  • 1.1. Polyamines were extracted from the guts and ovaries of the sea urchin Anthocidoris crassispina, and the guts and flesh of the sea cucumber Stichopus japonicus and the sea squirt Halocynthia roretzi, the oyster Crassostrea gigas and the short-necked clam Tapes philippinarum, and analyzed by ion-exchange high-performance liquid chromatography and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry.
  • 2.2. Norspermidine and norspermine as well as putrescine, cadaverine, spermidine, spermine and agmatine were the ubiquitous polyamines in these invertebrates. These results suggest the widespread distribution of norspermidine and norspermine in invertebrates.
  • 3.3. Thermopentamine, thermohexamine and homothermohexamine were found in the sea urchin. This in the first report on the occurence of thermopentamine and hexaamine in invertebrates.
  • 4.4. Homospermidine, canavalmine, aminopropylhomospermidine, homospermine, caldopentamine, homocaldopentamine and aminopropylcanavalmine were found in the sea cucumber. Homospermidine, aminopropylhomospermidine and homospermine were found in the squirt. This is the first report on the occurence of canavalmine, aminopropylhomospermidine, homospermine, homocaldopentamine and aminopropylcanavalmine in invertebrates.

  • 1.1. The total histone complement of early plutei were compared with that of intermediate and late larvae of the sea urchin Tetrapygus niger.
  • 2.2. Electrophoretic comparison indicates that there are quantitative and qualitative shifts of the five classes throughout late larval development.
  • 3.3. The strong similarity in the amino acid composition of total histones isolated from early, intermediate and late plutei indicates that the observed electrophoretic heterogeneity is due to post-translational modifications.

  • 1.1. The concentrations of echinochrome-A in coelomic fluid from healthy specimens of the sea urchin Echinus esculentus (L.) ranged from 3 to 60 μg/ml, with a geometric mean of 14 μg/ml.
  • 2.2. Echinochrome-A (50 μg/ml) dissolved in sea water, with the aid of mammalian proteins as dispersants, was bactericidal or bacteriostatic towards six out of seven strains of marine gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria.
  • 3.3. Echinochrome-A is suggested as a major factor in the bactericidal activity of coelomic fluid from E. esculentus.

  • 1.1. d-Alanine has been found in appreciable amounts in the eggs and embryos of the sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus.
  • 2.2. The content of d-alanine, expressed as pmol/egg or embryo, is 1.32 in the egg, 0.81 in the blastula, 0.54 in the gastrula and 0.60 in the pluteus.
  • 3.3. The percentage of d-alanine with respect to the total alanine (d + l) decreases during embryonic development.
  • 4.4. d-Amino acid oxidase, d-alanine transaminase and d-alanine racemase activities were found neither in eggs nor in embryos.
  • 5.5. Therefore, it does not appear likely that d-alanine is subject to oxidative metabolism.
  • 6.6. The decrease in this d-amino acid during development may be due to its utilization in the synthesis of a more complex molecule.

  • 1.1. The lipid components of three animals, the rock crab Nectocarcinus integrifons, the rock flathead Platycephalus laevigatus and the southern garfish Hyporhamphus melanochir, feeding in the seagrass beds at Corner Inlet, Victoria, Australia have been examined in detail in order to provide further information on seagrass community structure.
  • 2.2. Biological marker compounds detected within animal gut content material were used to recognize dietary sources and then utilized by community members.
  • 3.3. Both H. melanochir and N. integrifons have been shown to ingest and to varying degrees incorporate seagrass lipid material, thus further confirming the importance of seagrass carbon in the Corner Inlet environment.
  • 4.4. The southern sea garfish H. melanochir is observed to remove C18 PUFAs (polyunsaturated fatty acids) from ingested seagrass material.
  • 5.5. Seagrass sterols are altered during incorporation into the lipids of this fish.
  • 6.6. Lipid-rich digestive juices play a role in the digestive processes of all three animals.
  • 7.7. Components tentatively identified as (NMI) (non-methylene interrupted) fatty acids have been detected in the lipids of the garfish H. melanochir and the crab N. integrifons.
  • 8.8. The fecal material of all three animals represent possible sources of these lipids (NMI acids) in Corner Inlet sediments.
  • 9.9. Based on lipid compositional data, N. integrifons feeds on Posidonia australis detritus and associated epiphyte material.
  • 10.10. The removal of both plant and epibiota cellular lipids along the digestive tract of the crab was observed, although structural components such as long chain mono- and α,ω-dicarboxylic acids, which have been previously recognized as seagrass marker lipids are not directly absorbed.

  • 1.1. Twenty-eight peptides were isolated from the egg jelly of sea urchins, Tripneustes gratilla, Pseudoboletia maculata, Strongylocentrotus nudus, Echinometra mathaei (type A and B) and Heterocentrotus mammillatus and their amino acid sequences were determined.
  • 2.2. Two of the peptides obtained from T. gratilla egg jelly possessed a bromophenylalanine (Br-Phe) residue in their sequences (Gly-(Br-Phe)-Asn-Leu-Asn-Gly-Gly-Gly-Val-Gly and Gly-(Br-Phe)-Asp-Leu-Asn-Gly-Gly-Gly-Val-Gly).
  • 3.3. All of the peptides elevated cyclic GMP concentrations in the spermatozoa of the respective sea urchin and caused a shift in the apparent mol. wt of a major sperm protein of the respective sea urchin.
  • 4.4. They stimulated respiration rates of the spermatozoa of Hemicentrotus pulcherrimus as well as their own species.
  • 5.5. One-half maximal concentrations of the peptides for respiratory stimulation of H. pulcherrimus spermatozoa were between 10−11 M and 10−9 M except a methionine-containing peptide which was about 10−7 M.

The light irradiation at examined wavelengths between 360 and 630 nm enhanced the respiratory rate in the presence of CO in sperm, as well as eggs, of the sea urchins, Anthocidaris crassispina and Hemicentrotus pulcherrimus, the starfish, Asterina pectinifera, and the echiuroid, Urechis unicinctus.
  • 2.2. The maximum peaks of stimulating effects of light irradiation on CO-insensitive respiration were found at wavelengths of 430, 530 and 570 nm in sperm of these species.
  • 3.3. The respiration in the presence of CO was insensitive to light irradiation in sperm and eggs of the oyster, Crassostrea gigas and the tunicate, Ciona intestinaris.

  • 1.1. Seed extracts of 20 plants species belonging to the family Cucurbitaceae were examined for their ability to inhibit protein synthesis in rabbit reticulocyte lysate and induce mid-term abortion in mice.
  • 2.2. Eleven extracts were found to inhibit protein synthesis by about or over 90%, seven extracts produced about 80% inhibition, one caused about 70% inhibition and one brought about approx. 40% inhibition, when the extracts were tested at a final concentration of 10 μg per ml.
  • 3.3. All of the seed extracts possessed potent mid-term abortifacient activity.
  • 4.4. Sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of the seed extracts disclosed the existence of a Coomassie Blue-stainable band with a mol. wt of ca 30,000 Da. This band probably accounts for the protein synthesis inhibiting and mid-term abortifacient activities.
  • 5.5. There was a similarity in the electrophoretograms of seed extracts of plants belonging to the same genus.

  • 1.1. Two types of acid phosphatases from sea urchin eggs and embryos were studied in three Japanese species, Hemicentrotus pulcherrimus, Anthocidaris crassispina and Pseudocentrotus depressus.
  • 2.2. Acid phosphatase type 1, designated AcP-1, hydrolysed only flavin mononucleotide besides p-nitrophenylphosphate. The activity of AcP-1 was not inhibited by NaF and tartrate. This enzyme showed molecular weight between 14,000 and 16,000 by gel filtration through Sephadex G-75.
  • 3.3. The higher molecular weight type of acid phosphatase, designated AcP-2, showed relatively high substrate specificity toward ADP and ATP. Molecular weight of AcP-2 ranged from 42,000 to 48,000 by gel filtration through Sephadex G-100.
  • 4.4. Some properties of AcP-2 from Sphaerechinus granularis embryos are also described.

  • 1.1. Extracts of roots, seeds and fruits of seventeen plant species belonging to Family Cucurbitaceae were examined for the ability to inhibit protein synthesis in rabbit reticulocyte lysate and induce mid-term abortion in mice.
  • 2.2. Out of the 22 tissue extracts examined, 16 were found to inhibit protein synthesis by >90%, three caused 65–85% inhibition and 3 caused <25% inhibition.
  • 3.3. In general, there was a close correlation between protein synthesis inhibiting activity and mid-term abortifacient activity of the tissue extracts.
  • 4.4. SDS-PAGE of the tissue extracts revealed the presence of a Coomassie Blue-stainable band with a mol. wt of ca 30,000. The data suggest that this band is responsible for the protein synthesis inhibiting and mid-term abortifacient activities.

  • 1.1. Histones were isolated from plutei larvae of the sea urchin Tetrapygus niger and analysed electrophoretically. Individual histones were purified and their amino acid compositions were determined.
  • 2.2. The electrophoretic analysis revealed that larval histones are microheterogeneous; H1 exhibits four subforms, the nucleosomal core histones H2A, H2B and H3 were resolved into three subforms each and H4 had two subforms.
  • 3.3. The comparisons of the amino acid compositions of plutei larvae histones with data from the literature of homonimus late variants isolated from gastrulas of other sea urchin species, indicate that late histone variants are conserved proteins with a very slight degree of species specificity and with general features of classical histones.

  • 1.1. Feeding experiments with β,β-carotene, canthaxanthin and astaxanthin on the sea urchin Pseudocentrotus depressus were investigated.
  • 2.2. In the case of β,β-carotene group, β-carotene was accumulated, β-isocryptoxanthin appeared and β-echinenone increased 6.8 times as much as the control group. On the other hand, in canthaxanthin and astaxanthin groups, canthaxanthin and astaxanthin increased significantly, respectively. The metabolic products of these carotenoids could not be found.
  • 3.3. It was concluded that β,β-carotene was bioconverted to β-echinenone via β-isocryptoxanthin in P. depressus and could not be oxidatively metabolized beyond β-echinenone.
