Data are presented on laying date and clutch size (n) of Blackcap Sylvia atricapilla (1434), Song Thrush Turdus philomelos (298), Garden Warbler S. borin (260), Yellowhammer Emberiza citrinella (254), Blackbird T. merula (231), Chaffinch Fringilla coelebs (206), Chiffchaff Phylloscopus collybita (202), Icterine Warbler Hippolais icterina (95) and Dunnock Prunella modularis (89), recorded during an intensive study (since 1993) in woodland habitats of Eastern Bohemia, Czech Republic (49 °54 ′N, 16 °02 ′E). Results are compared with two other data sets (a local study and national nest record scheme) collected by Czech volunteer ornithologists during 1945–85 and with other published data from central Europe. There is no evidence that the laying dates and clutch size of the nine species changed at the regional scale over the past decades, and mean values generally match their known geographical variability. Significant species differences were found among the three Czech data sets in both laying dates and clutch size. Most of the differences could be explained as an artefact of seasonally biased sampling of nests, which in turn influenced mean clutch size. Even a systematic study with a standard searching effort on fixed plots provided biased data for some species.  相似文献

Field boundary characteristics influencing territory establishment and nesting success of Whitethroats and Yellowhammers on farmland in Leicestershire were investigated. Hedge height had a negative influence on the presence of breeding Whitethroats. The abundance of herbaceous vegetation in field boundaries had a positive influence on both species. The relationship was strongest for Whitethroats which nested almost exclusively in herbaceous vegetation. Nesting success of Whitethroats was higher than that of Yellowhammers. Yellowhammer nests in hedges were more susceptible to predation than those in herbaceous vegetation. Maintaining low hedges and establishing uncut 2-m strips of perennial herbaceous vegetation in field boundaries would contribute to the conservation of Whitethroats and Yellowhammers on farmland.  相似文献

The management of wild gamebirds for shooting involves a combination of habitat management (woodland, field boundaries and game crops), winter feeding and control of potential nest predators, any of which could benefit other birds, including nationally declining species associated with farmland habitats. Changes in numbers of passerines were monitored over six years in relation to game management on farmland in Leicestershire. Nest success was monitored over four years and, for some species, was inversely related to abundance of breeding corvids. Abundance of breeding passerines increased during the period of game management. Species whose breeding populations have declined nationally (coincident with agricultural intensification) showed the greatest increases in abundance relative both to other species, and to the same nationally declining species in nearby farmland. The precise mechanism by which the game management package contributes to increased breeding numbers is not understood and is likely to differ between species. However, these results show that further integration of wild game management into farming systems could have conservation benefits for nationally declining farmland birds.  相似文献

Many European countries have annual breeding bird monitoring schemes based on nationwide samples; most are in northern and western Europe. We have developed a method to produce yearly population indices of bird species across countries by combining the results of existing national schemes. The method takes into account the differences in population sizes per country, as well as the differences in field methods, and the numbers of sites and years covered by the national schemes. In order to test the method, we collected raw data from a number of countries and applied an index method to produce scheme results per country. Data were collected for five farmland species (Lapwing Vanellus vanellus, Linnet Carduelis cannabina, Skylark Alauda arvensis, Whitethroat Sylvia communis and Yellowhammer Emberiza citrinella), from seven countries (UK, Netherlands, Denmark, Germany, Finland, Latvia and Estonia) for a 20-year period (1978–97). The trial demonstrated that it was possible to combine national indices to provide supra-national yearly totals and their standard errors; the results were similar to those produced when the raw data were used. Thus, yearly European indices can be produced by exchanging only limited amounts of information, that is the national yearly indices of each species or, preferably, the yearly population numbers and their standard errors. At a European scale, the populations of the five species selected have changed considerably. In western Europe (UK, Netherlands, Denmark and former West Germany combined), Linnet, Skylark and Yellowhammer have declined and Whitethroat has increased. Most changes occurred during the first ten-year period (1978–88). The changes in eastern Europe (the remaining countries) were less clear, in part because the statistical power of the national schemes is as yet limited.  相似文献

Capsule Negative forest edge effects were detected for Willow Ptarmigan (Red Grouse) Lagopus lagopus and Dunlin Calidris alpina.

Aims To investigate the effects of distance to forest on the abundance and changes in abundance of four key peatland breeding bird species, and to measure changes in predatory bird numbers, in the peatlands of northern Scotland.

Methods Bird surveys were carried out in 2000 at 34 plots, covering 197 km2 of peatland, and 80 forestry point‐count sites, first surveyed in 1988. Habitat data were also collected in 2000. We used multi‐model inference to investigate the associations between forest distance and other habitat variables, and the abundance, and changes in abundance, of four bird species of economic or conservation importance: Red Grouse, European Golden Plover Pluvialis apricaria, Dunlin and Common Greenshank Tringa nebularia.

Results There was strong evidence that distance to forest was negatively associated with Dunlin abundance and changes in Red Grouse abundance, but only weak evidence for negative associations with Golden Plover abundance and changes in Dunlin abundance. There was no evidence of a forest distance effect on Greenshank. Among predatory birds, there were no significant increases either on peatland plots or in new forestry plantations.

Conclusions This study provides evidence that, for a given habitat quality, Dunlin densities are lower, and Red Grouse declines more likely, near to forest edges, but weak evidence only that Dunlin declines are more likely, and Golden Plover abundance lower, near to forests. These results suggest that for at least two key peatland breeding birds, forest removal is likely to benefit birds breeding on adjacent unafforested peatland.  相似文献

We used the morphological differentiation of southern, sedentary Iberian Blackcaps Sylvia atricapilla to distinguish them from migratory Blackcaps during the winter. To do so, we studied three morphometric traits (wing length, wing shape and tail length) of three migratory Iberian populations and two sedentary ones during the breeding season. We obtained a discriminant function which allowed us to differentiate the two population types (>90% correct classifications). We discuss the utility of the method for differentiating between sedentary and migratory Blackcaps in their sympatric wintering areas, as well as the implications of our results for the study and conservation of sedentary, perhaps differentiated Blackcaps in southern Iberia.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to describe the songbird communities occupying willow and poplar short rotation coppice (SRC) crops during the breeding season, and to identify the features of existing plantations that affect their abundance. Songbird point-counts were undertaken at 66 different plots of SRC at 29 sites throughout Britain and Ireland during spring 1993. Measures of vegetation and coppice management in each plot were also taken. The songbird species using the SRC survey plots were similar to those reported from traditional coppice habitats. Willow SRC contained more resident and migrant songbird species than poplar SRC. Warbler species and buntings in particular were rarely recorded from poplar plots. Finches, tits and thrushes were recorded equally from both willow and poplar. More migrant species were recorded from year 2 willow coppice (i.e. in its third growth season since winter cutting) than in either year 1 or year 3. Most resident species selected older willow or poplar coppice growth up to year 3 or 4, the oldest age classes in the sample. These 4-year trends for migrant and resident songbirds are similar to those observed in traditional coppice woodland over a 10- or 12-year rotation. Skylark and Meadow Pipit were recorded from recently cut SRC plots (year 0). In a regression analysis, the number of songbird species and individuals, particularly migrants, were found to be positively related to the increased structural density or complexity of the coppice vegetation.  相似文献

Capsule Arthropods are the most important diet component of Great Bustards Otis tarda in the first months of life.

Aims To determine the diet composition of young Great Bustards in Spain.

Methods The diet was estimated by stomach content analysis (n?=?49).

Results Stomach contents' dry weight consisted of 33% arthropods, 30% green plant material and 23% seeds. Gastroliths were only found in summer and autumn. The diet composition changed significantly between seasons. In summer, diet consisted mainly of arthropods (50%), with green plant material being the main component in winter (56%). Volume of stomach contents and mean size of ingested arthropods were higher in males than in females. Diet composition did not differ between sexes. In summer, ground-dwelling and plant-visiting arthropods such as Mantidae, Tenebrionidae and caterpillars were the most abundant. In winter, weeds, legumes and cultivated seeds were more frequent than arthropods. Cereal plants were the least consumed in all seasons, although Barley and Wheat seeds played an important role during winter and autumn.

Conclusion The results highlight the importance of arthropods and weeds as a fundamental component of the diet of young Great Bustards. Because previous studies show that arthropods and weeds are usually more abundant in extensive farming, we recommend the implementation of agri-environmental measures in Great Bustard breeding areas.  相似文献

A survey of breeding Cirl Buntings in the United Kingdom and the Channel Islands was undertaken in 1998. An estimated 453 (95% CI, 415–504) territories were recorded in 103 tetrads in Devon. This amounts to an increase of 29% in the Devon population since the last full survey in 1993, when 352 territories were recorded in 95 tetrads. In addition, nine territories were located on the island of Jersey in 1998 although none were found elsewhere. In 1993 there were 18 singing males on Jersey with a further two in both Cornwall and Somerset. The Cirl Bunting population in Devon seems to be consolidating rather than expanding as the only significant increase in numbers between 1993 and 1998 was from those tetrads occupied in both years. This paper also summarizes the results of surveys during 1989–97 and assesses the changes in the Cirl Bunting population over that period.  相似文献

Observations of Yellowhammers flying from nests to foraging sites were used to assess use of foraging habitats in relation to availability. Selection of invertebrates by foraging Yellowhammers was studied using analysis of nestling faecal samples in relation to invertebrate samples taken from farmland habitats. Both data sets were analysed using compositional analysis. Broad-leaved crops and sparsely vegetated areas were favoured early in the breeding season, but cereal crops were increasingly used as these ripened. Unripe cereal grain formed a major component of nestling diet, but invertebrates were fed to all broods. Lepidoptera larvae, Araneae and Tipulidae were consumed more than other invertebrate groups. Nestling mortality was high during cold weather when these invertebrates would have been inactive. We suggest that farming systems that increase habitat diversity and reduce pesticide application to arable crops will benefit Yellowhammers and other farmland buntings.  相似文献

Migrant Dunnocks Prunella modularis are common winter visitors to the Mediterranean area. In a burnt forest, Dunnocks were present from October to April. They occupied definite individual home ranges of 0.18 ha on average (n = 83), at a density of 30 birds/10 ha in the fifth winter and 18 birds/10 ha in the sixth winter following a fire. Birds used visible posts and uttered ‘tseep’ calls often. Counter-calling was particularly frequent in the winter with the highest population density. In a burnt maquis, Dunnocks showed return rates (15%) and median recapture distances (62.5 m) not significantly different from those of territorial wintering Robins Erithacus rubecula. We suggest that Dunnock ranges can be regarded as ‘feeding territories’, promoted by an abundant, predictible and renewable food supply of rock-rose Cistus spp. seeds, characteristic of early Mediterranean successions. Ownership might be proclaimed by ‘tseep’ calls, recalling the behaviour of female Dunnocks during prebreeding territorial conflicts. Further research using colour-ringed birds may confirm Dunnock winter territoriality, exceptional for a migrant and mostly granivorous passerine.  相似文献

The effects of post-fire changes in vegetation and habitat quality on the developmental stability of individual birds have not been assessed to date. Here we compare fluctuating asymmetry in tail feathers of Sardinian Warblers Sylvia melanocephala inhabiting two shrubby zones, the first burned in both 1982 and 1994 and the second only in 1982. Juveniles with unmoulted rectrices showed significantly higher levels of tail feather asymmetry in the zone burned in 1994. This result is consistent with the hypothesis that recently burned shrublands offer lower quality habitats for this species. Because feather asymmetry was positively and significantly related to the abundance of low shrubs up to 50 cm tall, we suggest that juvenile assessment of habitat quality is primarily based on the structure of the shrub layer.  相似文献

This report described the isolation and purification of the polysaccharide from Prunella vugaris L. (PP2). The best combination of isolation conditions had been obtained through the orthogonal experiment. Paper Chromatography , agarose gel electrophoresis and ultraviolet spectroscopy had been introduced to determine the purity of the PP2 and fractional deposition and gas chromatography had been applied to analyze the monosaccharide constituents of PP2. By the chemical simulation in vitro, the antioxidant activity of PP2 had been studied . The results of the experiment showed that PP2 had significant scavenging effect on oxide radical, hydroxide radical and univalent radical NO2 but poor scavenging effect on organic radical. PP2 could prevent the membrane lipid from peroxidation and reduce hemolysis of red cells and production of MDA as well .  相似文献

Capsule This study examines the relationship between habitat variables and various aspects of breeding and foraging performance for 257 Barn Owl breeding attempts involving both released and wild birds, at 86 different nest‐sites over a 14‐year period.

Aims The study aimed to: (1) provide evidence for or against the importance of foraging habitat in Barn Owl breeding performance; (2) enable identification of areas which can, and those which cannot, be expected to sustain Barn Owl populations; (3) inform the compilation of any future guidelines such that Barn Owl release schemes are more likely to succeed; and (4) allow the revision of untested concerns in terms of the likely survival or otherwise of Barn Owls in a given area.

Methods Three data sources are used to assess the proportions of various habitat types and lengths of linear features in the vicinity of each nest: (1) The Centre for Ecology and Hydrology Land Cover Map; (2) Ordnance Survey Strategi dataset; and (3) Agricultural Census data. These are linked to various aspects of breeding performance.

Results Despite the size of the dataset, the number of significant correlations between habitat type and aspects of Barn Owl breeding success was similar to that expected by chance. Sites with more unimproved grassland within 1 km of the nest did not differ from those with less, except by a significant advancement of first‐egg date.

Conclusion The paucity of significant results may be evidence that Barn Owls are in fact rather catholic and adaptable in their habitat requirements, and not as dependent upon large areas of Field Vole (or other) habitat as has often been stated.  相似文献

We isolated 10 polymorphic microsatellite DNA loci from the blackcap (Sylvia atricapilla) and optimized them for future studies of population differentiation in populations with different migration strategies in southwestern Germany. The loci were screened for polymorphism using 178 individuals from two populations in Germany and Spain. The primers amplified highly variable loci characterized by two to 19 alleles per locus and their observed and expected heterozygosities range from 0.47 to 0.81 and from 0.50 to 0.91, respectively.  相似文献
