We measured net ecosystem CO2 exchange (NEE), plant biomass and growth, species composition, peat microclimate, and litter decomposition in a fertilization experiment at Mer Bleue Bog, Ottawa, Ontario. The bog is located in the zone with the highest atmospheric nitrogen deposition for Canada, estimated at 0.8–1.2 g N m−2 yr−1 (wet deposition as NH4 and NO3). To establish the effect of nutrient addition on this ecosystem, we fertilized the bog with six treatments involving the application of 1.6–6 g N m−2 yr−1 (as NH4NO3), with and without P and K, in triplicate 3 m × 3 m plots. The initial 5–6 years have shown a loss of first Sphagnum, then Polytrichum mosses, and an increase in vascular plant biomass and leaf area index. Analyses of NEE, measured in situ with climate‐controlled chambers, indicate that contrary to expectations, the treatments with the highest levels of nutrient addition showed lower rates of maximum NEE and gross photosynthesis, but little change in ecosystem respiration after 5 years. Although shrub biomass and leaf area increased in the high nutrient plots, loss of moss photosynthesis owing to nutrient toxicity, increased vascular plant shading and greater litter accumulation contributed to the lower levels of CO2 uptake. Our study highlights the importance of long‐term experiments as we did not observe lower NEE until the fifth year of the experiment. However, this may be a transient response as the treatment plots continue to change. Higher levels of nutrients may cause changes in plant composition and productivity and decrease the ability of peatlands to sequester CO2 from the atmosphere.  相似文献

Nuisance biomass levels of periphytic algae in streams   总被引:3,自引:3,他引:0
Relative coverage of filamentous periphytic algae increased with chlorophyll a (chl a) biomass on natural substrata in 22 northwestern United States and Swedish streams. A biomass range of 100–150 mg chl a m−2 may represent a critical level for an aesthetic nuisance; below those levels, filamentous coverage was less than 20%. Other indices of water quality (dissolved oxygen content and measures of benthic macroinvertebrate diversity) were apparently unaffected by periphytic biomass or filamentous coverage in these streams. Neither was biomass related to limiting nutrient content (soluble reactive phosphorus, SRP), as has been observed in previous experiments using bare rocks in streams and slides in artificial channels. Ambient SRP concentration may not be a useful predicter of periphyton accrual on natural substrates, due to uptake and recycling of P throughout the stream and undetermined losses such as sloughing and grazing.  相似文献

Periphyton removal related to phosphorus and grazer biomass level   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
1. The proliferation of nuisance periphyton in enriched streams may be dependent on the biomass of the grazing macroinvertebrates present. In the present study, the effectiveness of grazer size and biomass in controlling periphyton and the extent to which grazing effectiveness was affected by enrichment level were determined. 2. Two sets of experiments with two caddisfly grazers were conducted in laboratory channels during spring and summer 1995 and 1996. The first set tested the combined effect of phosphorus enrichment and grazing, while the second set tested the effect of variable grazer biomass on periphyton biomass. 3. Grazing reduced periphyton biomass in excess of 80%, compared to ungrazed controls. Grazers were equally effective in controlling filamentous green algae, Stigeoclonium, diatoms and small colonial greens. Near complete removal of periphyton biomass by grazing occurred at even at the lowest grazer biomass level (750 mg m??2, i.e. approximately one-third of natural levels). 4. Grazing controlled periphyton biomass more than did enrichment with soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP). 5. Grazing rates in the phosphorus-grazing interaction experiments averaged about 6 mg chl a g invertebrate??1 day??1, which was similar to past work in these channels and elsewhere, while rates were about five-fold higher in the variable grazer biomass experiments. 6. Simulating effects of SRP and grazing with a calibrated model suggests that higher SRP levels would be necessary to exceed a nuisance periphyton biomass level if grazers were present. However, if grazer biomass was more than 1500 mg m??2, a nuisance level would probably not be exceeded at any SRP.  相似文献

Cycads were a dominant plant functional type during the Mesozoic Era when atmospheric carbon dioxide [CO2] greatly exceeded current conditions. Cycads, now rare and endangered, are slow‐growing perennial gymnosperms that develop carbon‐rich structural biomass, such as sclerophyllous leaves, dense stems and massive reproductive cones. Is cycad carbon partitioning to specific organs a constraint of their high [CO2] evolutionary history (CO2 legacy hypothesis, CLH)? To explore changes in cycad growth, carbon partitioning and assimilation responses that could be expected during the CO2 depletion of the Cenozoic Era, individuals of the cycad species Encephalartos villosus plants were grown at four CO2 levels: 400, 550, 750 and 1000 μmol mol?1. The CLH predicts that cycad biomass and growth rates would increase in elevated [CO2] due to increased net assimilation rates, and that carbon‐dense structures would provide sufficient carbohydrate sinks to prevent photosynthetic down‐regulation even under super‐ambient [CO2] of 1000 μmol mol?1. Both hypotheses were confirmed, though the latter less strongly. Plant relative growth rates increased 23% and biomass accumulation increased 65% in 1000 μmol mol?1relative to 400 μmol mol?1 treatment groups. Mean net assimilation rates increased 130% at 1000 μmol mol?1 relative to 400 μmol mol?1 CO2, though there was some down‐regulation of maximum rate of carboxylation (Vcmax). Assimilation rates, relative growth rates, biomass and mean leaf sugar content were linearly related to [CO2] over the entire experimental range. Photosynthesis appears to be regulated by stomata at low CO2 levels and by non‐stomatal (i.e. biochemical limitations) at greater concentrations. In general, our results suggest that growth and physiological performance of cycads have been severely compromised by declining [CO2] during the Cenozoic Era, possibly contributing to the current rare and endangered status of this functional type.  相似文献

The effect of high zinc concentrations on the growth and photosynthetic apparatus of Setaria viridis (L.) Beauv. was investigated under laboratory conditions and a vegetation experiment. The experiments showed that zinc concentrations of 10−6 to 10−3 M did not influence seed germination. Moreover, zinc in concentrations of 40 and 80 mg kg substrate had no significant effect on most of the plant growth parameters. However, higher metal concentrations (160 and 320 mg kg substrate) inhibited shoot biomass, leaf area, inflorescence length, and biomass. At the same time, parameters such as the content of chlorophyll (a + b), F 0, Fv, and the Fv/Fm rate were not reduced even in the presence of zinc in the highest concentrations (320 mg kg substrate). S. viridis tolerance of high zinc concentrations, as well as its capacity to accumulate zinc in roots and shoots, suggests the plant can be used for phytoremediation of zinc polluted soils.  相似文献

Summary Symbiotic N2 fixation, NO 3 assimilation and protein accumulation in the shoots were measured simultaneously in alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) grown in the field or in pots, in order to study how the balance between the two modes of nitrogen nutrition could be influenced by agronomic factors, such as harvest, mineral nitrogen supply and drought stress. During periods of rapid growth, fixation and assimilation may function simultaneously; they are antagonistic at the beginning and at the end of the growth cycle, when the nitrogen requirement of the plant is lower. When nitrogen nutrition does not limit growth, mineral nitrogen supply favours assimilation at the expense of fixation, but does not modify the amount of nitrogen accumulated, which is adjusted to the growth capacity of the plant. After cutting, nitrate assimilation compensated for the decrease in fixation and supplied the plant with the nitrogen required by the regrowth, the proliferation of which determined the fixation recovery. Drought stress decreased N2 fixation much more than NO 3 assimilation. The latter made growth recovery possible when water supply conditions became normal again. These results suggested the existence of an optimum level of nitrate assimilation, which differed depending on the age of the plants and allowed both maximum growth and fixing activity.  相似文献

The effects of elevated CO2 and drought on ecophysiological parameters in grassland species have been examined, but few studies have investigated the effect of competition on those parameters under climate change conditions. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of elevated CO2 and drought on the response of plant water relations, gas exchange, chlorophyll a fluorescence and aboveground biomass in four grassland species, as well as to assess whether the type of competition modulates that response. Elevated CO2 in well‐watered conditions increased aboveground biomass by augmenting CO2 assimilation. Drought reduced biomass by reducing CO2 assimilation rate via stomatal limitation and, when drought was more severe, also non‐stomatal limitation. When plants were grown under the combined conditions of elevated CO2 and drought, drought limitation observed under ambient CO2 was reduced, permitting higher CO2 assimilation and consequently reducing the observed decrease in aboveground biomass. The response to climate change was species‐specific and dependent on the type of competition. Thus, the response to elevated CO2 in well‐watered grasses was higher in monoculture than in mixture, while it was higher in mixture compared to monoculture for forbs. On the other hand, forbs were more affected than grasses by drought in monoculture, while in mixture the negative effect of drought was higher in grasses than in forbs, due to a lower capacity to acquire water and mineral nutrients. These differences in species‐level growth responses to CO2 and drought may lead to changes in the composition and biodiversity of the grassland plant community in future climate conditions.  相似文献

The rate of leaf CO2 assimilation (A l) and leaf area determine the rate of canopy CO2 assimilation (A c) can be thought proportional to assimilate supply for growth and structural requirements of plants. Partitioning of biomass within plants and anatomy of cells within stems can determine how assimilate supply affects both stem growth and wood density. We examined the response of stem growth and wood density to reduced assimilate supply by pruning leaf area. Removing 42% of the leaf area of Eucalyptus grandis Hill ex Maiden seedlings did not stimulate leaf-level photosynthesis (A l) or stomatal conductance, contrary to some previous studies. Canopy-level photosynthesis (A c) was reduced by 41% immediately after pruning but due almost solely to continued production of leaves, and was only 21% lower 3 weeks later. Pruning consequently reduced seedling biomass by 24% and stem biomass by 18%. These reductions in biomass were correlated with reduced A c. Pruning had no effect on stem height or diameter and reduced wood density to 338 kg m−3 compared to 366 kg m−3 in control seedlings. The lower wood density in pruned seedlings was associated with a 10% reduction in the thickness of fibre cell walls, and as fibre cell diameter was invariant to pruning, this resulted in smaller lumen diameters. These anatomical changes increased the ratio of cross-sectional area of lumen to area cell wall material within the wood. The results suggest changes to wood density following pruning of young eucalypt trees may be independent of tree volume and of longer duration.  相似文献

Measurements of CO2 and O2 gas exchange and chlorophyll a fluorescence were used to test the hypothesis that elevated atmospheric CO2 inhibits nitrate (NO3) photo‐assimilation in the C4 plant, maize (Zea mays L.). The assimilatory quotient (AQ), the ratio of net CO2 assimilation to net O2 evolution, decreases as NO3 photo‐assimilation increases so that the difference in AQ between the ammonium‐ and nitrate‐fed plants (ΔAQ) provided an in planta estimate of NO3 photo‐assimilation. In fully expanded maize leaves, NO3 photo‐assimilation was detectable only under high light and was not affected by CO2 treatments. Furthermore, CO2 assimilation and O2 evolution were higher under NO3 than ammonia (NH4+) regardless of CO2 levels. In conclusion, NO3 photo‐assimilation in maize primarily occurred at high light when reducing equivalents were presumably not limiting. Nitrate photo‐assimilation enhanced C4 photosynthesis, and in contrast to C3 plants, elevated CO2 did not inhibit foliar NO3 photo‐assimilation.  相似文献

Increased atmospheric carbon dioxide supply is predicted to alter plant growth and biomass allocation patterns. It is not clear whether changes in biomass allocation reflect optimal partitioning or whether they are a direct effect of increased growth rates. Plasticity in growth and biomass allocation patterns was investigated at two concentrations of CO2 ([CO2]) and at limiting and nonlimiting nutrient levels for four fast‐ growing old‐field annual species. Abutilon theophrasti, Amaranthus retroflexus, Chenopodium album, and Polygonum pensylvanicum were grown from seed in controlled growth chamber conditions at current (350 μmol mol?1, ambient) and future‐ predicted (700 μmol mol?1, elevated) CO2 levels. Frequent harvests were used to determine growth and biomass allocation responses of these plants throughout vegetative development. Under nonlimiting nutrient conditions, whole plant growth was increased greatly under elevated [CO2] for three C3 species and moderately increased for a C4 species (Amaranthus). No significant increases in whole plant growth were observed under limiting nutrient conditions. Plants grown in elevated [CO2] had lower or unchanged root:shoot ratios, contrary to what would be expected by optimal partitioning theory. These differences disappeared when allometric plots of the same data were analysed, indicating that CO2‐induced differences in root:shoot allocation were a consequence of accelerated growth and development rates. Allocation to leaf area was unaffected by atmospheric [CO2] for these species. The general lack of biomass allocation responses to [CO2] availability is in stark contrast with known responses of these species to light and nutrient gradients. We conclude that biomass allocation responses to elevated atmospheric [CO2] are not consistent with optimal partitioning predictions.  相似文献

Atmospheric CO2 (Ca) concentration has increased significantly during the last 20 000 years, and is projected to double this century. Despite the importance of belowground processes in the global carbon cycle, community‐level and single species root responses to rising Ca are not well understood. We measured net community root biomass over 3 years using ingrowth cores in a natural C3–C4 grassland exposed to a gradient of Ca from preglacial to future levels (230–550 μmol mol?1). Root windows and minirhizotron tubes were installed below naturally occurring stands of the C4 perennial grass Bothriochloa ischaemum and its roots were measured for respiration, carbohydrate concentration, specific root length (SRL), production, and lifespan over 2 years. Community root biomass increased significantly (P<0.05) with Ca over initial conditions, with linear or curvilinear responses depending on sample date. In contrast, B. ischaemum produced significantly more roots at subambient than elevated Ca in minirhizotrons. The lifespan of roots with five or more neighboring roots in minirhizotron windows decreased significantly at high Ca, suggesting that after dense root growth depletes soil resource patches, plants with carbon surpluses readily shed these roots. Root respiration in B. ischaemum showed a curvilinear response to Ca under moist conditions in June 2000, with the lowest rates at Ca<300 μmol mol?1 and peak activity at 450 μmol mol?1 in a quadratic model. B. ischaemum roots at subambient Ca had higher SRLs and slightly higher carbohydrate concentrations than those at higher Ca, which may be related to drier soils at low Ca. Our data emphasize that belowground responses of plant communities to Ca can be quite different from those of the individual species, and suggest that complex interactions between and among roots and their immediate soil environment influence the responses of root physiology and lifespan to changing Ca.  相似文献

The magnitude of changes in carboxylation capacity in dominant plant species under long‐term elevated CO2 exposure (elevated pCa) directly impacts ecosystem CO2 assimilation from the atmosphere. We analyzed field CO2 response curves of 16 C3 species of different plant growth forms in favorable growth conditions in four free‐air CO2 enrichment (FACE) experiments in a pine and deciduous forest, a grassland and a desert. Among species and across herb, tree and shrub growth forms there were significant enhancements in CO2 assimilation (A) by +40±5% in elevated pCa (49.5–57.1 Pa), although there were also significant reductions in photosynthetic capacity in elevated pCa in some species. Photosynthesis at a common pCa (Aa) was significantly reduced in five species growing under elevated pCa, while leaf carboxylation capacity (Vcmax) was significantly reduced by elevated pCa in seven species (change of ?19±3% among these species) across different growth forms and FACE sites. Adjustments in Vcmax with elevated pCa were associated with changes in leaf N among species, and occurred in species with the highest leaf N. Elevated pCa treatment did not affect the mass‐based relationships between A or Vcmax and N, which differed among herbs, trees and shrubs. Thus, effects of elevated pCa on leaf C assimilation and carboxylation capacity occurred largely through changes in leaf N, rather than through elevated pCa effects on the relationships themselves. Maintenance of leaf carboxylation capacity among species in elevated pCa at these sites depends on maintenance of canopy N stocks, with leaf N depletion associated with photosynthetic capacity adjustments. Since CO2 responses can only be measured experimentally on a small number of species, understanding elevated CO2 effects on canopy Nm and Na will greatly contribute to an ability to model responses of leaf photosynthesis to atmospheric CO2 in different species and plant growth forms.  相似文献

Through its impact on photosynthesis and morphogenesis, light is the environmental factor that most affects plant architecture. Using light rather than chemicals to manage plant architecture could reduce the impact on the environment. However, the understanding of how light modulates plant architecture is still poor and further research is needed. To address this question, we examined the development of two rose cultivars, Rosa hybrida‘Radrazz’ and Rosa chinensis‘Old Blush’, cultivated under two light qualities. Plants were grown from one‐node cuttings for 6 weeks under white or blue light at equal photosynthetic efficiencies. While plant development was totally inhibited in darkness, blue light could sustain full development from bud burst until flowering. Blue light reduced the net CO2 assimilation rate of fully expanded leaves in both cultivars, despite increasing stomatal conductance and intercellular CO2 concentrations. In ‘Radrazz’, the reduction in CO2 assimilation under blue light was related to a decrease in photosynthetic pigment content, while in both cultivars, the chl a/b ratio increased. Surprisingly, blue light could induce the same organogenetic activity of the shoot apical meristem, growth of the metamers and flower development as white light. The normal development of rose plants under blue light reveals the strong adaptive properties of rose plants to their light environment. It also indicates that photomorphogenetic processes can all be triggered by blue wavelengths and that despite a lower assimilation rate, blue light can provide sufficient energy via photosynthesis to sustain normal growth and development in roses.  相似文献

Disturbances such as fire, hurricanes, and herbivory often result in the net release of CO2 from forests to the atmosphere, but the magnitude of carbon (C) loss is poorly quantified and difficult to predict. Here, we investigate the carbon balance of an oak/pine forest in the New Jersey Pine Barrens using the Canopy Conductance Constrained Carbon Assimilation (4C‐A) model. The 4C‐A model utilizes whole‐tree sap‐flux and leaf‐level photosynthetic gas exchange measurements at distinct canopy levels to estimate canopy assimilation. After model parameterization, sensitivity analyses, and evaluation against eddy flux measurements made in 2006, the model was used to predict C assimilation for an undisturbed year in 2005, and in 2007 when the stand was completely defoliated for 2–3 weeks during an infestation of gypsy moths (Lymantria dispar L.). Following defoliation, only 50% of the foliage reemerged in a second flush. In 2007, canopy net assimilation (AnC), as modeled with the 4C‐A, was reduced to approximately 75% of AnC in 2006 (940 vs. 1240 g C m?2 a?1). Overall, net primary production (NPP) in 2007 was approximately 240 g C m?2 a?1 (vs. 250 g C m?2 a?1 in 2006), with 60% of NPP allocated to foliage production, a short‐term carbon pool. Woody biomass accumulation, a long‐term carbon pool, was reduced by 20% compared with the previous year (72 vs. 57 g C m?2 a?1 in 2006 and 2007, respectively). The overall impact of the defoliation spanned 21% of upland forests (320 km2) in the New Jersey Pine Barrens, representing a significant amount of overall C not being taken up from the atmosphere by the forest, thus not accumulated in the biosphere.  相似文献

The growth, biofiltering efficiency and uptake rates of Ulva clathrata were studied in a series of outdoor tanks, receiving waste water directly from a shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) aquaculture pond, under constant aeration and two different water regimes: (1) continuous flow, with 1 volume exchange a day (VE day-1) and (2) static regime, with 1 VE after 4 days. Water temperature, salinity, pH, dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN), phosphate (PO4), chlorophyll-a (chl-a), total suspended solids (TSS), macroalgal biomass (fresh weight) and tissue nutrient assimilation were monitored over 12 days. Ulva clathrata was highly efficient in removing the main inorganic nutrients from effluent water, stripping 70–82% of the total ammonium nitrogen (TAN) and 50% PO4 within 15 h. Reductions in control tanks were much lower (Tukey HSD, P < 0.05). After 3 days, the mean uptake rates by the seaweed biomass under continuous flow were 3.09 mg DIN g DW day−1 (383 mg DIN m−2 day−1) and 0.13 mg PO4 g DW day−1 (99 mg PO4 m−2 day−1), being significantly higher than in the static regime (Tukey HSD, P < 0.05). The chl-a decreased in seaweed tanks, suggesting that U. clathrata inhibited phytoplankton growth. Correlations between the cumulative values of DIN removed from the water and total nitrogen assimilated into the seaweed biomass (r = 0.7 and 0.8, P < 0.05), suggest that nutrient removal by U. clathrata dominated over other processes such as phytoplankton and bacterial assimilation, ammonia volatilization and nutrient precipitation.  相似文献

1. Algal growth in lotic systems is controlled either from the bottom‐up (e.g. nutrients and light, which determine growth rates) or from the top‐down (e.g. grazing pressure, which reduces accumulated biomass). Nutrient‐enriched streams that support large and diverse grazing macroinvertebrate populations and those with shaded riparian corridors rarely suffer from excessive algal growth. 2. In this study, the density of benthic algivorous macroinvertebrates was experimentally manipulated in shaded and open nutrient‐enriched stream habitats of the Owennagearagh River, south‐west Ireland. The ability of macroinvertebrate grazers and riparian shade to control benthic algal growth [particularly the nuisance alga, Cladophora glomerata (L. Kütz)] was investigated. Three sites with markedly different concentrations of plant nutrients (one site upstream and two sites downstream of the sewage outfall) were selected. The density of grazing invertebrates colonising ceramic tiles was reduced using high‐voltage localised electric pulses. Replicates of treatment (grazer‐excluded) and control (grazed) tiles were deployed in open and shaded (<25 and >80% canopy cover, respectively) patches of stream bed, in each site. 3. After 2‐week Cladophora cover, periphytic chlorophyll a and biofilm ash‐free dry mass (AFDM) were quantified for all experimental tiles. Values for all three parameters were highest on grazer‐excluded tiles from open patches. Grazed tiles from open patches accrued little Cladophora and had significantly lower levels of chlorophyll a and AFDM. Nutrient inputs were found to have an impact on the density of grazing invertebrates, with higher densities of Baetis nymphs at the most nutrient‐enriched site. 4. Our results demonstrate that in eutrophic, high‐light streams, filamentous algae can quickly accumulate to nuisance levels in the absence of invertebrate grazers. In future, greater attention should be paid to the role of grazing invertebrates in controlling nuisance algae in streams, in addition to algal–nutrient relationships.  相似文献

The crown architectures of 11 Psychotria species native to Barro Colorado Island, Panama were reconstructed from field measurements of leaf and branch geometry with the three-dimensional simulation model Y-plant. The objective was to assess the role of species differences in architecture in light capture and carbon gain in their natural understory environment. When species were grouped according to their putative light environment preference, the shade tolerant species were found to have a small but significantly higher efficiency of light capture for both diffuse and direct light as compared to the light demanding species. Within each grouping, however, there were few significant differences in light capture efficiency among species. The lower efficiencies of light demanding species was due to slightly higher self-shading and slightly lower angular efficiencies. Simulations of whole plant assimilation showed that light demanding species had greater daily assimilation in both direct and diffuse light due to the significantly greater light availability in the sites where light demanding species were found, as compared to those where shade tolerant species occurred. Among light demanding species, the above ground relative growth rate measured over a 1-year period by applying allometric equations for mass versus linear dimensions, was positively correlated with diffuse PFD and with mean daily assimilation estimated from Y-plant. For the shade tolerant plants, there was no significant correlation between RGR and mean daily assimilation or with any measure of light availability, probably because they occurred over a much narrower range of light environments. Overall, the results reveal a strong convergence in light capture efficiencies among the Psychotria species at lower values than previously observed in understory plants using similar approaches. Constraints imposed by other crown functions such as hydraulics and biomechanical support may place upper limits on light capture efficiency.Abbreviations Ea Efficiency of light absorption (dimensionless) - Eadir Efficiency of direct light absorption (dimensionless) - Eadif Efficiency of diffuse light absorption (dimensionless) - DE Display efficiency (dimensionless) - PE Projection efficiency (dimensionless) - CosI Mean cosine of incidence (dimensionless) - aLARe Effective leaf area ratio (m2 g–1) - Atot Daily assimilation (mmol m–2 day–1) - Adir Daily assimilation in direct PFD (mmol m–2 day–1) - Adif Daily assimilation in diffuse PFD (mmol m–2 day–1)  相似文献

Twenty eight-day old plants of two spring wheat cultivars differing in salinity tolerance were subjected to varying levels of nitrogen (56, 112, and 224 mg N·kg−1 soil) for 42 days. Both cultivars performed differently under varying soil N levels in terms of growth, and grain yield and yield components. Nitrogen levels, 112 and 224 mg·kg−1 soil, caused maximal growth in Sarsabz and Barani-83, respectively. Cv Sarsabz maintained higher leaf water and turgor potentials, but lower leaf osmotic potential than those of Barani-83 at all external N regimes. Sarsabz had higher Chl a, Chl b and carotenoids contents in leaves than those in Barani-83 at 56 and 112 mg N·kg−1 soil. Sarsabz had higher contents of leaf soluble proteins, soluble sugars, and free amino acids than those in Barani-83 at all external N levels. In Barani-83 net CO2 assimilation rate remained almost unchanged, whereas in Sarsabz it decreased consistently with increase in external N level. The better growth performance of Sarsabaz as compared to Barani-83 under varying soil N levels except 224 mg N·kg−1 soil was associated with maintenance of high leaf turgor potential but not with net CO2 assimilation rate.  相似文献

Picea asperata is a dominant species in the subalpine coniferous forests distributed in eastern edges of Tibetan Plateau and upper reaches of the Yangtze River. The paper mainly identified the short-term influences of experimental warming, nitrogen fertilization, and their combination on growth and physiological performances of Picea asperata seedlings. These seedlings were subjected to two levels of temperature (ambient; infrared heater warming) and two nitrogen levels (0; 25 g m−2 a−1 N) for 6 months. We used a free air temperature increase of overhead infrared heater to raise both air and soil temperature by 2.1 and 2.6°C, respectively. The temperature increment induced an obvious enhancement in biomass accumulation and the maximum net photosynthetic rate, and decreased AOS and MDA level under ambient nitrogen conditions. Whereas, negative effects of experimental warming on growth and physiology was observed under nitrogen fertilization condition. On the other hand, nitrogen fertilization significantly improved plant growth in unwarmed plots, by stimulating total biomass, maximum net photosynthetic rate (A max), antioxidant compounds, as well as reducing the content of AOS and MDA. However, in warmed plots, nitrogen addition clearly decreased A max, antioxidant compounds, and induced higher accumulation of AOS and MDA. Obviously, the beneficial effects of sole nitrogen on growth and physiology of Picea asperata seedlings could not be magnified by artificial warming.  相似文献

1. While phosphorus (P) is often considered the most important growth limiting factor for plants in lakes, recent studies of shallow lakes indicate that nitrogen (N) may be of greater importance than realized hitherto and that submerged macrophytes may be lost when the N concentration exceeds a certain threshold, as long as the concentration of P is sufficiently high. 2. We studied the effects of different loadings of NH4‐N and NO3‐N on chlorophyll a and on a macrophyte tolerant of eutrophication, Vallisneria spinulosa (Hydrocharitaceae). In outdoor mesocosms we used water from a pond as control and created four levels of NH4‐N and NO3‐N (approximately 2.5, 5, 7.5 and 10 mg L−1) by dosing with NH4Cl and NaNO3, respectively. After the experiment, the plants were transferred back to a holding pond to study their recovery. In contrast to previous research, we used a low background concentration of phosphorus (TP 0.024 ± 0.003 mg L−1) so we could judge whether any effects of N were apparent when P is in short supply. 3. Chlorophyll a increased significantly with N dosing for both forms of N, but the increase was highest in the NH4‐N dosed mesocosms (maximum 58 μg L−1 versus 42 μg L−1 in the NO3‐N mesocosms), probably due to a higher total inorganic N concentration (part of the added ammonia was converted to nitrate during the experiment). 4. Although the number of ramets of V. spinulosa was not affected by the N treatment, the biomass increased up to concentrations of 7.5 mg L−1, while biomass at 10 mg L−1 remained at the control level for both N ions treatments. A similar pattern was apparent for the content of N and soluble sugar of the plant, while there were no differences in the plant P content among treatments. Five months after transplantation back to the pond no difference was found in the number of ramets or in biomass, except that the biomass of plants grown at 10 mg N L−1 during the experiment was greater than that in the control, while the N and P contents of plants were similar to those of the controls. 5. Nitrogen concentration had little influence on the growth of the eutrophication tolerant submerged macrophyte at moderately low concentrations of phosphorus. Moreover, the two N ions showed no toxic effects, suggesting that loss of macrophytes observed in other studies, run at higher phosphorus concentrations, was probably related to enhanced shading by periphyton and/or phytoplankton rather than to any toxic effects of N.  相似文献
