The rich diversity among bacterial cytochromes has played a key role in the development of our understanding of biological electron transfer. Although studies to date have allowed the elucidation of the contributions of driving force, electrostatics interactions and surface topology to electron transfer kinetics in collision-dependent reactions, much remains to be learned. Little is known about intramolecular and intracomplex electron transfer. Several factors controlling intramolecular and intracomplex electron transfer can be defined. These include driving force, the distance between redox centers, the relative orientation of prosthetic groups, the nature of the intervening media and the molecular dynamics within the electron transfer complex. However, at the present time, we have only a limited understanding of the contribution of these factors to electron transfer kinetics in biologically relevant systems. Nevertheless, a wide range of techniques are now available which should soon provide the information necessary to describe in molecular terms the mechanism of intramolecular and intracomplex electron transfer. Principal among these new approaches are site-directed mutagenesis and NMR spectroscopy.  相似文献

This review presents the salient features of the biological functions including the (i) endotoxic activities, (ii) antigenic properties, (iii) immunological responses to and (iv) phage receptor activities of the Vibrio cholerae lipopolysaccharides (LPS). The biological functions of the capsular polysaccharide (CPS) of V. cholerae have also been discussed briefly as a relevant topic. The roles of LPS and other extracellular polysaccharides in the (i) intestinal adherence and virulence of the vibrios and (ii) the biofilm formation by the organisms have been analysed on the basis of the available data. Every effort has been made to bring out, wherever applicable, the lacunae in our knowledge. The need for the continuous serogroup surveillance and monitoring of the environmental waters and the role of LPS in the designing of newer cholera vaccines has been discussed briefly in conclusion.  相似文献

Biological effectiveness of high-energy protons: target fragmentation.   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
High-energy protons traversing tissue produce local sources of high-linear-energy-transfer (LET) ions through nuclear fragmentation. We examine the contribution of these target fragments to the biological effectiveness of high-energy protons using the cellular track model. The effects of secondary ions are treated in terms of the production collision density using energy-dependent parameters from a high-energy fragmentation model. Calculations for mammalian cell cultures show that at high dose, at which intertrack effects become important, protons deliver damage similar to that produced by gamma rays, and with fragmentation the relative biological effectiveness (RBE) of protons increases moderately from unity. At low dose, where sublethal damage is unimportant, the contribution from target fragments dominates, causing the proton effectiveness to be very different from that of gamma rays with a strongly fluence-dependent RBE. At high energies, the nuclear fragmentation cross sections become independent of energy. This leads to a plateau in the proton single-particle-action cross section, below 1 keV/micron, since the target fragments dominate.  相似文献

Biological age (BA) and mental efficiency (ME) were studied in truck drivers. The study demonstrated the features of the systemic organization of the functions that determine ME depending on the age and length of service. Premature age-related changes in psychophysiological indices were just risk indicators in truck drivers. However, long-term service was found to be an actual risk factor which accelerated the aging process. This work demonstrates the adequacy and high informative value of the approaches suggested to evaluate the aging rate by ME indices and the necessity of prophylactic measures aimed at preventing the premature aging of employees.  相似文献
