Summary Samples of Antarctic krill E. superba from six locations near Prydz Bay were analysed electrophoretically to detect genetically-based protein variation. Analyses of allele distributions at four polymorphic loci indicate no evidence of significant heterogeneity, a result consistent with the hypothesis that all samples were derived from a single breeding population of krill. The results of this study agree closely with genetic data from other studies on krill in the Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean, suggesting that krill stocks over at least 6000 km of Antarctic waters are derived from a single interbreeding population.  相似文献

Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba; hereafter krill) are an incredibly abundant pelagic crustacean which has a wide, but patchy, distribution in the Southern Ocean. Several studies have examined the potential for population genetic structuring in krill, but DNA‐based analyses have focused on a limited number of markers and have covered only part of their circum‐Antarctic range. We used mitochondrial DNA and restriction site‐associated DNA sequencing (RAD‐seq) to investigate genetic differences between krill from five sites, including two from East Antarctica. Our mtDNA results show no discernible genetic structuring between sites separated by thousands of kilometres, which is consistent with previous studies. Using standard RAD‐seq methodology, we obtained over a billion sequences from >140 krill, and thousands of variable nucleotides were identified at hundreds of loci. However, downstream analysis found that markers with sufficient coverage were primarily from multicopy genomic regions. Careful examination of these data highlights the complexity of the RAD‐seq approach in organisms with very large genomes. To characterize the multicopy markers, we recorded sequence counts from variable nucleotide sites rather than the derived genotypes; we also examined a small number of manually curated genotypes. Although these analyses effectively fingerprinted individuals, and uncovered a minor laboratory batch effect, no population structuring was observed. Overall, our results are consistent with panmixia of krill throughout their distribution. This result may indicate ongoing gene flow. However, krill's enormous population size creates substantial panmictic inertia, so genetic differentiation may not occur on an ecologically relevant timescale even if demographically separate populations exist.  相似文献

Genetic homogeneity of krill (Euphausia superba Dana) in the Southern Ocean   总被引:2,自引:1,他引:1
Summary Development of a comprehensive picture of the genetic population structure of the Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) has been hampered by a lack of genetic data from two major areas of the species' distribution, the Bellingshausen Sea and the Ross Sea. Evidence from earlier studies of a discrete Bellingshausen Sea population was based on anomalous allele frequencies in two sample sets that were collected near the west coast of the Antarctic Peninsula rather than in the Bellingshausen Sea proper. In this paper we describe the first biochemical genetic data obtained on krill from the central Bellingshausen Sea and from the Ross Sea. Analyses of eight polymorphic loci in samples from these two areas have failed to provide any evidence of population structuring within the Pacific sector of the Southern Ocean, and have indicated that Pacific sector krill cannot be genetically discriminated from Atlantic sector krill or Indian Ocean sector krill. These findings further support the hypothesis of a single circumpolar breeding population of Antarctic krill.  相似文献

Due to their global distribution, high biomass and energy content, euphausiids (krill) are important prey for many mid and upper trophic level marine organisms. Understanding drivers of krill habitat is essential for forecasting range shifts, and to better understand the response of krill predators to climate change. We hypothesized that the distribution and abundance of krill species derived from ecosystem surveys in spring/summer relates to geomorphic features, coastal upwelling during the preceding winter, and spring mesoscale oceanographic conditions. To test this hypothesis, we used boosted regression trees with environmental data and ocean model output to quantify the habitat associations of two primary krill species (Euphausia pacifica and Thysanoessa spinifera) in the central California Current Ecosystem from 2002 to 2018. Models confirmed the neritic distribution of T. spinifera and pelagic, outer slope association of E. pacifica (deviance explained ~35%). Distribution of these species were influenced by depth and bottom rugosity; chlorophyll-a concentrations and increased winter upwelling conditions; and spring surface currents and wind stress. Thysanoessa spinifera and E. pacifica abundance responded negatively (positively) to warm (cold) climate events, confirming known relationships. As an independent evaluation of krill models, observations of krill predator (seabirds, marine mammals) distribution indicated they were present within habitats of predicted high krill species abundance. Our framework indicates species-specific habitat relationships for these foundational forage species and their negative response to large-scale climate variations, such as El Niño and marine heatwave conditions. The approach can be easily transferred to other ecosystems or krill species that respond to similar ocean and climate forcing.  相似文献

Summary Samples of Antarctic krill Euphausia superba from 16 locations in the Weddell Sea, Scotia Sea and on the west coast of the Antarctic Peninsula were analysed for protein variation using enzyme electrophoresis techniques. Analysis of allele distributions indicate that samples from all locations are part of a single breeding population of krill. Significant departures from random mating expectations were observed in the distribution of electrophoretic phenotypes of the enzymes esterase and glucose phosphate isomerase. Possible explorations of these results are advanced, but they do not materially affect conclusions concerning population structure. The spatial and temporal distribution of electrophoretically detected genetic variation in Atlantic and Pacific sector krill stocks is discussed by comparing the results of this study with those of previous authors working with E. superba.  相似文献

Summary The spring (November) and early summer (December) distribution pattern and demography of Euphausia superba in the seasonally ice covered areas of the north-western Weddell Sea are described. Sampling with a Rectangular Midwater Trawl (RMT) and during SCUBA diving were undertaken in the pack-ice during the EPOS expedition 1988/1989 of RV Polarstern. These data were compared with former cruises during late winter (October) and summer (February). The biomass values of krill (1–27 g/m2) in the water column within the ice covered areas were of the same order of magnitude as earlier acoustic estimates in the ice-edge region of the same area. No significant correlation between percentage ice cover and krill abundance in the water column was found. Cluster analyses of size frequency distributions and maturity stage composition revealed the demography of the animals sampled. Samples obtained by SCUBA and RMT are compatible and results show a geographic and demographic separation of the krill. It is proposed that krill in the northern zone are largely emigrants from the Bellingshausen Sea, while the krill in the southern zone are of eastern Weddell Sea origin. Further studies concentrating on the under-ice distribution of krill are recommended.Data presented here were collected during the European Polarstern Study (EPOS) sponsored by the European Science Foundation. A dedicated aerial cetacean survey was conducted concurrently to a standardised net trawl survey for krill in order to investigate distribution patterns of large whales and different krill species and to investigate relationships of these. Distance sampling data were used to produce density surface models for humpback (Megaptera novaeangliae) and fin whales (Balaenoptera physalus) around the West Antarctic Peninsula (WAP). Abundance for both species was estimated over two strata in the Bransfield Strait and Drake Passage. Distinct distribution patterns suggest horizontal niche partitioning of the two whale species around the WAP, with fin whales aggregating at the shelf edge of the South Shetland Islands in the Drake Passage and humpback whales in the Bransfield Strait. Krill biomass estimated from the concurrent krill survey was used along with CTD data from the same expedition, bathymetric parameters and satellite data on chlorophyll-a and ice concentration to model krill distribution. Comparisons of the predicted distributions of both whale species with the predicted distributions of Euphausia superba, Euphausia crystallorophias and Thysanoessa macrura suggest a complex relationship rather than a straightforward correlation between krill and whales. However, results indicate that fin whales were feeding in an area dominated by T. macrura, while humpback whales were found in areas of higher E. superba biomass. Our results provide abundance estimates for humpback whales and, for the first time, fin whales in the WAP and contribute important information on feeding ecology and habitat use of these two species in the Southern Ocean.  相似文献

Seven polymorphic microsatellite loci were characterized in the marine encrusting sponge Crambe crambe from a partial genomic DNA‐enriched library. Preliminary data on allelic variation of these loci in two distant populations of C. crambe are presented to assess their potential utility as high‐resolution genetic markers for this species. The number of alleles per locus ranged between three and 16 and the distributions of allele frequencies differed considerably between the two populations, indicating a marked genetic differentiation between them. These are the first microsatellite loci reported from any species in the phylum.  相似文献

To explore the impact of history on selection and genetic structure at functional loci, we compared patterns of major histocompatibility complex (MHC) variability in two sympatric species of ctenomyid rodents with different demographic backgrounds. Although Ctenomys talarum has experienced a stable demographic history, Ctenomys australis has undergone a recent demographic expansion. Accordingly, we predicted that MHC allele frequency distributions should be more skewed, differences between coding and noncoding regions should be less pronounced, and evidence of current selection on MHC loci should be reduced in C. australis relative to C. talarum. To test these predictions, we compared variation at the MHC class II DRB and DQA genes with that at multiple neutral markers, including DQA intron 2, the mitochondrial control region, and 8–12 microsatellite loci. These analyses supported the first two of our predictions but indicated that estimates of selection (based on ω‐values) were greater for C. australis. Further exploration of these data, however, revealed differences in the time frames over which selection appears to have acted on each species, with evidence of contemporary selection on MHC loci being limited to C. talarum. Collectively, these findings indicate that demographic history can substantially influence genetic structure at functional loci and that the effects of history on selection may be temporally complex and dynamic. © 2010 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2010, 99 , 260–277.  相似文献

Summary Meiotic chromosomes of antarctic krill, Euphausia superba Dana, collected at Admiralty Bay, are described and the method used to obtain this genetic material is reported. Forty seven dividing meiotic nuclei at diakinesis and metaphase I from seminal glands of four males were examined, all with n= 17 bivalents. The results were compared with those obtained by other workers using krill specimens from the opposite side of the Antarctic continent and apparent differences in chromosome numbers were observed. Possible reasons for these differences and the potential for using cytogenetic techniques to study populations of krill are discussed.  相似文献

Physiological data are needed for life history studies on krill, and as parameters for input into energy budgets and models. In conjunction with moult and growth data, these may also prove useful for assessing the fishable biomass of krill. Here, the development of physiological concepts in experimental krill research is briefly evaluated, with emphasis on the gaps to be filled. Krill growth is very flexible, as well as strongly temperature and nutrition dependent. The polar Antarctic krill Euphausia superba grows as fast as the boreal species Meganyctiphanes norvegica, at least during the first 2.5 years, and the species are comparable in terms of physiological plasticity. Accordingly, as krill appear to adjust quickly to specific laboratory conditions, short-term experiments are essential if field conditions are to be reflected as closely as possible. Furthermore, direct comparisons between laboratory experiments and swarming studies in the field are advantageous. For these, M. norvegica is particularly well-suited, as swarms can be followed over longer times and more easily than in E. superba. For example, processes of moult and reproduction were found to be highly coordinated in swarms and populations of Northern krill. For this species a conceptual model of reproduction was developed based on a combination of short-term laboratory observations coupled with field data on moult and ovary stages. In further physiological experiments krill should be studied as groups when swarming. Using proxies, that is applying physiological and/or biochemical methods side by side, is a promising way to enhance the reliability of life history data.  相似文献

The influence of two sampling protocols on diet determination of two marine predators, the gentoo penguin (Pygoscelis papua) and Antarctic fur seal (Arctocephalus gazella), was investigated. The collection of diet samples on three occasions over a 2-week period was compared with collecting all samples during a single session, as current CCAMLR Ecosystem Monitoring Programme protocols recommend. Some differences in the mass of food recovered from penguins were found but this was attributed to the mass of penguin sampled. There were no differences in diet composition between protocols and although body mass was a significant determinant of the mean length of krill Euphausia superba recovered from penguins, there were no differences between sampling protocols. This study has shown that differences between sampling frequencies are small and a variety of sampling protocols can produce results acceptable for inter-annual monitoring. The mass of sampled individuals can account for significant variation and should be recorded, especially if sampling frequencies and sizes are low. Accepted: 24 March 1999  相似文献

Unusual phenotypic distributions at the muscle-specific, duplicate aspartate aminotransferase (AAT) loci were found in wild populations of brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis), a species of the tetraploid-derivative Salmonidae. Analysis of these phenotypic distributions ruled out disparate gene frequencies, nonrandom association between the two loci, and inbreeding as possible explanations; however, models incorporating a null allele fit the data. Inheritance data from hatchery populations of brook trout also indicated a null allele polymorphism. This proposed AAT null allele, along with other null allele polymorphisms in salmonids, is evidence that loss of duplicate gene expression is still occurring. In contrast, there is no such evidence of ongoing loss of duplicate gene expression in the Catostomidae, another tetraploid-derivative lineage. We interpret this and other differences between salmonids and catostomids as reflecting an autotetraploid origin for salmonids and an allotetraploid origin for catostomids. The significance of these findings is also considered with respect to current models of the rate of loss of duplicate gene expression in tetraploid-derivative organisms.  相似文献

Summary 108 successful ground and Agassiz trawl catches were taken between 155 and 2031 m depth in the eastern Weddell Sea on board RV Polarstern in spring and summer (October–February) 1985–1989. In addition, 7 hauls were taken with a semipelagic trawl. Only 19 hauls (16.5%) contained no shrimps. The others yielded large numbers of Notocrangon antarcticus, Chorismus antarcticus, and Nematocarcinus lanceopes as well as 20 Lebbeus antarcticus and 11 specimens of an Eualus species new to science. 8 Pasiphaea scotiae were caught in a pelagic krill trawl. No reptant decapod crustaceans were detected in the study area. Shrimp densities determined from trawl catches were lower than estimates derived from underwater photography but in the same order of magnitude. Although yields of the three common shrimp species in some cases exceeded 20 kg per 0.5 h haul, shrimp stocks in the area cannot be considered to be of commercial significance. A wider geographical distribution and greater frequency of shrimps in high Antarctic waters was found than described hitherto. There was considerable variation in numbers, sex composition, occurrence at different depths, and size-frequency distributions. C. antarcticus and N. antarcticus grow to a larger size compared with individuals from the Antarctic Peninsula area. Within the area of investigation, length frequency distributions are skewed towards larger sizes at higher latitudes. In the eastern Weddell Sea larger specimens of the three common species live at greater depths than smaller individuals. Potential reasons for these differences are discussed.AWI Publication No. 124  相似文献

This study presents data on krill demography west of the Antarctic Peninsula covering many years since 1982. The recruitment indices are compared with those for other mesoscale study regions collected over the last 25 years. We use these data to investigate whether results from such mesoscale surveys are representative of large-scale stocks or regional populations. Generally, the proportional recruitment indices for 1- (R1) and 2-year-old (R2) krill differ substantially between years for a given area. However, indices were in conformity with the results from other regional scientific surveys. Recruitment indices showed a significant correlation for age-class 1 krill between scientific surveys from the northern Bellingshausen Sea, the Elephant Island area and South Georgia. The correlation becomes weaker for R2 recruitment indices. There was no correlation between krill recruitment indices from Atlantic and Indian Ocean survey sites. Problems of single-year outliers from Elephant Island are discussed, as well as the problem of "undersized" length classes of the age-1 group that occur in the samples of some years.  相似文献

Gastric evacuation experiments, performed with groups of Atlantic mackerel Scomber scombrus and three different prey species: sprat Sprattus sprattus , sandeel Ammodytes marinus and krill Meganectyphanes norwegicus , revealed a strong temperature effect on gastric evacuation ( Q 10=4.l) and a curvilinear evacuation with a shape intermediate between the square root and the exponential model. From the experiments with krill, where no internal tagging was possible, the medians and upper quartiles of the stomach content distributions were analysed instead of individual data. From these experiments the evacuation rate of krill was 60% higher than that of sandeel. An additional simulation study confirmed that the use of medians results in more accurate estimates of the evacuation rates when compared to the arithmetic means.  相似文献

Summary The aim of the experiment was to determine if the estimated genetic distance between two populations could be used to predict the amount of heterosis that would occur when they were crossed. Eight lines of known relatedness to each other were produced by eight generations of sib mating and sub-lining. This produced lines that varied in coefficient of coancestry from zero to 0.78. Fourteen reciprocal crosses of these lines were used to measure heterosis for larval viability and adult fecundity. Gene frequencies at six polymorphic enzyme loci were used to estimate the genetic distances between lines, which were then compared with the known degrees of coancestry. The estimated genetic differences were poorly correlated with the known coancestry coefficients (r=0.4), possibly due to the small number of loci typed. Also genetic distances were only about 1/3 of what was expected. Selection acting on blocks of genes linked to the enzyme loci probably prevented the expected increase in homozygosity. Coancestry coefficient was correlated with heterosis (r=0.44–0.71). This level of correlation implied differences in heterosis among parent lines with the same level of coancestry. This variability is expected if a small number of loci explain most of the heterosis. The average level of heterosis was less than expected after eight generations of sib mating. This is most likely due to selection opposing the increase in homozygosity caused by inbreeding. The combination of these two imperfect correlations resulted in no significant correlation between genetic distance estimated from markers and heterosis.  相似文献

Productivity in the oceans is heightened around oceanographic and bathymetric features such as fronts and islands. This can have a flow-on effect, providing increased food availability for higher trophic level species. Using data from a 5-day combined visual and acoustic survey, we examined the hypothesis that higher Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) density provides a lucrative resource for humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) at a remote Antarctic feeding area, the Balleny Islands (67oS, 164°E). We assessed whale presence at the feeding area in relation to prey (krill), productivity and environmental variables using density surface modeling. We found stark differences between krill swarms near the islands and those in adjacent open water. Swarms were twice as dense and three times more numerous near the Balleny Islands compared to an open water pelagic environment, suggesting that the islands offered a profitable feeding opportunity. At the feeding area, whales were found in deeper and more productive waters with medium krill densities. These relationships, along with the high krill availability around the islands, may be the result of the Island Mass Effect.  相似文献

Dietary segregation of krill-eating South Georgia seabirds   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5

The diets of six of the main seabird species (two petrels, two albatrosses, two penguins) breeding at Bird Island, South Georgia were studied simultaneously during the chick-rearing period in 1986. For five species, Antarctic krill Euphausia superba was the main food (39–98% by mass); grey-headed albatrosses took mainly the ommastrephid squid Martialia hyadesi (71%) and only 16% krill. The size of the krill taken was similar between seabird species, although there were small but significant differences between penguins and the other species. Sex and reproductive status of krill, however, was different between all seabird species, reflecting some combination of differences in foraging ranges, selectivity by predators, or differences in escape responses of krill. For the krill-eating species, the rest of the diet varied substantially between species, comprising Martialia and nototheniid fish (blackbrowed albatross and, along with lanternfish, white-chinned petrel), lanternfish and amphipods (Antarctic prion and macaroni penguin), and icefish (gentoo penguin). Long-term data on breeding success and information on diet in 5–10 other years suggest that in 1986 seabird diet and reproductive performance was indicative of a year of good availability of krill around South Georgia. In such circumstances, ecological segregation between krill-eating species appears to be maintained chiefly by differences in foraging range and feeding methods, which are reviewed. This situation is rather different from the few studies of seabird communities elsewhere, where prey type and size are believed to be the main mechanisms of dietary segregation.  相似文献
