Metamorphosis is common in animals, yet the genetic associations between life cycle stages are poorly understood. Given the radical changes that occur at metamorphosis, selection may differ before and after metamorphosis, and the extent that genetic associations between pre- and post-metamorphic traits constrain evolutionary change is a subject of considerable interest. In some instances, metamorphosis may allow the genetic decoupling of life cycle stages, whereas in others, metamorphosis could allow complementary responses to selection across the life cycle. Using a diallel breeding design, we measured viability at four ontogenetic stages (embryo, larval, juvenile and adult viability), in the ascidian Ciona intestinalis and examined the orientation of additive genetic variation with respect to the metamorphic boundary. We found support for one eigenvector of G (gobsmax), which contrasted larval viability against embryo viability and juvenile viability. Target matrix rotation confirmed that while gobsmax shows genetic associations can extend beyond metamorphosis, there is still considerable scope for decoupled phenotypic evolution. Therefore, although genetic associations across metamorphosis could limit that range of phenotypes that are attainable, traits on either side of the metamorphic boundary are capable of some independent evolutionary change in response to the divergent conditions encountered during each life cycle stage.  相似文献

Current evolutionary models for amphibian life cycles reflect tradeoffs in size-specific growth and mortality rates between the aquatic and terrestrial stages. A limitation of these models is that they do not incorporate evolutionary phenomena that are associated with metapopulation structure. In this work I address components of the evolution of complex life cycles (CLCs) that are tied to the metapopulation dynamics of amphibians that use seasonal wetlands that vary in hydroperiod. In particular, I describe how selection for the minimum length of the larval period affects metapopulation viability and the selection/migration equilibrium. Selection to increase the minimum length of the larval period functionally reduces the number of viable breeding sites on the landscape, increases the average distance between neighboring sites, and increases the risk of metapopulation extinction. Within a metapopulation, asymmetric gene flow between populations that are adapted to different hydroperiods tends to swamp local selection for long larval periods at sites with long hydroperiods. The evolutionary stability of CLCs of many species with metapopulation structure may reflect the fact that extremely small metamorphs cannot survive on land, while lineages with long larval periods incur a high risk of metapopulation extinction. I encourage theorists to more carefully consider how life history traits and metapopulation viability are related for these and other taxa.  相似文献

Patterns of natural selection on size at metamorphosis in water frogs   总被引:19,自引:0,他引:19
Strategies for optimal metamorphosis are key adaptations in organisms with complex life cycles, and the components of the larval growth environment causing variation in this trait are well studied empirically and theoretically. However, when relating these findings to a broader evolutionary or ecological context, usually the following assumptions are made: (1) size at metamorphosis positively relates to future fitness, and (2) the larval growth environment affects fitness mainly through its effect on timing of and size at metamorphosis. These assumptions remain poorly tested, because data on postmetamorphic fitness components are still rare. We created variation in timing of and size at metamorphosis by manipulating larval competition, nonlethal presence of predators, pond drying, and onset of larval development, and measured the consequences for subsequent terrestrial survival and growth in 1564 individually marked water frogs (Rana lessonae and R. esculenta), raised in enclosures in their natural environment. Individuals metamorphosing at a large size had an increased chance of survival during the following terrestrial stage (mean linear selection gradient: 0.09), grew faster and were larger at maturity than individuals metamorphosing at smaller sizes. Late metamorphosing individuals had a lower survival rate (mean linear selection gradient: -0.03) and grew more slowly than early metamorphosing ones. We found these patterns to be consistent over the three years of the study and the two species, and the results did not depend on the nature of the larval growth manipulation. Furthermore, individuals did not compensate for a small size at metamorphosis by enhancing their postmetamorphic growth. Thus, we found simple relationships between larval growth and postmetamorphic fitness components, and support for this frequently made assumption. Our results suggest postmetamorphic selection for fast larval growth and provide a quantitative estimate for the water frog example.  相似文献

Reduced representation genome sequencing such as restriction‐site‐associated DNA (RAD) sequencing is finding increased use to identify and genotype large numbers of single‐nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in model and nonmodel species. We generated a unique resource of novel SNP markers for the European eel using the RAD sequencing approach that was simultaneously identified and scored in a genome‐wide scan of 30 individuals. Whereas genomic resources are increasingly becoming available for this species, including the recent release of a draft genome, no genome‐wide set of SNP markers was available until now. The generated SNPs were widely distributed across the eel genome, aligning to 4779 different contigs and 19 703 different scaffolds. Significant variation was identified, with an average nucleotide diversity of 0.00529 across individuals. Results varied widely across the genome, ranging from 0.00048 to 0.00737 per locus. Based on the average nucleotide diversity across all loci, long‐term effective population size was estimated to range between 132 000 and 1 320 000, which is much higher than previous estimates based on microsatellite loci. The generated SNP resource consisting of 82 425 loci and 376 918 associated SNPs provides a valuable tool for future population genetics and genomics studies and allows for targeting specific genes and particularly interesting regions of the eel genome.  相似文献

Odonates are suggested as bioindicators of human impact. However, their complex life cycles add additional challenges in the practical use as bioindicators, because the level of taxonomic identification could be dependent on life-history stage and, during their ontogeny, dramatic changes occur in their niche (ontogenetic niche shifts). Considering that larvae and adults have different biological characteristics, which could interfere in their performance as bioindicators, we first sought to understand how similar or different environmental factors affect larval and adult life stages in the Odonata. Second, we assessed the level of congruence between (larvae and adult) and within (adult genera and species) life-history stages, considering the taxonomic and numerical resolution. We sampled larvae and adults in 44 streams distributed along a riverine network in southwest Brazil. Larvae samples constituted 20 sampling units of 1 m length each, using the kick sampling method; adults were collected for 1 h at each site with a hand net along a 100-m transect parallel to the stream/river banks. The influence of environmental factors on larvae and adult was assessed by redundancy analysis coupled with forward selection. The congruence level between response matrices was determined by Procrustes analysis. Our results revealed that a set of environmental variables explained a portion of larvae and adults distribution and some environmental factors affect both between (larvae and adults) and within (adult genera and species) life-history stages. Larvae and adult were about 54% congruent, regardless of taxonomic level of adults. Abundance of adult genera and species were 94% congruent, but numerical resolution (abundance vs. incidence) decreased the congruency by 10%. Environmental variables could influence larvae and adults individually or via carry-over effects, i.e., larval environmental conditions that could affect adult fitness components or vice versa. In addition, some odonate behaviors, such as female selection of more appropriate habitats for laying their eggs, could also help us to explain our results, because it could determine larvae distribution. In a biomonitoring perspective, considering the cost-benefit of taxonomic level and sampling of larvae and adults, our results suggest that abundance of adult genera could be used in biomonitoring programs since they capture, respectively, 94% and 54% of the information carried by adult species and larvae.  相似文献

The comparative analysis of morphological, histochemical and cytochemical patterns of eel (Anguilla anguilla L.) hepatocytes reveals clear differences between two stages of its life cycle, i.e. the trophic stage (yellow eel) and reproductive stage (silver eel). The storage of glycogen prevails in the yellow eel, whilst lipids appear to be remarkably increased in the silver eel, in which some hepatocytes also show glycogen-rich areas. Generally, in the silver eel dehydrogenase and acid phosphatase activities seem greater and different distribution of the reaction products is present; on the contrary, a lower G6PDH activity is observed. The electron microscopy characteristics and distribution of both cellular organelles and reserve materials reflect the modifications found at light microscopy. The ultrastructural patterns provide further evidence for the heterogeneity of liver parenchyma in silver eel. In particular, the coexistence of nuclei showing a different degree of chromatin compactness is also accounted for by the quantitative cytochemical data on the nuclear DNA after Feulgen reaction and intercalation with propidium iodide at low and high concentrations. With regard to the DNA content, the hepatocytes in the silver eel as well as in the yellow eel are mainly 2c. However, some 4c values are also found, which according to the literature can be ascribed to cells in G2 phase. The present data may express the onset of different functional requirements during the reproductive stage in comparison with the trophic one. Moreover, our results are consistent with modifications found by other authors as a consequence of interruption of nourishment and during gonad maturation, i.e. two phenomena characterizing the transition from yellow to silver eel.  相似文献

For organisms with complex life histories it is well known that risk experienced early in life, as embryos or larvae, may have effects throughout the life cycle. Although carryover effects have been well documented in invertebrates with different levels of parental care, there are few examples of predator-induced responses in externally brooded embryos. Here, we studied the effects of nonlethal predation risk throughout the embryonic development of newly spawned eggs carried by female shrimp on the timing of egg hatching, hatchling morphology, larval development and juvenile morphology. We also determined maternal body mass at the end of the embryonic period. Exposure to predation risk cues during embryonic development led to larger larvae which also had longer rostra but reached the juvenile stage sooner, at a smaller size and with shorter rostra. There was no difference in hatching timing, but changes in larval morphology and developmental timing showed that the embryos had perceived waterborne substances indicative of predation risk. In addition to carryover effects on larval and juvenile stages, predation threat provoked a decrease of body mass in mothers exposed to predator cues while brooding. Our results suggest that risk-exposed embryos were able to recognize the same infochemicals as their mothers, manifesting a response in the free-living larval stage. Thus, future studies assessing anti-predator phenotypes should include embryonic development, which seems to determine the morphology and developmental time of subsequent life-history stages according to perceived environmental conditions.  相似文献

Models of complex life cycles predict that greater mortality of immature stages should induce earlier metamorphosis at smaller sizes. We tested for effects of one source of mortality, habitat drying, on size at and time to metamorphosis of the tree hole mosquito Aedes triseriatus. In a laboratory experiment, we manipulated two variables associated with drying, volume of water and solute concentration, and recorded mean mass at and median days to eclosion for males and females in replicate cohorts. We also tested for treatment effects on the correlation of mass at and time to eclosion. For females, decreasing volume consistently induced metamorphosis at smaller sizes than did constant volume. Decreasing volume also led to earlier metamorphosis of females than did constant volume, but only in one of two experimental runs. For both sexes, increasing concentration led to greater size at metamorphosis and, for males, earlier metamorphosis than did constant volume, but again only in one of two experimental runs. Correlations of size at and time to metamorphosis tended to be positive for females and negative for males, and this difference was significant. For both sexes, decreasing volume led to larger (more positive) correlations than did constant volume, but only in one of two experimental runs. The effects of decreasing volume on females are consistent with the predictions of models of complex life cycles, and suggest that A. triseriatus can perceive volume changes and modify metamorphosis to escape a deteriorating habitat. The effects of increasing concentration are opposite to those predicted, and are consistent with enhanced growth rates, possibly due to enhanced microbial growth, as solutes become concentrated due to drying. The responses of these mosquitoes to habitat drying are complex, and we suggest that habitat drying increases both mortality and growth rates, yielding no simple predictions of how habitat drying will affect these mosquitoes in natural tree holes.  相似文献

Various life cycle stages of cyst‐producing dinoflagellates often appear differently colored under the microscope; gametes appear paler while zygotes are darker in comparison to vegetative cells. To compare physiological and photochemical competency, the pigment composition of discrete life cycle stages was determined for the common resting cyst‐producing dinoflagellate Scrippsiella lachrymosa. Vegetative cells had the highest cellular pigment content (25.2 ± 0.5 pg · cell?1), whereas gamete pigment content was 22% lower. The pigment content of zygotes was 82% lower than vegetative cells, even though they appeared darker under the microscope. Zygotes of S. lachrymosa contained significantly higher cellular concentrations of β‐carotene (0.65 ± 0.15 pg · cell?1) than all other life stages. Photoprotective pigments and the de‐epoxidation ratio of xanthophylls‐cycle pigments in S. lachrymosa were significantly elevated in zygotes and cysts compared to other stages. This suggests a role for accessory pigments in combating intracellular oxidative stress during sexual reproduction or encystment. Resting cysts contained some pigments even though chloroplasts were not visible, suggesting that the brightly colored accumulation body contained photosynthetic pigments. The differences in pigmentation between life stages have implications for interpretation of pigment data from field samples when sampled during dinoflagellate blooms.  相似文献

Antioxidant enzymes, total glutathione (GSH), and ascorbic acid (ASA) were determined in whole body homogenates of nondiapausing larvae, diapausing larvae during the diapausing period (October, December, and February), and in pupae emerged from both diapausing and nondiapausing larvae of the European corn borer (Ostrinia nubilalis, Hubn., Lepidoptera: Pyralidae). The activities of catalase, selenium nondependent glutathione peroxidase (GPx), and glutathione-S-transferase (GST), as well as the content of GSH and ASA, were found to vary throughout the larval diapause. Compared to diapausing larvae, nondiapausing larvae were higher in levels of catalase, GPx, GST, and dehydroascorbate reductase (DHAR) activity. GSH content was also increased. However, nondiapausing larvae contained less ASA than diapausing ones. Pupae had higher GPx and GST activity and an increased ASA content compared to larvae. The pupae emerged from nondiapausing larvae had higher GST, glutathione reductase (GR), and DHAR activities, but lower GPx activity and ASA content than those emerged from diapausing larvae. Correlation analysis revealed differences in the way the antioxidant level is equilibrated for a particular stage and developmental pattern. The results suggest that cellular antioxidants are involved in both the protection of cells and the regulation of redox levels during the pre-adult stages of Ostrinia nubilalis. Arch. Insect Biochem. 1. Insects lack the acquired immune system of vertebrates, but there is some evidence that insect immunity can be primed against an encountered pathogen to mitigate the intensity of future infections within a life stage. 2. Many invertebrates have multiple life‐history stages separated by complete metamorphosis, but different life stages can often be infected by the same pathogens, and the potential loss of immune priming during metamorphosis could therefore have detrimental effects on the host. Evidence that invertebrate immune priming can persist through metamorphosis is still missing, and consequently it is unclear how host–parasite interactions change across different life‐history stages in the context of infection history. 3. By experimentally manipulating the infection history of the flour beetle Tribolium confusum, we show that intestinal gregarine parasite infections during the larval stage reduced parasite load in adults, demonstrating that a host‐controlled mechanism for parasite resistance can persist through complete metamorphosis in insects. 4. Infections reduced larval developmental rates and increased host mortality but only during the crucial metamorphic stage, indicating that parasites impact multiple life stages. In general, our results demonstrate that invertebrates can show surprisingly robust immune priming despite dramatic physiological changes and protect hosts across completely different life‐history stages.  相似文献

Because mortality accumulates with age, Fisher proposed that the strength of selection acting on survival should increase from birth up to the age of first reproduction. Hamilton later theorized that the strength of selection acting on survival should not change from birth to age at first reproduction. As organisms in nature do not live in uniform environments but, rather, experience periodic stress, we hypothesized that resistance to environmental stress should increase (Fisher) or remain constant (Hamilton) from birth to age at first reproduction. Using the pitcher-plant mosquito, Wyeomyia smithii, we imposed heat stress by simulating the passage of a warm-weather front at different pre-adult and adult stages. Contrary to either Fisher or Hamilton, stress tolerance declined from embryos to larvae to pupae to adults. Consequently, reproductive value appears to have been of little consequence in the evolution of stage-specific tolerance of heat stress in W. smithii.  相似文献

Summary In pot experiments root growth and P uptake were found to precede shoot growth. The high rate of P uptake in the early stages of the life cycle is not an expression of luxury consumption but reflects a high P requirement in plants. Plants cultivated in nutrient solutions with different P concentrations during various stages of development showed that a high P supply (1 ppm) between Feekes stages 6 and 9 (30 days) caused a higher grain yield than the same P concentration between Feekes stages 11 and 17 (30 days). The early applied P caused a high number of fertile ears per area, a high number of grains per ear, and a high P pool in vegetative parts. The latter could be mobilized during the grain-filling period. Therefore, for high grain yields soil and fertilizers have to meet the high P requirement (about 20 g P/m root · day) in an early stage of plant growth. During the grain filling period the P supply can be much lower.  相似文献

Recent advances in high‐throughput sequencing technologies provide opportunities to gain novel insights into the genetic basis of phenotypic trait variation. Yet to date, progress in our understanding of genotype–phenotype associations in nonmodel organisms in general and natural vertebrate populations in particular has been hampered by small sample sizes typically available for wildlife populations and a resulting lack of statistical power, as well as a limited ability to control for false‐positive signals. Here we propose to combine a genome‐wide association study (GWAS) and FST‐based approach with population‐level replication to partly overcome these limitations. We present a case study in which we used this approach in combination with genotyping‐by‐sequencing (GBS) single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) data to identify genomic regions associated with Borrelia afzelii resistance or susceptibility in the natural rodent host of this Lyme disease‐causing spirochete, the bank vole (Myodes glareolus). Using this combined approach we identified four consensus SNPs located in exonic regions of the genes Slc26a4, Tns3, Wscd1 and Espnl, which were significantly associated with the voles’ Borrelia infectious status within and across populations. Functional links between host responses to bacterial infections and most of these genes have previously been demonstrated in other rodent systems, making them promising new candidates for the study of evolutionary host responses to Borrelia emergence. Our approach is applicable to other systems and may facilitate the identification of genetic variants underlying disease resistance or susceptibility, as well as other ecologically relevant traits, in wildlife populations.  相似文献

Total carrageenan levels (55–88% of plant dry weight) of four Gigartina species showed little variation between male, female and tetrasporic plants. However whereas male and female gametophyte plants gave carrageenans with K: λ ratios usually ranging from 1·0 to 4·0, with one species in the range 0·3–0·8, tetrasporophyte carrageenans gave very low K: λ ratios, 0·02–0·1, indicative of a virtual absence of K-carrageenan from plants of this stage of the life cycle.  相似文献

Latitudinal variation in avian life histories can be summarized as a slow–fast continuum, termed the ‘pace of life’, that encompasses patterns in life span, reproduction, and rates of development among tropical and temperate species. Much of the variation in avian pace of life is tied to differences in rates of long-term metabolic energy expenditure. Given the vital role of the mitochondrion in metabolic processes, studies of variation in the mitochondrial genome may offer opportunities to establish mechanistic links between genetic variation and latitudinal ‘pace of life’ patterns. Using comparative genomic analyses, we examined complete mitochondrial genome sequences obtained from nine, broadly distributed Tachycineta swallow species to test for signatures of natural selection across the mitogenome within a phylogenetic framework. Our results show that although purifying selection is the dominant selective force acting on the mitochondrial genome in Tachycineta, three mitochondrial genes (ND2, ND5, and CYTB) contain regions that exhibit signatures of diversifying selection. Two of these genes (ND2 and ND5) encode interacting subunits of NADH dehydrogenase, and amino residues that were inferred to be targets of positive selection were disproportionately concentrated in these genes. Moreover, the positively selected sites exhibited a phylogenetic pattern that could be indicative of adaptive divergence between “fast” and “slow” lineages. These results suggest that functional variation in cytochrome b and NADH dehydrogenase could mechanistically contribute to latitudinal ‘pace of life’ patterns in Tachycineta.  相似文献

The relative duration of the haploid and the diploid phases during the reproductive cycle varies greatly between organisms. This paper addresses the question of the evolution of haploid, diploid, and haplo-diplontic life cycles. When the life span of haploid and diploid individuals is constant whatever their cycle, we show that the haplo-diplontic cycle has an advantage, which depends on the sex-ratio in anisogamous species and on the probability of fertilization in isogamous species. This is because meiosis and fertilization occur half as often in the haplo-diplontic cycle as in haploid or diploid cycles, for the same number of generations of individuals. This argument is demonstrated using a model which considers a genetic determination of the cycle, and fixed haploid and diploid fitnesses. The relevance of measures of fitness of haploid and diploid individuals in predicting the evolution of life cycles is discussed. Measures obtained in algae are compared with theoretical predictions.  相似文献
