The susceptibility of early instars of diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella (L.), and early (first and second) and late instars (third and fourth) of cabbage looper, Trichoplusia ni (Hübner), from Minnesota and south Texas, to indoxacarb and lambda-cyhalothrin was determined in the laboratory. Susceptibilities of the two species from the two geographical locations to indoxacarb and lambda-cyhalothrin varied greatly. P. xylostella from Minnesota was as susceptible to indoxacarb as those from south Texas, whereas both early and late instar T. ni from south Texas were significantly more tolerant to indoxacarb than those from Minnesota. The LC50 values of indoxacarb for early and later instar T. ni at 48 h from south Texas were 4.3- and 34.0-fold greater than those from Minnesota, respectively. Similarly, early instar P. xylostella and late instar T. ni from south Texas were significantly less susceptible to lambda-cyhalothrin than those from Minnesota. Percentage mortality of the two insect species caused by the two insecticides varied with time of exposure and generally exhibited similar patterns of responses to different concentrations for each insecticide.  相似文献

The structure of contact chemoreceptors in the cibariopharyngeal pump of the moth Trichoplusia ni (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) is described. Two types of receptors designated A and B are located on the floor of the pump. Two groups of 9-12 A receptors are located in the anterior part of the pump, and two groups of two B receptors are in the posterior part of the pump. Five sensory dendrites extend to the tip of each A receptor and four to each B receptors. Available evidence indicates that these receptors are contact chemoreceptors and do not serve as mechanoreceptors. The receptors are compared to those of other insects.  相似文献

Ten essential oils were tested against the cabbage looper, Trichoplusia ni larvae for contact, residual and fumigant toxicities and feeding deterrent effects. Against third instar T. ni, Syzygium aromaticum (LD50 = 47.8 μg/larva), Thymus vulgaris (LD50 = 52.0 μg/larva) (the two positive controls) and Cinnamomum glanduliferum (LD50 = 76.0 μg/larva) were the most toxic via topical application. Litsea pungens (LD50 = 87.1 μg/larva), Ilex purpurea (LD50 = 94.0 μg/larva), Cinnamomum cassia (LD50 = 101.5 μg/larva) and Litsea cubeba (LD50 = 112.4 μg/larva) oils were equitoxic. Thymus vulgaris (LC50 = 4.8 mg/ml) and S. aromaticum (LC50 = 6.0 mg/ml) oils were the most toxic in residual bioassays. Cymbopogon citratus (LC50 = 7.7 mg/ml) and C. cassia (LC50 = 8.5 mg/ml) oils were equitoxic followed by Cymbopogon nardus (LC50 = 10.1 mg/ml) in this bioassay. The remaining five oils showed little or no residual effects. In a fumigation bioassay, L. cubeba (LC50 = 16.5 μl/l) and I. purpurea (LC50 = 22.2 μl/l) oils were the most toxic. Cinnamomum glanduliferum (LC50 = 29.7 μl/l) and Sabina vulgaris (LC50 = 31.2 μl/l) oils were equitoxic. Interestingly, S. aromaticum did not exhibit any fumigant toxicity. Cymbopogon citratus, C. nardus and C. cassia strongly deterred feeding by third instar T. ni (DC50s = 26.9, 33.8 and 39.6 μg/cm2, respectively) in a leaf disc choice bioassay. The different responses of T. ni larvae to the oils in different bioassays suggest that these essential oils exhibit different modes of action. Based on their comparable efficacy with essential oils already used as active ingredients in many commercial insecticides (i.e. clove oil and thyme oil), some of these essential oils may have potential as botanical insecticides against T. ni.  相似文献

Mated female cabbage looper months that were caged with cotton, celery, or soybean foliage were attracted significantly more often than inexperienced moths to the odor of the same species of plant the following night. Moths that were caged with cotton or celery foliage were attracted significantly more often the following night only to the foliage of the same species, and not to the foliage of the other plant species. Brief contact by a moth or a single oviposition on plant foliage was sufficient to increase subsequent attraction to plant foliage. Insecticides can affect the complex coordination of activities associated with reproduction through their sublethal impact on the nervous system. Our objective was to document the effects of a sublethal dose (1% mortality) of chlordimeform on reproductive events in the female cabbage looper moth, Trichoplusia ni. A significantly higher percentage of females treated with chlordimeform initiated calling at some time during the scotophase. Chlordimeform stimulated pheromone emission early in the scotophase. However, late in the scotophase pheromone emission was significantly lower in chlordimeform-treated females when compared with control females. Overall, a lower amount of pheromone was detected in glands of chlordimeform-treated females. This effect was significant only during the second half of the scotophase. We suggest that chlordimeform stimulates pheromone transport to the gland surface and calling behavior resulting in depletion of pheromone reserves over the course of the scotophase. Chlordimeform also decreased the mating success of males. Oviposition and egg hatch were also affected by chlordimeform. Mated females treated with chlordimeform laid significantly fewer eggs than acetone-treated females. In addition, hatchability of eggs laid by mated female T. ni treated with chlordimeform was significantly lower than for eggs laid by control females.  相似文献

Soybean looper, Chrysodeixis includens (Walker), is one of the most destructive pests of soybean in the southern U.S. Soybean looper defoliation exceeding 20% from R3 (pod initiation) to R5 (pod fill) can result in significant yield loss. In addition, soybean looper is highly resistant to many insecticides. An alternative to insecticide control is induced host plant resistance. In this study, a total of four experiments over 2 years were conducted in which three different elicitors of SAR (systemic acquired resistance), Actigard 50WG (acibenzolar-S-methyl), Regalia (extract of Reynoutria sachalinensis), and methyl jasmonate (MeJA), were applied to soybean at different plant stages to determine if these chemicals could induce plant resistance and lower soybean looper fitness. None of the elicitors of SAR significantly affected soybean looper mortality. However, Actigard 50WG, MeJA, and Regalia had adverse effects on developmental time, defoliation, and pupal weight of soybean looper. Induced effects by Regalia on soybean looper were very limited compared to Actigard 50WG and MeJA. A single application of MeJA reduced pupal weight by 6.8% and delayed larval development by 14.3%. Soybean seed production was not affected by application of elicitors. In conclusion, the results suggest that exogenous elicitors applied in the field can trigger plant resistance against herbivores and this low level of host plant resistance may effectively lessen pest pressure by favoring natural enemy population regulation without reducing seed production.  相似文献

Bioassays (at generation G1) with a newly collected field population of Spodoptera litura (F.) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) from Multan, Pakistan, showed resistance ratios of 15, 23, 37, and 16 for indoxacarb, spinosad, abamectin, and emamectin, respectively, compared with a laboratory susceptible population, Lab-PK. At G1, the field population was selected with indoxacarb by using single pair crosses. For Indoxa-SEL, bioassay at G4 found that selection increased resistance ratio to 95 for indoxacarb compared with Lab-PK. Selection with indoxacarb significantly increased resistance to spinosad and emamectin; however, resistance to abamectin was observed to drop. A significant reduction in the resistance to indoxacarb was observed in Indoxa-SEL at G9, indicating unstable resistance to indoxacarb; however, it was stable for fipronil. Synergism tests with microsomal oxidase and esterase-specific inhibitors suggested that the indoxacarb resistance was associated with microsomal oxidase. Reciprocal genetic crosses between Indoxa-SEL and Lab-PK populations indicated that resistance was autosomal and incompletely dominant. Tests of monogenic inheritance suggested that resistance to indoxacarb was controlled by more than one locus.  相似文献

The seven age-classes of Trichoplusia ni (Hübner) larvae evaluated in this study as hosts of Campoletis sonorensis indicates that early 2nd larval instar (3–5 day-old larvae) of T. ni represents the most suitable host stage for the development of the larval endoparasitoid C. sonorensis. The higher suitability of early 2nd larval instar of T. ni resulted in more parasitised larvae, a higher rate of successful parasitoid emergence, a higher rate of female progeny, and a lower rate of immature parasitoid mortality. The fitness gain of C. sonorensis on late 1st larval instar (2 day-old larvae) and late 2nd larval instar –early 3rd instars (6–8 day-old larvae) stages of T. ni is negatively affected by the trade-offs between the different physiological and behavioral characteristics influencing their suitability as hosts of C. sonorensis.  相似文献

A population of cabbage looper, Trichoplusia ni (Hübner), collected from commercial greenhouses in the lower mainland of British Columbia, Canada, in 2001 showed a resistance level of 24-fold to Dipel, a product of Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) subspecies kurstaki. This population was selected with Cry1Ac, the major Bt Cry toxin in Dipel, to obtain a homogenous population resistant to Cry1Ac. The resulting strain of T. ni, named GLEN-Cry1Ac, was highly resistant to Cry1Ac with a resistance ratio of approximately 1000-fold. The larvae from the GLEN-Cry1Ac strain could survive on Cry1Ac-expressing transgenic broccoli plants that were highly insecticidal to T. ni and diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella (L.). The inheritance of Cry1Ac resistance in this T. ni strain was autosomal and incompletely recessive. The degree of dominance of the resistance was -0.402 and -0.395, respectively, for the neonates in reciprocal crosses between the GLEN-Cry1Ac and a laboratory strain of T. ni. Using chi2 goodness-of-fit test, we demonstrated that the inhibition of larval growth resulting from testing 12 toxin doses in the progeny of the backcross fit the predicted larval responses based on a monogenic inheritance model. Therefore, we conclude that the inheritance of the resistance to Cry1Ac in the T. ni larvae is monogenic.  相似文献

A chemical lure derived from flowers that are visited by moths attracts male and female alfalfa loopers, Autographa californica (Speyer) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). This feeding attractant is dispensed from polypropylene bottles that provide controlled release for several weeks. A killing station was tested in the laboratory, in a screenhouse, and in the field in combination with this lure as an "attract-and-kill" system. Starved alfalfa looper adults (moths) were strongly attracted to the attract-and-kill station in a flight tunnel, and 90.9% of female moths and 87.6% of male moths that contacted the station died. In commercial fields of alfalfa hay, female moths captured in monitoring traps were reduced by 80-93% in plots receiving 125 attract-and-kill stations per hectare. In screenhouse trials using two attract-and-kill stations per screenhouse, oviposition on potted lettuce plants by starved female alfalfa looper moths was reduced by 98.5%. Moths were less likely to be attracted to lures when provided sugar before flight tunnel assays, and oviposition by fed moths was much less affected by attract-and-kill stations in screenhouse trials, compared with starved moths. This method has potential as a means to manage alfalfa looper populations in vegetable and other agricultural crops. However, consideration must be given to competing food and odor sources in the field.  相似文献

【目的】本研究旨在明确氰氟虫腙对草地贪夜蛾Spodoptera frugiperda幼虫的毒力水平和田间防治效果,为科学使用氰氟虫腙防治草地贪夜蛾提供参考依据。【方法】采用饲料混毒法在室内测定了氰氟虫腙与4种常用杀虫剂甲维盐、氯虫苯甲酰胺、虱螨脲和茚虫威对草地贪夜蛾3和6龄幼虫的致死中浓度(LC50)及LC90值,以及LC90浓度的这些杀虫剂对3龄幼虫的致死中时(medium lethal time, LT50)值。采用人工喷雾方法测定了玉米田中22%氰氟虫腙悬浮剂(6.6 g/667 m2)、22%氰氟虫腙悬浮剂(17.6 g/667 m2)、5.7%甲维盐水分散剂(1 g/667 m2)和150 g/L茚虫威悬浮剂(2 g/667 m2)对草地贪夜蛾幼虫的防效。【结果】室内生测结果显示,供试的5种杀虫剂中氰氟虫腙对草地贪夜蛾3和6龄幼虫均具有较高的毒力,其LC50值分别为2.64和4.3...  相似文献

The Malpighian (renal) tubules play important roles in ionic and osmotic homeostasis in insects. In Lepidoptera, the Malpighian tubules are structurally regionalized and the concentration of Na+ and K+ in the secreted fluid varies depending on the segment of tubule analyzed. In this work, we have characterized fluid and ion (Na+, K+, H+) transport by tubules of the larval stage of the cabbage looper Trichoplusia ni; we have also evaluated the effects of fluid secretion inhibitors and stimulants on fluid and ion transport. Ramsay assays showed that fluid was secreted by the iliac plexus but not by the yellow and white regions of the tubule. K+ and Na+ were secreted by the distal iliac plexus (DIP) and K+ was reabsorbed in downstream regions. The fluid secretion rate decreased > 50% after 25 μM bafilomycin A1, 500 μM amiloride or 50 μM bumetanide was added to the bath. The concentration of K+ in the secreted fluid did not change, whereas the concentration of Na+ in the secreted fluid decreased significantly when tubules were exposed to bafilomycin A1 or amiloride. Addition of 500 μM cAMP or 1 μM 5-HT to the bath stimulated fluid secretion and resulted in a decrease in K+ concentration in the secreted fluid. An increase in Na+ concentration in the secreted fluid was observed only in cAMP-stimulated tubules. Secreted fluid pH and the transepithelial electrical potential (TEP) did not change when tubules were stimulated. Taken together, our results show that the secretion of fluid is carried out by the upper regions (DIP) in T. ni Malpighian tubules. Upper regions of the tubules secrete K+, whereas lower regions reabsorb it. Stimulation of fluid secretion is correlated with a decrease in the K+/Na+ ratio.  相似文献

A series of C11–C14 alcohols, varying in the number, position and geometry of double bonds, was applied topically to the sex pheromone glands of the tomato looper, Chrysodeixis chalcites, in order to study the acetylation step in the pheromone biosynthesis of this moth. Each application contained one of the alcohols and (Z)-11-tetradecenol, in equimolar amounts, as a metabolic standard for comparison of the relative conversion of the alcohols to acetates in the terminal biosynthetic step. One secondary and one tertiary alcohol were also included in the study. All alcohols were converted to the corresponding acetates at similar relative rates indicating that this step has a very low substrate specificity. One alcohol, (Z)-9-dodecenol was applied to the glands of head ligated females, which produces very small amounts of pheromone, in order to investigate the relation between the total biosynthesis of the pheromone and the acetylation step. The decrease in pheromone biosynthesis due to ligation of the head did not affect the acetylation step.  相似文献

A greenhouse study was conducted to investigate the persistence of methoxyfenozide in pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) foliage. An aqueous suspension of methoxyfenozide was sprayed on pepper plants at concentrations of 72 and 144 mg of active ingredient (a.i.)/L. Foliage was collected at different intervals of time (0, 3, 5, 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50 days) after the treatment, and the methoxyfenozide residue was measured by high‐performance liquid chromatography. The foliage was also used in bioassays to determine the residual toxicity on and the consumption rate of the third‐instar larvae of the beet armyworm, Spodoptera exigua (Hübner) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). The methoxyfenozide concentrations observed after 50 days had decreased to 19 and 69 μg/g per sample, corresponding to a loss of 61% and 28% from the application concentrations of 72 and 144 mg a.i./L, respectively. When fitting a first‐order kinetics degradation model, the half‐life (DT50) of this compound was 76 days. Both application concentrations of methoxyfenozide caused a high mortality rate (≥97%) when the larvae were fed the pepper foliage collected at all of the time intervals. Lastly, at all of the time points, the consumption rate by the larvae was reduced to between 57% and 92% for both concentrations that were bioassayed. Our results indicate that, under the present greenhouse conditions, the degradation of methoxyfenozide was slower than that reported by other authors and that its residues were highly toxic to S. exigua larvae. The implications of these results for the management programs of this pest are discussed.  相似文献

Feeding and maturation by the soybean looper, Pseudoplusia includens (Walker) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), were investigated in a 2-yr study on 'Davis' soybean, Glycine max (L.) Merr., grown alone and combined with the weed hemp sesbania, Sesbania exaltata (Raf.) Rybd. ex. A. W. Hill, the root-knot nematode, Meloidogyne incognita (Kofoid & White) Chitwood, and the charcoal rot fungus, Macrophomina phaseolina (Tassi) Goid. Of the three pests, hemp sesbania had the greatest effects on plant growth and insect feeding and maturation. When fed foliage from soybean stressed by hemp sesbania, soybean looper larvae remained longer in feeding stages, consumed more foliage, and showed altered weight gain compared with larvae fed control foliage. Results suggest that nutrient (s) critical for proper development of larvae may have been limited in weed-stressed soybean foliage. Less dramatic results were observed when larvae fed on foliage from soybean with roots colonized by the charcoal rot fungus. Such larvae consumed more foliage, weighed more, and showed a slight increase in larval feeding period, but only in 1 yr of the study. Colonization of soybean roots by the root-knot nematode had no consistent effects on either the soybean host or insect.  相似文献

The presence of a pheromone biosynthesis activating neurohormone in the head gandlia, and its effect on the sex phermone biosynthetic pathway, were investigated in the tomato looper, Chrysodeixis chalcites (Esper). Comparison of pheromone components and precursor levels in the presence and absence of the factor was performed using untreated, ligated and ligated and injected virgin females. Pheromone glands of treated and untreated moths were extracted and analyzed by capillary gas chromatography for their most abundant pheromone components, (Z)-7-dodecenyl acetate and (Z)-9-tetradecenyl acetate, and the putative biosynthetic precursors hexadecanoate, (Z)-11-hexadecenoate, (Z)-9-tetradecenoate and (Z)-7-dodecenoate. Comparison of the amounts of the pheromone and precursor components in the three groups of females indicated that a neuroendocrine factor is involved in the regulation of the pheromone biosynthesis in C. chalcites. Lack of such a factor resulted in a marked decrease of the sex pheromone components as well as the three unsaturated putative biosynthetic precursors. However, no decrease was observed in the content of palmitoate, suggesting that the Δ11 desaturation step is affected by the neuroendocrine factor. Injection of head ganglia extracts into ligated females resulted in a recovery of unsaturated precursor and phermone content. Both male and female head ganglia were found to contain a sex pheromone biosynthesis regulatory factor. However, the stimulatory pattern of the factor from the two sexes was different, suggesting that the two factors are quantitatively and/or qualitatively distinct.  相似文献

The development of superior soybean, Glycine max (L.) Merr., cultivars exhibiting resistance to insects has been hindered due to linkage drag, a common phenomenon when introgressing alleles from exotic germplasm. Simple-sequence repeat (SSR) markers were used previously to map soybean insect resistance (SIR) quantitative trait loci (QTLs) in a'Cobb' X PI 229358 population, and subsequently used to create near-isogenic lines (NILs) with SIR QTL i n a 'Benning' genetic background. SIR QTLs were mapped on linkage groups (LGs) M (SIRQTL-M), G (SIRQTL-G), and H (SIRQTL-H). The objectives of this study were to 1) evaluate linkage drag for seed yield by using Benning-derived NILs selected for SIRQTL-M, SIRQTL-H, and SIRQTL-G; 2) assess the amount of PI 229358 genome surrounding the SIR QTL in each Benning NIL; and 3) evaluate the individual effects these three QTLs on antibiosis and antixenosis to corn earworm, Helicoverpa zea (Boddie), and soybean looper, Pseudoplusia includens (Walker). Yield data collected in five environments indicated that a significant yield reduction is associated with SIRQTL-G compared with NILs without SIR QTL. Overall, there was no yield reduction associated with SIRQTL-M or SIRQTL-H. A significant antixenosis and antibiosis effect was detected for SIRQTL-M in insect feeding assays, with no effect detected in antixenosis or antibiosis assays for SIRQTL-G or SIRQTL-H without the presence of PI 229358 alleles at SIRQTL-M. Summary A highly specific recognition system, capable of foreseeing and distinguishing between two critical points in time, exists in Mamestra brassicae (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). Both points in time, the onset of a drought period and the end of the growth season, require different growth patterns of the pupae. In order to minimize the likelihood of weather-induced mortality and to maximize fitness, individuals of M. brassicae must enter aestival dormancy or hibernal diapause, respectively, before the onset of drought or frost. This study is primarily concerned with aestival dormancy. Normally, the pupal period of dormancy-free developing individuals amounts to approximately 20 to 30 days. A modified pupal period of approximately 35 to 80 days is defined as aestival dormancy. The onset of aestival dormancy is triggered by day lengths exceeding an innate individaul-specific threshold. The results reported in this paper indicate that the photoperiodic response curve represents largely the genetic variability within a population with respect to the thresholds triggering aestival dormancy. This variability in thresholds is considered to reflect the frequency of correlation of a distinct day length with a certain onset of drought period in the past. Furthermore, the innate thresholds are characterized by a temperature dependent norm of reaction. Our results also indicate, that a strong genetical component is involved in variability of duration of the pupal period. This variability in duration of aestivation reflects the frequency of drought periods of a certain length in the past. The adaptive significance of both the variation in day length thresholds and duration of aestival dormancy is discussed with respect to the number of generations per season, and the synchronization of the individual life cycles with the seasonal changing environmental conditions.This study is dedicated to Prof. H.J. Soybean looper, Pseudoplusia includens (Walker), oviposition in cotton, Gossypium hirsutum L., and soybean, Glycine max (L.) Merr., of various stages of plant phenological development was evaluated in field cages in 1994, 1995, and 1996. Overall, females preferred to oviposit on soybean over cotton when both crops were compared in vegetative or prebloom stages, when both crops were blooming, and when soybean was blooming or in early pod stage compared with prebloom cotton. Females preferred to deposit eggs on the lower leaf surface in the upper two-thirds of the plant canopy in cotton and soybean. Oviposition in upper and middle canopy levels varied with plant growth stage. Females tended to lay more eggs in the upper canopy compared with the middle canopy in prebloom cotton and vegetative soybean; more eggs were laid in the middle canopy of blooming cotton and reproductive stages of soybean. Females responded to both cotton and soybean volatiles in an olfactometer. There was no significant difference in response to the two sources of volatiles.  相似文献
