Two types of deep-water coral bioherms occur off the coast of southeastern United States: Oculina and Lophelia/Enallopsammia. The deep-water Oculina bioherms form an extensive reef system at depths of 70–100 m along the shelf edge off central eastern Florida. These reefs are comprised of numerous pinnacles and ridges, 3–35 m in height. Each pinnacle is a bank of unconsolidated sediment and coral debris that is capped on the slopes and crest with living and dead colonies of Oculina varicosa, the ivory tree coral. In comparison, deep-water reefs of Lophelia pertusa and Enallopsammia profunda corals occur at depths of 500–850 m (maximum 150-m relief) along the base of the Florida-Hatteras slope in the Straits of Florida. On the western edge of the Blake Plateau off South Carolina and Georgia, 54-m high banks of Enallopsammia and Lophelia occur at depths of 490–550 m, whereas on the eastern edge of the plateau the reefs form structures 146 m in height and at depths of 640–869 m. The geomorphology and functional structure of both the Oculina and Lophelia reefs are similar. North of Little Bahama Bank, at depths of 1000–1300 m, a region of bioherms is dominated by the coral Solenosmilia sp.; Lophelia is reportedly absent. This paper summarizes 25 years of submersible studies on the deep-water Oculina reefs, describes submersible reconnaissance of deep-water Lophelia reefs off the southeastern United States, and contrasts these types of bioherms with the deep-water lithoherms in the Straits of Florida west of the Bahamas. 相似文献

Phosphorus inputs to Lake Naivasha,Kenya, from its catchment and the trophic state of the lake 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The main river supplying Lake Naivasha, Kenya, the Malewa, drains a catchment given over to largely subsistence cultivation and animal husbandry. The lake itself is the focus for an intensive horticultural industry based upon irrigation from the lake. The Malewa, however, is relatively independent of the impact of industry, and so its contribution to eutrophication of the lake was evaluated. Two periods of study, a very wet-dry and a `normal' wet-dry season showed that the river contribution of phosphorus led to a total phosphorus loading of 1.4 g m–2 lake surface ann–1 in the very wet period compared to 0.2 in the `normal'. Chlorophyll `a' in the open water of the lake was significantly related to soluble reactive phosphorus. The lake is now eutrophic by normal limnological criteria. 相似文献

This paper describes the breeding biology of the Louisiana red swamp crayfish (Procambarus clarkii Girard) that has been introduced in a tropical lake, Naivasha. Notable differences in crayfish biology are found between the place of origin in Louisiana and lake Naivasha.In Naivasha sexual maturity in females is reached at a larger size (42 mm carapace length (CL), 76 mm full length (FL)) than in males (40 mm CL, 71 mm FL). The corresponding figures for Chalmette area of Louisiana are 31–32 mm CL for both sexes and at Ben Hur Research Centre, Louisiana, 33 mm CL. The females weigh between 15 and 20 g at the onset of egg deposition. The corresponding Louisiana values are from 5 to 10 g. Crayfish in Naivasha as in Louisiana breed both inside burrows which are 10–70 cm deep, and on the sediment in shallow water at a depth of between 0.5 and 4 m. These observations suggest that reproduction is very much a lake edge activity. The number of breeding individuals in Naivasha varies with the trend of the water surface level. Sexually active females (form I) as judged from secondary sexual characters (appearance of basal hooks at the base of 3rd and 4th walking legs) persist throughout the year at no less than 60% of the adult male population. This is confirmed by the appearance of recently hatched juveniles (3.4 to 6.5 mm CL) in the water throughout the year. Similarly berried females in Naivasha are found throughout the year, though with peaks at irregular intervals. In Louisiana breeding takes place only from August through November with a single peak in October. The fecundity of crayfish in Naivasha is 433 (SE ± 21, N = 133) and there is a positive correlation between body length and egg number. 相似文献

The floating water fern Salvinia molesta has occurred in Lake Naivasha since the early 1960s and during this period has obstructed fishing activities and navigation. In recent years the extent of Salvinia has declined markedly. Since 1988, a second floating weed, Eichhornia crassipes (water hyacinth), has colonised the lake. Salvinia formed large mats around the edges, bays and lagoons and had very few plant or invertebrate species associated with it. Mats of E. crassipes, however, support a greater abundance and variety of animal and plant species, which shows a relationship with mat size. This seems to have facilitated plant succession but without a zonation typical of the classic hydroseral sequence for the lake. 相似文献

I describe a laboratory system for investigating the role of light as a proximate cue for diel changes in locomotor activity and vertical location on the substrate of stream macro-invertebrates. The system consisted of computer-controlled halogen lamps positioned over a laboratory stream in which video-recordings were made of Stenonema modestum mayfly nymphs located on the undersides of unglazed tile substrates. Locomotor activity of study organisms in response to light changes were quantified during computer-programmed and reproducible light/dark (LD) cycles. The system provided the flexibility to simulate a variety of light environments so that the separate influences of light intensity and light change on diel activities of individuals and populations could be examined, which is difficult under natural light conditions. As a group, nymphs responded similarly to simulated twilight (light decrease from 7.9 × 102 to 6.9 × 10–2 W cm–2 at a constant –1.9 × 10–3 s–1 rate of relative light change) and to natural twilight, suggesting that proposed mechanisms of light control of diel activities in nature can be adequately tested in the simulated environment. However, locomotor activity and vertical movements among individual mayflies were highly variable under controlled conditions, suggesting that physiological differences influence their responses to environmental conditions. 相似文献

In recent decades, the cover of fleshy macroalgae has increased and coral cover has decreased on most Caribbean reefs. Coral mortality precipitated this transition, and the accumulation of macroalgal biomass has been enhanced by decreased herbivory and increased nutrient input. Populations of Acropora palmata (elkhorn coral) and A. cervicornis (staghorn coral), two of the most important framework-building species, have died throughout the Caribbean, substantially reducing coral cover and providing substratum for algal growth. Hurricanes have devastated local populations of Acropora spp. over the past 20–25 years, but white-band disease, a putative bacterial syndrome specific to the genus Acropora, has been a more significant source of mortality over large areas of the Caribbean region.Paleontological data suggest that the regional Acropora kill is without precedent in the late Holocene. In Belize, A. cervicornis was the primary ecological and geological constituent of reefs in the central shelf lagoon until the mid-1980s. After constructing reef framework for thousands of years, A. cervicornis was virtually eliminated from the area over a ten-year period. Evidence from other parts of the Caribbean supports the hypothesis of continuous Holocene accumulation and recent mass mortality of Acropora spp. Prospects are poor for the rapid recovery of A. cervicornis, because its reproductive strategy emphasizes asexual fragmentation at the expense of dispersive sexual reproduction. A. palmata also relies on fragmentation, but this species has a higher rate of sexual recruitment than A. cervicornis. If the Acropora spp. do not recover, macroalgae will continue to dominate Caribbean reefs, accompanied by increased abundances of brooding corals, particularly Agaricia spp. and Porites spp. The outbreak of white-band disease has been coincident with increased human activity, and the possibility of a causal connection should be further investigated. 相似文献

Water, sediment, red swamp crayfish (Procambarus clarkii) and black bass (Micropterus salmoides) from Lake Naivasha were analyzed for selected organochlorine and organophosphorus pesticide residues. The mean p,p'-DDT, o,p'-DDT and p,p'-DDE residue levels recorded in black bass (28.3 (± 30.0), 34.2 (±54.0) and 16.1 (±16.1) g kg–1, respectively) and crayfish (4.6 (±5.1), 3.2 (±2.8), and 1.4 (±1.1) g kg–1, respectively), were higher than previously recorded. This indicated recent usage of technical DDT in the lake's catchment. Levels of p,p'-DDT, higher than those of p,p'-DDE further emphasized this. Mean lindane, dieldrin, -endosulfan and aldrin concentrations in black bass were 100.5, 34.6, 21.6 and 16.7 g kg–1, respectively. The same residues were detected at lower concentrations in crayfish at 2.0, 2.0, 2.0 and 1.9 g kg–1, respectively. The higher fat content (3.7 ± 2.7% SD) in black bass (compared to 0.6 ± 0.3% in crayfish) accounted for the significantly higher residue concentrations in black bass. Organophosphate pesticides were the most commonly used pesticides in the lake's catchment, but none was detected in any of the samples. The results indicate that there is need for further work to identify sources and fate of pesticide contaminants, as well as to improve monitoring of pesticide use throughout the catchment. 相似文献

Phytoplankton community structure and succession in the water column of Lake Naivasha,Kenya: a shallow tropical lake 总被引:1,自引:1,他引:1
Lake Naivasha is a shallow freshwater lake in the Rift Valley of Kenya. Since the 1980s, when the lake showed a seasonal shift between diatom and cyanobacterial dominance it has become moderately eutrophic. Its algal assemblage is now dominated by a persistent Aulacoseira italica population both numerically and in terms of contribution to overall primary production. Algal and cyanobacterial counts were used to derive Simpson's diversity, succession rate and total community succession, focusing on the 10 most numerically abundant taxa. 170 species were identified, 43 of which were in common with the 143 found in 1979–80, before the increase in trophic state. Most diatoms are indicators of moderate to high nutrient conditions. There is little horizontal or vertical variation in successional processes throughout the lake and although the absolute abundance of cells varies widely, proportional composition is relatively stable. In Crescent Island lagoon, the only regularly stratified site, hypolimnetic succession rates are lower than those in the epilimnion. Overall, community composition is controlled by mixing (and hence light regime) and nutrient availability. With `endless summer' conditions and full mixing, there is a successional pattern of `muted seasonality' adapted to physical instability and environmental stability. 相似文献

Sustainable development remains a pressing priority for the Lake Naivasha Ramsar site, as a matter both of long-term protection of the lake ecosystem and of the economic and social progress that depends upon it. This must be addressed at catchment-scale to protect the `ecosystem services' that constitute the region's primary resources. Sustainability principles highlight energy, fertilisers, pesticides and other aspects of chemical use, plastics, erosion and sedimentation, wildlife, water and socio-economic issues as central to sustainable development strategy, influenced by both intensive and subsistence farms across the catchment. Market forces and long-term self-interest provide compelling arguments for sustainable development, the delivery of which will depend upon education and the spreading of good practice, perhaps backed up by stewardship schemes. Alternatively, the adverse consequences of continued unsustainable practice are highly significant for the region. 相似文献

The growth of a strain of Moina macrocopa (Straus 1820) isolated from an experimental stabilization pond in Marrakesh, was examined at seven concentrations of algae (6.25–6.25 × 105 cells ml–1 and at 5 different temperatures (15–30 °C)). Feeding conditions influenced the growth rate as well as the maximum size that reached 1.8 mm at 25 °C and at the highest algal concentration (6.25 × 105 cell ml–1). The life span and number of moltings reached a maximum (17.4 days and 13 moltings) at average nutrient concentrations (6.25 × 105 cell ml–1). Juvenile stages varied from 1 to 3 and adult ones from 6 to 8. In the temperature interval tested, growth rate increased with temperature while longevity decreased. Temperature had less effect on maximal size than nutrient availability. Population density (but not crowding) influenced longevity and survival but had no effect on growth. 相似文献

Magnetic susceptibilities of lake sediment and soils on the shoreline of Lake Naivasha,Kenya 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
On steep, unvegetated slopes, sands (particle sizes 0.063 to 2 mm) and gravels (2–64 mm) erode from the shoreline of Lake Naivasha (Kenya) and enter the lake basin. This occurred freely where fringing papyrus (Cyperus papyrus) swamp had been cleared in favour of landing jetties or agriculture. Gravel-sized particles have been recovered up to 60 m offshore and sands to 80 m. In an area where papyrus was undisturbed and the swamp margin was 52 m wide, gravel did not enter the lake and sands penetrated to around 35 m. Large particles are much easier to trace to source and to manage than the finer silts and clays (<0.63 m) that form the bulk of Lake Naivasha's sediment. The pattern of mass specific magnetic susceptibilities for the <63 m fraction of lake sediment around the southern shoreline of the lake suggests that fine particles enter open water directly from the shoreline and are not transported from the lake's only perennial inflow, the River Malewa in the north. Such particles originate from a hinterland that supports high intensity horticulture and are therefore a potential source of contamination. Mean ± SD susceptibility (If) immediately offshore papyrus fringe was 0.49 ± 0.08 × 10-6 m3 kg-1 compared with higher values of 1.33 ± 0.14 × 10-6 m3 kg-1 where there was no papyrus barrier (P<0.0001). The value for five sites in the middle parts of the lake was 0.45 ± 0.02 × 10-6 m3 kg-1 with 1.38 ± 0.10 × 10-6 m3 kg-1 near the mouth of the River Malewa. The results of this study are evidence, therefore, that conservation of a continuous papyrus margin of about 50 m width is a priority for intercepting particulate material. 相似文献

Authigenic carbonate, precipitated in conjunction with biogeochemical activity associated with hydrocarbon and related fluid seepage, provides exposed and buried hard substrate on the crest and flanks of a low-relief mound located on the upper De Soto Slope in the northeastern Gulf of Mexico. Lophelia pertusa has successfully colonized some of this carbonate material. Individual colonies range in size from a few centimeters to over 1.5 m in diameter while aggregations of closely associated colonies with linear orientations were observed to attain 1.5–2 m in height and width and 3–4 m in length. Many of the aggregated colonies appear to be in the first phase of the `thicket' building stage described by Squires (1964). Colonies less than 50–75 cm in diameter were nearly always completely pure white. Larger colonies and the aggregated colonies are often light to dark brown in coloration at their base and center with many having only white terminal branches and some with no white corallum at all. 相似文献

The qualitative fungal composition of Turin 's atmospheric environment was surveyed, carrying out a twelve-month study and collecting with a single stage volumetric sieve sampler on Dermasel agar supplemented with 0.4 g l–1 cycloheximide and 0.05 g l–1 chloramphenicol. We isolated 165 species and 2 varieties of mesophilic fungi from 58 genera and 26 thermotolerant species from 12 genera. Penicillium, Aspergillus, Acremonium, Chrysosporium, Scopulariopsis, Malbranchea, Paecilomyces, Phialophora and Cladosporium were in sequence the genera most rich in mesophilic species; Aspergillus, Penicillium, Chrysosporium and Scopulariopsis the most rich in thermotolerant species. Many of the species isolated are rarely or never recorded in the atmospheric environment. Nitrogenase activity (acetylene reduction activity) was found to occur universally in the Cyperus papyrus swamp in Lake Naivasha. Low rates of acetylene reduction activity (0.9–104.9 nmol C2H4 g d.wt. roots-1 h-1) were associated with excised roots of C. papyrus but higher rates of activity (89.0–280.4 nmol C2H4 g d.wt. roots-1 h-1) were associated with intact root systems of the plant. It was estimated that nitrogen fixation associated with young roots
alone could supply about 26% of the nitrogen requirements of growing papyrus plants. Acetylene reduction activity in the lake
bottom sediments was generally low and associated with adjacent papyrus stands. Plate counts of putative aerobic and facultatively

Lake Bogoria, in the Rift Valley of Kenya is an extreme saline lake (conductivity 40–80 mS cm–1, alkalinity 1500 m equ l–1). It is hydrologically more stable than the other, endorheic lakes in Kenya, because it is deep – maximum depth at present just over 10 m in an area of 3000 ha – and so does not have periods when it is dry. It is ecologically simple, with only one species dominating the phytoplankton – the cyanobacterium `spirulina', Arthrospira fusiformis. Its biomass and productivity were very high – biomass between 38 and 365 g l–1 chlorophyll `a' and 3.4–21 × 103 coils ml–1 and net production between 0.24 and 1 gm C m3 h, the latter in a narrow zone of less than a metre. There were no macro-zooplankton in the plankton and the only grazer of A. fusiformis was the lesser flamingo, Phoeniconaias minor,which occurred irregularly in very high concentrations (in excess of 1 × 106). Detritivory in the benthos was effected by a single chironomid species, Paratendipes sp., at a maximum density of 4 × 104 m–2. The mean daily emergence of adult chironomids was estimated to be 1 × 103 m–2, the maximum 3. There was no littoral plant community within the lake but 44 dicotyledonous and 31 monocotyledonous plant species in the drawn-down zone and adjacent to it. A diverse draw-down terrestrial invertebrate fauna, only superficially described here, processed the flamingo feathers and carcasses, with other detritus such as chironomid pupal exuviae and decaying A. fusiformis scum. About 50 bird species depended upon the chironomids, either as they emerged through the water column as flying adults or later on the shoreline as floating pupal exuvia and dead adults. The lake has high conservation value because of three bird species in particular – lesser flamingo, Cape teal and black-necked grebe. The former provides real economic value in a region otherwise impoverished, because of the spectacle of tens of thousands of flamingos set against the landscape of hot springs and fumaroles at the lake edge, which draws 15000 visitors per annum. P. minor has experienced three periods during the past ten years when major mortalities have occurred, the last of which killed 700 birds day–1. This could have involved as many as 200000 birds (about 1/5th of the maximum population at this lake) if mortality was at a constant rate for the nine months it was observed. Causes of mortality have been suggested as avian tuberculosis, poisoning from cyanobacterial toxins or from heavy metal contamination at Lake Nakuru, but it is still not yet clear what contribution each makes to the problem. 相似文献

The survey and mapping group (SMG) of Statoil is responsible for all seafloor mapping for pipelines and field development in Statoil. During numerous reconnaissance and pipeline route surveys over large portions of our contintental shelf, in the North, Norwegian and Barents Seas, we have only detected deep-water coral reefs in a few specific areas. The first reef we found was in 1982, using a combined side scan sonar and sub-bottom profiler system off Fugløy, northern-Norway. Thereafter, numerous reefs were mapped with similar systems off mid-Norway, during the period 1985–1990 for the reconnaissance and final route mapping of the Haltenpipe project. During 1997, we also mapped some previously known reefs in the Trondheimsfjord area while surveying a route for the Tjeldbergodden - Skogn pipeline project. Between 1997 and 2000, we have mapped more reefs along pipeline routes on the outer mid-Norway continental shelf. These reefs are of a smaller size (less than 5 m high) than those mentioned above (5–31 m high). Although side scan sonar and sub-bottom profilers provide a less ambiguous detection of reefs, we have found that modern multi-beam echosounder data can provide adequate remotely sensed data for deep-water coral reef mapping. The interpretation of the reefs is based on visual documentation by ROV (remotely operated vehicle) or by sampling with gravity corers and grabs (ground-truthing). Based on a limited amount of such ground-truthing, it has been possible to extrapolate and use the specific morphological characteristics of the reefs to map their density and distribution. For the Haltenpipe project, we mapped an offshore route corridor of about 200 km length at a width of 3 km with multi-beam echosounder. On the basis of ground-truthing 14 of the suspected coral reefs, we have found the total number of reefs to be 57 within the 600 km2 mapped area. All these reefs are higher than 5 m (the highest is 31 m) and of diameters at their base of more than 50 m. Although they occur in local clusters with up to 10 reefs per km2, the mean density of reefs along the entire (200 km long) transect is only 0.09 suspected reefs per km2. However, there is a large regional density variation, with the highest regional density being 1.2 reefs per km2 in an area of subcropping Palaeocene sedimentary rocks. A brief discussion of why the corals have constructed their reefs in the deep, cool, and generally `hostile' waters of the Norwegian continental shelf and fjords concludes with them probably subsisting on a reliable and steady nutrient source, independent of season and variations in the Atlantic Drift (`Gulf stream'). This positive environmental component is called `hydraulically active substrata'. It is thus speculated that micro-organisms, bacteria etc., utilizing the hydraulically activated chemical porewater gradients, cause a local enrichment on which the cnidarian organisms ultimately depend. 相似文献

The breeding ecology of eastern olivaceous warblers Hippolais pallida is poorly known. In this study, we provide data on nest site selection and breeding parameters of the species in a population
in northwestern Bulgaria, the only one known to be regularly and heavily parasitized by the common cuckoo Cuculus canorus (hereafter cuckoo). Eastern olivaceous warblers only bred within human settlements of the study area, avoiding seemingly
suitable habitat outside them. Nests were built in a wide range of plant taxa but ailanthuses Ailanthus altissima and mulberries Morus spp. were most frequently used (21%). After taking into account the availability of vegetation, there was an apparent preference
for several plant taxa but not for mulberries. Mean nest height was 1.65 ± 0.98 (0.53–7.60) m, n = 217, and it varied significantly among different types of nesting substrate. Laying date and clutch size of first breeding
attempts averaged 10 June ± 0.98 days, n = 101 and 3.9 ± 0.07 (2–5) eggs, n = 72, respectively. Hatching success, fledging success, and breeding success were 42.5, 86.4, and 36.7%, respectively. The
main sources of nest mortality were predation and cuckoo parasitism, with no significant difference in the proportion of nests

Ascidians are ecologically important components of marine ecosystems yet the ascidian microbiota remains largely unexplored beyond a few model species. We used 16S rRNA gene tag pyrosequencing to provide a comprehensive characterization of microbial symbionts in the tunic of 42 Great Barrier Reef ascidian samples representing 25 species. Results revealed high bacterial biodiversity (3 217 unique operational taxonomic units (OTU0.03) from 19 described and 14 candidate phyla) and the widespread occurrence of ammonia-oxidizing Thaumarchaeota in coral reef ascidians (24 of 25 host species). The ascidian microbiota was clearly differentiated from seawater microbial communities and included symbiont lineages shared with other invertebrate hosts as well as unique, ascidian-specific phylotypes. Several rare seawater microbes were markedly enriched (200–700 fold) in the ascidian tunic, suggesting that the rare biosphere of seawater may act as a conduit for horizontal symbiont transfer. However, most OTUs (71%) were rare and specific to single hosts and a significant correlation between host relatedness and symbiont community similarity was detected, indicating a high degree of host-specificity and potential role of vertical transmission in structuring these communities. We hypothesize that the complex ascidian microbiota revealed herein is maintained by the dynamic microenvironments within the ascidian tunic, offering optimal conditions for different metabolic pathways such as ample chemical substrate (ammonia-rich host waste) and physical habitat (high oxygen, low irradiance) for nitrification. Thus, ascidian hosts provide unique and fertile niches for diverse microorganisms and may represent an important and previously unrecognized habitat for nitrite/nitrate regeneration in coral reef ecosystems. 相似文献
