The dynamics of vegetation in the North Iberian Peninsula have been historically established from peaty and lacustrine records obtained in strongly continental mountainous areas. Pollen records located in areas with a more oceanic climate, have allowed a more precise evaluation of the changes and differences in the vegetation development of the various biogeographical areas in the North Iberian Peninsula, during the Late-glacial and Holocene. It was found that: (1) The vegetation of the Cantabrian–Atlantic province in northern Iberian Peninsula responded to climatic changes during the last 16000 years. (2) Tree vegetation declined during the Oldest Dryas, with steppe vegetation in the interior and cryophilous vegetation along the coast. (3) During the time of the Lateglacial Interestadial, lowlands, arboreal vegetation was dominant in the landscape (Pinus, Betula, Quercus, Corylus). (4) During the Younger Dryas the differences between coast and interior are less obvious. (5) During the Holocene oceanic decidious forests of Quercus robur, Corylus avellana, Tilia sp. and Fagus sylvatica were present along the coast. At low altitudes, in the interior, forests of Quercus robur / pyrenaica, enclaves of pine woods and Mediterranean types of forest (Quercus ilex, Olea europea) were present. At higher altitudes Pinus (P. sylvestris and P. uncinata) or mixed forests of Pinus and Betula were dominant.  相似文献

Abstract The annual litterfall and decomposition rate of litter in three semi-arid vegetation communities (forest, mallee and broom) in the Pilliga State Forests, New South Wales, Australia, were measured over a period of 3 years. Annual litterfall was found to vary widely between the communities, ranging from 1005 to 3409 kg ha?1 year?1. Decomposition rates were measured and the half lives obtained ranged from 2. 5 to 5. 3 years. In many forests fire removes much of the accumulated litter at regular intervals. Two of the three study sites (the forest and mallee) had reached steady state after 36 years of litter accumulation after fire, while the broom, with only 20 years accumulation, was not in steady state. Between fires decomposition of the liner dominates. In the mallee soil fauna were most active, burying the litter under mineral soil before comminution commenced, demonstrating a cycling of litter which differs markedly from that in more humid climates.  相似文献

Key questions for understanding the resilience and variability of Mexican Neotropical cloud forest assemblages in current and future climate change include: How have human disturbances and climate change affected the dynamics of the cloud forest assemblage? What are the predominant processes responsible for its present day composition and distribution? Are the current conservation strategies for the cloud forest in accordance with preserving its natural variability through time? In this study, the temporal dynamics of the cloud forest in west‐central Mexico over the last ~1300 years were reconstructed using palaeoecological techniques. These included analyses of fossil pollen, microfossil charcoal, and sediment geochemistry. Results indicated that a cloud forest assemblage has been the predominant vegetation type in this region over the last ~1300 years. During this time, however, there have been changes in the vegetation with an apparent expansion of cloud forest from ~832 to 620 cal years bp and a decline from 1200 to 832 cal years bp . Climate change (intervals of aridity) and human disturbances through anthropogenic burning appear to have been the main factors influencing the dynamics of this cloud forest. The spatial heterogeneity reported for high‐altitude forests in this region, in concert with high beta diversity, appears to be a manifestation of the high temporal variability in species composition for these forests. Greater turnover in cloud forest taxa occurred during intervals of increased humidity and is probably representative of a higher temporal competition for resources among the cloud forest taxa. The present results support the current protection scheme for cloud forests in west‐central Mexico where areas are kept in exclusion zones to avoid timber extraction, grazing, and agriculture; this will maintain diversity within these forests, even if there are only a few individuals per species, and enable the forests to retain some resilience to current and future climate change.  相似文献

Aim The assumedly anomalous occurrence of savannas and forest–savanna mosaics in the Gran Sabana – a neotropical region under a climate more suitable for tropical rain forests – has been attributed to a variety of historical, climatic, and anthropogenic factors. This paper describes a previously undocumented shift in vegetation and climate that occurred during the early Holocene, and evaluates its significance for the understanding of the origin of the Gran Sabana vegetation. Location A treeless savanna locality of the Gran Sabana (4°30′–6°45′ N and 60°34′–62°50′ W), in the Venezuelan Guayana of northern South America, at the headwaters of the Caroní river, one of the major tributaries of the Orinoco river. Methods Pollen and charcoal analysis of a previously dated peat section spanning from about the Pleistocene/Holocene boundary until the present. Results Mesothermic cloud forests dominated by Catostemma (Bombacaceae) occupied the site around the Pleistocene/Holocene boundary. During the early Holocene, a progressive but relatively rapid trend towards savanna vegetation occurred, and eventually the former cloud forests were replaced by a treeless savanna. Some time after the establishment of savannas, a marked increase in charcoal particles indicates the occurrence of the first local fires. Main conclusions The occurrence of cloud forests at the Pleistocene/Holocene boundary contradicts the historical hypothesis according to which the Gran Sabana is a relict of the hypothetical widespread savannas that have been assumed to have dominated the region during the last glaciation. The first local fires recorded in the Holocene were on savanna vegetation, which is against the hypothesis of fire as the triggering factor for the establishment of these savannas. Climate change, in the form of global warming and a persistently drier climate, emerges as the most probable cause for the forest–savanna turnover.  相似文献

Neotropical seasonally dry forests and Quaternary vegetation changes   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
Seasonally dry tropical forests have been largely ignored in discussions of vegetation changes during the Quaternary. We distinguish dry forests, which are essentially tree‐dominated ecosystems, from open savannas that have a xeromorphic fire‐tolerant, grass layer and grow on dystrophic, acid soils. Seasonally dry tropical forests grow on fertile soils, usually have a closed canopy, have woody floras dominated by the Leguminosae and Bignoniaceae and a sparse ground flora with few grasses. They occur in disjunct areas throughout the Neotropics. The Chaco forests of central South America experience regular annual frosts, and are considered a subtropical extension of temperate vegetation formations. At least 104 plant species from a wide range of families are each found in two or more of the isolated areas of seasonally dry tropical forest scattered across the Neotropics, and these repeated patterns of distribution suggest a more widespread expanse of this vegetation, presumably in drier and cooler periods of the Pleistocene. We propose a new vegetation model for some areas of the Ice‐Age Amazon: a type of seasonally dry tropical forest, with rain forest and montane taxa largely confined to gallery forest. This model is consistent with the distributions of contemporary seasonally dry tropical forest species in Amazonia and existing palynological data. The hypothesis of vicariance of a wider historical area of seasonally dry tropical forests could be tested using a cladistic biogeographic approach focusing on plant genera that have species showing high levels of endemicity in the different areas of these forests.  相似文献

Bird communities in southeastern New South Wales, as determined by classification and ordination techniques, were seldom discrete. The most cohesive assemblage was associated with wet sclerophyll and rainforest habitats. These moist forests also supported the richest avifaunas and had high population densities. Although most birds occurred throughout the region, most species were uncommon. Of the 116 species recorded, 51 (44%) were found on fewer than 10% of the 143 plots censused. Only 19 species occurred on more than half the plots, with six of these recorded on more than 90% of the plots. Other than a small group of birds primarily restricted to moist forest, only the most common and widely distributed species regularly occurred together. Species were grouped with habitats on an elevational gradient from coastal forests to the tablelands. Within this elevational range, species were associated with major structural features of the vegetation. In terms of bird assemblages, open habitats were distinguished from those with dense vegetation. Plots which had been recently logged were separated from mature forest. The results indicate that plans for wildlife management should consider both the assemblages of species which are associated with major forest habitats and the requirements of individual species.  相似文献

East African coastal forests possess considerable botanical importance as an area of high plant endemicity, but are little known ecologically. Quantitative botanical sampling techniques have been used to determine vegetation communities in Pande and Kiono coastal forests, Tanzania. Data from 76 quadrats established in six transects (three in each forest) and containing a total of 146 plant species have been classified using TWINSPAN. Seven species-associations and four sample-associations are recognised. Undisturbed forest supports six species-associations which are rich in plant species of restricted distribution, and these differ between the sites studied. Forest heavily disturbed by man supports one species-association composed of more generalist forest species and this association is similar between sites. Variation in vegetation types of undisturbed forests appears to be caused by edaphic conditions, rainfall and degree of exposure. Variation in the vegetation of disturbed forests appears to be controlled by the intensity of forest disturbance. Heavy human disturbance of coastal forests reduces their biodiversity values as plant-diversity and the habitats of rare plant species are lost.  相似文献

Many paddy fields in the mountainous rural areas of Japan have been abandoned since the 1960s, and forests have regenerated on these sites. In a mountainous area on Sado Island, a large number of abandoned paddies were converted into wetlands and open terrestrial vegetation. In this study, we used pitfall traps to examine the effects of the creation of open vegetation on carabid beetle assemblages by investigating 14 sites spanning five vegetation types: six sites in secondary forests (three coppice forests and three 40‐year‐old regenerating forests on abandoned paddies), three each in clear‐cuts and paddy levees, and two in grasslands. The 14 study sites were clearly separated into two groups different in the species composition of carabid beetles: secondary forest and grassland‐levee groups. The species composition of two clear‐cut sites was similar to that of secondary forests, whereas that of the remaining one clear‐cut site was similar to that of grasslands. Analyses of species responses showed various habitat preferences, e.g., for only coppice forests, for two types of secondary forests, for secondary forests and clear‐cuts, for clear‐cuts and grasslands, and for grasslands or levees, or no clear preference. There were no characteristic species in the regenerating forests. These results suggest that the 40‐year‐old regenerating forests may sustain only a limited subset of the carabid fauna found in coppice forests and that the creation of open vegetation in the abandoned paddies enhances carabid diversity at the landscape level by raising β diversity among the different vegetation types.  相似文献

We reconstructed the vegetational landscape of the pre-industrial era (the beginning of the twentieth century) in north-eastern Japan, and estimated the distribution patterns of traditional land-uses, as suggested from the vegetation. We found significant correspondence between the spatial patterns of vegetational landscape and site attributes, and hypothesized the underlying mechanisms. The study area was classified into three vegetation types: grasslands, secondary forests and old-growth forests. It was determined that the grasslands were formed and maintained by burning; secondary forests were derived from either charcoal woods or forests recovered on abandoned grasslands; and old-growth forests had suffered the least anthropogenic disturbance. Each past vegetation type showed significant dependency on site attributes such as altitude, slope angle, slope aspect, hydrological topography and distance from the nearest human habitation. The relative importance of these site attributes varied depending on the vegetation type. Grasslands and old-growth forests, which were the most and the least disturbed sites in the study area, respectively, showed clear contrasts in their dependencies especially on the slope aspect and on elevation. These site attributes were thought to have had influences on each vegetation type by determining the inflammability of the site. Satellite photographs indicated that north-facing valleys had been relatively wet throughout the fire-prone spring season. Hence, these areas would have been free from frequent fire, and more likely to preserve old-growth forests. Ground wetness in spring was thought to be the underlying factor determining the contrasts in past vegetation and land-use patterns in the area.An erratum to this article can be found at  相似文献

Savannahs are a mixture of trees and grasses often occurring as alternate states to closed forests. Savannah fires are frequent where grass productivity is high in the wet season. Fires help maintain grassy vegetation where the climate is suitable for woodlands or forests. Saplings in savannahs are particularly vulnerable to topkill of above-ground biomass. Larger trees are more fire-resistant and suffer little damage when burnt. Recruitment to large mature tree size classes depends on sapling growth rates to fire-resistant sizes and the time between fires. Carbon dioxide (CO(2)) can influence the growth rate of juvenile plants, thereby affecting tree recruitment and the conversion of open savannahs to woodlands. Trees have increased in many savannahs throughout the world, whereas some humid savannahs are being invaded by forests. CO(2) has been implicated in this woody increase but attribution to global drivers has been controversial where changes in grazing and fire have also occurred. We report on diverse tests of the magnitude of CO(2) effects on both ancient and modern ecosystems with a particular focus on African savannahs. Large increases in trees of mesic savannahs in the region cannot easily be explained by land use change but are consistent with experimental and simulation studies of CO(2) effects. Changes in arid savannahs seem less obviously linked to CO(2) effects and may be driven more by overgrazing. Large-scale shifts in the tree-grass balance in the past and the future need to be better understood. They not only have major impacts on the ecology of grassy ecosystems but also on Earth-atmosphere linkages and the global carbon cycle in ways that are still being discovered.  相似文献

Abandonment of coppicing is one of the main reasons of diversity decline in European temperate forests. To reverse this trend, coppicing has been reintroduced in several forests, especially in areas of high conservation value. However, empirical information on the effects of coppicing on plant diversity and composition is still scarce. By comparing vegetation data from active coppices and beech-dominated high forests in the Banat region in Romania, we tested the hypothesis that coppices have a higher plant diversity and different plant species composition than high forests. Data were collected in 60 randomly placed phytosociological relevés and were analysed using linear models and multivariate methods. As expected, we found differences in understorey plant composition. Herb species with various environmental demands–sciophytes-(hemi)-heliophytes and grassland species–were more frequent in coppices whereas high forests had more vernal species and sciophytes. Coppices also had slightly greater plant diversity but did not differ in herb species richness. Our results demonstrate that coppicing has a small positive effect on plant diversity but a large effect on species composition. Coppice restoration may be especially beneficial for populations of thermophilous and non-forest species.  相似文献

Coastal vegetation has been widely recognized as a natural method to reduce the energy of tsunami waves. However, a vegetation barrier cannot completely stop a tsunami, and its effectiveness depends on the magnitude of the tsunami as well as the structure of the vegetation. For coastal rehabilitation, optimal planning of natural coastal systems, and their maintenance, we need to quantitatively elucidate the capacity of vegetation to reduce the energy of tsunami waves. The limitations of coastal forests in relation to the magnitude of a tsunami and the maintenance of forests as natural disaster buffer zones have to be understood correctly for effective coastal vegetation planning. Demerits of coastal forests have also been revealed: for example, an open gap in a forest (i.e., a road, river, difference in elevation, etc.) can channel and amplify a strong current by forcing it into the gap. Floating debris from broken trees also can damage surrounding buildings and hurt people. However, many studies have revealed that these demerits can be overcome with proper planning and management of mangroves and coastal forests, and that coastal vegetation has a significant potential to mitigate damage in constructed areas and save human lives by acting as buffer zones during extreme natural events. However, mangrove forests have been damaged by anthropogenic activities (i.e., tourism, shrimp farming, and industrial development), making coastal areas increasingly vulnerable to tsunamis and other natural disasters. The effectiveness of vegetation also changes with the age and structure of the forest. This highlights the fact that proper planning and management of vegetation are required to maintain the tsunami buffering function of coastal forests. Although many government and nongovernmental organizations have implemented coastal vegetation projects, many of them have been unsuccessful due to a lack of proper maintenance. A pilot project in Matara City, Sri Lanka, revealed that participation and support from local authorities and communities is essential to make the planting projects successful. An integrated coastal vegetation management system that includes utilization of the materials produced by the forest and a community participation and awareness program are proposed to achieve a sustainable and long-lasting vegetation bioshield.  相似文献

The paper presents the results of pollen and macroscopic analyses of three peat deposits in the surroundings of Le?tina (near Světlá nad Sázavou) on the western slopes of Bohemian-Moravian Uplands. On the basis of the results obtained, a reconstruction of forest covers was made and the representation of various woody plants in the forests from the Sub-boreal period to the present was evaluated. Beech-fir forests were found to have prevailed in the area before the beginning of colonization, andPicea excelsa is shown to have originally occurred at 450–500 m altitudo. The results of macroscopic analyses were used for the reconstruction of the vegetation of peat deposits. The findings of historical investigations of the forests were taken into consideration and the conclusions of geobotanical reconstruction mapping were compared with the results obtained.  相似文献

The effect of major disturbances on the structure of pine forests in the interfluve of the Chernaya and Pugai rivers has been retrospectively analyzed back to the late 19th century. The results show that intensive timber harvesting and fires produced a synergistic effect so that the natural fire regime in these forests has changed; in particular, the severity of fires and the frequency of stand-replacement fires have increased. The ecosystem of lowland pine forests, adapted to periodic fires, largely loses its resilience to fire disturbance if the age structure of pine populations becomes relatively homogeneous and communities at early succession stages gain significant prevalence in the vegetation. The main cause of the largest fire that occurred in pine forests of the Nizhni Novgorod Transvolga region (Nizhegorodskoe Zavolzhie) in 1972 was human activity rather than natural and climatic features of this territory.  相似文献

Flammability dynamics in the Australian Alps   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1       下载免费PDF全文
Forests of the Australian Alps (SE Australia) are considered some of the most vulnerable to climate change in the country, with ecosystem collapse considered likely for some due to frequent fire. It is not yet known, however, whether increasing fire frequency may stabilize due to reductions in flammability related to reduced time for fuel accumulation, show no trend, or increase due to positive feedbacks related to vegetation changes. To determine what these trends have been historically, dynamics were measured for 58 years of mapped fire history. The 1.4 million ha forested area was divided into broad formations based on structure and dominant canopy trees, and dynamics were measured for each using flammability ratio, a modification of probability of ignition at a point. Crown fire likelihood was measured for each formation, based on satellite‐derived measurements of the 2003 fire effects across a large part of the area. Contrary to popular perception but consistent with mechanistic expectations, all forests exhibited pronounced positive feedbacks. The strongest response was observed in tall, wet forests dominated by Ash‐type eucalypts, where, despite a short period of low flammability following fire, post‐disturbance stands have been more than eight times as likely to burn than have mature stands. The weakest feedbacks occurred in open forest, although post‐disturbance forests were still 1.5 times as likely to burn as mature forests. Apart from low, dry open woodland where there was insufficient data to detect a trend, all forests were most likely to experience crown fire during their period of regeneration. The implications of this are significant for the Alps, as increasing fire frequency has the potential to accelerate by producing an increasingly flammable landscape. These effects may be semi‐permanent in tall, wet forest, where frequent fire promotes ecosystem collapse into either the more flammable open forest formation, or to heathland.  相似文献

The insects were investigated in Zhifanggou watershed, Ansai County, Shaanxi Province, China. The results showed that the insect species varied spatially in the following order: the natural bush forests, the mixed forests and the simple forests. The individual number of insects in Caragana korshinskii was the highest, followed by mixed forests and Hippaphae rhamnoides, and the change range of the insect individuals in the natural bush forests was the smallest. The species number of insects with seasonal changes and the individual number of insects in various types of vegetation can be described by the Univariate cubic equation. The order of the diversity index of the insect communities in various types of vegetation from May to September was the natural bush forests, the mixed forests and the simple forests. The change ranges of the evenness values of the simple forests and the mixed forests were higher, and that of the natural bush forests was smaller. The reverse trend was assumed between the dominance values and the evenness values in the time course. Moreover, the main factors and temporal patterns of the insect communities in the natural bush forests were more complicated, fluctuative and obvious than those in the mixed forests and the simple forests by using the principal component analysis.  相似文献

Species-rich tropical forests once occurred along much of China’s southern border, from southeastern Xizang (Tibet) and southern Yunnan to southwestern Guangxi, southern Taiwan and Hainan, mainly south of 22°30’N latitude. These Chinese forests are similar to Southeast Asian lowland tropical forests in their profiles and physiognomic characteristics, floristic composition and species richness. Studies of these southern forests in China are reviewed. Complete vegetation studies on the physiognomy and floristic composition have been done in southern Yunnan, Hainan and southwestern Guangxi. Forest fragmentation, dispersal patterns of trees, and the maintenance, population dynamics, phylogenetic community structure, tree functionality and phylogenetic diversity and conservation of these tropical Chinese forests have also been studied. Major changes in land use in China have resulted in an increase in rubber and Eucalyptus plantations and a decrease in the extent of southern forests. The direct results have been fragmentation and loss of biodiversity. The underplanting of economic crops in native forests also threatens to destroy saplings and seedlings, causing the forest to lose its regenerative capacity. Limiting further expansion of monoculture tree plantations, restricting underplanting, and promoting multi-species agroforestry systems are needed in China to conserve the biodiversity of its forests.  相似文献

We studied the vegetation of the aquatic ecosystems ofLake Mikri Prespa. The lacustrine vegetationcomprises three distinct forms: floating plants, benthic hydrophytes and helophytes, which aredescribed and classified from the phytosociologicalpoint of view, as follows: (a) the vegetation of thefloating plants belong to the Lemnetea class and isrepresented by two plant communities; (b) thevegetation of the benthic hydrophytes, belongs to thePotametea class consisting of two differentcategories, namely the submersed formations and theemergent formations of the hydrophytes. Various plantcommunities were recognised in this type of vegetationand three among them are considered as the mostrepresentative; (c) the vegetation of helophytes, theprevailing life form in this wetland, belongs to thePhragmitetea class and is represented mainly by sevenwell organised plant communities. The respectivevegetation of two of the five more important wetlandsites is described. The terrestrial vegetation is composed of forestand meadow vegetation. The forest vegetation of theNational Park belongs to the class Querco-Fagetea andshows the following zonation: (a) in the vicinity ofthe lake, at the elevation of 860–1000 m, twoassociations have been found: the mixed deciduous andevergreen forests of Ostryo-Carpinion orientalis andthe evergreen forests of Ostryo-Carpinion adriaticum;(b) the deciduous oak forests surround the previouszone at the altitude of 900–1300 m with two principalassociations, namely the Quercetum frainetto and theQuercetum petraeae; (c) in the upper forest layerbetween 1200–1800 m asl, dominate beech forests of theassociation Fagion moesiacum and the less extensiveoccurrence of the mixed beech-fir stands (Ass.Abieti-Fagetum moesiacum). The zone above the tree limit is distinguished by itssubalpine character semi-shrub vegetation extendinghigher than the forest (1800–2000 m), whereas alpine meadowscover the vegetation at higheraltitudes. On the plains and in the forest clearingsexist herbaceous meadow formations of variablestructure, in parallel with the vegetation of specifichabitats, such as nitrophilous and ammophilousplants.  相似文献
