Rats were rendered obese by feeding them a fatty diet (HFD, fat: 50% of weight). At the end of the experimental period the animals were divided, also the control rats, which were fed a low-fat diet (LFD, fat: 3% of weight), in light and heavy weight groups. The heavy and obese HFD groups showed, unlike the light LFD-animals, equal absolute but significantly lower relative thyroidal weights. The absolute thyroidal weights of light and heavy animal groups, which received in each case the same diet, were identical, the relative thyroidal weights of the heavy rats on the other hand decreased significantly. The iodoamino acid distribution in the thyroid of rats showed no variation in animals fed various diets and differed in body mass and fat content. The T4 serum levels of the HFD-, in comparison to the LFD-animals increased significantly. Between light and heavy animals in equal diet groups no differences were obtained for the T4 serum values. The serum T3 levels of LFD- and HFD-rats were also equal. The heavy HFD- showed in comparison to the light LFD-animals a significantly lower T4 clearance and in the higher age groups a significantly extended T4 half-life time. The HFD- and LFD-rats with approximately equal body mass and body fat content showed no differences in T4 half-life time and T4 clearance rate depending on diet. A relation between higher body fat content and increased serum T4 levels as a possible adaption to obesity in heavy HFD-rats is discussed. By the comparison of younger and older rats in the most investigated diet and weight groups the older animals showed a decreasing tendency for K and TD/100 g KM and a significant decrease in the clearance rate and in the TD for T4, related to body mass. An influence of diet, body mass or fat content on the decrease of the T4 metabolism of rats with increased age is not evident. The T4 serum levels were not different in dependence on age, but the free T4 serum level was significantly lower in the older rats.  相似文献

A mixed problem for the M'Kendrick-von Foerster equation satisfied by the number density function in terms of the age of the viable cells in a suspension culture with feed and/or drain is solved, and a method of calculating the number density function and time-dependent generation time from observed data of cell number and cell mass is presented. This theory is adequate to analyze the growth of cells that undergo binary fission. The equation of mass balance follows as a natural consequence of this treatment. The aim of this study was to test the hypotheses that differences in residual feed intake (RFI) of beef steers are related to diet sorting, diet nutrient composition, energy intake and apparent digestibility. To phenotype steers for RFI, 69 weaned Angus × Hereford steers were fed individually for 56 days. A finishing diet was fed twice daily on an ad libitum basis to maintain approximately 0.5 to 1.0 kg refusals. Diet offered and refused was measured daily, and DM intakes (DMI) were calculated by difference. Body weights were recorded at 14-day intervals following an 18-h solid feed withdrawal. The residual feed intake was determined as the residual of the regression of DMI versus mid-test metabolic BW (BW 0.75) and average daily gain (ADG). Particle size distributions of diet and refusals were determined using the Penn State Particle Separator to quantify diet sorting. Sampling of diet, refusals and feces were repeated in four sampling periods which occurred during weeks 2, 4, 6 and 8 of the study. Particle size distributions of refusals and diet were analyzed in weeks 2, 4 and 6, and sampling for chemical analysis of refusals and feces occurred in all four periods. Indigestible neutral detergent fiber (288 h in situ) was used as an internal marker of apparent digestibility. We conclude that preference for the intakes of particles > 19 mm and 4 to 8 mm were negatively correlated to RFI and ADG, respectively. Although steers did sort to consume a different diet composition than offered, diet sorting did not impact intake energy, digestible energy or DM digestibility.  相似文献

Concentrations of leptin in serum and milk were assessed in gilts fed diets during gestation that differed in energy level. Beginning at day 45 and continuing throughout pregnancy, gilts received either a high-energy (6882 kcal metabolizable energy (ME) per day) or low-energy (5221 kcal ME per day) diet (n = 9 per group). All gilts had ad libitum access to a standard lactation diet throughout a 21 day lactation. During gestation, gilts consuming the high-energy diet gained more body weight (P < 0.01) and backfat thickness (P = 0.03) than gilts fed the low-energy diet; however, serum concentrations of leptin remained similar between groups (P = 0.35). Within 24 h after farrowing, gilts fed the high-energy diet had greater levels of leptin in serum and milk than gilts that consumed the low-energy diet during gestation (P < 0.07); Across treatments, backfat thickness and leptin levels in serum were positively correlated (r(2) = 0.51; P = 0.03). At weaning, backfat thickness (P < 0.07), but not body weights or serum and milk levels of leptin (P > 0.1), were greater for gilts fed the high-energy, versus the low-energy, diet during gestation. Gilts that were fed the low-energy diet during gestation consumed more feed during week 2 of lactation (P = 0.06). Our results suggest that altering the level of energy in the diets of gestating swine can influence circulating and milk concentrations of leptin, as well as feed consumption, during lactation.  相似文献

The metabolism of iron and copper in male Nagase analbuminaemic (NA) and Sprague Dawley (SD) rats was compared. Relative liver weight was higher and spleen weight significantly lower in NA than SD rats. In NA rats, red blood cell count, haemoglobin and haematocrit were lower, whereas plasma transferrin, total iron-binding capacity and mean corpuscular haemoglobin were higher when compared with SD rats. Iron concentrations in plasma, liver, kidneys and heart were higher, and those in the spleen and tibia were lower, in NA rats. The iron concentrations in liver and spleen were positively correlated with the amount of brown pigment as observed histopathologically. Bile flow as well as biliary iron and copper excretion were higher in NA than SD rats. Copper concentrations in liver, kidneys and plasma were higher in NA rats. Plasma levels of ceruloplasmin were about two-fold higher in NA rats. The feeding of a high-iron diet reduced kidney copper concentrations in both strains of rats, which was associated with a decrease in the absorption and biliary excretion of copper.  相似文献

Lack of an indispensable amino acid in the diet induces a rapid reduction in food intake. In this study, we assessed whether the anorectic signal after ingestion of a meal lacking threonine originated from either direct perception of the decrease in plasma threonine or from an indirect effect related to increased postprandial amino acid catabolism and energy expenditure. We observed that 3 g of such a meal was sufficient to induce an aversive response to the diet within 2 h. Postprandial changes to plasma ammonia and urea, urinary urea, and energy metabolism did not differ from those measured after a control meal. In contrast, plasma threonine levels fell within 1 h after the meal. It is concluded that an increase in postprandial energy expenditure is not involved in the anorectic response to eating a threonine-devoid diet. The drop in plasma threonine levels may be a potential signal, but the fact that the decrease in food intake occurred 1 h after the decrease in plasma threonine questions a direct causal relationship.  相似文献

Carabids and coccinellids are the most abundant aphid predators in alfalfa. Depending on the amount of prey consumed, the impact of their combined effect can be additive, antagonistic, or synergistic. Laboratory trials demonstrated that a higher proportion of Aphis craccivora Koch dropped from the alfalfa plants in the presence of coccinellids, and that the interaction between these predators was additive or synergistic, but never antagonistic, suggesting that they might be good partners in controlling aphids.  相似文献

The administration of drinking-water, added with LiCl (20mg Li+/l) to rats fed on "atherogenic" diet without cholesterol (casein 20% hydrogenated coconut oil 25%, sucrose 49.1%) for 90 days, elicits an expressive diminution of haematic lipids (triglycerides, free fatty acids, total cholesterol) and hepatic cholesterol. The serum dosages of thyroid hormones T3 and T4 show that the Li+ concentration used in the experiment do not inhibit the glandular functions.  相似文献

This study was designed to determine the effects of age and the role of spleen in rats with heavy Angiostrongylus cantonensis infection. Young rats (8 weeks) infected with 100 larvae were found to have significantly higher worm recovery rate (75.0±6.6%) than the adult (6 months) (55.7±1.5%) and the aging ones (13 months) (57.6±4.0%). Moreover, the recovery rate in adult rats with 400 larvae (33.6±10.67%) was significantly lower than those with 100 larvae (55.7±1.53%) or 200 larvae (53.3±5.4%). The splenectomized young rats with 100 larvae had a significantly higher recovery rate (84.3±2.5%) than the intact (75.0±6.6%) or sham splenectomized ones (74.4±3.8%). Although titers of antibody against A. cantonensis increased with time, those against young adults were significantly higher before week 4 whereas those against adult worms become significantly higher since week 4. Titers in the splenectomized rats were also found to be significantly lower than those in the intact ones. These finding indicate that young rats are more susceptible to A. cantonensis. Crowding effect may occur in rats with heavy infections. The effects of splenectomy on the host are independent of the intensity of infection.  相似文献

Nutritional supplementation with some amino acids may influence host??s responses and also certain mechanism involved in tumor progression. It is known that exercise influences body weight and muscle composition. Previous findings from our group have shown that leucine has beneficial effects on protein composition in cachectic rat model as the Walker 256 tumor. The main purpose of this study was to analyze the effects of light exercise and leucine and/or glutamine-rich diet in body composition and skeletal muscle protein synthesis and degradation in young tumor-bearing rats. Walker tumor-bearing rats were subjected to light aerobic exercise (swimming 30?min/day) and fed a leucine-rich (3%) and/or glutamine-rich (4%) diet for 10?days and compared to healthy young rats. The carcasses were analyzed as total water and fat body content and lean body mass. The gastrocnemious muscles were isolated and used for determination of total protein synthesis and degradation. The chemical body composition changed with tumor growth, increasing body water and reducing body fat content and total body nitrogen. After tumor growth, the muscle protein metabolism was impaired, showing that the muscle protein synthesis was also reduced and the protein degradation process was increased in the gastrocnemius muscle of exercised rats. Although short-term exercise (10?days) alone did not produce beneficial effects that would reduce tumor damage, host protein metabolism was improved when exercise was combined with a leucine-rich diet. Only total carcass nitrogen and protein were recovered by a glutamine-rich diet. Exercise, in combination with an amino acid-rich diet, in particular, leucine, had effects beyond reducing tumoral weight such as improving protein turnover and carcass nitrogen content in the tumor-bearing host.  相似文献
