Community structure and pigment organisation of cyanobacteria-dominated microbial mats in Antarctica
Benthic microbial mat communities were sampled from 20 lakes, ponds and streams of the McMurdo Sound region, Antarctica. At least five distinct assemblages could be differentiated by their cyanobacterial species composition, pigment content and vertical structure. The most widely occurring freshwater communities were dominated by thin-trichome (0·5–3 µm) oscillatoriacean species that formed benthic films up to several millimetres thick. ‘Lift-off mats’ produced mucilaginous mats 1–5 cm thick at the surface and edge of certain ponds. Another group of oscillatoriacean communities was characteristic of hypersaline pond environments; these communities were dominated by species with thicker trichomes such as Oscillatoria priestleyi. Black mucilaginous layers of Nostoc commune were widely distributed in aquatic and semi-aquatic habitats. Dark brown sheath pigmentation was also characteristic of less cohesive mats and crusts dominated by Pleurocapsa, Gloeocapsa and Calothrix. High performance liquid chromatography analysis of the lipophilic pigments showed that the upper region of most of the Antarctic mats was enriched in sheath pigments (scytonemin) and/or certain carotenoids such as myxoxanthophyll and canthaxanthin. Most of the chlorophyll a (Chla), as well as phycocyanin, β-carotene and echinenone, was located in the lower strata of the mat profiles. In many of these communities most of the photosynthetic biomass occurred in a ‘deep Chla maximum’ that was well protected from short-wavelength radiation by the surface layer of light-screening pigments. 相似文献

Chrysochromulina brachycylindra sp. nov. is described by means of transmission electron microscopy of shadowcast whole mounts prepared from wild material collected from Finnish coastal waters. The suhspherical cell carries plate-scales and cylinder-scales. The scales are large enough to render possible a light microscopical identification of this species from dry preparations. Based on scale morphology it is evident that C. brachycylindra is closely related to C. pachycylindra Manton, Oates & Course. In addition to the findings from the Baltic Sea the new species is also reported from the Andaman Sea, SW Thailand. 相似文献

The fine structure of the zoospores of Urospora penicilliformis (Roth) Aresch. (Chlorophyceae) is described. Of special interest is the flagellar apparatus. The proximal part of each of the 4 flagella is ribbon-shaped and contains nine wings attached to the peripheral double tubules. The flagellar root system originates from the flagellar bases and includes striated fibrous roots, passing close to the nucleus, and cruciate nine-stranded microtubular roots along the four corners of the cell. The Golgi bodies produce numerous vesicles, concentrating apically in the cell; they are presumed to be of importance for the attachment of the zoospore. 相似文献

An orange pigmented bacterium, S1, was isolated from a cyanobacterial mat sample collected in the vicinity of Schirmacher Oasis, Maitri, the Indian station, in Antarctica. The bacterium is Gram-positive and possesses all the characteristics of the genus Planococcus. It is non-sporulating, motile and has A4alpha type peptidoglycan, MK-7 and MK-8 as the major menaquinones and anteiso-C(15:0) as the major fatty acid. Based on the phylogenetic characteristics, the bacterium S1 is identified as a close relative of Planococcus citreus with which it shares 98.12% similarity at the 16S rRNA gene level but exhibits a low similarity of 52% at the whole genome level. Apart from the above major differences, S1 also exhibits phenotypic differences with Planococcus citreus and other members of the genus Planococcus. Based on these differences, the bacterium S1 is identified as a new species of the genus Planococcus for which the name Planococcus maitriensis is proposed. A new, cryophilic species of the Chlamydomonadaceae, Chloromonas rubroleosa, is described from continental Antarctica. The species is characterised by a bimamillate papilla, four contractile vacuoles, numerous small discoid chloroplasts and an abundance of red-pigmented oil droplets. The local distribution of the species and its habitat conditions are described. The cells are susceptible to temperatures above 10°C and, unexpectedly, to subfreezing temperatures. The species has been isolated into pure culture and is currently maintained at the Australian Antarctic Division. 相似文献

The many glacier meltwater streams of southern Victoria Land flow through catchments where life forms are almost entirely microbial. Allochthonous inputs of nitrogen from two study streams near McMurdo Sound were derived mostly from the melting glaciers (ca. 100–200 mg N m–3) with some originating from N2-fixation by heterocystous cyanobacteria (max. 939 mg N m–2 year–1). Thirty to fifty per cent of the glacier derived N was dissolved organic N and a major proportion of this was identified as urea N which was utilised by the rich algal and cyanobacterial mats in the streams. A nutrient budget for Fryxell Stream was estimated, quantifying uptake of urea-N and dissolved inorganic N and the release of dissolved organic (non urea) and particulate N by the stream communities. An index of in-stream nitrogen processing, the Net Uptake Length Constant in these streams was compared with that from temperate climates and was found to be similar. Despite the influence of low temperatures on microbial activity (mean daily water temperature = 5 °C) nutrient removal rates from these antarctic streams are high because of the large standing stock of microbial biomass there. 相似文献

Nine psychrotolerant bacteria were isolated from fast ice in the middle of Geologie Archipelago, Adelie Land, Antarctica and were categorized into two groups, based on their SDS-PAGE profiles. Representatives from each of the two groups, namely strains DD 48T and SJ 14T exhibited phenotypic and chemotaxonomic characteristics confirming to the genus Psychrobacter. The 16S rRNA gene sequence indicated that the two isolates are closely related to each other and to the already reported fifteen species of Psychrobacter. Detailed studies on the phenotypic characteristics, chemotaxonomic properties and phylogenetic analysis of strains DD 48T and SJ 14T indicated that they are distinctly different from each other and the reported species of Psychrobacter. At the DNA-DNA hybridisation level, the two species exhibit less than 70% similarity. Thus, strains DD 48T and SJ 14T are identified as new species of the genus Psychrobacter for which the names Psychrobacter salsus sp. nov. and Psychrobacter adeliensis sp. nov. respectively are proposed. 相似文献

Abstract Cordylecladia guiryi sp. nov. is described from the Mediterranean Sea, after a comparison of habit, morphology and reproduction with C. erecta, the only species of the genus. The species is characterized by the small dimension of its axes which arise single from the basal crust and by its habitat, growing epiphytically on Posidonia oceanica Delile leaves. Tetrasporangial and gametangial plants as well as the development of the carposporophyte have been studied in detail. The carpogonial branch is 4-celled and it is formed on a supporting cell that also bears a 3-celled auxiliary branch. Tetrasporangia are cruciately divided. The reproductive details confirm Sparling's view about the great variation existing in the organization of the procarp in members of this order. 相似文献

In this study we analysed three bacterial strains coded L10.10T, A4R1.5 and A4R1.12, isolated in the course of a study of quorum-quenching bacteria occurring in Antarctic soil. The 16S rRNA gene sequence was identical in the three strains and showed 99.7% pairwise similarity with respect to the closest related species Pseudomonas weihenstephanensis WS4993T. Therefore, the three strains were classified within the genus Pseudomonas. Analysis of housekeeping genes (rpoB, rpoD and gyrB) sequences showed similarities of 84-95% with respect to the closest related species of Pseudomonas, confirming its phylogenetic affiliation. The ANI values were less than 86% to the closest related species type strains. The respiratory quinone is Q9. The major fatty acids are C16:0, C16:1 ω7c/ C16:1 ω6c in summed feature 3 and C18:1 ω7c / C18:1 ω6c in summed feature 8. The strains are oxidase- and catalase-positive. Growth occurs at 4–30 °C, and at pH 4.0–10. The DNA G+C content is 58.2–58.3 mol %. The combined genotypic, phenotypic and chemotaxonomic data support the classification of strains L10.10T, A4R1.5 and A4R1.12 into a novel species of Pseudomonas, for which the name P. versuta sp. nov. is proposed. Abstract The effects of tropical solar radiation on the motility of the cyanobacteria Anabaena variabilis, Oscillatoria tenuis and two strains of Phormidium uncinatum were studied in Ghana (4.30°N). The percentages of motile filaments were drastically reduced by unfiltered solar radiation. Covering the organisms with various long pass or band pass filters (WG320, GG395 or UG5) revealed that the UV-B, UV-A and visible light components of the solar spectrum were all effective in impairing motility in these organisms. The sensitivity of phytoplankton in Loch Leven (U.K.) to changes in nutrient load and water temperature 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
1. Loch Leven is a shallow, eutrophic lake in Scotland, U.K. It has experienced much change over the 30 years that it has been studied; this has primarily been due to reduced nutrient loads to the lake through active catchment management. Its recovery has been slow and, therefore, we used a phytoplankton community model (PROTECH) to test its sensitivity to changing nutrient loads and water temperature.
2. PROTECH was initialized to simulate the observed phytoplankton community in 1995 and was then repeatedly run through a combination of step-wise changes in water temperature and nutrient load (two treatments were simulated for nutrient load: one changing both nitrate and phosphorus, and one changing just phosphorus). The effect on total chlorophyll- a concentration, cyanobacteria abundance and phytoplankton diversity was examined.
3. Whilst changes in temperature had little effect, variations in the nutrient load produced a range of responses. Increasing only the phosphorus load caused a large increase in Anabaena abundance and total chlorophyll- a concentration. However, the opposite response was recorded when nitrate load was changed as well, with Anabaena increasing its biomass under reduced nutrient load scenarios.
4. The key factor determining the type of response appeared to be nitrogen availability. Anabaena , a nitrogen fixer, could exploit the phosphorus resource of Loch Leven under limiting nitrogen conditions, allowing it to dominate under most of the scenarios tested apart from those supplying extra nitrogen to the lake. The model predictions agree with the observed data, which show that Anabaena continues to dominate the summer phytoplankton bloom in Loch Leven despite the considerable reduction in phosphorus supply from the catchment. The glacier-fed ephemeral streams of southern Victoria Land (ca. 78° S, 64° E) are colonised by an epilithon dominated by cyanobacterial mats and films. Biomass levels are often high (> 15 µg Chl a · cm–2). The mat structure, pigment and photosynthetic characteristics of these communities have been investigated on site. The mats in high light environments have a layered structure with high levels of light shielding accessory pigments in the upper layers and elevated chlorophyll a and phycocyanin concentrations in the lower layers. Photosynthetic rates per unit area (0.4–3.5 µg C · cm– 2 · hr–1) fall within the range reported for temperate communities. P vs I curves were used to separate high, intermediate and low light communities. Ik values for high light communities were at or lower than PAR recorded at midnight in the polar midsummer (ca 100 µ E m–2 · s–1). We did not detect photoinhibitory responses at the midday light intensities. In situ continuous nutrient enrichment experiments failed to demonstrate N or P limitation to pigment content or photosynthetic rates. We suggest that the growth of these communities is controlled by factors other than light and nutrients. 相似文献
