An outbreak of canine distemper in a kennel of German shepherds in the province of Bari is reported. Six 42-day-old pups developed typical signs of canine distemper (fever, conjunctivitis, respiratory distress and enteritis) and died within 7-10 days. Neurological symptoms were observed only in one pup. Four additional pups, which had shown no sign of illness, were separated and vaccinated, but two of these developed a severe, fatal nervous form 15 days later. Post-mortem examination, carried out on two pups which died without neurological signs, showed pneumonia and enteritis, more severe in one of the two examined pups. Smears from the brain and the conjunctiva of both dogs tested positive for canine distemper virus (CDV) by an immunofluorescent assay, confirmed by the identification of viral RNA using RT-PCR. Bordetella bronchiseptica and a canine adenovirus strain, characterized as canine adenovirus type 2 by a differential PCR assay, were isolated from the lungs of the pup showing the most pronounced lesions. Furthermore, canine coronavirus was detected by PCR in the intestinal content of this pup, suggesting a multifactorial aetiology of the outbreak.  相似文献

The interaction between maternally-derived antibodies (MDA) and canine parvovirus (CPV) infection was evaluated in five groups of pups with a wide range of haemagglutination inhibiting (HI) titres of MDA (from < 10 to 320). The pups were inoculated with a field CPV strain and monitored daily to evaluate their clinical condition and viral shedding in the faeces. Serum samples were collected weekly to evaluate antibody response. Clinical signs were observed in dogs with HI titres up to 80. Active CPV replication was demonstrated in dogs with HI titres up to 160, although slightly delayed, at lower titres and for a shorter period compared to seronegative dogs. The successful infection of dogs with HI titres of 80 and 160 was also confirmed by seroconversion, evaluated at day 14 postinfection. These findings are in contrast with the MDA titre (HI > or = 80) usually considered fully protective for CPV infection, and suggest the need for revision of current vaccination programmes for pups.  相似文献

Large breeding populations of California sea lions (Zalophus californianus) are located on San Miguel and San Nicolas Islands in the Southern California Bight. In 2001, there was a substantial increase in pup mortality in late summer and fall. From June 2002 to January 2003, 208 freshly dead pups were examined on San Miguel Island, the most western of the Channel Islands off the coast of southern California. Tissues from 186 of these pups were examined histologically. The primary lesions in 133 (72%) of the pups were an enteritis associated with hookworms and infections in major organs. Emaciation/starvation in 43 pups (26%) was the second most important cause of death.  相似文献

The metabolic clearance rate (MCR) for ACTH in adult dogs was previously shown not to vary significantly with varying plasma ACTH concentrations or among dogs. This is confirmed here for pups aged 1-7 days. Hence, ACTH secretion rates can be continuously calculated from a continuous function of plasma ACTH vs. time. Each of seven adult dogs under Nembutal anesthesia received two or three intravenous (i.v.) injections of histamine with increasing doses. The first injections in each dog ranged from 7 to 50 mug/kg, while the last dose was 62-108 mug/kg. A total of 16 injections were given. Twelve pups (two litters of six) aged 1-7 days each received one injection of histamine of 76-116 mug/kg (i.v.). ACTH concentrations in plasma were determined by an adrenal cell suspension bioassay before, and 6 times after each injection. Nine pups also underwent determinations of their MCR for ACTH, with plateau concentrations determined at three times during an ACTH infusion. Continuous curves of ACTH secretion rates were calculated for all 28 histamine injections, showing that all except the 1-day-old pups secrete considerable ACTH when stressed. Compared to adult dogs, the pups show lower secretion rate peaks and shorter periods of rapid secretion. Changes in plasma glucocorticoids also suggest that the adrenal cortex of newborn dogs can respond to ACTH by increased glucocorticoid secretion.  相似文献

Breeding studies in a strain of miniature schnauzer dogs with Persistent Müllerian Duct Syndrome (PMDS) indicate this syndrome is inherited as an autosomal recessive trait, as it is in man. Testes of neonatal dogs affected with PMDS and normal male littermates were examined for Müllerian Inhibiting Substance (MIS) production by immunohistochemistry and bioassay. MIS immunoactivity was detected in Sertoli cells of normal and affected pups using an avidin-biotin complex-enhanced method. Rat embryonic Müllerian ducts regressed when cocultured with testis fragments of both normal and affected pups in a graded organ culture bioassay, demonstrating that the MIS produced was bioactive. These findings indicate that Müllerian duct persistence in affected dogs is not due to a mutation in the structural gene for MIS, but rather, by inference, to a failure of response to MIS at the receptor level.  相似文献

Despite a marked increase in the focus toward biodiversity conservation in fragmented landscapes, studies that confirm species breeding success are scarce and limited. In this paper, we asked whether local (area of forest patches) and landscape (amount of suitable habitat surrounding of focal patches) factors affect the breeding success of raccoon dogs (Nyctereutes procyonoides) in Tokyo, Central Japan. The breeding success of raccoon dogs is easy to judge as adults travel with pups during the breeding season. We selected 21 forest patches (3.3–797.8 ha) as study sites. In each forest patch, we used infra-red-triggered cameras for a total of 60 camera days per site. We inspected each photo to determine whether it was of an adult or a pup. Although we found adult raccoon dogs in all 21 forest patches, pups were found only in 13 patches. To estimate probability of occurrence and detection for raccoon in 21 forest fragments, we used single season site occupancy models in PRESENCE program. Model selection based on AIC and model averaging showed that the occupancy probability of pups was positively affected by patch area. This result suggests that large forests improve breeding success of raccoon dogs. A major reason for the low habitat value of small, isolated patches may be the low availability of food sources and the high risk of being killed on the roads in such areas. Understanding the effects of local and landscape parameters on species breeding success may help us to devise and implement effective long-term conservation and management plans.  相似文献

We compared spatial and temporal patterns of resource use by feral and abandoned domestic dogs (Canis familiaris) on the Navajo reservation in Arizona and New Mexico. Community dumps provide locally abundant food resources utilized both by feral dogs and dogs abandoned at the dump site. Although population parameters were much the same for feral and abandoned dogs, the use of space varied distinctly and reflected behavioral differences in the way each population responded to the absence of human control, the need to acquire food, and the developmental state of pups. Temporal use of resources by feral dogs varied seasonally with the age of pups in one pack, but not in a second pack. Priority of access to local resources may be influenced by aggressive interactions among dogs at a dump. Barking may serve to warn dogs already present at a dump that competitors have arrived.  相似文献

It has been suggested that African wild dogs Lycaon pictus need exceptionally large home ranges (and hence occur at such low densities) because they are limited by competition with larger sympatric carnivores, namely lions Panthera leo and spotted hyenas Crocuta crocuta. To investigate this relationship at a proximate level and explore which factors mediate it, we conducted audio playback experiments examining how wild dogs responded to the simulated proximity of either lions or hyenas. The principle finding was that wild dogs consistently moved directly away from lion roars, but when played hyena whoops either stood their ground or, later, moved off in a random direction. These results suggest that lions represent an immediate high‐level threat to wild dogs that is invariably best avoided, whilst the threat from hyenas may not be so great or perhaps is simply unavoidable. Wild dogs appeared to make some assessment of ambush risk during interactions with lions, illustrated by the varying latency to their retreat in habitats of differing vegetation density (and hence ambush potential). Additionally, packs with younger pups were more likely to alarm call and exhibited a slower rate of retreat in the hour following exposure to lion roars. Other variables investigated (competitor group size, lion sex, presence of pups) failed to explain variation in wild dogs’ responses.  相似文献

The effect of MHC polymorphism on individual fitness variation in the wild remains equivocal; however, much evidence suggests that heterozygote advantage is a major determinant. To understand the contribution of MHC polymorphism to individual disease resistance or susceptibility in natural populations, we investigated two MHC class II B loci, DQB and DRB, in the New Zealand sea lion (NZSL, Phocarctos hookeri). The NZSL is a threatened species which is unusually susceptible to death by bacterial infection at an early age; it has suffered three bacterial induced epizootics resulting in high mortality levels of young pups since 1997. The MHC DQB and DRB haplotypes of dead NZSL pups with known cause of death (bacteria, enteritis or trauma) were sequenced and reconstructed, compared to pups that survived beyond 2 months of age, and distinct MHC DRB allele frequency and genotype differences were identified. Two findings were striking: (i) one DRB allele was present only in dead pups, and (ii) one heterozygous DRB genotype, common in live pups, was absent from dead pups. These results are consistent with some functional relationship with these variants and suggest heterozygote advantage is operating at DRB. We found no association between heterozygosity and fitness at 17 microsatellite loci, indicating that general heterozygosity is not responsible for the effect on fitness detected here. This result may be a consequence of recurrent selection by multiple pathogen assault over recent years and highlights the importance of heterozygote advantage at MHC as a potential mechanism for fitness differences in wild populations.  相似文献

A survey of gastrointestinal helminth parasites of stray dogs (Canis familiaris) was conducted at Obollo-Afor and Ekwulobia markets, in Enugu and Anambra States, south-eastern Nigeria, respectively, to determine the patterns of infection among dogs in different parts of south-eastern Nigeria. Faecal samples collected, using long forceps, from every dog encountered in the markets between June 2007 and December 2008 were analysed by the Kato-Katz technique. Out of 413 dogs examined in both markets, 217 (52.6%) were infected with at least one of five parasites (Toxocara spp., Dipylidium caninum, Ancylostoma caninum, Taenia spp. and Trichuris vulpis). Overall faecal egg intensity of infection was 49.9?±?58.7 eggs/g (epg). Further studies on the immunization of dogs against E. granulosus indicated that certain dogs have a natural resistance, which is not mediated by specific antibodies or sensitized lymphocytes to tapeworm secretory antigens. In a pilot experiment with two pups, E. granulosus recovered from an immunized pup were arrested in their development and exhibited 100% inhibition of egg production compared to 100% egg production in mature worms recovered from a control pup. When the experiment was repeated with 10 pups, three of five control pups given Freud's adjuvant and Bordetella pertussis carried E. granulosus which were arrested in their development and showed 100% inhibition of egg production. Two of five immunized pups also exhibited signs of resistance. Arrested worms recovered 40 days after infection appeared to be at a stage equivalent to about 18 days of optimal development. Although immunized pups exhibiting resistance showed strong positive in vitro and in vivo immune responses, all control pups gave negative reactions to tapeworm secretory antigens.  相似文献

Beagles, 2 months old and helminth naive, were infected with chilled arrest-prone larvae of Ancylostoma caninum. Eighteen days after infection, the pups were treated with an adulticidal anthelmintic (disophenol or dichlorvos) to remove adult worms while allowing dormant larvae to survive. Examinations of treated pups at necropsy demonstrated that the remaining hypobiotic larvae could develop and mature in the same dogs within which their development was arrested. Removal of adult worms was not a stimulus for resumption of larval development. Indeed, larvae resumed development in untreated control dogs harboring substantial populations of adult worms. Prednisolone treatment of dogs, although apparently producing some degree of immunodepression as judged by lymphocyte transformation assays, did not release larvae from dormancy. In fact, the dogs treated with the corticosteroid harbored significantly greater populations of hypobiotic larvae at 100 days after infection than did their untreated controls. Some hypobiotic larvae appeared to resume development spontaneously and idiosyncratically during the 2 to 3 month duration of these experiments. Whether a synchronous resumption of development would occur given other stimuli or spontaneously after a longer period of dormancy remains to be determined.  相似文献

Parvovirus infections in Finnish fur animals, i.e. ferrets, raccoon dogs, blue foxes and mink, were studied. The ferret was found to be the only insusceptible animal. Parvo enteritis of raccoon dogs, reported since 1980, has spread from East Finland to other parts of the country. A new candidate for the Parvovirus family was found to infect blue foxes. According to serologic investigations, the virus resembled feline panleukopenia virus more than canine parvovirus. Clinical signs during the infection have been mild. Annual vaccination has not eradicated mink enteritis virus on farms, but the disease has taken a subclinical form.  相似文献

The skin and lymphoid organs of Mexican hairless dogs and their hairless offspring were examined histologically. The hairless dogs lacked most hairs except for sparse hairs on the head, tail and feet. The skin of newborn pups consisted of a thick epidermis with epidermal ingrowths forming the rudiments of hair follicles. In older dogs more than 2 months of age, however, the epidermis was thin and the ingrowths were few. Neither hair follicles nor skin glands were present. The hairy skin of the head and tail had hair follicles with sebaceous glands. Regarding the lymphoid organs, the newborn pups possessed a thymus like haired pups. But in the older dogs more than 2 months of age, the thymus was atrophied and the lymphocyte population was too sparse to demarcate the cortex and the medulla. Lymphocyte accumulation in older dogs was also poor in the spleen and mesenteric lymph nodes. The present findings indicate that the hairlessness of the Mexican hairless dogs and their descendants is accompanied by early atrophy of the thymus after birth, and is followed by poor accumulation of lymphocytes in the thymus-dependent area of the spleen and the mesenteric lymph nodes. The defect of the thymus in the hairless dog seems to be different from that in athymic nude mice and rats. Further studies are needed to elucidate the immunological response and function in hairless dogs.  相似文献

As part of population dynamics studies of the South American fur seal (Arctophoca australis gracilis) rookery at Punta Weather in Guafo Island (43°36'S, 74°43’W), the causes and extent of pup mortality were monitored. During four breeding seasons, daily counts of live and dead pups were carried out to determine pup production and pup mortality. Dead pups were retrieved from the rookery to perform necropsies. The mean pup production was 1,735.5 ± 336 pups and the mean pup mortality up to 12 wk old was 6.0%± 2.6%. The major causes of death were enteritis with microscopic lesions of bacteremia (28.4%), starvation (23.5%), drowning (21%), trauma (19.8%), and stillbirths (2.5%). Enteritis with microscopic lesions of bacteremia, and starvation had higher incidence during January (beginning and middle of the breeding season) while most trauma and drowning occurred during February (end of the breeding season). In the 2006–2007 breeding season there was an increase in mortality due to starvation and trauma. Most pup deaths at Guafo Island are generated by extrinsic factors; therefore, additional studies that assess the impact of environmental changes and fishing activities, are needed in order to determine the exact causes of the decline of this species along Chilean coasts.  相似文献

The efficacy of an inactivated CCoV vaccine (Duramune PC) was evaluated in four pups. Two dogs were maintained non-vaccinated. Ten days after the booster shot all the pups were challenged with a field CCoV strain administered by oro-nasal route. The vaccinated pups did not display clinical signs and shed the challenge-virus for 11.25 days, evaluated by virus isolation, and 13.5 days, evaluated by PCR assay. The two non vaccinated pups displayed mild diarrhoea at day post-challenge 4 and shed the challenge-virus for 14 and 15 days respectively, by virus isolation, and for 22 and 24 days respectively, by PCR assay.  相似文献

The objective of the present study was to investigate whether nuclear transfer of postmortem wolf somatic cells into enucleated dog oocytes, is a feasible method to produce a cloned wolf. In vivo-matured oocytes (from domestic dogs) were enucleated and fused with somatic cells derived from culture of tissue obtained from a male gray wolf 6h after death. The reconstructed embryos were activated and transferred into the oviducts of naturally synchronous domestic bitches. Overall, 372 reconstructed embryos were transferred to 17 recipient dogs; four recipients (23.5%) were confirmed pregnant (ultrasonographically) 23-25 d after embryo transfer. One recipient spontaneously delivered two dead pups and three recipients delivered, by cesarean section, four cloned wolf pups, weighing 450, 190, 300, and 490g, respectively. The pup that weighed 190g died within 12h after birth. The six cloned wolf pups were genetically identical to the donor wolf, and their mitochondrial DNA originated from the oocyte donors. The three live wolf pups had a normal wolf karyotype (78, XY), and the amount of telomeric DNA, assessed by quantitative fluorescence in situ hybridization, was similar to, or lower than, that of the nuclear donor. In conclusion, the present study demonstrated the successful cloning of an endangered male gray wolf via interspecies transfer of somatic cells, isolated postmortem from a wolf, and transferred into enucleated dog oocytes. Therefore, somatic cell nuclear transfer has potential for preservation of canine species in extreme situations, including sudden death.  相似文献

The domestic dog (Canis lupus familiaris) is characterized by greatly reduced parenting investment compared with the wild type wolf (C. l. lupus) from which it is descended. Unlike wolf pups, which are reared by both parents into their second year of life, dog pups are abandoned by their mother at weaning around eight weeks of age. This relatively small parental involvement may contribute to the high pup mortality observed in dogs not living as pets. We hypothesized that people would find dog pups most attractive around weaning age when conspecific parental care is significantly reduced and pup mortality rate is high. Younger and older pups would benefit less from human intervention because in the former case the mother is providing care, and in the latter their survival is already compromised. To test this hypothesis, 51 participants rated the attractiveness of 39 black and white headshot photographs presented on a computer screen of dog pups from three breeds (Jack Russell Terrier, Cane Corso, and White Shepherd), from birth to 7 months old. In line with our hypothesis, attractiveness of Cane Corsos peaked at 6.3 weeks of age; Jack Russell Terriers’ attractiveness peaked at 7.7 weeks; and White Shepherds were most attractive at 8.3 weeks. There were also differences in attractiveness between the breeds, with Cane Corsos rated less attractive than the other two breeds. If this attractiveness motivates humans to care for the dog pups and thereby improves pup survival, this could confer significant advantages to dogs, and may contribute to our understanding of the process of domestication.  相似文献

While oxytocin is widely used in the treatment of dystocia in dogs, there is little information about its secretion before and during normal unassisted whelping. We therefore measured plasma oxytocin concentrations during late pregnancy and the expulsive stage of parturition. Blood samples were collected from eight dogs at 3-min intervals during a 42-min period between the 2nd and 14th day before whelping and during parturition after the birth of 1-3 pups. The litters consisted of 5-15 pups and the progression of the expulsive stage was linear and nearly parallel in the eight bitches. The overall mean (+/-S.D.) plasma oxytocin concentration during late pregnancy was 3.6+/-2.1pg/ml. Mean values in individual dogs ranged from 1.2 to 7.4 pg/ml, but the intra-animal variation was rather small. During the expulsive stage the overall mean (+/-S.D.) plasma oxytocin concentration was 12.9+/-13.9 pg/ml, with mean values in individual dogs ranging from 3.5 to 46 pg/ml. The mean area under the oxytocin curve for parturient dogs was significantly higher (P<0.05) than for pregnant dogs. During the expulsive stage, the peak plasma oxytocin level in individual dogs ranged between 10 and 117 pg/ml. In six of the eight dogs a pup was born during blood collection and in five of these animals the plasma oxytocin concentration increased temporarily during periods of abdominal straining and expulsion. However, straining efforts and expulsion were not consistently associated with a rise in the circulating oxytocin level. It is concluded that in the dog plasma oxytocin levels are higher and more variable during the expulsive stage of parturition than during late pregnancy. Interrelationships between the secretion pattern of oxytocin, the level of uterine contractility, and the progress of fetal expulsion in dogs need further exploration.  相似文献

The ontogeny of time allocation was studied in a field population of black-tailed prairie dogs, Cynomys ludovicianus. Pups first emerged from their natal burrows in late May. All individuals in the population, including all pups, were observed for 12 weeks following this emergence. Both cross-sectional and longitudinal analyses of ontogeny revealed considerable age differences. Upon first emergence, pups were extremely wary and spent most of their time vigilant and little time feeding. As pups aged, they increased time spent feeding and decreased time spent vigilant. Male and female pups behaved similarly. Pups differed from adults in their time allocation patterns and these differences changed as pups aged. Pups were initially more vigilant and fed less than adults, but became less vigilant than adults as the summer progressed. Yearlings behaved similarly to adults. Possible intrinsic (e.g., pup age and weight) and extrinsic (e.g., weather conditions, microhabitat location and coterie composition) influences on time allocation by pups were also examined. In general, extrinsic influences appeared to have more impact on pup behavior than intrinsic ones, suggesting that time allocation by pups may be largely context-dependent. Overall, the considerable number of age differences argues for more consideration of ontogeny in models of antipredator behavior.  相似文献
