Based on analysis of publications, the principal directions of research carried out in the field of forest entomology in Russia and abroad are considered. Most of the foreign papers are published by entomologists from the USA (27%), Sweden (14%), Canada (12%), and Finland (8%), many studies are carried out by international research teams. In all, the publications considered cover over 90 species of forest insects (excluding predators and parasites) that may act as more or less important forest pests. Most of the papers are devoted to species of great economic significance. Most effort in entomological studies carried out in Russia is focused on the role of phytophagous insects in forest ecosystems, their population dynamics and the factors of its regulation, and ecology of selected pest species. In the studies carried out abroad, much more attention is paid to physiology of insects, the problems of communication, looking for pheromones, kairomones, and antifeedants to be used as new agents of plant protection and improvement of methods of their application, and also to interactions between phytophages and their host plants. The problems hindering development of forest entomology in Russia are considered; most of them result from lack of steady financial support of this field of research from the government.  相似文献

Thermodynamic parameters derived from optical melting studies are reported for duplex formation by a series of oligoribonucleotides containing G.U mismatches. The results are used to determine nearest-neighbor parameters for helix propagation by G.U mismatches. Surprisingly, the [formula; see text] nearest-neighbor free energy increment in unfavorable in the contexts [formula; see text], and [formula; see text] but favorable in the context [formula; see text]. This is a non-nearest-neighbor effect. In contrast, the [formula; see text] free energy increment is favorable and independent of context. Circular dichroism and imino proton NMR spectra of several sequences do not reveal an obvious structural basis for this dichotomy. For example, all the G.U mismatches have two slowly exchanging imino protons. The imino resonances for the G.U mismatches in GGAGUUCC, GUCGUGAC, and CCUGUAGG, however, broaden at lower temperature than the imino resonances for the interior Watson-Crick base pairs. In contrast, the imino resonances for the G.U mismatches in GGAUGUCC remain sharp at high temperature. The improved parameters for G.U mismatches should improve predictions of RNA structure from sequence.  相似文献

 The chromosomes of 31 species of Passiflora, distributed throughout the subgenera Astrophea, Calopathanthus, Distephana, Dysosmia, Passiflora, Plectostemma and Tacsonia were analysed. Three different karyotypes were observed: 2n = 12, 24, 36; 2n = 18, 72 and 2n = 20. The karyotype of these species was almost always constituted of metacentric and submetacentric chromosomes with variable karyotype symmetry. In the group with x = 6, represented by the subgenus Plectostemma, six diploid species with 2n = 12, one tetraploid with 2n = 24 (P. suberosa) and an intraspecific polyploid with 2n = 12, 36 (P. misera) were analysed. P. pentagona (subgenus Astrophea) may also be included in this karyological group since it presents 2n = 24 and may be of polyploid origin, with x = 6. The interphase nuclei in this group were areticulate, except those of P. morifolia and P. pentagona with semi-reticulate characteristics. Two small terminal heterochromatic blocks, positive for chromomycin A3, were identified in the largest chromosome pair of P. capsularis and P. rubra, species very closely related, while P. tricuspis displayed four chromosomes with proximal blocks. In the group with x = 9, represented mainly by subgenus Passiflora, 20 species with 2n = 18 and one with 2n = 72 were studied. They presented chromosomes larger than those species with x = 6 and interphase nuclei of semi-reticulate type, except for P. mixta with areticulate nuclei. Four terminal CMA+ blocks were observed in P. edulis, six blocks in P. caerulea and P. racemosa, while five blocks were observed in the single P. amethystina plant analysed. P. foetida (subgenus Dysosmia), the only species with 2n = 20, exhibited six chromosomes with CMA+ blocks and interphase nuclei of the areticulate type. The meiotic analysis of representatives of the three groups (P. foetida, P. suberosa, P. cincinnata and P. racemosa) always presented regular pairing and regular chromosome segregation, except in P. jilekii where a tetravalent was observed. The analysis of the chromosome variation within the genus and the family suggests that the base number of Passiflora may be x1 = 6 or x1 = 12, whereas x2 = 9 is only an important secondary base number. In order to understand the electron transfer mechanisms for the [Fe] and [Ni-Fe] hydrogenases, a kinetic study of cytochrome c3 reduction has been undertaken. Cyclic voltammetry and controlled-potential amperometry techniques have been used to investigate the intermolecular electron-transfer reaction between cytochrome c3 and [Fe] hydrogenase from Desulfovibrio vulgaris Hildenborough. Electron-transfer cross-reactions between [Fe] or [Ni-Fe-Se] hydrogenase and cytochrome c3 from Desulfovibrio vulgaris Hildenborough or Desulfovibrio desulfuricans Norway have been studied. Some structural implications are considered from these experimental data.  相似文献

Abstract. The taxonomic and genetic relationships between P.machaon rathjensi Warnecke from the west side of southern Arabia and P.machaon muetingi Seyer from the east are discussed, together with suggestions of their relationship to P.machaon saharae Oberthiir from the northern Hejaz, Sinai and desert North Africa. It is concluded that though P.m.rathjensi and P.m.saharae are subspecifically distinct, they are very closely related to each other, and both should be regarded as specifically distinct from the rest of the machaon complex.
The remainder of the machaon complex in its turn presents a somewhat similar problem. Thus P.machaon gorganus Fruhstorfer and P.hospiton Géné are normally regarded as good species, but Fl caterpillars have been found in the wild and the cross can be readily produced in captivity with no upset in the sex ratio. Furthermore, recently we have obtained sparse F2 offspring between the two species.
We therefore suggest that the entire P.machaon complex is in a labile state as regards speciation throughout its range and the relationships between the various forms are not easily expressed through the traditional species and subspecies concepts. Our tentative conclusions are that the status of P.machaon and P.hospiton as distinct species probably remains valid. The saharaelrathjensi complex might be considered distinct from P.machaon using the biological species concept, while their genetics indicate a more conservative approach. However, more important than the exact status of the taxa in question is the fact that the P.machaon complex illustrates evoluton in action, the end result of which cannot be predicted.  相似文献

The distributional patterns of forest birds and butterflies in the Andaman islands, an oceanic chain located off SE Asia, were tested for nestedness. Both taxa were highly nested. Nestedness could be due to colonization or extinction processes, area or distance effects or nestedness of habitats. Nestedness in forest bird distributions were strongly influenced by area and habitat related factors. Habitats were significantly nested in all three island groups, however most strongly for the North Andamans. However forest bird distributions in the North Andamans, as indicated by row order in the packed matrix, was not correlated with habitat diversity, suggesting that habitat related factors alone cannot account for these patterns. Other causal influences could be passive sampling, where common and abundant species and habitats are more likely to have a widespread distribution than rare species and habitats. The nested subset pattern seen in two unrelated taxa suggests that the Andamans are extinction dominated and that the protection of forests on large islands is critical for the conservation of its biodiversity.  相似文献

Stock enhancement started in Taiwan with the building and casting of artificial reefs in 1973. It was only in late 1987, however, that an integrated program on the operation and establishment of a stock enhancement system was developed. In addition to building artificial reefs and establishing resource protection zones to create fishing grounds, the current stock enhancement program in Taiwan aims at restocking broodstock and fry or seeds. So far, seven species of finfish, four species of mollusks, and six species of crustaceans have been restocked. A total of 5.8 million finfish fry, 5 million molluskan seeds, and 30 million crustacean larvae with some eel and prawn broodstocks have been released up to 1996. Although there are plans to establish sea-farming centers in Taiwan, the organization of the system has not been established completely. Furthermore, regulations on resource augmentation, protection and management of coastal fisheries and stock enhancement are absent or lacking. The success of stock enhancement depends on the pollution control that is in place in coastal areas and the fishermen‘s awareness of the importance of resource conservation and their involvement. The paper discusses the status,problems and prospects of stock enhancement in Taiwan, with some viewpoints in population genetics. It also refers to some experience in Japanese sea-farming. The strength of the heart beat depends on the amplitude and time course of the transient increase in [Ca2+] in the myocytes with each cycle. [Na+]i modulates cardiac contraction through its effect on the Ca2+ flux through the Na/Ca exchanger. Cardiac excitation–contraction coupling has been postulated to occur in a microdomain or ‘fuzzy’ space at the junction of the T-tubules and the sarcoplasmic reticulum. This ‘fuzzy’ space is well described for the Ca2+ fluxes and the interaction between the L-type Ca2+ channel, the Ca2+ release channel of the sarcoplasmic reticulum and the Na/Ca exchanger. Co-localization of the Na+ transporters, in particular the Na/K pump and the Na+ channel, within this ‘fuzzy’ space is not as well established. The functional and morphological characteristics of the ‘fuzzy’ space for Na+ and its interaction with the Ca2+ handling suggest that this space is not strictly co-inciding with the Ca2+ microdomain. In this space [Na+] can be several-fold higher or lower than [Na+] in the bulk cytosol. This has implications for modulation of [Ca2+]i during a single beat as well as during alterations in Na+ fluxes seen in pathological conditions.  相似文献

It is well known that land use change can affect soil C storage of terrestrial ecosystems either by altering the biotic processes involved in carbon cycling or by altering abiotic processes such as carbon adsorption on soil minerals. Relatively few studies, however, have examined the dynamics of soil C pools after conversion of farmland to forest or pasture. We selected three pairs of secondary forests and pastures that originated from the same abandoned sugarcane (interspecific hybrids of Saccharum spp.) land in the wet tropics of Hawaii to examine whether forest or pasture converted from farmland is more effective in sequestering C in soils. We compared the soil C pool, soil chemistry, and stable C isotope ratios between the forests and pastures. We found that total soil C was greater (P?<?0.01) in forests than in the pastures 22 years after land conversion. The percentages of SOC4 in the pastures were significantly higher than in the secondary forests in both soil layers. The percentages of SOC3 in the pastures were lower than in the secondary forests in both soil layers. The net SOC3 increase in the forest soils at 0–10 and 10–25 cm was 28.6?±?5.6 and 43.9?±?3.2 Mg ha?1 while net SOC4 increase in pasture soils at these respective depths was 18.8?±?2.2 and 26.1?±?2.7 Mg ha?1. We found that the net increases of SOC3 in both soil layers in the forest were greater (P?<?0.01) than the net increases of SOC4 in the respective soil layers in the pasture. Aluminum saturation was greater (P?<?0.01) in the forests than the pastures in both soil layers. There was no difference in oxalate extractable Fe concentration between the forests and the pastures but oxalate extractable Al concentration in both soil layers was greater (P?<?0.05) in forests than the pastures. Our findings indicated that reforestation of abandoned sugarcane farmland in Hawaii is more effective in soil C increase and stabilization than conversion to pasture.  相似文献
