Habitat choice in relation to environmental factors of two coexisting calanoid copepod species, Eudiaptomus gracilis and E. graciloides, was studied in a mesotrophic lake and in large indoor mesocosms. Both species and sexes showed pronounced diel vertical migration (DVM) in the field. In 12 m deep mesocosms with free ranging fish DVM was observed and species increased day depth over time. No changes were observed in copepod day depth over time in experiments with fish kairomone. It is hypothesized that fish kairomone acts as an early warning system to copepods which respond by moving deeper, but only as far as the thermocline. For full DVM, a nearby mechanical stimulus is necessary. Thus, as fish go deeper to feed, copepods retreat. The response of copepods to fish predation, in the presence of low and high numbers of Daphnia, shows that copepods effectively use Daphniaas living shields to avoid predation. The two species adopt different vertical migration strategies depending on whether there are high or low numbers of Daphniapresent. A dominant feature of mesocosm experiments was the night time aggregating (lekking) of E. gracilis males at the surface. When the spring and autumn percentages of risk takers in the epilimnion were compared, E. gracilis, particularly males, suffered the greatest cost.  相似文献

We compared the shoaling behaviour of three-spined sticklebacks, Gasterosteus aculeatus, infected with the microsporidian, Glugea anomala, to that of non-infected conspecifics. Infected fish lost significantly more weight than non-infected fish during a period of food deprivation, suggesting a metabolic cost to parasitism. In binary shoal choice tests, non-infected test fish showed an association preference for a shoal of non-infected over a shoal of infected conspecifics; infected test fish displayed no preference. Infected fish, however, showed a higher overall tendency to shoal than non-parasitised fish. Furthermore, infected fish occupied front positions within a mixed school. We consider the behavioural differences between infected and uninfected fish in the context of their potential benefits to the fish hosts and the parasites.  相似文献

The structural integrity of Cryptosporidium oocysts and Giardia cysts in the Norwegian winter environment was investigated. During winter 2001/2002, Cryptosporidium oocysts and Giardia cysts were placed in the upper layers of soil in different matrices contained in chambers and exposed to the Norwegian climate. Morphological characteristics and inclusion/exclusion of vital dyes were monitored and compared to refrigerated controls. Reduction in parasite numbers was recorded for all parasites, geographical locations, and matrices. Shear forces generated during freeze–thaw cycles are postulated to have disintegrated the parasites exposed to the Norwegian winter and retrospective laboratory studies support this theory. Increased dye inclusion, possibly indicative of viability loss, was also noted. The refrigerated control parasites exhibited no decline in numbers, and alteration in dye inclusion characteristics for refrigerated parasites was slower. Cryptosporidium oocysts were apparently more robust than Giardia cysts; differences between isolates were also noted. These results suggest Cryptosporidium oocysts and Giardia cysts do not persist in the Norwegian terrestrial environment over winter, and when detected, will have been excreted since the previous winter. Differences in the morphological characteristics, matrix effects, and the possible relationship of the dye data to parasite survival are discussed in relation to further studies.  相似文献

The biomagnification of methylmercury (MeHg) amongst trophic levels results in high levels of this compound in many freshwater fish species. The role of parasites in MeHg cycling and trophic transfer in freshwater systems is largely unknown. This study examined the potential for metacercariae of Apophallus brevis to accumulate and biomagnify MeHg from their second intermediate host, yellow perch, Perca flavescens. Contrary to our prediction that MeHg levels would be higher in parasites than in the host muscle tissue in which they are embedded, we found that concentrations were similar. The lack of increase in MeHg levels from host to parasite may be due to limited assimilation of host muscle tissue or, in part, to low parasite metabolism. Parasite load did not reduce fish growth and subsequently alter MeHg concentrations. This study suggests that relationships between larval parasites and their hosts do not conform to typical patterns of MeHg biomagnification seen in aquatic systems.  相似文献

Toxoplasma gondii is an intracellular parasite able to both promote and inhibit apoptosis. T. gondii renders infected cells resistant to programmed cell death induced by multiple apoptotic triggers. On the other hand, increased apoptosis of immune cells after in vivo infection with T. gondii may suppress the immune response to the parasite. Glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI)-anchored proteins dominate the surface of T. gondii tachyzoites and GPIs are involved in the pathogenicity of protozoan parasites. In this report, we determine if GPIs are responsible for inhibition or induction of host cell apoptosis. We show here that T. gondii GPIs fail to block apoptosis that was triggered in human-derived cells via extrinsic or intrinsic apoptotic pathways. Furthermore, characteristics of apoptosis, e.g. caspase-3/7 activity, phosphatidylserine exposition at the cell surface or DNA strand breaks, were not observed in the presence of T. gondii GPIs. These results indicate that T. gondii GPIs are not involved in survival or in apoptosis of host cells. This absence of effect on apoptosis could be a feature common to GPIs of other parasites.  相似文献

A video camera inside an underwater housing was used to record the spawning activities of lake trout, Salvelinus namaycush, in Kushog Lake, Ontario (Canada). Contrary to the commonly accepted belief describing lake trout as the only salmonine to spawn exclusively at night, the recordings were taken during the day. Lake trout spawning behaviour is described in detail and compared with other salmonine species. The loss of female “nest-building” and assumption of a novel itinerant strategy during which females travel across the breeding grounds accompanied by a group of males, is considered to be an important change in the evolution of the lake trout’s unique mode of spawning.  相似文献

Polar bears, Ursus maritimus, throughout their range, are nutritionally dependent on ringed (Phoca hispida) and bearded seals (Erignathus barbatus), which are predominantly caught on the sea ice. Other marine prey species are caught and consumed, but less frequently. As the annual sea ice retreats, polar bears throughout their range are forced ashore, where they mostly live off their stored adipose tissue. However, while land-bound they have been observed catching birds and terrestrial mammals. Although polar bears evolved from brown bears (U. arctos), direct observations of polar bears diving for and catching fish have not been reported. Here, we document observations of a young male polar bear catching Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus) and Fourhorn sculpin (Myoxocephalus quadricornis) by diving in Creswell Bay, Nunavut. We recorded six search bouts, where six fish were caught during dives, which were preceded by a snorkel. The average dive and snorkel length was (mean ± SD) 13 ± 5 and 6 ± 2 s, respectively.  相似文献

In natural host populations, parasitism is considered to be omnipresent and to play an important role in shaping host life history and population dynamics. Here, we study parasitism in natural populations of the zooplankton host Daphnia magna investigating their individual and population level effects during a 2-year field study. Our results revealed a rich and highly prevalent community of parasites, with eight endoparasite species (four microsporidia, one amoeba, two bacteria and one nematode) and six epibionts (belonging to five different taxa: Chlorophyta, Bacillariophyceae, Ciliata, Fungi and Rotifera). Several of the endoparasites were associated with a severe overall fecundity reduction of the hosts, while such effects were not seen for epibionts. In particular, infections by Pasteuria ramosa, White Fat Cell Disease and Flabelliforma magnivora were strongly associated with a reduction in overall D. magna fecundity. Across the sampling period, average population fecundity of D. magna was negatively associated with overall infection intensity and total endoparasite richness. Population density of D. magna was negatively correlated to overall endoparasite prevalence and positively correlated with epibiont richness. Finally, the reduction in host fecundity caused by different parasite species was negatively correlated to both parasite prevalence and the length of the time period during which the parasite persisted in the host population. Consistent with epidemiological models, these results indicate that parasite mediated host damages influence the population dynamics of both hosts and parasites.  相似文献

The etiologic agent of Chagas’ disease, Trypanosoma cruzi, is widely distributed in South America, affecting millions of people with thousands of deaths every year. Adherence of the infectious trypomastigote to host cells is mediated by sialic acid. T. cruzi cannot synthesize sialic acids on their own but cleave them from the host cells and link them to glycans on the surface of the parasites using the trans-sialidase, a GPI-anchored enzyme. The infectivity of the protozoan parasites strongly depends on the activity of this enzyme. In this report, we investigated whether the transfer of sialic acids from the host to the parasites can be attenuated using novel sialic acid precursors. The cell line 86-HG-39 was infected with T. cruzi and treated with defined N-acylmannosamine analogues bearing an elongated N-acyl side-chain. By treatment of these cells the number of T.cruzi infected cell was reduced up to 60%. We also showed that the activity of the bacterial sialidase C was reduced with N-glycan substrates with elongated N-acyl side chains of the terminal sialic acids. The affinity of this sialidase decreased with the length of the N-acyl side-chain. The data presented suggest that N-acyl modified sialic acid precursors can change the transfer of sialic acids leading to modification of infection. Since the chemotherapy of this disease is inefficient and afflicted by side effects, the need of effective drugs is lasting. These findings propose a new path to prevent the dissemination of T. cruzi in the human hosts. These compounds or further modified analogues might be a basis for the search of new agents against Chagas’ disease.  相似文献

Parasitic species often have detrimental effects on host growth and survival. The larvae of the genus Margaritifera (Bivalvia), called glochidia, are specialist parasites of salmonid fishes. Previous studies have reported negligible influences of the parasite on their salmonid hosts at natural infection levels. However, those studies focused mainly on their instantaneous effects (i.e., during the parasitic period). Given the time lag between physiological and somatic responses to pathogen infections, the effect of glochidial infection may become clearer during the post-parasitic period. Here, we examined whether the effect of glochidial infections of Margaritifera laevis on its salmonid host Oncorhynchus masou masou would emerge during the post-parasitic period. We performed a controlled aquarium experiment and monitored fish growth at two time intervals (i.e., parasitic and post-parasitic periods) to test this hypothesis. Consistent with previous observations, the effects of glochidial infection were unclear in the middle of the experiment (day 50; parasitic period). However, even with a natural glochidial load (48 glochidia per fish), we found a significant reduction in growth rates of infected fish in the extended period of the experiment (day 70; post-parasitic period). Our results suggest that examining only instantaneous effects may provide misleading conclusions about mussel–host relationships.  相似文献

Ant-gardens represent a special type of association between ants and epiphytes. Frequently, two ant species can share the same nest in a phenomenon known as ‘parabiosis’, but the exact nature (i.e., mutualistic or parasitic) of this interaction is the subject of debate. We thus attempted to clarify the mutual costs and benefits for each partner (ants and plants) in the Crematogaster levior/Camponotus femoratus ant-garden parabiosis. The ants’ response to experimental foliar damage to the epiphytes and to the host tree as well as their behavior and interactions during prey capture were investigated to see if the purported parasitic status of Cr. levior could be demonstrated in either the ant-ant or in the ant-plant interactions. The results show that both species take part in protecting the epiphytes, refuting the role of Cr. levior as a parasite of the ant-garden mutualism. During capture of large prey Ca. femoratus took advantage from the ability of Cr. levior to discover prey; by following Cr. levior trails Ca. femoratus workers discover the prey in turn and usurp them during agonistic interactions. Nevertheless, the trade-off between the costs and benefits of this association seems then to be favorable to both species because it is known that Cr. levior benefits from Ca. femoratus building the common carton nests and furnishing protection from vertebrates. Consequently, parabiosis can then be defined as the only mutualistic association existing between ant species, at least in ant-gardens. Taste preferences of four classic taste substances (NaCl, CaCl2, and sucrose, all—10%; and citric acid—5%), and 21 free amino acids (L-isomers, 0.1–0.001 M) for adult threespine stickebacks Gasterosteus aculeatus is determined in marine and fresh waters. Gustatory responses were compared in the fish caught in marine and placed in marine water or in freshwater and in the fish caught in a stream mouth during spawning migration and in a closed freshwater water body. Taste preferences of threespine sticklebacks depend little on water salinity. Of amino acids, cysteine, glutamic acid, and aspartic acid are attractive, as well as glutamine for the fish living permanently in fresh water. Differences in the reaction of fish to agar-agar pellets with NaCl, CaCl2, and sucrose are considered to be insignificant. Maximum changes occur in the attitude of threespine sticklebacks to citric acid whose taste is palatable to fish in fresh water. It is assumed that the components of marine water render a modifying action on gustatory receptors, the function of receptor cell, and influence susceptibility of fish to the taste of citric acid and, probably, of some other substances. The foraging behavior of fish in fresh water is more active, they consume more pellets, make more numerous repeated grasps, and keep pellets longer in the mouth cavity before swallowing or rejection. It is concluded that, in migratory fish, the abrupt change of external osmotic conditions is not accompanied by noticeable changes on taste preferences and the majority of substances retain their gustatory properties.  相似文献

In this study, a new host record for Dadaytrema oxycephala (Digenea: Cladorchiidae) is described from an important Amazonian ornamental fish. The parasite was identified based in the general morphology and surface ultrastructure of the young and mature trematodes using scanning electron microscopy. The digenetic trematodes were found in the intestine of 15 of 80 specimens (18.7%) of Brochis multiradiatus captured from two floodplain lakes of the Amazonas River, Department of Loreto, Peru and no clinical signs were observed in the parasitized organ. This is the first report of D. oxycephala parasitizing fish of the genus Brochis in the Amazon basin and the first to report this parasite infection in an ornamental fish from Peru. Given that international trade of ornamental fish is a major factor for transboundary spreading of fish parasites and taking account that Peru is the second largest exporter of the Amazonian countries, there is a fundamental need of constant monitoring for diagnosis and timely control of infections by digeneans in order to better prevent introduction in new environments, dissemination and future disease outbreaks.  相似文献

In aquatic ecosystems, fish play a key role in parasite accumulation and transmission to predacious animals. In the present study, realized on seven populations of a small cyprinid fish species, the European bitterling Rhodeus amarus, we investigated (1) the role of the European bitterling as a potential intermediate or paratenic host, (2) the ability of the fish to accumulate parasites with similar final host group, and (3) its significance as a potential source of parasite infection in the ecosystem in respect to habitat characteristics. A total of 36 parasite species were recorded; 31 species (90% of all parasite specimens) were classified as endoparasites. Most of the endoparasites were found in the larval life stage, using bitterling as an intermediate or paratenic host. In particular, parasite community structure showed significantly higher proportions of allogenic parasites in comparison with autogenic. The supposed co-occurrence of parasite species with identical final host groups showed only a weak association. The adjacent reservoir areas were a significant determinant of both the total and infracommunity parasite species richness and for the mean parasite abundance. No relationship between the distance of sampling site from the adjacent reservoir and parasite community characteristics was found. As a small-sized fish with a wide distribution range and high local abundances, the European bitterling can represent a natural prey for a wide range of piscivorous predators. Due to its susceptibility to the number of larval endoparasites, this fish species may therefore fulfill the role as important transmitter of parasites to their final hosts.  相似文献

In the present study, the effect of chemical cues from two fish species (mosquitofish and pumpkinseed), at different concentrations, was tested in life history experiments with Daphnia longispina. The two fish species used represent the most abundant planktivores of many Mediterranean shallow lakes (SW Europe), where the indigenous fish communities have been replaced by such exotic assemblages. Results have shown a similar response of D. longispina to both fish species: kairomones stimulated daphnids to produce more offspring, which resulted in higher fitness (r), relatively to a fishless control. Fish presence also induced an earlier first reproduction, a smaller size at maturity of daphnids, and the production of smaller-sized neonates. Significant correlations with fish concentration (indirect measure of fish kairomone concentration) were found for size at maturity and neonate size, for both fish species. These results are in accordance to the “positive response” observed by other authors, which represents a defence mechanism to face losses caused by fish predators. The chemically mediated size reduction of mature females and neonates is an adaptive response to the size-selective predation exerted by fish. Pumpkinseed introduction is very recent in the lake of origin of the daphnids used in the experiments and its kairomone produced similar effects to mosquitofish in the life history of D. longispina. These results are contrary to the existence of a species-specific kairomone and support the hypothesis of a general fish kairomone. Diel vertical migration (DVM) of large zooplankton is a very common phenomenon in the pelagic zone of lakes and oceans. Although the underlying mechanisms of DVM are well understood, we lack experimental studies on the consequences of this behaviour for the zooplankton’s food resource—the phytoplankton. As large zooplankton species or individuals migrate downwards into lower and darker water strata by day and upwards into surface layers by night, a huge amount of herbivorous biomass moves through the water column twice a day. This migration must have profound consequences for the phytoplankton. It is generally assumed that migration supports an enhanced phytoplankton biomass and a change in the composition of the phytoplankton community towards smaller, edible algae in the epilimnion of a lake. We tested this assumption for the first time in field experiments by comparing phytoplankton biomass and community assemblage in mesocosms with and without artificially migrating natural stocks of Daphnia hyalina. We show that DVM can enhance phytoplankton biomass in the epilimnion and that it has a strong impact on the composition of a phytoplankton community leading to an advantage for small, edible algae. Our results support the idea that DVM of Daphnia can have strong effects on phytoplankton dynamics in a lake.  相似文献

Data on the taxonomic diversity of Baikal whitefish parasites are summarized in the study. Significant correlations of some parasite species’ relative abundance and parasite communities’ (infracommunities and component communities) parameters with host age were found during the study of parasite distribution in the host’s age groups in the Baikal whitefish population from Chivyrkui Bay of Lake Baikal.  相似文献

Parasites with a complex life cycle are supposed to influence the behaviour of their intermediate host in such a way that the transmission to the final host is enhanced, but reduced to non-hosts. Here, we examined whether the trophically transmitted bird parasite Polymorphus minutus increases the antipredator response of its intermediate host, the freshwater amphipod Gammarus pulex to fish cues, i.e. non-host cues (‘increased host abilities hypothesis’). Aggregation behaviour and reduced activity are assumed to decrease the predation risk of gammarids by fishes. Uninfected G. pulex are known to aggregate in the presence of a fish predator. In the present study, gammarids were allowed to choose either to join a group of conspecifics or to stay solitary (experiment 1) or between two groups differing in infection status (experiment 2), both in the presence or absence of fish odour. The perception of the groups was limited to mainly olfactory cues. Contrary to the ‘increased host abilities hypothesis’, in infected gammarids of experiment 1, fish cues induced similar aggregation behaviour as in their uninfected conspecifics. In experiment 2, uninfected as well as infected gammarids did not significantly discriminate between infected and uninfected groups. Although only uninfected gammarids reduced their activity in the presence of predator cues, infected G. pulex were generally less active than uninfected conspecifics. This might suggest that P. minutus manipulates rather the general anti-predator behaviour than the plastic response to predation risk.  相似文献

Background

Co-evolutionary arms races between parasites and hosts are considered to be of immense importance in the evolution of living organisms, potentially leading to highly dynamic life-history changes. The outcome of such arms races is in many cases thought to be determined by frequency dependent selection, which relies on genetic variation in host susceptibility and parasite virulence, and also genotype-specific interactions between host and parasite. Empirical evidence for these two prerequisites is scarce, however, especially for invertebrate hosts. We addressed this topic by analysing the interaction between natural isolates of the soil nematode Caenorhabditis elegans and the pathogenic soil bacterium Serratia marcescens.  相似文献

Following a reduction in fish populations in 2004–2005, a new, single annual pulse of pelagic flatworms was observed in early summer during 2006–2009 in Liuxihe, a freshwater reservoir in South China. As soon as these worms appear, Daphnia galeata retreats into dormancy, one month earlier (July) in the presence of flatworms than previously observed (August) with fish, while the population of the related Ceriodaphnia quadrangula tends to increase. We show, through in situ lake sampling, in large enclosures and by laboratory observations, that Ceriodaphnia, although perhaps competitively inferior in its ability to acquire algal food, has a higher tolerance to flatworm toxins. As a result, Ceriodaphnia manages to coexist with and proliferate in the presence of the flatworm. Observations in the laboratory suggest that flatworm population autoregulates by being sensitive to their own toxins and that Ceriodaphnia, even if prey to the worms, likely incurs more benefit than cost from their presence.  相似文献
