The objective of this study was to assess the effects of milk replacer and rumen inert fat on growth, testicular development, puberty, semen production and sperm motion characteristics of ram lambs reared under intensive management in semi-arid climatic conditions. Seven-day-old male lambs of Malpura breed (n=20) were divided equally into two groups. Up to weaning, the lambs in G1 group (control) were fed concentrate, green khejri (Prosopis cineraria) leaves and cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) hay along with suckling of dams, whereas lambs in G2 group were fed reconstituted milk at 17 g/lamb per day for the 1st week and at 34 g/lamb per day from 2nd week in addition to the feed inputs given in G1. During post weaning, lambs in the G1 group were given control concentrate, whereas in G2 the control concentrate supplemented with 40 g rumen inert fat per kg of feed was offered along with dry pala (Zizyphus nummularia) and ardu (Ailanthus excelsa) leaves. BWs of lambs were recorded weekly up to 6 months of age. Ram lambs of both the groups were trained for semen collection at a weekly interval from the age of 5 months and simultaneously testicular measurements were recorded fortnightly. The feeding of milk replacer and rumen inert fat had positive (P<0.05) effects on BW, testicular length, testicular volume, semen volume, sperm concentration, mass motility, % motility, % rapid, medium or slow motile spermatozoa. However, no significant effect was observed on testicular breadth, scrotal circumference, age of puberty, sperm velocities and other CASA-derived parameters. The results of this study indicate that higher plane of nutrition in the form of milk-replacer feeding during preweaning and rumen inert fat-supplemented feed during the postweaning period to growing ram lambs enhances their growth, testicular development and semen quality.  相似文献

Clun Forest and Welsh Mountain sheep were lambed over the same period and half the lambs were cross-fostered by the other breed. Two weeks after completion of lambing, half the female lambs were transferred from the lowland lambing area to fenced upland pastures (Clun-reared separate from Welsh-reared) until approximately 6 months of age, the dams being removed from the area entirely at weaning. The remaining lambs were also separately reared (according to breed of rearing ewe) on the lowland. In the latter case the male (entire) lambs were removed to an adjacent lowland paddock at weaning, the females remaining where they were.Subsequent observations when the lambs were six to seven months of age revealed differences in the pattern of grazing and resting amongst the upland reared stock which, in the case of early afternoon resting behaviour, was to a small extent related to breed of lamb but in the other patterns of behaviour studied was, to a large extent, determined by the breed of ewe that reared each lamb.At seven months of age, two mating groups were established from the lowland and upland reared ewe lambs, to which were allocated mother-reared rams in one case and fostered rams in the other. With one exception the rams were drawn from the flock separated from the lowland ewe lambs at weaning. Preferences of each ram were ascertained by the frequency with which they exhibited clear preferences but it was not established whether this reflected sexual preference. Analysis did not reveal any relationship between ewe preference and any of the factors influencing ram preference.  相似文献

Two studies were conducted to determine the importance of the postweaning environment and social milieu in regulating the expression of intraspecific aggression in Norway rats. In Experiment 1, male rats were housed either individually or in pairs at 21 days of age. In addition, one-half of the singly housed and paired animals were given experiences with intruders during maturation. At 85 days of age, all animals were given a brief intruder test and then removed from their postweaning environment and provided individually with homecages for a two week period until tested for aggression toward intruders. Results of intruder tests given during maturation indicated agonistic exchanges appeared earlier and more frequently in cages housing a single resident than cages with cohabiting males. However, agonistic exchanges between singly reared residents and intruders had detrimental consequences in adulthood especially under long-term combat situations. That is, although individually reared animals, with early fighting experiences, were capable of initiating intraspecific aggression, such individuals were unable to defend their homecage over a long period of time as evidenced by the high number of wounds and tendency to lose body weight during adult fighting.In Experiment 2, male Norway rats were reared in pairs from 21 days of age and identified as dominant or subordinate on the basis of intracolony social interactions shown during maturation. At 80 days of age, animals were paired with individually reared males in an unfamiliar cage for a 20 day period and examined for agonistic behavior toward intruders at 100 days of age. Group-reared subordinate males exhibited defensive behavior during confrontations with individually reared animals and incurred more wounds and lost more body weight than their cohabiting partner. In addition, subordinate males showed significantly fewer offensive postures toward intruders than individually reared cohabitants. In contrast, group-reared dominant animals did not differ from individually reared males in display of agonistic patterns, in number of wounds, and body weight changes during the period of cohabitation. These findings demonstrate that early rearing factors have pronounced effects on agonistic behavior. Animals experiencing defeat during development are more likely to lose agonistic confrontations in unfamiliar territory than either animals dominant in their early social interactions or animals without the experience of winning or losing agonistic encounters. These results have implications for the understanding of agonistic behavior and predicting outcomes of animal contests, and reveal important differences in agonistic experiences among animals reared in groups.  相似文献

Familiarization with individuals resulting from direct exposure is the primary mechanism mediating social recognition in many vertebrates. However, discernible phenotypic similarity among close kin may provide an additional basis for recognizing previously unencountered individuals. We investigated the existence of such a mechanism of indirect familiarity among artificially reared twin lambs, Ovis aries, that were separated shortly after birth. When they were 2-3 weeks old, we tested their recognition of familiar penmates, their unfamiliar twin and twins of familiar penmates in two-choice and paired tests. Lambs responded discriminatively to familiar penmates. When allowed to choose between their twins or twins of penmates versus an unfamiliar unrelated individual, lambs did not show any preference. Nevertheless, when paired with a twin or penmate’s twin, lambs bleated less than did those paired with an unfamiliar unrelated partner, which suggests that twins and twins of penmates were recognized. Discrimination between twin and unrelated individuals could be based either on early learning of the twin's phenotypic traits (template) before separation or on a process of indirect familiarization (comparison with familiar self cues). However, indirect familiarization was clearly implicated in the discrimination of twins of penmates; that is, lambs learned the characteristic phenotypic traits of (unrelated) penmates and detected a resemblance between those familiar individuals and their twins. Overall, the two-choice and paired tests were differentially effective procedures depending on the research question being addressed, that is, relatively simple or subtle social discrimination. OBJECTIVE: Our purpose was to assess the extent to which early weaning and other weaning-management factors affect development of postweaning chronic diarrhea in captive rhesus monkeys at the California Regional Primate Research Center between 1992 and 1995. METHODS: Data for weaning, management, and onset of diarrhea were obtained from daily records. The Cox proportional hazard model was used to assess whether the risk of chronic diarrhea was related to early weaning. RESULTS: Monkeys that were lighter at weaning had a threefold increase in risk of postweaning chronic diarrhea (P = 0.07), compared with that in heavier monkeys. An episode of preweaning diarrhea increased the risk of postweaning chronic diarrhea twofold (P = 0.08). Relocation of monkeys to outdoor facilities in the fall was associated with a fivefold decrease in risk (P < 0.001), compared with that of other seasons, and weaning in 1993 was associated with a twofold decrease in risk, compared with that of other years (P = 0.04). CONCLUSIONS: Multiple factors need to be considered for prevention of postweaning chronic diarrhea, including weaning weight, preweaning diarrhea, season weaned, and weaning conditions that change from year to year.  相似文献

Sheep meat producers derive the majority of income from sales of weaned lambs, determined by flock conception rates, litter size, and lamb survival. Field data from commercial flocks can inform sensitivity analyses of the effect of litter size on flock productivity, feed demand, and gross margin. This study adapted an established bio-economic model of a flock of breeding ewes informed by statistical relationships (from linear models) between flock litter size (lambs born per ewe lambing) and production factors (such as flock barren rate, litter birth type and lamb birth weight) identified using 156 145 animal records from the Irish national sheep breeding database. Sensitivity analyses were undertaken to investigate the effects of flock litter size on flock production, feed demand, and gross margin. Results showed that as flock litter size increased, the proportion of lambs born as multiples increased, with 14 % of lambs born as singles when flock litter size was 2.2 lambs born per ewe lambing. Flock gross margin increased from €2 205 to €7 730 as litter size increased from 1.0 to 2.0 lambs born per ewe lambing. As litter size increased from 1.0 to 2.2 lambs born per ewe lambing, flock gross margin increased linearly by, on average, €52 per 0.01 increase in litter size. At a litter size of > 2.2 lambs born per ewe lambing, flock gross margin increased on average €12 per 0.01 increase in litter size. At a litter size of 2.2 lambs born per ewe lambing, flock efficiency (at 65.0 kg of lamb weaned per ewe presented for breeding), weaning rate (at 1.5 lambs weaned per ewe presented for breeding; not including excess lambs from large litters sold within a week after birth and thus not weaned on-farm), and gross margin (at €8 500) began to plateau. The results indicate lower marginal returns in gross margin at very high flock litter size, due to the lower value of additional lambs born as triplets and quadruplets compared with single- and twin-born lambs. However, the diminishing economic returns occurred at higher flock litter size than are currently biologically achieved in most flocks. Quantification from this analysis demonstrates how the value of increasing the number of lambs born changes at very high flock litter size, which can inform the priorities and performance benchmarking for international sheep meat production industries.  相似文献

Brain docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22:6n-3) accumulates rapidly during brain development and is essential for normal neurological function. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether brain development was the critical period in which DHA deficiency leads to dysregulation of the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal (HPA) axis in response to stress later in life. Rats were exposed to an n-3 fatty acid-deficient diet or the same diet supplemented with fish oil as an n-3 fatty acid-adequate diet either throughout the preweaning period from embryo to weaning at 3 weeks old or during the postweaning period from 3 to 10 weeks old. Exposure to the n-3 fatty acid-deficient diet during the preweaning period resulted, at weaning, in a significant decrease in hypothalamic DHA levels and a reduced male offspring body weight. DHA deficiency during the preweaning period significantly increased and prolonged restraint stress-induced changes in colonic temperature and serum corticosterone levels, caused a significant increase in GABAA antagonist-induced heart rate changes and enhanced depressive-like behavior in the forced swimming test and anxiety-like behavior in the plus-maze test in later life. These effects were not seen in male rats fed the n-3 fatty acid-deficient diet during the postweaning period. These results suggest that brain development is the critical period in which DHA deficiency leads to excessive HPA responses to stress and elevated behavioral indices of depression and anxiety in adulthood. We propose that these effects of hypothalamic DHA deficiency during brain development may involve a GABAA receptor-mediated mechanism.  相似文献

Fostering an additional lamb on to a ewe with a single lamb of her own was attempted in Dorset, Corriedale and Merino ewes restrained by the neck in pens for up to 12 days. Fostering occurred more rapidly in Dorsets than in Merinos, and success rates tended to be higher in Dorsets (81%) than the other breeds (73% in Corriedales and 69% in Merinos). The use of screens at the level of the ewe's neck to limit her olfactory examination of the lambs was more successful than when full olfactory contact was allowed. The prevention of any close olfactory contact resulted in an intermediate rate of acceptance, even though acceptance was apparently based on olfaction, as shown by universal rejection of strange alien lambs. Acceptance tests done within a few minutes of release from restraint were found not to reflect accurately the final level of acceptance, since some lambs came to be accepted within a day of being released. Further acceptances, that developed several days after release into a flock of ewes and lambs, emphasize an important role of the lamb in maintaining contact with the ewe. With few exceptions, lambs accepted when released from the pens were still accepted after a week or so in the flock.Dorset ewes given one or two foster lambs in the absence of their own lamb accepted the fosters within 9 days.Restraint fostering had no apparent harmful effects on the ewes or lambs, but had the disadvantages of being laborious and of soiling the ewes' wool. It has the advantage of providing lambs with an assured milk supply, and could prove useful for ewes that have failed to accept lambs under other methods.  相似文献

On studying the enzymatic profile of serum muscle specific enzymes (ALT, AST, LDH and CPK) in two sheep flocks one free while the other was endemic with stiff lamb disease it was found that: (1) Serum muscle specific enzymes levels were significantly increased in lambs of the endemic flock when compared with those from the non-endemic one. (2) Vitamin E and selenium administration was followed by significant decrease in enzymes levels in subclinically affected lambs of the endemic flock, while no changes occurred in lambs of the control, non-endemic flock one-week after administration. (3) Lambs in the endemic flock were born with relatively high serum enzyme levels, which began to increase significantly and gradually from the second week of life and up, reaching maximum levels at the fourth week of age. At this age, most of the lambs began to show typical symptoms of the disease. (4) Clinical improvement accompanied with pronounced drop in levels of these enzymes occurred after treatment with vitamin E and selenium preparation in clinically affected lambs.  相似文献

Comparisons are made of the interstrain fighting behavior of adult male mice from two inbred strains (ST-albino; CBA-black-agouti), raised in one of three postweaning social situations: 1) isolated from other males, 2) reared with males of the same strains, or 3) reared with males of the opposite strain. Using the fighting behavior of isolated males as a baseline, it is found that each type of early social experience affects the fighting behavior of the males from each of the two inbred strains differently, indicating that the functional relationships between genotype and environment studied in these experiments are nonadditive. The importance of these results in describing the norm of reaction of a behavioral phenotype and in extrapolating data from one experiment to another is discussed.  相似文献

Two months before beginning an autumn breeding season, ten 18-month-old Debouillet rams were randomly allotted to one of two dietary treatments. Five rams were offered a complete pelleted diet containing 3.5% cottonseed meal (CSM) and five were fed a similar diet containing 7% undigested, irradiated (1 Mrad gamma-irradiation) sewage solids (SS, Las Cruces, NM, municipal sewage) during the ensuing nine-month period. Ram body weights did not differ (P>0.10) between treatments nor was grease fleece weight (six-month clip) influenced by dietary SS. Analysis of serum constituents did not reveal any treatment effects. Neither quantity nor quality of sperm was influenced by treatment. Rams were mated to both CMS- and SS-fed ewes and dietary SS did not adversely influence (P>0.25) ram or ewe reproductive performance. Paternal sewage consumption did not alter (P>0.10) preweaning performance of lambs; however, ewes consuming SS produced lambs that weighed less (P<0.05) at weaning. Neither paternal nor maternal treatments influenced (P>0.10) lamb weights or gains during an 84-day postweaning feedlot trial. When each ram was challenged with 50 mug gonadotropin releasing hormone, both groups responded with a similar testosterone surge. These data suggest that a diet containing 7% SS does not impair reproductive function, testosterone production, offspring performance or health of fine-wool rams.  相似文献

Ewe lambs of the Ethiopian Menz breed were assigned at weaning (90+/-3 days) to four levels of nutrition (poor, low, medium and high) to achieve different premating growth rates with or without treatment for endoparasites. A concentrate mixture providing 2.5 Mcal/kg dry matter (DM) metabolizable energy and 15.2 g/kg DM digestible protein was used. Improved nutrition increased lamb postweaning average daily weight gain up to puberty by 6 to 26 g/day and the conception rate to first estrus by 9 to 16% while it reduced the mortality rate by 24 to 31% and age at first lambing by 2 to 5 months. Lambs reached puberty (age at first estrus) at 16.9+/-0.1 kg (+/-SEM) or 60% of mature body weight and 350+/-12 days of age. The onset of puberty was advanced by weaning weight (P<0.05), itself being well correlated with birth weight (r = 0.51, P<0.001), and by level of nutrition (high=299+/-19, medium=301+/-18, low=383+/-23 and poor=454+/-31 days, P<0.001) through enhanced growth rate (r = -0.82, P<0.001). No independent effect of drenching for endoparasites on pubertal development was observed (P>0.05), but its interaction with season-of-birth improved the growth of lambs born during the period of short rains (P<0.05). Overall mean litter size at first lambing was 1.07; the twinning rate was 6.5% and the birth weight was 1.9+/-0.1 kg. Up to 13.4% of newborn lambs, averaging 1.3+/-0.6 kg, died on the day of parturition. The results indicate that improved growth rate and body weight, resulting from better postweaning nutrition, affects the attainment of puberty in Menz ewe lambs. Mitigation of nutrition stress and endoparasitic infection depending on season-of-birth would thus increase the annual reproductive rate of breeding ewes and flock productivity.  相似文献

Under field conditions, dominant rams may prevent mating by other rams, thereby depressing flock fertility. However, little is known about the effects of social rank on prepuberal reproductive development in male lambs. The objective of this experiment was to determine if social rank of lambs is related to body weight, scrotal circumference, testosterone concentrations, semen production and courtship behavior until 38 weeks of age. An additional aim was to characterize male-male sexual behavior and to determine if this behavior was related to social rank. Body weight, scrotal circumference and testosterone serum concentrations were measured weekly in 13 male lambs. In addition, semen was obtained by electroejaculation, and sexual behavior towards non-estrous ewes was registered every 2 weeks. Male-male mounts were also recorded weekly. Individual social rank success indexes were determined using the food competition test when lambs were 3 and 6 months old. The five rams with greater (GR) and the five with lesser (LR) success indexes were used in the experiment. Body weight and scrotal circumference increases were greater in GR than in LR lambs. Testosterone concentrations increased with age, but were not related to social rank. Semen characteristics matured earlier in GR than in LR lambs. Most courtship and mating behaviors (lateral approaches, flehmen, ejaculations and ejaculations/total mounts) increased with age, but no effect of social rank was observed. The number of ano-genital sniffing and mount attempts increased with age and was greater in GR than LR. The total number of male-male mounts in which each lamb took part was positively related with the success index (r=0.48; P=0.05), and tended to be related with the number of times each lamb was mounted (r=0.42; P=0.06). No relation was observed between the number of times each lamb mounted and the social rank success index. We observed that GR lambs mature earlier than LR lambs, which is reflected by a greater increase of their body weight and scrotal circumference. Semen production and male-female sexual behavior also occurred earlier in high-ranked than in low-ranked lambs. It remains to be determined if low-ranked lambs can achieve similar development than high-ranked lambs over longer time intervals, or if their maximum developmental capacity is lower than the maximum obtained by high-ranked lambs.  相似文献

This experiment investigates how the maternal presence influences the effect of additional human contact in early age on the reaction of lambs to their stockperson. Forty twin-born lambs were involved in this experiment during their first 4 days of life. Ten pairs of twins were reared artificially from 12h of age. One of each litter (AF, n=10) received 6.5+/-0.7 sessions of 30min of separation from the twin (with a wire fence) with 5min of gentling and feeding (suckling from a bottle and from a bucket fitted with a rubber teat). The other twin was not treated. Ten pairs of twins were reared with their dam and received 6.6+/-0.7 sessions of treatment. One twin (MAF, n=10) received the same treatment as AF. The other twin (M, n=10) was separated for 30min from the dam and had no human contact. From the age of 70+/-7h, lambs were tested in a social isolation test (alone for 1min, with the familiar stockman for 2min, alone again for 1min), in a Preference test (2min) between an unfamiliar maternal ewe and the familiar stockman, and, for the AF lambs only, in a Preference test (2min) between their familiar and an unfamiliar stockman. Eight AF lambs learned to suck on their own from the bucket of milk by the end of the experiment compared to only one MAF (P<0.001). AF lambs approached the human more (P<0.01), vocalised less (P<0.01) and walked less (P<0.01) during the social isolation test than animals reared with their mother (M and MAF). AF did not show any preference between the stockman and the unfamiliar maternal ewe while M and MAF lambs chose the ewe (P<0.05). AF lambs discriminated the familiar from an unfamiliar stockman only if they had learned to suck from the bucket during the treatment. Nevertheless MAF lambs vocalised less than M (P<0.05) in the presence of the stockman during the social isolation test, indicating a possible reduction of isolation distress. These results show that artificially reared lambs are preferentially motivated to interact with a familiar human after only a few days of contact. Moreover, they highlight the difficulty in using a feeding reward to improve the human-lamb relationship when lambs are reared permanently with their dams. However, the results suggest that early gentling improves the human-animal relationship whatever the maternal environment.  相似文献

Basal plasma concentrations (four 30-min samples) and GnRH-induced release of gonadotrophins were measured every 15 days between 30 and 90 days and at 110 days of age in Merino ewe lambs from the prolific Booroola ('B') flock (n = 18-23), the medium prolificacy ('T') flock (n = 14-20), and the 'O' flock (n = 4-8) of low prolificacy. At ages of 30 and 45 days B ewe lambs had mean basal plasma FSH concentrations of 145 and 122 ng/ml which were significantly higher (P less than 0.01) than those seen in T (45 and 53 ng/ml), and O (39 and 38 ng/ml) flock ewes. Between 60 and 110 days of age there were no significant differences between genotypes. The increment in FSH concentrations above basal levels induced by the subcutaneous injection of 100 micrograms synthetic GnRH was only significantly (P less than 0.05) greater in B than T and O genotype ewe lambs at 110 days of age but not at other ages. The basal plasma FSH differences between the B, T and O genotypes at 30 and 45 days of age were not consistently related to the size of litter in which lambs were born. At 30 days of age the mean plasma LH concentration of B, T, and O flock lambs were 2.6 +/- 0.5, 1.2 +/- 0.6 and 0.7 +/- 0.8 ng/ml respectively. These differences were not significant. Neurocranial growth during the first 40 days of postnatal development was biometrically investigated relative to the specific parameters of calvarium length and width; basioccipital length and width; basisphenoid length; biparietal width; frontal bone length and cranial vault length. Specimens were obtained from rat litters subject to moderate nutritional suppression by raising the litter numbers above the norm via the cross-fostering technique and causing the overtaxing of the lactational capacity. Alterations in growth rate occurred throughout the pre- and postweaning periods with clearly demarcated phases of growth. Male and female growth in the preweaning period was uniform within each litter type but the phasic growth changes in the experimental litters differed from the control litters with regression line breakage emerging at different points and altering the phasic lengths. The preweaning phasic spectrum in both control and experimental litters was evidently linked to the maternal lactation capacity--relative to quantity and duration. Weaning was insidious in both litter types but occurred earlier in the experimental litters although the continuity of growth was maintained up to the end of the definitive preweaning period (day 20). The definitive postweaning period (day 21-40) showed considerable heterogeneity--unsatisfactory scatter--with differing regression line breakage points and phasic lengths. Analysis based on the total period (day 1-40) brought compensatory adjustments and indicated more acceptable phasic patterns in the postweaning period with confirmation of catch-up growth in the experimental litters. Allometric analysis of the parameters revealed varying rates of growth, line breakage points and differing phasic lengths indicating that each neurocranial parameter and the skeletal unit forming it had an individual characteristic response spectrum mostly attributable to the functional matrix with emphasis on the capsular rather than the periosteal.  相似文献

A total of 24 dogs (11 Komondorok, 9 Great Pyrenees and 4 Akbash Dogs) were placed with rangeland sheep to test their effectiveness in reducing losses of sheep to predators. All but 1 of the dogs (Komondor) had been reared from puppyhood with lambs. Seven of the dogs (4 Komondorok, 1 Great Pyrenees and 2 Akbash Dogs) were determined to be unsuitable for rangeland use after a relatively short period (1–6 weeks), primarily because of their rambunctious behavior and their lack of attentiveness to the sheep. Three of the 24 dogs (2 Komondorok and 1 Akbash Dog) died before their performance could be adequately evaluated. Two of the dogs (Komondorok) were relatively unsuccessful, but details of their performance were not available. The paper focuses on 12 trials with the remaining 12 dogs (3 Komondorok, 8 Great Pyrenees and 1 Akbash Dog). In 7 of the 12 trials, a pair of dogs or a single dog appeared to be influential in reducing the loss of sheep to predators. The effectiveness of the dogs in 2 trials was questionable, and in 3 of the trials, the dogs had little apparent influence on the number of sheep killed by predators. The dogs that appeared most effective barked at night, patrolled the area around the flock, and were aggressive to animals that came near the sheep. A variety of problems occurred when using the dogs, and benefits other than a reduction in predation, such as facilitating trailing and keeping the flock together, were noted in several of the trials. The use of dogs to protect rangeland sheep appears to be a practical technique, however, as with other forms of control, dogs will probably not eliminate predation. Twelve diverse strains of Drosophila melanogaster have been examined with respect to their individual fitness components and with respect to their relative performance under competitive and noncompetitive conditions. Individual fitness components included estimates of time until successful copulation (t), fecundity (f) and egg-to-adult viability (v), and a composite index of overall fitness of the form fv/t was used for comparisons among strains. Noncompetitive performance was assessed in terms of the biomass (standing crop) and productivity of equilibrium experimental populations. Competitive performance was assessed in terms of relative competitive ability vis-à-vis a standard compound-autosome-bearing strain in single-generation tests. A significant correlation was found between the composite index of individual fitness components and the competitive compound-autosome test. Although the biomass and productivity of equilibrium populations were correlated with each other, neither of these noncompetitive measures was correlated with individual fitness components or with the composite index. We suggest that the performance of strains in such noncompetitive tests may be related to what Wright has called the "mean selective value" of the populations. Judging from their association with the composite index of individual fitness components, competitive tests such as the compound-autosome test seem to be related more nearly to the average Darwinian fitness of the populations.  相似文献

Although the UK is the largest lamb meat producer in Europe, there are limited data available on sheep flock performance and on how sheep farmers manage their flocks. The aims of this study were to gather evidence on the types of disease control practices implemented in sheep flocks, and to explore husbandry factors associated with flock productivity. A questionnaire focusing on farm characteristics, general husbandry and flock health management was carried out in 648 farms located in the UK over summer 2016. Abattoir sales data (lamb sales over 12 months) was compared with the number of breeding ewes on farm to estimate flock productivity (number of lambs sold for meat per 100 ewes per farm per year). Results of a multivariable linear regression model, conducted on 615 farms with complete data, indicated that farms vaccinating ewes against abortion and clostridial agents and administering a group 4/5 anthelmintic to ewes (as recommended by the Sustainable Control of Parasites in Sheep Initiative) during quarantining had a greater flock productivity than farms not implementing these actions (P<0.01 and 0.02, respectively). Flocks with maternal breed types had higher productivity indexes compared with flocks with either pure hill or terminal breeds (P<0.01). Farms weighing lambs during lactation had greater productivity than those not weighing (P<0.01). Importantly, these actions were associated with other disease control practices, for example, treating individual lame ewes with an antibiotic injection, weaning lambs between 13 and 15 weeks of age and carrying out faecal egg counts, suggesting that an increase in productivity may be associated with the combined effect of these factors. This study provides new evidence on the positive relationship between sheep flock performance and disease control measures and demonstrates that lamb sales data can be used as a baseline source of information on flock performance and for farm benchmarking. Further research is needed to explore additional drivers of flock performance.  相似文献

Standard housing for laboratory mice severely restricts natural behaviour and the control that the animal has over its environment. Providing the cage with objects is a method that has been used to both increase environmental complexity, promote the performance of natural behaviour and provide greater controllability for the animal. This method of furnishing cages has mostly been studied in adult animals, and little is known about the influence that the preweaning environment has on the behaviour of mice as adults. This study aimed to investigate the effects on mice behaviour of preweaning and postweaning housing environment. In this experiment, 64 pairs of animals of the strain C57BL/6J were used. Half of the animals were born and reared until weaning in standard cages and the other half in cages twice the size of the standard and furnished with nesting material, a cardboard tube, a PVC nest box and a wooden chewblock. After weaning, half the animals in each group were changed to the other type of cage, whereas the other half remained in the same environment; in both cases they were kept in single-sex pairs of littermates. Behaviour during the dark, active period was studied through video recordings. We found no main effects of preweaning environment on behaviour; however, mice moved from furnished to standard cages at weaning showed a decrease in inactive behaviour at four weeks of age. Mice housed after weaning in standard cages spent less time inactive, and more time engaging in activities like feeding and drinking, self-grooming and allogrooming. A sex difference was also found, in that females showed a greater performance of exploratory behaviour as well as a greater prevalence of stereotypies. The use of different objects and locations within the furnished cage was also analysed at both ages. Results show that at eight weeks of age mice spent more time at the top of the cage, and that the use of the nest box (although not for resting) increased between four and eight weeks. Mice were found to use the nest box as a nesting site/sleeping place only at age four weeks, whereas they always used the nesting material for sleeping.  相似文献
