Background

Small body size at birth is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. Dietary habits are tightly linked with these disorders, but the association between body size at birth and adult diet has been little studied. We examined the association between body size at birth and intake of foods and macronutrients in adulthood.

Methodology/Principal Findings

We studied 1797 participants, aged 56 to 70, of the Helsinki Birth Cohort Study, whose birth weight and length were recorded. Preterm births were excluded. During a clinical study, diet was assessed with a validated food-frequency questionnaire. A linear regression model adjusted for potential confounders was used to assess the associations. Intake of fruits and berries was 13.26 g (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.56, 25.96) higher per 1 kg/m3 increase in ponderal index (PI) at birth, and 83.16 g (95% CI: 17.76, 148.56) higher per 1 kg higher birth weight. One unit higher PI at birth was associated with 0.14% of energy (E%) lower intake of fat (95% CI: -0.26, -0.03) and 0.18 E% higher intake of carbohydrates (95% CI: 0.04, 0.32) as well as 0.08 E% higher sucrose (95% CI: 0.00, 0.15), 0.05 E% higher fructose (95% CI: 0.01, 0.09), and 0.18 g higher fiber (95% CI: 0.02, 0.34) intake in adulthood. Similar associations were observed between birth weight and macronutrient intake.

Conclusions

Prenatal growth may modify later life food and macronutrient intake. Altered dietary habits could potentially explain an increased risk of chronic disease in individuals born with small body size.  相似文献

BackgroundEpidemiological evidence shows that people with thicker, or higher stage, melanomas have lower vitamin D status compared to those with thinner tumours. Evidence from experimental studies is inconsistent, but some suggest that administration of vitamin D metabolites can decrease tumour aggressiveness.ObjectivesDetermine the relationship between vitamin D status at diagnosis and melanoma thickness (as an indicator of prognosis), in a subtropical setting with high melanoma incidence.MethodsWe recruited 100 melanoma patients in Brisbane, Australia within days of their diagnosis. Data on factors previously associated with melanoma risk or prognosis were collected by questionnaire and physical examination. Serum for 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 [25(OH)D] levels was collected prior to wider excision biopsy; histological indicators of prognosis were obtained from pathology reports. We used multivariable logistic regression models to analyse the association between Breslow thickness (≥0.75 mm compared to <0.75 mm), Clark level (2–5 compared to 1) and presence of mitoses, and vitamin D status.ResultsSerum 25(OH)D <50 nmol/L (versus ≥50 nmol/L) was associated with a nearly four-fold increase in risk of having a thicker tumour (Adjusted OR = 3.82, 95% CI: 1.03, 14.14; p = 0.04, adjusted for age, sex, skin phototype, body mass index and season at diagnosis). There was no significant association with Clark level or presence of mitosis. Serum 25(OH)D levels in the highest quartile (≥69.8 nmol/L) were not associated with a more favourable prognosis.ConclusionsVitamin D deficiency at the time of melanoma diagnosis is associated with thicker tumours that are likely to have a poorer prognosis. Ensuring vitamin D levels of 50 nmol/L or higher in this population could potentially result in 18% of melanomas having Breslow thickness of <0.75 mm rather than ≥0.75 mm.  相似文献

Management of resource exploitation by the orb-weaving spider Zygiella x-notata was investigated in relation to available prey. Prey capture is studied according to prey type (cricket or fly), and the spider's behaviour (waiting without prey or consuming other prey), at the moment when a prey item was placed onto the web. Characteristics of the spider's exploitation of the previous item (feeding time, and quantities ingested) were analysed according to the type and quantity of prey presented, (1 or 2 items at 1-h intervals). Capture time did not vary in relation to prey type, nor spider activity. However, duration and quantities of certain behavioural components (biting and wrapping) did vary according to prey type and the spider's behaviour, at the moment of presentation of prey. Whatever the type of prey received, if the first item consumed was a cricket, the spiders reduced time spent feeding on this prey without any decrease in the quantities ingested.  相似文献

Emerging bacterial pathogens threaten global health and food security, and so it is important to ask whether these transitions to pathogenicity have any common features. We present a systematic study of the claim that pathogenicity is associated with genome reduction and gene loss. We compare broad-scale patterns across all bacteria, with detailed analyses of Streptococcus suis, an emerging zoonotic pathogen of pigs, which has undergone multiple transitions between disease and carriage forms. We find that pathogenicity is consistently associated with reduced genome size across three scales of divergence (between species within genera, and between and within genetic clusters of S. suis). Although genome reduction is also found in mutualist and commensal bacterial endosymbionts, genome reduction in pathogens cannot be solely attributed to the features of their ecology that they share with these species, that is, host restriction or intracellularity. Moreover, other typical correlates of genome reduction in endosymbionts (reduced metabolic capacity, reduced GC content, and the transient expansion of nonfunctional elements) are not consistently observed in pathogens. Together, our results indicate that genome reduction is a consistent correlate of pathogenicity in bacteria.  相似文献

Traditional approaches to ecotoxicology and ecological risk assessment frequently have ignored the complexities arising due to the spatial heterogeneity of natural systems. In recent years, however, ecologists have become increasingly aware of the influence of spatial organization on ecological processes. Landscape ecology provides a conceptual and theoretical framework for the analysis of spatial patterns, the characterization of spatial aspects of ecosystem function, and the understanding of landscape dynamics. Incorporating the insights of landscape ecology into ecotoxicology will enhance our ability to understand and ultimately predict the effects of toxic substances in ecological systems. Ecological risk assessments need to explicitly consider multiple spatial scales, accounting for heterogeneity within contaminated areas and for the larger landscape context. A simple simulation model is presented to illustrate the effects of spatial heterogeneity by linking an individual-based toxicokinetic model with a spatially distributed metapopulation model. Dispersal of organisms between contaminated and uncontaminated patches creates a situation where risk analysis must consider a spatial extent broader than the toxicant-contaminated area. In general, the addition of a toxicant to a source patch (i.e., a net exporter of individuals) will have a greater impact than the same toxicant addition to a sink patch (i.e., a net importer of individuals).  相似文献

Background

Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is a common anxiety disorder that usually begins in adolescence. Childhood maltreatment is highly prevalent and increases the possibility for developing a variety of mental disorders including anxiety disorders. An earlier age at onset of GAD is significantly related to maltreatment in childhood. Exploring the underpinnings of the relationship between childhood maltreatment and adolescent onset GAD would be helpful in identifying the potential risk markers of this condition.

Methods

Twenty-six adolescents with GAD and 25 healthy controls participated in this study. A childhood trauma questionnaire (CTQ) was introduced to assess childhood maltreatment. All subjects underwent high-resolution structural magnetic resonance scans. Voxel-based morphometry (VBM) was used to investigate gray matter alterations.

Results

Significantly larger gray matter volumes of the right putamen were observed in GAD patients compared to healthy controls. In addition, a significant diagnosis-by-maltreatment interaction effect for the left thalamic gray matter volume was revealed, as shown by larger volumes of the left thalamic gray matter in GAD patients with childhood maltreatment compared with GAD patients without childhood maltreatment as well as with healthy controls with/without childhood maltreatment. A significant positive association between childhood maltreatment and left thalamic gray matter volume was only seen in GAD patients.

Conclusions

These findings revealed an increased volume in the subcortical regions in adolescent GAD, and the alterations in the left thalamus might be involved in the association between childhood maltreatment and the occurrence of GAD.  相似文献

Spastic paraplegia 7 is an autosomal recessive disorder caused by mutations in the gene encoding paraplegin, a protein located at the inner mitochondrial membrane and involved in the processing of other mitochondrial proteins. The mechanism whereby paraplegin mutations cause disease is unknown. We studied two female and two male adult patients from two Norwegian families with a combination of progressive external ophthalmoplegia and spastic paraplegia. Sequencing of SPG7 revealed a novel missense mutation, c.2102A>C, p.H 701P, which was homozygous in one family and compound heterozygous in trans with a known pathogenic mutation c.1454_1462del in the other. Muscle was examined from an additional, unrelated adult female patient with a similar phenotype caused by a homozygous c.1047insC mutation in SPG7. Immunohistochemical studies in skeletal muscle showed mosaic deficiency predominantly affecting respiratory complex I, but also complexes III and IV. Molecular studies in single, microdissected fibres showed multiple mitochondrial DNA deletions segregating at high levels (38–97%) in respiratory deficient fibres. Our findings demonstrate for the first time that paraplegin mutations cause accumulation of mitochondrial DNA damage and multiple respiratory chain deficiencies. While paraplegin is not known to be directly associated with the mitochondrial nucleoid, it is known to process other mitochondrial proteins and it is possible therefore that paraplegin mutations lead to mitochondrial DNA deletions by impairing proteins involved in the homeostasis of the mitochondrial genome. These studies increase our understanding of the molecular pathogenesis of SPG7 mutations and suggest that SPG7 testing should be included in the diagnostic workup of autosomal recessive, progressive external ophthalmoplegia, especially if spasticity is present.  相似文献

Several recent studies have examined different aspects of mammalian higher order chromatin structure – replication timing, lamina association and Hi-C inter-locus interactions — and have suggested that most of these features of genome organisation are conserved over evolution. However, the extent of evolutionary divergence in higher order structure has not been rigorously measured across the mammalian genome, and until now little has been known about the characteristics of any divergent loci present. Here, we generate a dataset combining multiple measurements of chromatin structure and organisation over many embryonic cell types for both human and mouse that, for the first time, allows a comprehensive assessment of the extent of structural divergence between mammalian genomes. Comparison of orthologous regions confirms that all measurable facets of higher order structure are conserved between human and mouse, across the vast majority of the detectably orthologous genome. This broad similarity is observed in spite of many loci possessing cell type specific structures. However, we also identify hundreds of regions (from 100 Kb to 2.7 Mb in size) showing consistent evidence of divergence between these species, constituting at least 10% of the orthologous mammalian genome and encompassing many hundreds of human and mouse genes. These regions show unusual shifts in human GC content, are unevenly distributed across both genomes, and are enriched in human subtelomeric regions. Divergent regions are also relatively enriched for genes showing divergent expression patterns between human and mouse ES cells, implying these regions cause divergent regulation. Particular divergent loci are strikingly enriched in genes implicated in vertebrate development, suggesting important roles for structural divergence in the evolution of mammalian developmental programmes. These data suggest that, though relatively rare in the mammalian genome, divergence in higher order chromatin structure has played important roles during evolution.  相似文献

Background

Salt intake has been implicated in the pathogenesis of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) through studies in rodent models but not previously studied in humans. The aim of this study was to examine the association between reported addition of salt to food and the prevalence of AAA.

Methods

A risk factor questionnaire which contained a question about salt intake was included as part of a population screening study for AAA in 11742 older men. AAA presence was assessed by abdominal ultrasound imaging using a reproducible protocol.

Results

The prevalence of AAA was 6.9, 8.5 and 8.6% in men who reported adding salt to food never, sometimes and always, respectively, p = 0.005. Addition of salt to food sometimes (odds ratio [OR]: 1.22, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.03–1.44) or always (OR: 1.23, 95% CI 1.04–1.47) was independently associated with AAA after adjustment for other risk factors including age, waist-hip ratio, blood pressure, history of hypertension, high cholesterol, angina, diabetes, myocardial infarction and stroke. Salt intake was also independently associated with aortic diameter (beta 0.023, p = 0.012). In men with no prior history of hypertension, high cholesterol, angina, myocardial infarction or stroke (n = 4185), the association between addition of salt to food sometimes (OR: 1.41, 95% CI 0.96–2.08) or always (OR: 1.52, 95% CI 1.04–2.22) and AAA remained evident.

Conclusion

Reported salt intake is associated with AAA in older men. Additional studies are needed to determine whether reducing salt intake would protect against AAA.  相似文献

Post-mating sexual cannibalism occurs as a regular element of mating behaviour in a number of spider species. Frequencies of cannibalism, however, are highly variable between and within species. In Argiope bruennichi , males apparently differ in their motivation to escape a female attack but causes for this variability are unknown. We observed that the probability of sexual cannibalism is positively correlated with male age, i.e. the number of days that passed between male maturation and copulation. The mating season in this species is short with 3–4 wk and males mostly mature days before the females, whose maturation phase is longer. Consequently, as the season progresses, the availability of virgin females increases, quickly reaches a peak and then rapidly declines. In addition, the age of still unmated males increases with the season and both of these factors can potentially affect the degree of sexual cannibalism. To separate these factors, males were collected in their penultimate stage and kept until mating either with or without contact to female pheromones. Thereby, we experimentally manipulated the male's perception of female presence. Within each treatment, we formed three male age groups: (1) 2–6 d, (2) 12–16 d and (3) 22–28 d. Our results demonstrate that the probability of cannibalism was independent of male age but was explained by the treatment of males: males exposed to virgin female pheromones were significantly more likely to be cannibalised than males that were kept without female pheromones. This suggests that males change their reproductive strategy according to perceived mating prospects.  相似文献

Although the domestication process has altered the feeding behavior of dogs, some breeds still demonstrate a remarkable ability to gorge, and will eat exceptionally large quantities of food whenever it is available. Lesions in the ventromedial hypothalamus increase appetite and lead to obesity, suggesting that the autonomic nervous system plays an important role in feeding. Focusing on the autonomic activities closely involved in food intake, we investigated sympathetic activities before and after feeding in dogs. The subjects were 56 healthy dogs of 21 different breeds (29 males and 27 females). Based on feeding habits, the 56 dogs were divided into three groups: Fast (n = 19), Slow (n = 24) and Leftover (n = 13). The feeding speed and the amount of food per mouthful of the Fast dogs were significantly greater than those of the Slow and the Leftover dogs. The plasma norepinephrine level in dogs of the Fast group was significantly increased after feeding, while those in the Slow and Leftover groups were significantly decreased after feeding, compared with the pre-feeding concentrations. The low frequency/high frequency ratio of heart rate variability is a good indicator of sympathetic activity and was also significantly higher in the Fast group than in the other groups. Delayed feeding using automatic feeding equipment decreased the plasma norepinephrine concentration and low frequency/high frequency ratio observed after feeding in dogs of the Fast group. In conclusion, dogs eating rapidly with less chewing, which indicates increased sympathetic activity during feeding, may benefit from delayed feeding. The slow eating may activate the parasympathetic nervous system after feeding, which could enhance the activity of the digestive system.  相似文献

IntroductionChronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (CIDP) is one of several chronic treatable acquired demyelinating neuropathies.ObjectivesTo explore the association between the degree of demyelination in CIDP, and treatment responsiveness.MethodsA retrospective chart review of CIDP subjects assessed between 1997 and 2013 was performed to compare treatment responsiveness using different sets of criteria.Results99 CIDP patients were included, 34 with diabetes mellitus (DM). Treatment responsiveness was higher in CIDP-DM fulfilling 1 or more EFNS/PNS criteria, (63% vs. 31%, p = 0.03), and in CIDP+DM fulfilling 2 or more criteria (89% vs. 36%, p = 0.01). Nonetheless, treatment responsiveness in CIDP+DM had the highest odds ratio (3.73, p = 0.01). Similar results were also shown in simplified uniform study criteria, with 10% cut off values for CIDP-DM, compared to 30% for CIDP+DM.ConclusionIn CIDP+DM, higher degrees of demyelination are associated with treatment responsiveness, implying the need to adjust current criteria in these patients.  相似文献

Vertical leaf nitrogen (N) gradient within a canopy is classically considered as a key adaptation to the local light environment that would tend to maximize canopy photosynthesis. We studied the vertical leaf N gradient with respect to the light gradient for wheat (Triticum aestivum) canopies with the aims of quantifying its modulation by crop N status and genetic variability and analyzing its ecophysiological determinants. The vertical distribution of leaf N and light was analyzed at anthesis for 16 cultivars grown in the field in two consecutive seasons under two levels of N. The N extinction coefficient with respect to light (b) varied with N supply and cultivar. Interestingly, a scaling relationship was observed between b and the size of the canopy for all the cultivars in the different environmental conditions. The scaling coefficient of the b-green area index relationship differed among cultivars, suggesting that cultivars could be more or less adapted to low-productivity environments. We conclude that the acclimation of the leaf N gradient to the light gradient is a whole-plant process that depends on canopy size. This study demonstrates that modeling leaf N distribution and canopy expansion based on the assumption that leaf N distribution parallels that of the light is inappropriate. We provide a robust relationship accounting for vertical leaf N gradient with respect to vertical light gradient as a function of canopy size.In cereals, as in many crop species, nitrogen (N) nutrition is a major determinant in the elaboration of grain yield and quality (Lemaire and Millard, 1999; Lawlor, 2002; Hikosaka, 2005). N is involved in both meristematic and photosynthetic activities, with consequences on plant architecture and carbon acquisition and in fine on grain yield and protein concentration. Beside the total amount of N absorbed by the crop, the allocation of N among plant organs plays a key role in determining crop productivity and quality (Grindlay, 1997; Dreccer et al., 1998; Hikosaka, 2005).Light interception and leaf N content are the two main factors governing carbon assimilation at the leaf scale (Evans, 1989). For various species, both light and leaf N attenuate with cumulative leaf area index counted from the top of the canopy (Field, 1983; Hirose and Werger, 1987). Leaf N vertical gradients have been regarded as an adaptive response to the local light environment, maximizing canopy photosynthesis and N utilization efficiency (Hirose and Werger, 1987; Hikosaka et al., 1994; Drouet and Bonhomme, 1999), as N is largely contained in the assimilatory enzyme Rubisco. Theoretical studies indicated that leaf N maximizes canopy photosynthesis when it parallels the light gradient (i.e. when the light [KL] and N [KN] extinction coefficients are equal), considering that the leaf N gradient is “optimal” in accordance with the “optimization theory” (Field, 1983; Hirose and Werger, 1987; Anten et al., 1995b).Factors other than the photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) might be responsible for the observed leaf N distribution. For instance, the acropetal gradients of leaf age (Hikosaka et al., 1994; Hikosaka, 2005) and light composition (Rousseaux et al., 1999) are known to strengthen the leaf N gradient. However, the impact of each of these factors has been shown to be much less than that of the PPFD gradient (Werger and Hirose, 1991; Pons and de Jong-van Berkel, 2004), although for the grass species Brachypodium pinnatum other factors than light might be involved (Pons et al., 1993). At the molecular level, the process could be driven by the import of compounds such as cytokinins transported in the transpiration stream (Pons et al., 2001; Boonman et al., 2007). Although the actual N distribution usually follows the light gradient, in all studies it is less steep than the calculated optimal N profile maximizing canopy photosynthesis (Pons et al., 1989; Yin et al., 2003). Possible reasons for this discrepancy have been discussed in detail by Kull (2002). Sink-source relations and in particular the demand for N could modulate the light-leaf N relationship (Dreccer et al., 1998), but conflicting results have been reported regarding the effect of N availability on the light-leaf N relationship. While some authors found no effect of N availability (Sinclair and Shiraiwa, 1993; Milroy et al., 2001), others found that the N gradient relative to light (i.e. KL/KN) was steeper under low N (Hikosaka et al., 1994; Grindlay et al., 1995; Lötscher et al., 2003) or that the response of the light-leaf N relationship to N availability depended on the developmental stage (Dreccer et al., 2000). Interspecific differences in the light-leaf N relationship have also been reported and were related to differences in phenotypic plasticity (Aerts, 1996) or plant architecture (leaf stature and branching pattern; Anten et al., 1995a; Lötscher et al., 2003).Since canopy photosynthesis is dependent upon the leaf N gradient, it has been suggested that the pattern of leaf N distribution could be responsible for part of the genetic variability associated with the negative correlation between grain yield and protein concentration reported for various crop species (Dreccer et al., 1998). In wheat (Triticum aestivum), N accumulated before anthesis contributes 30% to 70% of grain N (Mi et al., 2000; Kichey et al., 2007). The efficiency of N translocation from the lower to the upper leaves may increase with the steepness of the N gradient, with only a negligible effect on canopy carbon gain integrated over the whole grain-filling period. This hypothesis is consistent with experimental studies based on a range of genotypes showing that, at a given grain yield level, grain protein concentration is positively related to the efficiency of N translocation either from the lower to the upper leaves (Wang et al., 2005) or from the leaves to the grains (Monaghan et al., 2001; Jukanti and Fischer, 2008). Only a few studies have investigated the intraspecific variability of the light-N relationship at the intraspecific level (Shiraiwa and Sinclair, 1993; Bindraban, 1999; Bertheloot et al., 2008; van Oosterom et al., 2010). For wheat, published analyses of the genetic variability of the light-leaf N relationship were limited to only two to five genotypes, and no genetic differences were found (Bindraban, 1999; Bertheloot et al., 2008).This paper focuses on the genetic variability of the vertical leaf N gradient with respect to light for wheat. Three main issues were investigated. What is the effect of N supply on the vertical distribution of leaf N? Does the distribution of leaf N with respect to light differ among genotypes? If the adjustment of leaf N to the light gradient varies with both the genotype and N supply, could this genetic and environmental variability have a unique ecophysiological determinant (driving variable)?These questions were addressed using 16 genotypes (Supplemental Table S1) covering a wide range of variation for N use efficiency (i.e. grain dry mass yield per unit of available mineral N from the soil and fertilizer), for grain protein concentration (Le Gouis et al., 2000; Foulkes et al., 2006; Gaju et al., 2011) and for the deviation from the negative correlation between grain yield and protein concentration (Oury et al., 2003). The 16 genotypes were grown in the field under two conditions of N supply (N− and N+ for low- and high-N treatments, respectively) in order to modulate crop N status at Clermont-Ferrand (CF) in France in two consecutive seasons (experiments CF07 and CF08). In addition, four of the 16 cultivars representing the variability observed for N utilization and N uptake efficiency were grown in the field under two conditions of N supply at Sutton Bonington (SB) in the United Kingdom in one season (experiment SB07). The distribution of leaf N was analyzed at anthesis. The first reason for this is that the distribution of both light and leaf N within the canopy is relatively stable from this phenological stage until almost the end of grain filling (Bertheloot et al., 2008). Whereas the canopy green area index (GAI) decreases dramatically during the grain-filling period, the structure of the canopy affecting light interception does not change significantly during that period. Both the vertical light and N distributions down the canopy are unchanged during most of the grain-filling period; therefore, the KN-to-KL ratio is constant during that period (Bertheloot et al., 2008). Similarly, Archontoulis et al. (2011) showed that KN-to-KL ratio is not modified during the vegetative and reproductive stages for field-gown sunflower (Helianthus annuus) crops. Therefore, as most of the final grain yield results from carbon assimilated after anthesis (Bidinger et al., 1977; Gebbing and Schnyder, 1999), the N distribution at anthesis is very relevant in terms of carbon assimilation and grain yield in wheat. A second reason is that the number and potential size of grains are determined around anthesis, which therefore appears as a critical stage in the formation of grain yield. A better understanding of the ecophysiological determinants of leaf N gradient at this phenological stage could consequently be crucial for improving wheat productivity and quality (Dreccer et al., 1998).  相似文献

Introduction

Previous studies have shown that cysteine-rich secretory protein containing LCCL domain 2 (CRISPLD2) is a novel lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-binding protein, and the upregulation of CRISPLD2 expression protects mice against LPS-induced lethality. The aim of this study was to examine the expression of CRISPLD2 in patients with sepsis and characterize the association of this protein with procalcitonin.

Methods

The expression of CRISPLD2 was determined in100 healthy volunteers and 119 septic patients. According to the definition of sepsis, patients were divided into three groups sepsis, severe sepsis, and septic shock. The relationship between CRISPLD2 levels and procalcitonin was also examined and statistically analyzed.

Results

The CRISPLD2 levels in healthy individuals were 219.3±69.1 µg/ml. Patients with sepsis exhibited higher CRISPLD2 levels than observed in healthy individuals (p = 0.001), but CRISPLD2 expression was not upregulated in patients with septic shock. No significant differences were observed between the levels of CRISPLD2 in surviving and non-surviving spesis patients. CRISPLD2 levels were negatively correlated with procalcitonin levels(r = −0.334, p<0.001).

Conclusions

The present study is the first to demonstrate the decreased expression of CRISPLD2 in septic shock and its association with PCT in sepsis. Background

It is known that long-term psychosocial stress may cause or contribute to different diseases and symptoms and accelerate aging. One of the consequences of prolonged psychosocial stress may be a negative effect on the levels of dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) and its sulphated metabolite dehydroepiandrosterone sulphate (DHEA-S). The aim of this study is to investigate whether levels of DHEA and DHEA-S differ in individuals who report perceived stress at work compared to individuals who report no perceived stress at work.

Methods

Morning fasting DHEA-S and DHEA levels were measured in serum in a non-stressed group (n = 40) and a stressed group (n = 41). DHEA and DHEA-S levels were compared between the groups using ANCOVA, controlling for age.

Results

The mean DHEA-S levels were 23% lower in the subjects who reported stress at work compared to the non-stressed group. Statistical analysis (ANCOVA) showed a significant difference in DHEA-S levels between the groups (p = 0.010). There was no difference in DHEA level between the groups.

Conclusions

This study indicates that stressed individual have markedly lower levels of DHEA-S. Given the important and beneficial functions of DHEA and DHEA-S, lower levels of DHEA-S may constitute one link between psychosocial stress, ill health and accelerated ageing.  相似文献

The aims of this randomized observational case control study were to quantify fixation behavior during standard automated perimetry (SAP) with different fixation targets and to evaluate the relationship between fixation behavior and threshold variability at each test point in healthy young participants experienced with perimetry. SAP was performed on the right eyes of 29 participants using the Octopus 900 perimeter, program 32, dynamic strategy. The fixation targets of Point, Cross, and Ring were used for SAP. Fixation behavior was recorded using a wearable eye-tracking glass. All participants underwent SAP twice with each fixation target in a random fashion. Fixation behavior was quantified by calculating the bivariate contour ellipse area (BCEA) and the frequency of deviation from the fixation target. The BCEAs (deg2) of Point, Cross, and Ring targets were 1.11, 1.46, and 2.02, respectively. In all cases, BCEA increased significantly with increasing fixation target size (p < 0.05). The logarithmic value of BCEA demonstrated the same tendency (p < 0.05). A positive correlation was identified between fixation behavior and threshold variability for the Point and Cross targets (ρ = 0.413–0.534, p < 0.05). Fixation behavior increased with increasing fixation target size. Moreover, a larger fixation behavior tended to be associated with a higher threshold variability. A small fixation target is recommended during the visual field test.  相似文献
