Variability in thallus morphology is common in red seaweeds. Two co-occurring forms have been described for Chondracanthus chamissoi based mainly on blade width. To determine whether two distinct forms or a range of intermediate morphologies occur in C. chamissoi, thalli were collected from three localities in southern Chile in autumn–winter, repeating the sampling in one locality in spring and in summer. In each occasion, individual sporophytic and male and female gametophytic clumps were collected, and the longest blade with intact apex from each clump was evaluated. Blade length, width, density of spines, axis curvature and thickness, and pinnule length and width were evaluated in each blade. Principal components analyses separated two groups of thalli, one group with narrow, thick, and curved (concavo-convex) blades, with few spines consistent with f. lessonii, and another with broad, thin, and flat blades, with many spines consistent with f. chauvinii. These variables also had bimodal frequency distributions. Pinnule measurements were mainly associated with differences among sporophytes and gametophytes. Age (length), phase of the life cycle, and sex were not related to the forms. Furthermore, thalli of both forms were collected side by side in the study sites and throughout the year so the occurrence of the two forms was not attributable to local environmental conditions. In this species, secondary basal disks are produced after attachment of apexes to the substratum. These disks may produce blades with a modified morphology in a way similar to proliferations and regenerations described for Schottera nicaeensis.  相似文献

Phenotypic differences between the low wave exposure Mazzaella splendens (Setchell et Gardner) Hommersand and the high exposure Mazzaella linearis (Setchell et Gardner) Fredericq could be due to plasticity or genetic differentiation. Common gardens were used to assess their levels of plasticity after describing allometric relationships. As thalli lengthened, stipe development for M. splendens almost ceased even though blades continued to expand, but M. linearis formed a larger stipe before developing a blade that continued to stay narrow at longer thallus lengths. Common gardens demonstrated that M. splendens regrown in the site of M. linearis produced a wider blade than M. splendens regrown in its natural low energy site and that M. linearis regrown in low wave energy either could not form a wider blade or became narrower than thalli from its high energy site. Tetrasporophytes of M. splendens produced a longer and thicker stipe in the high energy site, but the larger M. linearis stipe was not realized because its wider blades made it vulnerable to hydrodynamic removal. Mazzaella splendens therefore had low survivorship in the high wave energy site, and survivors were not long enough to reproduce. Survivorship and reproduction of M. linearis was similar in both environments. Some of the M. splendens and M. linearis characters are plastic, but this plasticity was insufficient for convergence of phenotypes, and blade width plasticity was maladaptive at least for M. splendens. Developmental systems producing the stipe and blade phenotypes of each species have undergone genetic differentiation.  相似文献

The life cycle of the large dioecious alga Sargassum horneri (Turner) C. Agardh was completed in unialgal culture by controlling photoperiod in relation to the phase of growth. Embryos isolated from a naturally grown female thallus gave rise to early germlings that rapidly formed blades under both short-day (9 h L) and long-day (15 h L) conditions at 20° C Shoot elongation, which followed early blade formation, occurred under the short-day conditions hut not under the long-day conditions. Functional female and male receptacles developed when thalli 8–14 cm long grown under the short-day conditions were transferred to the long-day conditions; gamete fusion occurred when male and female thalli were grown together. Fertilized oospores gave rise to normal thalli in a manner similar to that for in situ plants. Thus, the life cycle of S. horneri was completed in laboratory culture.  相似文献

Morphological similarities of many parasites and their hosts have led to speculation that some groups of plant, animal, fungal, and algal parasites may have evolved directly from their hosts. These parasites, which have been termed adelphoparasites in the botanical literature, and more recently, agastoparasites in the insect literature, may evolve monophyletically from one host and radiate secondarily to other hosts or, these parasites may arise polyphyletically, each arising from its own host. In this study we compare the internal transcribed spacer regions of the nuclear ribosomal repeats of species and formae specialis (host races) included in the red algal parasite genus Asterocolax with its hosts, which all belong to the Phycodrys group of the Delesseriaceae and with closely related nonhost taxa of the Delesseriaceae. These analyses reveal that species of Asterocolax have evolved polyphyletically. Asterocolax erythroglossi from the North Atlantic host Erythroglossum laciniatum appears to have evolved from its host, whereas taxa included in the north Pacific species Asterocolax gardneri have had two independent origins. Asterocolax gardneri from the host Polyneura latissima probably arose directly from this host. In contrast, all other A. gardneri formae specialis appear to have originated from either Phycodrys setchellii or P. isabelliae and radiated secondarily onto other closely related taxa of the Phycodrys group, including Nienburgia andersoniana and Anisocladella pacifica. Gamete crossing experiments confirm that A. gardneri from each host is genetically isolated from both its host, and from other A. gardneri and their hosts. Cross-infection experiments reveal that A. gardneri develops normally only on its natural host, although some abberrant growth may occur on alternate hosts. The ability of red algal parasites to radiate secondarily to other red algal taxa, where they may become isolated genetically and speciate, suggests that this process of speciation is not a “genetic dead end” but one that may give rise to related clusters of parasite species.  相似文献

The sporophyte of Himantothallus develops according to a closed pattern in which the number and position of the blades is determined by the location of trichothallic meristems in a filamentous germling. Expansion of the miniature juvenile to the massive adult thallus is accomplished by diffuse secondary growth and involves a change from filamentous rhizoids to a hapteroid holdfast, flattening of the stipe, and enormous increases in length, breadth, and thickness of both stipe and blade. The axis usually bears 1–8 lateral blades, often paired, and terminates in a flattened stub. Phaeoglossum is interpreted as a growth form of Himantothallus in which a terminal blade develops to the exclusion of lateral blades, the latter being represented by a single spine. Phyllogigas clearly falls within the morphological spectrum of Himantothallus, the lack of twisting being related to physical factors in the environment. Sporangia, interspersed with an equal or somewhat larger number of two-celled paraphyses, are borne in slightly elevated sori scattered over both surfaces of the blade. Zoospore germination was not observed, nor were gametophytes, either in culture or in the field. Haptera apparently originate from the meristoderm in the lower part of the maturing stipe and lack a filamentous medulla. The mature stipe and the mature blade are anatomically similar, being composed of a superficial meristoderm, a cortex of parenchyma-like cells, and a filamentous medulla. The meristoderm is usually a single layer of plastid-containing cells that divide anticlinally to accommodate (or effect) expansion and periclinally to produce cortical tissue inward. Cortical cells are in radial files and increase in diameter towards the interior. They usually are densely packed with physodes. The medulla is uniquely distinguished by the presence of sheathed trumpet hyphae. Cells of the trumpet hyphae have perforate end walls with callose deposits and probably function in conduction as do the sieve filaments in Laminariales. Sheathing cells are filled with plastids. Sheathing filaments form connections among themselves and with nearby unsheathed filaments. The sheathed trumpet hyphae and their matrix of unsheathed filaments form a plexus, which in the mature blade is flattened and may be stripped intact from the other tissues. Development of the embryonic sporophyte is very similar to that in Desmarestia, as is the anatomy of the adult thallus and the sporangia. From these considerations, Himantothallus is assigned to the Desmarestiaceae (Desmarestiales).  相似文献

We developed a clonal culture of Sargassum horneri to investigate the effect of photoperiod on reproduction in this species. Regenerated vegetative thalli were obtained using lateral branches excised from a thallus grown from a single embryo under short‐day conditions (SD = 10:14 h light : dark cycle). Lateral branches excised from the SD‐regenerated thallus became vegetative thalli that remained in that phase as long as they were cultured under SD. When an excised lateral branch was cultured under long‐day conditions (LD = 14:10 h light : dark cycle), it began to enter the reproductive phase while still less than 50 mm long. Induction of the reproductive phase was accompanied by a distinctive morphological change – suppression of blade formation at the apical region of the branch; elongation of branches without blades was then followed by differentiation of receptacles bearing conceptacles on their surface. Apices of receptacles were able to interconvert between reproductive and vegetative phases, as blades resprouted upon transfer from LD to SD. The critical day length for induction of receptacle formation was between 13 and 14 h; receptacle formation was also induced under SD conditions with night breaks (NBs). These results strongly suggest that reproductive regulation of S. horneri is a photoperiodic long‐day response. NBs with blue and green light were effective for reproductive induction but not with red light. This suggests that blue‐ and/or green‐light photoreceptors are involved in the photoperiodic reproductive response of S. horneri.  相似文献

Summary Cytological comparisons of homologous tissues in blades and stipes by stereological analysis have shown differences exist between blade and stipe organs inSargassum. Based on measurements of total thylakoid and cristae membrane surface areas in these organs blades were found to contain 61% more thylakoid membrane surface and 65% more cristae membrane than stipes on a per unit volume basis. Assuming photosynthesis and respiration are directly related to the surface area of the internal membranes in the respective organelles it is possible to predict that blades will have a 61% greater photosynthetic and a 65% greater respiratory potential. Photosynthetic and respiratory rates for blades and stipes were determined manometrically and show a 62% greater photosynthetic and 59% greater respiratory rates for the blade tissues agreeing very well with predicted values.Present evidence indicates that photosynthetic and respiratory rate differences observed in the blades and stipes inSargassum are the result of increased membrane surface areas in the larger cells of the tissues which make up the blade. The basic cell structure,i.e., the percent volume of cell cytoplasm occupied by each organelle, is similar in homologous tissues of both organs regardless of cell size. Therefore physiological differences between the two organs are primarily due to changes in cell size and not in basic cell construction. This provides an interesting mechanism for producing physiological differences without changing basic cell structure in the organs of this plant.  相似文献

A new species of Porphyra, Porphyra lilliputiana, is described for the New Zealand region. This species is very small ([5] 10–20 [35] mm) and is found growing epiphytically, epilithically and epizoically on upper inter-tidal shores of moderate exposure. Field-collected material of P. lilliputiana possessed archeosporangia, endosporangia, spermatangia and zygotosporangia. In culture, archeospores vi/ere released and germinated to form thalli. Endosporangia either developed directly into thalli or released endospores which individually formed thalli. Zygotospores developed into the concho-celis phase, which formed conchosporangia. Released conchospores formed thalli. This species is distinguished by its small size, arrangement of reproductive cells, occurrence of endosporangia, dentate margin and habitat.  相似文献

Original chromosome determinations are presented for 20 American Lupinus taxa, including, for the first time, unifoliolate species, together with first data on meiotic behaviour and pollen fertility for some South American species. Most of the Brazilian multifoliolate L. lanatus, L. rubriflorus, L. multiflorus, L. paranensis, L. bracteolaris and L. reitzii and unifoliolate L. crotalarioides, L. guaraniticus and L. velutinus accessions analysed presented regular chromosome pairing. Meiotic indexes and estimations of pollen viability were higher than 90% for all species and accessions analysed, reflecting the generally regular meiotic behaviour of these plants. Chromosome numbers were determined for the first time for the eastern South‐American species L. guaraniticus, L. crotalarioides, L. paranensis, L. paraguariensis and L. velutinus (n = 18 or 2n = 36) and for the Andean L. ballianus, L. eanophyllus, L. huaronensis, L. semperflorens, plus another eight taxa (2n = 48) from Peru and Bolivia, and L. bandelierae (2n = 36) from Bolivia. Chromosome numbers were confirmed for L. lanatus, L. rubriflorus (2n = 36), L. bracteolaris (2n = 34) and L. microphyllus (2n = 48). In the three accessions of the North American unifoliolate species, L. cumulicola and L. villosus, a chromosome number (2n = 52) previously unknown among American taxa was found. The results of the study, plus published data, support the suggestions that south‐eastern South American species are a group cytologically differentiated from the Andean as well as from most other American ones, and that the Brazilian and the North American unifoliolate Lupinus had independent origins. © 2006 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2006, 150 , 229–240.  相似文献

A giant form of Anadyomene, most similar to Anadyomene pavonina (J. Agardh) Wille, a rare and diminutive alga endemic to Florida, appeared as up to 10 m long net‐like strands covering 10%–80% of a 0.5 km region of the 25–50 m deep Belizean outer reef slope where none had been present up to 12 months earlier. This new species, described herein as Anadyomene gigantodictyon Littler et D. S. Littler, is characterized by a unistratose blade or cluster of blades formed by the polychotomous branching of uniseriate veins, with the interstices, or spaces between the veins, completely or partially filled with cells that are smaller than those of the veins, with cylindrical to ovate cells. The cells at mid‐blade are 1.7–2.0 mm in length and 0.2–0.3 mm diameter; interstitial cells are parallel and not juxtaposed. All cells are joined in one plane and form species‐specific, fan‐shaped patterns with secondary interstitial cells loosely or tightly woven.  相似文献

Schoenus (Cyperaceae) has holocentric chromosomes. Chromosome numbers were counted and nuclear DNA amounts were measured for all the New Zealand species of the genus. Chromosome numbers ranged from 2n = 8 to c. 2n = 90. Two chromosome races, with 2n = 28 and 2n = 56, were found in S. pauciflorus. Flow cytometry using propidium iodide‐stained nuclei was used to measure genome size. A 14.8‐fold variation in 2C DNA content was found, with values ranging from 1.33 to 19.71 pg/2C nucleus. Phylogenetic trees based on sequence variation in the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of the 45S ribosomal DNA locus were constructed using several phylogenetic models to reveal possible evolutionary relationships among the New Zealand Schoenus spp. and a sample of Australian Schoenus spp. Analysis revealed heterogeneity of chromosome number, size and DNA C value within clades. Meiosis in four species showed only bivalent formation at metaphase I. © 2012 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2012, 169 , 555–564.  相似文献

In fully developed parts of thalli ofLempholemma botryosum a relatively high number of algal cells is attacked by haustoria. They differ specifically in form and effect from haustoria of otherLempholemma species. Cells of theNostoc phycobiont attacked by hyphae developing into haustoria may divide to give inequal besides equal daughter cells.

Protoplasts isolated from thalli of four Porphyra species regenerated successfully into differentiated plantlets. The efficiency of protoplast isolation and the developmental patterns of the regenerating protoplasts depended on the type of tissues from which they were isolated. However, culture conditions greatly influenced the patterns of development at the cellular and organismal levels. Sorbitol, nitrogen, and agar concentration in the medium controlled rates of cell division, thickening of cell walls, development of rhizoids, and formation of calluses or differentiated blades. Agitation disturbed the attachment of the protoplasts to a substrate. Cells in agitated cultures produced suspensions of single cells and non-polarized small calluses. Calluses which developed from protoplasts survived in storage for over two years. The stored calluses, and cells and protoplasts that were isolated from them, were subcultured successfully. We forsee extensive use of Porphyra cell suspensions for strain selection and vegetative propagation of cultivars. This technology, which makes vegetative cloning of selected Porphyra plants possible, may eliminate the need for cultivation and storage of the conchocelis phase. Protoplasts are also being used as tools for studies in genetic engineering of these commercial species.  相似文献

Schulz -Schaeffer , Jurgen (Montana State Coll., Bozeman), and Peter Jurasits . Biosystematic investigations in the genus Agropyron. I. Cytological studies of species karyotypes. Amer. Jour. Bot. 49(9): 940–953. Illus. 1962.—Twenty-five species of the genus Agropyron are analyzed cytologically in this presentation. Accession numbers, names of collectors, locations where seed was collected, and observed chromosome numbers are listed. Chromosome numbers of A. panormitanum (2n = 28), A. lolioides (2n = 58), A. brachyphyllum (2n = 42), A. ciliatiflorum (2n = 28), A. kosanini (2n = 56), A. pseudorepens (2n = 28), A. squamosum (2n = 42), and A. subulatum (2n = 56) are reported. No previous counts in these species are known to the authors. Chromosome counts of A. caespitosum (2n = 42) and A. elongatiforme (2n = 58), deviate from previous reports. Idiograms of all species and photomicrographs of mitotic metaphase root tip cells of 14 species are presented. The distribution of 11 satellite-chromosome types in 25 Agropyron species is shown in Table 2. The proportions of these 11 satellite-chromosome types are recorded in Table 3. The significance of these satellite chromosomes as indicator chromosomes for genome relationships is discussed together with the pertinent literature.  相似文献

Vegetative and reproductive structures of the little‐known red alga, Meristotheca coacta Okamura (Solieriaceae, Gigartinales) were described on the basis of specimens collected from three localities in southern Japan, including an island close to the lectotype locality. Meristotheca coacta was shown to be a strongly supported monophyletic clade in our rbcL analyses. The taxonomic features of this species were reassessed. This species is characterized as follows: (i) the thalli consist of relatively thick (300–1400 μm from the uppermost to basal regions), elastic and rose‐red blades; (ii) the blades are irregularly lobed and branched into variously shaped segments with undulate and crispate margins; (iii) tetrasporangial initials are laterally attached to their parental cells and the lateral pit‐connections remain in mature tetrasporangia; (iv) gametophytes are dioecious; (v) carpogonial branches are three‐celled (occasionally two‐ or four‐celled); (vi) a darkly staining auxiliary cell complex is present and recognizable prior to diploidization; and (vii) cystocarps are produced along (or near) the margins of the blades and on the marginal proliferations and lack spinous outgrowths.  相似文献

Achiridae is an important family of the order Pleuronectiformes widely distributed in North, Central, and South America with freshwater and marine species. In the present study cytogenetic analyses comprising conventional and molecular techniques were carried out in seven species of this family. The following diploid numbers (2n) and fundamental numbers (FN) were obtained: Achirus declivis 2n = 34, FN = 52; Achirus lineatus 2n = 40, FN = 66; Catathyridium jenynsi 2n = 40 and FN = 50; Gymnachirus nudus 2n = 36 and FN = 50; Hypoclinemus mentalis 2n = 38 and FN = 54; Trinectes paulistanus 2n = 42 and FN = 52; and Trinectes sp. 2n = 38 and FN = 54. All species presented a single nucleolar organizer region (NOR) bearing chromosome pair and C-band positive segments mainly distributed at the pericentromeric position. The wide variation observed in chromosome number and FN suggests the occurrence of larger chromosome rearrangements in the family Achiridae if compared with other families of the same order.  相似文献

The functional organization of chromatin in cell nuclei is a fundamental question in modern cell biology. Individual chromosomes occupy distinct chromosome territories in interphase nuclei. Nuclear bodies localize outside the territories and colocalize with ectopically expressed proteins in a nuclear subcompartment, the interchromosomal domain compartment. In order to investigate the structure of this compartment in mammalian cells with distinctly different karyotypes, we analyzed human HeLa cells (3n+=71 chromosomes) and cells of two closely related muntjac species, the Chinese muntjac (2n=46 chromosomes) and the Indian muntjac (2n=6/7 chromosomes). The distribution of ectopically expressed intermediate filament proteins (vimentin and cytokeratins) engineered to contain a nuclear localization sequence (NLS) and a nuclear particle forming protein (murine Mx1) fused to a yellow fluorescent protein (YFP) was compared. The proteins were predominantly localized in regions with poor DAPI staining independent of the cells karyotype. In contrast to NLS-vimentin, the NLS-modified cytokeratins were also found close to the nuclear periphery. In Indian muntjac cells, NLS-vimentin colocalized with Mx1-YFP as well as the NLS-cytokeratins. Since the distribution of the ectopically expressed protein markers is similar in cells with distinctly different chromosome numbers, the property of the delineated, limited compartment might indeed depend on chromatin organization.  相似文献

Seven sites in Bahía de los Angeles, northern Gulf of California, were sampled seasonally over a three-year period. Five species of brown algae previously not recorded from this bay were identified: Ralfsia pacifica, Sporochnus balleanus, Hydroclathrus clathratus, Colpomenia sinuosa and Padina mexicana. Of these, H. clathratus also provided a new record for the northern Gulf of California. One species previously recorded from the bay, Dictyopteris undulata, was not observed. On a seasonal basis, temperature and biodiversity showed an inverse relationship: highest species numbers occurred in spring, when temperatures were lowest, and lowest species numbers occurred in autumn when temperatures were highest. Most species of brown algae in Baífa de los Angeles are annuals.  相似文献

Polyploidy is a fundamental mechanism in evolution, but is hard to detect in taxa with agmatoploidy or aneuploidy. We tested whether a combination of chromosome counting, microsatellite analyses and flow cytometric measurements represents a suitable approach for the detection of basic chromosome numbers and ploidy in Kobresia (Cyperaceae). Chromosome counting resulted in 2n = 64 for Kobresia pygmaea and K. cercostachys, 2n = 58 and 64 for K. myosuroides, and 2n = 72 for K. simpliciuscula. We characterized eight microsatellite loci for K. pygmaea, which gave a maximum of four alleles per individual. Cross‐species amplification was tested in 26 congeneric species and, on average, six of eight loci amplified successfully. Using flow cytometry, we confirmed tetraploidy in K. pygmaea. Basic chromosome numbers and ploidy were inferred from chromosome counts and the maximum number of alleles per locus. We consider the basic numbers as x = 16 and 18, with irregularities derived from agmatoploidy and aneuploidy. Across all Kobresia taxa, ploidy ranged from diploid up to heptaploid. The combination of chromosome counts and microsatellite analyses is an ideal method for the determination of basic chromosome numbers and for inferring ploidy, and flow cytometry is a suitable tool for the identification of deviating cytotypes. © 2014 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2014, 176 , 22–35.  相似文献

Translocation patterns in the giant kelp, Macrocystis integrifolia Bory, were investigated in situ using 14C tracer; sources and sinks were identified. Export was first detected after 4 h of labeling; experiments were routinely 24 h continuous 14C application. Mature blades exported 14C to young blades on the same frond and on younger fronds, as well as to sporophylls and frond initials at the bases of the fronds. Blades <0.3 m from the apex imported and did not export; this distance did not change seasonally. In spring export from blades 0.3–1.25 m from the apex was exclusively upwards; older blades also exported downwards. In fall downward export began 0.5 m from the apex, and blades >2 m from the apex exported exclusively downwards. Carbon imported by frond initials, young fronds, and sporophylls in fall may partly be stored for growth in early spring. No translocation was seen in very young plants until one blade (secondary frond initial) bad been freed from the apical blade; this blade exported to the apical blade for a time, but imported when it began to develop into a frond. The second and third formed blades on the primary fronds (sporophylls also exported when <0.3 m from the apex, and later stopped. Frond initials and sporophylls on later-formed fronds did not export at all. The translocation pattern in M. integrifolia differs from that previously reported in M. pyrifera in seasonal change and in distances from the apex at which the changes take place.  相似文献
