Breathing pattern and steady-state CO2 ventilatory response during mouth breathing were compared with those during nose breathing in nine healthy adults. In addition, the effect of warming and humidification of the inspired air on the ventilatory response was observed during breathing through a mouthpiece. We found the following. 1) Dead space and airway resistance were significantly greater during nose than during mouth breathing. 2) The slope of CO2 ventilatory responses did not differ appreciably during the two types of breathing, but CO2 occlusion pressure response was significantly enhanced during nose breathing. 3) Inhalation of warm and humid air through a mouthpiece significantly depressed CO2 ventilation and occlusion pressure responses. These results fit our observation that end-tidal PCO2 was significantly higher during nose than during mouth breathing. It is suggested that a loss of nasal functions, such as during nasal obstruction, may result in lowering of CO2, fostering apneic spells during sleep.  相似文献

The metabolism and action of insulin and glucagon were investigated in goats during mid lactating (50 days postpartum) and during the dry period. The animals were fed hay and concentrate during lactation (1:1) and only hay during dry period. Pulse doses of unlabelled insulin and glucagon were injected intravenously. The disappearance of insulin from the circulation was faster during lactation than during dry period; the metabolic clearance rate of insulin was significantly increased during lactation. In contrast, the kinetic parameters of glucagon disappearance were very similar during the two periods. Basal plasma hormones (i.e. before hormone injection) were higher during lactation than during dry period; the molar ratio insulin:glucagon was left unchanged. The increase in plasma insulin following glucagon-stimulated hyperglycaemia was similar during the two periods. The ability of insulin to elicit a decrease in blood glucose was markedly impaired during lactation when compared to dry period. In contrast the ability of glucagon to increase blood glucose was slightly improved during lactation. Those endocrine changes could be related to the effect of both lactation and diet.  相似文献

Reactivations of waking experiences during sleep have been considered fundamental neural processes for memory consolidation. In songbirds, evidence suggests the importance of sleep-related neuronal activity in song system motor pathway nuclei for both juvenile vocal learning and maintenance of adult song. Like those in singing motor nuclei, neurons in the basal ganglia nucleus Area X, part of the basal ganglia-thalamocortical circuit essential for vocal plasticity, exhibit singing-related activity. It is unclear, however, whether Area X neurons show any distinctive spiking activity during sleep similar to that during singing. Here we demonstrate that, during sleep, Area X pallidal neurons exhibit phasic spiking activity, which shares some firing properties with activity during singing. Shorter interspike intervals that almost exclusively occurred during singing in awake periods were also observed during sleep. The level of firing variability was consistently higher during singing and sleep than during awake non-singing states. Moreover, deceleration of firing rate, which is considered to be an important firing property for transmitting signals from Area X to the thalamic nucleus DLM, was observed mainly during sleep as well as during singing. These results suggest that songbird basal ganglia circuitry may be involved in the off-line processing potentially critical for vocal learning during sensorimotor learning phase.  相似文献

We assessed the seasonal variations in the effects of hypercarbia (3 or 5% inspired CO2) on cardiorespiratory responses in the bullfrog Rana catesbeiana at different temperatures (10, 20 and 30 degrees C). We measured breathing frequency, blood gases, acid-base status, hematocrit, heart rate, blood pressure and oxygen consumption. At 20 and 30 degrees C, the rate of oxygen consumption had a tendency to be lowest during winter and highest during summer. Hypercarbia-induced changes in breathing frequency were proportional to body temperature during summer and spring, but not during winter (20 and 30 degrees C). Moreover, during winter, the effects of CO2 on breathing frequency at 30 degrees C were smaller than during summer and spring. These facts indicate a decreased ventilatory sensitivity during winter. PaO2 and pHa showed no significant change during the year, but PaCO2 was almost twice as high during winter than in summer and spring, indicating increased plasma bicarbonate levels. The hematocrit values showed no significant changes induced by temperature, hypercarbia or season, indicating that the oxygen carrying capacity of blood is kept constant throughout the year. Decreased body temperature was accompanied by a reduction in heart rate during all four seasons, and a reduction in blood pressure during summer and spring. Blood pressure was higher during winter than during any other seasons whereas no seasonal change was observed in heart rate. This may indicate that peripheral resistance and/or stroke volume may be elevated during this season. Taken together, these results suggest that the decreased ventilatory sensitivity to hypercarbia during winter occurs while cardiovascular parameters are kept constant.  相似文献

The kinetics of endogenous urea were compared during the last month of pregnancy, lactation, and a nonpregnant, nonlactating control period in Sardi sheep kept on a constant feed level. Urea entry rate estimated by injections of [14C]urea rose by 36% during pregnancy. Renal urea excretion was reduced by 40% during pregnancy and by 28% during lactation. Consequently, fractional urea recycling was greater during pregnancy and, to some extent, during lactation than during the control period. In a second series of experiments, glomerular filtration rate increased by 48% and urea filtration rate rose by 17% during pregnancy. During lactation, both glomerular filtration rate and urea filtration rate were close to control levels. It appears that the decreased renal urea excretion during pregnancy and lactation was due mainly to increased tubular reabsorption of urea. Rumination time increased by 15% during pregnancy. Rumen ammonia concentration was elevated in both pregnant and lactating ewes above the control period level. The results suggest that Sardi sheep possess a high potential for the conservation of nitrogen during pregnancy and lactation periods.  相似文献

Glutamic acid decarboxylase activity in the main and accessory olfactory bulbs throughout the sexual cycle of the rat was studied. The effect of male pheromonal secretion on enzyme activity during proestrus and estrus day was also tested. The enzyme activity showed circadian rhythm during the estrous cycle. This rhythm was disrupted during diestrus-2 afternoon in the main bulb and came back during proestrus afternoon. A different pattern of enzyme activity was present in the accessory bulb, since the circadian rhythm was altered during proestrus morning, returning during estrus afternoon. Male odor exposition did not change enzyme profile activity during proestrus day and during estrus morning in the main bulb. In contrast, in the accessory bulb the olfactory stimuli induced opposite changes to that found in rats from the vivarium during proestrus. Comparison of enzyme activity in olfactory stimuli-deprived rats with that of pheromone-stimulated rats during proestrus showed that male odor exposure specifically affects accessory bulb enzyme activity. It is concluded that the changes of the olfactory bulb GABAergic system during proestrus and estrus day, or that evoked by odor stimuli, demonstrate the discriminative response of this system between the accessory olfactory bulb and the main olfactory bulb.  相似文献

* Here we investigated photosynthetic traits of evergreen species under a deciduous canopy in a temperate forest and revealed the importance of CO2 assimilation during winter for annual CO2 assimilation. * Saplings were shaded by the canopy trees from spring through to autumn, but were less shaded during the winter months. Photosynthetic rates at light saturation (Aarea) were lower during winter than during the growing season. Aarea was higher in Camellia, Ilex and Photinia than in Castanopsis, Cleyera and Quercus during the winter, but differed little during summer and autumn. * Estimated daily CO2 assimilation (Aday) was higher during the winter than during the growing season in Camellia, Ilex and Photinia but was higher than that during the growing season only at the beginning and end of winter in Castanopsis, Cleyera and Quercus. Aday was higher in Camellia, Ilex and Photinia than in Castanopsis, Cleyera and Quercus but differed little among them during the growing season. * These results reveal the importance of winter CO2 assimilation for the growth of Camellia, Ilex and Photinia. Furthermore, differences in annual CO2 assimilation among species are strongly modified by species-specific photosynthetic traits during the winter under deciduous canopy trees.  相似文献

This study examined the effect of acute exposure of the whole body to cold on blood lactate response during incremental exercise. Eight subjects were tested with a cycle ergometer in a climatic chamber, room temperature being controlled either at 24 degrees C (MT) or at -2 degrees C (CT). The protocol consisted of a step increment in exercise intensity of 30 W every 2 min until exhaustion. Oxygen consumption (VO2) was measured at rest and during the last minute of each exercise intensity. Blood samples were collected at rest and at exhaustion for estimations of plasma norepinephrine (NE), epinephrine (E), free fatty acid (FFA) and glucose concentrations, during the last 15 s of each exercise step and also during the 1st, 4th, 7th, and the 10th min following exercise for the determination of blood lactate (LA) concentration. The VO2 was higher during CT than during MT at rest and during nearly every exercise intensity. At CT, lactate anaerobic threshold (LAT), determined from a marked increase of LA above resting level, increased significantly by 49% expressed as absolute VO2, and 27% expressed as exercise intensity as compared with MT. The LA tended to be higher for light exercise intensities and lower for heavy exercise intensities during CT than during MT. The E and NE concentrations increased during exercise, regardless of ambient temperature. Furthermore, at rest and at exhaustion E concentrations did not differ between both conditions, while NE concentrations were greater during CT than during MT. Although deep-water running (DWR) is often used to obtain the benefits of aerobic fitness and to reduce vertical component stress, its attendant muscle stress remains unclear. The present study investigated lower extremity muscle activity and during DWR compared to that during land walking (LW) and water walking (WW). Surface electromyography was used to evaluate muscle activity in nine healthy adults during each exercise at self-determined slow, moderate, and fast paces. The duration of swing phase, ankle, knee and hip joint angle, and each joint range of motion (ROM) also investigated. Results show that the percentages of maximal voluntary contraction (%MVC) of the soleus and medial gastrocnemius were lower during DWR than during LW or WW in the backward swing phase. The %MVC of the rectus femoris was higher during WW and DWR than during LW; that of the vastus lateralis was lower during WW and DWR than during LW in the forward swing phase. In the biceps femoris, the %MVC was higher during DWR than during LW or WW in the forward and backward swing phase. Every pace showed a similar trend. These results suggest that DWR can stimulate the hip joint flexor or extensor muscles.  相似文献

The hypothesis was tested that acute water immersion to the neck (WI) compared with 6 degrees head-down tilt (HDT) induces a more pronounced distension of the heart and lower plasma levels of vasoconstrictor hormones. Ten healthy males underwent 30 min of HDT, WI, and a seated control (randomized). During WI, left atrial diameter and stroke volume increased to the same extent as during HDT. Cardiac output increased by 1 l/min more during WI than during HDT. (P < 0.05). Plasma atrial natriuretic peptide increased during WI (P < 0.05) but not during HDT, whereas plasma norepinephrine, vasopressin, and renin activity were suppressed similarly. Mean arterial pressure decreased by 9 mmHg (P < 0.05) during HDT and was unchanged during WI, and heart rate decreased more during HDT (P < 0.05). Arterial pulse pressure increased considerably more during HDT than during WI. In conclusion, the hypothesis was not confirmed because the cardiac atria were similarly distended by acute HDT and WI and the release of vasoconstrictor hormones were suppressed to the same extent.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to examine the rate of synthesis and the intracellular levels of polyamines as a function of the HeLa cell cycle. The intracellular levels of ornithine, which were high during mitosis and early G1 phase, decreased rapidly during late G1 phase when the ornithine decarboxylase activity was at its peak. The activities of ornithine decarboxylase and S-adenosyl methionine decarboxylase reached a peak during G1 and decreased rapidly during the S phase. The levels of polyamines were maximum in mitosis and S phase. In constrast, the rate of polyamine synthesis during S phase was 5–10 fold lower than that in mitosis or G1 phase. We have also observed fluctuations in diamine-oxidase activity during the cell cycle. The enzyme activity was high during mitosis and late G1 and low during S phase. Thus, the results of this study suggest an important role for the catabolic enzymes in the regulation of polyamine levels during the mammalian cell cycle.  相似文献

The relationships among social status and the cortisol and testosterone stress-response were studied in the non-natal male members of a troop of olive baboons (Papio anubis) before and during a period of social instability. The unstable period was characterized by dominance interactions that were more frequent, more inconsistent, and produced less linear hierarchies than during the stable period. These changes occurred predominantly among the high-ranking males. Such males engaged in coalitions and consortship harassments at a higher rate during the unstable period than during the stable period. Finally, high-ranking males had the highest rates of involvement in and initiation of escalated fighting during the unstable period, in contrast with the stable period. A number of endocrine correlates of instability emerged. During the stable period, high-ranking males (by reproductive criteria) showed an endocrine profile different from that of subordinates. They had the lowest basal cortisol titers, the largest and fastest increases in cortisol titer during stress, and had elevated testosterone titers during stress. None of these attributes was found in high-ranking males during the unstable period. Males during the unstable period had elevated basal cortisol titers, suppressed cortisol responsiveness to stress, and no longer showed elevated testosterone titers during stress. When psychological advantages associated with social status in a stable social environment were lost, endocrine efficiency previously associated with social status was apparently also lost. Further, high-ranking males, who were most aggressive exclusively during the unstable period, had the highest absolute titers of testosterone exclusively during the unstable period. Thus, elevated testosterone and high levels of aggression were unrelated to social status during the period of social stability, but were traits associated with dominant individuals during the unstable period.  相似文献

The physiology of the actinomycete Micromonospora echinospora was examined during growth. Biphasic accumulation of glycogen occurred, initially during the early exponential growth phase, and again following the onset of sporulation at 120 h. Lipid levels increased during growth eventually representing 25% of the cell mass. A significant proportion of the lipid was found to be in the form of triacylglycerols, which were found to accumulate markedly during the sporulation phase. The disaccharide trehalose was also found to accumulate during growth with levels rising to 5% of the dry weight during the mycelial production phase, then remaining constant during sporulation. Antibiotic was produced transiently by the cultures over the period preceding sporulation.  相似文献

Ribosome synthesis and metabolism has been studied in a plasmacytoma cell line synchronized by isoleucine deprivation. Ribosomal RNA (rRNA) was characterized by gel electrophoresis. The rate of ribosome synthesis (as measured by the appearance of labelled rRNA in the cytoplasm) varied greatly during the cell cycle. It was low during the G l phase, increased rapidly during the S phase, remained high during part of the G 2 phase, and dropped to a minimum during mitosis. A slowdown in the increasing rate of RNA synthesis was observed during the middle of the S phase.No significant decrease in the total nucleotide pool per cell could be observed during the S phase. The accumulation of RNA (as determined by absorbance measurements) was highest during the S and G 2 phases.Pulse labelling of rRNA and pulse chase experiments demonstrated that newly synthesized ribosomal subunits entered into free polysomes to the highest extent during the S phase. The percentage of membrane-bound polysomes of total polysomes increased during the G 1 phase, as did the percentage of labelled rRNA in the membrane-bound fraction.  相似文献

Impaired autonomic control represents a cardiovascular risk factor during long-term spaceflight. Little has been reported on blood pressure (BP), heart rate (HR), and heart rate variability (HRV) during and after prolonged spaceflight. We tested the hypothesis that cardiovascular control remains stable during prolonged spaceflight. Electrocardiography, photoplethysmography, and respiratory frequency (RF) were assessed in eight male cosmonauts (age 41-50 yr, body-mass index of 22-28 kg/m2) during long-term missions (flight lengths of 162-196 days). Recordings were made 60 and 30 days before the flight, every 4 wk during flight, and on days 3 and 6 postflight during spontaneous and controlled respiration. Orthostatic testing was performed pre- and postflight. RF and BP decreased during spaceflight (P < 0.05). Mean HR and HRV in the low- and high-frequency bands did not change during spaceflight. However, the individual responses were different and correlated with preflight values. Pulse-wave transit time decreased during spaceflight (P < 0.05). HRV reached during controlled respiration (6 breaths/min) decreased in six and increased in one cosmonaut during flight. The most pronounced changes in HR, BP, and HRV occurred after landing. The decreases in BP and RF combined with stable HR and HRV during flight suggest functional adaptation rather than pathological changes. Pulse-wave transit time shortening in our study is surprising and may reflect cardiac output redistribution in space. The decrease in HRV during controlled respiration (6 breaths/min) indicates reduced parasympathetic reserve, which may contribute to postflight disturbances.  相似文献

Ovarian activity of Sokoto red goats was studied for 12 months using 141 pairs of ovaries obtained from a Zaria abattoir. Ovarian activity occurred throughout the year but higher activity was observed during the rainy (June to September) and dry (January to March) seasons. The higher ovarian activity during the rainy season is perhaps due to the availability of pasture during this time, while the higher activity during the dry season might be related to the goat's ability to convert leaves and dry forage that are mostly available during this season into useful nutrients. Temperature increase, particularly during the dry season, might be a factor for higher ovarian activity during the same period.  相似文献

There is wide consensus about the significance of monitoring plant responses during flooding when evaluating specific tolerance. Nonetheless, plant recovery once water recedes has often been overlooked. This note highlights the importance of registering plant performance during a recovery phase. Two opposite types of plant growth responses, during and after flooding, are discussed. It is shown that an apparently poor performance during flooding does not necessarily involve a reduced tolerance, as plants can prioritize saving energy and carbohydrates for later resumption of vigorous growth during recovery. Conversely, maintenance of positive plant growth during flooding can imply extensive depletion of reserves, consequently constraining future plant growth. Therefore, to accurately estimate real tolerance to this stress, plant performance should be appraised during both flooding and recovery periods.  相似文献

The early literature suggests that hypoventilation in infants with congenital central hypoventilation syndrome (CHS) is less severe during rapid eye movement (REM) than during non-REM (NREM) sleep. However, this supposition has not been rigorously tested, and subjects older than infancy have not been studied. Given the differences in anatomy, physiology, and REM sleep distribution between infants and older children, and the reduced number of limb movements during REM sleep, we hypothesized that older subjects with CHS would have more severe hypoventilation during REM than NREM sleep. Nine subjects with CHS, aged (mean +/- SD) 13 +/- 7 yr, were studied. Spontaneous ventilation was evaluated by briefly disconnecting the ventilator under controlled circumstances. Arousal was common, occurring in 46% of REM vs. 38% of NREM trials [not significant (NS)]. Central apnea occurred during 31% of REM and 54% of NREM trials (NS). Although minute ventilation declined precipitously during both REM and NREM trials, hypoventilation was less severe during REM (drop in minute ventilation of 65 +/- 23%) than NREM (drop of 87 +/- 16%, P = 0.036). Despite large changes in gas exchange during trials, there was no significant change in heart rate during either REM or NREM sleep. We conclude that older patients with CHS frequently have arousal and central apnea, in addition to hypoventilation, when breathing spontaneously during sleep. The hypoventilation in CHS is more severe during NREM than REM sleep. We speculate that this may be due to increased excitatory inputs to the respiratory system during REM sleep.  相似文献

The relationship between parasternal intercostal length and rib cage cross-sectional area was examined in nine supine dogs during passive inflation and during quiet breathing before and after phrenicotomy. Parasternal intercostal length (PSL) was measured with a sonomicrometry technique, and rib cage cross-sectional area (Arc) was measured with a Respitrace coil placed around the middle rib cage. During active inspiration as well as during passive inflation, PSL decreased as Arc increased. However, the relationship between PSL and Arc during active inspiration, whether in the intact or phrenicotomized animal, was almost invariably different from that during passive inflation, so that the same increase in Arc was associated with a greater decrease in PSL in the former than in the latter instance. This difference between passive inflation and active inspiration is probably due to the active contraction of the parasternals during inspiration and the consequent caudal displacement of the sternum. In upright humans, the sternum moves cephalad and not caudad during inspiration, so the relationship between PSL and Arc during active breathing might be similar to that during passive inflation.  相似文献
