Between March 1966 and May 1968 Palaearctic passerines were mist-netted in thick bush and lightly wooded savannah habitats near Kampala, on the northern shore of Lake Victoria. This paper reports weights of the seven principal species involved. Most migrants appeared to be in a lean condition during the winter months, when weights were relatively low and varied little in each species. Birds were not particularly light on arrival. In fact, autumn Garden Warblers Sylvia borin and Willow Warblers Phylloscopus trochilus were sometimes markedly heavy, and for the former species there was some evidence that the individuals concerned were passage migrants. Autumn weights of Swallows Hirundo rustica, Reed Warblers Acrocephalus scirpaceus and Yellow Wagtails Motacilla flava were similar to those recorded in winter. The mean weight of all species rose during late March or early April. Although most Garden Warblers and Willow Warblers trapped at the time of spring migration were within the normal winter weight range, many Acrocephalus warblers and the majority of Sand Martins Riparia riparia and Yellow Wagtails were rather heavy. Spring weights 40% or more above mean winter weight were not uncommon in the Sedge Warbler Acrocephalus schoenobaenus, but were recorded only occasionally in other species. Although most passerine migrants evidently left Kampala with substantial fat reserves, it was concluded that a considerable number of warblers departed at rather low weight. High spring weights were mainly confined to a period of two or three weeks in each of the warbler species. Locally wintering Acrocephalus warblers must have attained full premigratory weights within three weeks, and a number of spring retraps showed substantial gains at minimum mean rates of between 0–1 and 0–35 g per day. Most heavy Garden Warblers were probably on passage. Significant correlations between weight and wing-length were obtained for all species investigated, regressions of weight on wing-length being in the range 011-0-25 g/mm. Spring weights are briefly compared with data from Nigeria, and the northward migration of passerines from Lake Victoria is discussed.  相似文献

Nocturnal migration of Reed Warblers Acrocephalus scirpaceus was studied by trapping with 'high nets' on the Courish Spit (Eastern Baltic) during spring 1998–2000. In spring, Reed Warblers left the stopover site between 45 and 240 min after sunset (median 84 min), although 85% of birds took off between 45 and 120 min after sunset. Birds did not arrive until the fifth hour after sunset; 67% of birds ended their nocturnal flights in the penultimate hour before sunrise, i.e. at dawn. At the moment of migratory departure, the average Reed Warbler body mass was 12.79 ± 0.66 g ( n  = 60). Average body mass of birds ending migratory flight was 11.69 ± 0.67 g ( n  = 18). The difference was highly significant. However, more than half of the birds completed migratory flights with a considerable fuel load, and some even had energy stores sufficient for a migratory flight on the next night. The spring migratory strategy of Reed Warblers over Central and Northern Europe probably includes a succession of short migratory flights (4–6 h) during several subsequent nights with 1-day stopovers.  相似文献

Nesting success and chick survival of a migratory population of Houbara Bustard Chlamydotis [undulata] macqueenii were studied during three consecutive years (1998–2000) in the Xinjiang province of north‐west China. A total of 45 nests was monitored and 85 broods comprising 227 chicks were captured, of which 82 chicks were radio‐tracked. Start of laying varied between 6 and 17 April between years but the laying mode fell consistently between 26 and 30 April. Mean clutch size was 4.0 (sd = 0.8) (range 2–6) for early clutches and 3.3 (sd = 1.1) for late clutches (range 2–5). The average nesting success was 0.588 (sd = 0.270) but great variations were observed between years –0.882 in 1998, 0.530 in 1999 and 0.351 in 2000. This was related to increased predation in 1999 and 2000, which is reflected by increased predator density (chiefly Corsac Fox Vulpes corsac and Long‐legged Buzzards Buteo rufinus). The overall hatchability, defined as the proportion of eggs hatched in successful nests was 0.839 sd = 0.238). The average brood size at hatching varied from 2.9 (sd = 0.8) to 3.3 (sd = 0.9) according to years, and no significant decrease in brood size was observed in the first 5 days post‐hatching. In 1999 and 2000 the brood size diminished sharply (14% and 27%, respectively) in prefledging chicks. A further severe decrease (37%) was observed in fledglings in 2000, probably due to predation by raptors. For the 3 years of the study, a successful female Houbara would bring on average 2.3 (sd = 0.9) chicks to fledging and would have lost 30.2% (sd = 14.9%) of its brood to adversity during the rearing process. The proportion of females that lost their entire brood was 0.181 in 1998, 0.708 in 1999 and 0.453 in 2000. For the 3 years of the study, only 55.3% (sd = 26.3%) of the females hatching eggs brought chicks to fledging. The overall chick production was 0.827 per breeding female per year and the probability of an egg laid producing a fledgling of 8 weeks old was 0.190.  相似文献

Global environmental processes like climate change could severely affect population level migratory behaviour of long range migrant birds. We analyzed changes in migration phenology and biometrics of three closely-related long-distance migrant Acrocephalus species. We used the records of 12 063 Sedge, 12 913 Reed, and 5 409 Marsh Warblers caught and ringed between 1989–2009, at a Hungarian stopover site. Quantile regressions were used to analyse the changes in spring and autumn migration phenology. Median spring arrival date of Sedge and Reed Warblers shifted 6.5 and 7.5 days earlier, respectively. Autumn arrival of all species shifted one (Reed and Marsh Warblers) or two (Sedge Warbler) weeks later. Mean body mass of adult Reed and Marsh Warblers decreased in spring (by 0.3 and 0.2 grams, respectively) and in autumn (by 0.8 and 0.2 grams, respectively) while body mass of adult Sedge Warblers decreased only in autumn (by 0.4 grams). Mean wing length of all species increased significantly (range of change: 0.6–1 mm). Despite the fact that the studied species are closely related, all three have remarkably different migration strategies. However, similar patterns can be observed in the studied parameters, indicating that global processes may have general effects on these species, albeit through markedly different mechanisms.  相似文献

Arguments in support of the non-stop and the intermittent strategies for crossing the Sahara have been based on data on the fat reserves of birds before the crossing and of birds grounded in the desert. In this paper, flight-range estimates were calculated and the necessary assumptions about air speed, energy input during flight, and energy equivalent of body reserves were evaluated. As examples, Willow Warblers Phylloscopus trochilus and Garden Warblers Sylvia borin were investigated during autumn migration from two study sites north of the Sahara and two study sites in the desert. In still air, the flight-range for both species at all study sites was too short to reach the Sahel zone without refuelling. It is concluded that birds depend on tailwinds for a successful crossing, independent of a non-stop or an intermittent migratory strategy, and that weather conditions in autumn allow them to rely on tailwinds.  相似文献

Declining numbers of Blackpoll Warblers (Setophaga striata) have been documented at long‐term migration monitoring sites as well as in breeding areas. However, the “loop migration” of Blackpoll Warblers makes it difficult to ascribe population change at migration monitoring sites to specific breeding populations. Individuals from all populations across the breeding range of Blackpoll Warblers concentrate in fall along the Atlantic coastline of eastern North America prior to initiating a transoceanic flight to wintering areas. In spring, Blackpoll Warblers return along a different route, moving north into the southeastern United States where birds from eastern and western breeding populations then diverge during migration to reach their respective breeding areas. To monitor breeding populations outside of breeding areas and identify factors potentially affecting those populations, we must be able to identify where birds captured during migration breed and map seasonal variation in population‐specific flyways. To “map” population‐specific migration movements of Blackpoll Warblers, we used feather deuterium (δ2Hf) values and a spatially explicit model to assign molt origins of 289 Blackpoll Warblers moving through sites in the Gulf of Maine (GOM) region and at three locations further west and south (northern Great Lakes area, Pennsylvania, and Florida). The assignment method was validated with feather samples from 35 birds captured during the breeding season at Churchill, Manitoba, Canada. As predicted, the spatial pattern of movement within and between seasons reflected “loop migration.” Blackpoll Warblers captured during fall migration in the GOM region included birds from across their breeding range, whereas birds captured during the spring were exclusively from northeastern populations. During fall migration, Blackpoll Warblers captured at two sites west of the GOM were from breeding areas further northwest than those from western Canada that were captured in the GOM. Blackpoll Warblers captured in eastern Florida during spring migration were assigned exclusively to breeding areas in the northeast, suggesting that eastern and western populations diverge soon after entering the United States. Finally, most Blackpoll Warblers sampled at Manomet Bird Observatory originated from breeding populations in Alaska and western Canada that have shown a similar (70–90%) decline over the same period. Our results, therefore, not only document the “loop migration” pattern of Blackpoll Warblers, but, by mapping patterns of connectivity between breeding and non‐breeding areas, may help target conservation efforts for breeding populations of Blackpoll Warblers where most needed.  相似文献

We report the first successful use of miniature Global Positioning System loggers to track the ocean‐going behaviour of a c. 400 g seabird, the Manx Shearwater Puffinus puffinus. Breeding birds were tracked over three field seasons during the incubation and chick‐rearing periods on their foraging excursions from the large colony on Skomer Island, Pembrokeshire, UK. Foraging effort was concentrated in the Irish Sea. Likely foraging areas were identified to the north, and more diffusely to the west of the colony. No foraging excursions were recorded significantly to the south of the colony, conflicting with the conclusions of earlier studies based on ringing recoveries and observations. We discuss several explanations including the hypothesis that foraging may have shifted substantially northwards in recent decades. We found no obvious relationship between birds’ positions and water depth, although there was a suggestion that observations at night were in shallower water than those during the day. We also found that, despite the fact that Shearwaters can be observed rafting off‐shore from their colonies in the hours prior to making landfall at night, breeding birds are usually located much further from the colony in the last 8 h before arrival, a finding that has significance for the likely effectiveness of marine protection areas if they are only local to the colony. Short sequences of precise second‐by‐second fixes showed that movement speeds were bimodal, corresponding to sitting on the water (most common at night and around midday) and flying (most common in the morning and evening), with flight behaviour separable into erratic (indicative of searching for food) and directional (indicative of travelling). We also provide a first direct measurement of mean flight speed during directional flight (c. 40 km/h), slower than a Shearwater's predicted maximum range velocity, suggesting that birds are exploiting wave or dynamic soaring during long‐distance travel.  相似文献

ABSTRACT Stopover‐site quality has often been assessed using changes in the body mass of migrants estimated from individuals recaptured on subsequent days or using regression methods. We compared estimates of mass change using these two techniques to estimates of mass change determined from birds recaptured on the same day. Using spring and fall banding data collected on Appledore Island, Maine, from 1990–2007, we examined body mass changes of the five most common species. Over this period, 18,954 individuals of these five species were captured and banded, with 11.6% of birds recaptured at least 1 d after initial capture and 3.1% recaptured on the same day. Using both regression and same‐day recapture methods, all five species had positive hourly mass gains during fall migration; results were mixed for the subsequent‐day analysis method. Trends were less consistent during spring migration. Using all three methods of estimating mass change, Red‐eyed Vireos (Vireo olivaceus) lost mass, American Redstarts (Setophaga ruticilla) and Northern Waterthrushes (Parkesia noveboracensis) gained mass, and results for Yellow‐bellied Flycatchers (Empidonax flaviventris), and Black‐and‐white Warblers (Mniotilta varia) varied with method. We found similar trends in mass change using the same‐day recapture and regression methods. However, we found lower mean mass gain for most species using the same‐day recapture method, suggesting that there may be a short‐term capture and handling effect. Our results provide additional support for the use of regression models to compare changes in mass of migrating songbirds at stopover sites.  相似文献

Weight and other data were collected on over 1300 Sedge Warblers Acrocephalus schoenobaenus in central Kenya, mainly during spring (April-May). The weight, fattening rate and length of stay of spring passage birds varied from one site to another. In scrub and thicket at Kariobangi, Nairobi, passage and new arrival continued each year into May; few birds stayed to fatten, and weights over 16 g (40% above mean winter weight) were practically never recorded. At Lake Nakuru, thousands of birds were present during late April-early May 1972; many stayed to fatten for 1–3 weeks, and weights over 16 g (maximum 215 g) were not uncommon; new arrivals of lean birds continued into May. At Athi River, in 1971, many of the birds present during mid-late April stayed 1–2 weeks and fattened rapidly; 20% of all late April weights were in the range 16–21 g. Mean fattening rates at Nakuru and Athi River were 0.31 and 0.64 g/d respectively. The migration strategy and potential flight range of Kenyan spring birds is discussed. Active wing moult was rarely recorded. Most locally wintering birds and spring passage birds were judged to have renewed their plumage during the preceding October-January.  相似文献

Cerulean Warblers (Setophaga cerulea) are a species with declining populations that exhibit regional variation in habitat selection and demographic rates. The Ozark region of the south‐central United States likely provides important habitat for Cerulean Warblers, but little is known about their breeding biology in that region. We studied Cerulean Warblers in riparian forests of the Ozarks of Arkansas from 2018 to 2020. We assessed multi‐scale habitat selection for vegetative and topographic features, documented their breeding biology, estimated within‐season and annual apparent survival, and estimated territory sizes. We found that Cerulean Warblers selected riparian habitat characterized by large‐diameter trees across all spatial scales. Contrary to the results of previous studies, males appeared to avoid white oaks (Quercus spp., Section Quercus) at the territory scale, but this avoidance may reflect an underlying preference for riparian habitat. Our logistic‐exposure estimate of nest survival (0.32; 85% confidence interval: 0.21–0.46) was similar to the median of estimates reported in previous studies. Our results indicate that maintaining riparian forests with large trees is important to provide suitable habitat for Cerulean Warblers in the Ozark region. Because of similarities in habitat selection among regions, some management practices from other populations, including retaining large trees and promoting a heterogeneous canopy structure, may be useful for managing for Cerulean Warblers in riparian areas of the Ozarks. However, selection for topography and tree species by Cerulean Warblers in our study also suggests that region‐specific management strategies will be beneficial. Finally, our demographic rate estimates for this population should prove valuable in future full‐annual‐cycle population modeling efforts.  相似文献

ABSTRACT Migration represents one of the most vulnerable stages of a migrant's life cycle, but the strategies and stopover sites used by Neotropical migrants in Central America are not well known. We carried out constant‐effort mist netting and conducted censuses along transects during one autumn (2007) and one spring (2008) migration in northeast Belize. We recorded more landbird migrant species in autumn (63) than in spring (54), and spring abundance was >25% lower for 88% of transient species. These differences in presence and abundance indicate that routes and stopover strategies vary between seasons and species. In autumn, fuel loads, calculated as any increase in mass above lean body mass (LBM), were generally small (mean = 5.9% LBM and 10.1% LBM for wintering and transient species, respectively) and fuel deposition rates and minimum stopover durations suggest that some individuals replenished energy reserves in our study area. Variation in autumn fuel loads meant that some individuals had reserves sufficient for flights >1000 km. Fuel loads were larger in spring for 16 of 17 species, and the mean spring fuel load for transient species (32.5% LBM) was sufficient for a flight from northeast Belize to North America without refueling. The similarity in spring passage times between northeast Belize and the Gulf Coast of the United States also suggests that energy reserves were not replenished in northeast Belize prior to crossing the Gulf of Mexico. We hypothesize that sufficient energy reserves are accumulated during spring stopovers in northern South America or elsewhere in Mesoamerica to allow migrants to fly directly to North America without refueling.  相似文献

Managing oxidative stress is an important physiological function for all aerobic organisms, particularly during periods of prolonged high metabolic activity, such as long‐distance migration across ecological barriers. However, no previous study has investigated the oxidative status of birds at different stages of migration and whether that oxidative status depends on the condition of the birds. In this study, we compared (1) energy stores and circulating oxidative status measures in (a) two species of Neotropical migrants with differing migration strategies that were sampled at an autumn stopover site before an ecological barrier; and (b) a species of trans‐Saharan migrant sampled at a spring stopover site after crossing an ecological barrier; and (2) circulating oxidative measures and indicators of fat metabolism in a trans‐Saharan migrant after stopovers of varying duration (0–8 nights), based on recapture records. We found fat stores to be positively correlated with circulating antioxidant capacity in Blackpoll Warblers and Red‐eyed Vireos preparing for fall migration on Block Island, USA, but uncorrelated in Garden Warblers on the island of Ponza, Italy, after a spring crossing of the Sahara Desert and Mediterranean Sea. In all circumstances, fat stores were positively correlated with circulating lipid oxidation levels. Among Garden Warblers on the island of Ponza, fat anabolism increased with stopover duration while oxidative damage levels decreased. Our study provides evidence that birds build antioxidant capacity as they build fat stores at stopover sites before long flights, but does not support the idea that antioxidant stores remain elevated in birds with high fuel levels after an ecological barrier. Our results further suggest that lipid oxidation may be an inescapable hazard of using fats as the primary fuel for flight. Yet, we also show that birds on stopover are capable of recovering from the oxidative damage they have accrued during migration, as lipid oxidation levels decrease with time on stopover. Thus, the physiological strategy of migrating songbirds may be to build prophylactic antioxidant capacity in concert with fuel stores at stopover sites before a long‐distance flight, and then repair oxidative damage while refueling at stopover sites after long‐distance flight.  相似文献

Raw count data are often used to estimate bird population densities. However, such data do not consider detection probability. As an alternative, methods that model detection probability such as distance-sampling have been proposed. However, standard distance-sampling provides reliable estimates for absolute density only when the underlying assumptions are met. One of the most critical of these assumptions is that animals on a transect line or at an observation point have to be detected with certainty (the g (0) = 1 assumption). We radiotagged nine Orphean Warblers Sylvia hortensis and estimated their short-distance detection probability. Birds were radio-located in 264 cases in single bushes or trees. Their visual detection probability after a 5-min search was only 0.58 (sd = ±0.14, range = 0.38–0.80), although the observer knew the bird's location. Furthermore, we carried out a literature review to assess how the g (0) = 1 assumption is handled in practice. None of the 28 standard distance-sampling papers reviewed contained an estimation of g (0). In 57% of the papers, the g (0) = 1 assumption was not even mentioned. Nevertheless, none of the authors declared their estimates as being relative. Our empirical data show that the g (0) = 1 assumption would be severely violated for a foliage-gleaning bird species at a desert stopover site outside the breeding season. The literature review revealed that the testing of the g (0) = 1 assumption is largely ignored in practice. We strongly suggest that more attention should be paid to the testing of this key assumption, because results may not be reliable when it is violated. If it is not possible to test the g (0) = 1 assumption or g (0) is less than 1, alternative methods should be used. Another possibility is to estimate detection probability by the means of radiotagged individuals.  相似文献

Emetics can be used to obtain food samples from birds, but they can harm birds during or after treatment. Studies to date suggest that apomorphine is a safe emetic for songbirds, but information is needed about possible post‐release deleterious effects. From March to July 2012, we collected food samples from insectivorous songbirds using apomorphine. We treated 67 Moustached Warblers (Acrocephalus melanopogon), 56 Reed Warblers (Acrocephalus scirpaceus), 15 Great Reed Warblers (Acrocephalus arundinaceus), and 12 Savi's Warblers (Locustella luscinoides). Effectiveness in inducing regurgitation was high (76.7%) and varied among species, being significantly more effective with Reed Warblers (91.1%). No birds died during treatment. To check for possible post‐release negative effects, we considered 53 treated Moustached Warblers and 37 treated Reed Warblers and selected an equal number of untreated individuals (simply captured, banded, and measured). We found no support for differences in survival or recapture probabilities between treated and untreated birds of either species within 21 d after administering apomorphine. We calculated body mass changes of all Moustached Warblers subsequently recaptured (within 21 d) and found no difference between treated (N = 8) and untreated (N = 22) birds, suggesting normal foraging activity after release. Our results suggest that apomorphine is a safe emetic, with no negative effect on survival at least in the short term. The effectiveness of apomorphine with insectivorous songbirds in our study contrasts with the results of some previous studies and confirms the differences in effectiveness among different taxa of songbirds. As with differences in effectiveness among species in our study, this variability in sensitivity to the emetic could be caused by morphological and physiological differences among different taxa.  相似文献

Pollen data from China for 6000 and 18,000 14C yr bp were compiled and used to reconstruct palaeovegetation patterns, using complete taxon lists where possible and a biomization procedure that entailed the assignment of 645 pollen taxa to plant functional types. A set of 658 modern pollen samples spanning all biomes and regions provided a comprehensive test for this procedure and showed convincing agreement between reconstructed biomes and present natural vegetation types, both geographically and in terms of the elevation gradients in mountain regions of north‐eastern and south‐western China. The 6000 14C yr bp map confirms earlier studies in showing that the forest biomes in eastern China were systematically shifted northwards and extended westwards during the mid‐Holocene. Tropical rain forest occurred on mainland China at sites characterized today by either tropical seasonal or broadleaved evergreen/warm mixed forest. Broadleaved evergreen/warm mixed forest occurred further north than today, and at higher elevation sites within the modern latitudinal range of this biome. The northern limit of temperate deciduous forest was shifted c. 800 km north relative to today. The 18,000 14C yr bp map shows that steppe and even desert vegetation extended to the modern coast of eastern China at the last glacial maximum, replacing today’s temperate deciduous forest. Tropical forests were excluded from China and broadleaved evergreen/warm mixed forest had retreated to tropical latitudes, while taiga extended southwards to c. 43°N.  相似文献

Afro‐Palaearctic migrants are declining to a greater degree than other European species, suggesting that processes occurring in Africa or on migration may be driving these trends. Constraints on food availability on the wintering grounds may contribute to these declines but little is known about when and where these resource constraints may occur. Sufficient resources are particularly important prior to spring migration, when migrants must cross the Sahara Desert. We examined mass gain and departure phenology in a long‐distance Palaearctic passerine migrant to determine the degree to which pre‐migratory fattening occurs in their long‐term non‐breeding territories in the Guinea Savannah region of Africa. We monitored 75 Whinchats Saxicola rubetra for departure from their non‐breeding territories in one spring, and analysed mass data of 377 Whinchats collected over three non‐breeding seasons plus 141 migrating Whinchats caught in April over 8 years, all within the same few square kilometres of human‐modified Guinea Savannah in central Nigeria. Whinchats left their winter territories throughout April, with males departing on average 8 days earlier than females. However, there was no evidence that time of departure from territory was linked to age, body size or mass at capture. Whinchats departed their territories with a predicted mass of 16.8 ± 0.3 g, considerably less than the c. 24 g required for the average Whinchat to cross the Sahara directly. Comparing departure dates with arrival dates in southern Europe showed a discrepancy of at least 2 weeks, suggesting that many Whinchats spend considerable time on pre‐migratory fuelling outside their winter territory prior to crossing the Sahara. Overwintering birds gained mass slowly during February and March (0.03 g/day), and non‐territorial or migrating birds at a much higher rate in April (at least 0.23 g/day), with up to 20% of migrating Whinchats in April potentially having sufficient fuel loads to cross the Sahara directly from central Nigeria. Our results suggest that most Whinchats leave their winter territories to fatten up locally or, possibly, by staging further north, closer to the southern limit of the Sahara. Resource constraints are therefore likely to be particularly focused in West Africa during mid‐April and possibly at staging areas before the crossing of the Sahara Desert.  相似文献

The long‐tongued nectar bat Macroglossus minimus lagochilus (Megachiroptera, Pteropodidae) is a small fruit bat inhabiting South‐east Asia. Its reproduction was studied in Brunei, Borneo, where individuals were usually captured in rainforest (Ulu Temburong). Adult females (n = 23) had body masses of 13.0–19.0 g, with forelimbs 3.83–4.33 cm in length. All adult females were pregnant, with pregnancies observed during every month except May, September and November when no adult females were captured. Female M. minimus in Brunei have a reproductive cycle that is consistent with a pattern of seasonal bimodal polyoestry. Most births appear to occur from November to May, during which time females experience two births: the first centred around November and December, and the second centred around April and May. These two birth seasons appear correlated to the two seasons of greater rainfall in Brunei: October to December, and April to July. Oestrous and mating apparently occur soon after each birth; however, there appears to be a 2‐ to 3‐month period of delayed embryonic development following the births centred around April and May. The data are consistent with embryonic development commencing around July and August (after a delay) for the births centred around November and December, and around December and January for the births centred around April and May. Migration distance and sex are integral to avian migration strategies, yet these intrinsic factors are understudied with respect to their effects on stopover ecology and behavior. We investigated how individual variation in migration distance and sex affected body condition, refueling performance, and stopover durations of Wilson's Warblers (Cardellina pusilla) during spring and fall 2006 at a stopover site in southern Arizona. Migration distance of individuals was inferred using the hydrogen stable isotope ratio of feathers (δ2Hf) as an index of breeding latitude, refueling rate was assessed using plasma triglyceride and β‐OH‐butyrate, and minimum length of stay was estimated by re‐sighting color‐banded birds. In the spring, migration distance and sex were strong determinants of the timing of migration by Wilson's Warblers, with males and shorter‐distance migrants passing through the site earlier than females and longer‐distance migrants. Later‐arriving migrants also had higher fat scores and refueling rates. However, neither migration distance nor sex independently affected body condition (fat score or size‐corrected mass), refueling rate, or minimum length of stay. In a smaller sample of fall migrants, we found that longer‐distance migrants and males had higher refueling rates than shorter‐distance migrants and females. Our results show that differences in migration distance can, under some circumstances, affect how birds use stopover sites. Stable isotope analysis and other methods can provide information on migration distance, and should be integrated with measurements of timing, fuel stores, refueling performance, and departure behavior to gain a deeper understanding of bird migration.  相似文献

A new species of seven‐gilled hagfish Eptatretus astrolabium (Myxinidae) is described from a 400 mm total length female trapped 1 km east from Planet Rock, Astrolabe Bay, Papua New Guinea, at c. 500 m depth. This is the first hagfish species reported from the waters around New Guinea. It can be distinguished from other hagfishes by a combination of characters including seven pairs of gill apertures, three‐cusp multicusps on the anterior and posterior rows of cusps, 10 posterior unicusps, 52 total cusps, 18–19 prebranchial pores, five branchial pores, 48–49 trunk pores, 83–84 total pores and no nasal‐sinus papillae.  相似文献

Migrating birds require en route habitats to rest and refuel. Yet, habitat use has never been integrated with passage to understand the factors that determine where and when birds stopover during spring and autumn migration. Here, we introduce the stopover‐to‐passage ratio (SPR), the percentage of passage migrants that stop in an area, and use 8 years of data from 12 weather surveillance radars to estimate over 50% SPR during spring and autumn through the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic coasts of the south‐eastern US, the most prominent corridor for North America’s migratory birds. During stopovers, birds concentrated close to the coast during spring and inland in forested landscapes during autumn, suggesting seasonal differences in habitat function and highlighting the vital role of stopover habitats in sustaining migratory communities. Beyond advancing understanding of migration ecology, SPR will facilitate conservation through identification of sites that are disproportionally selected for stopover by migrating birds.  相似文献
