Three Cocconeis Ehrenberg species, epiphytic on the leaves of Posidonia oceanica (L.) Delile, were studied by light and electron microscopy. A new species, C. pseudonotata, is described which is closely related to C. notata Petit and C. diruptoides Hustedt. Gross morphology and the presence of a sigmoid raphe and sternum are the characters shared by the three species, whereas the central areas of sternum and raphe-sternum valves, and the stria and areola densities are the main distinctive characters for the species when observed by light microscopy. Scanning and transmission electron microscopic observations revealed that the fine structure of areolae must be also considered in order to identify the species. Comparison among the three species has been carried out by observations on material from our samples, as well as on the type material of C. diruptoides and cleaned samples from the Hustedt collection. The study also provides new information on the geographical distribution of these species.  相似文献

Study of Lessonia in southern Chile and Argentina indicates that it is represented there by three species: L. nigrescens Bory, L. flavicans Bory and L. vadosa Searles sp. nov. Plants of these three species have been confused with each other in the literature, but appear clearly separable. Lessonia nigrescens is distinguished from the others by its massive, solid holdfast and numerous stipes. In Lessonia flavicans and L. vadosa a single stipe arises from a branched holdfast. These two species are distinguishable from each other in details of blade morphology, anatomy, and ecology. The taxonomic status of plants in South America outside of the study area remains unresolved. Populations in the Falkland Islands and in northern Chile in particular are in need of further study.  相似文献

Abstract

The functional roles of seagrasses in the economy of coastal waters are to be fully realised and more clearly delineated. The biology, ecology and energetics of seagrasses meadows of the Mediterranean Sea, and in particular of Posidonia oceanica inclusing the stabilization of coastal sediments, this role as a base for major detrital food chains, nutrient resources contributory to general productivity of the open sea and the support of dense epiphytic communities, are discussed.  相似文献

A revision of the monoraphid pennate diatom genus Campyloneis Grunow was carried out based on LM and EM observations. The material examined originated from various herbarium collections and from extant epiphytic diatom communities on leaves of Posidonia spp. We also examined the generitype C. grevillei (Smith) Grunow and the fossil material of C. gheyselinchi Reinhold from which the author extracted the type. Our results clarified the fine structure of C. grevillei and C. gheyselinchi. Of the various varieties of C. grevillei, only the variety argus (Grunow) Cleve was retained. This differs from the nominate variety in the arrangement and shape of the areolae adjacent to the sternum of the araphid valve. The newly described taxon Campyloneis juliae De Stefano differs from all Campyloneis species in areolae ultrastructure and morphology of the valvocopulae. As for the fossil species C. gheyselinchi, the sternum valve areolae are similar to those of C. grevillei, but scarcity of frustules in the type material prohibited evaluation of its variability. For this reason we provisionally maintained its rank of species. The elaborate linking systems among the valvocopulae and valves in Campyloneis species appear to provide structural reinforcement against pressure from neighboring epiphytic diatoms and scouring of seagrass leaves.  相似文献

The morphology and fine valve structure of the marine epiphytic diatom Cocconeis heteroidea Hantzsch have been investigated. The entire frustule, including the internal and external structure of the raphid valve (RV) and araphid valve (AV), and the complete cingulum, are described using light microscopy and scanning and transmission electron microscopy, using a bleaching method. The strongly sigmoid raphe terminates in elongate hooked helictoglossae internally. The hymenes, with perforations arranged in a centric array, are located near the internal openings of the areolae in the RV. The striae in the AV consist of alveoli occluded by hymenes, that have perforations arranged in a parallel array and are located near the outer surface. The complete cingulum of AV consists of three open bands without fimbriae: a valvocopula, a copula with a ligula and a pleura with a small ligula. The RV has only a valvocopula which is open type and not fimbriate.  相似文献

Posidonia oceanica (L) Delile, a seagrass endemic of the Mediterranean sea, provides food and shelter to marine organisms. As environment contamination and variation in physico‐chemical parameters may compromise the survival of the few Posidonia genotypes living in the Mediterranean, comprehending the molecular mechanisms controlling Posidonia growth and development is increasingly important. In the present study the properties of ion channels in P. oceanica plasma membranes studied by the patch‐clamp technique in protoplasts obtained from the young non‐photosynthetic leaves were investigated. In protoplasts that were presumably originated from sheath cells surrounding the vascular bundles of the leaves, an outward‐rectifying time‐dependent channel with a single channel conductance of 58 ± 2 pS which did not inactivate, was selective for potassium and impermeable to monovalent cations such as Na+, Li+ and Cs+ was identified. In the same protoplasts, an inward‐rectifying channel that has a time‐dependent component with single channel conductance of the order of 10 pS, a marked selectivity for potassium and no permeation to sodium was also identified, as was a third type of channel that did not display any ionic selectivity and was reversibly inhibited by tetraethylammonium and lanthanum. A comparison of Posidonia channel characteristics with channels identified in terrestrial plants and other halophytic plants is included.  相似文献

Epiphytic diatoms were collected from both the leaves and internodes of Ruppia maritima in a New Jersey salt marsh during the growing season of the host plant. Community diversity (H and the number of diatom taxa) values were initially high as Ruppia began its growth, but quickly dropped to sustained low levels as vegetative growth of the host ceased and new attachment sites were no longer available. A critical examination of all structural characteristics indicated that the leaves and internodes of Ruppia support a single, nearly homogeneous epiphytic diatom community. An analysis of variance indicated that differences between leaves and internodes were minimal, as did a comparison of the assemblages present on these two sites by a selected similarity index. A total of 57 taxa were encountered and the single dominant taxon was Navicula pavillardi, which accounted for one out of every three individuals counted. A comparison of the epiphytic diatom community with those inhabiting the sediments on the marsh proper revealed that the marsh sediments were the major source of individuals for Ruppia colonization.  相似文献

Previous studies have shown that most leaf production (>90%) of the seagrass Posidonia oceanica is shed after senescence and that a substantial percentage (up to 80%) may thereafter be exported off the seagrass meadows by waves and currents. It has also been reported that P. oceanica meadows can accumulate large stocks of belowground detritus due to slow decomposition rates. However, the generality of these results across broad spatial scales is poorly known. In this report, we examine the fate of leaf production and the magnitude and dynamics of belowground detritus in 16 P. oceanica meadows distributed along the Spanish Mediterranean. Herbivores removed a small percentage of leaf production in all the meadows (≤13%), with most leaf production (>85%) being shed after senescence. Most shed leaves (>90%) were exported off the meadows by physical agents, such as waves and currents. The amount of belowground detritus stored within 10–15 cm from the sediment surface varied from ca. 70 to 7500 g DW m−2 among the meadows examined, and they accumulated at rates ranging from ca. 65 to 650 g DW m−2 per year. These values are large when compared to other communities of aquatic and terrestrial macrophytes. Our results show that P. oceanica meadows in the Spanish Mediterranean support high values of secondary production in other systems by exporting large amounts of leaf detritus as well as acting as substantial carbon sinks by accumulating large reservoirs of belowground detritus. Therefore, the increasing anthropogenic threats on P. oceanica could entail an important loss of secondary production and carbon storage in Mediterranean coastal ecosystems.  相似文献

The seagrass Posidonia oceanica is the most productive system of theMediterranean Sea. In order to gather information on the temporal andspatial variability of the suspended particulate matter in relation tobacterial dynamics, water samples were collected at 10 cm above thesediments over a period of 13 months in the Prelo Bay (Ligurian Sea, NWMediterranean). Measurements of seston concentration, as well as theelemental (POC and PON) and biochemical composition (lipids, proteins, carbohydrates and nucleic acids) of particulate matter were carried out toassess the origin, composition and bacterial contribution to the foodpotentially available in the seagrass system to consumers. Lipids andproteins were the main biochemical classes of organic compounds, followed bycarbohydrates. Despite the highly refractory composition of the seagrassleaves, particulate organic matter was mostly composed of labile compounds(69.9% of POC). POM temporal patterns were controlled by currentspeed at the sediment–water interface that resuspended only smallparticles largely colonised by bacteria after an intensive process offractionation and aging. In the seagrass system, the POM appears to bedominated by bacteria (density ranging from 0.7 to 2.5×109 cells l™1, representing more than48.3% of POC and 68.7% of the biopolymeric carbon, as the sumof lipid, protein and carbohydrate carbon). This feature was characteristicof the seagrass system since much lower bacterial densities were foundoutside the Posidonia meadow. Bacteria were negatively correlated with theconcentration of nitrite and nitrate suggesting a selective utilisation ofinorganic nutrients to support their growth. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Abstract

Distribution, structure and phenology of Posidonia oceanica meadows along Sicilian coasts are reported. Posidonia beds are frequently found in Sicily, especially along the south-eastern, north-western and western coasts. Leaf surface per shoot is identified as the most important variable among the phenological parameters. The rhizomes annual mean primary production turned out to be among the highest values observed in the Mediterranean Sea. Flowering and fruiting of Posidonia oceanica are frequent and can occur every year.  相似文献

High-resolution multispectral imagery, aerial photography, and SCUBA diving surveys were used to determine if there had been any significant alteration in the dimensions of Posidonia oceanica beds in the Bay of Menton, French Riviera, since colonization of the green alga Caulerpa taxifolia began in the late 1980s. After 8 years of direct contact, there was no evidence of a decrease in the abundance of P. oceanica. On the contrary, the integrity of a seagrass bed had increased in the first area colonized by Caulerpa taxifolia on the eastern side of Cape Martin and, in a more recently colonized central part of the bay, established tufts of Posidonia were isolated from the alga by well-defined exclusion zones.  相似文献

Seagrasses provide various ecosystem functions in coastal areas of the world. In the Mediterranean Sea, Posidonia oceanica is an endemic species threatened by several activities despite being protected by national and international laws. Currently, several transplanting initiatives have been carried out using different methods, among which those including seeds and seedlings are considered the most ecological and low-cost ones. Beach-cast fruits and seeds can be found in spring and their appearance can easily be reported, through a citizen science approach, by the community. One of the obstacles in using these methods is identifying the best substrate in which to place P. oceanica seeds to facilitate root adhesion of the seedlings prior to their transplantation into the sea. In the present study, we analyzed, using a 3D surface optical microscope, the roughness of natural rocks to identify the availability of specific roughness ranges suitable for adhesion and root anchoring of P. oceanica seedlings. Conventional roughness parameters and roughness power spectral density were calculated for the inner and outer surfaces of 9 different rock samples. Among the rock samples examined, the calcarenitic ones and in particular marsala calcarenite, due to the presence of the “ideal roughness for seedlings” can be considered one of the best consolidated substrates to be used for the construction of ad hoc devices on which plantlet of P. oceanica can grow for the purpose of restoration.  相似文献

Microwave-assisted extraction was employed for the isolation of polysaccharides from Posidonia oceanica (PPO). The extracting parameters were optimized adopting response surface methodology. The highest polysaccharide yield (2.55 ± 0.09%), which is in concordance with the predicted value (2.76%), was obtained under the following conditions: extraction time 60 s, liquid–solid ratio of 50:1 (mL/g) and power of 800 W. This polysaccharide, with molecular weight of 524 KDa, characterized by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry showed that PPO was mainly composed of galactose, glucose, and arabinose with molar percentages 25.38, 24.37, and 21.64%, respectively. The pharmacological evaluation of PPO using animal models at the dose of 100 mg/kg indicated a significant anti-inflammatory activity with a percentage of inhibition of edema of 54.65% and a significant antinociceptive activity with 78.91% inhibition of writhing for peripheral analgesic activity and an increase in the hot plate reaction time for central analgesic activity.  相似文献

The influence of factors, both abiotic (light and nutrients) and biotic (meadow structure, herbivory and seagrass shoot length) in the abundance and distribution of epiphytes on the Mediterranean seagrass Posidonia oceanica was investigated by means of a correlational approach over a spatial scale of ca. 500 km and at two different depths (5 and 15 m). Variability was examined from the double perspective of integrative community measures (biomass, species richness and alpha-diversity) and species composition. We assessed the influence of biotic and abiotic factors on integrative community measures using multiple correlation analyses. The influence of these factors in the structure of the whole community was investigated using a distance-based RDA for a linear model. A total of 129 taxa, mostly epiphytic algae, were recorded across all sites and depths. A large part of the variability in species composition (51%) was explained by the variables investigated. In particular, variability caused by differences in grazing pressure was the most important (25%), followed by variables related to nutrient availability (11%), meadow structure (6%), light (5%) and seagrass shoot length (4%). Among integrative community variables investigated, species richness was also best explained by grazing and nutrients.  相似文献

Abstract

The natural growth of a Posidonia oceanica meadow is the result of a long process of development (series of events), but the dynamics are often difficult to establish because of the lack of a zero state and of sufficiently long chronological series. In addition, while it is sometimes possible to observe major regressions, the phenomena of recolonisation and of small-scale fluctuations are rarely detected. Nevertheless, with the emergence of new investigatory techniques (lepidochronology, microcartography, monitoring networks, accurate dating techniques, etc.,) considerable progress has been made in this field. The development in space and time of the seagrass beds is dependant on hydrodynamic action and sedimentary deposits. This means that in sheltered bays Posidonia oceanica may form original structures such as barrier reefs or micro-atolls, while in turbulent waters one observes the formation of spectacular structures resulting from erosion (intermatte, “rivière de retour”). A disequilibrium in sedimentation may result in dramatic regression in some seagrass beds. The multiplicity of prevailing environmental conditions results in the occurrence of a range of meadow types: “herbiers de plaines”, “herbiers de collines”, “herbiers tigrés”, “herbiers en escalier”. The impact of human pressure over the past few decades has not been insignificant. Coastal development constructions that have altered the direction of currents and the sedimentation, sewage outfalls that have resulted in an increase in the turbidity of the water and the mechanical action of anchors or trawl nets which have damaged certain areas of seagrass meadow have caused extensive regression. Conversely, the rehabilitation of previously degraded areas has made it possible to monitor the process of recolonisation.  相似文献

We studied the role of genetic variability of donor beds in establishing transplantation criteria for the Mediterranean seagrass Posidonia oceanica. Horizontal rhizomes, collected from three geographically distinct populations, were transplanted into a common bed at a highly human‐impacted locality. The transplantation site was located near one of the donor populations. After three years, the shoots collected in the population adjacent to the transplanting site showed the lowest growth performance. Genetic variability, assessed through the analysis of hypervariable microsatellite regions, and growth performance followed a similar trend. The shoots growing and branching at the highest rate were those collected from populations with the highest heterozygosity values, despite greater geographic distance. No genetic differences were found between the transplanted shoots and shoots from donor meadows, as expected due to the low rate of sexual reproduction in P. oceanica and the short time that had passed since the transplants. The problem of affecting the local gene pool by the introduction of foreign genotypes could arise, but introduction of new alleles could balance the degradation of genetic variability caused by human impact. In general our study suggests that the genetic variability of source material is an important aspect to consider in the development of seagrass restoration strategies.  相似文献

Coral sands off Réunion Island and Rodrigues (Mascarene archipelago, Western Indian Ocean) support diverse diatom communities, particularly rich in Monoraphidineae. Recent surveys of reef environments (June 2005 and June 2007) permitted the recognition of several taxa belonging to the diatom genus Cocconeis, among which are two new, relatively small taxa, epipsammic on coral sand. Cocconeis coronata Riaux-Gobin et Romero sp. nov. is similar to C. scutellum but has its own distinctive features. In external view, the concave raphe valve possesses uniseriate striae and a subsident hyaline marginal rim, while the strongly convex sternum valve has a submarginal, generally continuous crest, a hexagonal pattern of areolation, short, rounded spines that are often regularly arranged around valve face areolae, a complex areola hymen and small marginal chambers. Some morphometric differences were noted between the populations of C. coronata at Réunion and Rodrigues. Cocconeis margaritata Riaux-Gobin et Al-Handal, sp. nov. is smaller, possesses a sternum valve like that of C. placentula and C. neothumensis, but has denser striation and small pearl-like concretions around the areola aperture on the sternum valve. Several other taxa that resemble, or may be varieties of, C. margaritata require further study before being formally described. Cocconeis margaritata and C. coronata are small and relatively rare, so their study requires scanning electron microscopy.  相似文献

Abstract

An external genetic input of Posidonia oceanica fruits dispersed by currents in the Ligurian Sea (Western Mediterranean) was investigated. During 2003–2004, when a massive fruiting event occurred, fruits were collected from plants at Monterosso al Mare (meadow) and compared with stranded fruits sampled in front of the meadow and downcurrent in Tuscany along 80 km of the coast. After their growth in culture, the plants were analysed using 10 random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) molecular markers. Cluster analysis of similarity showed four distinct genetic populations. One group included parental plants from Monterosso and stranded fruits with the same genetic traits. The second group was formed by fruits stranded in the southern sector (Tuscany), and the third and the fourth groups were samples taken onshore, in front of the meadow, which appeared very different from the other two groups. Results evidenced the probability of the arrival of a new genetic population of nearly 40%, and it seems likely that the stranded fruits of external provenance did not come from the nearest P. oceanica meadows of Tuscany but were probably carried ashore by the Corsica current, as supported by an oceanographic analysis.  相似文献
