This paper presents an integrated model of convective O2-transport, aerobic dive limits (ADL), and thermochemical data for oxygen binding to mutant myoglobin (Mb), used to quantify the impact of mutations in Mb on the dive limits of Weddell seals (Leptonychotes weddellii). We find that wild-type Mb traits are only superior under specific behavioral and physiological conditions that critically prolong the ADL, action radius, and fitness of the seals. As an extreme example, the mutations in the conserved His-64 reduce ADL up to 14 ± 2 min for routine aerobic dives, whereas many other mutations are nearly neutral in terms of ADL and the inferred fitness. We also find that the cardiac system, the muscle O2-store, animal behavior (i.e. pre-dive ventilation), and the oxygen binding affinity of Mb, KO2, have co-evolved to optimize dive duration at routine aerobic diving conditions, suggesting that such conditions are mostly selected upon in seals. The model is capable of roughly quantifying the physiological impact of single-protein mutations and thus bridges an important gap between animal physiology and molecular (protein) evolution.  相似文献

Sea otter (Enhydra lutris kenyoni) foraging behavior and prey preference were studied from June to August 2001–2004 in Simpson Bay, Prince William Sound, Alaska. The study area has an average water depth of 30 m and a benthos primarily of soft- and mixed-sediment with no canopy-forming kelps. A total of 1816 foraging dives from 211 bouts were recorded. Overall, dives ranged in depth from <5 to 82 m; most dives were less than 15 m (40%) with smaller, secondary peaks at 25–30 m (10%) and 50–55 m (7%). Average dive depth and duration were 27 m ± 19.5 and 1.89 min ± 0.88, respectively. Dive durations were all significantly different: male > unknown > female. Dive depths reflected the bathymetry (percentage of the bay within a depth range) of Simpson Bay but favored shallow areas. 87% of foraging dives were successful, and 44% of the prey was positively identified: 75% clams, 9% Pacific blue mussels, 6% crabs, 2% Reddish scallops and a variety of other invertebrates. There was no evidence for prey specialization among the sexes. Although sea otters in Simpson Bay rely heavily on bivalves, their diet has remained unchanged for the past 18 years, and the minimum summer population has been constant for at least the past nine years. It appears that bivalves are the predominant and stable component of the diet, and their productivity is sufficient to sustain a stable population of sea otters with a minimum peak summer density of 4.3 adult otters km?2 and an average annual density of ca. 2.9 adult otters km?2 for the past nine years and probably longer.  相似文献

Thirty-three Holstein-Friesian cows were followed from 14 days pre partum until the fourth ovulation post partum. Housing conditions and basic ration were identical for all animals. Concentrates were individually supplemented according to the daily milk production level, using two different types of protein rich concentrates: soybean meal and rapeseed meal. Soybean and rapeseed meal are known to be respectively high and low in isoflavones. Cows were randomly divided into three groups and blocked for parity. Group I (n = 11) was supplemented with soybean meal and acted as control group. Groups II (n = 11) and III (n = 11) were respectively supplemented with soybean and rapeseed meal and were subjected to a biopsy sampling of the corpus luteum at day 9 of the first three postpartal estrous cycles.Soybean meal supplementation to lactating dairy cows (1.72 kg on average) induced an increase in the blood concentration of equol, dihydrodaidzein, o-desmethylangolensin in both soy groups and resulted in a reduced area occupied by steroidogenic (P = 0.012) and endothelial cells (P = 0.0007) in the luteal biopsies. Blood concentrations of equol and glycitein were negatively correlated with the areas occupied by steroidogenic (r = −0.410 with P = 0.0002, respectively r = −0.351 with P = 0.008) and endothelial cells (r = −0.337 with P = 0.01, respectively r = −0.233 with P = 0.085) in the 3 first estrous cycles. The latter however did not affect the diestrous peripheral blood progesterone concentration.  相似文献

Knowledge of the diving behaviour of aquatic animals expanded considerably with the invention of time-depth recorders (TDRs) in the 1960s. The large volume of data acquired from TDRs can be analyzed using dive analysis software, however, the application of the software has received relatively little attention. We present an empirical procedure to select optimum values that are critical to obtaining reliable results: the zero-offset correction (ZOC) and the dive threshold. We used dive data from shallow-diving coastal dugongs (Dugong dugon) and visual observations from an independent study to develop and test a procedure that minimizes errors in characterizing dives. We initially corrected the surface level using custom software. We then determined the optimum values for each parameter by classifying dives identified by an open-source dive analysis software into Plausible and Implausible dives based on the duration of dives. The Plausible dives were further classified as Unrecognized dives if they were not identified by the software but were of realistic dive duration. The comparison of these dive types indicated that a ZOC of 1 m and a dive threshold of 0.75 m were the optimum values for our dugong data as they gave the largest number of Plausible dives and smaller numbers of other dive types. Frequency distributions of dive durations from TDRs and independent visual observations supported the selection. Our procedure could be applied to other shallow-diving animals such as coastal dolphins and turtles.  相似文献

Risk factors that can determine knee and ankle injuries have been investigated and causes are probably multifactorial. A possible explanation could be related by the temporary inhibition of muscular control following an alteration of proprioceptive regulation due to the ankle imbalance pathology. The purpose of our study was to validate a new experimental set up to quantify two kinesiologic procedures (Shock Absorber Test (SAT) and Kendall and Kendall‘s Procedure (KKP)) to verify if a subtalus stimulus in an ankle with imbalance can induce a non-appropriate response of controlateral tensor fascia lata muscle (TFL). Fifteen male soccer players with ankle imbalance (AIG) and 14 healthy (CG) were tested after (TEST) before (NO-TEST) a manual percussion in subtalus joint (SAT). A new tailor-made device equipped with a load cell was used to quantify TFL‘s strength activation in standardized positions. Two trials for each subject were performed, separated by at least one 4-min resting interval. In NO-TEST conditions both AIG and CG showed a progressive adaptation of the subject to the force imposed by operator. No reduction in mean force, mean peak force, and muscle force duration (p > 0.5). AIG presented significant differences (mean difference 0.92 ± 0.46 s; p = 0.000) in muscle force duration in TEST conditions. Our results indicated that “wrong” proprioceptive stimuli coming from the subtalus joint in AIG might induce inhibition in terms of duration of TFL muscle altering the knee stability. This kinesiological evaluation might be useful to prevent ankle and knee injuries.  相似文献

This study was carried out to investigate diet selection and eating behaviour of lactating German Fawn × Hair Crossbred goats in different feeding methods and levels. Twenty German Fawn × Hair first backcross does (B1) were allocated into 4 treatment groups (2 feeding methods single (TMR) and choice feeding × 2 feeding levels ad libitum and restricted) with 5 replicates. Restricted feeding was applied only 4 h feed allocation during day. Barley, corn, soybean meal, corn gluten meal, wheat bran and alfalfa hay were feed ingredients for single and choice feeding. Eating patterns, milk yield and composition were determined for 8 weeks. The following results were obtained: (1) the meal criteria for goats restricted single and choice-fed, ad libitum single and choice-fed were determined as 1.00 and 0.63, 12.88 and 10.23 min, respectively. (2) Ad libitum feeding increased meal size, meal length, intermeal interval, total eating duration and decreased eating rate and meal number, compared to restricted feeding (P < 0.01). Choice feeding decreased meal size (P < 0.05), meal length (P < 0.01) and increased eating rate and meal number (P < 0.01), compared to single feeding. Restricted fed goats decreased intermeal interval in single feeding compared to choice feeding (P < 0.01), but increased meal number in choice feeding (P < 0.01). (3) Ad libitum choice-fed does made a diet containing 12.79% corn, 35.41% barley, 13.21% wheat bran, 5.35% soybean meal, 1.28% corn gluten meal and 29.80% alfalfa meal while restricted choice-fed does made a diet having more corn (27.69%), corn gluten meal (5.62%) and wheat bran (16.17%) and less barley (14.37%) and soybean meal (4.51%). (4) Choice feeding decreased RUP intake (P < 0.05) without affecting milk protein, irrespective to feeding levels, while having a tendency to increase in milk yield (14.2%) and 4% FCM (8.8%). (5) Restricted feeding decreased DM, ME, ADF and NDF intakes (P < 0.05) with concomitant decreases in 4% FCM, total milk solid, ash and fat compositions (P < 0.05), irrespective to feeding methods. (6) Choice-fed goats changed their preferences for a possible synchronized nutrient intake during a daytime, as sorted barley, soybean meal and alfalfa hay from early morning to late afternoon.It could be concluded that choice-fed goats have the ability to make their diet to meet nutrient requirements and had a tendency to increase in milk yield. Restriction in feeding time resulted in lower feed intake and milk yield, although the animal changed their feed preference in favour of high quality ingredients and eating pattern with lower meal criterion and intermeal interval.  相似文献

Before meal patterns can be analysed properly, a biologically relevant meal criterion must be determined in order to group short-term feeding behaviour into meals. Existing methodologies are based on modelling of the frequency distributions of intervals between feeding events but these methods cannot be used if the proper distributions cannot be clearly identified. For such cases we developed two new methods – (1) based on the analysis of the distribution of between-meal interval lengths only and (2) based on the analysis of changes in the probability of animals starting to feed with time since the last feeding event. Both methods were developed using a data set of over 700,000 records of visits to feeders obtained with broilers (Gallus gallus) aged between 2 and 5 weeks. The two methods resulted in meal criteria estimates of 20.1 and 17.5 min, respectively, which, when applied to the data set, gave statistically significant but very small differences in meal characteristics. The new methods were tested against an independent cow (Bos taurus) data set and the resultant meal criteria compared with those predicted by an existing method. The two novel methods estimated meal criteria for cows at 27.9 and 35.5 min, compared with 28.9 min for the existing method. Again, these differences in meal criteria resulted in only very small differences in meal characteristics. Even though meal criteria were relatively similar for birds and cows, characteristics such as average daily number of meals (10.9 and 5.9), meal size (12.5 g and 7.4 kg) and meal duration (7.7 and 31.4 min) were very different. The analyses show that, if the appropriate distributions of intervals cannot be identified, meal criteria can still be estimated for species as diverse as mature cows and young birds by the novel methodologies developed here.  相似文献

This study was carried out to compare behavioural activities of Awassi lambs in cafeteria feeding system with conventional feeding (control) that animals fed concentrate. Sixteen, 3-month-old male lambs were housed individually for 42 days. The main effect was on the feeding systems, cafeteria and control. Cafeteria lambs (n=8) were offered the main ingredients (barley, cotton seed meal (CSM), wheat bran and alfalfa straw), while control animals (n=8) were fed a single diet (48% barley, 22% cottonseed meal, 18% wheat bran, 10% alfalfa and 2% vitamin–mineral mixture; having 2467 Kcal ME and 161 g kg−1) with the same main ingredients with slightly higher nutrient content for growth. Food and water intakes were recorded daily, while behavioural observations were recorded twice a week for a period of 1 h at 5 min intervals at 13:00, 16:00, 19:00, 22:00, 01:00, 04:00, 07:00 and 10:00 h after the initiation of daily feeding. After every 5 min, each lamb was monitored to determine its eating, ruminating, drinking, walking, standing, playing, resting and other activities.Cafeteria lambs selected a diet that matched their growth requirement as did control lambs. However, cafeteria lambs ate more (P<0.01). Cafeteria animals preferred cotton seed meal (42.4%) to barley (32.9%) without changing their water intake, final live weight and daily gain (P>0.05). Cafeteria lambs also had higher rates of eating (22% versus 19%, P<0.01), ruminating (24% versus 23%, P>0.05) and resting (29% versus 23%, P<0.01) than the control lambs. On the other hand, cafeteria lambs spent less time standing (19% versus 25%, P<0.01) and walking (1.5% versus 2.1%, P<0.01) compared with control animals. In conclusion, cafeteria lambs selected a diet that matched their presumed biological (behavioral and nutritional) needs without changing their growth performance.  相似文献

Dogfish sharks are opportunistic predators, eating large meals at irregular intervals. Here we present a synthesis of data from several previous studies on responses in plasma metabolites after natural feeding and during prolonged fasting (up to 56 days), together with new data on changes in plasma concentrations of amino acids and non-esterified fatty acids. Post-prandial and long-term fasting responses were compared to control sharks fasted for 7 days, a typical inter-meal interval. A feeding frenzy was created in which dogfish were allowed to feed naturally on dead teleosts at two consumed ration levels, 2.6% and 5.5% of body weight. Most responses were more pronounced at the higher ration level. These included increases in urea and TMAO concentrations at 20 h, followed by stability through to 56 days of fasting. Ammonia levels were low and exhibited little short-term response to feeding, but declined to very low values during the extended fast. Glucose and β-hydroxybutyrate both fell after feeding, the latter to a greater and more prolonged extent (up to 60 h), whereas acetoacetate did not change. During prolonged fasting, glucose concentrations were well regulated, but β-hydroxybutyrate increased to 2–3-fold control levels. Total plasma amino acid concentrations increased in a biphasic fashion, with peaks at 6–20 h, and 48–60 h after the meal, followed by homeostasis during the extended fast. Essential and non-essential amino acids generally followed this same pattern, though some exhibited different trends after feeding: taurine, β-alanine, and glycine (decreases or stability), alanine and glutamine (modest prolonged increases), and threonine, serine, asparagine, and valine (much larger short-term increases). Plasma non-esterified fatty acid concentrations declined markedly through 48 h after the 2.6% meal. These data are interpreted in light of companion studies showing elevations in aerobic metabolic rate, urea production, rectal gland function, metabolic base excretion, and activation of ornithine–urea cycle and aerobic enzymes after the meal, and muscle N-depletion but maintenance of osmolality and urea production during long-term fasting.  相似文献

The aim of the work was to determine the effects of feeding winter veld hay plus a supplement on scrotal, testicular and semen characteristics in young Boer goat bucks. Fifteen Boer goat bucks (6–8 months of age), were allocated to two groups and fed ad libitum for a period of 29 days. The WH group (winter hay or control group; n = 8) received a chopped diet consisting of grass hay, predominantly Themeda triandra grass (cut during the winter) from natural pastures (veld). The WH + S group (winter hay plus supplement; n = 7) received the same diet consisting of Themeda triandra veld hay and supplemented with maize meal, molasses meal and urea. Body weights and feed intake were recorded, as well as scrotal, testicular and semen characteristics. Results indicate a detrimental effect of winter veld hay feeding on characteristics such as sperm cell abnormalities (43% in the WH group versus 24% in WH group), testicular volume (156 ml in the WH + S group versus 104 ml for WH animals) or scrotal circumference (20.7 cm in WH + S group versus 17.7 cm in WH group). It is essential to supplement the nutrition of small ruminants under winter environments, to maintain scrotal, testicular and semen characteristics, especially if the animals are to be used in the subsequent breeding season.  相似文献

The current study examined the effects of 12 weeks of surface neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) and ankle weights on the cross-sectional areas (CSAs) of three thigh [Gracilis (Gra), Sartorious (Sar) and Adductor (Add)] as well as two trunk [hip flexor (HF) and back extensor (BE)] muscle groups in men with spinal cord injury (SCI). Seven individuals with chronic motor complete SCI were randomly assigned into a resistance training + diet (RT + diet; n = 4) or diet control (n = 3) groups. The RT + diet group underwent twice weekly training with surface NMES and ankle weights for 12 weeks. Training composed of four sets of 10 repetitions of leg extension exercise while sitting in their wheelchairs. Both groups were asked to monitor their dietary intake. Magnetic resonance images were captured before and after 12 weeks of interventions. Gra muscle CSA showed no change before and after interventions. A significant interaction (P = 0.001) was noted between both groups as result of 9% increase and 10% decrease in the Gra muscle CSA of the RT + diet and diet groups, respectively. Sar muscle CSA increased [1.7 ± 0.4–2.5 ± 0.5 cm2; P = 0.029] in the RT + diet group with no change [2.9 ± 1.4–2.6 ± 1.3 cm2] in the diet group; with interaction noted between both groups (P = 0.002). Analysis of covariance indicated that Add muscle CSA was 38% greater in the RT + diet compared to the diet group (P = 0.025) after 12 weeks; a trend of interaction was also noted between both groups (P = 0.06). HF and BE muscle groups showed no apparent changes in CSA in both groups. The results suggested that surface NMES can delay the process of progressive skeletal muscle atrophy after chronic SCI. However, the effects are localized to the trained thigh muscles and do not extend to the proximal trunk muscles.  相似文献

Food restriction is one of the major and most common constraints that subterranean animals face in their biotope. Cave-dwelling organisms thus have to cope with fasting periods that can extend from a month to a year. However, adaptive fasting resistance previously found in subterranean fauna has only been highlighted by direct comparisons with phylogenetically distant epigean organisms, which could severely impact conclusions. Here we report physiological and metabolic responses to 42 days of fasting followed by 10 days of refeeding in two populations (one subterranean and one epigean) of Calotriton asper. In the fed state (control), the hypogean population exhibited a hypometabolism together with higher glycogen (+ 25% in liver and muscles) and triglyceride stores (+ 50% in muscles). During the fasting period, cave individuals exhibited a 20% decrease in VO2 whereas epigean individuals experienced no significant change. In addition, the energetic reserves always remained higher in the hypogean population. According to phylogenic and biogeographic data, cave colonization by this species dates back to less than 10,000 years, suggesting a rapid selection of adaptive traits related to fasting. This study strongly suggests that cave colonization induces a decrease in metabolism together with a higher capacity to accumulate energy reserves and therefore to withstand unpredictable fasting periods.  相似文献

Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) is frequently encountered in hospitalized patients where it is associated with increased mortality and morbidity notably affecting muscle wasting. Increased protein degradation has been shown to be the main actor of AKI-induced muscle atrophy, but the proteolytic pathways involved are poorly known. The Ubiquitin Proteasome System (UPS) is almost systematically activated in various catabolic situations, and the E3 ligases MuRF1 and MAFbx are generally up regulated in atrophying muscles. We hypothesized that the UPS may be one of the main actors in catabolic skeletal muscles from AKI animals. We used gentamicin-induced acute kidney disease (G-AKI) in rats fed a high protein diet to promote acidosis. We first addressed the impact of G-AKI in the development of mild catabolic conditions. We found that both muscle atrophy and UPS activation were induced with the development of G-AKI. In addition, the phasic muscles were more sensitive to 7-days G-AKI (−11 to −17%, P < 0.05) than the antigravity soleus muscle (−11%, NS), indicating a differential impact of AKI in the musculature. We observed an increased expression of the muscle-specific E3 ligases MuRF1 and MAFbx in phasic muscles that was highly correlated to the G-AKI severity (R2 = 0.64, P < 0.01 and R2 = 0.71, P < 0.005 respectively). Conversely, we observed no variation in the expression of three other E3 ligases (Nedd4, Trim32 and Fbxo30/MUSA1). Altogether, our data indicate that MuRF1 and MAFbx are sensitive markers and potential targets to prevent muscle atrophy during G-AKI.  相似文献

We aimed to characterize rectus abdominis, internal oblique, and external oblique muscle activity in healthy adults under expiratory resistance using surface electromyography. We randomly assigned 42 healthy adult subjects to 3 groups: 30%, 20%, and 10% maximal expiratory intraoral pressure (PEmax). After measuring 100% PEmax and muscle activity during 100% PEmax, the activity and maximum voluntary contraction of each muscle during the assigned experimental condition were measured. At 100% PEmax, the external oblique (p < 0.01) and internal oblique (p < 0.01) showed significantly elevated activity compared with the rectus abdominis muscle. Furthermore, at 20% and 30% PEmax, the external oblique (p < 0.05 and < 0.01, respectively) and the internal oblique (p < 0.05 and < 0.01, respectively) showed significantly elevated activity compared with the rectus abdominis muscle. At 10% PEmax, no significant differences were observed in muscle activity.Although we observed no significant difference between 10% and 20% PEmax, activity during 30% PEmax was significantly greater than during 20% PEmax (external oblique: p < 0.05; internal oblique: p < 0.01). The abdominal oblique muscles are the most active during forced expiration. Moreover, 30% PEmax is the minimum intensity required to achieve significant, albeit very slight, muscle activity during expiratory resistance.  相似文献

The availability of food sources is important for parasitoid survival, especially for those that inhabit ecosystems where nectar and honeydew are spatially or temporally scarce. Therefore, the value of even a single meal can be crucial for survival. Psyttalia lounsburyi is a parasitoid, and biological control agent, of the olive fruit fly, Bactrocera oleae. In order to improve our understanding of the basic nutritional ecology of P. lounsburyi and its role in survival we evaluated the effect of a single sucrose meal on the longevity of female and male wasps. We measured the duration of feeding, volume ingested, sucrose consumption, energy content, and longevity of wasps provided with different concentrations of sucrose (0.5, 1, and 2 M) at different times after emergence (0, 1, 2 or 3 days after emergence). Our results showed that longevity was significantly influenced by sucrose concentration and timing of feeding. For females, feeding on sucrose increased the likelihood of survival to varying degrees, ranging from 32.3% to 95.4%, compared to water-only controls. The longest duration of feeding was observed for the highest sucrose concentrations and oldest wasps. The amount of sugar ingested and energy uptake increased, up to a point, as sugar concentration increased. Our results suggest that P. lounsburyi derived greatest benefit from the intermediate concentration (1 M) of sucrose provided 2 or 3 days after emergence. Our study emphasizes the importance of finding balance between increasing longevity and limiting the duration of feeding, and concomitant uptake of nutrients, that is fundamental for survival of the wasp in nature.  相似文献

Scope: Daily bilateral electromyography (EMG) recordings reveal muscle activation patterns implicated in asymmetric Parkinson’s disease (PD)-related functional decline. Also, daily EMG recordings reveal sex-differences in muscle activity that give rise to unique PD presentation in males and females. Purpose: Quantify handgrip strength and daily muscle quiescence through analysis of gaps in the EMG signal in males and females with PD. Bilateral daily EMG was recorded and normalized to maximal voluntary exertions (MVE). EMG gap was defined as <1% amplitude of MVE for >0.1 s and characterized as number, duration and time occupied by gaps. A dynamometer evaluated maximal grip-strength. Three-way repeated measures ANOVA examined differences in gap characteristics and strength. Gap duration was shorter (p = 0.04) and occupied less time (p = 0.02) in PD than controls. Females had fewer gaps with shorter duration (p = 0.004), occupying less time (p = 0.004) compared with males. Gaps were fewer (p = 0.04) and occupied less time (p = 0.01) on more-affected than less-affected side. PD was weaker than controls (p = 0.04), females were weaker than males (p = 0.00), and the more-affected PD side was weaker than less-affected (p = 0.04). Conclusions: Quantification of muscle quiescence through gaps in the EMG signal recorded during daily life provides insight into mechanisms underlying differential change in functional performance in males and females with PD.  相似文献

The objective was to look for the promising tree leaves, for feeding to livestock. The preliminary screening of tree leaves (nine species) by in vitro gas production technique revealed that leaves of Azadirachta indica, Melia azedarach, Morus alba and Leucaena leucocephala could serve as promising, alternate feed resource for ruminants. Therefore, in vivo evaluation of these tree leaves (except A. indica) along with that of Toona ciliate was assessed. Each species of the fresh tree leaves, supplemented with mineral mixture and common salt, was offered ad lib as complete feed to three bucks (Beetle × Anglo Nubian × French Alpine; 6 years old of 56.7 ± 1.12 kg BW). The data were analyzed by using completely randomized design. Bucks relished all the tree leaves (except T. ciliate) as indicated by higher (P < 0.05) voluntary DM intake and digestibility of nutrients. All the animals were in positive N-balance except those fed Toona ciliate. The N-retention was maximum in animals fed M. alba followed by that in L. leucocephala and M. azedarach. However, the DCP content of M. alba, M. azedarach and L. leucocephala was statistically comparable, while ME availability was higher (P < 0.05) from leaves of M. azedarach followed by that of M. alba, clearly indicated that leaves of M. azedarach, M. alba or L. leucocephala, supplemented with mineral mixture and common salt, could serve as an excellent complete feed for small ruminants.  相似文献

The presumption that organisms benefit from thermal acclimation has been widely debated in the literature. The ability to thermally acclimate to offset temperature effects on physiological function is prevalent in ectotherms that are unable to thermoregulate year-round to maintain performance. In this study we examined the physiological and behavioural consequences of long-term exposure to different water temperatures in the aquatic snake Acrochordus arafurae. We hypothesised that long dives would benefit this species by reducing the likelihood of avian predation. To achieve longer dives at high temperatures, we predicted that thermal acclimation of A. arafurae would reduce metabolic rate and increase use of aquatic respiration. Acrochordus arafurae were held at 24 or 32°C for 3 months before dive duration and physiological factors were assessed (at both 24 and 32°C). Although filesnakes demonstrated thermal acclimation of metabolic rate, use of aquatic respiration was thermally independent and did not acclimate. Mean dive duration did not differ between the acclimation groups at either temperature; however, warm-acclimated animals increased maximum and modal dive duration, demonstrating a longer dive duration capacity. Our study established that A. arafurae is capable of thermal acclimation and this confers a benefit to the diving abilities of this snake.  相似文献

Diving behavior of 2 breeding Chinstrap penguins (Pygoscelis antarctica) was studied focusing first and primarily on dive bouts rather than dives themselves. Analysis of dive bout organization revealed (1) though there are differences between solitary dives and dive bouts in dive duration and dive depth, the first dives of dive bouts do not differ from solitary dives in the dive parameters, (2) mean dive duration during bout correlates positively to both mean dive depth during bout and mean surface interval during bout, while number of dives during bout negatively correlates to both cost (consumed energy) and duration of a dive cycle during bout. These findings suggest the following possibilities on foraging behavior of penguins: (1) their decision to repeat diving depends on the result of the first dive at a site, and the first dives of bouts would tend to be searching or evaluating dives though they would be also successful foraging dives, (2) they repeat diving at a foraging patch until foraging efficiency decrease to a threshold of diminishing returns.  相似文献
