A growing body of literature has suggested that video game playing can induce functional and structural plasticity of the brain. The underlying mechanisms, however, remain poorly understood. In this study, functional near‐infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) was used to record prefrontal activities in 24 experienced game players when they played a massively multiplayer online battle arena video game, League of Legends (LOL), under naturalistic conditions. It was observed that game onset was associated with significant activations in the ventrolateral prefrontal cortex (VLPFC) and concomitant deactivations in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) and frontal pole area (FPA). Game events, such as slaying an enemy and being slain by an enemy evoked region‐specific time‐locked hemodynamic/oxygenation responses in the prefrontal cortex (PFC). It was proposed that the VLPFC activities during LOL playing are likely responses to visuo‐motor task load of the game, while the DLPFC/FPA activities may be involved in the constant shifts of attentional states and allocation of cognitive resources required by game playing. The present study demonstrated that it is feasible to use fNIRS to monitor real‐time prefrontal activity during online video game playing.   相似文献

Introduction

Studies of cerebral hemodynamics during motor learning have mostly focused on neurorehabilitation interventions and their effectiveness. However, only a few imaging studies of motor learning and the underlying complex cognitive processes have been performed.

Methods

We measured cerebral hemodynamics using near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) in relation to acquisition patterns of motor skills in healthy subjects using character entry into a touch-screen terminal. Twenty healthy, right-handed subjects who had no previous experience with character entry using a touch-screen terminal participated in this study. They were asked to enter the characters of a randomly formed Japanese syllabary into the touch-screen terminal. All subjects performed the task with their right thumb for 15 s alternating with 25 s of rest for 30 repetitions. Performance was calculated by subtracting the number of incorrect answers from the number of correct answers, and gains in motor skills were evaluated according to the changes in performance across cycles. Behavioral and oxygenated hemoglobin concentration changes across task cycles were analyzed using Spearman’s rank correlations.

Results

Performance correlated positively with task cycle, thus confirming motor learning. Hemodynamic activation over the left sensorimotor cortex (SMC) showed a positive correlation with task cycle, whereas activations over the right prefrontal cortex (PFC) and supplementary motor area (SMA) showed negative correlations.

Conclusions

We suggest that increases in finger momentum with motor learning are reflected in the activity of the left SMC. We further speculate that the right PFC and SMA were activated during the early phases of motor learning, and that this activity was attenuated with learning progress.  相似文献

Learning is often understood as an organism''s gradual acquisition of the association between a given sensory stimulus and the correct motor response. Mathematically, this corresponds to regressing a mapping between the set of observations and the set of actions. Recently, however, it has been shown both in cognitive and motor neuroscience that humans are not only able to learn particular stimulus-response mappings, but are also able to extract abstract structural invariants that facilitate generalization to novel tasks. Here we show how such structure learning can enhance facilitation in a sensorimotor association task performed by human subjects. Using regression and reinforcement learning models we show that the observed facilitation cannot be explained by these basic models of learning stimulus-response associations. We show, however, that the observed data can be explained by a hierarchical Bayesian model that performs structure learning. In line with previous results from cognitive tasks, this suggests that hierarchical Bayesian inference might provide a common framework to explain both the learning of specific stimulus-response associations and the learning of abstract structures that are shared by different task environments.  相似文献

Obesity has been associated with altered cerebral functions including cognitive control. The stop signal task (SST) has been widely used to study cognitive control by producing high conflict stop trials among many low conflict go trials. Contrasting these stop trials with go trials provides a measure of saliency processing and response inhibition. By comparing functional magnetic resonance images of obese (BMI >30) and lean (BMI <22) females performing the SST, we observed differences in regional brain activations despite similar behavioral performance between groups. Specifically, lean females had greater activations in the insula, inferior parietal cortex, cuneus, and supplementary motor area than obese females during stop as compared to go trials. This difference was caused by diminished brain activations in obese females in stop as compared to go trials. Furthermore, the brain activations in these regions inversely correlated to BMI across subjects. These preliminary findings suggest altered neural processes of cognitive control in obesity.  相似文献

Background

Recent neuroimaging studies have revealed that putatively unimodal regions of visual cortex can be activated during auditory tasks in sighted as well as in blind subjects. However, the task determinants and functional significance of auditory occipital activations (AOAs) remains unclear.

Methodology/Principal Findings

We examined AOAs in an intermodal selective attention task to distinguish whether they were stimulus-bound or recruited by higher-level cognitive operations associated with auditory attention. Cortical surface mapping showed that auditory occipital activations were localized to retinotopic visual cortex subserving the far peripheral visual field. AOAs depended strictly on the sustained engagement of auditory attention and were enhanced in more difficult listening conditions. In contrast, unattended sounds produced no AOAs regardless of their intensity, spatial location, or frequency.

Conclusions/Significance

Auditory attention, but not passive exposure to sounds, routinely activated peripheral regions of visual cortex when subjects attended to sound sources outside the visual field. Functional connections between auditory cortex and visual cortex subserving the peripheral visual field appear to underlie the generation of AOAs, which may reflect the priming of visual regions to process soon-to-appear objects associated with unseen sound sources.  相似文献

Background

Dysfunctions of the prefrontal cortex have been previously reported in individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Previous studies reported that first-degree relatives of individuals with ASD show atypical brain activity during tasks associated with social function. However, developmental changes in prefrontal dysfunction in ASD and genetic influences on the phenomena remain unclear. In the present study, we investigated the change in hemoglobin concentration in the prefrontal cortex as measured with near-infrared spectroscopy, in children and adults with ASD during the letter fluency test. Moreover, to clarify the genetic influences on developmental changes in the prefrontal dysfunction in ASD, unaffected siblings of the ASD participants were also assessed.

Methodology/Principal Findings

Study participants included 27 individuals with high-functioning ASD, age- and IQ-matched 24 healthy non-affected siblings, and 27 unrelated healthy controls aged 5 to 39 years. The relative concentration of hemoglobin ([Hb]) in the prefrontal cortex was measured during the letter fluency task. For children, neither the [oxy-Hb] change during the task nor task performances differed significantly among three groups. For adults, the [oxy-Hb] increases during the task were significantly smaller in the bilateral prefrontal cortex in ASD than those in control subjects, although task performances were similar. In the adult siblings the [oxy-Hb] change was intermediate between those in controls and ASDs.

Conclusion/Significance

Although indirectly due to a cross-sectional design, the results of this study indicate altered age-related change of prefrontal activity during executive processing in ASD. This is a first near-infrared spectroscopy study that implies alteration in the age-related changes of prefrontal activity in ASD and genetic influences on the phenomena.  相似文献

Variability of neural discharges can be revealing about the computations and network properties of neuronal populations during the performance of cognitive tasks. We sought to quantify neuronal variability in the prefrontal cortex of naïve monkeys that were only required to fixate, and to examine how this measure was altered by learning and execution of a working memory task. We therefore performed analysis of a large database of recordings in the same animals, using the same stimuli, before and after training. Our results indicate that the Fano Factor, a measure of variability, differs across neurons depending on their functional properties both before and after learning. Fano Factor generally decreased after learning the task. Variability was modulated by task events and displayed lowest values during the stimulus presentation. Nonetheless, the decrease in variability after training was present even prior to the presentation of any stimuli, in the fixation period. The greatest decreases were observed comparing populations of neurons that exhibited elevated firing rate during the trial events. Our results offer insights on how properties of the prefrontal network are affected by performance of a cognitive task.  相似文献

Intelligence is our ability to learn appropriate responses to new stimuli and situations. Neurons in association cortex are thought to be essential for this ability. During learning these neurons become tuned to relevant features and start to represent them with persistent activity during memory delays. This learning process is not well understood. Here we develop a biologically plausible learning scheme that explains how trial-and-error learning induces neuronal selectivity and working memory representations for task-relevant information. We propose that the response selection stage sends attentional feedback signals to earlier processing levels, forming synaptic tags at those connections responsible for the stimulus-response mapping. Globally released neuromodulators then interact with tagged synapses to determine their plasticity. The resulting learning rule endows neural networks with the capacity to create new working memory representations of task relevant information as persistent activity. It is remarkably generic: it explains how association neurons learn to store task-relevant information for linear as well as non-linear stimulus-response mappings, how they become tuned to category boundaries or analog variables, depending on the task demands, and how they learn to integrate probabilistic evidence for perceptual decisions.  相似文献

It has been speculated that humans have an inherent ability to overcome sleepiness that counteracts homeostatic sleep pressure. However, it remains unclear which cortical substrate activities are involved in the ability to overcome sleepiness during the execution of cognitive tasks. Here we sought to confirm that this ability to overcome sleepiness in task execution improves performance on cognitive tasks, showing activation of neural substrates in the frontal cortex, by using a modified n-back (2- and 0-back) working memory task and functional near-infrared spectroscopy. The change in alertness was just correlated with performances on the 2-back task. Activity in the right prefrontal cortex changed depending on alertness changes on the 2- and 0-back tasks independently, which indicates that activity in this region clearly reflects the ability to overcome sleepiness; it may contribute to the function of providing sufficient activity to meet the task load demands. This study reveals characteristics of the ability to overcome sleepiness during the n-back working memory task which goes beyond the attention-control function traditionally proposed.  相似文献

Using a newly developed perfused rat brain model, we examined direct effects of each change in cerebral blood flow (CBF) and oxygen metabolic rate on cerebral hemoglobin oxygenation to interpret near-infrared spectroscopy signals. Changes in CBF and total hemoglobin (tHb) were in parallel, although tHb showed no change when changes in CBF were small (< or =10%). Increasing CBF caused an increase in oxygenated hemoglobin (HbO(2)) and a decrease in deoxygenated hemoglobin (deoxy-Hb). Decreasing CBF was accompanied by a decrease in HbO(2), whereas changes in direction of deoxy-Hb were various. Cerebral blood congestion caused increases in HbO(2), deoxy-Hb, and tHb. Administration of pentylenetetrazole without increasing the flow rate caused increases in HbO(2) and tHb with a decrease in deoxy-Hb. There were no significant differences in venous oxygen saturation before vs. during seizure. These results suggest that, in activation studies with near-infrared spectroscopy, HbO(2) is the most sensitive indicator of changes in CBF, and the direction of changes in deoxy-Hb is determined by the degree of changes in venous blood oxygenation and volume.  相似文献

We present a method to compare brain activity recorded with near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) in a dance video game task to that recorded in a reduced version of the task using fMRI (functional magnetic resonance imaging). Recently, it has been shown that fNIRS can accurately record functional brain activities equivalent to those concurrently recorded with functional magnetic resonance imaging for classic psychophysical tasks and simple finger tapping paradigms. However, an often quoted benefit of fNIRS is that the technique allows for studying neural mechanisms of complex, naturalistic behaviors that are not possible using the constrained environment of fMRI. Our goal was to extend the findings of previous studies that have shown high correlation between concurrently recorded fNIRS and fMRI signals to compare neural recordings obtained in fMRI procedures to those separately obtained in naturalistic fNIRS experiments. Specifically, we developed a modified version of the dance video game Dance Dance Revolution (DDR) to be compatible with both fMRI and fNIRS imaging procedures. In this methodology we explain the modifications to the software and hardware for compatibility with each technique as well as the scanning and calibration procedures used to obtain representative results. The results of the study show a task-related increase in oxyhemoglobin in both modalities and demonstrate that it is possible to replicate the findings of fMRI using fNIRS in a naturalistic task. This technique represents a methodology to compare fMRI imaging paradigms which utilize a reduced-world environment to fNIRS in closer approximation to naturalistic, full-body activities and behaviors. Further development of this technique may apply to neurodegenerative diseases, such as Parkinson’s disease, late states of dementia, or those with magnetic susceptibility which are contraindicated for fMRI scanning.  相似文献

Near-infrared reflection spectroscopy, used experimentally for investigation of tissue hemoglobin content and oxygenation in various flaps, was tested in the pedicled transverse rectus abdominis musculocutaneous (TRAM) flap, chosen as a simple clinical model because of its well-known vascular anatomy and clinical relevance. The study intended to answer the following questions: Does the near-infrared reflection spectroscopy system used in this study measure tissue hemoglobin content and oxygenation in the superficial skin layers only, as proposed by the manufacturer? Is near-infrared reflection spectroscopy able to detect differences of tissue hemoglobin content and oxygenation in distinct zones of the TRAM flap skin before, early, and late after surgery? Does tissue hemoglobin content and oxygenation correspond to blood flow in the supplying superior epigastric artery and to clinical signs of TRAM flap perfusion and viability? In 11 patients, tissue hemoglobin content and oxygenation in the lower abdomen/TRAM flap, mastectomy skin flap, and contralateral breast were measured by a new near-infrared reflection spectroscopy system preoperatively, early postoperatively, and late postoperatively. Simultaneously, systolic peak flow in the ipsilateral superior epigastric artery was obtained by color-coded duplex sonography. Routine clinical monitoring was performed throughout the early postoperative period. Tissue hemoglobin content and oxygenation in the lower abdomen, mastectomy skin flap, and contralateral breast were similar before surgery but varied considerably between different patients. There were no significant differences among preoperative, early postoperative, and late postoperative values of tissue hemoglobin content and oxygenation in the mastectomy skin flap and contralateral breast. However, near-infrared reflection spectroscopy measurements of the TRAM flap revealed significant differences between preoperative and early postoperative values of tissue hemoglobin content and oxygenation and among zones I, II, and III early after surgery. Tissue hemoglobin content in the TRAM flap skin increased and oxygenation decreased early after surgery. Near-infrared reflection spectroscopy values corresponded to clinical signs of venous congestion predominantly in zone III. Late postoperative return of hemoglobin content and oxygenation in the TRAM flap toward preoperative values can be attributed to improved venous return by reversed flow across regurgitant valves and development of collateral circulation. Finally, there was a significant increase of systolic peak flow in the ipsilateral superior epigastric artery early after surgery. This could be related to the opening of small-caliber choke arteries between the superior and deep inferior epigastric arteries following ligation of the dominant deep inferior epigastric artery and TRAM flap transfer to the chest. Systolic peak flow returned to preoperative values late after surgery. The near-infrared reflection spectroscopy system used in this study appeared to measure hemoglobin content and oxygenation in the superficial skin layers only. Near-infrared reflection spectroscopy was able to detect differences of tissue hemoglobin content and oxygenation in the TRAM flap between preoperative and postoperative measurements and between distinct zones of the TRAM flap early postoperatively. Postoperative changes in near-infrared reflection spectroscopy values corresponded to clinical observations and blood flow in the superior epigastric artery measured by color-coded duplex sonography. Further experience is needed before near-infrared reflection spectroscopy can be advocated for routine clinical flap monitoring.  相似文献

Near-infrared reflection spectroscopy has been used in various experimental and clinical settings to investigate tissue perfusion and oxygenation noninvasively. Its application in plastic surgery has only recently been reported. The current study used near-infrared reflection spectroscopy to monitor cutaneous microcirculation in breast skin flaps after inferior pedicle reduction mammaplasty. Thirty patients underwent bilateral reduction mammaplasty by a modified Robbins technique. Near-infrared reflection spectroscopy measurements were performed preoperatively and postoperatively at several defined positions of the breast. The reflection spectroscopy system was capable of detecting absolute values of total hemoglobin in milligrams per milliliter of tissue and tissue hemoglobin oxygen saturation in percent. Color-coded duplex sonography was used to visualize nutrient vessels of the inferior dermoglandular pedicle and to measure systolic peak flow in the arteries supplying the nipple-areola complex. Reflection spectroscopy values were examined for changes during the postoperative course. Reflection spectroscopy and duplex sonography values were analyzed for differences between patients with normal and compromised skin flap perfusion and wound healing, which was assessed clinically and by ultrasound. Preoperative reflection spectroscopy values demonstrated local, regional, and interindividual variations. Postoperatively, characteristic changes of tissue hemoglobin oxygen saturation and total hemoglobin were observed in all patients during the 2-week follow-up. Reflection spectroscopy values differed significantly between breast and nipple-areola skin. Tissue hemoglobin oxygen saturation was significantly lower, and total hemoglobin significantly higher, in patients with impaired wound healing compared with patients having normal wound healing. However, systolic peak flow in arteries of the inferior dermoglandular pedicle did not reveal differences between patients with impaired or normal wound healing of the nipple-areola complex. Near-infrared reflection spectroscopy allows the detection of hemoglobin content and oxygenation in skin flaps. Changes in tissue hemoglobin oxygen saturation and total hemoglobin reflect hemodynamic changes in skin flaps during normal and pathological wound healing. Because of considerable intraindividual and interindividual variations, trend values seem to be superior to single measurements. Although in this study, near-infrared reflection spectroscopy was capable of distinguishing between normal and impaired perfusion in skin flaps in a clinical model, its future implication may be the early detection of vascular compromise in free flaps.  相似文献

Background

fMRI and EEG are two non-invasive functional imaging techniques within cognitive neuroscience that have complementary advantages to obtain both temporal and spatial information. The multi-source interference task (MSIT) has been shown to generate robust activations of the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC) on both a single-subject level and in group averages, in fMRI studies. We have now simultaneously acquired fMRI and EEG during a cognitive interference task.

Materials and Methods

Healthy volunteers were tested in an MRI scanner with simultaneous EEG and fMRI recordings during the MSIT.

Results

The interference condition significantly increased the reaction time in the task. The fMRI analyses revealed activation of dACC as expected, in all subjects at the individual level and in group analyses. The posterior cingulate cortex was de-activated. Simultaneous EEG showed the expected anterior distribution of the interference effect, as it was restricted to frontal sites within a time frame of 80–120 ms post response.

Conclusion

The MSIT task is a reliable task for interference evaluation. fMRI shows robust activation of dACC and by adding EEG, an interference effect can be noticed within a temporal interval of 80–120 ms after the response, as a CRN (correct response negativity). This means that EEG could add a more detailed temporal aspect to the fMRI data from an interference task, and that despite the hostile environment within an MRI scanner, EEG data could be used.  相似文献

Attributing behavioral outcomes correctly to oneself or to other agents is essential for all productive social exchange. We approach this issue in high-functioning males with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) using two separate fMRI paradigms. First, using a visual imagery task, we extract a basis set for responses along the cingulate cortex of control subjects that reveals an agent-specific eigenvector (self eigenmode) associated with imagining oneself executing a specific motor act. Second, we show that the same self eigenmode arises during one's own decision (the self phase) in an interpersonal exchange game (iterated trust game). Third, using this exchange game, we show that ASD males exhibit a severely diminished cingulate self response when playing the game with a human partner. This diminishment covaries parametrically with their behaviorally assessed symptom severity, suggesting its value as an objective endophenotype. These findings may provide a quantitative assessment tool for high-functioning ASD.  相似文献

Ice hockey performance was studied during 10 contests to assess time-motion characteristics and associated physiological changes that occur for each position. Depending on the position played, the actual playing time per game for forwards and defensemen ranged between 20.7 and 28.0 min. The number of shifts ranged from 14 to 21 with an average playing time of 85.4 s/shift. Further analysis of each shift indicated that there was an average of 2.3 play stoppages which averaged 27.1 s, producing a continuous playing time of 39.7 s. Telemetered recordings of heart rate during each shift revealed sustained rates of between 170 and 174 beats/min over the three periods of the game. For both the forwards and defensemen, values for blood lactates were highest during the first and second periods (x = 78.0 and 66.1 mg/100 ml), then declined considerably during the third period (x = 44.5 mg/100 ml). Blood glucose showed a similar tendency (x = 139.3, 133.7, 114.1 mg/100 ml), while hematocrit and total protein showed little tendency to change.  相似文献

There is a constantly growing interest in developing efficient methods to enhance cognitive functioning and/or to ameliorate cognitive deficits. One particular line of research focuses on the possibly cognitive enhancing effects that action video game (AVG) playing may have on game players. Interestingly, AVGs, especially first person shooter games, require gamers to develop different action control strategies to rapidly react to fast moving visual and auditory stimuli, and to flexibly adapt their behaviour to the ever-changing context. This study investigated whether and to what extent experience with such videogames is associated with enhanced performance on cognitive control tasks that require similar abilities. Experienced action videogame-players (AVGPs) and individuals with little to no videogame experience (NVGPs) performed a stop-change paradigm that provides a relatively well-established diagnostic measure of action cascading and response inhibition. Replicating previous findings, AVGPs showed higher efficiency in response execution, but not improved response inhibition (i.e. inhibitory control), as compared to NVGPs. More importantly, compared to NVGPs, AVGPs showed enhanced action cascading processes when an interruption (stop) and a change towards an alternative response were required simultaneously, as well as when such a change had to occur after the completion of the stop process. Our findings suggest that playing AVGs is associated with enhanced action cascading and multi-component behaviour without affecting inhibitory control.  相似文献

Recent studies in adult male rats have shown that gonadal hormones influence performance on certain working memory and other types of cognitive tasks that are sensitive to lesions of the medial and/or orbital prefrontal cortices. This study asked whether gonadal hormone modulation of prefrontal cortical function in males also extends to the perirhinal division of the rat prefrontal cortex. Specifically, sham-operated control, gonadectomized, and gonadectomized rats supplemented with testosterone propionate or estradiol were tested on a spontaneous novel object recognition task, a paradigm where performance has been shown to be impaired by perirhinal cortical lesions. Using analyses of variance, regression analyses and post-hoc testing to evaluate group differences, it was found that during both the sample and test trials of the task all four groups spent similar absolute and proportional amounts of time ambulating, rearing, stationary, and exploring the two objects present. All groups also explored each of the two identical objects present during sample trials equally. However, during the test trials, only the control and gonadectomized rats given testosterone showed the expected increase in exploration of the novel objects presented, whereas the gonadectomized and gonadectomized, estradiol-supplemental groups continued to explore the novel and familiar objects equally. That regression analyses also identified significant correlations between low bulbospongiosus muscle weight and impaired novel vs. familiar object discrimination further indicates that gonadectomy in adult male rats adversely affects spontaneous novel object recognition in an androgen-sensitive, estrogen-insensitive manner.  相似文献

In both hot and cold environments, tissue oxygen saturation levels may affect muscle performance. Using near-infrared spectroscopy, muscle oxygen saturation (StO2) and total hemoglobin levels were measured during exercise. Lowering skin temperature caused a greater StO2 and total hemoglobin decrease by 16% and 15.9%, respectively, compared to controls. Increasing skin temperature resulted in a smaller decrease in both StO2 and total hemoglobin by 12.2% and 8.2%, respectively, compared to controls. These data indicate that warming the skin will cause less of decrease in StO2 and total hemoglobin, while cooling the skin has the opposite effect.  相似文献
