A new metamaterial absorber is designed and characterized numerically for the harvesting of solar energy. The design is composed of three layers in which the interaction among them gives rise to the plasmonic resonances. The main operation frequency range of the proposed structure is chosen to be the visible regime. However, the design is also analyzed for the infrared and ultraviolet regimes. In order to characterize the absorber, some parametric studies with respect to the dimensions of the structure are carried out. According to the results, it is found that the proposed metamaterial absorber has 98.2 % absorption capability at 445.85 THz and 99.4 % absorption capability between 624 and 658.3 THz. Moreover, the polarization dependency of the structure is examined and it is found that the design operates well as a perfect absorber with polarization independency for the studied frequency range. As a result, the proposed metamaterial absorber can be used for solar energy harvesting as it provides multiple perfect absorption bands in the visible regime.  相似文献

Archimedean nanospirals exhibit many far-field resonances that result from the lack of symmetry and strong intra-spiral plasmonic interactions. Here, we present a computational study, with corroborating experimental results, on the plasmonic response of the 4π Archimedean spiral as a function of incident polarization, for spirals in which the largest linear dimension is less than 550 nm. We discuss the modulation of the near-field structure for linearly and circularly polarized light in typical nanospiral configurations. Computational studies of the near-field distributions excited by circularly polarized light illustrate the effects of chirality on plasmonic mechanisms, while rotation of linearly polarized light provides a detailed view of the effects of broken symmetry on nanospiral fields in any given direction in the plane of the spiral. The rotational geometry exhibits a preference for circular polarization that increases near-field enhancement compared to excitation with linearly polarized light and exchanges near-field configurations and resonant modes. By analyzing the effects of polarization and wavelength on the near-field configurations, we also show how the nanospiral could be deployed in applications such as tunable near-field enhancement of nonlinear optical signals from chiral molecules.  相似文献

A high performance plasmonic sensor based on a metal-insulator-metal (MIM) waveguide coupled with a double-cavity structure consisting of a side-coupled rectangular cavity and a disk cavity is proposed. The transmission characteristics of the rectangular cavity and disk cavity are analyzed theoretically and the improvements of performance for the double-cavity structure compared with a single cavity are studied. The influence of structural parameters on the transmission spectra and sensing performance are investigated in detail. A sensitivity of 1136 nm/RIU with a high figure of merit of 51,275 can be achieved at the resonant wavelength of 1148.5 nm. Due to the high performance and easy fabrication, the proposed structure may be applied in integrated optical circuits and on-chip nanosensors.  相似文献

Nano-porous ultrathin plasmonic insulator-metal-insulator-metal (IMIM) solar cell with high power conversion efficiency up to 7% in broad wavelength range from 300 to 750 nm was theoretically studied. The proposed IMIM design allows to choose various bottom insulators with desired barrier height of metal-insulator interface due to independence of the total absorbance on the bottom insulator. IMIM structure shows 73.8% difference in the average absorbance between the top and bottom metal layers with 1-nm bottom insulator. Moreover, the incident light decreases the absorbance negligibly up to 35 degrees for both TE and TM modes and by 17.5% at 70 degrees. Furthermore, the absorption between TE and TM modes differs by less than 5%, which indicates the structure as polarization independent. Our results indicate IMIM design benefit in plasmonic solar cells demanding low thickness, flexibility, low-cost, and polarization independence. Moreover, this structure can be implemented for integrated optical circuits as well as for solar thermoelectric generator.  相似文献

The sensitivity of the wavelength position of localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) in metal nanostructures to local changes in the refractive index has been widely used for label-free detection strategies. Tuning the optical properties of the nanostructures from the visible to the infrared region is expected to have a drastic effect on the refractive index sensitivity. Here, we theoretically investigate the optical response of a newly designed plasmonic interface to changes in the bulk refractive index by the finite difference time domain method. It consists of a structured interface, where the planar interface is superposed with dielectric pillars 30 nm in height and 125 nm in length with a separation distance of 15 nm. The pillars are covered with U-shaped gold nanostructures of 50 nm in height, 125 nm in length, and 5 nm of gold base thickness. The whole structure is finally covered with a 5-nm thick dielectric layer of n 2?=?2.63. This plasmonic structure shows bulk refractive index sensitivities up to 1750 nm/RIU (RIU : refractive index unit) in the near infrared (λ?=?2621 nm). The enhanced sensitivity is a consequence of the extremely enhanced electrical field between the gold nanopillars of the plasmonic interface.  相似文献

In this letter, we investigate the extraordinary optical transmission behavior of a flat continuous metal film sandwiched by magnetic plasmonic structures. A new mechanism by utilizing higher order magnetic plasmon resonance is proposed to enhance the transmission. Numerical simulation results show that 80 % electromagnetic energy can be transmitted through the middle 50-nm-thick continuous gold film in near-infrared regime. The excitation of the second-order magnetic plasmons and the propagating surface plasmons, as well as the interaction between them accounts for such a high transmission. The interaction of magnetic plasmons and surface plasmons leads to new hybrid modes, and the coupled oscillator model is introduced to analyze this hybridization. This work extends the application range of higher order magnetic plasmons and may have potential in transparent electrode and electromagnetic energy transfer applications.  相似文献

A novel metal-insulator-metal (MIM) plasmonic waveguides structure, which is composed by stub waveguide with nanodisk and Fabry-Perot (F-P) resonator, has been proposed and numerically simulated with the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD). Based on the three-level system, the extreme destructive interference between bright and dark resonators gives rise to the distinct plasmonically induced absorption (PIA) response with the abnormal dispersion and novel fast-light feature. Simultaneously, the dramatic double plasmonically induced transparency (PIT) effect with slow-light characteristic can also be achieved in the system. The relationship between the transmission characteristics and the geometric parameters is studied in detail. By optimum design, the modulation depth of the PIA transmission spectrum of 90 % with 0.145 and 0.14 ps fast-light effect can be gained simultaneously, and the peak transmissivity of the double PIT system of 75.2 and 72.8 % with ?0.38 ps slow light-effect can be achieved. The simulated transmission features are in agreement with the temporal-coupled mode theory (CMT). The characteristics of the system indicate an important potential application in integrated optical circuits such as slow-light and fast-light devices, high-performance filter, and optical storage.  相似文献

Based on silicon plasmonic waveguide with asymmetrical metal and dielectric coatings, we show that in-plane light beam with orbital angular momentum (OAM) in its axis field component could be generated by forming a π/2 phase difference between two fundamental modes of the asymmetrical waveguide. At the same time, the transverse field components contain a spin angular momentum due to the polarization rotation in the asymmetrical waveguide. The whole structure is ultracompact with a footprint less than < 3 × 0.5 × 0.5 μm. The proposed method to generate OAM beam in a waveguide would be interesting for on-chip integrated optical tweezers, information processing, etc.  相似文献

Fano resonances are numerically predicted in an ultracompact plasmonic structure, comprising a metal-isolator-metal (MIM) waveguide side-coupled with two identical stub resonators. This phenomenon can be well explained by the analytic model and the relative phase analysis based on the scattering matrix theory. In sensing applications, the sensitivity of the proposed structure is about 1.1?×?103 nm/RIU and its figure of merit is as high as 2?×?105 at λ?=?980 nm, which is due to the sharp asymmetric Fano line-shape with an ultra-low transmittance at this wavelength. This plasmonic structure with such high figure of merits and footprints of only about 0.2 μm2 may find important applications in the on-chip nano-sensors.  相似文献

Unlike the case in magnification mode, it is found that hyperlens employed in demagnification and lithography manner encounters great degradation of imaging quality especially for high-resolution image features. This problem mainly arises from the transversal magnetic polarization feature of light which delivers reduced contrast of electronic components intensity profile at the imaging region. Hyperlens with plasmonic reflector layer is designed for subwavelength demagnification imaging and photolithography. Analytical equations and numerical simulations show amplification of reflected evanescent waves in photoresist sandwiched by hyperlens and plasmonic reflectors in cylindrical geometry. The image quality features including resolution, contrast, and intensity can be improved significantly. Also presented are the dependence and influence of geometry parameters on imaging quality. Numerical demonstrations are given with about 15 nm half-pitch resolution imaging at illuminating wavelength of 365 nm.  相似文献

Metasurfaces used in the manipulation of light beams have attracted growing interests owing to their unique electromagnetic properties in the subwavelength regime. However, most previously demonstrated single-layer metasurfaces are normally designed to realize one-fold function of either polarization or phase manipulation and suffer from low cross-polarization conversion efficiency and high-background, especially for transmissive metasurfaces. Here, a metasurface based on metal-insulator-metal (MIM) subwavelength grating is proposed to simultaneously achieve polarization filtering and phase controlling. The transmission coefficient reaches up to 78.9% and the polarization extinction ratio (ER = 20*log(T TM /T TE) is larger than 16.1 dB. A local abrupt phase difference covering 0–2π is introduced into transmitted light with the polarization direction vertical to the grating by artificially tailoring the geometrical parameters of MIM grating. Furthermore, background-free wavefront control and high-purity radial/azimuthal polarization are realized by the metasurfaces based on the MIM grating. This flexible and high-efficient scheme of full control wavefront and polarization promises an unprecedented progress of spatial vectorial beams modulation and enable the realization of novel optical components.  相似文献

The difficulty in patterning the structures at sub-wavelength range leads to employ the bottom-up approach to form nanostructures of metals as well as dielectric components that disperse them in host media. The optical properties of nanoparticles are studied with UV-Vis 750 (lambda) NIR spectroscopy and fit with empirical relations. The refractive index is about the volume fraction of particles. The AuGe nanoparticles demonstrate improved absorbance, lower refractive index, and higher extinction than Au nanoparticles formed with similar thermal process. Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) phenomena are highly sensitive to the bonding between atoms, atomic structure, and the electronic configuration in atoms of the given material. If one takes into account the structure of materials, then the literature on eutectic alloys predicts that alloying gold with germanium (AuGe) with varying compositions will also change the x-ray diffraction peak positions of gold itself. The peak shift can be interpreted as the change in grain size or shift in grain boundaries implying a corresponding change in material’s atomic arrangement within lattice structure. As a result, there will be a change in the charge distribution of free electron cloud in original gold ultimately affecting a change in the plasmon resonance frequency and thereby modulating the various optical phenomena such as absorbance, reflectance, and refractive index. This alloying also brings a change in the dielectric constant of the material such that the plasmonic behavior may shift among different regions (UV, visible, NIR, MWIR, and LWIR). Metal semiconductor eutectic alloy which is widely popular as a soldering material would have scope in futuristic photonic applications due to its tuneable optical properties. In this work, we study the effects of Au and AuGe nanoparticle deposition on GaAs films grown by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). Au and AuGe thin films (12-nm thick) were annealed in the temperature ranges of 400–800 and 300–700 °C, respectively, to form Au and AuGe nanoparticles. The formation of these nanoparticles was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) measurements. Optical absorption spectroscopy measurements showed plasmon resonance peaks at around 670 and 535 nm for the AuGe-deposited 300 °C-annealed sample and Au-deposited 600 °C-annealed sample on sapphire, respectively, thereby confirming the plasmonic effect. Correlation of Raman spectroscopy measurement results with X-ray diffraction measurement results reveal that the transverse optical mode intensity and full width at half maximum of the GaAs (400) peak increased with an increase in annealing temperature, indicating degradation of the crystalline properties of GaAs film at higher annealing temperatures. The highest increments of the photoluminescence (PL) intensities in comparison to that of the bare GaAs film were observed to be 37 and 77% for the Au-deposited 600 °C-annealed and AuGe-deposited 300 °C-annealed samples, respectively. These enhancements of PL spectra are an indication of the significant scattering of photons by Au and AuGe nanoparticles, and they are attributed mainly to the contribution of the local surface plasmon resonance of these nanoparticles. A comparative analysis of PL enhancements revealed that AuGe nanoparticles induced a greater enhancement than Au nanoparticles. The calculated activation energies of the Au-deposited 600 °C-annealed sample, AuGe-deposited 300 °C-annealed sample, and bare GaAs sample were around 18, 24, and 33 meV, respectively. We found one-order increment in peak responsivity of AuGe plasmonic-based trilayer InAs quantum dot detector in comparison to as-grown detector at 80 K. Therefore, this study is expected to be very useful in the realization of high-performance plasmonic-based optoelectronic and sensing devices.  相似文献

We theoretically and numerically investigated the photothermal switching of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) based on two Si waveguides integrated with plasmonic nanoheaters. The nanoheater is a composite nanowire with Au/Al2O3/Au three-layer structure, which is designed to have a highly efficient optical absorption peak at wavelength of 1,064 nm. Based on this finding, we further analyze a MZI built with two 40-μm-long symmetric waveguide branches, each integrated with a 20-μm-long nanoheater. The optical switching power of the MZI device is 190 mW (280 mW) for the capped (buried) channel waveguide, when pumped by a circular Gaussian beam with a waist of 10 μm. Alternatively, the switching power can be reduced to 38 mW (56 mW) by using an astigmatic Gaussian beam, with a semi-major axis of 10 μm and an aspect ratio of 5. The switching response time of the MZI is 0.7 μs (1.0 μs) for capped (buried) channel waveguide design. Our design opens a new route for optically driven non-contact optical on-off switching with sub-microsecond time response.  相似文献

The high fractional open area of metal thin film coatings, with two dimensional, hexagonally ordered, close packed arrays of holes, makes them of interest for the incorporation of plasmonic effects into a variety of optical devices. Gold films with hexagonal patterns of circular holes have been created on ZnSe infrared windows. The films have 2.50 μm diameter holes and a hexagonal lattice parameter of 3.06 μm which places the primary transmission resonances of the ZnSe/gold interface at ~1,400 cm?1 (7.14 μm) and that of the air/gold interface at ~3,800 cm?1 (2.63 μm). This geometry produces useful transmission across the whole traditional mid-infrared range. The dispersion of these resonances has been measured by changing the angle of incident light. The data is modeled with explicit momentum matching equations in two different, high symmetry geometries, allowing the effective index of refraction to vary with wavelength. The response of these resonances to the addition of an acetaldehyde coating is described.  相似文献

Broadband light transparency of metallic structures has long been pursued due to the potential applications in the optoelectronic communications, flat panel displays, and clean solar energy. Considerable efforts have been made on the multiband electromagnetic wave transparency of plasmonic metamolecules. However, far less work has been focused on the multispectral light transparency of a seamless metal film. Here, we for the first time propose a seamless metal film structure coated by double conventional plasmonic crystals and demonstrate the observed multispectral broadband light transparency behavior. A maximum transmittance larger than 92 % is achieved. The average transmittance of the whole spectral range from 550 to 1,100 nm is exceeding 45.8 %, suggesting the achievement of an ultra-broadband semi-transparent window. Particularly, the transparency features are highly scalable by tuning the structural parameters. Plasmonic resonances and the metallic particle–film plasmonic interactions are responsible for the observed optical transparency properties. These findings and merits make the proposed structure a good candidate for numerous potential applications, including the optoelectronic components, transparent displayers, and light harvesting.  相似文献

Optical extinction resonant properties of the silver rhombic plasmonic nanoparticles in visible regime were investigated by means of finite difference time domain method algorithm-based computational numerical calculation. Considering aspect ratio (a/b) of the x- and y-axes of the rhombic particles, the polarization in different angles of the incident light, and the index of the surrounding medium, we studied the extinction properties of a single rhombus. The simulation results show that there is only one clear resonance peak in the visible regime, and the corresponding plasmon mode is a dipolar plasmon mode. Along the direction of the light polarization, with the increase of the aspect ratio (a/b), red shift of the resonant peak occurs and the extinction efficiency increases accordingly. With the polarization angle varying from 0° to 90°, the resonance peaks show a small blue shift and the corresponding extinction efficiency varies slightly consequently. The tailoring ability of the resonance frequency is shown to be improved due to a unique interaction of local geometry with surface charge distributions.  相似文献

In this paper, the simultaneous switching and sensing capabilities of a compact plasmonic structure based on a conventional rectangular hole in a silver film are proposed and investigated. The proposed structure has ultrahigh sensitivity up to 3000 nm/RIU and high figure of merit of 170 RIU−1. Also, the simulation results show the potential of the presented refractive index sensor to detect malaria infection, cancer cells, bacillus bacteria, and solution of glucose in water. Simultaneously, by changing the incident lightwave polarization, the structure behaves like a plasmonic switch, which has high extinction ratios of 15.81, 31.20, and 25.03 dB at three telecommunication wavelengths of 850, 1310, and 1550 nm, respectively. The ultrafast response time of 20 fs is achieved for the wideband application of the switching capability at the wavelength range of 1056 to 1765 nm. Moreover, the equivalent circuit model and transmission (ABCD) matrix methods are derived to validate the simulated results. Simple design, good agreement between the numerical and analytical results, biomedical applications, ultrahigh sensitivity, and ultrafast performance of the proposed structure help this idea to open up paths for design and implementation of other multi-application plasmonic devices in near-infrared region. To the best of our knowledge, the mentioned analytical methods have not been studied former at near-infrared wavelengths. Therefore, the achievements could pave the way for verifying the simulation results of plasmonic nanostructures in future investigations.

In this paper, a plasmonic-photonic nanostructure has been introduced for efficient unidirectional coupling of free-space radiation to surface plasmon polariton (SPP) waves under normal illumination on a subwavelength slit. The structure consists of a conventional metallic slit-groove nanostructure integrated with a plasmonic waveguide to support SPP waves along the desired direction with a remarkable lateral confinement. The unidirectional coupling is achieved by using an integrated plasmonic distributed reflector designed under Bragg condition. This reflector basically distributes part of the light coupled through the slit into the SPP modes of the waveguide. Numerical simulations show that up to 26 % of the normally incident light couples to the transversely localized field of the surface plasmon. In addition, the ratio of mode current density of the surface plasmon, launched in the desired direction, to that in the opposite direction can reach about 23 times. This structure shows a 2.5-fold improvement in coupling efficiency relative to a standard slit-groove structure. Also, the transmission distance for the new nanostructure is shown to be more than 8 times greater than that of the standard nanostructure.  相似文献

Frequency of variations of surface plasmon intensity at the input of a plasmonic amplifier is called modulation–frequency. High modulation–frequency behavior of a Schottky junction-based plasmonic amplifier has been in the focus of this paper. Both small signal and large signal conditions have been considered. In small signal condition, an analytical solution of the rate equations of the electrons and photons has been presented which its results are in accordance with the simulation results of a harmonic balance method. For an amplifier of 100 μm length, the small signal gain has been 14.62 dB from both methods. Large signal behavior has been described by IIP2 and IIP3 in a two tone test which has been implemented by the harmonic balance method. IIP2 and IIP3 of the plasmonic amplifier of this work at 1 GHz are –21.2 and –19.95 dBm, respectively, and their values increase with frequency.  相似文献

We design and fabricate a nonplanar two-stage surface plasmonic lens composed of concentric circular slits for exciting propagating surface plasmonic wave and a center-positioned cone-like nanoparticle for generating localized surface plasmonic waves. The numerical investigation based on the finite difference in time domain method is performed. It is found that, when a radially polarized beam illumination is applied, a highly confined electric field with full width half maximum of as small as 6 nm and the transmission enhancement factor of six orders higher than the incident beam is achievable. The optimization design is conducted through comparison of different conic angles and different materials of the cone-like nanoparticles.  相似文献
