The single-breath method of Kim et al. (J. Appl. Physiol. 21: 1338-1344, 1966) for the estimation of pulmonary blood flow is based on a single-alveolus lung model for which an analytical relationship has been established between the kinetic behavior of the alveolar O2 and CO2 tensions and the pulmonary blood flow. The analysis is based on the assumption that the dead-space contribution to the expirate is negligible after expiration of a predefined volume. We have examined the influence of this assumption on the estimation of pulmonary blood flow by computer simulation in a lung model that incorporates deadspace contribution to the expirate. Data on the fractional contribution of the dead space to the expired gas were obtained from Tsunoda et al.'s study (J. Appl. Physiol. 32: 644-649, 1972) on the emptying pattern of normal adult lungs. The results show that failure to take account of the dead-space contribution can cause an underestimation in the pulmonary blood flow of greater than 30%. The error can be reduced by ignoring the first part of the expiration but only at the cost of an increase in the sensitivity of the single-breath method to measurement noise. This property of the system is demonstrated experimentally. The error due to dead-space admixture depends on the total volume of dead-space gas, the measurement noise, the pulmonary blood flow, and the emptying characteristics of the dead-space compartment during expiration. Background and Purpose

Studies have suggested that the caudal ventral artery is a potential site for continuous arterial blood pressure monitoring in rats. However, the agreement of mean arterial pressure values between the femoral artery and the caudal ventral artery has not been investigated. This study was performed to identify whether the caudal ventral artery could be safely used for continuous blood pressure monitoring as an alternative site to the femoral artery.

Methods

Rats were randomized into four groups: Sprague Dawley rats under normothermia; Wistar rats under normothermia; Sprague Dawley rats under hypothermia; Wistar rats under hypothermia. Each rat underwent simultaneous monitoring of blood pressure using femoral artery and caudal ventral artery catheterization during a stable hemodynamic state and three periods of acute severe hemodynamic changes. The effects of rat strain, rectal temperature, experimental time course and hemodynamic factors on pressure gradients, the concordance of mean arterial pressure values between the femoral artery and the caudal ventral artery, and the rates of distal ischemia after surgery were determined.

Results

There was a significant difference in the rate of distal ischemia between femoral and caudal ventral arteries after catheterization (25% vs 5%, P<0.05). The overall mean gradient and the mean gradient under a steady hemodynamic state were 4.9±3.7 mm Hg and 5.5±2.5 mm Hg, respectively. The limits of agreement (bias±1.96 SD) were (−2.5 mm Hg, 12.3 mm Hg) and (-0.5 mm Hg, 10.5 mm Hg), respectively. Although the concordance decreased during the first 30 sec of each period of severe hemodynamic changes, the degree of agreement was acceptable regardless of the effects of rat strain and rectal temperature.

Conclusions

Based on the degree of agreement and the safety of catheterization, the caudal ventral artery may be a preferred site for continuous arterial blood pressure monitoring without acute severe hemodynamic changes.  相似文献

The analysis of the gas in a single expirate has long been used to estimate the degree of ventilation-perfusion (Va/Q) inequality in the lung. To further validate this estimate, we examined three measures of Va/Q inhomogeneity calculated from a single full exhalation in nine anesthetized mongrel dogs under control conditions and after exposure to aerosolized methacholine. These measurements were then compared with arterial blood gases and with measurements of Va/Q inhomogeneity obtained using the multiple inert gas elimination technique. The slope of the instantaneous respiratory exchange ratio (R slope) vs. expired volume was poorly correlated with independent measures, probably because of the curvilinear nature of the relationship due to continuing gas exchange. When R was converted to the intrabreath Va/Q (iV/Q), the best index was the slope of iV/Q vs. volume over phase III (iV/Q slope). This was strongly correlated with independent measures, especially those relating to inhomogeneity of perfusion. The correlations for iV/Q slope and R slope considerably improved when only the first half of phase III was considered. We conclude that a useful noninvasive measurement of Va/Q inhomogeneity can be derived from the intrabreath respiratory exchange ratio.  相似文献

Mock cerebrospinal fluid (pH 5.37-8.38) or 2,4-dinitrophenol (DNP) (0.15-1.5 mg) was injected into the subarachnoid space of the ventral brain stem of exteriorized fetal sheep. Changes in pH on the ventral surface of the medulla did not stimulate respiratory efforts or induce significant cardiovascular changes. The respiratory response to DNP injections ranged from no response to prolonged rhythmic ventilation that was independent of the peripheral chemoreceptors or the control arterial pH and blood gas tensions. This inconsistency suggests an effector site somewhat removed from the immediate surface of the medulla. The heart rate and blood pressure were not affected. It is concluded that increased H+ concentration in the extracellular fluid of the fetal ventral medulla does not initiate respiration, and any respiratory response to metabolic inhibitors applied to this area therefore is not attributable to a secondary change in surface pH.  相似文献

The cervical vertebral column is mainly supplied by both vertebral arteries. A regular ladder pattern of arteries is on the dorsal plane as well as on the ventral plane of the cervical vertebral bodies, opposite to the thoracal and the lumbar area of the vertebral column with only a dorsal ladder pattern of arteries. The cervical arterial anastomoses are built by the segmental arteries of the vertebral arteries, in the back of the cervical vertebral bodies by the arteriae canalis vertebralis anteriores and in the front by the rami anteriores (corporum vertebrarum). The thyrocervical and the costocervical trunks are an additional blood supply especially to the ventral anastomoses. A loss of a segmental artery may have no effect because of the good anastomoses. Some decades of aa. nutriciae come in the vertebral body from all sides, but only 2 up to 4 rr. centrales anteriores and 2 rr. centrales posteriores join in the middle of the vertebral body. There are parallels to the arterial blood supply of the thoracal and the lumbar vertebral bodies. The longitudinal ligaments are supplied by both ladder patterns of arteries.  相似文献

Cerebral interstitial fluid (ISF) pH of ventral medulla or thalamus, cisternal cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) pH, and arterial blood pH, PCO2, and [HCO-3] were measured in chloralose-urethan-anesthetized, gallamine-paralyzed New Zealand White rabbits during 30-min episodes of either HCl or NaHCO3 intravenous infusions. ISF pH was measured continuously with glass microelectrodes (1- to 2-microns tip diameter). Cisternal CSF pH was measured continuously with an indwelling pH probe (1-mm tip diameter). Both ventral medullary and thalamic ISF [H+] changed significantly, whereas arterial PCO2 remained constant. CSF [H+] did not change. We conclude from these data that 1) changes in blood acid-base conditions are rapidly reflected in cerebral ISF and 2) transient differences in [H+] and [HCO-3] can exist between cerebral ISF and CSF.  相似文献

A stepwise decrease in the blood pressure by means of sodium nitroprusside infusion led to progressing diminishing of mesatone pressor effects in anaesthetised rats. Cardiac output changes due to mesatone administration did not depend on the initial blood pressure. The latter being lower than physiological limits, a direct linear correlation occurred between pressor responses and shifts of general peripheral resistance, on one hand, and the degree of the blood pressure initial drop, on the other hand. The constrictor responses under study are discussed in respect to their dependence on initial tone of arterial vessels.  相似文献

Summary The angioarchitecture of the superficial vascular hyaloid system (membrana vasculosa retinae) of the frog eye was studied by means of scanning electron microscopy of vascular corrosion casts. The terminal vessels form a single-layered sheath intimately adjacent to the vitreal side of the avascular retina. The hyaloid system is subdivided by the ventral venous trunk into three central areas: the dorsal, the temporo-ventral, and the naso-ventral area. Toward the ora serrata, the hyaloid system is bordered by an arterial ring, and by nasal and temporal venous branches forming more or less complete hemicircles. A vascular zone composed of several tongue-like sectors establishes an inter-connection between the peripheral vascular rings and the central areas of the fundus. The arterial blood is supplied from the arterial ring. The drainage of the hyaloid system is provided via two routes: (1) the Y-shaped ventral trunk collects blood from the central areas, (2) the two peripheral venous branches drain the tongue-like sectors. The vessels within the dorsal area follow preferentially a dorso-ventral meridional direction. This densely capillarized territory corresponds in localization to the area centralis retinae. The ultrastructure of microvessels of the hyaloid system is characterized by features typical for capillaries of the central nervous system.  相似文献

The effects of acute hypoxia on regional pulmonary perfusion have been studied previously in anesthetized, artificially ventilated sheep (J. Appl. Physiol. 56: 338-342, 1984). That study indicated that a rise in pulmonary arterial pressure was associated with a shift of pulmonary blood flow toward dorsal (nondependent) areas of the lung. This study examined the relationship between the pulmonary arterial pressor response and regional pulmonary blood flow in five conscious, standing ewes during 96 h of normobaric hypoxia. The sheep were made hypoxic by N2 dilution in an environmental chamber [arterial O2 tension (PaO2) = 37-42 Torr, arterial CO2 tension (PaCO2) = 25-30 Torr]. Regional pulmonary blood flow was calculated by injecting 15-micron radiolabeled microspheres into the superior vena cava during normoxia and at 24-h intervals of hypoxia. Pulmonary arterial pressure increased from 12 Torr during normoxia to 19-22 Torr throughout hypoxia (alpha less than 0.049). Pulmonary blood flow, expressed as %QCO or ml X min-1 X g-1, did not shift among dorsal and ventral regions during hypoxia (alpha greater than 0.25); nor were there interlobar shifts of blood flow (alpha greater than 0.10). These data suggest that conscious, standing sheep do not demonstrate a shift in pulmonary blood flow during 96 h of normobaric hypoxia even though pulmonary arterial pressure rises 7-10 Torr. We question whether global hypoxic pulmonary vasoconstriction is, by itself, beneficial to the sheep.  相似文献

The unique anatomy of the double ventral aorta outflow system in the air breathing teleost Channa argus (Ophiocephalus) showing an anterior and posterior ventral aorta is described. The marked trabeculation of the ventricle and bulbus arteriosus and the arrangement of central veins are used as a basis for the hypothesis that Channa may selectively channel the well oxygenated blood draining the air breathing organs via the anterior cardinal vein to the posterior ventral aorta, which forms the systemic arterial circulation. An angiocardiographic technique was used to test this hypothesis, as well as to delineate the functional role of the heart chambers in the cardiac cycle. No reflux of contrast to the sinus venosus during atrial filling and no ventricular filling before atrial contraction were apparent, which makes the atrium the main determinant of the ventricular end-diastolic volume. Ventricular contraction left a small or no residual volume. The ventricular ejectate was initially nearly completely absorbed by the very elastic bulbus arteriosus, acting as a pressure chamber (Windkessel) stabilizing and prolonging ventral aortic blood flow. Contrast medium was not selectively passed from the anterior cardinal vein to the posterior ventral aorta. However, the diameter of this vessel and its density of contrast were greater than in the anterior aorta, suggesting a preference for a greater blood flow from the air breathing organ through the heart to the posterior aorta.  相似文献

The morphological transformation of hermit crabs into crab‐like king crabs in the evolution of decapod crustaceans represents a remarkable case of carcinization or evolutionary shaping into a crab‐like form. In this study, we focus on internal organs such as the hemolymph vascular system and adjacent anatomical structures of several Recent hermit crab (Paguridae) and king crab (Lithodidae) species. There are various correspondences in the morphology of the arterial systems in the dorsal cephalothorax of the two taxa, especially with regard to the anterior aorta, anterior lateral arteries, and hepatic arteries. In the pleon, the posterior aorta in both taxa displays a proximal bifurcation and follows an asymmetrical course. The ventral vessel system, on the other hand, which mainly supplies the limbs, differs significantly between the taxa, with pagurids displaying the plesiomorphic condition. The pattern of the ventral vessel system in Lithodidae is influenced by morphological transformations of integumental structures during carcinization. One of these transformations was the broadening of the sternites, which resulted in a widening of the space between the endosternites. In addition, changes in the morphology of the endophragmal skeleton in Lithodidae led to an increase in the potential for intraspecific variability and interspecific variation in the arterial branching pattern. 用血管铸型法和大体解剖学方法对环颈雉胃动脉的起源、分布及胃静脉的回流情况进行了解剖学研究。结果表明,环颈雉的胃动脉均由腹腔动脉分出;腺胃由腺胃背侧动脉和腺胃腹侧动脉营养,腺胃背侧动脉直接起自腹腔动态的左侧,腺胃腹侧动脉起自腹腔动脉左支。腺胃血液的静脉有腺胃前静脉和腺胃后静脉,分别汇入后腔静脉和左肝门静脉。肌胃由肌胃左动脉、肌胃右动脉和肌胃背侧动脉营养,肌胃左动脉起自腹腔动脉的左支;肌胃右动脉起自腹腔动脉的右支;肌胃背侧动脉从腺胃背动脉分支而来。回流肌胃血液的静脉有胃右静脉、胃左静脉和胃腹侧静脉;胃右静脉汇入右肝门静脉,胃左静脉和胃腹侧静脉汇入左肝门静脉。另外腺胃和肌胃的表面缺乏主干动脉间的吻合。  相似文献

为了研究鹧鸪腺胃和肌胃的动脉分布状况,本实验用血管铸型法对10只鹧鸪胃的动脉分支和分布情况进行了详细的解剖观察。结果表明,鹧鸪的腺胃由腺胃背侧动脉和腺胃腹侧动脉供应营养,肌胃由胃左动脉和胃右动脉供应,肌胃背侧动脉是胃右动脉的一末端分支,肌胃腹侧动脉由胃左动脉分出。  相似文献

The effect of experimentally induced blood pressure changes on the in vivo release of neuronal corticosterone in limbic and hypothalamic areas was studied in anaesthetized rats. A fall of the arterial blood pressure (ABP) elicited by the intravenous (i.v.) injection of the vasodilatator nitroprusside or the ganglionic blocking agent chlorisondamine decreased the release of corticosterone in the central amygdala (AC) and the ventral hippocampus (VH) whereas an experimentally induced hypertension after i.v. administration of the alpha adrenoreceptoragonist tramazoline led to an enhanced release of the glucocorticoid in the limbic areas mentioned above. Alterations in ABP did not affect the rates of corticosterone release in the medial hypothalamus (MH). The results may indicate a functional role for neuronal limbic corticosterone in central blood pressure regulation.  相似文献

The requirement for using an arterial occlusion cuff at the wrist when measuring forearm blood flows by plethysmography was tested on a total of 8 subjects at rest and during and after sustained and intermittent isometric exercise. The contribution of the venous effluent from the hand to the forearm flow during exercise was challenged by immersing the arm in water at 20, 34, and 40 degrees C. Occlusion of the circulation to the hand reduced the blood flow through the resting forearm at all water temperatures. There was an inverse relationship between the temperature of the water and the proportion in the reduction of forearm blood flow upon inflation of the wrist-cuff, ranging from 45 to 19% at 20 degrees to 40 degrees C, respectively. However, during sustained isometric exercise at 10% of the subjects maximum voluntary contraction (MVC) there was no reduction in the measured forearm flow when an arterial occlusion cuff was inflated aroung the wrist. Similarly, there was no alteration in the blood flow measured 2 s after each of a series of intermittent isometric contractions exerted at 20% or 60% MVC for 2 s whether or not circulation to the hand was occluded nor of the post-exercise hyperemia following 1 min of sustained contraction at 40% MVC. These results indicate that a wrist-cuff is not required for accurate measurement of forearm blood flows during or after isometric exercise.  相似文献

The pattern of regional brain activation in humans during thirst associated with dehydration, increased blood osmolality, and decreased blood volume is not known. Furthermore, there is little information available about associations between activation in osmoreceptive brain regions such as the organum vasculosum of the lamina terminalis and the brain regions implicated in thirst and its satiation in humans. With the objective of investigating the neuroanatomical correlates of dehydration and activation in the ventral lamina terminalis, this study involved exercise-induced sweating in 15 people and measures of regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) using a functional magnetic resonance imaging technique called pulsed arterial spin labeling. Regional brain activations during dehydration, thirst, and postdrinking were consistent with the network previously identified during systemic hypertonic infusions, thus providing further evidence that the network is involved in monitoring body fluid and the experience of thirst. rCBF measurements in the ventral lamina terminalis were correlated with whole brain rCBF measures to identify regions that correlated with the osmoreceptive region. Regions implicated in the experience of thirst were identified including cingulate cortex, prefrontal cortex, striatum, parahippocampus, and cerebellum. Furthermore, the correlation of rCBF between the ventral lamina terminalis and the cingulate cortex and insula was different for the states of thirst and recent drinking, suggesting that functional connectivity of the ventral lamina terminalis is a dynamic process influenced by hydration status and ingestive behavior.  相似文献

According to the three-signal model of mesoderm patterning in Xenopus, all mesoderm, with the exception of the Spemann organizer, is originally specified as ventral type, such as lateral plate and primary blood islands. It is proposed that the blood islands become restricted to the ventralmost mesoderm because they are not exposed to the BMP-inhibiting activity of the Spemann organizer. We present evidence here that, contrary to predictions of this model, the blood islands remain ventrally restricted even in the absence of Spemann organizer signaling. We further observed that inhibition of FGF signaling with a dominant negative receptor resulted in the expansion of the blood island-forming territory with a concomitant loss of somite. The requirement for FGF signaling in specifying somite versus blood island territories was observed as early as midgastrulation. The nonoverlapping expression domains of Xnr-2 and Xbra in the gastrula marginal zone appear to mark presumptive blood island and somite, respectively. Inhibition of FGF signaling with dominant negative receptor leads to an expansion of Xnr-2 expression and to a corresponding reduction in Xbra expression. On the other hand, we found no evidence that manipulation of BMP signaling, either positively or negatively, altered the expression domains of Xnr-2 and Xbra. These results suggest that FGF signaling, rather than BMP-inhibiting activity, is essential for restriction of the ventral blood islands to ventral mesoderm.  相似文献

We have reported that the animal pole cells stimulate the ventral mesoderm of early gastrula Xenopus embryo (stage 10) to differentiate into erythrocytes. To determine the molecular mechanism(s) involved in the stimulatory effect of the animal pole, ventral mesoderm explants were cultured in the presence of various defined cellular factors. In this study, we report that murine stem cell factor (SCF) stimulates globin expression at the optimum dose of 10 ng/ml. Globin expression was observed from the ventral mesoderm explants treated with SCF, but not from the dorsal mesoderm and the animal pole explants. Morphological studies of the ventral mesoderm treated with SCF showed that only a certain population of the ventral mesoderm differentiates into erythrocytes. On the other hand, coculture of ventral mesoderm and animal pole revealed the differentiation of the entire structures into mesenchyme, blood cells, and the overlying epidermis. These data suggest that SCF may play a role in the stimulation of erythrocytic differentiation, but the effect of the animal pole cells cannot be replaced with that of SCF.  相似文献
