Potentially toxic diatoms belonging to the genus Pseudo-nitzschia were observed for the first time in plankton samples from Hong Kong collected in 1996. To determine whether potentially toxic diatoms had become more common during the last six decades, three gravity cores were taken from the anaerobic sediments of Kowloon Bay in Victoria Harbour. Anaerobic sediments are thought to be ideal for palaeoecological reconstructions because their vertical stratigraphy is undisturbed by bioturbidation. Analysis of the Kowloon Bay sediment cores indicated that very few individual diatoms belonged to the genus Pseudo-nitzschia, even though Pseudo-nitzschia was found in abundance in many of the plankton samples taken from a nearby site. The relative absence of Pseudo-nitzschia frustules was interpreted as indicating that these thin walled, poorly silicified, planktonic diatoms failed to preserve in the saline (32–34‰), slightly alkaline (pH 7.6–7.8), anaerobic sediments of Kowloon Bay. Dissolution of thinly silicified diatoms rather than predation was believed to be the reason for their virtual absence in the core. The anaerobic conditions near the bottom of Kowloon Bay and the shallowness of the Bay, 12 m, makes predation an unlikely explanation. Diatom abundance declined in the sediment cores below a depth of 15 cm (ca 1955). This was attributed to the decrease in nutrient loading to Victoria Harbour prior to 1955 rather than enhance diatom dissolution in the deeper sediments. Core LNO3 is 1136 cm long and includes uninterrupted sediments from the Oldest Dryas to historic time which have been submitted for geological, geochemical, palynological and diatom analysis. Thirty samples have been investigated for diatoms, focussing especially on their preservation, which changed during major hydrological events. In the lower part of the core (Oldest Dryas to beginning of Atlantic), with low carbonate, but high clastic silicate content, the diatoms are rare but are well preserved. In the upper well carbonated part of the core (Atlantic to historical periods), the diatoms are abundant but show traces of dissolution.Between 1136 and 909 cm (Oldest Dryas) the flora is made up of benthic species principally of the genus Fragilaria. This flora is often the first to develop after the last glaciation. Between 879 and 569 cm (Bølling to beginning of Atlantic), littoral and terrestrial species adapted to eutrophic conditions are dominating. They suggest a strong fluvial impact on sedimentation, which corroborates the hypothesis of past inflows of the River Aar into the lake. Between 529 cm and 1 cm (Atlantic to historical periods) planktonic species of the genera Cyclotella, Aulacoseira or Stephanodiscus are dominating. This suggests that the upper well carbonated sediments were mainly formed by pelagic precipitation, without influence of the River Aar. The trophic level of the lake seems to have decreased, then increased again during prehistoric deforestation and development of agriculture in the watershed.  相似文献

In the context of a main project that aims to recover modern data on diatom distribution applicable to paleosalinity reconstructions in coastal areas of Southern South America, the composition and distribution of dead diatom assemblages in the littoral zone of the Quequén Salado estuary (Argentina) were studied. Diatom zones were defined along the estuarine gradient by cluster analysis and related to the salinity range and sediment composition by Canonical Correspondence Analysis. Four diatom zones were identified. A mixture of marine, brackish and freshwater diatoms, probably allochthonous, characterized the inlet (zone I). Marine/brackish taxa, represented mainly by Paralia sulcata dominated zone II, characterized by polyhaline conditions and sandy sediments. Zone III was characterized by mesohaline conditions, muddy sediments and the dominance of the estuarine diatom Amphora helenensis. Brackish/freshwater and freshwater diatoms dominated the headwaters (zone IV), where salinity was always below 5‰. The comparison of Quequén Salado diatom assemblages with previous results from the Quequén Grande estuary showed a similar taxonomic composition between both estuaries. However, differences in the salinity ranges of the estuaries (related to differences in the degree of human impact and tidal range) lead to a displacement in their spatial distribution along the longitudinal estuarine axis. This paper contributes to the knowledge of the ecological requirements of South American estuarine diatoms and provides useful data for paleosalinity reconstructions in the region. Teratological forms of Stephanodiscus niagarae Ehrenb. and S. parvus Stoermer & Håkansson were observed during a study of diatoms preserved in a radiometrically dated core from Hamilton Harbour (Lake Ontario, Canada). Morphological features and ultrastructures of both species were studied under the light and scanning electron microscope. The valve structure of abnormal forms of S. niagarae appears to be weakly silicified, especially in the central area. The shape of satellite pores are very irregular in comparison with the round shape of the normal specimen. The central fultoportulae are characterized as small tubes extending out of the external valve. Two types of abnormal frustules are present in the population of S. parvus studied. In one type valves are underdeveloped and only the siliceous layer and ribs are present, and in the other type the valves are strongly silicified and the areolae are almost completely occluded.The teratological forms of both species appeared in the core sediments after 1911, and both became the dominant components of diatom assemblages after 1970. Their occurrence and increased abundance coincides with records of heavy metal pollution in the harbour.  相似文献

Twenty one superficial sediment samples from areas of high and moderate eutrophication in the Gulf of Riga were studied with respect to siliceous microfossils, mainly diatoms.The results seem to imply that the number of taxa and the abundance of the frustules are affected by runoff from rivers and the degree of eutrophication in different parts of the Gulf. Areas with high eutrophication, e.g. the river estuaries, have diatom assemblages of varying composition, while in areas with moderate eutrophication the composition is almost constant and the influx of freshwater diatoms and littoral periphyton small. The high abundance and low diversity of brackish-marine and brackish, planktonic diatoms seem to be a result of an influx of nutrients and pollutants in the water and bottom sediments. The sea ice diatoms occurring in the Baltic waters and also in the Gulf of Riga tend to be resistant to eutrophication or are even favoured by it.  相似文献

A new standardized bioassay procedure for testing the chronic toxicity of sediments to Hyalella azteca was developed. Tests were initiated with 0–1 wk old amphipods exposed to sediments from Hamilton Harbour, Toronto Harbour, and Lake Ontario for 4 to 8 weeks. Both survival and growth were significantly reduced in the Hamilton Harbour sediments relative to those from the lake after 4 weeks. Exposures of 8 weeks resulted in greater variability; survival of amphipods in sediments from one of the harbour stations, and growth in sediments from both harbour stations with surviving young were not statistically different from survival and growth in lake sediments. Growth and survival in lake sediments were comparable to cultures grown with cotton gauze and no sediment after 4 weeks, but survival was poorer by week 8. Replication was good in 12 out of 13 tests done in duplicate; the difference in survival between replicates averaged 2.2 animals (20 amphipods/replicate, 4 week exposure). We propose that 4 week exposures of young (0–1 wk old) Hyalella would provide a suitable standardized chronic toxicity test for sediments. A multiproxy analysis of diatoms, chrysophyte cysts, opal phytoliths, and palynomorphs was undertaken in Negra Lagoon, to decipher Holocene changes in paleobotanical proxies associated with sea-level changes and paleolimnological conditions. Before the Holocene transgression (7000 yr BP), a terrestrial system was inferred as no aquatic palynomorphs or biogenic silica remains were recorded. During the sea-level maximum (5200 yr BP), marine/brackish conditions were established as indicated by diatoms, Chenopodiaceae, and a high content of cysts of Peridinioideae. The catchment consisted of grasslands and wetlands as indicated by the opal phytolith data. The Holocene transgression was followed by a sea-level decrease, which led to the onset of brackish/freshwater conditions as inferred from the co-dominance of freshwater and marine/brackish diatoms. This is also supported not only by the concomitant increase in non-siliceous freshwater microalgae and emergent macrophytes, but also by the presence of Myriophyllum. As sea level continued to decrease during late Holocene, a freshwater system was observed because of the complete separation from the ocean. Chrysophyte cysts were consistently recorded and brackish diatoms exhibited reduced abundances. The observed limnological changes are consistent with the alternative states hypothesis of Scheffer’s model (1998). That is, the clear water phases were explained because of high macrophyte abundances, low phytoplankton frequencies, high cyst to diatom ratios, and increase in frequencies of benthic diatom species. Conversely, turbid phases were likely to occur when low cyst to diatom ratios together with increase in planktonic diatoms and decrease in macrophytes values were detected. This highlights the importance of this approach to detect long-term changes in shallow lake alternative states.  相似文献

  • 1 The chemical characteristics of floodwaters in ephemeral rivers are little known, particularly with regard to their organic loads. These rivers typically exhibit a pronounced downstream hydrological decay but few studies have documented its effect on chemical characteristics and material transport. To develop a better understanding of the dynamics of floods and associated material transport in large ephemeral rivers, floods of the ephemeral Kuiseb River in south‐western Africa were tracked and repeatedly sampled at multiple points along the river's lower 220 km.
  • 2 We quantified the composition and transport of solute and sediment loads in relation to longitudinal hydrological patterns associated with downstream hydrological decay. Source and sink areas for transported materials were identified, and the composition and transport dynamics of the organic matter load were compared to those described from more mesic systems.
  • 3 Concentrations of sediments and solutes transported by floods in the Kuiseb River tended to increase downstream in association with pronounced hydrological decay. The contribution of particulate organic matter to total organic load is among the highest recorded, despite our observation of unusually high levels of dissolved organic matter. Hydrological decay resulted in deposition of all transported material within the lower Kuiseb River, with no discharge of water or materials to the Atlantic Ocean.
  • 4 Our results suggest that longitudinal variation in surface flow and associated patterns of material transport renders the lower Kuiseb River a sink for materials transported from upstream. The downstream transport and deposition of large amounts of labile organic matter provides an important carbon supplement to heterotrophic communities within the river's lower reaches.

In order to find a simple and efficient method to determine sulphate reduction rates in environmental samples, we tested different 35S-SO(4)(2-) radiotracer techniques. The methods varied in the application of 35S-SO(4)(2-) and subsequent extraction of reduced 35S-sulphur species. Samples were either incubated as sediment slurries mixed with the radiotracer, or as undisturbed sediment cores after core injection of the radiotracer. Reduced 35S-sulphur species were retrieved passively by diffusion or actively by reflux distillation. The methods were applied to surface sediments derived from three aquatic habitats situated in Germany: (1) a tideless brackish water, (2) a mining lake and (3) a natural freshwater lake. The best possible method was expected to yield the highest sulphate reduction rates, which were reproducible with respect to magnitude and depth distribution. At the same time, we aimed to keep the disturbance of samples as well as the expenditure of labour and equipment to a minimum. For all three types of aquatic habitats, the combination of core injection followed by diffusion was the most reliable and efficient method. This combination is therefore recommended for determination of sulphate reduction rates in laminated sediments.  相似文献

In the Schelde continuum, a succession in the phytoplankton community is observed along the transition from the river to the freshwater tidal reaches of the estuary and from the freshwater to brackish reaches of the estuary. The goal of this study was to experimentally evaluate the contribution of changes in salinity and light climate to this succession. In summer 2000 and in spring 2001, phytoplankton communities from the river, the freshwater tidal reaches and the brackish reaches of the estuary were incubated under high or low light intensities and exposed to a change in salinity. HPLC analysis was used to evaluate the response of different algal groups to changes in light intensity and salinity. When incubated at a light intensity corresponding to the mean underwater light intensity of the freshwater tidal reaches, growth of phytoplankton from the river as well as from freshwater tidal reaches was significantly lower than when incubated at a light intensity corresponding to the mean underwater light intensity of the river. The phytoplankton community from the freshwater tidal reaches did not appear to be better adapted to low light intensities than the phytoplankton community from the river. Although diatoms were expected to be less sensitive to a reduction in light intensity than green algae, the opposite response was observed. Freshwater and brackish water phytoplankton were negatively affected by respectively an increase or decrease in salinity. However, the effect of salinity was not strong enough to explain the disappearance of freshwater and brackish water phytoplankton between a salinity of 0.5 and 10 psu, suggesting that other factors also play a role. In the freshwater phytoplankton communities from the river and the freshwater tidal reaches, green algae and diatoms responded in a similar way to an increase in salinity. In the brackish water phytoplankton community, fucoxanthin displayed a different response to salinity than lutein and chlorophyll a.  相似文献

Results of the study of the diatom flora from surface sediments of the Amur River Estuary and adjacent areas of the Sea of Japan and the Sea of Okhotsk are presented for the first time. This study revealed high species diversity of diatoms: 287 diatom taxa belonging to 80 genera were identified in 35 surface sediment samples. The ecological composition of diatom assemblages allowed us to evaluate the influence of the Amur River runoff on adjacent areas of the seas.  相似文献

The diatom flora in the lower Damour River, a small coastal river in Lebanon, was studied during 1981. The study area included the Damour estuary and a tributary, the el-Hamam River. Achnanthes minutissima was the most abundant diatom in the flora. Other dominant taxa included Nitzschia dissipata and Navicula cryptocephala var. veneta in the spring and Anomoeoneis vitrea in the fall. The diatom community structure was characterized by 1 or 2 dominant taxa, a few common and many rare taxa, but the taxa in these categories varied according to season and locality. The freshwater flora had a group of 20 taxa which were widely distributed in the study area throughout the study period. These taxa, in addition to a few taxa of more restricted seasonal occurrence, were the major contributers to the flora and are characteristic of this river system. Certain aspects of the flora were resistant to change. Others were more sensitive to environmental conditions. The estuarine flora reflected brackish conditions beginning in June and extending through October.  相似文献

【目的】近年来由于抗生素的滥用,导致了多药物抗性超级细菌的产生,有关抗生素抗性基因(Antibiotic resistance genes,ARGs)在环境介质中分布、迁移和扩散已经引起人们的广泛关注。针对九龙江河口及厦门污水处理设施抗生素抗性基因污染情况开展研究。【方法】通过定性PCR研究九龙江河口水体、沉积物和厦门污水处理设施活性污泥中4种磺胺类、13种四环素类ARGs及2种整合子基因的污染情况,并选择四环素类tet(W)基因进行克隆文库测序分析。【结果】除tet(O)和tet(S)外,其他基因均被检出。不同环境介质中的ARGs及整合子基因检出率为活性污泥(0.86)>沉积物(0.57)>水体(0.24)。在淡水和淡盐水中,sul(l)、int(1)、tet(A)、tet(C)、tet(E)、tet(M)和tet(W)的检出率要高于海水,表明九龙江上游可能是ARGs的污染源之一。【结论】主成分分析表明污水处理设施是ARGs的高发载体;沉积物是ARGs的稳定载体;而水体中的ARGs易于分解。此外,tet(W)基因克隆文库分析表明,厦门污水处理设施也可能是九龙江河口及厦门沿岸的ARG污染源。  相似文献

As part of the general study of the hydrobiology of the southeastern Nigerian deltaic waters, phytoplankton samples were collected (Jan.–August, 1981, to Dec., 1984 irregularly). Sixty-seven species were identified, thirty-nine of which were diatoms. The diatoms constituted the dominant taxa especially in the brackish zone while desmids, green algae and blue-green algal species occurred more commonly in the freshwater usptream zone.  相似文献

This paper presents the results of a long-term survey of the hydrography, nutrients and phytoplankton in Tolo Harbour carried out between 1982 and 1992. Some nutrients such as total inorganic nitrogen, ammonia and total phosphorus increased during the 10 year period, but chlorophyll a, which indicated algal biomass, did not show an increasing trend. The phytoplankton of Tolo Harbour consisted largely of diatoms. Dinoflagellates and minor algal groups such as cryptomonads and small flagellates constituted a smaller fraction of the phytoplankton population. Densities of diatoms and minor algal groups increased in some stations, but the density of dinoflagellates remained relatively unchanged during the study period. Most nutrient variables were negatively correlated with densities of diatom and total phytoplankton, and positively correlated with densities of minor algal groups. While dinoflagellate densities were positively correlated with total nitrogen in some stations, no correlation existed between dinoflagellate density and most of the nutrient variables. Our results show that there is a gradual change in phytoplankton community in Tolo Harbour,most notably in the nutrient-rich inner harbour waters, with the smaller algae assuming increasing abundance. Thus there was a net increase in density of total phytoplankton even though chlorophyll a concentrations did not increase. No evidence was found in this study to show that increased nutrient loading would inevitably lead to increase in densities of dinoflagellates in Tolo Harbour. Instead, dinoflagellate densities showed stronger correlations with physical variables such as temperature, pH and salinity. A freshwater reservoir was dammed from the Baltic Sea in 1965. The recent sediments and the processes of accumulation in the reservoir have been investigated. The physical, chemical and diatom analyses of the sediments were carried out at 5 sampling points in order to dinstinquish the freshwater sediments from the underlying brackish sediments as well as to date the freshwater sediments. The pattern of sedimentation in the reservoir is described on the basis of these results and conclusions are drawn regarding the development of the water body. In interpretating the diatomological and the chemical results from the recent sediments certain common features are highlighted.  相似文献

In the geological research of the Holocene coastal deposits of The Netherlands, diatoms are used to reconstruct the sedimentary facies, palaeo-tide levels and salinity gradients during the deposition of the sediments. In this paper, the results of diatom research from 4 borings, taken from the early and middle Holocene deposits of central North Holland are presented. The oldest marine influenced sediments in the area are the deposits of the ‘Velsen layer’, a clay layer rich in organic matter and deposited about 8000–700014C years before present (BP) at a depth of 20–12 m below present mean sea-level. This clay layer was formed in a shallow, permanently submerged environment with a limited tidal influence (lagoonal or pond-like conditions). The salinity changed from brackish/freshwater to marine/brackish. The younger sandy and clayey sediments, formed about 7000–4500 BP at a depth of 16–3 m below present mean sea-level, are classified as ‘tidal channel’ and ‘interchannel’ deposits. It is argued, on the base of both diatom and non-diatom criteria, that the lower and middle parts of the interchannel deposits in the central area of the palaeo-tidal basin of North Holland were formed in a subtidal environment. The upper part of the interchannel deposits and the deposits at the fringe of the North Holland tidal basin were formed in the intertidal zone or, at the fringe of the basin, even in the supratidal zone. The salinity in the North Holland tidal basin during the sedimentation of the tidal channel and interchannel deposits was marine/brackish to marine. This study indicates that diatoms, besides their palaeoecological applications, have chronostratigraphical significance (on a regional scale). The diatomsCymatosira belgica andActinoptychus splendens appear to be a useful (eco)stratigraphical marker in the Holocene coastal deposits of The Netherlands and Belgium.  相似文献

Spatial and seasonal characteristics of phytoplankton in Tolo Harbour, Hong Kong, were studied by microscopic observation of phytoplankton samples and HPLC analysis of chemotaxonomic pigments. Diatoms dominated the phytoplankton. Common diatoms included Skeletonema costatum and species of Cerataulina, Leptocylindrus, Pseudo-nitzschia and Thalassiosira. Dinoflagellates occurred sporadically and mainly in the inner part of the harbour. The dinoflagellate Scrippsiella trochoidea was the causative organism for the red tide occurrences in March, April and September 2001. Significant positive correlations between fucoxanthin and diatoms and between peridinin and dinoflagellates suggested that fucoxanthin and peridinin were valuable chemotaxonomic markers for diatoms and dinoflagellates, respectively. Analysis of pigment ratios revealed that red tide events caused by dinoflagellates were marked by increase in the value of PERI:chl a and decrease in the value of FUCO:chl a. Increase in the value of FUCO:chl a also revealed the presence of a dense population of Pseudo-nitzschia that was not indicated by increase in chlorophyll a and fucoxanthin concentrations. Pigment analysis also revealed the presence of cyanobacteria, silicoflagellates, cryptophytes and green algae in the surface waters of Tolo Harbour.  相似文献

Heavy and constant inputs of freshwater into the north of the Berre lagoon over a period of more than 20 years, due to the diversion of the Durance River, resulted in the total disappearance of the macrobenthos at depths of more than 5 m. Only one community that had adapted well to the brackish conditions had survived on the thin coastal fringe. In 1990, abnormal drought conditions resulted in the interruption of freshwater inputs for a period of 7 months. A study of the changes in the benthic fauna subjected to these new ecological conditions, carried out during the second semester of 1990, shows that the prolonged stoppage of freshwater inputs was marked mainly by the appearance of marine species on the coastal fringe within the brackish community and by the colonization of the azoic bottoms by various macrobenthic species. This recruitment can be attributed to the stable conditions prevailing in the lagoon during this period, with no sharp fluctuations in salinity, no silt discharge and in particular an increase in the dissolved oxygen content in the water column. The colonization that was observed demonstrates that the chemical nature of the Berre lagoon sediments does not constitute a major limiting factor compared to the freshwater inputs.  相似文献

The invasive, euryhaline hydroid Cordylophora sp. is a colonial cnidarian present in both freshwater and brackish water habitats. Individuals contend with osmotic stress at the tissue and cellular level. It has been suggested that this hydroid's ability to expand its range of distribution by invading new habitats is due in large part to an ability to acclimate to new salinities. The purpose of this study was to assess colony growth and morphological changes at various salinities in freshwater and brackish genotypes of Cordylophora sp. Single genotypes from a known freshwater clade (0.5 psu; Des Plaines River) and a known brackish clade (16 psu; Napa River) were cultured and gradually transitioned to 12 different salinities ranging 0.5–22 psu, and we characterized the growth rates and hydranth morphological features at each salinity. Colony growth was optimal at 0.5 psu for the freshwater genotype and 10 psu for the brackish genotype. Changes in hydranth morphology in the freshwater genotype were primarily observed at higher salinities, while morphological changes in the brackish genotype primarily occurred at lower salinities. Our results for the brackish genotype generally concur with previous work, but this study is the first to document the response of a freshwater genotype of Cordylophora sp. to various salinities. Differences in growth between these two genotypes strongly support the previously proposed existence of multiple cryptic species. Furthermore, because this hydroid is quite prevalent in freshwater and brackish systems as a fouling organism, understanding the effects of various salinities on the successful establishment of Cordylophora sp. is an important contribution to the understanding of the ecophysiology and management of this invasive hydroid.  相似文献
