The three-dimensional (3-D) arrangement of vessels and the vessel-to-vessel connections in the secondary xylem of the stem of the ring-porous hardwood tree Fraxinus lanuginosa were studied in series of thick transverse sections with epifluorescence microscope and confocal laser scanning microscope. Vessels were traced in sequential sections, and vessel networks were reconstructed in two segments of wood with dimensions of 2 × 1.4 × 21.2 mm(3) and 2 × 1.4 × 5.8 mm(3) (tangential × radial × axial). The arrangement of vessels and intervessel pits were visualized by scanning electron microscopy in low-density polyethylene microcasts and on exposed tangential faces of growth-ring boundaries. The vessels deviated from the stem axis in the tangential direction and, to a lesser extent, in the radial direction. Some neighboring vessels were twisted around each other. Vessels that appeared solitary in single sections were found to be sequentially contiguous with a number of other vessels, forming networks that extended in the tangential direction and across growth-ring boundaries. In the 21.2-mm wood block, all earlywood vessels at the growth-ring boundary made contact with latewood vessels in the previous tree ring. Within a growth ring however, only a single contact was observed between individual earlywood and latewood vessels. Densely arranged intervessel pits were characteristic in the regions where adjacent vessels made contact with each other. Such bordered pits were abundant in the tangential walls of vessel elements adjacent to growth-ring boundaries. Therefore, bordered pits appear to provide the pathway for the radial transport of water via the vessel network across growth-ring borders. Fiber-tracheids, observed as terminal cells in the tree rings, might also contribute to the apoplastic transfer of water across ring borders.  相似文献

The structures of secondary xylem of 6 species of Caragana, which grow in desert regions of Northwest of China, are described in details. The main quantitative characters are compared with species. And a key to the identification of wood structures of 6 species is given. The main similarities of secondary xylem of these 6 species are as follows: vessels per mm2 very numerous, percentage of multiple vessels high; vessel elements very short, perforations simple and in almost horizontal end walls; intervessel bordered pits alternate and vestured, and vessels with spiral thickenings. Libriform fibres are very short, and usually with thick end walls, and with simple pits. Rays are heigh to very low, and with multiseriate and uniseriate, and with heterogeneous type Ⅰ and Ⅱ. In addition, there are differences in other characters, e.g. vessel distribution, amount of axial parenchyma and distribution, ray frequency, crystals present or absent, and crystal distribution, if present. These differences can be used as the anatomical characters to identify the wood structures of the 6 species. In this article we also discuss the relation between the structure of xylem elements and the environmental influences.  相似文献

Austrovideira dettmannaegen. & sp. nov. from the early Oligocene Capella Flora in central Queensland is the first fossil Vitaceae wood described from the Southern Hemisphere. A new combination, Stafylioxylon ramunculiformis (Poole & Wilkinson) Pace & Rozefelds for a Northern Hemisphere fossil wood is also proposed. Austrovideira and Stafylioxylon share with Vitaceoxylon secondary xylem with two diameter classes of vessels, wide vessels usually solitary, narrow vessels forming radial chains, very wide and tall rays, scanty paratracheal parenchyma and septate fibres. Austrovideira differs from Vitaceoxylon in having scalariform intervessel pits and homocellular rays composed exclusively of procumbent cells. This combination of features is seen in the Ampelocissus‐Vitis clade, and a clearly stratified phloem with fibre bands alternating with all other axial elements and phloem rays rapidly dilating towards the periderm is restricted to Parthenocissus and Vitis. Stafylioxylon shares with Austrovideira the presence of scalariform intervessel pits but it differs from that genus in both ray composition and bark anatomy, as it lacks a stratified phloem. These fossil wood genera demonstrate that the lianescent habit in the Vitaceae was established by the Eocene in the Northern Hemisphere and by the Oligocene in the Southern Hemisphere. The pollen and seed fossil record shows that the Vitaceae were in Australia by the Eocene and fossil seeds suggest that the family had radiated by this time. The Oligocene Capella flora with two seed taxa and fossil wood (Austrovideira) provides further evidence of an Australian radiation. The fossil evidence, suggests a significant Gondwanic history for the family.  相似文献

A kind of silicified fossil wood with mixed pits on the radial tracheid wall is described. The fossil wood was collected from the top of Taiyuan Formation (early Early Permian) in Wuda Mining District, Nei Mongol. Compared with the Paleozoic fossil woods in the world, it is put into Araucarioxylon Kraus and named as A. laoshidanense sp. nov. Based on the character of possessing mixed pittings (alternate and opposite pittings) on the radial tracheid wall, the fossil wood is believed to be one of the unknown primitive conifers.Diagnosis of the new species: Only secondary xylem preserved and consisting of axial tracheids and rays. Growth ring boundary, resin duct and axial parenchyma absent. One to Four (commonly 2or3) seriates of bordered pits mostly alternate but sometimes opposite)on the radial tracheid wall. One to Four (commonly1, rarely2 to 4) Cupressoid pits in each cross-field. Rays usually uniseriate, sometimes partly-biseriate and 2 to 39 (mainly3-5) cells high.  相似文献

A vesselless fossil wood was discovered in the Miocene Yanagida Formation in the Noto Peninsula, central Japan. This fossil has distinct growth rings with gradual transition from the early- to the latewood ; tracheids, which are called 'usual traeheids' here, constitute the ground mass of the wood and have typical scalariform bordered pits on radial walls in the earlywood and circular sparse pits on those in the latewood ; rays are 1\2-4 cells wide and heterogeneous with low to high uniseriate wings; axial parenchyma strands are scattered in the latewood. This wood has a peculiar feature; sporadic radial files of broad tracheids whose tangential walls have crowded alternate bordered pits. The radial walls have crowded half-bordered pits to ray cells, but no pits to the usual tracheids. Among all of the extant and extinct angiosperms and gymnosperms, these unusual tracheids occur only in Tetracentron. From these features, we refer the fossil to the extant genus Tetracentron, and name it T. japonoxylum. A revision of homoxylic woods is made for comparision with the present fossil. Tetracentron japonoxylum is the only fossil wood of Tetracentron.  相似文献

Wood samples of stems, lignotubers, and roots of the majority of species of Penaeaceae were analyzed with respect to qualitative and quantitative features. Virtually no data have hitherto been presented on xylem features of this family, restricted to Cape Province, South Africa. Presence of vestured pits in vessels, septate crystalliferous parenchyma in wood, intraxylary phloem, predominantly erect ray cells in the typically narrow, multiseriate rays and in the uniseriate rays, and amorphous deposits in ray cells place Penaeaceae securely in Myrtales and help to define that order. By comparison of ecological preferences of the species, as observed during field work, with quantitative analysis of conductive tissue, close correspondence of the wood structure to habit and habitat is demonstrated.  相似文献

The relation between xylem vessel age and vulnerability to cavitation of sugar maple (Acer saccharum Marsh.) was quantified by measuring the pressure required to force air across bordered pit membranes separating individual xylem vessels. We found that the bordered pit membranes of vessels located in current year xylem could withstand greater applied gas pressures (3.8 MPa) compared with bordered pit membranes in vessels located in older annular rings (2.0 MPa). A longitudinal transect along 6-year-old branches indicated that the pressure required to push gas across bordered pit membranes of current year xylem did not vary with distance from the growing tip. To understand the contribution of age-related changes in vulnerability to the overall resistance to cavitation, we combined data on the pressure thresholds of individual xylem vessels with measurements of the relative flow rate through each annual ring. The annual ring of the current year contributed only 16% of the total flow measured on 10-cm-long segments cut from 6-year-old branches, but it contributed more than 70% of the total flow when measured through 6-year-old branches to the point of leaf attachment. The vulnerability curve calculated using relative flow rates measured on branch segments were similar to vulnerability curves measured on 6-year-old branches (pressure that reduces hydraulic conductance by 50% = 1.6-2.4 MPa), whereas the vulnerability curve calculated using relative flow rates measured on 6-year-old branches were similar to ones measured on the extension growth of the current year (pressure that reduces hydraulic conductance by 50% = 3.8 MPa). These data suggest that, in sugar maple, the xylem of the current year can withstand larger xylem tensions than older wood and dominates water delivery to leaves.  相似文献

Background and Aims

Although the lateral movement of water and gas in tree stems is an important issue for understanding tree physiology, as well as for the development of wood preservation technologies, little is known about the vascular pathways for radial flow. The aim of the current study was to understand the occurrence and the structure of anatomical features of sugi (Cryptomeria japonica) wood including the tracheid networks, and area fractions of intertracheary pits, tangential walls of ray cells and radial intercellular spaces that may be related to the radial permeability (conductivity) of the xylem.

Methods

Wood structure was investigated by light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy of traditional wood anatomical preparations and by a new method of exposed tangential faces of growth-ring boundaries.

Key Results

Radial wall pitting and radial grain in earlywood and tangential wall pitting in latewood provide a direct connection between subsequent tangential layers of tracheids. Bordered pit pairs occur frequently between earlywood and latewood tracheids on both sides of a growth-ring boundary. In the tangential face of the xylem at the interface with the cambium, the area fraction of intertracheary pit membranes is similar to that of rays (2·8 % and 2·9 %, respectively). The intercellular spaces of rays are continuous across growth-ring boundaries. In the samples, the mean cross-sectional area of individual radial intercellular spaces was 1·2 µm2 and their total volume was 0·06 % of that of the xylem and 2·07 % of the volume of rays.

Conclusions

A tracheid network can provide lateral apoplastic transport of substances in the secondary xylem of sugi. The intertracheid pits in growth-ring boundaries can be considered an important pathway, distinct from that of the rays, for transport of water across growth rings and from xylem to cambium.Key words: Cryptomeria japonica, bordered pit, intercellular spaces, lateral transport, tracheid network, water conduction, xylem permeability  相似文献

Fossil wood of the Winteraceae from the Upper Cretaceous sedimentsof James Ross Island, Antarctic Peninsula, is described herefor the first time. The specimen is characterized by the absenceof vessels, rays of two distinct sizes and tracheids with one–threerows of circular bordered pits, mainly on the radial walls, grading to horizontally elongate and scalariform. Despite anatomicalconformity to the family Winteraceae, the fossil wood is notidentical to any one extant genus and therefore has been assignedto the fossil organ genus Winteroxylon Gottwald with which thefossil shows greatest similarity. The immunolocalisation of unconventional myosin VIII ('myosin') in the cells of the secondary vascular tissues of angiosperm (Populus tremula L. x P. tremuloides Michx. and Aesculus hippocastanum L.) and gymnosperm (Pinus pinea L.) trees is described for the first time and related to other cytoskeletal elements, as well as to callose. Both myosin and callose are located at the cell plate in dividing cambial cells, whereas actin microfilaments are found alongside the cell plate; actin and tubulin are both associated with the phragmoplast. Myosin and callose also localise to the plasmodesmata-rich pit fields in the walls of living cells, which are particularly abundant within the common walls between ray cells and between ray cells and axial parenchyma cells in the phloem and xylem. In those xylem ray cells that contact developing vessel elements and tracheids, myosin, tubulin, actin and callose are localised at the periphery of developing contact and cross-field pits; the respective antibodies also highlight the bordered pits between vessels and between tracheids. The aperture of the bordered pits, whose diameter diminishes as the over-arching border of these pits develops, also houses myosin, actin and tubulin. Myosin, actin and callose are also found together around the sieve pores of sieve elements and sieve cells. We suggest that an acto-myosin contractile system (a 'plant muscle') is present at the cell plate, the sieve pores, the plasmodesmata within the walls of long-lived parenchyma cells, and at the apertures of bordered pits during their development.  相似文献

Scanning electron microscopy has been used to examine the surface architecture, before and after various chemical treatments, of the pits in the walls of vessels, vasicentric and fibre tracheids, and parenchyma cells, which together make up the wood of Eucalyptus regnans. The treatments included water at 150°C under pressure, hydrofluoric acid, delignifying agents and potassium permanganate. All bordered pits were vestured; half-bordered pits were vestured, partially vestured or non-vestured. No distinction could be made between warts and vestures on morphological or chemical grounds. An hypothesis is advanced which relates vesture formation to prolongation of the activity of the protoplast in pits as the cells die. Vestures, on the basis of this hypothesis, could be regarded as enlarged or conglomerate warts.  相似文献

Silicified stems with typical cycadalean anatomy are described from specimens collected from the Fremouw Formation (Triassic) in the Transantarctic Mountains of Antarctica. Axes are slender with a large parenchymatous pith and cortex separated by a narrow ring of vascular tissue. Mucilage canals are present in both pith and cortex. Vascular tissue consists of endarch primary xylem, a narrow band of secondary xylem tracheids, cambial zone, and region of secondary phloem. Vascular bundles contain uni- to triseriate rays with larger rays up to 2 mm wide separating the individual bundles. Pitting on primary xylem elements ranges from helical to scalariform; secondary xylem tracheids exhibit alternate circular bordered pits. Traces, often accompanied by a mucilage canal, extend out through the large rays into the cortex where some assume a girdling configuration. A zone of periderm is present at the periphery of the stem. Large and small roots are attached to the stem and are conspicuous in the surrounding matrix. The anatomy of the Antarctic cycad is compared with that of other fossil and extant cycadalean stems.  相似文献

This study reports the oldest fossil record of the genus Adina, A. vastanenesis n. sp., from the early Eocene of Vastan lignite mine (Cambay Shale Formation), Surat district, Gujarat. This fossil wood is characterized by diffuse porous wood, predominantly solitary tylosed vessels, simple perforations, scanty paratracheal to diffuse to sometimes diffuse in aggregate axial parenchyma, predominantly uniseriate to occasionally biseriate rays, and non septate fibres with bordered pits and shows its best resemblance with the modern species, Adina multifolia Haviland, belonging to the tribe Naucleeae (subfamily Cinchonoideae) of the family Rubiaceae. The present discovery becomes the first fossil record of the wood of Adina, which provides an insight about the Gondwanan origin either for the genus Adina or the tribe Naucleeae and its further dispersal to Southeast Asia.  相似文献

Freezing in Conifer Xylem: II. PIT ASPIRATION AND BUBBLE FORMATION   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
A scanning electron microscope equipped with a freezing stagewas used to examine the effects of slow freezing on pit aspirationand bubble formation in living tree stems. The size (approximately 2.0 µm diameter) and the sphericalor ellipsoidal shape of the bubbles found in the centre of frozenlumens indicated freezing rates greater than 25 µm s–1.Both unaspirated and aspirated bordered pits were found in thefrozen xylem. The technique used did not reveal enough pitsto determine whether unaspirated pits were more prevalent thanaspirated pits. These results are compared with hypotheses and results fromprevious work on freezing in conifer xylem. Key words: Freezing, conifer xylem, bordered pits, bubbles  相似文献
