Fossil fuels are the lifeblood of our society and for many others around the world. The environmental pollution due to the use of fossil fuels as well as their gradual depletion make it necessary to find alternative energy and chemical sources that are environmentally friendly and renewable. Palm oil mill effluent (POME), a strong wastewater from palm oil mills, has been identified as a potential source to generate renewable bioenergies through anaerobic digestion. Thus, it has received considerable attention as feedstock for producing various value added products such as methane gas, bio-plastic, organic acids, bio-compost, activated carbon, and animal feedstock. Lipids are one of the major organic pollutants in POME. Furthermore, waste lipids are ideal potential substrates for biogas production, since theoretically more methane can be produced, when compared with proteins or carbohydrates. The objective of this review paper is to disscuss the microbial communities involved in the anaerobic degradation of long chain fatty acid and bioenergies and by-products from POME. With these options (Renewable and sustainable bioenergies) we can help phase out our dependency on fossil fuels and find clean, efficient, sources of power.  相似文献

The development of alternative sources for energy and chemicals, particularly the use of plant biomass as a renewable resource for fuel or chemical feedstocks has received much recent attention. This report reviews the chemical utilization of plant materials for liquid fuels or organic chemicals, and presents the possibility of producing hydrocarbon and related chemical products, directly or indirectly, from extant plants rather than from fossil sources such as petroleum or coal.  相似文献

Environmental concerns and depletion of fossil fuels along with government policies have led to the search for alternative fuels from various renewable and sustainable feedstocks. This review provides a critical overview of the chemical composition of common commercial plant oils, i.e., palm oil, olive oil, rapeseed oil, castor oil, WCO, and CTO and their recent trends toward potential biofuel production. Plant oils with a high energy content are primarily composed of triglycerides (generally >?95%), accompanied by diglycerides, monoglycerides, and free fatty acids. The heat content of plant oils is close to 90% for diesel fuels. The oxygen content is the most important difference in chemical composition between fossil oils and plant oils. Triglycerides can even be used directly in diesel engines. However, their high viscosity, low volatility, and poor cold flow properties can lead to engine problems. These problems require that plant oils need to be upgraded if they are to be used as a fuel in conventional diesel engines. Biodiesel, biooil, and renewable diesel are the three major biofuels obtained from plant oils. The main constraint associated with the production of biodiesel is the cost and sustainability of the feedstock. The renewable diesel obtained from crude tall oil is more sustainable than biofuels obtained from other feedstocks. The fuel properties of renewable diesel are similar to those of fossil fuels with reduced greenhouse gas emissions. In this review, the chemical composition of common commercial plant oils, i.e., palm oil, olive oil, rapeseed oil, castor oil, and tall oil, are presented. Both their major and minor components are discussed. Their compositions and fuel properties are compared to both fossil fuels and biofuels.  相似文献

The global economy heads for a severe energy crisis: whereas the energy demand is going to rise, easily accessible sources of crude oil are expected to be depleted in only 10–20 years. Since a serious decline of oil supply and an associated collapse of the economy might be reality very soon, alternative energies and also biofuels that replace fossil fuels must be established. In addition, these alternatives should not further impair the environment and climate. About 90% of the biofuel market is currently captured by bioethanol and biodiesel. Biodiesel is composed of fatty acid alkyl esters (FAAE) and can be synthesized by chemical, enzymatic, or in vivo catalysis mainly from renewable resources. Biodiesel is already established as it is compatible with the existing fuel infrastructure, non-toxic, and has superior combustion characteristics than fossil diesel; and in 2008, the global production was 12.2 million tons. The biotechnological production of FAAE from low cost and abundant feedstocks like biomass will enable an appreciable substitution of petroleum diesel. To overcome high costs for immobilized enzymes, the in vivo synthesis of FAAE using bacteria represents a promising approach. This article points to the potential of different FAAE as alternative biofuels, e.g., by comparing their fuel properties. In addition to conventional production processes, this review presents natural and genetically engineered biological systems capable of in vivo FAAE synthesis.  相似文献

Interest in alternative fuel sources has grown in recent years in response to a confluence of factors, including concerns over our reliance on and increasing demand for fossil fuels as well as the deleterious environmental effects of fossil fuel extraction and utilization. The use of microbe-derived fuel alcohols is a viable alternative, as they are renewable, emit fewer greenhouse gasses, and require little augmentation of current energy infrastructure as compared to other sustainable transportation options such as electric vehicles and fuel cells. Here, we present a brief overview of candidate substrates for alcohol production with a focus on lignocellulosic sources, relevant microorganisms under research for industrialization and the biotechnological techniques used to improve alcohol production phenotypes.  相似文献

Renewable resources will be an increasingly important issue for the chemical industry in the future. In the context of white biotechnology, they represent the intersection point of agriculture and the chemical industry. The scarcity and related increase in the price of fossil resources make renewable resources an interesting alternative. If one considers the production of bulk chemicals, it is evident that for this area besides the C sources, sugar and starch, new sources of raw materials must be opened up. One possible solution is to utilize lignocellulose both for materials and energy. This article discusses this interesting prospective for the future, particularly from the point of view of the German industry.  相似文献

The harmful effects of pollution from the massive and widespread use of fossil fuels have led various organizations and governments to search for alternative energy sources. To address this, a new energy bioprocess is being developed that utilizes non-edible lignocellulose – the only sustainable source of organic carbon in nature. In this mini-review, we consider the potential use of synthetic biology to develop new-to-nature pathways for the biosynthesis of chemicals that are currently synthesized using classical industrial approaches. The number of industrial processes based on starch or lignocellulose is still very modest. Advances in the area require the development of more efficient approaches to deconstruct plant materials, better exploitation of the catalytic potential of prokaryotes and lower eukaryotes and the identification of new and useful genes for product synthesis. Further research and progress is urgently needed in order for government and industry to achieve the major milestone of transitioning 30% of the total industry to renewable sources by 2050.  相似文献

The majority of environmental problems arise from the use of conventional energy sources. The liability of such problems along with the reduction of fossil energy resources has led to the global need for alternative renewable energy sources. Using renewable biofuels as energy sources is of remarkable and continuously growing importance. Producing bioethanol through conversion of waste and residual biomass can be a viable and important perspective. In the first part of this review, general concepts, approaches and considerations concerning the utilization of the most important liquid biofuels, namely biodiesel and bioethanol, are presented. Unlike biodiesel (specifically first generation biodiesel), the production of bioethanol is exclusively based on the utilization of microbial technology and fermentation engineering. In the second part of this review, the biochemistry of ethanol production, with regards to the use of hexoses, pentoses or glycerol as carbon sources, is presented and critically discussed. Differences in the glycolytic pathways between the major ethanol‐producing strains (Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Zymomonas mobilis) are presented. Regulation between respiration and fermentation in ethanol‐producing yeasts, viz. effects “Pasteur”, “Crabtree”, “Kluyver” and “Custers”, is discussed. Xylose and glycerol catabolism related with bioethanol production is also depicted and commented. The technology of the fermentation is presented along with a detailed illustration of the substrates used in the process and in pretreatment of lignocellulosic biomass, and the various fermentation configurations employed (separate hydrolysis and fermentation, simultaneous saccharification and fermentation, simultaneous saccharification and co‐fermentation and consolidated bioprocessing). Finally, the production of bioethanol under non‐aseptic conditions is presented and discussed.  相似文献

Production of renewable fuels and chemicals is an absolute requirement for the sustainability of societies. This fact has been neglected during the past century as cheap and abundant, yet not renewable, sources of hydrocarbons were available. Since fossil fuel availability is decreasing, biological production of fuels and chemicals has been proposed to be a potential alternative to fossil sources. Higher alcohols (from C3 to C5) are useful substitutes for gasoline because of their high energy density and low hygroscopicity and are important feedstocks for other chemicals. Some Clostridia species are known to naturally ferment sugars to isopropanol and 1-butanol. However, other C3 to C5 alcohols are not produced in large quantities by natural microorganisms. A non-fermentative strategy to produce a broad range of higher alcohols has been devised using the ubiquitous keto acid biosynthetic pathways. This review provides a current overview of these different strategies.  相似文献

Energy production from biomass (Part 2): Conversion technologies   总被引:27,自引:0,他引:27
The use of biomass to provide energy has been fundamental to the development of civilisation. In recent times pressures on the global environment have led to calls for an increased use of renewable energy sources, in lieu of fossil fuels. Biomass is one potential source of renewable energy and the conversion of plant material into a suitable form of energy, usually electricity or as a fuel for an internal combustion engine, can be achieved using a number of different routes, each with specific pros and cons. A brief review of the main conversion processes is presented, with specific regard to the production of a fuel suitable for spark ignition gas engines.  相似文献

Culture independent PCR: an alternative enzyme discovery strategy   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Degenerate primers were designed for use in a culture-independent PCR screening of DNA from composite fungal communities, inhabiting residues of corn stovers and leaves. According to similarity searches and alignments amplified clone sequences affiliated with glycosyl hydrolase family 7 and glycosyl hydrolase family 45 though significant sequence divergence was observed. Glycosyl hydrolases from families 7 and 45 play a crucial role in biomass conversion to fuel ethanol. Research in this renewable energy source has two objectives: (i) To contribute to development of a renewable alternative to world's limited crude fossil oil reserves and (ii) to reduce air pollution. Amplification with 18S rDNA-specific primers revealed species within the ascomycetous orders Sordariales and Hypocreales as well as basidiomycetous order Agaricales to be present in these communities. Our study documents the value of culture-independent PCR in microbial diversity studies and could add to development of a new enzyme screening technology.  相似文献

The high energy and petroleum based fuels demand of the world require use of alternative fuels from materials available within each country. Therefore biofuels may be an alternative to mineral diesel. A local pilot production of sunflower oil was implemented in order to test the possibility to reduce fossil fuels consumption on a local scale. Vegetable oils can be directly obtained from oilseed plants and can be used as energy sources in internal combustion engines.Environmental Impact Indicators were provided by Material Flow Accounting, Embodied Energy Analysis and Emergy Accounting. All three approaches reveal that the agricultural phase is the critical step in the whole production line from the point of view of environmental impact. The renewability calculated for the sunflower oil is 33.6%.A comparative Life Cycle Assessment analysis for the sunflower oil production line from conventional farming with organic farming showed environmental advantages.Furthermore use of vegetable oils instead of diesel oil as energy sources in internal combustion engines reduces carbon dioxide emissions of 59%.This study represents an opportunity for farms to reduce dependence on petroleum and to explore energy production systems exploiting renewable energy.  相似文献

Exacerbation of climate change and air pollution around the world have emphasized the necessity of replacing fossil fuels with clean and sustainable energy. Metabolic engineering has provided strategies to engineer diverse organisms for the production of biofuels from renewable carbon sources. Although some of the processes are commercialized, there has been continued effort to produce advanced biofuels with higher efficiencies. In this article, metabolic engineering strategies recently exploited to enhance biofuel production and facilitate utilization of non-edible low-value carbon sources are reviewed. The strategies include engineering enzymes, exploiting new pathways, and systematically optimizing metabolism and fermentation processes, among others. In addition, metabolic and bioprocess engineering strategies to achieve competitiveness of current biofuel production systems compared with fossil fuels are discussed.  相似文献

This new century addresses several environmental challenges among which distribution of drinking water, global warming and availability of novel renewable energy sources to substitute for fossil fuels are of utmost importance. The last two concerns are closely related because the major part of carbon dioxide (CO(2)), considered as the main cause of the greenhouse effect, is widely produced from fossil fuel combustion. Renewable energy sources fully balanced in CO(2) are therefore of special interest, especially the issue of biological production from organic wastes. Among the possibilities of bioenergy production from wastes, two approaches are particularly interesting: The first one is relatively old and related to the production of biomethane by anaerobic digestion while the second one, more recent and innovative, relies on biohydrogen production by microbial ecosystems.  相似文献

Almost 90% of our energy comes from fossil fuels, which are both limited and polluting, hence the need to find alternative sources. Biofuels can provide a sustainable and renewable source of energy for the future. Recent significant advances in genetic engineering and fermentation technology have made microbial bio-based production of chemicals from renewable resources more viable. Clostridium species are considered as promising micro-organisms for the production of a wide range of chemicals for industrial use. However, a number of scientific challenges still need to be overcome to facilitate an economically viable production system. These include the use of cheap non-food-based substrates, a better understanding of the metabolic processes involved, improvement of strains through genetic engineering and innovation in process technology. This paper reviews recent developments in these areas, advancing the use of Clostridium within an industrial context especially for the production of biofuels.  相似文献

Much of the energy being used to power our lives comes from fossil fuels such as coal, natural gas and petroleum. These energy sources are non-renewable, are being exhausted and also pollute the air, water and soil with toxic chemicals. Their mining, transportation, refining and use are associated with a large carbon footprint that contributes significantly to global warming. In addition, the geopolitical complexities surrounding the main fossil fuel producers create risks and uncertainties around the world. Replacing fossil fuels with clean, renewable forms of energy is paramount to creating a sustainable and healthy future, and for laying the foundations for global political stability and prosperity. Using biomass from plants, microbes can produce biofuels that are identical to or perform as well as fossil fuels. In addition of creating sustainable energy, advancing the biofuel industry will create new, high-quality rural jobs whilst improving energy security.  相似文献

Liquid and gaseous fuels from biotechnology: challenge and opportunities   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Abstract: This paper presents challenging opportunities for production of liquid and gaseous fuels by biotechnology. From the liquid fuels, ethyl alcohol production has been widely researched and implemented. The major obstacle for large scale production of ethanol for fuel is the cost, whereby the substrate represents one of the major cost components. Various scenarios will be presented for a critical assessment of cost distribution for production of ethanol from various substrates by conventional and high rate processes. The paper also focuses on recent advances in the research and application of biotechnological processes and methods for the production of liquid transportation fuels other than ethanol (other oxygenates; diesel fuel extenders and substitutes), as well as gaseous fuels (biogas, methane, reformed syngas). Potential uses of these biofuels are described, along with environmental concerns which accompany them. Emphasis is also put on microalgal lipids as diesel substitute and biogas/methane as a renewable alternative to natural gas. The capturing and use of landfill gases is also mentioned, as well as microbial coal liquefaction. Described is also the construction and performance of microbial fuel cells for the direct high-efficiency conversion of chemical fuel energy to electricity. Bacterial carbon dioxide recovery is briefly dealt with as an environmental issue associated with the use of fossil energy.  相似文献
