The zinc and lead concentrations were compared in several pairs of sediment cores obtained with a modified K-B corer and by Scuba diver from Coon Lake, Canada. A slow approach to and penetration of the sediments (ca. 0.1 m s-1) was employed for both coring devices. The modified K-B corer gave similar lead and zinc profiles to the diver cores. The divers observed that the K-B corer caused no disturbance of the surface sediment layers as it approached and entered the sediments. These results suggest that the K-B corer is suitable for use in lake studies requiring short, undisturbed cores from fine-grained sediments.  相似文献

During one year, concentration profiles of sulfate and methane were measured in sediment cores of eutrophic Lake Loosdrecht. Sulfate concentrations decreased exponentially with depth towards a constant threshold value of 7.6 ± 6.1 μM. Concentration profiles were used to calculate fluxes of sulfate and methane and to estimate the anaerobic mineralization rate. Anaerobic mineralization was highest in autumn which was probably due to an increased sedimentation of easily degradable organic carbon. At high rates (>600 μ mol organic carbon .m−2.h−1), sulfate reduction appeared to be limited by sulfate and methanogenesis accounted for over 80% of the anaerobic mineralization. At low anaerobic mineralization rates, measured in winter and spring, sulfate reduction was predominant. There was little methanogenesis below 5 cm depth in the sediment which indicated a rapid decrease of degradable organic matter with depth. There was a remarkable difference, especially in winter, between methane fluxes which were measured in batch experiments and those calculated from the concentration profiles in the sediment. The seasonal variation and depth distribution of the capacity for denitrification and dissimilatory NO3 reduction to NH4+ (NO3 ammonification) were studied in the upper 4 cm of the sediment of Norsminde Fjord estuary, Denmark. A combination of C2H2 inhibition and 15N isotope techniques was used in intact sediment cores in short-term incubations (maximum, 4 h). The denitrification capacity exhibited two maxima, one in the spring and one in the fall, whereas the capacity for NO3 ammonification was maximal in the late summer, when sediments were progressively reduced. The denitrification capacity was always highest in the uppermost 1 cm of the sediment and declined with depth. The NO3 ammonification was usually higher with depth, but the maximum activity in late summer was observed within the upper 1 cm. The capacity for NO3 incorporation into organic material was investigated on two occasions in intact sediment cores and accounted for less than 5% of the total NO3 reduction. Denitrification accounted for between 13 and 51% of the total NO3 reduction, and NH4+ production accounted for between 4 and 21%, depending on initial rates during the time courses. Changes of the rates during the incubation were observed in the late summer, which reflected synthesis of denitrifying enzymes. This time lag was eliminated in experiments with mixed sediment because of preincubation with NO3 and alterations of the near-environmental conditions. The initial rates obtained in intact sediment cores therefore reflect the preexisting enzyme content of the sediment.  相似文献

The effect of vegetation cover on the decomposition of organic matter (alpha cellulose) was studied at three sediment depths (5, 15 and 25 cm) in the littoral area of a small Lake Kiruvere (Estonia). The experiment was carried out in two adjacent sites, with and without vegetation, using the litter bag method. At all sediment depths decomposition was faster at the site covered with vegetation, and was highest at 5 cm sediment depth (decomposition rate k = 0.0037 day−1) and lower at 15 and 25 cm depths (k = 0.0014 day−1 and k = 0.0013 day−1). Higher decomposition rates coincided with higher root mass in the sediment. Decomposition rates were similar at all sediment depths in the site without a vegetation cover (k = 0.0007-0.0009 day−1). The presence of a vegetation cover also affected temperatures in sediments. Temperatures were several degrees higher at all sediment depths in the area with vegetation cover, than in the area without. Mean sediment temperature differences between the two experiment areas were 1.4 °C at 5 cm sediment depth, 2.5 °C at 15 cm depth and 3.1 °C at 25 cm depth. Higher decomposition rates in the site covered with vegetation can be explained by oxygen dispersion from young roots in the higher sediment layers and by higher sediment temperatures due to the internal gas flow enhancing the microbial activity in the lower sediment layers.  相似文献

Caesium-137 and lead-210 dating of recent sediments from Mondsee (Austria)   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0  
Mean annual sedimentation rates over the last 20–30 years were determined in the pre-alpine Mondsee (Upper Austria) using Cs-137 and Pb(Po)-210 profiles for sediment core dating and two natural sediment markers. Lower sedimentation rates of about 2–3 mm yr–1 were observed in the central part of the lake near the shore at 18–20 m and in the southern part at 30 m depth. Higher sedimentation rates of 4–7 mm yr–1 were found in the central part of the lake at 47 and 65 m and in the northern bay at 18 and 41 m depth. At both these sites the Pb-210 profiles were strongly disturbed in the upper zone of the sediment cores, whereas the Cs-137 pattern remained intact. The higher annual sediment accumulation rates can be explained only partly by deposition of allochthonous material discharged by the streams, enhanced eutrophication in these parts of the lake, erosion and sediment focusing by turbidity currents being also probable.  相似文献

Coring in recent lake sediments is most easily performed using lightweight open barrel gravity corers. The cores will in most cases have the fine lamination intact and they may thus be interpreted as representative of the sediment in situ.Parallel cores taken by means of other techniques have shown that cores taken with open barrel gravity corers become shorter than the distance of penetration in the sediment. This investigation shows that the shortening depends both on the corer diameter and on its velocity during the penetration. Experiments also show that soft layers become more reduced in thickness than stiffer ones. This may lead to misinterpretation of sedimentation rate during special periods. Seasonally occurring sediment fractions may be diluted or concentrated during the coring.  相似文献

The seasonal variation in sulfate reduction ana the dynamics or sulfur ana iron geochemistry were studied throughout a year in sediment of Aarhus Bay, Denmark. A radiotracer method for measuring sulfate reduction rates was applied with incubation times down to 15 min and a depth resolution down to 2 mm in the oxidized surface layer of the sediment. The radiotracer data were analyzed by a mathematical model which showed that, due to partial, rapid reoxidation of radioactive sulfide during incubation, the actual reduction rates in this layer were probably underestimated 5-fold. In the deeper, sulfidic zone, measured rates appeared to be correct. Sulfate reduction followed the seasonal variation in temperature with maximum activity at 1–2 cm depth in late summer. In spite of its rapid production, free H2S was detectable in the porewater only below the depth of free Fe2+ at 6–7 cm throughout the year. Following the massive sedimentation from a spring phytoplankton bloom, anaerobic degradation of phytoplankton detritus was strongly stimulated over several weeks. A transient reversed redox zonation developed with a thin, black zone on top of the brown, oxidized sediment layer due to intensive sulfate and iron reduction. Extended abstract Lake Grevelingen is a brackish water lake in the SW Netherlands. The lake has an area of 108 km2, a mean depth of 5.3 m (maximum 48 m), a mean chlorinity of 13 to 16%0 Cl, and a hydraulic residence time of about 8 years. Mass budget studies have shown a consistent seasonal pattern in the phosphorus sediment-water exchange in Lake Grevelingen (Kelderman 1980). From May to August a P mobilization from the sediment takes place, estimated atca. 12.5 mg P · m−2 · day−1. The sediment accumulatesca. 5.5 mg P · m−2 · day−1 during the rest of the year. Temperature may be an important factor in establishing this pattern. Sediment-water exchange was studied by means of laboratory experiments under specified conditions. Sediment cores (30 cm depth, 11 cm diameter) were taken at four stations in the lake, with sediment types varying from medium- to muddy sand (Fig. 1). The cores with overlying water (ca. 21) were placed in the dark at 5 °C in thermostatically controlled water baths. After a week's incubation time the temperature was slowly raised, such that after three weeks eight cores (four sediment types, duplicates) were at 5 °C, eight were at 10 °C, eight at 15 °C and eight at 20 °C. A new corer, the tom-tom, is a modification of the basic Kajak design. New modifications increase the efficiency of the corer in soft muds and increase the stability of the corer during ascent and descent. A stepped release trigger mechanism allows the corer to trip easily in even the softest muds, and a Phleger “bomb’ weight adds stability to the device. The corer can be deployed in a slow, controlled descent from small as well as large boats to reduce bow-wave. Four cores (4.50 cm inner diameter) are taken simultaneously in a fixed spatial pattern. Limited comparative sampling revealed that the tom-tom collected more meiofauna than a Van Veen grab and attained numbers statistically indistinguishable from diver-collected cores (only small sample sizes were available however). The corer will be most efficient in sediments without an extremely well-developed, suspendable layer, and most practical for smaller vessels in environments where diver collected cores are precluded by depth, strong currents or poor visibility. Although used in meiofauna collection, the corer should be appropriate for any sampling needs requiring a relatively undisturbed core.  相似文献

Comparison of sulfur concentrations within lake sediment profiles   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Sediment cores from lakes in four regions (Adirondacks, Northern New England, Northern Great Lakes States, and Northern Florida) were analyzed for total S concentration. In all regions S concentrations in pre-1900 (1820–1900) sediment were similar and pre-1900 net sediment accumulation rates of S were not significantly different. Sulfur enrichment was greatest in Adirondack lake sediment (Big Moose L., Upper Wallface P., Queer L., and Deep L.), which had total post-1900 S accumulation of 1.1 to 7.4 times pre-1900 S accumulation; post-1900 net sediment accumulation rates of S were significantly greater than the other regions. Sediment from Maine (Little Long P. and Haystack P.) and Vermont (Mud P.) generally had lower S concentration than Adirondack sediments. Sulfur enrichment factors in these lakes ranged from 1.2 to 2.1. There was a positive correlation between contemporary limnetic sulfate concentration and post-1900 net sediment accumulation rates for Adirondack and Northern New England study lakes. Sediment from the Northern Great Lakes States region (McNearney, Andrus, Hustler L. and Dunnigan L.) had similar S concentration and distribution with depth to Northern New England sediment. In two Northern Florida lakes (Mirrow and Fore) sediment showed little variation in S concentration with depth, but L. Mary and L. Barco had higher S in deeper layers (30–55 cm). These different patterns of S distribution among lakes were attributed to differences in limnetic sulfate concentration, organic and inorganic sedimentation, and S diagenesis.  相似文献

Methods to provide accurate accumulation rates for lake models are discussed. Cores were taken in 1979 in two basins of Lake Lucerne, Switzerland, and accumulation rates were calculated by using Pb-210 dating and by a natural landslide marker of 1795 in one basin (Weggis). In the other basin (Horw Bay) the sediment accumulation rates based on the lead method were compared with yearly sedimentation rates measured by sediment traps in 1969/70. At the Weggis station, the core dating yielded sediment accumulation rates of about 400 g dry wt. m–2 y–1 with the lead method, averaged over a sediment depth of 4–20 cm; accumulation was about 700 g dry wt. m–2 y–1 with the marker method, averaged over 0–33 cm. In Horw Bay, the trap method yielded about 1300 g dry wt. M–2 y–1 compared with 400–1000 g dry wt. m–2 y–1 obtained with the lead method and related to various depth intervals. The characteristic sources of error of the three methods as well as several hypotheses for these discrepancies are discussed.  相似文献

Depth profiles of oxygen concentration and the redox status of acid-extractable iron were measured in littoral sediment cores of Lake Constance after mechanical removal of surface sediment, mixing, and re-deposition. In undisturbed sediment cores, oxygen penetrated down to 2.9±0.4 mm or 4.6±0.4 mm depth, respectively, after 12 h of incubation in the dark or light; causing a net diffusive flux of 108±20 nmol cm−2 h−1 oxygen into or 152±35 nmol cm−2 h−1 out of the sediment. The uppermost 20 mm layer of the undisturbed sediment cores contained 10.2± 0.7 μmol cm−3 ferrous and 3.8±1.1 μmol cm−3 ferric iron. After erosion, the oxic–anoxic interface in the newly exposed sediment was shifted to about 2 mm depth within 30 min, causing an oxygen flow into the sediment. During the following 12 h, oxygen penetrated deeper into the sediment, and in the light oxygen was produced photosynthetically. Ferrous iron was largely oxidized within two days after erosion. The oxidation rates were higher in oxic than in anoxic sediment layers, and decreased with time. This oxidation process took the longer and was confined closer to the surface the more reduced the exposed sediment had been before. Resuspension of eroded sediment in aerated lake water did not cause a significant oxidation or reduction of iron. After re-deposition, the oxic–anoxic interface in the re-sedimented material shifted to about 2 mm depth within 30 min, causing an oxygen flow into the sediment. During the following 12 h, the oxygen penetration depth and the oxygen flow rate into the re-deposited sediment did not change any further, and no oxygen was produced in the light. Ferric iron was reduced during the first day after re-deposition, and partly re-oxidized during the second day. The extent of reduction was stronger and the extent of oxidation weaker the more reduced the resuspended sediment was before. Oxic conditions in the sediment surface were established faster and ferrous iron was oxidized to a larger extent after erosion of sediment than after resuspension and sedimentation.  相似文献

The results of the first systematical investigation into the aerobic methanotrophic communities inhabiting the bottom sediments of Lake Baikal have been reported. Use of the radioisotopic method revealed methane consumption in 12 10- to 50-cm-long sediment cores. The maximum methane consumption rates (495–737 µl/(dm3 day) were recorded in sediments in the regions of hydrothermal vents and oil and gas occurrence. Methane consumption was most active in the surface layers of the sediments (0–4 cm); it decreased with the sediment depth and became negligible or absent at depths below 20 cm. The number of methanotrophic bacteria usually ranged from 100 to 1000 cells/cm3 of sediment and reached 1 million cells/cm3 in the regions of oil and gas occurrence. The seventeen enrichment cultures obtained were represented mainly by morphotype II methanotrophs. Phylogenetic analysis of the enrichment cultures in terms of the amino acid sequence of the α subunit of the membrane-bound methane monooxygenase (MMO) revealed the predominance of methanotrophs of the genus Methylocystis. Sediment cores were collected from nine wetland lakes in Morocco, Tunisia and Egypt for the CASSARINA project investigating environmental change in Northern African wetlands. The cores were dated radiometrically by using natural (210Pb) and artificial (137Cs and 241Am) radionuclides. At sites in Morocco and Tunisia with mean annual rainfall totals ranging from 500–1000 mm yr–1, fallout records were generally satisfactory and it was possible to develop independent sediment chronologies based on the radiometric data alone. At the Egyptian sites, rainfall was less than 200 mm yr–1 and fallout records were much less distinct. At these sites the radiometric data could only be used to give an indication of mean sedimentation rates during the past 30–40 years. By using a combination of fallout radionuclide, pollen, and macrofossil stratigraphic records it was however possible to determine a credible sediment chronology spanning the major part of the 20th century. Applying this chronology to records of spheroidal carbonaceous particles (SCP) from the same sediment cores, the onset of significant levels of atmospheric pollution in the Nile Delta is dated in all three cores to the mid 1950s. Results from a number of lakes (Sidi Bou Rhaba, Ichkeul and Korba) revealed high and accelerating siltation rates, threatening their continued existence beyond the next few decades. In contrast, sedimentation rates at all three Nile Delta sites appear to have declined in recent decades, most probably due to the impact of the Nile barrages.  相似文献

Intensity of mineralization processes in mountain lakes in NW Slovenia   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
The potential and actual intensity of mineralization in sediments of fourteen mountain lakes and one subalpine lake in NW Slovenia have been measured. Potential mineralization was measured as the intensity of the electron transport system (ETS) activity of microzoobenthos and microbial communities and the actual mineralization as the oxygen consumption of respiration processes, both measured at a standard temperature of 20°C. The lakes are of different trophic levels and some exhibit seasonal anoxia. All but one are hardwater lakes. Two layers of sediment cores from the deepest point of the lakes were analysed: a surface layer and one below 15 cm. Significant differences among different lakes in their ETS activity and oxygen consumption in the surface and lower layers of sediment were observed. ETS activities and oxygen consumption rates were higher in the surface layers of all the lakes. From the three investigated deterministic factors (temperature, lake depth and total phosphorus in the water column) on sedimentary metabolism ETS activity in the surface layer correlated significantly with total phosphorus and lake depth, but oxygen consumption rate showed a significant correlation only with total phosphorus. The relationship between oxygen consumption and ETS activity was also investigated. ETS activities correlated with oxygen consumption rates according to the equation of logR = 0.421* logETS + 0.898 (r=0.82; n=30; p<0.001). The R/ETS ratio was lower at the sediment surface than in the layers deeper than 15 cm. It is concluded that ETS activity and oxygen consumption are good indicators of the intensity of the metabolic activity and mineralization in lake sediments. As the characteristics of lakes and some environmental factors influence the ETS activity and the oxygen consumption differently, the same R/ETS ratio should not be used as conversion factor in calculations for different lakes.  相似文献

A handy impact corer for sampling of surface sediment (< 50 cm) in lakes is described. The coring apparatus consists of a sample tube, tube holder, stopper, stopper holder, shaft with wing, shaft holder, hammer, and pushing rod. The total weights are 3.8 kg (Type I: 2.3 cm inside diameter of the tube) and 6.7 kg (Type II: 5.5 cm inside diameter of the tube). The system enables confirmation of the vertical landing of the corer onto the lake bottom and effective entering of sediment into the sample tube using hammer, and prevention of falling out of the core using stopper and pushing rod.  相似文献

This paper outlines a novel two-stage procedure for estimating medium-term (ca. 40 years) rates of overbank sedimentation on British lowland floodplains, and exploring the relationship between floodplain morphology, floodwater hydraulics and fine sediment storage. The first stage utilises a two-dimensional hydraulic model that solves the depth-averaged shallow water equations over a high resolution topographic grid. This model is used to predict distributed patterns of flow depth and velocity within floodplain reaches approximately 0.4–0.6 km in length for floods of varying magnitude. These hydraulic data are then used, in conjunction with a simple sediment transport and deposition model, to estimate rates and patterns of floodplain sedimentation. This procedure was applied to a series of eight sites on the floodplain of the River Culm, Devon, UK, with contrasting morphological characteristics (e.g., channel sinuosity, channel numbers and dimensions, bankfull discharge, floodplain width, etc). The hydraulic modelling procedure was validated using ground and oblique aerial photography of floodwater inundation patterns. Estimates of medium-term sedimentation derived from 137Cs analysis of floodplain sediment cores were used to calibrate the sediment deposition model. Results indicate that within-reach variability in sedimentation rates reflects small-scale topographic controls on local flow characteristics and sediment transport and deposition processes. In contrast, between-reach variations in total sediment storage are largely a product of downstream changes in gross valley floor morphology and flood frequency. Preliminary estimates of the total sediment flux to the floodplain of the River Culm for the basin as a whole are consistent with previous estimates and highlight the importance of floodplain sedimentation as a component of the overall catchment sediment budget.  相似文献

The distribution and abundance of viable resting eggs of copepod Acartia pacifica in Xiamen Bay, China, were determined in the laboratory by the presence of nauplii hatched from the sediments. Sediment cores to a depth of 30 cm, sliced at 1.0 cm intervals, showed that most viable resting eggs of A. pacifica occurred near the sediment surface (0-5 cm), and the number of viable eggs sharply decreased with depth of the sediment, although resting eggs remained viable as deep as 23 cm. 210Pb analyses of the sediments indicated that the maximum age of viable eggs of A. pacifica was 20.5 years and the mean egg age was 4.3 years. The egg mortality of A. pacifica in the sediment was 0.1408 year−1, or 85.92% annual egg survival, calculated by regressing ln(egg density) on the age of the sediment. The horizontal distribution of viable resting eggs ranged from 2.27×103 to 3.85×105 m−2, with a mean value of 9.49×104 m−2. Regressions between viable eggs of A. pacifica and all fine-fraction particle size classes (at 2 μm intervals) were not significant. The accumulation of viable resting eggs that can persist for an extended period of time provided evidence for the existence of an egg bank of A. pacifica in the seabed of Xiamen Bay.  相似文献

Ucides cordatus is an abundant mangrove crab in Brazil constructing burrows of up to 2 m depth. Sediment around burrows may oxidize during low tides. This increase in sediment-air contact area may enhance carbon degradation processes. We hypothesized that 1) the sediment CO2 efflux rate is greater with burrows than without and 2) the reduction potential in radial profiles in the sediment surrounding the burrows decreases gradually, until approximating non-bioturbated conditions. Sampling was conducted during the North Brazilian wet season at neap tides. CO2 efflux rates of inhabited burrows and plain sediment were measured with a CO2/H2O gas analyzer connected to a respiration chamber. Sediment redox potential, pH and temperature were measured in the sediment surrounding the burrows at horizontal distances of 2, 5, 8 and 15 cm at four sediment depths (1, 10, 30 and 50 cm) and rH values were calculated. Sediment cores (50 cm length) were taken to measure the same parameters for plain sediment. CO2 efflux rates of plain sediment and individual crab burrows with entrance diameters of 7 cm were 0.7–1.3 µmol m−2 s−1 and 0.2–0.4 µmol burrows−1 s−1, respectively. CO2 released from a Rhizophora mangle dominated forest with an average of 1.7 U. cordatus burrows−1 m−2 yielded 1.0–1.7 µmol m−2 s−1, depending on the month and burrow entrance diameter. Laboratory experiments revealed that 20–60% of the CO2 released by burrows originated from crab respiration. Temporal changes in the reduction potential in the sediment surrounding the burrows did not influence the CO2 release from burrows. More oxidized conditions of plain sediment over time may explain the increase in CO2 release until the end of the wet season. CO2 released by U. cordatus and their burrows may be a significant pathway of CO2 export from mangrove sediments and should be considered in mangrove carbon budget estimates.  相似文献

Sediment cores from the profundal region of relatively young (ca. 45 years), warm‐monomictic Lake Vechten were dated with Cs and 210Pb and analyzed for major carotenoids, chlorophyll, and pheophytin. Vertical sediment accretion rates determined from a clay/sand horizon and from the radionuclide datings varied between 0.60 and 0.74 cm/year. Sedimentation rates based on paniculate matter collected in sediment traps agreed with results of the 137Cs method with average values of respectively 2.9 and 2.3 kg dry weight m‐2 year‐1. It was concluded that the profundal sediment is fairly undisturbed. Pigments showed a severalfold increase from the deepest to the superficial sediment layers. Their profiles were compared with limnological data obtained during previous studies of Lake Vechten. Evidence was provided that the distribution of pigments reflected grossly the trophic history of the lake, which became more eutrophic during the last two decades. Pigment analyses of sediment cores may be a useful tool to rapidly obtain rough basic information on the recent trophic development of stratified lakes liable to eutrophication.  相似文献
