Hyperactive children (N = 15) and nonhyperactive children (N = 15) were compared. Hyperactive children were found to possess significantly higher (p less than .002) muscular tension levels and, in addition, presented more behavioral problems and had lower test scores. Both electromyographic (EMG) biofeedback and progressive relaxation exercises were successful in the significant reduction of muscular tension, hyperactivity, distractability, irritability, impulsivity, explosiveness, aggressivity, and emotionality in hyperactive children. The greatest improvement was seen in the area of "emotionality-aggression" (irritability, explosiveness, impulsivity, low frustration tolerance, aggresion). No differences were seen in the EMG improvement of drug and nondrug hyperactive children; both made progress under these self-control techniques. However, nondrug children made greater improvements in the behavioral area. Both EMG biofeedback and progressive relaxation resulted in improvements on the test scores of hyperactive subjects (Bender-Gestalt, Visual Sequential Memory, Digit Span, Coding). The therapy would appear to be improved by the inclusion of mental relaxation, concentration, meditation, and mind-blanking exercises for mental control.  相似文献

Previous research suggests that self-defined insomniacs are distinguished from normals by high levels of anxiety and physiological arousal, which might be mitigated by muscle relaxation. This study assessed the relative effects of frontal EMG biofeedback, progressive relaxation, and a placebo set of relaxation exercises on the sleep of 18 onset insomniacs. Each subject was trained in one of these three methods for six half-hour sessions and slept in the laboratory for two consecutive nights before and after training. The experimental groups demonstrated significant decreases in physiological activity during training while changes in the control group were minimal. Reductions in sleep-onset time were: biofeedback group, 29.66 minutes; progressive relaxation group, 22.92 minutes; control group, 2.79 minutes. The experimental groups improved significantly(p<.05) more than the control group, but did not differ from each other. No significant relationships between physiological levels and sleep-onset time were found, which suggests that muscle relaxation alone was not responsible for subjects' improvements. This pilot study compared biofeedback to increase respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) with EMG and incentive inspirometry biofeedback in asthmatic adults. A three-group design (Waiting List Control n = 5, RSA biofeedback n = 6, and EMG biofeedback n = 6) was used. Six sessions of training were given in each of the biofeedback groups. In each of three testing sessions, five min. of respiratory resistance and EKG were obtained before and after a 20-min biofeedback session. Additional five-min epochs of data were collected at the beginning and end of the biofeedback period (or, in the control group, self-relaxation). Decreases in respiratory impedance occurred only in the RSA biofeedback group. Traub-Hering-Mayer (THM) waves (.03-.12 Hz) in heart period increased significantly in amplitude during RSA biofeedback. Subjects did not report significantly more relaxation during EMG or RSA biofeedback than during the control condition. However, decreases in pulmonary impedance, across groups, were associated with increases in relaxation. The results are consistent with Vaschillo's theory that RSA biofeedback exercises homeostatic autonomic reflex mechanisms through increasing the amplitude of cardiac oscillations. However, deep breathing during RSA biofeedback is a possible alternate explanation.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to examine the relative effectiveness of electromyographic biofeedback training(EMG BFT), remeditation, and progressive muscle relaxation(PMR) in eliciting a relaxation or trophotropic response as measured by frontalis muscle tension, heart rate, electrodermal response, respiration rate, and skin temperature. Fifty-four college students were randomly assigned to one of five groups:(1) control,(2) placebo control,(3) EMG BFT,(4) meditation,(5) PMR. After baseline measures were obtained subjects were trained in 10 30-minute training sessions and posttested. Comparisons by ANOVAs indicated there was a significant decrease in muscle tension in the EMG BFT and meditation groups and significant decreases in respiration rate in the meditation and PMR groups. No other changes were attributed to treatment.  相似文献

Successful treatment of torticollis with electromyographic (EMG) biofeedback has been reported in a number of single case and single group studies. The present investigation represents the first controlled outcome study. Twelve torticollis patients were randomly assigned to EMG biofeedback or relaxation training and graded neck exercises (RGP). The procedure involved three sessions of baseline assessment, 15 sessions of EMG BF or RGP, 6 sessions of EMG BF or RGP plus home-management, 6 sessions of home-management alone, and follow-up 3 months after the end of treatment. A variety of outcome measures were used including physiological (EMG from the two sternocleidomastoid muscles, skin conductance level), behavioral (angle of head deviation, range of movement of the head), and self-report (depression, functional disability, body concept), therapist and significant other reports and independent observer assessment of videos. In both groups, neck muscle activity was reduced from pre- to posttreatment. This reduction was greater in the EMG biofeedback group. There was evidence of feedback-specific neck muscle relaxation in the EMG biofeedback group. Therefore, the outcome was not due to nonspecific factors and could be attributed to feedback-specific effects. Changes in skin conductance level showed that neck muscle relaxation was not simply mediated by a general reduction of arousal. Significant improvements of extent of head deviation, and range of movement of the head, as well as reductions of depression were present, which were not different in the two groups. At the end of treatment, no patient was asymptomatic. Any therapeutic benefit was generally maintained at follow-up. The results and the procedural simplicity of RGP make the issue of cost-efficacy of EMG biofeedback a pertinent one. Further controlled outcome studies of EMG biofeedback treatment of torticollis with larger samples are required.This work was funded by grants from the Medical Research Council and the Dystonia Society.  相似文献

During relaxation training, awareness of trial-to-trial changes in frontalis-muscle tension levels was assessed with and without auditory electromyographic(EMG) biofeedback. Immediately after each 128-sec training trial, the subject was required to guess whether muscle tension indexed by EMG activity increased(“Up”) or decreased(“Down”) relative to the immediately preceding trial. The probability of correct guessing, P(c), improved as the absolute difference in EMG increased between trials only when biofeedback was presented. For subjects not receiving biofeedback, P(c) remained low even when the absolute difference between trials was large. Subjects in each condition employed a strategy to guess “Down” more often consistent with the expectation that they were being trained to relax. The “Down” set strategy was shown to be separable from the informational basis of P(c) provided by biofeedback. This procedure can be employed to evaluate central assumptions of biofeedback relating to posttraining awareness of changes in muscle tension and the relationship between awareness and control of muscle tension.  相似文献

A biofeedback-based stress management training program was experimentally evaluated using populations of middle-level managers from a large corporation. The training program, once-weekly 1-hour sessions for 6 weeks, combined frontal and other site EMG biofeedback, progressive relaxation and breathing exercises, cognitive stress management, and generalization techniques. Control groups participated in either the assessment procedures only or the assessment procedures and six once-weekly discussions of stress and the job on both an individual(two sessions) and group(four sessions) basis. Significant effects were found in self-report measures, state and trait anxiety, experience of stress; in physiological measures, basal frontal EMG and frontal EMG during recovery from stress, and finger temperature; and in ratings of overall job performance. However, no consistent advantage for the training group or either control group was found. Several possible explanations for the failure of the biofeedback-based stress management training condition to achieve a consistent advantage over the control conditions are presented.  相似文献

This study examined whether group progressive relaxation training was as effective as individual EMG biofeedback training in facilitating the academic achievement and self-control of 45 hyperactive elementary school children. Academic achievement was assessed with the Gates-MacGinities Reading Tests, and self-control was measured with the Nowicki-Strickland and the Teacher Rating scales. Eight sessions were scheduled at weekly intervals. Progressive relaxation was conducted in groups of seven or eight and was induced with a commercial audiocassette program. EMG training augmented frontalis biofeedback with those taped exercises. A placebo group listened to taped children's stories. Multivariate analysis of variance indicated no significant differences among the three contrast groups when all dependent variables were considered together. However, univariate F values and discriminant analysis disclosed locus of control to be significantly more internal for the progressive relaxation condition. Also, differences between the two relaxation and the placebo groups, though not statistically significant, were all in the expected direction. While the relative efficacy of group progressive relaxation could not be established conclusively, the data appeared sufficiently positive to warrant further investigation of this cost-effective prospective intervention.The opinions expressed by the authors are not necessarily those of their respective institutions.  相似文献

The lack of comparative reviews of the efficacy of EMG frontalis biofeedback versus alternative procedures for reduction of muscle tension prompted the present meta-analytic treatment of literature previously concluded to be equivocal. Twenty studies comparing EMG frontalis biofeedback with other tension-reduction procedures produced a total of 68 separate effect sizes suitable for meta-analysis. Differences between clinical and normal samples were nonsignificant, and data analyses revealed that EMG frontalis biofeedback was significantly superior to control (p<.05) but that alternative forms of muscle relaxation, while effective, did not reach statistical significance.  相似文献

The biofeedback literature affirms the therapeutic efficacy of EMG-biofeedback-assisted relaxation for the treatment of tension headache. However, this form of therapy has failed to focus on the role of cognitive variables in the control and perception of tension headache. The present case study provides a prototype treatment combining cognitive behavior-modification procedures with EMG-biofeedback training to treat a subject with chronic tension headache. Phase I, baseline, involved collecting mean EMG and daily headache activity, emphasizing specification of environmental stressors. Phase II, cognitive skills-training, focused on:(1) identifying negative self-statements(cognitions) related to stressors, and(2) training the subject to replace negative self-statements with coping self-instructions. This treatment resulted in a 33% headache reduction over baseline, with no concomitant changes in frontalis EMG. Phase III, EMG-biofeedback training, resulted in a 38% reduction in mean EMG level and a 66% reduction in mean headache activity when compared to baseline. The results suggest the importance of attending to cognitive factors in the treatment of tension headache.This paper was presented at the 6th annual meeting of the Biofeedback Research Society, Monterey, California, 1975.  相似文献

Therapeutic mechanisms hypothesized to underlie improvements in tension headache activity achieved with combined relaxation and eleclromyographic (EMG) biofeedback therapy were examined. These therapeutic mechanisms included (1) changes in EMG activity in frontal and trapezii muscles, (2) changes in central pain modulation as indexed by the duration of the second exteroceptive silent period (ES2), and (3) changes in headache locus of control and self-efficacy. Forty-four young adults with chronic tension-type headaches were assigned either to six sessions of relaxation and EMG biofeedback training (N = 30) or to an assessment only control group (N = 14) that required three assessment sessions. Measures of self-efficacy and locus of control were collected at pre- and posttreatment, and ES2 was evaluated at the beginning and end of the first, third, and lost session. EMG was monitored before, during, and following training trials. Relaxation/EMG biofeedback training effectively reduced headache activity: 51.7% of subjects who received relaxation/biofeedback therapy recorded at least a 50% reduction in headache activity following treatment, while controls failed to improve on any measure. Improvements in headache activity in treated subjects were correlated with increases in self-efficacy induced by biofeedback training but not with changes in EMG activity or in ES2 durations. These results provide additional support for the hypothesis that cognitive changes underlie the effectiveness of relaxation and biofeedback therapies, at least in young adult tension-type headache sufferers.  相似文献

BackgroundMuscle imbalance between serratus anterior (SA), upper trapezius (UA), middle trapezius (MT), and lower trapezius (LT) muscles has been observed in subjects with subacromial impingement syndrome (SAIS).Objective(1) To investigate the effect of electromyography (EMG) biofeedback training on muscle balance ratios and scapular kinematics in healthy adults and subjects with SAIS. (2) To investigate whether the effects of EMG biofeedback on muscle balance ratios are different between groups.DesignTwelve healthy adults and 13 subjects with SAIS were recruited in this study. EMG was used to record the activity of scapular muscles. The ratios (UT/SA, UT/MT, and UT/LT) during exercises with/without EMG biofeedback were calculated. Scapular kinematics were recorded before and after exercises with/without EMG biofeedback.ResultsFor the subjects with SAIS, muscle balance ratios were lower during forward flexion with EMG biofeedback than during exercise only (UT/SA: 70.3–45.2; UT/LT: 124.8–94.6). Additionally, similar results were found during side-lying external rotation (UT/MT: 58.5–36.4). For the scapular upward rotation and tipping in both groups, there were no significant differences with and without EMG biofeedback.ConclusionEMG biofeedback improved the scapular muscular balance during training exercises in both groups. Further clinical trials should investigate the long-term effects of EMG biofeedback.  相似文献

In view of the pervasiveness of stress reactions in contemporary society, together with the limited availability of effective coping techniques, the authors attempted to develop a stress management program that combined education on the nature of stress disorders with instruction on several practical procedures useful in coping with stress. Our study used a general population drawn from a small rural university community. There were 38 subjects, 17 male and 21 female, in the final statistical analyses. One independent variable was a lecture-discussion format to present cognitive and relaxation skills. A second independent variable was biofeedback training to decrease frontal EMG activity. The subjects were divided into five treatment groups that consisted of one or some combination of these two treatment conditions. Dependent variables were the two scales—A-State and A-Trait—of Spielberger's STAI(Spielberger, Gorsuch, & Lushene, 1970) and an adaptive application of Kerle and Bialek's(1958) Subjective Stress Scale(SSS). The SSS served as an instrument to keep subjects aware of their physical and psychological responses to stress as well as providing a pre/post measure of reactions to stress as they experienced it. Results indicated that the lecture-discussion format was effective in reducing the subjects' level of stress as measured by the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory and the Subjective Stress Scale. There was no evidence that frontal EMG feedback relaxation training contributed to the reduction of stress.  相似文献

Two middle-aged subjects, a male and female, with spastic dysphonia(hoarseness, stammering) were treated with both frontalis and throat muscle electromyographic(EMG) biofeedback. Both subjects reported no noticeable improvement in their voice qualities. Results of a battery of psychological tests provided some insight into the inability of EMG treatment, as well as other therapeutic approaches, to alleviate the pathology.  相似文献

During frontal EMG biofeedback training, the relationship between frontal EMG and digital skin temperature was investigated in two experiments, which varied the number of baseline and feedback sessions. The results of Experiment 1 suggested a general relaxation effect, where digital temperature increased as frontal EMG decreased, especially for subjects with initially low hand temperature. Experiment 2 extended the number of baseline and feedback sessions and qualified the results of Experiment 1. EMG and digital temperature did not simultaneously converge toward general relaxation over the extended baseline or feedback sessions in Experiment 2. Furthermore, when the feedback signal was introduced, digital temperature dropped quickly but recovered to baseline levels within three feedback sessions; this drop in digital temperature was interpreted within the context of attentional demands of the biofeedback task. The results appeared consistent with the view that frontal biofeedback training teaches a discriminative skill of lower frontal EMG, and that this skill does not readily generalize to digital skin temperature.This research was supported by Grant 2 S06RR08038-17 funded by the National Institutes of Mental Health.  相似文献

Electromyographic(EMG) biofeedback, for the relaxation of specific throat and facial muscles, was given to a woodwind musician. The patient had a nineteen-year history of tics and high levels of tension in his throat and facial muscles. Eventually these problems progressed to a point that interfered with his ability to perform as a professional woodwind musician. Following detoxification from alcohol and Dexamyl, and after a period of psychotherapy, EMG biofeedback relaxation training was started for the muscles specifically showing chronically high tension levels. The EMG training consisted of four phases designed to help the patient progressively lower tension and generalize these newly learned techniques to his professional life. He had a total of twenty treatments of approximately 45 minutes each. This procedure resulted in dramatic reductions in tension levels of the specific throat and facial muscles along with increased proficiency as a muscician and in psychological functioning.  相似文献

Six athetoid cerebral palsy patients participated in the following: speech and motor prebiofeedback training evaluation; frontal EMG biofeedback training, 6 wk; speech and motor postbiofeedback training evaluation, Frontal pretraining levels for the subjects averaged 28.9 µV p-p. Subjects' feedback consisted of an auditory signal(clicks) varying proportionately with frontal EMG activity. A visual meter display of the integrated EMG was also provided. Self-regulation of frontal EMG was evident for all subjects within session 1. Throughout all sessions, EMG levels of 2–4 µV were often attained. Trend analysis of EMG acquisition curves showed significant reduction in frontal tension across sessions for all but one subject. Frontal posttraining levels averaged 13.0 µV p-p. Parents or subjects, or both, reported subtle improvements in various speech and motor functions, a finding confirmed by objective postbiofeedback training evaluation. Only the 2 most severely impaired subjects, JA and DS, failed to improve significantly on the speech measures. All subjects improved significantly on those measures that tapped fine and gross motor skills. Collectively, these results indicate that EMG biofeedback training shows promise as an additional treatment modality in the habilitation of cerebral palsy patients.  相似文献

Twenty-four college students participated in a single session of electromyographic (EMG) biofeedback in a comparison of three experimental control procedures commonly employed in biofeedback relaxation training research. One group received contingent EMG biofeedback from the forehead area, and each subject in this group served as his or her own control. Subjects in a second group received noncontingent EMG feedback from a tape recorder but were instructed to use the feedback signal to relax their forehead muscles (single blind). Subjects in a third group received the same auditory feedback as those in the second group but were not told the purpose or source of the feedback stimulus (yoked control). The contingent feedback group showed significantly less EMG activity when compared to the other two groups. However, this group did not exhibit significant EMG level decrements from the beginning to end of the session. This seemingly contradictory finding may have been due to statistically capitalizing on the artifactually high EMG level of the experimental and control groups, although the single-blind and yoked-control groups showed nonsignificant increases across the session. The single-blind group's data had a variance several times larger than the other two groups' variance. Findings are discussed with respect to a probing hypothesis as opposed to the previously offered frustration hypothesis. In this case report, a 25-year-old female with chronic dysphagia spastica(difficulty swallowing because of constriction of the throat muscles) was treated with 20 sessions of frontal electromyographic(EMG) biofeedback and home-relaxation practice. The subject monitored on a 10-point scale her difficulty swallowing during meals for 2 months prior to treatment, during treatment, and after treatment. There was a significant decrease in reported difficulty swallowing associated with frontalis EMG feedback. Improvement was maintained at a 6-month follow-up.  相似文献
