Organic material which may be several layers thick has been found beneath the siliceous cell wall of the marine centric diatom Melosira nummuloides (Dillw.) C. Ag. This supports the findings of Liebisch (1928, 1929). The organic component, thought to be polysaccharide, is deposited outside the plasmalemma after the siliceous component has been laid down. It exists as two distinct entities, one associated with each valve.  相似文献

Two species of the marine sand-dwelling dinoflagellate genus Cabra were found in epiphytic assemblages on macrophytes from Peter the Great Bay of the Sea of Japan: the type species of the genus Cabra matta and a new species Cabra levis sp. nov. The new species possesses all characteristics of the genus, e.g. the same plate formula (APC 3′ 1a 5′′ 3c 6s 5′′′ 1′′′′), and is 29.0–42.0 µm long and 24.6–37.8 µm deep. It differs from other Cabra species by its more rounded shape, in lacking a spine on the dorsal side of the cell and a pointed flange on plate 1′′′, in having nearly smooth thecal plates as well as by the position of the epithecal plates. Some details of the sulcal construction of Cabra species are described for the first time. Cabra levis and C. matta were found on macrophytes throughout the year. As both species occurred more often on macrophytes than in near-shore sand, they are epiphytic rather than sand-dwelling.  相似文献

An undescribed marine prasinophyte, Pyramimonas tychotreta, sp. nov., was isolated from a water sample collected near the ice edge in the Weddell Sea (Antarctica) and is characterized by means of light and electron microscopy. This is the second described Antarctic species in the genus and it possesses a cell ultrastructure typical for members of the subgenus Vestigifera McFadden. The quadriflagellated cells measure 8–12 μm in length and 6–7 μm in width and are equipped with seven types of organic scales that cover the flagella and cell body. The scale floor of the box scales is ornamented by quadrants of parallel striations running perpendicular to one another. The scale floor is further characterized by a number of randomly positioned perforations. The wall of the box scales may be solid or possess up to five perforations. The base of the crown scales is square with rounded corners. It is formed of two crossed ribs, the extremities of which are interconnected by a peripheral rib. Four upright arms, attached to the peripheral rib in positions slightly offset from its junction with the cross ribs, join up with the distal extremity of a central upright strut. Each arm possesses two spines. The limuloid scales are cross‐striped by 10–12 ribs. Some details of the flagellar apparatus are briefly reported. Pyramimonas tychotreta is compared with other species of the genus. Experiments were conducted to study the response of growth rate to variations in temperature and salinity in the clonal culture. The best growth rate (0.45 divisions·24 h ? 1) was found at 4.6° C; growth ceased at temperatures in excess of 12° C. Growth in salinities ranging from 15 to 35 psu was similar, but was arrested at 10 psu. These studies suggest that P. tychotreta as a cold stenotherm and euryhaline taxon. New observations are presented on the geographic distribution of previously described species of Pyramimonas Schmarda from the Northern Foxe Basin, Canada.  相似文献

The cosmopolitan dinoflagellate genus Alexandrium, and especially the A. tamarense species complex, contain both toxic and nontoxic strains. An understanding of their evolution and paleogeography is a necessary precursor to unraveling the development and spread of toxic forms. The inclusion of more strains into the existing phylogenetic trees of the Alexandrium tamarense species complex from large subunit rDNA sequences has confirmed that geographic distribution is consistent with the molecular clades but not with the three morphologically defined species that constitute the complex. In addition, a new clade has been discovered, representing Mediterranean nontoxic strains. The dinoflagellates fossil record was used to calibrate a molecular clock: key dates used in this calibration are the origins of the Peridiniales (estimated at 190 MYA), Gonyaulacaceae (180 MYA), and Ceratiaceae (145 MYA). Based on the data set analyzed, the origin of the genus Alexandrium was estimated to be around late Cretaceous (77 MYA), with its earliest possible origination in the mid Cretaceous (119 MYA). The A. tamarense species complex potentially diverged around the early Neogene (23 MYA), with a possible first appearance in the late Paleogene (45 MYA). A paleobiogeographic scenario for Alexandrium is based on (1) the calculated possible ages of origination for the genus and its constituent groups; (2) paleogeographic events determined by plate movements, changing ocean configurations and currents, as well as climatic fluctuations; and (3) the present geographic distribution of the various clades of the Alexandrium tamarense species complex.  相似文献

Studies considering the biology and ecology of the toxic bloom‐forming species, Alexandrium pseudogonyaulax, are rare. Our results highlight five features not described before in A. pseudogonyaulax life cycle: (i) A. pseudogonyaulax gametes showed two modes of conjugation, anisogamy and isogamy, (ii) sexual conjugation occurs either in the dark or in the light phase by engulfment or a fusion process, (iii) the presence of planozygote and newly formed cysts in monoclonal culture suggests homothallism, (iv) newly formed cysts have very dark vesicular content and are mostly unparatabulated when observed under light microscope and (v) natural resting cysts are able to give either a planomeiocyte or two vegetative cells. Cyst viability was enhanced after 5 months of cold storage (4°C), with excystment rate reaching 97% after 3 d of incubation. Excystment rate was highest (43%–79%) in Enriched Natural Sea Water diluted culture medium, whereas few germling cells were able to survive without the culture medium (0%–13%). Salinity‐irradiance experiments revealed that the highest cell concentrations occur at high irradiances for all the tested salinities. Vegetative growth rates generally increased with increasing irradiance, and were less dependent on salinity variations. The relatively low growth rate, low cell densities in the laboratory, and the notable capacity of producing cysts along growth phases of A. pseudogonyaulax could explain the occurrence of high resting cysts densities in the sediment of Bizerte lagoon and the relatively low abundances of vegetative cells in the water column.  相似文献

Environmental variables such as temperature, salinity, and irradiance are significant drivers of microalgal growth and distribution. Therefore, understanding how these variables influence fitness of potentially toxic microalgal species is particularly important. In this study, strains of the potentially harmful epibenthic dinoflagellate species Coolia palmyrensis, C. malayensis, and C. tropicalis were isolated from coastal shallow water habitats on the east coast of Australia and identified using the D1‐D3 region of the large subunit (LSU) ribosomal DNA (rDNA). To determine the environmental niche of each taxon, growth was measured across a gradient of temperature (15–30°C), salinity (20–38), and irradiance (10–200 μmol photons · m?2 · s?1). Specific growth rates of Coolia tropicalis were highest under warm temperatures (27°C), low salinities (ca. 23), and intermediate irradiance levels (150 μmol photons · m?2 · s?1), while C. malayensis showed the highest growth at moderate temperatures (24°C) and irradiance levels (150 μmol photons · m?2 · s?1) and growth rates were consistent across the range of salinity levels tested (20–38). Coolia palmyrensis had the highest growth rate of all species tested and favored moderate temperatures (24°C), oceanic salinity (35), and high irradiance (>200 μmol photons · m?2 · s?1). This is the first study to characterize the environmental niche of species from the benthic harmful algal bloom genus Coolia and provides important information to help define species distributions and inform risk management.  相似文献

SUMMARY 1. Growth, reproduction and life‐history parameters were measured for three cladoceran species from a small south‐eastern wetland, U.S.A. Simocephalus serrulatus, Diaphanosoma brachyurum and Scapholeberis mucronata juveniles were reared at temperatures between 10 and 25 °C on natural food resources. 2. Growth rate increased with temperature and decreased with individual size for all three species. Maximum somatic growth rate was higher for Simocephalus (49–72% day?1) and Diaphanosoma (21–91% day?1) than for Scapholeberis (11–45% day?1). Multiple regression equations were developed which predict temperature‐ and mass‐specific growth rates for each species. 3. Scapholeberis egg production was positively related to temperature; however, maximum egg production occurred at intermediate temperatures for Simocephalus and Diaphanosoma. Mean cumulative egg production was higher for Scapholeberis (28–92 eggs per female) than for Simocephalus (18–25 eggs per female) and Diaphanosoma (1–41 eggs per female), and was related to differences in reproductive strategy and survival. 4. Survival was inversely related to temperature in most cases. For all three cladocerans, the intrinsic rate of increase (r) and net reproductive rate (R0) increased with temperature, whereas generation time (G) decreased. Greater egg production by Scapholeberis compared with the other two cladocerans was consistent with higher R0 values for Scapholeberis at any given temperature. Although r was very similar among species, G was typically longer for Scapholeberis than for Simocephalus and Diaphanosoma. 5. This analysis provides basic information about the population parameters of these coexisting wetland species, and the growth rate models can be applied to field data to determine production dynamics.  相似文献

Four sand‐dwelling species of the marine dinoflagellate genus Sinophysis, including one new species, have been examined from intertidal and subtidal sand, from the Sea of Japan. The morphological features of these species were observed by light and scanning electron microscopy. Sinophysis minima sp. nov. is flattened laterally and is 17.5–35.0 μm in length and 15.0–27.5 μm in depth, with a length/depth ratio of 1.1–1.4, an epitheca depth of 5.0–7.5 μm, and a sulcus length of about three‐quarters the hypotheca length. Sinophysis ebriola (Herdman) Balech, Sinophysis grandis Hoppenrath and Sinophysis stenosoma Hoppenrath were recorded for the first time in the seas of Russia. Sinophysis stenosoma is the most common species in the Sea of Japan. All species usually occurred together in the region investigated. Xestoleberis hanaii Ishizaki, 1968 is one of the most abundant species on the Japanese coast and can be collected in all seasons from intertidal calcareous algae on rocky shores. Several characteristics make this species a suitable `experimental animal' in the laboratory: (1) adaptability to artificial environments (room temperature, petri dish, artificial seawater, single cultured food-type), (2) high fertility (active copulatory behaviour, egg brooding within the carapace, high egg productivity) and (3) rapid growth rate. Females mate after the final moult (when the reach sexual maturity); oviposition of fertilized eggs takes place over a period of four days after the final moult. Eggs (about 40 in total) are laid a few at a time in the postero-dorsal brood space of the carapace; they hatch in about 9 d as A-7 instars which are then discharged from the brood space within a day or two. Seven moults take place within the next approx. 33 (female) or 39 (male) days to reach adulthood. Adult females live for about 18 weeks and may repeat the reproductive cycle three times; adult males live for about 14 weeks.  相似文献

The tolerance of adult specimens of Dugesia lugubris and D. polychroa for 13 different chlorinities ranging from 15.0–3.8 and for two temperatures, viz. 4 and 23 °C, was tested.At chlorinities of 7.5 and lower, the survival time of both species was considerably longer than at higher chlorinities (a few hours at 7.5, one to several days at 6.6 and lower concentrations). It is assumed that this is determined by the osmoregulatory capacity of the planarians.It was found that at low chlorinities combined with a high temperature D. polychroa survived longer than D. lugubris, while at the same chlorinities the opposite was true for a low temperature. The effect of temperature on survival at low chlorinities was more drastic for D. lugubris than for D. polychroa.The results correlate with data on the distribution of both species in The Netherlands. Outside areas with an average chlorinity below 2 the two species were rarely found.  相似文献

金钟藤为海南原产,近20年来种群数量迅速增多,并对许多次生林、人工林和灌木林造成严重危害。金钟藤种群成灾的生境或区域有不同的光照和水分条件,而灾变种往往通过较高的表型可塑性来适应多样的生境条件。为揭示土著灾变种金钟藤适应多样生境条件的生理生态机制,本文通过温室盆栽试验研究了不同光照和水分条件对金钟藤生长、形态性状及其可塑性、化感作用的影响。结果表明,高光干旱条件下金钟藤生物量有所降低。在低光下,金钟藤增加了茎总长度、比茎长、比叶面积,降低了根冠比。这些形态性状的表型可塑性指数平均为0.36。高光干旱生长条件下,金钟藤叶片水浸液对生菜种子萌发和芽长生长的抑制作用较低,可能是因为在这种胁迫条件下,金钟藤降低了对竞争(化感)的资源投入。形态性状的可塑性可能促进了金钟藤在林下低光环境下更好的捕获光能和快速生长至冠层,而化感作用的可塑性说明金钟藤可能通过调节对竞争(化感)的资源投入来适应多样的水分条件。金钟藤在形态性状和化感作用方面的可塑性可能是其适应多样生境条件并爆发成灾的生理生态机制之一。  相似文献

Fistulifera sp. strain JPCC DA0580, a marine pennate diatom, contains extremely high levels of intracellular triglyceride and has been suggested as a promising source of feedstock for biodiesel fuels. JPCC DA0580 was isolated from a mangrove swamp located in Sumiyo Bay below the mouths of the Sumiyo and Yakugachi Rivers in Amami‐Ohshima, Kagoshima, Japan. In this study, the morphology and the 18S rDNA sequence of JPCC DA0580 were compared with those of other Fistulifera strains. JPCC DA0580 possesses morphological characters of the genus Fistulifera, namely lightly silicified frustules, a distinct median costa (raphe sternum), and a wart‐like central pore (fistula). Morphometric analysis revealed that JPCC DA0580 differs from other Fistulifera species by the presence of a valve with coarser striation and coarser areolation. On the basis of 18S rDNA phylogeny, JPCC DA0580 formed a well‐supported clade with other members of the Fistulifera species complex, although the number of nucleotide substitutions was highest in JPCC DA0580. Our results led us to propose the taxonomic name Fistulifera solaris sp. nov. for JPCC DA0580.  相似文献

Chaetoceros convolutus and C. concavicornis have been implicated in the death of salmon in netpens in the Pacific Northwest by damaging the salmon's gills. To better understand how environmental factors affect the distribution of these two species, the interacting effects of light, temperature and salinity on growth rate were examined by growing these species under a range of temperatures (4–18 °C), light (10–175 μmol photon m−2 s−1) and salinities (10–30‰). For C. convolutus, the growth rate showed a hyperbolic relationship with irradiance at 8, 14 and 18 °C and light saturation occurred at 9, 14 and 20 μmol photon mt s−1 respectively. At 4 °C for C. convolutus and 8 °C for C. concavicornis, cells grew at μmax, even at the lowest irradiances tested (10 μmol photon m−2 s−1). For C. convolutus, the amount of light required to saturate growth rate increased with temperature in an approximately linear fashion. The Q10 was 1.88, calculated by averaging over both species. C. concavicornis was the more euryhaline species growing at salinities as low as 17.5‰, while C. convolutus grew only at 25‰ and above.  相似文献

Drag force was measured on individual specimens of Hedophyllum sessile in a variable-speed flow tank. Those from sheltered localities, which are broad, bullate blades, experience greater drag at a given water velocity than ones from localities more exposed to the action of waves, which have smooth, deeply dissected blades. All specimens rearranged their blades as water velocity increased, resulting in a decrease in effective drag at higher water speeds, but individuals with smooth, dissected blades assumed a more compact shape at high current speeds and thus reduced their effective drag over that of broad-bladed individuals at the same speed. In habitats chronically exposed to strong wave action, drag reduction may be an important survival mechanism; in calm habitats the turbulence induced by lack of such streamlining may enhance mixing of the water in the immediate vicinity of a plant.  相似文献

Abstract. The ecological roles of small (1–1000 mg) predators in benthic marine systems are poorly understood. We investigated the natural history and predatory impact of one group of such mesopredators—larvae of dipteran flies in the genus Oedoparena —which prey on intertidal barnacles. We 1) quantified patterns of larval Oedoparena distribution and abundance in the Northwest Straits of Washington State, USA, 2) determined larval physiological tolerance limits in the laboratory, and 3) conducted a manipulative field experiment to assess the role of microhabitat temperature on predation rates in Oedoparena . Members of Oedoparena in Washington are univoltine, with peak larval abundance in late spring and early summer. Infestation frequencies in the barnacles Balanus glandula and Chthamalus dalli were as high as 22% and 35%, respectively. In laboratory studies, larvae of O . glauca were able to tolerate temperatures up to 37°C; however, this temperature is often exceeded in high intertidal habitats. In a field manipulation using experimental shades, we demonstrate that the alleviation of physiological stress greatly increased the abundance of larvae of Oedoparena spp. As a result of increased larval densities under shades, adult B. glandula mortality increased from 5% to nearly 30%, and C. dalli mortality increased from less than 20% to over 60%. Because high intertidal barnacles serve as food and habitat for a diverse array of species, Oedoparena spp. have the potential to play a major role in structuring high intertidal communities, particularly in cooler microhabitats.  相似文献

In Crawford Lake, a small meromictic water body in southern Ontario, Canada, the life cycles of planktonic Chaoborus flavicans and C. punctipennis were out of phase by about two months, the former pupating from mid May through mid June and the latter from July through September. C. flavicans possibly produced a second annual generation. Fourth instars of both species were strong diel migrators and occupied similar strata at most times. C. punctipennis fourth instar diet consisted almost entirely of rotifers. C. flavicans ate rotifers but fed heavily also on daphnids in May and August. C. punctipennis fourth instars showed little growth until early spring, possibly owing to a sparseness of rotifers, then grew rapidly until pupation. C. flavicans had a slow, but relatively constant growth rate at all times during the open water season, presumably because its greater mouth gape allowed it a wider range of food items.  相似文献

Abstract Erodium cicutarium (L.) L'Hérit. ex Aiton (Geraniaceae) from temperate Mediterranean Eurasia is naturalized across large areas of arid and semi-arid Australia to which Erodium crinitum Carolin is native. plant size, leaf and bud numbers and fruit/plant biomass ratio were significantly lower under drought, flower and fruit number, fruit size and total mass were unaffected. In contrast, E. crinitum was largely unaffected by the drought conditions, showing only an increase in the fruit/plant biomass ratio.  相似文献

The effects of hybridization and introzgression were assessed among two naturally hybridizing bivalve molluscs (the mussels Mytilus edulis and M. galloprovincialis) from western Europe to estimate how disruptive these processes are to developmental stability (measured in terms of morphological variability). Ten shell traits were measured for 392 mussels from four allopatric populations (two each of At. edulis and At. galloprovincialis) and two hybrid populations. An index of variability (defined as Zi= |yi–yi where y; is the population mean of the length-standardized trait, and yi is the individualcar;s length-standardized trait value) was constructed for each trait, and for the sum of the traits. The hybrid populations did not exhibit greater mean variability than the allopatric populations for any of the indices. Upon pooling, the hybrid populations had significantly lower variability than the pooled M. edulis populations and the pooled M. galloprovincialis populations in two analyses, and had similar means in the remaining nine analyses. Where significant differences existed, the pooled M. galloprovincialis had lower levels of mean trait variability than the pooled M. edulis. Among the two hybrid populations, the putative Fl hybrids and backcross individuals exhibited means of trait variability which were similar to those of the parental types. Thus, extensive hybridization and introgression do not adversely affect developmental stability among these mussel populations. There was a strong significant correlation between the ranking of indices (based on the amount of variability) across all six populations, indicating that a large genetic component determines the measured morphological variability. It is concluded that the genes or gene complexes which control morphological development in M. edulis and M. galloprovincialis arc very similar, providing further evidence of the close evolutionary relatedness of these mussel taxa.  相似文献
