THE TAXONOMIC IMPLICATIONS OF POLLEN MORPHOLOGY IN SOME SOUTH AMERICAN SPECIES OF MIMULUS (SCROPHULARIACEAE)

The pollen grains of South American hexaploid representatives of the Mimulus glabratus complex, section Simiolus, and M. bridgesii, a South American species sometimes included in this complex and sometimes in section Paradanthus, were examined by light and scanning electron microscopy. Mimulus bridgesii has (6-) 4–5-zoniaperturate grains nearly identical to those observed in a complex of species in section Paradanthus. South American members of the M. glabratus complex (M. bridgesii excluded) have the irregularly synaperturate, ± spiraperturate pollen typical of section Simiolus (sensu Grant). Treatment of M. bridgesii as a palynologically aberrant member of section Simiolus is not supported by what is known about the evolution of pollen types in Mimulus and the evolution and dispersal of the M. glabratus complex.     

中国蛇根草属种类订正

蛇根草属Ophiorrhiza Linn.是我国西南部至东南部热带、亚热带山地森林中很常见的一类草本植物。我国各主要标本室收藏的蛇根草属标本甚多,即使最保守的估算也超过3000号份,这些标本中未经鉴定的约占75%。上述数字说明对我国产的蛇根草属植物作一次较全面的订正很有必要。作者参加《中国植物志》茜草科的编写,蛇根草属是所承担任务的一部份,本文就是清理我国主要标本室历年收集的这属标本的小结。     

CYTOGEOGRAPHY AND PHYLOGENY OF THE NORTH AMERICAN SPECIES OF VERBENA

Illus. 1961.—Chromosome numbers of 26 Verbena species in North America, separable into 2 series, are reported. The x = 5 series has no diploid representative, few tetraploids, and numerous widespread hexaploid species, while the x = 7 series has many pandemic diploid species and few tetraploid and hexaploid taxa. When compared with the data available for the South American verbenas, these frequencies and distributions were found to be almost opposite. The origin of the 2 groups from an x = 6 prototype followed by ascending and descending aneuploidy is suggested. Migration via tropical land bridges is proposed to explain the occurrence of both groups in the 2 continents. The following taxa are proposed: subgenus Verbenaca (Schauer) Lewis, and subgenus Glandularia (Gmelin) Lewis.     

NOTES ON THE SOUTH AFRICAN SPECIES OF CORVUS

The three indigenous species of Corvus in South Africa are compared in respect of geographical and ecological distribution, status, breeding, food, economic importance and general habits. Apart from the limitation of range in albicollis by its nesting requirements, it is extremely difficult to pin-point any factors in which the species so differ as to explain the paradoxes of their distribution.     

中国欧缬草近缘种的分类订正

作者通过查阅国内外标本及多次野外调查采集,对我国的欧缬草近缘种做了一个初步整理。经研究发现,在我国与欧缬草相近的缬草种共有6种1变种,其中包括两个新种;此外,欧缬草在我国仅有引种栽培,而与我国广泛分布且过去被误定为欧缬草的并非一种。
