The calcified, though strongly mucosoid gametophytes of Trichogloea (Nemaliales, Liagoraceae) usually appear seasonally for a short period in tropical and subtropical regions. Vegetative and reproductive characteristics of the presently recognized species, Trichogloea requienii (Mont.) Kützing (the generitype), Trichogloea lubrica J. Agardh, and Trichogloea herveyi W. R. Taylor, are described and compared. In addition, the identities of two previously synonymized species, Trichogloea jadinii Børgesen and Trichogloea javensis B0rgesen are clarified. Species of the genus display considerable variation in habit and branching patterns, necessitating an assessment of reproductive structures for accurate identification. Reliable features of Trichogloea include the structure of the medulla and the cortical (assimilatory) filaments, location and structure of carpogonial branches and spermatangia, and the nature of sterile filaments in the vicinity of the cystocarp. Secondary features include both external and internal branching pattern, and the proportion of calcium carbonate to lubricous material, the latter having to be assessed from fresh collections. The present study provides a comparative morphological account of the species of Trichogloea. As a result, T. requienii, T. lubrica, T. herveyi are confirmed as independent species; T. jadinii is removed from synonymy with T. lubrica and placed in that of T. requienii, and T. javensis is confirmed as a synonym of Izziella orientalis (J. Agardh) Huisman et Schils.  相似文献

Liagorophila, a monotypic genus in the Acrochaetiaceae (Nemalionales) from the zuestern Pacific, is redescribed, particularly with reference to its sexual reproductive structures. The fertilized carpogonium shows a longitudinal first division; the spermatangia may be borne directly on a normal vegetative cell. Monosporangia are not known. For these reasons, and although vegetatively resembling some species of Acrochaetium, the genus should be recognized as distinct from other genera of Acrochaetiaceae.  相似文献

TheAntennaria media polyploid species complex has been evaluated, at least in part, on numerous occasions without consensus on either the taxa that should be included within the complex or the rank at which these taxa should be recognized. The primary purpose of this quantitative, multivariate, phenetic study is to propose a taxonomy for the polyploid species complex that not only is independent of a knowledge of either chromosome number or reproductive biology but that concurrently minimally reflects morphological variation associated with each. The use of canonical discriminant analysis facilitates this purpose. In an attempt to maintain consistency with other recent revisions of polyploid complexes within the genus, the rank of subspecies (A. media subsp.media, A. media subsp.ciliata, A. media subsp.compacta, A. media subsp.fusca, andA. media subsp.pulchella) is selected as the infraspecific rank that satisfies the purpose of the phenetic study and is supported by the analyses. These subspecies differ to varying degrees with respect to reproductive characters (corolla length, pappus length), vegetative-reproductive characters (involucre length, peduncle length, cauline leaf length, cauline leaf width), and vegetative characters (basal leaf length and basal leaf width).Antennaria media subsp.pulchella is a sexually reproducing, diploid subspecies, whereas the remaining four subspecies are essentially agamospermous polyploids.  相似文献

The vegetative and reproductive morphology of two epiphytic Herpochondria species, H. corallinae (Martens) Falkenberg (the type species) and H. elegans (Okamura) Itono from Korea were investigated. They are bilaterally compressed and alternate-distichously branched, and lateral branches are produced by oblique divisions of the apical cell. Procarps are restricted to the first periaxial cell of the branches. Spermatangial mother cells produce one or two spermatangia. H. corallinae forms tetrasporangia on six periaxial cells, whereas H. elegans has them on only the two lateral periaxial cells. The prostrate habit, the production of six periaxial cells in opposite pairs, and tetrasporangial stichidia are confirmed as diagnostic characters of the genus Herpochondria.  相似文献

Vegetative and reproductive development of Neosiphonia flavimarina gen. et sp. nov. (Rhodomelaceae, Ceramiales) from Bangpo on the western coast of Korea was investigated. This species is superficially similar to Polysiphonia, but differs distinctly from the latter in vegetative and reproductive structures. The plants attach by a solid disk composed of a dense cluster of rhizoids cut off from the pericentral cell wall, and bear erect indeterminate branches producing the lateral-branch initials from successive segments in a spiral arrangement. The procarps have a three-celled carpo-gonial branch. Spermatangial branches are formed on a primary branch of the trichoblasts, terminating in a single or occasionally two large, sterile cells. Tetra-sporangia are produced from the second pericentral cell adjacent to the trichoblast basal cell on indeterminate branches, and arranged spirally. Comparing several taxonomic characters among related genera, Neosiphonia occupies an independent phylogenetic position from Polysiphonia and leads to the conclusion that the genus may have a strong link with Fernandosiphonia which has a unilateral branching system. Relevant nomenclatural changes for several Polysiphonia species are also proposed.  相似文献

Cyanophora is an important glaucophyte genus of unicellular biflagellates that may have retained ancestral features of photosynthetic eukaryotes. The nuclear genome of Cyanophora was recently sequenced, but taxonomic studies of more than two strains are lacking for this genus. Furthermore, no study has used molecular methods to taxonomically delineate Cyanophora species. Here, we delimited the species of Cyanophora using light and electron microscopy, combined with molecular data from several globally distributed strains, including one newly established. Using a light microscope, we identified two distinct morphological groups: one with ovoid to ellipsoidal vegetative cells and another with dorsoventrally flattened or broad, bean‐shaped vegetative cells containing duplicated plastids. Our light and scanning electron microscopy clearly distinguished three species with ovoid to ellipsoidal cells (C. paradoxa Korshikov, C. cuspidata Tos.Takah. & Nozaki sp. nov., and C. kugrensii Tos.Takah. & Nozaki sp. nov.) and two species with broad, bean‐shaped cells (C. biloba Kugrens, B.L.Clay, C.J.Mey. & R.E.Lee and C. sudae Tos.Takah. & Nozaki sp. nov.) based on differences in cell shape and surface ornamentations of the vegetative cells under the field‐emission scanning electron microscope. Molecular phylogenetic analyses of P700 chl a apoprotein A2 (psaB) genes and internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions of nuclear ribosomal DNA (rDNA), as well as a comparison of secondary structures of nuclear rDNA ITS‐2 and genetic distances of psaB genes, supported the delineation of five morphological species of Cyanophora.  相似文献

Cathaya Chun et Kuang is a monotypic genus and one of the gymnosperms endemic to China. We investigated Cathaya argyrophylla with both light and scanning electron microscopy to study the external and internal surfaces of leaf cuticle, leaf blade, petiole, shoot apex, young stem, bark, wood, young and old roots, and mycorrhizae. It is shown that Cathaya has unique characteristics as well as common features of the Pinaceae, there being a difference between Cathaya and Pinus and the rest of the family. So far as the vegetative organs are concerned, the genus is most closely related to Pseudotsuga and Larix. Data derived from the study of structures of vegetative organs of Cathaya are very different from those of reproductive organs, indicating the complexity of the problem of systematics and evolution in these plants. However, the present study supports the view that Cathaya should not be included in the genus Pseudotsuga as a new species.  相似文献

The female reproductive structures and their development, and the vegetative structure are studied in 17 species of red algae in the Cryptonemiales (Rhodophyceae). Three genera, Weeksia, Constantinea, and the type species of Leptocladia, are removed from the Dumontiaceae to a newly created family, the Weeksiaceae, because of differing postfertilization events leading to the development of the gonimoblast from a cell of the carpogonial branch. Three genera of Dumontiaceae are studied: Pikea, including P. californica, the type species, and Pikea robusta a newly described species; Dilsea californica, and a newly described species of Neodilsea, a genus heretofore known only from the northwestern Pacific. Two transfers are made from the genus Leptocladia, 1 to Farlowia, as F. conferta, and 1 to Rhodophyllis (Gigartinales) as R. peruviana. Three species in the Kallymeniaceae are redescribed: Kallymenia pacifica, a rare and nearly unknown species from southern California and adjacent Pacific Mexico; K. norrisii from central California; and K. oblongifructa from Washington, Oregon, and northern California.  相似文献

Abbott , Isabella A. (Hopkins Marine Sta. of Stanford U., Pacific Grove, Calif.) Morphological studies in a new species of Acrosymphyton (Rhodophyceae). Amer. Jour. Bot. 49(8): 845–849. Illus. 1962.—Acrosymphyton taylori sp. nov. (Dumontiaceae, Cryptonemiales, Rhodophyceae) is shown to have a sexual cycle essentially similar to that of the 2 other species in the genus, but differs in some details of the sexual structures and the vegetative structure. Acrosymphyton taylori, from the Hawaiian Islands, is the only member of the genus from the Pacific. Acrosymphyton is only one of several genera of red algae possessing soft, gelatinous, uniaxial thalli. A study of specimens from various herbaria showed that specimens of Dudresnaya and Calosiphonia have been confused with Acrosymphyton.  相似文献

Five species (A. escallonioides Schltdl. & Cham., A. hirtella Lundell, A. elliptica Thunb., A. sieboldii Miq., and A. wallichii A.DC.) from three subgenera in the genus Ardisia (Myrsinaceae) were examined for self-compatibility, agamospermy, and autogamy using hand-pollination and pollinator-exclusion experiments on both garden plants and wild populations. All five species are self-compatible but not agamospermous. Four of the five species exhibited autogramy. Autogamy was strongly associated with stamen position, anther dehiscence type, protogyny, and inflorescence type. Because self-compatibility is widespread across different subgenera, it may be a general characteristic of the genus Ardisia. The potential impact of self-compatibility on the mating system and population genetic structure is discussed.

Species currently classified within the cyanobacterial genus Microcoleus were determined to fall into two distinct clades in a 16S rDNA phylogeny, one containing taxa within the Oscillatoriaceae, the other containing taxa within the Phormidiaceae. The two lineages were confirmed in an analysis of the 16S–23S internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region sequences and secondary structures. The type species for Microcoleus is M. vaginatus Gomont, and this taxon belongs in the Oscillatoriaceae. Consequently, Microcoleus taxa in the Phormidiaceae must be placed in separate genera, and we propose the new genus Coleofasciculus to contain marine taxa currently placed in Microcoleus. The type species for Coleofasciculus is the well‐studied and widespread marine mat‐forming species Microcoleus chthonoplastes (Mert.) Zanardini ex Gomont. Other characters separating the two families include type of cell division and thylakoid structure.  相似文献

Eucheuma isiforme (C. Agardh) J. Agardh exhibits a combination of vegetative and reproductive features that distinguish it from other critically studied genera in the Solieriaceae. The development of the multiaxial thallus, emphasizing the arrangement of periaxial cells around each axial file; presence of reproductive nemathecia that contain carpogonial branches and auxiliary cells; and post-diploidization stages, including gonimoblast and pericarp initiation, stages of fusion cell formation, and carposporophyte development are described and illustrated for the first time in this species. The vegetative and reproductive features observed in E. isiforme are not diagnostic of any of the recently erected tribes in the Solieriaceae. Eucheuma appears most closely related to the Indian Ocean genus, Sarconema.  相似文献

A new genus, Grangerdoryctes gen. n. (with type species Aivalykus niger Granger), from Madagascar and a new subgenus Pararhacon subgen. n. of the genus Rhaconotus Ruthe (type species R. (P.) haeselbarthi sp. n.) from South Africa are described and illustrated. A discussion of genera without a second radiomedial vein of the fore wing in the tribe Doryctini is presented. The position and content of the subtribe Rhaconotina are discussed and a key for determination of the genera of this subtribe is proposed.  相似文献

The genus Kurzia is divided into two subgenera: Kurzia s. str. and Rostrokurzia n. subg. Subgenus Kurzia includes Kurzia (K.) latissima Kurz, 1874, with a palearctic -, Kurzia (K.) polyspina n. sp. with a neotropic - , and Kurzia (K.) cf. media (Birge, 1879) with a nearctic distribution. Rostrokurzia includes Kurzia (R.) longirostris Daday, 1898 (pantropical distribution), and Kurzia (R.) brevilabris Rajapaksa & Fernando, 1986, from subtropical and tropical Asia. Kurzia latissima Kurz, 1874, from Central Europe is redescribed in detail.  相似文献

A study of the branching of the inflorescence and the vegetative shoot of the genusKummerowia, consisting ofK. stipulacea (Maxim.) Makino andK. striata (Thunb.) Schindler, has led to the following conclusions: (1) the inflorescences of both species are reduced compound cymes, (2) the branching system of the inflorescence ofKummerowia is not clearly different from that of the vegetative shoot and there are some transitional forms between both systems, and (3) the inflorescence ofKummerowia is different from the racemose inflorescences ofLespedeza andCampylotropis. Based on the differences found in the branching system of the inflorescence,Kummerowia is distinctly separated fromLespedeza andCampylotropis and is more correctly treated as a distinct genus from the latter two.  相似文献

As part of a long‐term study on the biology and ecology of the intertidal kelp Lessonia nigrescens Bory, we report on the occurrence of gall development on this alga, identified the possible causal agent, and assessed the extent of the phenomenon in two wild stands of the host. Our results showed that galls affecting natural populations of L. nigrescens were associated with the infection by a filamentous brown algal endophyte of the genus Laminariocolax. Assignment to Laminariocolax of the endophytes isolated from cultured gall tissue was based on the (i) high internal transcribed spacer 1 (ITS1) sequence similarity and phylogenetic relationship between the Chilean isolates and several species of the genus Laminariocolax endophytic in other kelps, (ii) reproductive and vegetative features of the endophyte in culture, and (iii) anatomical agreement of fully developed galls of Lessonia with those described for other kelp galls caused by endophytic members of Laminariocolax. Unequivocal identification at the species level of the endophytes infecting Lessonia, however, awaits further studies.  相似文献

Comparative studies of congeneric native and exotic species have proved fruitful in understanding plant traits that foster invasion. Using this approach, we investigate the complex reproductive system of the invasive Lespedeza cuneata (Dum.-Cours.) G. Don in relation to three native congeners in the variable environment of the North American tallgrass prairie. Lespedeza species produce both chasmogamous (CH) and cleistogamous (CL) flowers, and propagate clonally via vegetative buds. Utilizing multiple natural populations over 2 years, we investigated reproductive modes of individuals from bagged and unbagged treatments of each species. We found that L. cuneata produced a mean of five times as many seeds and a significantly greater number of vegetative buds than any native studied, and over twenty times as many CH flowers. Insect visitation significantly affected seed set in CH flowers, though some autonomous CH selfing occurred in all species. The invasive relied relatively less on selfing than the natives and exhibited less variation in reproductive output from both modes of reproduction. We conclude that the diverse reproductive biology and wide regeneration niche of L. cuneata in relation to its native congeners confer a fitness homeostasis that facilitates the successful spread of this invasive under a wide range of conditions.  相似文献
