Epizootic disease caused by the fungal pathogen Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd) is a major driver of amphibian declines, yet many amphibians declined before the pathogen was described. The Relict Leopard Frog, Rana onca (=Lithobates onca), was nearly extinct, with the exception of populations within a few geothermal springs. Growth of Bd, however, is limited by high water temperature, and geothermal springs may have provided refuge during outbreaks of chytridiomycosis. We conducted field surveys and laboratory experiments to assess the susceptibility of R. onca to Bd. In the field, we found Bd at one of the two areas where remnant populations of R. onca still occur, but not in the other. In the laboratory, we infected juvenile frogs from these two areas with two hypervirulent Bd isolates associated with declines in other ranid species. In our experiments, these Bd isolates did not affect survivorship of R. onca and most infections (64%) were cleared by the end of the experiments. We propose that R. onca either has inherent resistance to Bd or has recently evolved such resistance. These results may be important for conservation efforts aimed at establishing new populations of R. onca across a landscape where Bd exists. Resistance, however, varies among life stages, and we also did not assess Bd from the local environment. We caution that the resistance we observed for young frogs under laboratory conditions may not translate to the situation for R. onca in the wild.  相似文献

The current study was to explore the seasonal variation in the zooplankton and aquatic macroinvertebrate population in India’s oldest and largest sewage fed fish ponds of East Kolkata Wetlands and whether they show different trends from the natural ponds. Zooplankton diversity was significantly higher in fish ponds whereas macroinvertebrate diversity was higher in natural ponds. Zooplanktons showed significant seasonal variation in the natural ponds but did not show any variation throughout the year in sewage fed fisheries. Among zooplankton species Brachionus spp., Keratella tropica which are pollution (eutrophy) indicator were found in greater abundance in EKW fisheries than natural ponds. Chironomid larvae which thrive and flourish in highly organically polluted or eutrophicated waters were dominant in EKW. The regular input of sewage provides a certain high level of nutrient to the fisheries which help to maintain greater and consistent population density and diversity of zooplanktons forming a strong base for the food webs in the EKW ponds.  相似文献

The relative abundance of autotrophic (A) and heterotrophic (H) organisms in the microbial food web of temporary ponds and its relationship to environmental variables were analysed. Four localities (43 temporary ponds) were selected for study. They were located in unaltered, protected basins without intensive agriculture or strong human pressure. Because the supply of allochthonous organic matter is expected to be higher than inorganic nutrient inputs in temporary ponds, we hypothesized that the microbial food web in these unaltered basins was dominated by heterotrophic organisms. Our results showed that the log A:H biomass ratio (A/H) was always negative, indicating strong dominance by heterotrophic organisms in these ponds. Moreover, A/H was negatively related to DOC concentrations, but this relationship was weaker in the locality with the highest DOC concentration. No significant relationships were found between A/H and the other environmental variables analysed, namely inorganic nutrients, fulvic acids, chlorophyll-a concentrations, macrophyte biomass or total zooplankton biomass. However, when the different groups of zooplankton were considered separately, A/H correlated negatively with cladoreran biomass and positively with harpacticoid biomass. Thus, temporary ponds differ from deeper ecosystems, in which the greater importance of autochthonous energy inputs leads to microbial food web that is more dominated by autotrophs.  相似文献

Parasite distributions depend on the local environment in which host infection occurs, and the surrounding landscape over which hosts move and transport their parasites. Although host and landscape effects on parasite prevalence and spatial distribution are difficult to observe directly, estimation of such relationships is necessary for understanding the spread of infections and parasite–habitat associations. Although parasite distributions are necessarily nested within host distributions, direct environmental influences on local infection or parasite effects on host dispersal could lead to distinct landscape or habitat relationships relative to their hosts. Our aim was to determine parasite spatial structure across a contiguous prairie by statistical modeling of parasite–landscape relationships combined with analysis of population genetic structure. We sampled northern leopard frogs (Lithobates pipiens) and wood frogs (L. sylvaticus) for host-specific lung nematodes (Rhabdias ranae and R. bakeri; respectively) across the Sheyenne National Grassland in southeastern North Dakota and developed primers for 13 microsatellite loci for Rhabdias. The two Rhabdias species exhibited different correlations with landscape characteristics that conformed with that of their hosts, indicating transmission is driven by host ecology, probably density, and not directly by the environment. There was evidence for localized, patchy spatial genetic structure, but no broader-scale geographic patterns, indicating no barriers to host and parasite dispersal. Nematodes cohabitating in an individual frog were most genetically similar. Worms within the same wetland were also genetically similar, indicating localized transmission and resulting wetland-scale patchiness are not completely obscured by broad-scale host–parasite dispersal. Beyond individual wetlands, we found no evidence of genetic isolation-by-distance or patchiness at the landscape-scale.  相似文献

Individual generalist predators often have more specialized diets than their populations do. Individual specialization (IS) is influenced by ecological opportunity, intraspecific competition, and interspecific competition, although the effects of these parameters are inconsistent across studies. We investigated IS in five species of frogs and toads, Anaxyrus americanus, A. fowleri, Lithobates catesbeianus, L. clamitans, and L. sphenocephalus. We used the natural history and ecology of each species to predict which parameters would influence IS. Our predictions were supported for some species but not others. We predicted IS would be positively influenced by resource diversity in all species, but this prediction held for only three species, with the relationship significant in A. fowleri and L. catesbeianus and marginally significant in A. americanus. We also predicted that interspecific competition would have a negative relationship with IS in L. clamitans because L. catesbeianus is competitively superior to L. clamitans and likely to suppress its foraging options. This prediction was upheld. Finally, we predicted that IS in A. americanus, A. fowleri, and L. clamitans would be influenced by intraspecific competition. However, IS was not influenced by intraspecific competition in any species, a surprising result given that intraspecific competition has traditionally been assumed to be the ecological parameter with the strongest effects on IS. Many previous studies did not simultaneously consider all three ecological parameters, which may have increased the apparent importance of intraspecific competition for IS. Our results revealed that the ecological parameters affected IS differently even across closely related and ecologically similar species, and demonstrated that these differences are sometimes predictable based on natural history. This study also suggests that sympatric ecological speciation based on IS may be rare because the ecological parameters driving IS are inconsistent across species, and the strength of their effects on intraspecific diet variation varies in space.  相似文献

Aquaculture ponds represent ecologically relevant environments to study the community composition and diversity of methanogenic assemblages, as well as their interactions with cultivated species and chemical indicators. In this study, aquaculture ponds with crab (Eriocheir sinensis), oriental river prawn (Macrobrachium nipponense), perch (Micropterus salmonides) and Wuchang fish (Parabramis pekinensis) were sampled, and Illumina high-throughput sequencing was used to investigate the methanogenic communities. The results revealed that the abundant methanogenic orders in surface sediment were Methanomicrobiales, Methanosarcinales and Methanocellales. The relative abundance of Methanocellales was higher in crab and prawn ponds as compared to other ponds. Methanogenic 16S rRNA gene abundance and beta diversity of the community was affected by the cultivated species. Methanogenic communities in aquaculture ponds with higher contents of total nitrogen and organic matter had decreased species richness, while those with higher contents of ammonia and nitrite had an overall decreased abundance of methanogens and their respective diversities. Overall, in addition to the differences in cultivated species, the consequent differences in farming practices including the types and amounts of feeds used, the contents of total nitrogen, organic matter, ammonia and nitrite could all influence the methanogenic community in surface sediment of aquaculture ponds.  相似文献

Habitat permanence and threat of predation are primary drivers of community assembly and composition in lentic freshwater systems. Pond-breeding amphibians select oviposition sites to maximize fitness and minimize risks of predation and desiccation of their offspring, typically facing a trade-off between the two as predation risk often increases as desiccation risk decreases. To experimentally determine if Hyla chrysoscelis partition oviposition along gradients of relative desiccation risk and predation risk, we tested oviposition site preference in a natural population of treefrogs colonizing experimental ponds that varied in water depth and contained predatory larvae of two Ambystoma salamander species. Hyla chrysoscelis selected habitats with both lower predation risk, avoiding A. talpoideum over A. maculatum, and lower desiccation risk, selecting ponds with three times greater depth. We demonstrate that adult oviposition site choices simultaneously minimize relative predation risk and desiccation risk and that closely related salamander species produce functionally different responses among colonizing animals.  相似文献

We report here the prevalence of parasitism by water mites (Arrenurus sp.) and terrestrial mites (Leptus killingtoni) on parthenogenetic Ischnura hastata (Odonata: Coenagrionidae) from the Azores islands. Leptus killingtoni was only found on the island of Pico, and the prevalence of infestation was highly variable among the different ponds studied, ranging from 0 to 41%. Leptus killingtoni was observed on three of the four odonate species from the archipelago: I. hastata, I. pumilio, and Sympetrum fonscolombii, all of them new hosts for this species. Aquatic mites have been found parasitizing I. hastata females on the island of São Miguel. The prevalence of mite parasitism by Arrenurus sp. on I. hastata was very low, ranging from 12% (2003) to 1% (2008), and in most of the studied ponds, no mites were found attached to females. Although I. hastata coexists with a sexual congener species in the Azores (I. pumilio), they are syntopic in only a small fraction of ponds. Therefore, a comparison between I. hastata and I. pumilio was insufficient to test the predictions of the Red Queen Hypothesis, and further research on parasitism rates in both species needs to be done. In any case, the low prevalence of mite parasitism found in the Azores, coupled with the fact that most of the populations in the archipelago are almost free from competitors and predators, could explain the persistence of these I. hastata parthenogenetic populations, despite their low levels of genetic variation.  相似文献

The pathogenic fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd) has been associated with global amphibian declines, but it is often difficult to discern the relative importance of Bd as a causal agent in declines that have already occurred. Retrospective analyses of museum specimens have allowed researchers to associate the timing of Bd arrival with the timing of past amphibian declines. Cascades frogs (Rana cascadae) have experienced dramatic declines in northern California, but it is not clear whether the onset of these declines corresponds to the arrival of Bd. We used quantitative real-time PCR assays of samples collected from museum specimens to determine historical Bd prevalence in the northern California range of Cascades frogs. We detected Bd in 13 of 364 (3.5%) Cascades frog specimens collected between 1907 and 2003, with the first positive result from 1978. A Bayesian analysis suggested that Bd arrived in the region between 1973 and 1978, which corresponds well with the first observations of declines in the 1980s.  相似文献

Knowing how microevolutionary processes, such as genetic drift and natural selection, shape variation in adaptive traits is strategic for conservation measures. One way to estimate local adaptation is to compare divergences in quantitative traits (QST) and neutral loci (FST). Therefore, we have assessed the pattern of phenotypic and molecular genetic divergence among natural subpopulations of the fruit tree Eugenia dysenterica DC. A provenance and progeny test was performed to assess the quantitative traits of the subpopulations collected in a wide distribution area of the species in the Brazilian Cerrado. The sampled environments are in a biodiversity hotspot with heterogeneous soil and climate conditions. By associating quantitative trait variation in initial seedling development with neutral microsatellite marker variation, we tested the local adaptation of the traits by the QSTFST contrast. Genetic drift was prevalent in the phenotypic differentiation among the subpopulations, although the traits seedling emergence time and root green mass, which are relevant for adaptation to the Cerrado climate, showed signs of uniform selection. Our results suggest that E. dysenterica has a spatial genetic structure divided into two large groups, separated by a line that divides the Cerrado biome in a southwestern to northeastern direction. This structure must be taken into account for managing E. dysenterica genetic resources both for conservation and breeding purposes.  相似文献

The rapid pace of environmental change is driving multi-faceted shifts in abiotic factors that influence parasite transmission. However, cumulative effects of these factors on wildlife diseases remain poorly understood. Here we used an information-theoretic approach to compare the relative influence of abiotic factors (temperature, diurnal temperature range, nutrients and pond-drying), on infection of snail and amphibian hosts by two trematode parasites (Ribeiroia ondatrae and Echinostoma spp.). A temperature shift from 20 to 25 °C was associated with an increase in infected snail prevalence of 10–20%, while overall snail densities declined by a factor of 6. Trematode infection abundance in frogs was best predicted by infected snail density, while Ribeiroia infection specifically also declined by half for each 10% reduction in pond perimeter, despite no effect of perimeter on the per snail release rate of cercariae. Both nutrient concentrations and Ribeiroia infection positively predicted amphibian deformities, potentially owing to reduced host tolerance or increased parasite virulence in more productive environments. For both parasites, temperature, pond-drying, and nutrients were influential at different points in the transmission cycle, highlighting the importance of detailed seasonal field studies that capture the importance of multiple drivers of infection dynamics and the mechanisms through which they operate.  相似文献

Diel vertical migration (DVM) of zooplankton is considered less prominent at high latitudes where diel changes in irradiance are minimal during periods of midnight sun and polar night, leaving zooplankton without a temporal refuge and thus eliminating a key advantage of DVM. One of the shortcomings of previous DVM studies of zooplankton based on net sampling is that the depth resolution often has been too coarse to detect vertical migrations over short distances. We investigated DVM of zooplankton during August 2010 in drifting sea ice northeast of Svalbard (~81.5°N, ~30.5°E). Classical DVM behaviour (midnight rising, midday sinking) was observed between 20 and 80 m in young copepodite stages (CI–III) of Calanus finmarchicus and Calanus glacialis. The copepods Microcalanus spp., Pseudocalanus spp., Oithona atlantica, Oithona similis and Triconia borealis, alongside Eukrohnia hamata, Limacina helicina, and Fritillaria spp., all displayed signs of DVM. We conclude that zooplankton exhibit DVM in ice-covered waters over rather short distances to optimise food intake in the presence of predators.  相似文献

The resting stages of freshwater zooplankton constitute a special mechanism for passive dispersal, often displaying a variety of adaptations so as to ease transport. In floodplain systems, macrophytes are one of the most representative biotic groups showing interactions with the zooplankton community. The annual fluctuations in the hydrometric level of the Paraná River favour the displacement of this aquatic vegetation in floodplain environments. This paper hypothesizes that the roots and submerged portions of different macrophytes contain zooplankton resting stages which are able to hatch when environmental conditions are favourable. In turn, this contributes to the dispersal of zooplankton by plants when they are displaced by the flood pulse. Six macrophyte species were sampled (Eichhornia crassipes, Azolla filiculoides, Limnobium spongia, Pistia stratiotes, Eichhornia azurea and Nymphoides indica) from lakes within the Paraná River floodplain. Roots and submerged portions of vegetation were stored (90 days) at 4 °C then incubated at 25 °C for 90 days. Hatchling emergence was recorded at 2-day intervals during this period. In total, 70 zooplankton taxa were recorded in all macrophyte samples; rotifers were the most representative group (69%) followed by cladocerans (28%) and copepods (3%). The roots and submerged parts of aquatic vegetation house viable zooplankton resting stages. This phenomenon allows the dispersal of resting stages and therefore colonization of new habitats during the displacement of macrophyte species.  相似文献

Haslea ostrearia is a marine diatom known to produce marennine, a water-soluble blue-green pigment responsible for the greening of oysters in ponds along the French Atlantic coast. This phenomenon occurs seasonally when H. ostrearia blooms in oyster ponds, and it increases the economic value of cultured oysters. From an ecological perspective, H. ostrearia blooms are accompanied by a decrease in the abundance of other microalgae, suggesting that this diatom produces allelochemicals. Recent studies showed that purified marennine has other biological activities, for instance antioxidant, antibacterial, and antiviral activities, which could be used in aquaculture to promote this pigment as a natural antipathogen agent. One important issue regarding the possible use of H. ostrearia in aquaculture as a mixed algal diet, however, is the importance of marennine allelopathy. In this study, we investigated the allelopathic effect of H. ostrearia on the growth of five microalgal species relevant to aquaculture: Chaetoceros calcitrans, Skeletonema costatum, Phaeodactylum tricornutum, Tetraselmis suecica, and Tisochrysis lutea. Allelopathic tests were realized by co-culturing these microalgae with H. ostrearia in batch and in semi-continuous mode, based on initial biovolume ratios. Our findings showed that inhibition of the growth of microalgae due to the presence of H. ostrearia and marennine was species dependent. Skeletonema costatum, C. calcitrans, and T. lutea were significantly more sensitive, whereas T. suecica and P. tricornutum appeared to be more resistant. Growth irradiance significantly influenced the allelopathic effect against the sensitive species S. costatum, and the H. ostrearia production of marennine increases with irradiance. Data presented in this study partly support the hypothesis that marennine released into the culture medium possibly acts as an allelochemical compound, thus explaining the dominance of H. ostrearia and the loss of sensitive algae in oyster ponds, but also that some species are insensitive, which allows co-culturing and use in a mixed algal diet in aquaculture.  相似文献

Ontogenetic changes in disease susceptibility have been demonstrated in many vertebrate taxa, as immature immune systems and limited prior exposure to pathogens can place less developed juveniles at a greater disease risk. By causing the disease chytridiomycosis, Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd) infection has led to the decline of many amphibian species. Despite increasing knowledge on how Bd varies in its effects among species, little is known on the interaction between susceptibility and development within host species. We compared the ontogenetic susceptibility of post-metamorphic green and golden bell frogs Litoria aurea to chytridiomycosis by simultaneously measuring three host-pathogen responses as indicators of the development of the fungus—infection load, survival rate, and host immunocompetence—following Bd exposure in three life stages (recently metamorphosed juveniles, subadults, adults) over 95 days. Frogs exposed to Bd as recently metamorphosed juveniles acquired higher infection loads and experienced lower immune function and lower survivorship than subadults and adults, indicating an ontogenetic decline in chytridiomycosis susceptibility. By corresponding with an intrinsic developmental maturation in immunocompetence seen in uninfected frogs, we suggest these developmental changes in host susceptibility in L. aurea may be immune mediated. Consequently, the physiological relationship between ontogeny and immunity may affect host population structure and demography through variation in life stage survival, and understanding this can shape management targets for effective amphibian conservation.  相似文献

The experiments were performed in microcosms situated on a control site and on a site regulated by beavers. Two cladoceran species of different sizes were placed in microcosms in different proportions. It was found that the vital activity products of Castor fiber L. promote an increase in the concentration of total phosphorus (P), a decrease in the N/P ratio in water, and an increase in the chlorophyll a concentration and the abundance and biomass of bacterioplankton. In such conditions, the abundance and biomass of the large species Daphnia (Ctenodaphnia) magna Straus was increased to the greatest extent when compared with background values when it was placed in combination with Ceriodaphnia dubia Richard or without it. Moreover, in the case of the combination of two crustacean species in microcosms, the abundance of C. dubia was lower when compared with the control site, while the abundance of D. magna was higher. The results of a bioassay showed that the productivity of C. dubia decreases in waters where D. magna is most abundant. We concluded that the formation of zooplankton in beaver ponds with specific features determined by the presence of large cladoceran species is provided by changes in the quantitative and qualitative parameters of food resources. This contributes to the massive distribution of large D. magna and its competitive relations with small C. dubia. According to the results of a bioassay, the vital activity products of D. magna can inhibit the fecundity of C. dubia.  相似文献

The occurrence of emerging infectious diseases in wildlife populations is increasing, and changes in environmental conditions have been hypothesized as a potential driver. For example, warmer ambient temperatures might favor pathogens by providing more ideal conditions for propagation or by stressing hosts. Our objective was to determine if water temperature played a role in the pathogenicity of an emerging pathogen (ranavirus) that infects ectothermic vertebrate species. We exposed larvae of four amphibian species to a Frog Virus 3 (FV3)-like ranavirus at two temperatures (10 and 25°C). We found that FV3 copies in tissues and mortality due to ranaviral disease were greater at 25°C than at 10°C for all species. In a second experiment with wood frogs (Lithobates sylvaticus), we found that a 2°C change (10 vs. 12°C) affected ranaviral disease outcomes, with greater infection and mortality at 12°C. There was evidence that 10°C stressed Cope’s gray tree frog (Hyla chrysoscelis) larvae, which is a species that breeds during summer—all individuals died at this temperature, but only 10% tested positive for FV3 infection. The greater pathogenicity of FV3 at 25°C might be related to faster viral replication, which in vitro studies have reported previously. Colder temperatures also may decrease systemic infection by reducing blood circulation and the proportion of phagocytes, which are known to disseminate FV3 through the body. Collectively, our results indicate that water temperature during larval development may play a role in the emergence of ranaviruses.  相似文献

Experiments in microcosms have demonstrated that beaver vital activity products (BVAPs) promote an increase in concentrations of total nitrogen (N) and total phosphorus (P), a decrease in the N/P value in water, and an increase in the abundance and biomass of bacterioplankton. Under such conditions, the abundance and biomass of small Ceriodaphnia dubia Richard and large Daphnia (Ctenodaphnia) magna Straus, which live separately, increase. The coexistence of these cladocerans in microcosms under the BVAP influences results in a high increase in the abundance and biomass of D. magna; in similar experiments without the influence of BVAP, Ceriodaphnia dubia becomes more abundant. The results of bioassay demonstrate that the number of newborns of Ceriodaphnia dubia decreases in water where Daphnia magna is numerous owing to BVAPs. It is suggested that the vital activity products of large representatives of the genus Daphnia inhibit the fecundity of small species of Cladocera. This fact, along with the high competitiveness of large cladoceran species under conditions of a high level of nutritive base, determine the formation of zooplankton communities in beaver ponds which are characterized by a high abundance and biomass and low uniformity  相似文献

The diatom assemblages of the surface sediments have been studied in 53 urban ponds and lakes of St. Petersburg for the first time. In total, 350 species and infraspecific taxa have been registered; the species of Achnanthidium, Cocconeis, Cyclostephanos, Cyclotella, Gomphonema, Lemnicola, Navicula, Nitzschia, and Stephanodiscus genera were the most common. The wide distribution of small centric planktonic taxa, Cyclostephanos dubius, C. invisitatus, Cyclotella pseudostelligera, Stephanodiscus hantzschii, and S. minutulus, is preconditioned by the depletion of dissolved silica, which is a result of the high phosphorus load. The high abundance of macrophytes in the shallowest sites favors the dominance of epiphytic Fragilaria, Staurosira, and Staurosirella taxa. Bottom-living diatoms in the shallow eutrophic and hypereutrophic urban ponds are light-limited; this is a result of either macrophytes or phytoplankton development. Alkaliphilous and alkalibiontic species prevail among the pH-indicative species, while eutraphentic and hypereutraphentic diatoms, as well as those thriving in a wide range of trophic conditions, dominate over other trophic groups. The β- and α-mesosaprobic species are the most common saprobity-indicative taxa.  相似文献

Bythotrephes longimanus, an invasive zooplankter from Eurasia, has caused severe declines in native zooplankton communities in Rainy and Kabetogama lakes in northern Minnesota. Both lakes have experienced a 40–60% decrease in peak summer zooplankton biomass following B. longimanus establishment around 2006–2007. In these lakes, yellow perch (Perca flavescens) are a key fishery species, and young-of-the-year (YOY) yellow perch are mainly planktivorous during their first summer. This led to concern that their growth could be detrimentally affected by the depletion of zooplankton forage. We used seining data to compare growth rates of YOY yellow perch before (2001–2005) and after (2008–2012) B. longimanus establishment in Rainy and Kabetogama lakes. Nearby Lake Vermilion, assumed to have been unaffected by B. longimanus during this time period, was used as a reference for natural variation in YOY growth in the region. YOY yellow perch length was modeled as a linear function of cumulative growing degree days (GDD) throughout the summer, and the slope of the relationship was compared between pre- and post-B. longimanus time periods for the three study lakes. The two lakes with B. longimanus showed similar decreases in YOY yellow perch growth rate relative to GDD, whereas Lake Vermilion showed no evidence of a decline in growth rates during this period. The reduction in growth rates resulted in an approximate 10% decrease in mean length of YOY yellow perch at the end of the summer after B. longimanus establishment, which could lead to further effects of this invasive zooplankter at higher trophic levels.  相似文献
