predicting the adult male's nutritional and reproductive condition.  相似文献
