A molecular clock based on ITS sequence data from the lichen genera Biatora and Phyllopsora is calibrated with the help of paleoclimatic data and evidence of forest history. The clock indicates that diversification within Biatora started as early as in the Late Cretaceous and took place during periods of climatic cooling, when new types of forest evolved and spread in the Northern Hemisphere. Arctic-alpine species of the genus appear to be of considerable age, dating back to the Late Eocene-Oligocene climatic cooling. By using calibrated phylogenies of epiphytic lichens it may become possible to date many paleoenvironmental events, for which little fossil evidence exists.  相似文献

The phylogenetic relationships of the late Eocene anthropoids Catopithecus browni and Proteopithecus sylviae are currently a matter of debate, with opinion divided as to whether these taxa are stem or crown anthropoids. The phylogenetic position of Catopithecus is of particular interest, for, unlike the highly generalized genus Proteopithecus, this taxon shares apomorphic dental and postcranial features with more derived undoubted catarrhines that appear in the same region 1-2 Ma later. If these apomorphies are homologous and Catopithecus is a stem catarrhine, the unique combination of plesiomorphic and apomorphic features preserved in this anthropoid would have important implications for our understanding of the crown anthropoid morphotype and the pattern of morphological character transformations that occurred during the early phases of stem catarrhine evolution.Well-preserved astragali referrable to Proteopithecus, Catopithecus, and the undoubted early Oligocene stem catarrhine Aegyptopithecus have provided additional morphological evidence that allows us to further evaluate competing hypotheses of interrelationships among Eocene-Oligocene Afro-Arabian anthropoids. Qualitative observations and multivariate morphometric analyses reveal that the astragalar morphology of Proteopithecus is very similar to that of early Oligocene parapithecids and living and extinct small-bodied platyrrhines, and strengthens the hypothesis that the morphological pattern shared by these taxa is primitive within crown Anthropoidea. In contrast, Catopithecus departs markedly from the predicted crown anthropoid astragalar morphotype and shares a number of apomorphic features (e.g., deep cotylar fossa, laterally projecting fibular facet, trochlear asymmetry, mediolaterally wide astragalar head) with Aegyptopithecus and Miocene-Recent catarrhines. The evidence from the astragalus complements other independent data from the dentition, humerus and femur of Catopithecus that support this taxon's stem catarrhine status, and we continue to maintain that oligopithecines are stem catarrhines that constitute the sister group of a clade containing propliopithecines and Miocene-Recent catarrhines.  相似文献

In fasting Pisidium amnicum and Sphaerium corneum, regular periods of behavioural and metabolic quiescence were shown to occur in the normoxic, constant environment of the flow-through chamber of a heat-flow microcalorimeter. The metabolic rate was suppressed to 7.5% of normal at 10° C and to 8.5–9.7% at 20° C for periods exceeding the period of active metabolism by a factor of 3.5 at 10° C and 8.3 at 20° C. The rate of heat output during normoxic quiescence was equal to that during environmental anoxia, suggesting spontaneous achievement of body anoxia by complete shell closure. The mass-specific integrated heat output during closure periods was independent of size. Parallel observations on clam behaviour suggested that metabolic quiescence coincided with shell closure, and bursts of heat flow with active ventilation. Shell closure was accompanied by pronounced bradycardia, down to 20% of the active rate. In a constant environment, the rhythmic quiescence is regulated by shell closure which is probably triggered by lack of food. Regular quiescence of fasting bivalves may conserve energy reserves considerably, the amount depending on the possible excretion rate of the end products, and the post-quiescence recovery costs, which were not measured. Heat output during the active period was close to the average metabolic rate found earlier for Sphaeriidae. However, all the values determined so far are likely to be underestimates of the natural metabolism because the effects of digestion and growth are not included.  相似文献

Two genera and three species of adapid primates are known from the middle and late Miocene of India and Pakistan. Most fossil specimens are fragmentary, but the best-known species, Sivaladapis nagrii,is now represented by enough specimens to permit composite reconstruction of much of the dentition. The incisors of Sivaladapishave spatulate crowns, and the canines are large, projecting teeth. Premolars and molars exhibit complex occlusion involving simultaneous approximation of pointed leading cusps on upper and lower molars, with linear trailing lophs. The premolar eruption sequence in Sivaladapisappears to be P 2-P4-P3, as in most extant prosimians. Symphyseal fusion of the mandibular rami occurred early in ontogeny, before the eruption of any of the anterior permanent teeth. We interpret Sivaladapisto have been a specialized arboreal folivore that became extinct near the end of the Miocene, when the distribution of forests was increasingly restricted and colobine monkeys first invaded South Asia.  相似文献

Batch cultures of the toxigenic diatomNitzschia pungens Grunow f.multiseries Hasle were fed to blue mussels (Mytilus edulis) and deep sea Atlantic scallops (Placopecten magellanicus) to elucidate conditions under which domoic acid (DA) was accumulated and excreted (depurated). Mussels accumulated the toxin to a maximum level of 13 g g-1, at rates of 0.21 to 3.7 g h-1 g-1, dry weight. Accumulation efficiency (the proportion of accumulated DA to estimated net uptake) ranged from 1–5%. The highest filtration rate of 1.71 h-1 occurred at concentrations of 4–8 × 106 Nitzschia cells 1-1 with no formation of pseudofeces. Depuration rates between fed and starved mussels over a 2 h test period were the same. The depuration rate of domoic acid was about 17% d-1 and did not account for the low uptake efficiencies, so it is suggested that most of the DA is lost from mussels in the solution during the feeding process. Domoic acid accumulation in mussels was dependent on the amount of toxin available, which in turn was a function of the density and growth phase of theNitzschia population. Changes in filtration rate withNitzschia concentration and depuration rate with time can account for the DA levels of mussels collected during toxic episodes in Cardigan Bay, Prince Edward Island, Canada in 1988 and 1989.Scallops accumulated DA (0.39–1.3 g h-1 g-1, more slowly than mussels, however, accumulation efficiencies ranged from 5–100%. Filtration rates remained relatively low and constant at 0.081 h-1. Scallops retained domoic acid longer than mussels, a fact which must be considered in the marketing of whole scallops for human consumption.  相似文献

Reattachment of certain species of mytilid bivalves to various substrates   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Reattachment to various substrates (concrete, wood, and iron) was studied in three species of Mytilidae in the laboratory. Each of the investigated species exhibited substrate selectivity. The most successful substrate colonization occurred on concrete, which, owing to its physicochemical properties, proved to be more appropriate for rapid and firm anchorage of the mollusks. Mytilid response to any specific substrate, judged from the reattachment rate and substrate preference, may indirectly indicate the possibile existence of natural communities of organisms associated with a corresponding biotope.  相似文献

Here we describe a number of mostly isolated bird and non-avian dinosaur footprints from the Huangyangquan track site in the Lower Cretaceous Lower Layer of the Tugulu Group near Huangyangquan Reservoir in the Wuerhe District, Karamay, Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, China. Bird footprints at the site pertain to Koreanaornis dodsoni n. ichnosp., Goseongornipes isp., Aquatilavipes isp., and Moguiornipes robusta n. ichnogen. n. ichnosp. Moguiornipes tracks may be the products of a bird with lobed feet. These shorebird-morph tracks are the first solid evidence of birds in the Tugulu Group, and greatly enrich the known faunal diversity of the Lower Layer of the Tugulu Group. The Huangyangquan avian ichnofauna is comparable to those of the Jindong Formation, Korea and the Dakota Formation, USA. Non-avian dinosaur footprints at the site pertain to cf. Jialingpus isp., Asianopodus isp., and Kayentapus isp. This is the first report of Jialingpus from Lower Cretaceous strata. The discoveries of Asianopodus isp. and Kayentapus isp. increase the known ranges of these two ichnogenera.  相似文献

Under bleaching conditions, corals lose their symbiotic zooxanthellae, and thus, the ability to synthesize fatty acids (FAs) from photosynthetically derived carbon. This study investigated the lipid content and FA composition in healthy and bleached corals from the Odo reef flat in Okinawa, southern Japan, following a bleaching event. It was hypothesized that the FA composition and abundance would change as algae are lost or die, and possibly microbial abundance would increase in corals as a consequence of bleaching. The lipid content and FA composition of three healthy coral species (Pavona frondifera, Acropora pulchra, and Goniastrea aspera) and of partially bleached and completely bleached colonies of P. frondifera were examined. The FA composition did not differ among healthy corals, but differed significantly among healthy, partially bleached, and completely bleached specimens of P. frondifera. Completely bleached corals contained significantly lower lipid and total FA content, as well as lower relative amounts of polyunsaturated FAs and higher relative amounts of saturated FAs, than healthy and partially bleached corals. Furthermore, there was a significantly higher relative concentration of monounsaturated FAs and odd-numbered branched FAs in completely bleached corals, indicating an increase in bacterial colonization in the bleached corals.  相似文献

Crossing-experiments were made between 3 nominal species of hydrozoan medusae whose polyps are symbiotic with bivalves. Samples were collected from 17 populations at 15 Japanese localities. Eutima japonica and Eucheilota intermedia readily hybridized but crosses of either with Eugymnanthea inquilina japonica were almost always unsuccessful. Inference is drawn of close kinship between the first 2 species, and of only distant relationship between either of these and the last.  相似文献

Recent genetic work on various coral genera has shown that morphological convergence between Atlantic and Pacific corals obscures evolutionary relationships and inferred levels of endemicity between the regions. Based on DNA sequences from nuclear and mitochondrial loci that provide higher resolution than those previously presented, this study shows that relationships within parts of the Atlantic coral fauna are also in need of substantial revision. The data presented here indicate that (1) the endemic Brazilian genus Mussismilia is a monophyletic clade, (2) Mussismilia is more closely related to the Caribbean Faviidae than Mussidae, the family in which it is currently placed, (3) the Brazilian endemic coral Favia leptophylla is much more closely related to Mussismilia than other species of Favia and has most likely been incorrectly placed in the genus Favia and (4) the other endemic Favia species found in Brazil, Favia gravida, is genetically distinct from Favia fragum, a Caribbean congener with which it is frequently synonymized. The nuclear data also suggest the possible presence of a cryptic species within Mussismilia, but additional sampling and morphological information is required to confirm this finding.  相似文献

The abundance of lesions from fish bites on corals was quantified at nine shallow reefs in the main Hawaiian Islands. There were on average 117 bite scars m−2 on Pocillopora meandrina tissue from the barred filefish Cantherhines dumerilii, 69 bites m−2 on Porites compressa tissue, and 4 bites m−2 on Porites lobata tissue from the spotted puffer Arothron meleagris. Across sites, the frequency of A. meleagris bites on P. compressa per unit area of living coral cover declined exponentially with increasing coral cover. P. compressa nubbins in two size classes (1–2 cm and 4–5 cm) were transplanted onto six study reefs. Nubbins in the small size class were entirely removed by bites from A. meleagris, while nubbins ≥4 cm were only partially consumed, leaving them able to recover. At sites with abundant P. compressa, predation had little effect on transplanted nubbins; at sites where P. compressa comprised less than 5% of living cover, all nubbins were preyed upon. A. meleagris bite lesions on P. compressa were monitored through time and fully recovered in 42 ± 4 days. A model of the risk of over-predation (a second predation event before the first is healed) decreased exponentially with increasing coral cover and increased linearly with increasing lesion healing time. The increased risk of over-predation at low coral cover could indicate an Allee effect limiting the recovery of coral populations if coral cover is substantially reduced by natural or anthropogenic disturbances.  相似文献

Yubaristrobus is a new genus of the Taxodiaceae based on a permineralized seed cone from the Upper Cretaceous of Hokkaido. The type species,Y. nakajimae sp. nov., is characterized by peltate bract-scale complexes consisting of a completely-fused bract and scale. The bract-scale complexes are spirally arranged as in most taxodiaceous genera. Their vascular arrangement is specialized and unique in the Taxodiaceae and suggests a relationship with the Cupressaceae. Consecutive number from the previous paper (Ohsawa, M. Nishida and H. Nishida, 1992b).  相似文献

A subfossil fragment of the deep-sea gorgonian coral Primnoa resedaeformis was 14C AMS dated along a radial growth transect. Dates ranged from 2600±50 at the outside, to 2920±60 14C years BP near the interior, suggesting an age of <300 years. The avergae radial growth was approximately 0.044 mm.yr–1. Based on comparisons with live-collected specimens, we estimate the entire colony may have been about 0.5–0.75 m tall, with a linear tip extension rate of 1.5–2.5 mm.yr–1. Towards the centre of the main stem, the coral skeleton is composed of alternating couplets, 200 m in width, of gorgonin (a horn-like organic skeletal protein) and calcite. We believe these couplets are annual. Within this larger scale of banding are finer couplets of gorgonin and calcite, with frequencies suggesting lunar monthly periodicity. Both scales of banding may reflect fluctuations in food supply from sinking POM, or from tidally-resuspended bottom POM, along with benthic consumers. Outer skeletal growth is predominantly massive calcite with intermittent gorgonin layers. If carbonate precipitation in this zone were continuous, approximately 25 m radial growth would be deposited every year. The Scleractinian Desmophyllum cristagalli lives to <200 years, and has rates of linear extension of 0.5–1.0 mm.yr–1. The skeletons show growth bands approximately 10 m wide, which may be annual. Due to tissue extension and retraction in life, parts of the skeleton may be overgrown, or suffer dissolution. Although we have shown in previous publications that sea water temperatures may be obtained from analysis of this coral, periods of skeletal dissolution, coupled with isotopic disequilibrium, will make obtaining long climatic records extremely difficult.  相似文献

Two mandibular fragments with associated milk teeth assigned to the late Miocene hominoid primate Ouranopithecus macedoniensis are analyzed. The fossils, which belong to a single individual, were found in the Vallesian locality of "Ravin de la Pluie" of the Axios Valley (Macedonia, Greece). The material is described here and compared with extant and extinct hominoids, allowing assessment of the evolutionary trends in the deciduous lower dentition within the Hominoidea. Hylobatids represent the more primitive pattern. Gorilla is slightly more derived than hylobatids, but less derived than Pongo and Pan, the latter being the most derived. With relatively smaller deciduous canines and more molarized deciduous premolars, Ouranopithecus is more derived than both Pan and Gorilla. Among the fossil hominoids, Proconsul, representing the primitive condition, has a very simple dp(3)and a dp(4)that has a trigonid that is taller than the talonid and which lacks a hypoconulid. Griphopithecus is more derived than Proconsul in having a dp(4) with a lower trigonid, a hypoconulid, and a less oblique cristid obliqua. Australopithecus and Paranthropus possess a similar morphology to that of Homo, while Ardipithecus appears to be more primitive than the latter genera. Ouranopithecus has a more derived lower milk dentition than Proconsul and Griphopithecus, but less derived than Australopithecus and Paranthropus. The comparison of the lower milk dentition of Ouranopithecus confirms our previous conclusions suggesting that this fossil hominoid shares derived characters with Australopithecus and Homo.  相似文献

Three new ichnogenera and five new ichnospecies are described for new trace fossils of termitaria (including associated gallery systems) of subterranean termites from upper Eocene through lower Miocene rocks of northern Egypt. All but two ichnospecies (Krausichnus trompitus, ichnogen, and ichnosp. nov., and A’, altus, ichnosp. nov.) show varying degrees of affinity to nests of the extant subterranean termite species Sphaerotermes sphaerothorax (Termitidae, Macro‐termitinae).

Termitichnus qatranii (Bown, 1982) is divided into two ichnospecies, the previously named T. qatranii, and a more generalized form, T. simplicidens, ichnosp. nov. Vondrichnus obovatus, ichnogen. and ichnosp. nov., is named for simple, possibly macrotermitine nests with oblate form, and Fleaglellius pagodus, ichnogen. and ichnosp. nov., records a nest form similar to V. obovatus, but one in which successive vertical growth by chamber apposition has produced a subterranean, tower‐like structure, reminiscent of that built by extant, epigeous Cubitermes. Krausichnus trompitus, ichnogen. and ichnosp. nov., and A’, altus, ichnosp. nov., record two unique nest architectures probably produced by unknown but related species of humivorous termites. The nest architecture expressed by Krausichnus is of wholly unknown affinity and is only distantly related in form to the ichnofossils of other termite nests known from the Tertiary of Egypt.

Study of the architecture of the nests of these ancient termites reveals details important in reconstructing the phylogeny of termite nests and documents two novel blueprints for chamber expansion and society budding in what were probably primitive Macrotermi‐tinae. It also indicates that at least two constructed edifices, earlier known only as epigeous manifestations of extant termite species, were almost certainly first developed by species living underground.

The extant Macrotermitinae are a subfamily of termites originally believed to have evolved in the post‐Eocene of the Ethiopian biogeo‐graphic region. We offer fossil evidence of four distinct, possibly macrotermitine structures from upper Eocene rocks. This evidence suggests that this termite subfamily (or at least their peculiar mode of nest construction) might have evolved considerably earlier, as it is already well established and exhibits several variants by the late Eocene in Egypt.  相似文献

We have determined the 18O and 13C values of azooxanthellate (Lophelia pertusa) and zooxanthellate (Porites lutea) corals at a micrometer scale using an ion microprobe (SIMS—secondary ion mass spectrometry). In P. lutea, centers of calcification are small (10 to 15 m) and difficult to locate during measurements. In L. pertusa, they are large (50 m) and arranged in lines of centers of calcification. Our results show that centers of calcification in L. pertusa have a restricted range of variation in 18O [-2.8±0.3 (PDB)], and a larger range in 13C [14.3 to 10.9 (PDB)]. Surrounding skeletal fibers exhibit large isotopic variation both for C and O (up to 12), and 13C and 18O are positively correlated. The C and O isotopic compositions of the center of calcification deviate from this linear trend at the lightest 18O values of the surrounding fibers. Ion microprobe results on P. lutea demonstrate also a large range of variation for the 18O values (up to 10). No correlation is found with C isotopes that exhibit, in comparison with L. pertusa, a small range of variation (2). This variation of 18O at a micrometer scale is probably the result of two processes: (1) an isotopic equilibrium calcification with 1 pH unit variation in the calcification fluid as indicated by direct measurements of coelenteron pH in the coral Galaxea fascicularis (Al-Horani et al. 2003) and (2) a kinetic fractionation. The 13C apparent disequilibrium in P. lutea may be the result of mixing between metabolic CO2 (respiration) and dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) coming directly from seawater.  相似文献

The middle Miocene (15 Ma) Maboko Formation of Maboko Island and Majiwa Bluffs, southwestern Kenya, has yielded abundant fossils of the earliest known cercopithecoid monkey (Victoriapithecus macinnesi), and of a kenyapithecine hominoid (Kenyapithecus africanus), as well as rare proconsuline (Simiolus leakeyorum, cf. Limnopithecus evansi) and oreopithecine apes (Mabokopithecus clarki, M. pickfordi), and galagids (Komba winamensis). Specific habitat preferences can be interpreted from large collections of primate fossils in different kinds of paleosols (pedotypes). Fossiliferous drab-colored paleosols with iron-manganese nodules (Yom pedotype) are like modern soils of seasonally waterlogged depressions (dambo). Their crumb structure and abundant fine root-traces, as well as scattered large calcareous rhizoconcretions indicate former vegetation of seasonally wet, wooded grassland. Other fossiliferous paleosols are evidence of nyika bushland (Ratong), and early-successional riparian woodland (Dhero). No fossils were found in Mogo paleosols interpreted as saline scrub soils. Very shallow calcic horizons (in Yom, Ratong, and Mogo paleosols) and Na-montmorillonite (in Mogo) are evidence of dry paleoclimate (300-500 mm MAP=mean annual precipitation). This is the driest paleoclimate and most open vegetation yet inferred as a habitat for any Kenyan Miocene apes or monkeys. Victoriapithecus was abundant in dambo wooded grassland (Yom) and riparian woodland (Dhero), a distribution like that of modern vervet monkeys. Kenyapithecus ranged through all these paleosols, but was the most common primate in nyika bushland paleosols (Ratong), comparable to baboons and macaques today. Mabokopithecus was virtually restricted to riparian woodland paleosols (Dhero), and Simiolus had a similar, but marginally wider, distribution. Habitat preferences of Mabokopithecus and Simiolus were like those of modern colobus monkeys and mangabeys. A single specimen of Komba was found in dambo wooded grassland paleosol (Yom), a habitat more like that of the living Senegal bushbaby than of rainforest galagids. A shift to non-forest habitats may explain the terrestrial adaptations of Victoriapithecus, basal to the cercopithecid radiation, and of Kenyapithecus, basal to the hominoid radiation. Both taxa are distinct from earlier Miocene arboreal proconsulines, oreopithecines and galagids.  相似文献

Thirty-three percent (228/682) of all long terminal repeat (LTR) retrotransposon sequences (LRSs) present in the sequenced Drosophila melanogaster genome were found to be located in or within 1000 bp of a gene. Recently inserted LTR retrotransposons are significantly more likely to be located in or within genes than are older, fragmented LTR retrotransposon sequences, indicating that most LRS-gene associations are selected against over evolutionary time. LRSs associated with conserved genes (homologenes) are especially prone to negative selection. In contrast, fragmented LRSs that have persisted in the genome over long spans of evolutionary time are preferentially associated with genes involved in signal transduction and other newly evolved functions.
