The feasibility of thermophilic (55 °C) anaerobic treatment applied to colour removal of a triazine contained reactive azo dye was investigated in two 0.53 l expanded granular sludge blanket (EGSB) reactors in parallel at a hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 10 h. Generally, this group of azo dyes shows the lowest decolourisation rates during mesophilic anaerobic treatment. The impact of the redox mediator addition on colour removal rates was also evaluated. Reactive Red 2 (RR2) and anthraquinone-2,6-disulfonate (AQDS) were selected as model compounds for azo dye and redox mediator, respectively. The reactors achieved excellent colour removal efficiencies with a high stability, even when high loading rates of RR2 were applied (2.7 g RR2 l−1 per day). Although AQDS addition at catalytic concentrations improved the decolourisation rates, the impact of AQDS on colour removal was less apparent than expected. Results show that the AQDS-free reactor R2 achieved excellent colour removal rates with efficiencies around 91%, compared with the efficiencies around 95% for the AQDS-supplied reactor R1. Batch experiments confirmed that the decolourisation rates were co-substrate dependent, in which the volatile fatty acids (VFA) mixture was the least efficient co-substrate. The highest decolourisation rate was achieved in the presence of either hydrogen or formate, although the presence of glucose had a significant impact on the colour removal rates.  相似文献

In order to understand the fate of PCP in upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor (UASB) more completely, the sorption and biodegradation of pentachlorophenol (PCP) by anaerobic sludge granules were investigated. The anaerobic granular sludge degrading PCP was formed in UASB reactor, which was seeded with anaerobic sludge acclimated by chlorophenols. At the hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 20–22 h, and PCP loading rate of 200–220 mg l−1 d−1, UASB reactor exhibited good performance in treating wastewater which containing 170–180 mg l−1 PCP and the PCP removal rate of 99.5% was achieved. Sequential appearance of tetra-, tri-, di-, and mono-chlorophenol was observed in the reactor effluent after 20 mg l−1 PCP introduction. Sorption and desorption of PCP on the anaerobic sludge granules were all fitted to the Freundlich isotherm equation. Sorption of PCP was partly irreversible. The Freundlich equation could describe the behavior of PCP amount sorbed by granular sludge in anaerobic reactor reasonably well. The results demonstrated that the main mechanism leading to removal of PCP on anaerobic granular sludge was biodegradation, not sorption or volatization.  相似文献

The experiment was conducted to evaluate the performance of an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) with granules for H(2) production from a sucrose-rich synthetic wastewater at various substrate concentrations (5.33-28.07 g-COD/L) and hydraulic retention times (HRTs) (3-30 h) for over 3 years. The kinetics of H(2) production was evaluated, and the sludge yield and endogenous decay coefficient of the H(2)-producing granules were estimated to be 0.334 g-VSS/g-COD and 0.004/h, respectively. Based on Gibbs free energy calculations, the formation thermodynamics of caproate, an important aqueous product, were analyzed. Experimental results show that the H(2) partial pressure in biogas decreased with increasing substrate concentration, but was not sensitive to the variation of HRT in a range of 6-22 h. The H(2) production rate increased with increasing substrate concentration, but decreased with increasing HRT. The H(2) yield was in the range of 0.49-1.44 mol-H(2)/mol-glucose. Acetate, butyrate, caporate, and ethanol were the main aqueous products in the reactor, and their concentrations were dependent on both substrate concentration and HRT. An elevated substrate concentration resulted in a shift of fermentation from butyrate- to caporate-type in the reactor and the formation of caproate was dependent on the H(2) partial pressure. The 3-year experimental results demonstrate that H(2) could be produced continuously and stably from the acidogenic-granule-based UASB reactor.  相似文献

Image analysis techniques were developed and applied to quantify the process of anaerobic granulation in an expanded granular sludge blanket reactor (EGSB) fed with a synthetic substrate based on glucose [60-30% COD (chemical oxygen demand)] and volatile fatty acids (40-70% COD) over 376 days. In a first operation period that lasted 177 days, the aggregation of dispersed sludge was quantitatively monitored through the recognition and quantification of aggregates and filaments. A parameter defined as the ratio between the filaments' length and the aggregates projected area (LfA) has proven to be sensitive to detect changes in the aggregation status of the anaerobic sludge. The aggregation time-defined as the moment when a balance between filaments' length and aggregates' size was established-was recognized through the LfA. The percentage of projected area of aggregates within three size ranges (0.01-0.1 mm, 0.1-1 mm, and >1 mm, equivalent diameter) reflected the granular size spectrum during the aggregation process. When sudden increases on the upflow velocity and on the organic loading rate were applied to the previously formed granules, the developed image analysis techniques revealed to be good indicators of granular sludge stability, since they were sensitive to detected filaments release, fragmentation, and erosion that usually leads to washout. The specific methanogenic activities in the presence of acetate, propionate, butyrate, and H(2)/CO(2) increased along the operation, particularly relevant was the sudden increase in the specific hydrogenophilic activity, immediately after the moment recognized as aggregation time.  相似文献
