The prevalence, abundance and intensity of protistan and metazoan parasites were examined in the labrid fishes Ctenolabrus rupestris, Centrolabrus exoletus, Crenilabrus melops, Labrus bergylta and L. mixtus in west Scotland. The 22 parasite species identified do not appear to be a major threat to farmed Atlantic salmon. Few mortalities of wrasse stocked on salmon farms were due to resident parasites or to transfers from salmon.  相似文献

The variety of life-history patterns exhibited by the five species of wrasse common in Northern Europe are reviewed. The two larger wrasse species, the ballan, Labrus bergylta Ascanius, and cuckoo, Labrus mixtus (L.), are exploited through sport angling. The three smaller species, the corkwing, Symphodus (Crenilabrus) melops (L.), rock cook, Centrolabrus exoletus (L.) and goldsinny, Ctenolabrus rupestris (L.), are being exploited by a new fishery for use as parasite cleaners of farmed salmon.
The nature of salmon farming limits the wrasse fishery to a minimum size, restricted areas and the warmer months of the year. The fishery may be expected to alter population structure through selective removal of larger fish. Removal of dominant territorial males may affect social structures and removal of nest-guarding males would reduce egg survival. Quantitative models incorporating stock size and fishery requirements are now required.  相似文献

The relative catching power of three types of pot was examined in aquaria and field trials. The Sunart trap was more efficient in catching goldsinny ( Ctenolabrus rupestris (L.)) and rock cook wrasse ( Centrolabrus exoletus (L.)) than was the prawn creel or the Norwegian trap; all catches were enhanced by using fish bait. Although the catch rate is lower, the Norwegian pot may still be preferred by fishermen since damage to wrasse is minimised.  相似文献

A study of seasonal and sexual variations of growth, diet, somatic condition ( K S), gonadosomatic condition (GSI) and hepatosomatic condition (HSI) of corkwing wrasse Crenilabrus melops (L.), and rock cook Centrolabrus exoletus was made on specimens taken from areas on the west coast of Scotland from May 1992 to February 1994. Capture throughout the year was by baited creel, 3-m beam trawl, fyke net or by anaesthetics applied underwater. Corkwing ranged in size from 31–212 mm and 0.3–131.2 g for males, and 31–203 mm and 0.3–103–5 g for females. Maximum corkwing ages were 6+ years for males, 7+ years for females. Male rock cook ranged in size from 43–165 mm, weighed 0.7–56–5 g, and had a maximum age of 8+ years; females ranged in size from 43–138 mm, weighed 0.7–39.3 g, and had a maximum age of 4+ years. Male growth rates were faster for both species. Male and female corkwing had low KS values during the period of high GSI values; the trends for rock cook K S values were more variable, but levels increased after the reproductive period. Maximum GSI values were 11.37 and 18.94 for male and female corkwing respectively, 9.63 and 16.63 for male and female rock cook. There was no seasonal HSI fluctuation for male corkwing, levels were higher during the reproductive period for female corkwing and male rock cook, lower during the same period for female rock cook. The diets of corkwing and rock cook were both dependent on epibenthos. Corkwing diet was dominated by gastropod molluscs. The management of sustainable fisheries for corkwing and rock cook is discussed in relation to the growth rates of the two species.  相似文献

Calocedrus rupestris Aver., H.T. Nguyen & L.K. Phan was described in 2008 based on some morphological characters that were not sufficiently significant to discriminate it as a species distinct from C. macrolepis Kurz. We applied a new approach to resolve these conflicting views by using sequence data from DNA (ITS) to elucidate phylogenetic relationships between the two species. Analyses of a partial ITS1 sequence in 5 individuals of 2 subpopulations of C. macrolepis and 18 individuals of 8 subpopulations of C. rupestris collected in Vietnam were done. Molecular characterization of the two species showed its low divergence with the lack of autapomorphic characters. In addition, the ITS1 partial sequences of some C. rupestris individuals were identical with C. macrolepis. Due to the less distinctive morphology between C. rupestris and C. macrolepis, the divergence between them does not exceed the interspecific levels, and therefore, C. rupestris could not be regarded as an independent species in relation to C. macrolepis but only as one of its varieties, C. macrolepis var. rupestris (Aver., H.T. Nguyen & L.K. Phan) L.K. Phan, Long K. Phan & Aver.  相似文献

Eight primary embryonic developmental stages were assigned to eggs of ballan wrasse Labrus bergylta using key morphological features following standardized nomenclature: Ia, Ib, II, III, IV, V, VI and VI+, reared from single family clutches under comparable environmental conditions in Ireland and Norway. Development in L. bergylta is typical of demersal marine finfish species with a short egg stage. Hatching occurred c. 123 h post-fertilization (hpf) equivalent to 62·5 degree days at 12·2 ± 1·10° C (mean ±s.d.), after which the larvae swam intermittently near the surface of the water column.  相似文献

Trichuris eggs were found in Kerodon rupestris (Rodentia, Caviidae) coprolites collected in archaeological layers dated from 30,000 yr BP (before present) to 8,450 yr BP. Adult worms and eggs of this genus were not found in a search of living mammals of the region. Results indicate that K. rupestris was a host for an unknown Trichuris species not found in this rodent presently. Climate changes that occurred by 10,000 yr ago in the region could be the cause of its disappearance. The finding of parasites in archaeological material can show the antiquity of host-parasite relationships and parasite losses through time.  相似文献

Gaps formed by stream laid gravels in a warm temperate Podocarp-Angiosperm rain forest in New Zealand were quickly invaded by 41 free-standing woody species. Height-age curves for the eight most frequent species were used to construct a 12 yr chronosequence which showed 18 species arrived by 0.9 yr and 33 by 1.9 yr. This rapid invasion was supplied from both gaps and mature forest and fitted the Initial Floristic Model coupled with a Facilitation Mechanism. Over the 12 yr period, stem density and births peaked at 0.9 yr and deaths at 1.9 yr with a natality of 39.5/m2, a mortality of 38.5/m2 and nearly 99% dying as seedlings. Plant height increased to 5.1 m at 12.1 yr with height increment peaking at 43 cm/yr at 7.3 yr. Maximum potential heights ranged from 4 to 60 m and were positively correlated with longevity which varied from 20 to 1150 yr for 19 known species. A decline in height increment to 0.9 yr showed a below-ground component in intraspecific competition with significant negative correlations between stem density and height indicating a later above-ground component. There was no significant height competition amongst the 11 most frequent species and only one significant negative interspecific association. This suggests high species coexistence for which Equal chance was probably the major mechanism. Given this coexistence, rapid species arrival, early sexual maturity and similar density and height-age patterns, the main dynamic variables may be maximum height, longevity and height increment, all of which are, partly, genetically programmed. Most dynamic affinities are with tropical forest, although height growth and species richness are warm temperate.  相似文献

The extremely skewed female-biased sex ratio in the desert moss Syntrichia caninervis was investigated by assessing the regeneration capacity of detached leaves. Juvenile, green, yellow-green, and brown leaves equating to approximately 0, 2, 6, and 12 yr of age, respectively, were detached from individuals of S. caninervis collected from 10 field populations and grown in a growth chamber for 58 d at a light intensity of 33-128 μmol · m(-2) · s(-1). Younger leaves (0-2 yr old) tended to have a greater viability, regenerate more quickly, extend their protonemal filaments farther, produce shoots (gametophores) more quickly, produce more shoots, and accumulate a greater biomass than older leaves (6 and 12 yr old). Among younger leaf classes, regenerating female leaves were more likely to produce a shoot than male leaves and produced more shoots than male leaves. The sexes did not differ significantly in time until protonemal emergence, linear extension of protonemata, or rate of biomass accumulation. However, protonemata of male leaves tended to emerge more quickly and produce a greater total biomass, ultimately consisting mostly of protonemata, than did female leaves. The more rapid proliferation of shoots by female leaf regenerants may help to explain the rarity of males in this species.  相似文献

Age at sexual maturity and timing of the mating season were determined in male Atlantic walruses ( Odobenus rosmarus rosmarus , L.) from the "North Water" subpopulation in northern Baffin Bay. Testes and epididymides of 174 male walruses (between 0 and 30 yr old) from NW Greenland (1987–1990) were studied macroscopically and a subset of 57 specimens was analyzed microscopically. In physically mature bulls ( i.e. , ≥12 yr old), sperm or apparently ripe spermatids were found between 9 November and 12 July. In younger walruses these signs of fertility were found in a few specimens (7–11 yr old) collected between 9 January and 28 May. The mating season seems to peak in January—April. The youngest sexually mature individual was 7 yr old and the oldest apparently immature individual was 13 yr old. Average age of sexual maturity was 10.9 yr (95% C.I.: 9–6–12.2 yr) and all were sexually mature by the time they were 14 yr old. The non-spermiogenetic testes and epididymides showed accelerated growth between about the 5–6th and about the 12–15th year of life, indicating that sexual maturation occurs during these years. The length of the baculum increased gradually until about 12–15 yr of age, when physical maturity was reached.  相似文献

The growth rates of juvenile smalltooth sawfish Pristis pectinata collected in Florida waters between 1999 and 2006 were investigated using length-frequency and tag-recapture data. Stretched total length ( L ST) data from 144 smalltooth sawfish (690–4960 mm) and 28 recaptures (775–2150 mm) were used for the analyses. Both methods indicated that growth was rapid during the first 2 years after birth. The L ST increased by 650–850 mm in the first year, and by 480–680 mm in the second year. Data for animals >2200 mm were limited, so growth beyond 2 years of age was uncertain. The von Bertalanffy growth parameters estimated from L ST frequency data were L = 6000 mm, K = 0·140 year−1 and t 0=−0·863 years. Growth rates over the size range for which tag-recapture data were available were similar to that from L ST frequency data. The growth rates reported are substantially faster than those previously assumed for this species and may have important implications for the recovery of this endangered species. There are conflicting data regarding the growth rates of older P. pectinata which need to be resolved with more data from the wild population before a complete understanding of the conservation implications can be obtained.  相似文献

Body length and axillary girth measurements of more than 600 free‐ranging Hawaiian monk seals from 1 to 20 yr old were analyzed. Comparison of fitted von Bertalanffy growth models confirmed there is no evidence of sexual dimorphism in this species. Substantial differences in growth patterns were detected among seven subpopulations representing the species entire geographic range. The age at which seals would be expected to attain a reference length of 180 cm ranged from just over 3 yr up to almost 7 yr at the various sites. Subpopulations exhibiting slower growth have previously been found to also exhibit lower age‐specific reproductive rates. Differences in growth of seals among sites likely indicate varying environmental conditions determining growth during the time periods represented in the sampled data.  相似文献

This paper summarizes the history of commercial exploitation of roundnose grenadier Coryphaenoides rupestris in the North Atlantic. Length frequencies of C. rupestris in 1993, from 400 to 1200 m on the slopes of the Rockall trough indicate a reduction since the 1970s in the modal length of fish found at 700–1000 m. Ages ranged from 2 to 50 years for males and 2 to 60 years for females, with most between 10–38 years. Females attained a greater asymptotic pre-anus length ( L =19.5 cm) than males ( L =15.5 cm) and had a greater weight for a given age (male W =761g, female W =1132g). This species may have a protracted spawning period. Using pre-anus lengths, 50% of male fish were mature at 10 cm (ages 8–10) while 50% of female fish were mature at 12 cm (ages 9–11). At the greatest depths sampled the length frequency of fish was bimodal with a hiatus between 9 and 11 cm (ages 8–12). Highest catch rates occurred on the Donegal slope in September at a depth of 800–1000 m.  相似文献

Three species of Arctic to cold-temperate amphi-Atlantic algae, all occurring also in the North Pacific, were tested for growth and/or survival at temperatures of −20 to 30°C. When isolates from both western and eastern Atlantic shores were tested side-by-side, it was found that thermal ecotypes may occur in such Arctic algae.Chaetomorpha melagonium was the most eurythermal of the 3 species. Isolates of this alga were alike in temperature tolerance and growth rate but Icelandic plants were more sensitive to the lethal temperature of 25°C than were more southerly isolates from both east and west. With regard toDevaleraea ramentacea, one Canadian isolate grew extraordinarily well at −2 and 0°C, and all tolerated temperatures 2–3°C higher than the lethal limit (18–20°C) of isolates from Europe. ConcerningPhycodrys rubens, both eastern and western isolates died at 20°C but European plants tolerated the lethal high temperature longer, were more sensitive to freezing, and attained more rapid growth at optimal temperatures. The intertidal species,C. melagonium andD. ramentacea, both survived freezing at −5 and −20°C, at least for short time periods.C. melagonium was more susceptible thanD. ramentacea to desiccation. Patterns of thermal tolerance may provide insight into the evolutionary history of seaweed species.  相似文献

Green wrasse, Labrus viridis (Linnaeus, 1758), is an endangered species in the southern Adriatic Sea, but it is also of interest for potential rearing in polyculture with other commercial species for the repopulation of areas where it is endangered or as a new aquaculture species. A parental stock of the green wrasse was kept in aquaria for six years. The spawning, embryonic and early larval development maintained under controlled laboratory conditions are described and illustrated. The average diameter of newly spawned eggs was 1.01±0.03 mm. Mature and fertilized eggs were attached to the tank bottom by mucus. Hatching started after 127 h at a mean temperature of 14.4±0.8°C. The average total length of newly hatched larvae was 4.80±0.22 mm. Absorption of the yolk-sac was completed after the 5th day when larvae reached 5.87±0.28 mm. Larvae were fed with the rotifers Brachionus plicatilis. The pigmentation of L. viridis larvae is similar to that of Labrus merula and Labrus bergylta, but the main differences between these species are in the size of larvae and the development time of the melanophores on the anal fin-fold (five days later than with L. merula) and on top of the head (nine days earlier than with L. merula).  相似文献

Secondary forests that develop following land abandonment could compensate for the losses of diversity and structure that accompany deforestation of old‐growth forests in tropical regions. Whether secondary forests can harbor similar species richness, density, and composition of old‐growth forests for vascular epiphytes remains largely unknown for secondary forests older than 50 yr. We examined community structure (species richness, density, and species composition) of vascular epiphytes in older secondary forests between 35 and 115 yr after land abandonment and nearby old‐growth forests to determine if the community structure of epiphytes in secondary forests approaches that of old‐growth forests over time. The recovery of epiphyte species richness was rapid with 55‐year‐old forests containing 65 percent of old‐growth epiphyte species richness. Secondary forest epiphyte communities were found to be statistically nested within secondary forests older in age and within old‐growth forests. Similarity of epiphyte communities to old‐growth forests increased to 75 percent, 115 yr after abandonment. This study suggests that secondary forests will likely recover old‐growth epiphyte richness and composition given enough time. Epiphyte densities did not recover quickly with 55‐year‐old forests having 14 percent and 115‐year‐old forests having only 49 percent of the density of old‐growth forest epiphytes. The low density of epiphytes in secondary forests could impact rainforest diversity and function. We conclude that in less than 115 yr, although secondary moist forests have high conservation value for some aspects of community structure, they are unlikely to compensate biologically for the loss of diversity and ecosystem function that high epiphyte densities provide.  相似文献

Growth and xylem water potential of the lower elevation conifers Pinus jeffreyi and Abies concolor and the higher elevation Pinus monticola and Abies magnifica were monitored in their montane Mediterranean habitat of the southernmost Sierra Nevada mountains of California. Measurements were made across the ecotone between the midmontane and upper montane forests and through light and heavy snowfall years.Radial stem growth, averaging ~1.5 mm/yr, started 2 wk after snow melt, providing that maximum air temperatures had reached 21°C, and ended when predawn water potentials fell rapidly at the onset of the summer drought. Leader growth started on or after a fixed date, providing that minimum air temperatures were above -4°C for Pinus species or +2.5°C for Abies species. The cue for leader growth was inferred to be photoperiodic. Leader growth ended when either a determinate internode length of ~1 mm was reached or predawn water potentials fell rapidly. Abies magnifica grew more rapidly than the low-elevation species, but had a shorter growth period; its annual leader growth, as a consequence, was only 35 mm/yr vs. 50 mm/yr for the low-elevation species. Needle growth was similarly determinate in the absence of early drought. This growth phenology contributes to determining species distribution across the ecotone.  相似文献

Four of the most common species of skate (Rajidae) were studied off eastern Canada to determine if their reproductive characteristics were linked to their population trajectories. The fecundity of the winter skate Leucoraja ocellata , the little skate Leucoraja erinacea , the thorny skate Amblyraja radiata and the smooth skate Malacoraja senta averaged between 41 and 56 egg cases per year for each species. For all species but L. ocellata , males matured at larger sizes and at later ages than females. Theoretical rates of population increase for non-equilibrium populations of L. ocellata ( c . 0·07), M. senta ( c . 0·14) and L. erinacea and A. radiata ( c . 0·20) were low compared to most fishes, indicating that north-west Atlantic skates are intrinsically unproductive, yet are theoretically capable of supporting low-level fisheries. Nevertheless, the results of 36 years of research surveys indicate that the abundance of mature L. ocellata , A. radiata and M. senta all decreased by >90% since 1970, indicating that past fishing mortality (both directed and undirected) has outstripped the net productivity of the skate populations on the eastern Scotian Shelf. The relationship between maximum age ( t max) and age of maturity ( t mat) was a better predictor of population growth rate than was body size, with the species exhibiting the highest ratios of t mat : t max ( L. ocellata = 0·68, M. senta = 0·66) having the lowest predicted population growth rates. L. ocellata appears to have the lowest productivity and has experienced the greatest population decline, thus raising concerns over its future status.  相似文献

Elastic recoil pressure of the lungs (Pst(L)), maximum expiratory flow rates (MEF), critical transmural pressure of the collapsible flow-limiting segment (Ptm'), and S-segment conductance (Gs) have been determined in 40 healthy subjects, 7-18 yr old. Pst(L), measured at different lung volumes (fractional) from the expiratory quasi-static pressure-volume curves, increases progressively with age. MEF's, at different lung volumes, are closely related to total lung capacity (TLC); the ratios MEF/TLC, at all lung volumes, are independent of age. Ptm' is also independence of age and body height, most values lying between 0 and -15 cmH2O; this finding suggests that the locus and the behavior of the collapsible segment do not change during growth. Gs, in absolute value, increases with growth but, when adjusted for lung size, Gs decreases steadily with age and body height. These relations suggest that, from childhood to adolescence, the air spaces grow disproportionately more than the airway system.  相似文献
