At Isla del Caño, Costa Rica, the main reef bioeroders are species of the boring bivalve, Lithophaga. These mussels are abundant in virtually all colonies of the main framework builder, Porites lobata. The bivalves have a significant effect on the strength of the colonies which, at a maximum compressive and bending strength of 20 and 5 MN/m2, respectively, are already the lowest ever measured for corals. Presence of bivalve boreholes is inversely logarithmically associated with coral strength, with the greatest decrease in strength occurring with the first boreholes.  相似文献

Summary The reefs near Safaga, Egypt, are built mainly by coral species ofPorites andAcropora. These genera are in general important for the formation of coral communities and reef structures. WhileMontipora orPavona are also species rich, their mean colony size is too small for a substantial role in the build-up of carbonate mass. Yet as a host coral,Montipora is more important thanPorites; both may accommodate the pectinidPedum and certain species of mytilidLithophaga. Such associations appear to be typical for specific reef areas and to be correlated to the food supply of the bivalves. These findings can be used for an actuopaleontological interpretation of the fossil situation. In addition to the frequency of occurrence, factors such as the growth form, growth rate, skeletal density and lifespan of corals are essential in determining their share in reef construction.  相似文献

The mytilid bivalveBotula cordata (Lamarck) from the Upper Eocene of the Venetian region, northern Italy, bored into live soft bottom corals, which reacted by forming a calcareous interseptal filling around the borehole. A chemical etching mechanism is inferred from the presence of “etch marks” on the borehole walls. The association with free-living corals capable of counteracting burial by sedimentation or accidental overturning enhanced the survival potential of the bivalve on the soft bottoms. Commensalism with soft bottom corals appears to have evolved convergently at least three times within the Mytilidae, but is unknown among other bivalves.  相似文献

Summary The Upper Rhaetian coral limestone of Adnet, southeast of Salzburg Austria has been repeatedly referred to as one of the most spectacular examples of an ancient ‘autochthonous’ coral reef structure. The ‘Tropfbruch’ quarry is probably the best outcrop for interpreting the distributional patterns of biotic successions and communities of a late Triassic patch reef. Our study is based on the interpretation of a) outcrop photographs, b) reef maps resulting from quadrat transects, and c) the analysis of quantitative data describing the distribution and frequency of reef organisms and sediment. A new methodological approach (combination of reef mapping and photo-transects) is used to obtain quantitative field data which can be compared in greater detail with data from modern coral reefs investigated by corresponding quantitative surveys. Three unconformities and three well-defined ‘reef growth stages’ reflecting the vertical and lateral development of the reef structure were differrentiated using transects: Stage 1, representing the reef growth optimum, is characterized by laterally differentiated coral reef knobs with corals in growth position. Criteria supporting this interpretation are the extraordinary size of the corals, their preservation in situ and the great thickness of this interval. The massive coralPamiroseris grew under higher energy conditions at the rim of the reef knob, whereas branchingRetiophyllia colonies preferred less agitated water in the center. Vertical changes are reflected by an increase in frequency of the dasycladacean algaDiplopora adnetensis and by the decreasing size ofRetiophyllia. These sedimentological and biological criteria together with the unconformity above indicate a fall in the sea level as a major control mechanism. Stage 2, separated from stage 1 by an unconformity caused by partial subaerial exposure and karstification, is characterized by vertically stacked coral successions with diverse reef debris. Facies heterogeneity is reflected by differences in the diversity, taphonomy and packing density of reef-building organisms as well as by differences in sediment input from the platform. Water depths and accommodation space were lower, therefore minor sea level fluctuations had a stronger effect on the biotic composition. The high percentage of coral debris and corals reworked by storms and the increase in the input of platform sediment led to a reduction of reef growth. Stage 3, again separated at the base by an unconformity associated with karstification, is characterized by bioclastic sediments with isolated reefbuilders forming a level-bottom community. The distribution of different coral morphotypes suggests that sea level fluctuations were not the only controlling factor. Variations in the substrate were caused by differences in the input of platform sediment. The three-step development seen in Adnet documents the response of low-diverse coral associations to variations caused by small-scale sea level changes, storm activity and sedimentation. The vertical changes in reef community structures correspond to a sequence of ‘allogenic replacements’. The Adnet reef structure should not be regarded as a general model of Alpine Upper Rhaetian reefs, because of the particular setting of the patch reef. Only the ‘capping beds’ of the Upper Rhaetian Reef Limestone of the Steinplatte exhibit criteria similar to Adnet. Potential modern analogues of features seen in the coral communities of Adnet are the internal structure of theRetiophyllia thickets, the key role of branching corals within the communities, the scattered distribution and low and even diversity of corals subsequent to breaks in settlement, segration patterns of corals indicating ‘contact avoidance’, toppling of large coral colonies by intensive boring, and decreasing coral coverage from deeper and sheltered settings to more shallower water depths.  相似文献

Bioerosion is an important limiting factor in carbonate accretion and reef framework development; however, few studies have quantified the direct impact of macroborers on high-latitude coral communities, which are viewed as potential refuge during a period of global warming. In this study, internal macrobioerosion of Porites corals was examined at Daya Bay, subtropical northern South China Sea. The principal borers were the bivalve Lithophaga spp. and the sponges Cliona spp. and Cliothosa spp. (≥80 %), while sipunculid and polychaete worms and barnacles accounted for small amounts of bioerosion (≤20 %). Porites corals were heavily bioeroded in areas impacted by aquacultural and urban activities (10.34–27.55 %) compared with corals in relatively unpolluted areas (2.18–6.76 %). High levels of bioerosion, especially boring bivalve infestation, significantly weaken the corals and increase their susceptibility to dislodgement and fragmentation in typhoons, limiting accumulation of limestone framework. This study implies that carbonate accretion and reef development for high-latitude coral communities may be limited in future high-CO2 and eutrophication-stressed environments.  相似文献

Summary A short-term experiment was conducted to examine the relationships among the branching coral Porites porites, algal epibionts, and a facultative crab associate Mithrax sculptus in Belize, Central America. Initial field observations suggested that coral colonies supporting resident crabs generally had lower algal cover than colonies without crabs. The hypothesis was tested that Mithrax significantly depresses host coral algal cover and thereby indirectly affects host survivorship and growth. Crab accessibility to an array of coral colonies, similarly covered with algal epibionts, was manipulated in three treatments. Results strongly support the hypothesis, with significant differences in algal cover (primarily Dictyota spp.) noted among treatments after only one month. Caged heads with crabs included and uncaged natural controls allowing crabs free access averaged less than 10% cover, whereas mean algal cover exceeded 75% where crabs were excluded. The uncaged treatment, in which crabs were allowed free access to Porites heads was not significantly different from the crab inclusion treatment. Collectively, these results demonstrate that under natural conditions, crabs can have pronounced effects on host corals by reducing fouling algal epibionts. Furthermore, these facultative coral associates may have more important, albeit localized effects on Caribbean corals than has been suggested previously.  相似文献

The serological investigations support the opinion ofJanchen (1942) to combine the generaBunias, Isatis, andSisymbrium in the tribeSisymbrieae; Cheiranthus, Erysimum, andMatthiola in the tribeHesperideae; andBrassica, Crambe, Sinapis, andSuccowia in the tribeBrassiceae. They further underline the central position of theSisymbrieae and the isolated position of theHeliophileae. No serological justification could be found to uniteArabis andBarbarea in the tribeArabideae, andAlyssum andLunaria in theAlysseae. From the antigen-systems used among the representatives ofJanchen's Lepidieae the generaLepidium andNeslia show remarkable correspondence both toCamelina andThlaspi, but not toCochlearia which appears distant fromCamelina andThlaspi also.

The potentially negative effects of increased sedimentation on corals are well documented, whereas, the impacts upon early diagenetic processes, such as bioerosion, remain poorly understood. This study examined macroboring through image analysis of coral slabs from two high sedimentation and turbid reefs, Columbus Park and Red Buoy, within Discovery Bay, north Jamaica. Infestation of coral framework by macroborers was significant at both Columbus Park and Red Buoy for all depth zones sampled: 0–8 m (6.5 versus 8.3%), 8–16 m (11.4 versus 10.7%), and 16–25 m (6.2 versus 18.5%), with only the deepest zone significantly different (P<0.001). Bioeroding communities exhibit a shift from mainly sponge-dominated (>90%) assemblages in clear-water settings towards a greater relative importance of worms (up to 17.2%) and bivalves (up to 40.5%) with increasing sedimentation. The high infestation levels of the bivalve Lithophaga spp. offset the reduced sponge bioerosion. As a result, macroboring infestation levels are comparable to those reported from adjacent clear-water reef sites. This study indicates that macroboring of coral framework continues under environmental conditions previously inferred to be detrimental to coral growth and survival.  相似文献

The paper presents a comparative account of embryo development inPycreus pumilus Nees.,Cyperus alternifolius Willd.,Mariscus paniceus Vahl. andRemirea maritima Abul., belonging to the tribeCypereae. Embryogeny follows the Juncus variation of the Onagrad type or conforms to Period I, Series A2, Megarchetype IV. InPycreus andRemirea the precocious differentiation of dermatogen initials is followed by that of plerome and periblem elements. Mature embryos ofPycreus, Mariscus, andRemirea are identical withCyperus. Embryogeny and structure of mature embryo support the fusion of these taxa withCyperus. The five annual species ofAdonis L., sect.Adonis, growing in Israel, form a series of diploid, tetraploid and hexaploid species. Their somatic chromosome numbers are 2n = 16 inA. annua L.,A. dentata Del. andA. palaestina Boiss., 2n = 32 inA. microcarpa DC., 2n = 48 inA. aestivalis L.; counts forA. dentata, A. palaestina andA. microcarpa are new records. There are indications that alloploidization may have been involved in the process of speciation in sect.Adonis. A taxonomic survey of the 8 species of the section reveals that a higher ploidy level is usually combined with a larger distribution area.  相似文献

The tandemly repeated multigene families encoding 18S and 25S rRNAs were studied at the restriction enzyme level inPopulus alba L.,Populus deltoides Bartr. exMarsh.,Populus trichocarpa Torr. & Gray and in the hybrids between the last two mentioned species. The analysis of single and double digestion with EcoRI, BamHI, XbaI, and SstI endonucleases showed the presence of single repetitive unit types of 12.25 and 11.75kb inP. alba andP. trichocarpa, respectively.P. deltoides showed two rDNA gene types having the same length (12.25Kb) but different nucleotide sequence in the IGS. Form-Pfs sieve-element plastids were found inTriplaris, Ruprechtia, andCoccoloba (Polygonaceae) while other genera of the family and those studied from the often associatedPlumbaginaceae contain S-type sieve-element plastids. The rareness of form-Pfs plastids among the angiosperms, their similarity to the peculiar form-P3fs plastids of theChenopodiineae, and the comparatively small plastid diameters measured for all forms present in theCaryophyllales, Polygonales, andPlumbaginales suggest close relationships between these taxa. The restriction inPolygonaceae of form-Pfs plastids to the closely allied tribesTriplareae andCoccolobeae is discussed with regard to both the intrafamilial and ordinal phylogeny, and also considering possible connections to the only magnoliidaean Pfs-taxonCanella. Random shell sections of the Pliensbachian (Early Jurassic) larger bivalve Opisoma from columns within the Main Post Office building of Ferrara, northern Italy, have been discovered to bear neat clavate-shape boreholes. These boreholes belong to the ichnogenus Gastrochaenolites Leymerie and represent bivalve borings. Opisoma is a subordinate component of the Lithiotis fauna characterised by aberrant shells thriving in tropical lagoonal settings which were widespread throughout the Tethyan and Panthalassa coasts. Although the Lithiotis fauna is well known in the palaeontological literature, no bivalve boring have been so far been formally described. The uniqueness of the morphology, size and substrate of these borings merits the designation of the new species Gastrochaenolites messisbugi ichnosp. nov. which thereby represents the first ichnospecies described from this fauna. The morphology of the boreholes and the included bivalves allows the boring activity to be ascribed to a mytilid bivalve. Palaeoecological and taphonomic analyses allowed the presence of the boreholes to be correlated to the Opisoma mode of life (epifaunal, free-living form) as well as to generally low sedimentation rates and seasonal mesotrophic conditions during an overall oligotrophic regime.

In 83 species of the familiesMonotropaceae, Apocynaceae, Oleaceae, Scrophulariaceae, Lentibulariaceae, Bignoniaceae, Martyniaceae, Myoporaceae, Verbenaceae, Lamiaceae, Campanulaceae, andLiliaceae, protein bodies in the cell nuclei have been found, in 68 of these species for the first time. On the basis of their structure in accordance with morphological characters the generaBurgsdorfia, Hesiodia, Olisia, andPhlomoides of theLamiaceae are accepted;Lamium is divided intoLamium, Lamiastrum andOrvala; two new combinations are established:Kickxia campyloceras (Rech. fil. &Esfandiari)Speta andEtornotus papilionaceus (Burm. in L.)Speta. Deviating shape or lack of protein bodies corroborate former taxonomic decisions, e.g. the transfer ofMonotropa toMonotropaceae or the separation ofGaleopsis andLadanum; Veronica schmidtiana should not be included inPseudolysimachion. Systematic affinities are discussed primarily withinScrophulariaceae because nuclear protein bodies have been studied already in many species of this family. ForCampanula patula two 2 x populations are reported.

The numbers of boring bivalves in corals in large museum collections were used to indicate relative bioerosional damage to the corals. The proportion of corals from different locations that contain boring bivalves is highly correlated with global patterns of plankton primary productivity. The densities of five other, non-boring, groups of plantivores associated with the same corals are similarly correlated with productivity.The proportion of corals containing boring bivalves and the number of boring bivalves per coral head can be ranked by region as follows: eastern Pacific > western Atlantic > Indian Ocean > western Pacific. This ranking also corresponds to primary productivity differences.Measurements of the basal, margin of live tissue, and maximum circumstances of the coral heads indicate that western Atlantic massive corals have more of their skeletal surface exposed to borers, i.e. not covered by live tissue, than do Indo-Pacific corals. Consequently, the former also have weaker basal attachments which suggests that they are more likely to be dislodged during storms. The reason why massive corals in the western Atlantic tend to have less of their skeleton covered by live tissue than corals in the rest of the world is unknown.  相似文献

A rare example of a North American Jurassic hardground is found in the Carmel Formation of southwestern Utah. The Carmel hard‐ground was formed across a carbonate lagoon from an oolitic shoal seaward to a subtidal shelly facies landward. It has an abundant bivalve fauna consisting of thick layers of encrusters (the oyster Liostrea and the plicatulid Plicatula), borers (the ichnofossil Gastro‐chaenolites with the mytilid Lithophaga often preserved inside), and nestlers (the mytilid Modiolus). A rare soft‐bodied bryozoan (Arach‐nidium) is preserved by bioimmuration in the attachment scars of Liostrea; this is the first bioimmuration recorded from the Jurassic of North America, and the first bioimmuration recorded from a hard‐ground. The phoronid boring Talpina is present in some Liostrea shells; it was apparently excavated after the death of these oysters. The Carmel hardground community does not contain other fossils, such as serpulids, brachiopods, foraminiferans, and skeletal bryo‐zoans, typical of Jurassic hardgrounds elsewhere. It represents a low diversity molluscan community developed in a restricted marine environment.  相似文献

The high biodiversity of coral reefs is attributable to the many invertebrate groups which live in symbiotic relationships with other reef organisms, particularly those which associate with the living coral habitat. However, few studies have examined the diversity and community structure of coral-dwelling invertebrates and how they vary among coral species. This study quantified the species richness and composition of animals associated with four common species of branching corals (Acropora nasuta, A. millepora, Pocillopora damicornis, and Seriatopora hystrix) at Lizard Island in the northern Great Barrier Reef. One hundred and seventy-eight nominal species from 12 different phyla were extracted across 50 replicate colonies of each coral host. A single coral colony, approximately 20 cm in diameter, harbored as many as 73 individuals and 24 species. There were substantial differences in invertebrate species composition among coral hosts of different families as well as genera. Twenty-seven species (15% of all taxa collected) were found on only one of the four different coral species, which may potentially indicate some level of specialization among coral hosts. The distinct assemblages on different coral species, and the presence of potential specialists, suggests invertebrate communities will be sensitive to the differential loss of branching coral species resulting from coral reef degradation.  相似文献

Patterns of intraspecific variation were examined inAntennaria alborosea A. E. Porsild,A. corymbosa E. Nels,A. marginata Greene,A. microphylla Rydb.,A. parvifolia Nutt., andA. umbrinella Rydb. AlthoughA. alborosea was initially considered arctic in distribution, it became apparent that a southern montane element also exists. Our results suggest that morphological differences between arctic and southern montane specimens represent clinal variation. The additional morphological data for specimens that occur more than 1,500 km south of the species' range as it was initially described result in a better understanding of this once presumed arctic taxon. Morphological variation in the dioecious speciesA. corymbosa, A. marginata, A. microphylla, A. parvifolia, andA. umbrinella was greater between the genders than was geographic variation within each gender. These results demonstrate that both pistillate and staminate specimens must be examined in dioecious species ofAntennaria if morphological variation in the respective species is to be fully understood. Character size or number of broadly distributed species (A. microphylla andA. parvifolia) generally decreased with increasing longitude, whereas characters of species with more restricted distributions (A. alborosea, A. corymbosa, andA. marginata) generally increased in size or number with increasing latitude or longitude.Antennaria umbrinella was an exception in this respect.  相似文献

The objective of the present article is to document the first stratigraphic occurrence of the colonial oculinid Madrepora, known from the modern seas as an azooxanthellate taxon that contributes to the formation of deep-water coral reefs. The Upper Cretaceous specimens of Madrepora sp. reported herein from Poland were recovered from Upper Maastrichtian (Nasiłów and Bochotnica localities) and Lower Maastrichtian (Bliżów locality) siliceous limestones. The corals are preserved as imprints of the branch fragments and molds of the calices. Despite their moldic preservation, the coral remains exhibit key generic features of the genus Madrepora; including (1) sympodial colony growth form with calices arranged in opposite and alternating rows in one plane of the branch, and (2) imprints of the granular coenosteum texture, occasionally showing peculiar reticulate patterns. Some features of the Cretaceous Madrepora sp., such as the reticulate coenosteum texture, the range of the corallite diameter (2.8–4 mm), and the arrangement of the septa in three regular cycles resemble the skeletal features of the modern, typically constructional, species M. oculata (type species). The lack of any evidence of coral buildups and related debris in the whole Upper Cretaceous/Paleogene sequences from Poland and the sparse occurrence of colony fragments, suggests that the Cretaceous Madrepora sp. formed small, isolated colonies.  相似文献
