Some tropical African Lobeliaceae. Chromosome numbers, new taxa and comments on taxonomy and nomenclature

Chromosome numbers of 21 taxa in Lobelia L. and Cyphia Berg, are reported, the majority being new records. 2n = 18 in Cyphia is a new generic report. The new species Lobelia paludigena Thulin (Zaire), L. kundelungensis Thulin (Zaire), L. cheranganiensis Thulin (Kenya) and L. corniculata Thulin (Swaziland and Natal) are described. The distributions of these species, as well as of L. thermalis Thunb., are mapped. L. kalobaënsis E. Wimm. ex Thulin is validated. The new combinations L. trullifolia Hemsl. ssp. delicatula (Compton) Thulin and L. flaccida (Presl) A. DC. ssp. gnmvikii (T. C. E. Fries) Thulin are made. Typifications are provided for the following names: L. stuhlmannii Schweinf. ex Stuhlm., L. gregoriana Bak. f., L. fervens Thunb., L. anceps L. f. and L. depressa L. f.     

New and noteworthy species of Indigofera (Leguminosae) from NE Africa

Six new species of Indigofera are described: I. eremophila Thulin from E Ethiopia, I. mooneyi Thulin from the highlands of SW Ethiopia, I. boranica Thulin from SE Ethiopia and NE Kenya, I. gyrata Thulin and I. ammophila Thulin from NE Kenya, and I. cana Thulin from north–central Ethiopia. I. cavallii Chiov., previously known only from the type from S Somalia, is reported also from NE Kenya.     

Calliandra (Leguminosae) in continental Africa

The mainly neotropical genus Calliandra Benth. (Leguminosae–Mimosoideae–Ingeae) is reported for the first time as native in continental Africa. There are two species known, C. gilbertii Thulin & Hunde sp. nov. in E Kenya and Somalia and C. redacta (J. H. Ross) Thulin & Hunde comb. nov. in South Africa near the Namibia border. On pollen morphological grounds they are supposed to be most related to certain neotropical species but the pollen does not agree entirely with any previously known group of the genus. The distribution of C gilbertii and C. redacta stresses the phytogeographical link between the arid zones of northern and southern Africa.     

New varieties of Trifolium semipilosum in Ethiopia

Two new varieties, Trifolium semipilosum Fresen. var. brunellii Thulin and var. intermedium Thulin, are described from the Ethiopian highlands.     

Wajira gen. et sp. nov. (Leguminosae) from Kenya

Wajira albescens Thulin (Leguminosae–Papilionoideae–Phaseoleae–Phaseolinae) is described as a new monotypic genus confined to the arid bushlands of E Kenya.     

Cyclamen (Primulaceae) in tropical Africa

Cyclamen somalense Thulin & Warfa, spec. nova, the first member of the genus known from tropical Africa, is described from the Al Miskat Mts in NE. Somalia. The new species is closely related to the E. MediterraneanC. persicum Mill. The disjunct Mediterranean element in the mountain flora of northern Somalia, to whichC. somalense belongs, is believed to be largely a relict of Tertiary origin.     

<Emphasis Type="Italic">Vernonia bayensis</Emphasis> (Asteraceae/Compositae), a new species from Somalia and a key to the Somali species of <Emphasis Type="Italic">Vernonia</Emphasis>

The new species Vernonia bayensis Thulin & Beentje from southern Somalia is described and illustrated, and a new key to the Somali species of the genus is presented.     

Mollugo viscosa sp. nov. (Molluginaceae), a segregate of M. brasiliensis from Minas Gerais in eastern Brazil

The new species Mollugo viscosa Thulin & Harley is described from Minas Gerais in eastern Brazil. It was previously part of the recently published M. brasiliensis Thulin & Harley, a species that was found to be non‐monophyletic in molecular phylogenetic analyses. Mollugo brasiliensis is here divided into a northern species (M. brasiliensis s.str.) in Bahia and a southern species (M. viscosa sp. nov.) in Minas Gerais. The new species differs from M. brasiliensis in its denser and more viscous indumentum, and in its distinctly smaller seeds with smaller tubercles and a smaller hilar peg, and from its sister species M. ulei by being a perennial herb with bisexual flowers.     

A new species of Campylanthus (Scrophulariaceae) from Yemen

Campylanthus antonii , a new species from the Mahrah Region in Yemen, is described and illustrated.     

Aloe nugalensis sp. nov. (Asphodelaceae), a new gypsum endemic from northeastern Somalia

The new species Aloe nugalensis Thulin, a shrubby plant with long, drooping leaves and a drooping, branched inflorescence with long‐pedicellate orange red flowers, is described from a gypsum hill in the Nugaal valley of northeastern Somalia. The only known material is an individual grown in the Botanical Garden of Uppsala University from seeds collected in Nov 1985 that first flowered in Feb 2011.     

Mollugo brasiliensis sp. nov. (Molluginaceae) from eastern Brazil

The new species Mollugo brasiliensis Thulin & Harley, a perennial viscous herb with 6–8 stamens, few‐seeded capsules and tuberculate seeds, is described from eastern Brazil. It is compared primarily with the two other native members of Molluginaceae previously known from Brazil, M. verticillata L. and Glischrothamnus ulei Pilger.     

Indigofera rubromarginata sp. nov. (Leguminosae) from southern Arabia, with a note on I. eremophila

The new species Indigofera rubromarginata , widespread along the coast of southern Arabia in Yemen and Oman, is described and illustrated. The closely related I. eremophila , previously known only from eastern Ethiopia and Somalia, is reported also from Yemen.     

Notes on Withania (Solanaceae) in Somalia

The identity of Withania reichenbachii is established, the name is neotypified, and the species is described and illustrated. The new combination W. grisea (Hepper & Boulos) Thulin is made. The typification of W. somnifera is discussed, and it is concluded that the present typification can stand. A key to and a synopsis of the four species of Withania now recognised in Somalia are given.     

Cibirhiza spiculata (Apocynaceae), a remarkable new species from eastern Ethiopia

Summary  The new species Cibirhiza spiculata Thulin & Goyder, from Acacia-Commiphora bushland on sand in the Somali National Regional State (Ogaden) of Ethiopia, is described and illustrated. Its conservation status has been assessed. A molecular phylogenetic analysis confirms its placement in the tribe Fockeeae and indicates a position of the new species as sister to C. albersiana. The almost obsolete anther appendages, the outer corona with spreading lobes, as well as the pollinia with apparently single pollen grains, also support its placement in Cibirhiza. However, C. spiculata differs markedly from both previously known species of this genus (C. dhofarensis in Oman and Yemen and C. albersiana in Tanzania and Zambia) by its narrowly linear, subsessile leaves and by the inner corona lobes that are curved inwards over the gynostegium and each ending in a spinulose head.     

Iphigenia socotrana sp. nov. (Colchicaceae), with a note on I. oliveri

The new species Iphigenia socotrana , from limestone rocks along the northern escarpment of Socotra, is described and illustrated. I. somaliensis is lectotypified and reduced to a synonym of I. oliveri .     

A new species of the genus Macrobiotus(Tardigrada:Macrobiotidae) from Southeastern China

A new species Macrobiotus wuyishanensis sp.nov.(Tardigrada:Macrobiotidae) is described from Mt.Wuyi,Southeastern China.It is most similar to Macmbiotus spectabilis Thulin,1928,but differs by lacking fine punctuation on the distal half of the projections on the egg,a ring of polygons that circle the base of each projection,and punctation between the projections on the egg shell.It is also similar to M.grandis Richters,1911,but differs by smaller body size,lacking polygons and punctations between the projections on egg shell.     

New species of <Emphasis Type="Italic">Euphorbia</Emphasis> (Euphorbiaceae) from eastern Ethiopia

The new species Solanum pronum Thulin, from Acacia-Commiphora bushland in eastern Ethiopia and central Somalia, is described and illustrated. It is a member of Solanum sect. Somalanum and is compared with S. benadirense, S. jubae and S. pampaninii.     

Echidnopsis globosa sp. nov. (Asclepiadaceae-Stapelieae) from Yemen

The new species Echidnopsis globosa from rocky hillsides on limestone in the Hadramaut Region in Yemen is described and illustrated. It belongs to a group of species including E. squamulata from Yemen and E. ericiflora from Kenya, but is unique in the genus by its almost perfectly globose flowers.
