Paraliparis orcadensis, from the South Orkney Islands (Scotia Sea), at 1.253 m depth, differs from all other congeneric species by the following combination of characters: a suture between upper and lower hypural plates, P 19 (13 + 3 + 3), none rudimentary, shortest notch ray 6.0% standard length, head length 15.6% standard length, short maxillary, gill slit above P base, three radials, symphyseal pores very closely set and body uniformly dark-grey coloured. Relationships of this new species with P. cerasinus, P. devriesi, P. mawsoni and P. tetrapteryx are discussed. Accepted: 9 November 1999  相似文献

Molluscs in general, and bivalves in particular, exhibit an extraordinary degree of mitochondrial gene order variation when compared with other metazoans. The complete mitochondrial genome of Solen grandis (Bivalvia: Solenidae) was determined using long-PCR and genome walking techniques. The entire mitochondrial genome sequence of S. grandis is 16,784 bp in length, and contains 36 genes including 12 protein-coding genes (atp8 is absent), 2 ribosomal RNAs, and 22 tRNAs. All genes are encoded on the same strand. Compared with other species, it bears a novel gene order. Besides these, we find a peculiar non-coding region of 435 bp with a microsatellite-like (TA)12 element, poly-structures and many hairpin structures. In contrast to the available heterodont mitochondrial genomes from GenBank, the complete mtDNA of S. grandis has the shortest cox3 gene, and the longest atp6, nad4, nad5 genes.  相似文献

We have developed a procedure for the long-term storage of lobster (Homarus) sperm. Sperm are collected from males by electrically stimulating the area around the gonopore. They are transferred with a bamboo stick to a plastic test tube containing paraffin oil and are stored for variable periods of time at 4–7°C. Sperm stored up to 289 days appear morphologically normal (equivalent to unstored sperm) when examined by phase contrast microscopy and electron microscopy, and morphologically normal sperm are able to undergo acrosome reactions. After longer periods of storage, degenerative changes begin to develop in sperm. These include loss of the nuclear spikes, condensation of the subacrosomal material, and distortion of the acrosome. Sperm stored better in spermatophores that had thick walls than in those with thin walls. In some spermatophores, bacteria were found in the sperm mass after storage; in general, sperm in these spermatophores were morphologically abnormal. This technique provides a means for saving lobster sperm for subsequent use in experiments or for artificial insemination of female lobsters. It may be adaptable to other invertebrate species that produce spermatophores.  相似文献

Under dissociated sperm transfer, (non-pairing) males deposit spermatophores on a substrate, while females seek spermatophores and pick up sperm on their own. Spermatophore expenditures of non-pairing males should be high, due to the increased uncertainty of sperm uptake by a female. In this study I examined spermatophore expenditures in two eriophyoid species that differed in the degree of dissociation between sexes: (1) Aculus fockeui (Nalepa and Trouessart) males rarely visit quiescent female nymphs (QFNs), and mostly deposit spermatophores all over the leaves, whereas (2) Aculops allotrichus (Nalepa) males guard QFNs for many hours and deposit several spermatophores beside them. Males of both species were collected from the field and tested in solitude. Aculus fockeui males deposited on average 19.1 spermatophores per day, whereas A. allotrichus deposited only 3.6 spermatophores per day, and had a very large coefficient of variation. Males and spermatophores of A. allotrichus were significantly smaller and contained less sperm than those of A. fockeui. In both eriophyoids, spermatophore size was fitted to the size of female genitalia and the height of females. The ratio between the diameter of spermatophore head and the width of a female genital coverflap was 0.6, whereas the ratio between the female leg and the length of spermatophore stalk was 0.5. Several factors could be responsible for the discrepancy in spermatophore expenditures between species. Among other factors, the effects of male size, male reproductive strategy and female genitalia size on spermatophore output and size of spermatophores are discussed.  相似文献

Understanding genome differentiation is important to compare and transfer genomic information between taxa, such as from model to non-model organisms. Comparative genetic mapping can be used to assess genome differentiation by identifying similarities and differences in chromosome organization. Following release of the assembled Eucalyptus grandis genome sequence (January 2011; ), a better understanding of genome differentiation between E. grandis and other commercially important species belonging to the subgenus Symphyomyrtus is required. In this study, comparative genetic mapping analyses were conducted between E. grandis, Eucalyptus urophylla, and Eucalyptus globulus using high-density linkage maps constructed from Diversity Array Technology and microsatellite molecular markers. There were 236–393 common markers between maps, providing the highest resolution yet achieved for comparative mapping in Eucalyptus. In two intra-section comparisons (section MaidenariaE. globulus and section LatoangulataeE. grandis vs. E. urophylla), ∼1% of common markers were non-syntenic and within chromosomes 4.7–6.8% of markers were non-colinear. Consistent with increasing taxonomic distance, lower synteny (6.6% non-syntenic markers) was observed in an inter-section comparison between E. globulus and E. grandis × E. urophylla consensus linkage maps. Two small chromosomal translocations or duplications were identified in this comparison representing possible genomic differences between E. globulus and section Latoangulatae species. Despite these differences, the overall high level of synteny and colinearity observed between section MaidenariaLatoangulatae suggests that the genomes of these species are highly conserved indicating that sequence information from the E. grandis genome will be highly transferable to related Symphyomyrtus species.  相似文献

Roegneria grandis was hybridized withR. ciliaris var.japonensis (2n = 28, SSYY),Elymus caninus (2n = 28, SSHH), andPseudoroegneria spicata (2n = 28, SSSS). Chromosome pairing was studied in parents and hybrids. It is concluded from this study that: (i)R. grandis is an allotetraploid species and contains the basic genomes S and Y: (ii) a certain degree of homoeology exists between the S and Y genomes of the species studied.  相似文献

The spermatophores of Amblypygi and Uropygi are complicated structurs and vary in different species. In Mastigoproctus, the size and shape of the spermatophores prevent bastardation between M. giganteus and M. brasilianus. Taxonomic and phylogenetical implications are discussed.

Single isolates of a mycobiont isolated from Pisonia grandis R. Br., Pisolithus tinctorius (Pers.) Coker & Couch and Tylospora fibrillosa (Burt.) Donk were compared with regard to their relative abilities to produce key enzymes of inorganic nitrogen assimilation. Nitrate reductase (NR) activities in the P. grandis mycobiont and T. fibrillosa were significantly lower than in P. tinctorius. While specific activities for glutamate dehydrogenase (GDH) were higher in P. tinctorius than the other two fungi following NH4 + pre-treatment, glutamine synthetase (GS) activity did not differ significantly between the three fungi. In all three fungi, specific activities for GS were significantly higher than for GDH. NR activity was expressed in all three fungi regardless of the nitrogen source in the medium, but in P. tinctorius diminished following continued exposure to either NO3 , NH4 +, glutamine or NO3 + glutamine. The data are discussed in relation to nitrogen utilisation by the P. grandis mycobiont. Accepted: 16 October 1997  相似文献

Selectivity experiments were carried out during trawling targeting deep-water shrimps Aristaeomorpha foliacea (Risso, 1827) and Aristeus antennatus (Risso, 1816) (Crustacea, Decapoda, Aristeidae) in the North-Western Ionian Sea (Eastern-Central Mediterranean). Different criteria were employed to analyse maturity; however, the proportion at 50% of retained, mated and mature specimens was always used to indicate the size, expressed as Carapace Length (CL, mm), at first capture (CLc), mating (CLsp) and at first maturity (CLm), respectively. In order to estimate the size at 50% maturity (CLm) for females of both species, three criteria were adopted. In particular, CLm was computed for the mature females not considering the presence of spermatophores, for the mature females with spermatophores and for the mature females intersected by the decreasing proportion with size of females without spermatophores. Three diamond stretched mesh codends of 40, 50 and 60 mm were tested using a cover of 20 mm. The 40-mm stretched mesh size (European Union legal size in the Mediterranean) was not selective for the sampled population of each species. The size at first capture (CLc), calculated in both species for the two sexes combined, increased significantly with mesh size. Even for the mesh size of 60 mm, the size at first capture was still smaller than the sizes at 50% maturity, whatever the criterion adopted. Since the differences between the size at first maturity and the sizes at first capture are greater in A. foliacea than A. antennatus, the former species appears in this respect to be more vulnerable to trawling than the latter.  相似文献

Spermatozoa of most crustacean species are nonmotile and are packed into spermatophores. In Decapoda, spermatophores are highly variable in morphology and can be useful in the solving of taxonomic and systematic questions, especially among the Anomura. In this study, the morphology and morphometry of the spermatophores of the western Atlantic hermit crabs Pagurus brevidactylus and P. criniticornis are described. The abdomen of fresh male specimens was dissected to expose the reproductive system and to extract the spermatophores, which were analyzed by stereoscopic, light, and scanning electron microscopy. The vas deferens can be divided macroscopically in three regions, all of them containing spermatophores. Tripartite spermatophores are composed of an elongated cylindrical main ampulla, a triangular accessory ampulla, a narrow cylindrical peduncle, and a round pedestal. Dimensions of the spermatophore components are positively correlated to the size of the crab. Morphological patterns observed in this study resemble those of other pagurid hermit crabs investigated to date. The morphological character distribution confirms classifications based on adult morphology and molecular analysis. J. Morphol. 2011. © 2011 Wiley‐Liss, Inc.  相似文献

The life history of three populations ofProtohermes grandis and two populations ofProtohermes immaculatus (Megaloptera: Corydalidae) was compared. In general, the larvae lived in stream riffles for 2 years and the adults appeared in summer. Adult body size differed between these closely related species and also between the populations ofP. grandis. Dwarfism occurred inP. immaculatus, a species that is endemic to the small, isolated island, Amami Island. The population ofP. grandis on Yaku Island, located between Amami Island and the mainland Kyushu, had an intermediate body size between that ofP. immaculatus and the mainland population ofP. grandis. Despite being an insular population,P. grandis on Tsushima Island had a similar body size to mainlandP. grandis. In these populations with large adults, some larvae lived in the streams for 3 years. The size distribution of benthic animals, which are the prey available toProtohermes larvae, differed between the streams studied. The density of large prey was lowest on Amami Island, intermediate on Yaku Island, and highest on the mainland and Tsushima Island. Different size distributions of available prey may be caused by the differences of benthic fauna; most of Ecdyonuridae and Ephemerellidae (large mayflies) and Perlidae (large stoneflies) were not found on Amami and Yaku Islands. Thus, there is a tendency to dwarfism in the populations ofProtobermes inhabiting streams where the density of large prey is low.  相似文献

The two rhizomatous perennials Solidago canadensis and S. gigantea belong to the most widespread alien plants in Europe. Anecdotal observations suggest that they disperse also by rhizome fragments. For testing their resprouting ability, rhizome fragments of different sizes from both species were buried at four different soil depths (0, 5, 10 and 20 cm, respectively) in a common garden. Rhizome fragments of S. canadensis ranged 3–6 cm in length, those of S. gigantea 5–20 cm in length. Resprouting plants were harvested after 3 months and growth related traits measured to assess their vitality. Resprouting rate in S. gigantea was far higher than in S. canadensis (85 and 19%, respectively). In S. gigantea, fragments of all sizes resprouted from all soil depths whereas none rhizome of S. canadensis emerged from 20 cm burial depth. In S. gigantea, size related traits showed significant interactions between fragment size and burial depth, but not relative shoot growth rate. At all burial depths, vitality of plants emerging from small rhizomes was lower than plants emerging from large rhizomes. Effects of rhizome size became stronger with increasing burial depth. The results show that both species are able to resprout from buried rhizome fragments, and that succesful regeneration is more likely to occur in S. gigantea. Managing these species should avoid any activities promoting rhizome fragmentation and dispersal of fragments.  相似文献

The trophic interactions of the marine rotifer Synchaeta cecilia were investigated by determining its feeding and growth rates on a wide variety of marine phytoplankton and by determining its susceptibility to predation by the calanoid copepod, Acartia tonsa. Reproduction of S. cecilia was sustained in four-day feeding trails by 13 of 37 algal species tested. Growth-supporting species included species of Cryptophyceae, Dinophyceae, Chlorophyceae and Haptophyceae in sizes from 4 to 47 μm. Within these taxa, other species in the acceptable size range failed to support growth. No species of Cyanophyceae, Bacillariophyceae, or Chrysophyceae supported growth of the rotifer. S. cecilia can be maintained on unialgal cultures of Cryptophyceae but growth is enhanced by a combination of two or three species; a mixture of Chroomonas salina (Cryptophyceae), Heterocapsa pygmaea (Dinophyceae), and Isochrysis galbana (Haptophyceae) has sustained laboratory stocks of S. cecilia for over four years. The expected response of S. cecilia to food quantity was observed: as food concentration was increased from 58 to 1154 μg C 1−1, the population growth constant increased from 0.17 to 0.60 d−1 at 20°C. This is equivalent to population doubling times of 4.0 and 1.1 days at H. pygmaea densities of 500 and 104 cells ml−1, respectively. The susceptibility of S. cecilia to predation was investigated by determining its rate of capture by the omnivorous marine copepod Acartia tonsa. At prey densities of 5 to 35 μg C 1−1 (0.3 to 1.9 individuals 1−1), A. tonsa readily ingested S. cecilia at rates up to 3 μg C copepod−1 day−1.  相似文献

Genetic differences among the three species of Sphyraena with two gill rakers from East Asia (S. iburiensis, S. obtusata, and S. pinguis, defined recently as the S. obtusata group), were investigated using 799-bp sequences of the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene. Pairwise sequence differences within each of the three species were 0.0–0.4% (S. iburiensis), 0.0–0.4% (S. obtusata), and 0.0–0.6% (S. pinguis), respectively, pairwise sequence differences among the three species being 18.3–18.6% (S. iburiensis vs. S. obtusata), 14.9–15.4% (S. iburiensis vs. S. pinguis), and 17.6–18.3% (S. obtusata vs. S. pinguis), respectively. The extent of the latter were comparable to those among four other congeneric species, S. africana, S. forsteri, S. helleri, and S. japonica (16.0–24.5%). Phylogenetic analysis using the maximum-likelihood method indicated reciprocal monophyly of the three species, each clade being supported by a bootstrap value of 100%. These findings fully supported the taxonomic status of these species, recently elucidated by detailed morphological comparisons. In addition, the S. obtusata group formed a strongly supported clade against the four other congeneric species.  相似文献

The life histories of Simulium noelleri Fried. and S. truncatum Ldstr. were studied at a lake-outlet site in Finland. A detailed study was made of the second summer generation of both species and this consisted of a single, synchronized cohort in S. noelleri, and overlapped cohorts in S. truncatum. Larvae of the two species also show differences in their habitat preference: those of S. noelleri predominate on the sluice which marks the beginning of the river, and S. truncatum larvae just downstream from the sluice. In winter, the latter site was dominated by immature individuals of two other species, S. erythrocephalum de Geer and S. equinum L., and these were found downstream from the two ‘lake-outlet’ species during the summer. Adult females of S. noelleri are able to mature a first batch of eggs without taking a blood meal but those of S. truncatum need to feed on blood before eggs can be fully developed. The consequences of these different reproductive strategies on the ecology of individuals of the two species is discussed.  相似文献

Hybridisation between South polar skua (C. maccormicki) and Brown skua (C. antarctica lonnbergi) in the area of the Antarctic Peninsula is known at least since the beginning of the last century but no survey has been done so far. This paper reviews information on the species composition of skua colonies of more than 10 pairs in the Antarctic Peninsula region, and the incidence of mixed pairs. Morphometrics, population size and breeding success were examined in detail at King George Island. The northward distribution of South polar skuas extended to King George Island (62°11′ S 59°00′ W), with a small outlying population on Signy Island (60°45′ S 45°36′ W), whereas Brown skuas did not breed further south than Anvers Island archipelago (64°46′ S 64°03′ W). The proportion of mixed pairs was highest at the northern end of the ∼500-km-wide hybrid zone. Body size distribution of sympatric skuas from King George Island is clearly bimodal but overlaps considerably and hybrids cannot be identified. Skua population sizes at Potter Peninsula/King George Island remained stable between 1994 and 2004. Numbers of mixed breeding pairs fluctuated more strongly than those of pure species pairs. Breeding success of Brown skuas varied the least.  相似文献

The composition, abundance and vertical distribution of chaetognaths were analysed along a transect in the Weddell Sea during late spring. Three species were identified: Eukrohnia hamata (90.8%), Sagitta marri (6.4%) and S. gazellae (2.8%). Only juvenile stages were collected in the samples, a result related both to the type of sampling gear employed (mesh size: 100 μm) and the species' life-cycles. The vertical distributions showed that the juvenile stages of these species tended to aggregate at considerable depth (1000–500 m). It is postulated that this pattern may be related to the life-cycles of these species in association with seasonal Antarctic conditions, similar to the pattern postulated for krill and other polar crustaceans. Karyotype study was performed in 13 populations of 11 Silene species (sect. Auriculatae L., Caryophyllaceae) growing in Iran. All the species studied showed 2n = 2x = 24 chromosome number supporting the earlier report on S. meyeri, while the chromosome number of S. palinotricha, S. sojakii, S. gertraudiae, S. elymaitica, S. pseudonurensis, S. dschuparensis, S. eriocalycina, S. araratica, S. prilipkoana and S. commelinifolia are new to science. The chromosomes were mainly metacentric or sub-metacentric and their size varied from 1.10 μm in S. pseudonurensis to 7.11 μm in S. dschuparensis. The species studied differed significantly in the total size of the chromosomes, the size of the short arms and the long arms, indicating the role of quantitative genomic changes in the Silene species diversification. They also differ in their karyotype formulae indicating the occurrence of structural changes in their chromosomes. The Silene species were placed in 1A, 2A, 1B and 2B classes of Stebbins karyotype symmetry showing symmetrical karyotypes. Clustering of the species based on karyotype features grouped the species of S. palinotricha, S. prilipkoana, S. commelinifolia, S. eriocalycina, S. meyeri, S. araratica and S. Sojakii together while the species of S. gertraudiae and S. elymaitica showed more similarity and were placed close to each other.  相似文献
