We investigated whether personally familiar faces are preferentially processed in conditions of reduced attentional resources and in the absence of conscious awareness. In the first experiment, we used Rapid Serial Visual Presentation (RSVP) to test the susceptibility of familiar faces and faces of strangers to the attentional blink. In the second experiment, we used continuous flash interocular suppression to render stimuli invisible and measured face detection time for personally familiar faces as compared to faces of strangers. In both experiments we found an advantage for detection of personally familiar faces as compared to faces of strangers. Our data suggest that the identity of faces is processed with reduced attentional resources and even in the absence of awareness. Our results show that this facilitated processing of familiar faces cannot be attributed to detection of low-level visual features and that a learned unique configuration of facial features can influence preconscious perceptual processing.  相似文献

Adaptation-related aftereffects (AEs) show how face perception can be altered by recent perceptual experiences. Along with contrastive behavioural biases, modulations of the early event-related potentials (ERPs) were typically reported on categorical levels. Nevertheless, the role of the adaptor stimulus per se for face identity-specific AEs is not completely understood and was therefore investigated in the present study. Participants were adapted to faces (S1s) varying systematically on a morphing continuum between pairs of famous identities (identities A and B), or to Fourier phase-randomized faces, and had to match the subsequently presented ambiguous faces (S2s; 50/50% identity A/B) to one of the respective original faces. We found that S1s identical with or near to the original identities led to strong contrastive biases with more identity B responses following A adaptation and vice versa. In addition, the closer S1s were to the 50/50% S2 on the morphing continuum, the smaller the magnitude of the AE was. The relation between S1s and AE was, however, not linear. Additionally, stronger AEs were accompanied by faster reaction times. Analyses of the simultaneously recorded ERPs revealed categorical adaptation effects starting at 100 ms post-stimulus onset, that were most pronounced at around 125–240 ms for occipito-temporal sites over both hemispheres. S1-specific amplitude modulations were found at around 300–400 ms. Response-specific analyses of ERPs showed reduced voltages starting at around 125 ms when the S1 biased perception in a contrastive way as compared to when it did not. Our results suggest that face identity AEs do not only depend on physical differences between S1 and S2, but also on perceptual factors, such as the ambiguity of S1. Furthermore, short-term plasticity of face identity processing might work in parallel to object-category processing, and is reflected in the first 400 ms of the ERP.  相似文献

Empirical studies on the development of face processing skills with age show inconsistent patterns concerning qualitative vs. quantitative changes over time or the age range for peak cognitive performance. In the present study, we tested the proficiency in face detection and face categorization with a large sample of participants (N = 312; age range: 2-88 yrs). As test objects, we used so-called Mooney faces, two-tone (black and white) images of faces lacking critical information of a local, featural and relational nature, reflecting difficult real world face processing conditions. We found that performance in the assessment of gender and age from Mooney faces increases up to about age 15, and decreases from 65 years on. The implications of these findings are discussed in the light of classic and recent findings from face development literature.  相似文献

Background

Although tuberculosis is transmitted by the airborne route, direct information on the natural output of bacilli into air by source cases is very limited. We sought to address this through sampling of expelled aerosols in face masks that were subsequently analyzed for mycobacterial contamination.

Methods

In series 1, 17 smear microscopy positive patients wore standard surgical face masks once or twice for periods between 10 minutes and 5 hours; mycobacterial contamination was detected using a bacteriophage assay. In series 2, 19 patients with suspected tuberculosis were studied in Leicester UK and 10 patients with at least one positive smear were studied in The Gambia. These subjects wore one FFP30 mask modified to contain a gelatin filter for one hour; this was subsequently analyzed by the Xpert MTB/RIF system.

Results

In series 1, the bacteriophage assay detected live mycobacteria in 11/17 patients with wearing times between 10 and 120 minutes. Variation was seen in mask positivity and the level of contamination detected in multiple samples from the same patient. Two patients had non-tuberculous mycobacterial infections. In series 2, 13/20 patients with pulmonary tuberculosis produced positive masks and 0/9 patients with extrapulmonary or non-tuberculous diagnoses were mask positive. Overall, 65% of patients with confirmed pulmonary mycobacterial infection gave positive masks and this included 3/6 patients who received diagnostic bronchoalveolar lavages.

Conclusion

Mask sampling provides a simple means of assessing mycobacterial output in non-sputum expectorant. The approach shows potential for application to the study of airborne transmission and to diagnosis.  相似文献

Myofilament length-dependent activation is a universal property of striated muscle, yet the molecular mechanisms that underlie this phenomenon are incompletely understood. Additionally, the rate by which sarcomere length (SL) is sensed and then transduced to form length-dependent activation is unknown. Here, using isolated guinea-pig myocardium, we employed a rapid solution-switch single myofibril technique that allows for the study of contractile action/relaxation dynamics in the virtual absence of diffusion delays. We compared contraction kinetics obtained at submaximal activation at steady-state SL with contractions observed after rapid SL ramps to that same SL just before activation. Neither the activation and relaxation kinetics nor the final submaximal force development differed significantly between the two contraction modes for SL ramps as fast as 5 ms. We conclude that the transduction of the length signal by the cardiac sarcomere to modulate thin filament activation levels occurs virtually instantaneously, possibly resulting from structural rearrangements of the contractile proteins.  相似文献

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a heterogeneous neurodevelopmental condition clinically characterized by social interaction and communication difficulties. To date, the majority of research efforts have focused on brain mechanisms underlying the deficits in interpersonal social cognition associated with ASD. Recent empirical and theoretical work has begun to reveal evidence for a reduced or even absent self-preference effect in patients with ASD. One may hypothesize that this is related to the impaired attentional processing of self-referential stimuli. The aim of our study was to test this hypothesis. We investigated the neural correlates of face and name detection in ASD. Four categories of face/name stimuli were used: own, close-other, famous, and unknown. Event-related potentials were recorded from 62 electrodes in 23 subjects with ASD and 23 matched control subjects. P100, N170, and P300 components were analyzed. The control group clearly showed a significant self-preference effect: higher P300 amplitude to the presentation of own face and own name than to the close-other, famous, and unknown categories, indicating preferential attentional engagement in processing of self-related information. In contrast, detection of both own and close-other''s face and name in the ASD group was associated with enhanced P300, suggesting similar attention allocation for self and close-other related information. These findings suggest that attention allocation in the ASD group is modulated by the personal significance factor, and that the self-preference effect is absent if self is compared to close-other. These effects are similar for physical and non-physical aspects of the autistic self. In addition, lateralization of face and name processing is attenuated in ASD, suggesting atypical brain organization.  相似文献

为了在生长发育前期简便快速地区分棉花雄性不育A、B两用系的不育株和可育株,采用同工酶分析方法,对POD同工酶进行研究。结果表明,不同器官之间POD同工酶带数及其带的强度存在差异,其中花药的酶带最多、带的强度最高;子房的酶带最少,带的强度最低。同一器官不同发育时期POD同工酶也存在差异,其中在花药发育时期POD同工酶带数及其带的强度差异明显,尤其在单核期和二核期两种不同叶型的两用系A比B分别减少1或2条带。因此,在开花之前根据花药POD同工酶的差异,易于区分A、B两用系中的不育株和可育株。  相似文献

Endothelium-derived nitric oxide (NO) produced from endothelial NO-synthase (eNOS) is one of the most important vasoprotective molecules in cardiovascular physiology. Dysfunctional eNOS such as uncoupling of eNOS leads to decrease in NO bioavailability and increase in superoxide anion (O2.−) production, and in turn promotes cardiovascular diseases. Therefore, appropriate measurement of NO and O2.− levels in the endothelial cells are pivotal for research on cardiovascular diseases and complications. Because of the extremely labile nature of NO and O2.−, it is difficult to measure NO and O2.− directly in a blood vessel. Numerous methods have been developed to measure NO and O2.− production. It is, however, either insensitive, or non-specific, or technically demanding and requires special equipment. Here we describe an adaption of the fluorescence dye method for en face simultaneous detection and visualization of intracellular NO and O2.− using the cell permeable diaminofluorescein-2 diacetate (DAF-2DA) and dihydroethidium (DHE), respectively, in intact aortas of an obesity mouse model induced by high-fat-diet feeding. We could demonstrate decreased intracellular NO and enhanced O2.− levels in the freshly isolated intact aortas of obesity mouse as compared to the control lean mouse. We demonstrate that this method is an easy technique for direct detection and visualization of NO and O2.− in the intact blood vessels and can be widely applied for investigation of endothelial (dys)function under (physio)pathological conditions.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Despite a growing literature on the apparent effects of companion animals on human cardiovascular health, surprisingly little is known about the effects of non-companion animals. This paper describes the result of an experiment that examined the reactions of human subjects to the presence of familiar juvenile chimpanzees. The results indicated that under some conditions (i.e. watching animals) humans show reduced blood pressure similar to that obtained when watching other species, but that under conditions of directly interacting with animals (i.e., touching them) cardiovascular patterns differ. The results indicate that separate mechanisms may be responsible for the stress-buffering effects of observing companion animals and of touching them. These mechanisms may be fruitfully studied by examining the effects of many species on humans in varied circumstances.  相似文献

Face to Face     
Over evolutionary time, humans have developed a selective sensitivity to features in the human face that convey information on sex, age, emotions, and intentions. This ability might not only be applied to our conspecifics nowadays, but also to other living objects (i.e., animals) and even to artificial structures, such as cars. To investigate this possibility, we asked people to report the characteristics, emotions, personality traits, and attitudes they attribute to car fronts, and we used geometric morphometrics (GM) and multivariate statistical methods to determine and visualize the corresponding shape information. Automotive features and proportions are found to covary with trait perception in a manner similar to that found with human faces. Emerging analogies are discussed. This study should have implications for both our understanding of our prehistoric psyche and its interrelation with the modern world.

The hypermodified base 2-methylthio-N6-isopentenyladenosine (ms2i6A) at position 37 occurs frequently in tRNAs that read codons starting with uridine. Here we have studied how ms2i6A affects the accuracy of poly(U) translation in vitro. Deficiency leads to a higher rejection rate of tRNA4(Leu) by more aggressive proofreading on the wild-type ribosome, but with the initial selection step unchanged. Our data indicate that ms2i6A has no effect on codon-anticodon interactions on wild-type ribosomes as long as aminoacyl-tRNA is in ternary complex with EF-Tu and GTP. ms2i6A deficiency in the cognate poly(U) reader tRNA(Phe) leads to increased misreading when the near-cognate competitor tRNA4(Leu) is wild-type. ms2i6A deficiency in tRNA4(Leu) gives a decreased error level in competition with wild-type tRNA(Phe).  相似文献

Three general cases are described which, by their dependencies on an externally applied voltage, should be experimentally separable. They are processes due to (1) permanent dipoles entirely in the field - - (d In k)/d V proportional, variant V(2); (2) surface charge change - - (d In k)/d V proportional, variant V; and (3) charge transport - - dk/d V proportional, variant V (or a delay proportional to 1/V.
