Blue Tits were the commonest and most frequent members of mixed-species insectivorous flocks during the winter at Wytham Wood, Oxford. Six common flocking species (Blue Tit, Longtailed Tit, Great Tit, Coal Tit, Marsh Tit and Golderest) made up nearly two-thirds of the birds in the study area. A tentative interspecific social dominance hierarehy was constructed: Great Tit > Blue Tit > Marsh Tit > Coal Tit > Long-tailed Tit and Goldcrest. Blue Tits permitted conspecifics to approach them more closely than did other flock members. Blue Tits most frequently led the flocks, but no more than would be predicted by their abundance. Great Tits, and Marsh Tits and Coal Tits to a lesser extent, defended territories during the winter. Two of the six common species frequented the inner parts of branches (Great Tit, Coal Tit), two the outer parts of branches (Blue Tit, Marsh Tit), and two the twigs (Long-tailed Tit, Goldcrest). Members of each of these species-pairs showed marked differences in height of foraging and/or species of tree frequented. Because of their abundance, the impact of Blue Tits outside of their most highly frequented foraging zones may exceed that of species concentrating in these other zones (e. g., twigs high in trees). The Coal Tit foraged most diversely, the Great Tit least diversely. Species that foraged diversely in one of the three foraging categories (species of tree, substrate, height) usually foraged less diversely than most other species in the other dimensions. Species usually overlapped least in the zones exploited (inner parts of branches, etc.). Great Tits overlapped with other species less than did any other common flock member, and Coal Tits were the next lowest in this regard.

The winter foraging behaviour of Willow Tit Parus montanuss, Coal Tit P. ater and Crested Tit P. cristatus was studied in several spruce-dominated, coniferous forest areas in which either Willow Tit alone, Willow Tit and Coal Tit, or all three species together were present. In the areas where Crested Tits were absent, Willow Tits foraged significantly more often in the outermost parts of spruce branches and less frequently on the parts of branches closer to the trunk, than in the area in which Crested Tits were present. In the area in which all three species were present, the same change in foraging pattern of Willow Tits was found in mixed flocks in which Crested Tits were lacking. The foraging pattern of Coal Tits was unaffected by the presence of members of either or both the other two tit species. It is suggested that the expansion of the feeding niche of Willow Tit in the absence of Crested Tit is a result of ecological release, due to a reduction in the degree of interspecific competition.

Advantages of social foraging of Willow Tits Parus montanus
OLAV HOGSTAD 《Ibis》1988,130(2):275-283
The mean number of Willow Tits Parus montanus in single-species flocks was significantly larger than in mixed-species flocks of Willow and Coal Tits P. ater. Both flock size and the tendency of Willow Tits to join mixed-species flocks were negatively correlated with ambient temperature, probably because each bird, when the metabolic rate of the birds increased, could allocate more time to foraging due to improved predator detection by many eyes. The vigilance time of Willow Tits decreased with flock size and was determined by the total number of individuals in a flock rather than by the number of Willow Tits in mixed-species flocks of Willow and Coal Tits.

Alarm calls of European and North African Coal Tits(Parus ater ater, P. ater atlas, P. ater ledouci) and Vigor's Black Crested Tit(P. melanolophus)
Summary The alarm call against nestpredators of European and North African Coal Tits are quite different (fig. a, c). European Coal Tits call like African Coal Tits only in situations of drastic excitement (one observation in the field). European Coal Tits and Vigor's Black Crested Tits, kept together with Coal Tits from Morocco in an aviary, used in alarm situations first their usual calls and then the calls of the North African subspecies (Abb. d). Apparently the African form of the alarm call is the older. The North African populations have lost the evolutionarity young form of the alarm call of the subgenusPeriparus.

Molecular sexing of birds has been possible for over a decade, but for practical reasons many studies still use biometric data for sex discrimination. In some species, the sexes are easy to distinguish but sexual dimorphism is often more subtle, requiring the use of statistical analyses of biometric measurements to discriminate sexes. These models are usually parameterized and validated using data from a limited number of sites and years. However, the resulting discriminant functions are often applied to other populations and periods. A crucial, but usually untested, assumption is that sexual dimorphism does not vary in time and space. Here we illustrate the consequences of violation of this assumption in Eurasian Oystercatchers Haematopus ostralegus , a species for which most studies have relied on biometric sexing. Using biometric data from captures of known-sex birds, we show that sexual dimorphism varied substantially in time and even reversed in some months and years. Furthermore, some biometric traits used in sexing changed gradually over time, causing a reduction in sexual dimorphism. We show that the consequences of this variation on sex discrimination in Oystercatchers are subtle and easily overlooked, but can result in inaccurate and strongly male- or female-biased sex-ratio estimates. We recommend that biometric sexing should be avoided in Oystercatchers unless specific calibration for each month, year and area is carried out. This recommendation also applies to other species where biometric traits may depend on environmental conditions. We argue that this condition might apply to many bird species and therefore advise caution when interpreting results based on biometric sex discrimination.

ABSTRACT

Capsule A combination of several biometric measures enables the reliable sexing of the European Bee-eater Merops apiaster, a species with subtle sex differences in plumage and morphometry.

Aims To explore variation in biometrics and their suitability to discriminate sex in adult European Bee-eaters Merops apiaster.

Methods We sampled populations of a long-distance migratory species with low sexual size dimorphism, the European Bee-eater Merops apiaster, from colonies in western Iberia (Portugal) and Central Europe (Germany) to investigate body size variation and derive population-specific and general sex discriminant functions.

Results Overall, male Bee-eaters were larger than females while Bee-eaters from Germany and Portugal did not differ in size, except for primary length and tail length. The best single measurement to discriminate sex was wing length for Portuguese birds and tail tip length for German birds, as in the combined dataset. Multivariate discriminant functions of head-bill, wing and tail tip lengths provided the highest discriminant accuracy, discriminating sex for 91% of the birds from Portugal, 96% from Germany and 94% when using the combined dataset. Nonetheless, the discriminant accuracy remained high in the functions using only two variables for Portugal (head-bill and tail tip 91%, head-bill and wing 88%, wing and tail tip 88%), Germany (head-bill and tail tip 95%, wing and tail tip 97%) and in the combined dataset (head-bill and tail tip 92%, wing and tail tip 93%).

Conclusions Population specific discriminant functions allow sexing of European Bee-eaters by morphometry with high degree of accuracy at least for Iberia and Central European populations. Such discriminant functions can be used to assign the sex of adult Bee-eaters reliably and swiftly while the bird is still in the hand, highlighting the potential of these functions for rapidly sexing species with low degrees of sexual size and plumage dimorphism.

Spring temperature and time of laying in tits
Summary The yearly variations in the start of laying by Great Tits(Parus major), Blue Tits(P. caeruleus), Marsh Tits(P. palustris) and Coal Tits(P. ater) are correlated with the spring temperatures (heat sums). The heat sums over a period of 4 weeks from mid March to mid April are of crucial importance for Great Tits, Blue Tits and Marsh Tits, whereas for Coal Tits only the heat sums of the 2 weeks from the beginning to the middle of April are decisive. The influence of temperature during 4 or 2 week periods, also explains why Great Tits, Blue Tits and Marsh Tits show similar variation in laying dates every year, whereas Coal Tits show the lowest correlation with other species of tits. Great Tits, Blue Tits and Marsh Tits only react to spring temperatures exceeding 6°C or 8°C. Coal Tits also seem to be susceptible to low temperatures. Beech(Fagus sylvatica), pine(Picea abies) and oak(Quercus robur) leafing is greatly influenced by spring temperatures (heat sums). Pine and oak react especially strongly to temperatures from the beginning to the middle of April. Temperature influence on beech leafing is most pronounced from mid March to mid April. The highest correlations occurred at the 6°C and 8°C threshold. There is firm statistical evidence of a connection between the 4 tit species' timing of laying and beech and pine leafing. Oak leafing is not correlated with the egg laying of 3 of the 4 tit species. The possibility that the sight of freshly opened leaves triggers egg laying must be ruled out, as tits start laying, with a few exceptions, before leafing starts. The start of laying seems for the tits to be best synchronized with the leafing of the most prevalent type of tree in a particular region.

Capsule: Blue Tits and Great Tits occupied different habitats within forests in Central Europe but their nestlings shared a similar diet.

Aims: To quantify the differences in offspring diet and territory habitat between Great Tits Parus major and Eurasian Blue Tits Cyanistes caeruleus in two European forests, and to test whether the ecological niches of the two species overlap.

Methods: Research was conducted on Great Tits and Eurasian Blue Tits, breeding in nest boxes in two forests near Kraków, Poland, during years: 2009, 2011 and 2012. Nine days after hatching, food items were collected from offspring using neck-collars. Habitat parameters surrounding each nest box were quantified.

Results: Great Tit territories were in old Oak-Hornbeam forest, whereas Blue Tits often nested in mixed forest. There were no significant differences between the two bird species in the variation in their caterpillar diets for which both species were highly variable. Great Tits collected more caterpillars of Noctuidae per nest than did Blue Tits in 2009 and 2011 in Niepo?omice Forest; Blue Tits collected more Tortricidae in 2011 and more spiders every year. In Krzyszkowice Forest in 2012, tits fed their nestlings in different periods and did not differ in the proportion of caterpillars. Habitat affected diet differently in each species.

Conclusion: Although Great Tits and Blue Tits occupied different territories in each forest and year of research, the diets of both species’ nestlings contained similar species of invertebrates. The overlaps of the birds’ environmental needs are specific at a local scale.

Capsule Birds selected younger woodland patches with fewer conifers and higher soil moisture content; within these patches, they selected areas with higher vegetation cover at 2–4 m, and less bracken.

Aims For an apparently stable population, to investigate habitat differences between occupied and unoccupied woodland patches and habitat selection within occupied woodlands.

Methods We surveyed woodland patches for breeding Willow Tits in April 2006 in an area with an apparently stable population. Habitat was measured at points spread throughout each woodland patch and at points where Willow Tits were located. We compared habitat between occupied and unoccupied sites. In addition, within occupied sites, we examined habitat differences between Willow Tit locations and the points spread throughout the wood.

Results We surveyed 65 woodland patches, of which 29 were occupied. Willow Tits were more likely to be found in deciduous woodland that was younger and had higher levels of soil moisture. Probability of occupancy fell from 60% for woods aged 20–25 years to only around 15–30% for woods aged over 80 years. Within occupied woods, Willow Tits were more likely to be found in areas with more vegetation cover at the 2–4 m level and in areas with less bracken.

Conclusions Habitat management for Willow Tits should involve provision of young woodland patches with moist soils. Changes to the age structure and/or the soil moisture content of woods may be implicated in the dramatic decline of Willow Tits in Britain.

Capsule Marsh Tits were strongly associated with both the amount and species diversity of woodland understorey; Blue Tits were associated with large trees and deadwood.

Aims To gather quantitative information on the habitat requirements of Marsh Tits, in comparison with those of Blue Tits, across a large number of sites in England and Wales, and secondly to evaluate the range of habitat conditions likely to encourage the presence, and increase the abundance of, each species.

Methods Counts of birds were made at each of 181 woods across England and Wales, and habitat data were collected from the same locations in each woodland. Marsh Tit and Blue Tit presence and abundance were related to habitat characteristics, interspecific competition and deer impact.

Results Shrub cover and species diversity were important for the presence and abundance of Marsh Tits, across their geographical range in Britain. Blue Tits were associated with large trees and deadwood.

Conclusion Our results support the hypothesis that changes in woodland management, leading to canopy closure and a decline in the understorey available, could have had an impact on Marsh Tits, and may have led to the observed population decline. These same changes were also consistent with population increase in Blue Tits.

According to the optimal body mass hypothesis, resident individuals, having priority of resource access and better knowledge of food availability in an area, should carry smaller fat reserves than transients whose resource predictability is lower. We tested this prediction in a free-living population of Coal Tits Parus ater in sub-alpine coniferous forest during three winters. We examined the role of residence status in determining the daily patterns of fat accumulation of individuals using time of day, temperature, season, year and body size as covariates. Only time of day, residence status and temperature significantly affected daily variation of fat score in Coal Tits. Fat scores were higher in transients than residents, although within residents, juveniles did not carry significantly more fat than adults. Our results show that fattening strategies are associated with residence status in the Coal Tit, in support of the hypothesis that transient individuals facing lower food predictability carry larger body fat reserves. The finding that within residents, patterns of fat accumulation did not differ between adults and juveniles, suggests that residence per se , involving higher food predictability, rather than age-related dominance or hoarding behaviour, determines fattening strategies in wild Coal Tits.

The incidence of nectar feeding by 2 pairs of Blue Tits Parus caeruleus was investigated in relation to the availability of nectar and alternative food. Nectar was not the most preferred food and the occurrence of nectar feeding did not correlate significantly with most measures of nectar availability, but the Blue Tits selected the most productive flowers. Nectar feeding frequently occurred when the preferred peanuts were unavailable due to interspecific competition. The nectar resource was under-utilized by the Blue Tits except at the beginning of the flowering period. Despite this, nectar was a highly profitable food source, yielding 0.33-0.38 kJ min?1 foraging. During the flowering period nectar was estimated to contribute up to 32.7% of the average daily metabolic rate (ADMR) of the male and up to 49.3% of the ADMR of the female, with means over the 2 years of 7.4% and 13.2% per day for the male and female, respectively. The importance of nectar in the ecology of Blue Tits is discussed.

Capsule All British Marsh Tits belong to subspecies Poecile palustris dresseri, being smaller than nominate P. p. palustris of central Europe.

Aims Determining the subspecies of Marsh Tit in Britain to test whether ssp. P. p. palustris occurs in northern England and Scotland, by assessing regional variation in size compared with central European birds.

Methods 1147 wing length and 250 tail length measurements from 953 Marsh Tits were compared between eight British locations to test for regional variation. Biometrics were compared between birds from Britain and six locations within the continental European range of ssp. palustris.

Results There was no regional variation in wing or tail lengths among British Marsh Tits, indicating that all resident birds belong to ssp. dresseri. There was no evidence supporting the existence of ssp. palustris in northern England. British birds were significantly smaller than those from continental Europe, with proportionately shorter tails, consistent across all age and sex classes.

Conclusion All British Marsh Tits should be considered as ssp. dresseri, with ssp. palustris being limited to continental Europe. With no evidence of regional variation in size within Britain, reliable sexing methods based on biometrics could be applied in demographic studies throughout the country.

The costs and benefits of dominance status have been investigated in the past and it has generally been reported that subdominant birds are at a nutritional disadvantage owing to their low dominance status. The nutritional condition of birds during winter can be important in determining their likelihood of survival. This is particularly so in small passerines that are sensitive to severe weather conditions. Ptilochronology is an accurate method used to produce a long-term estimate of body condition spanning the number of days that it takes to grow a new feather. Ptilochronology was used during this study to estimate the nutritional condition of Coal Tits Parus ater during one winter and how condition was affected by dominance status. Dominant Coal Tits produced poorer quality feathers, which they grew at a slower rate, than did subdominant conspecifics. This study highlights a nutritional cost to high dominance status that could have long-term consequences because the induced tail feathers will not be replaced for at least 5 months.

Sterile insect technique (SIT)-based pest control programs rely on the mass release of sterile insects to reduce the wild target population. In many cases, it is desirable to release only males. Sterile females may cause damage, e.g., disease transmission by mosquitoes or crop damage via oviposition by the Mediterranean fruit fly (Medfly). Also, sterile females may decrease the effectiveness of released males by distracting them from seeking out wild females. To eliminate females from the release population, a suitable sexual dimorphism is required. For several pest species, genetic sexing strains have been constructed in which such a dimorphism has been induced by genetics. Classical strains were based on the translocation to the Y chromosome of a selectable marker, which is therefore expressed only in males. Recently, several prototype strains have been constructed using sex-specific expression of markers or conditional lethal genes from autosomal insertions of transgenes. Here, we describe a novel genetic sexing strategy based on the use of Y-linked transgenes expressing fluorescent proteins. We demonstrate the feasibility of this strategy in a major pest species, Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann), and discuss the advantages and disadvantages relative to other genetic sexing methods and potential applicability to other species.

Capsule Blue Tits sang their dawn song in trees that provided greater concealment.

Aims To determine if dawn singing Blue Tits select trees that increase their concealment.

Methods We compared the timing of leaf growth initiation in Blue Tit song-post trees to the average timing of leaf growth initiation for other tree species within 25 m of the song-post.

Results Most Blue Tits (96%, n = 23) sang from tree species that begin leaf growth earlier than the average tree available within 25 m. If males singing in Hawthorns Crataegus monogyna were excluded, 92% (n = 13) sang from earlier leafing trees.

Conclusion Dawn singing Blue Tits select perches that offer greater concealment.

Capsule Mediterranean Great Tits showed a marked increase in levels of circulating carotenoids during moult and autumn.

Aims To study seasonal variation in plasma carotenoid content during a whole annual cycle for Great Tits Parus major inhabiting a Mediterranean woodland.

Methods We used a sample of 71 adult male Great Tits captured in NE Spain during a whole year. Data were organized into four seasons (winter, breeding, moult and autumn). We sampled blood to extract plasma. Carotenoid plasma concentrations were analysed by High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC).

Results Lutein and zeaxanthin content varied seasonally, with a marked increase in levels during moult and autumn. Within the moulting period, levels increased gradually as the season progressed. This pattern differed significantly from that previously described in northern European populations, where high values appear mainly in the breeding season. Carotenoid concentrations (lutein: 1.2?±?0.25, zeaxanthin: 0.07?±?0.03?µg mL?1) were also lower than in northern Europe.

Conclusion Mediterranean Great Tits show a very different pattern of circulating carotenoids and lower levels than northern European populations. The increasing pattern of carotenoid availability found within the moulting period raises the need to control for the effect of sampling date when analysing data on carotenoid concentrations at different times of year.

The evolutionary history of sexual selection in the geologic past is poorly documented based on quantification, largely because of difficulty in sexing fossil specimens. Even such essential ecological parameters as adult sex ratio (ASR) and sexual size dimorphism (SSD) are rarely quantified, despite their implications for sexual selection. To enable their estimation, we propose a method for unbiased sex identification based on sexual shape dimorphism, using size-independent principal components of phenotypic data. We applied the method to test sexual selection in Keichousaurus hui, a Middle Triassic (about 237 Ma) sauropterygian with an unusually large sample size for a fossil reptile. Keichousaurus hui exhibited SSD biased towards males, as in the majority of extant reptiles, to a minor degree (sexual dimorphism index −0.087). The ASR is about 60% females, suggesting higher mortality of males over females. Both values support sexual selection of males in this species. The method may be applied to other fossil species. We also used the Gompertz allometric equation to study the sexual shape dimorphism of K. hui and found that two sexes had largely homogeneous phenotypes at birth except in the humeral width, contrary to previous suggestions derived from the standard allometric equation.
