It was suggested by Heinrich that cryptic, palatable caterpillars would adopt foliar foraging techniques which would reduce the chance of their being detected. I wished to test this hypothesis further and to determine the post-discovery tactics. I found that caterpillars of Larentia clavaria pallidat, contrary to expectations, usually rested on upper surfaces of young Althaea setosa leaves but moved to the undersides when exposed to higher light intensities. This species may be effectively concealed by older canopy leaves. These larvae usually responded to predator-like stimuli by assuming a deimatic s form but rarely dropped. Dropping may be infrequent partly because younger caterpillars could not easily relocate the foot plant. I discuss, briefly the implications of host-plant selection.  相似文献

It is commonly held that food-aversion learning should be more prevalent in polyphagous herbivores than in specialists. We tested the ability of Popillia japonica, a polyphagous scarab, to learn avoidance of a palatable but illness-inducing plant. Beetles that feed on flowers of geranium, Pelargonium × hortorum, became paralyzed, although most recovered within 24 h. In choice tests, naive beetles strongly preferred geranium petals over leaves of linden, Tilia cordata, a highly suitable host. Experienced beetles maintained this preference although it resulted in repeated bouts of paralysis. Fecundity was >10 times higher for beetles fed linden foliage for 2 wk than for those fed only geranium. Nevertheless, when a surplus of both foods was provided, the beetles fed mainly on geranium, resulting in greatly reduced fecundity. These results contradict the view that generalists should show propensity for food-aversion learning. Indeed, in this case, P. japonica continued to prefer the toxic plant, compromising its fitness.  相似文献

Summary We show that Alaskan woody plants respond to browsing in two ways that might destabilize a plantherbivore interaction and account for snowshoe hare population cycles. (1) Browse production of preferred, earliersuccessional woody plants increases in response to moderate levels of browsing. Such yield increases are potentially destabilizing. Later successional woody plants show decreases in yield after moderate browsing, which is consistent with the persistence of snowshoe hares in late successional refuge habitats (Keith 1966, Wolff 1980). (2) Many woody plants are destructively overbrowsed or girdled at the peak of the snowshoe hare cycle. The more palatable and plastic, early to mid successional plants respond by sprouting accompanied by juvenile reversion. Sprouts are markedly less palatable than mature shoots. We show here that sprout palatability and twig biomass are restored in 2–3 years for earlier successional plants, but palatability may not recover for 4–10 years in sprouts of some mid to late successional plants. The decrease in palatability helps to account for the snowshoe hare crash (assuming that damage to more palatable plants is widespread during the peak), and the 2–3 year time lag for recovery of more palatable species could account for (May 1974) the observed 8–11 year period of the hare cycles. Browse yield increases acting during the snowshoe hare population nadir and increase, and sprouting with juvenile reversion acting during the hare peak and decline can in principle account for the oscillatory nature and the observed 8–11 year periodicity of the snowshoe hare cycle.  相似文献

The effect of cereal leaf surface wax on Diuraphis noxia (Mordvilko), the Russian wheat aphid, probing behavior and nymphoposition was evaluated. Ultrastructure of leaf epicuticular wax from wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) c.v. Arapahoe and Halt was different from barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) c.v. Morex, and oat (Avena sativa L.) c.v. Border. Both wheat cultivars had similar rod-shaped epicuticular wax, while barley and oat plants had flakes. The chemical composition comparison of gas chromatograms also indicated that the extract of the two wheat cultivars had similar pattern of peaks, while the barley and oat leaves had similar peaks. Cereal variety significantly affected aphid probing behavior (P < 0.05), but wax removal using ethyl ether swab did not (P < 0.05). Aphids initiated significantly more probes on Border oat leaves than on Morex barley irrespective of wax removal, although total probing duration per aphid was not significantly different among the four cereals examined. Accumulative salivation duration per aphid on oat leaves with wax was significantly longer than other cereal leaves with wax, while accumulative ingestion duration per aphid on Arapahoe wheat and Morex barley was significantly longer than on oat. Nymphoposition of D. noxia on cereal leaves maintained on the benzimidazole-agar medium showed that aphids produced a greater number of nymphs on Morex barley and less on Border oat leaves, although wax removal did not affect aphid nymphoposition. Removal of leaf epicuticular waxes from the 4 cereal genotypes using ethyl ether swab indicated that the influence of wax on plant resistance to D. noxia probing and reproduction was limited. Morex barley was the most favorable, while Border oat was the least favorable cereal host of D. noxia.  相似文献

Summary The potential of-lactams as intermediates for the access to- and-amino acid-derived peptides is shortly reviewed, with major focus on the technologies developed in our group. The two general strategies lie, on one side, in the oxidative ring expansion of 3-hydroxy-lactams toN-carboxy-amino acid anhydrides or Leuch's anhydrides and subsequent coupling with-amino acid esters and, on the other side, in the nucleophilic ring opening ofN-Boc--lactams. Both approaches have been successfully applied to the synthesis of,-diamino acid,-amino--hydroxy acid, polyhydroxylated-amino acid,,-disubstituted-amino acid,-amino acid,-amino--hydroxy acid and,-disubstituted-amino acid derived peptides. Because of the mild reaction conditions needed for the above transformations and the highly stereoselective procedures employed for the construction of the starting-lactam ring, the whole process allows the production of optically pure final products.  相似文献

Freezing/thawing conditions for cryopreservation of somatic embryos of Washington Navel sweet orange (Citrus sinensis (L.) Osb.) were evaluated. No survival of fast-cooled embryos occurred regardless of the thawing method. Embryos subjected to slow cooling at an estimated rate of 0.5°C min-1 down to –42°C followed by immersion in liquid nitrogen survived. Survival rate depended on the thawing method. An average survival of 30.5% was achieved when frozen embryos were thawed by immersion in a water bath at 37°C. Surviving embryos developed into whole plantlets and no phenotypic abnormalities have been observed during a growth period of four years. Total soluble proteins and peroxidase and esterase isoenzyme analysis did not show differences between treated plants and non-frozen controls.  相似文献

Winter turnip rape Brassica rapa ssp. oleifera was shown to have reduced palatability to woodpigeons, enhanced susceptibility to adult flea beetle feeding and reduced susceptibility to larval flea-beetle infection when compared with winter oilseed rape (B. napus) cultivars in field trials. Levels of leaf waxes were negatively correlated with feeding preferences of adult flea beetles. Analysis of volatiles from damaged leaves showed that while all cultivars produce a similar range of nitriles, cyanoepithioalkanes and isothiocyanates, derived from 3-butenyl, 4-pentenyl and phenylethyl glucosinolates, B. rapa leaves produced relatively high levels of 1-methylpropyl isothiocyanate, although there was significant plant-to-plant variation. The possible involvement of this mustard oil glycoside and variation in epicuticular waxes in plant-herbivore interactions are discussed.  相似文献

The influence of leaf epicuticular waxes of nine woody species from cerrado (a savanna ecosystem of Brazil) on the foraging behavior of the leaf-cutting antAtta sexdens rubropilosa Forel, 1908 (Formicidae, Attini) was investigated. Some waxes showed neither inhibitory nor attractive effect over a series of tests, while a second group caused a delayed rejection. Waxes of two species were shown to be strongly deterrent to the ants. Since different waxes caused different responses, it is concluded that their chemical composition, rather than hydrophobicity or mechanical constraints, accounts for the observed effects. Plant species with leaves rejected by the ants did not necessarily have repellent waxes. On the other hand, no species with acceptable leaves yielded waxes with deterrent effects.  相似文献

Several sorts of variation in the interaction between the insect, Phyllotreta nemorum L. (Coleoptera:Chrysomelidae:Alticinae), and the plant, Barbarea vulgaris R.Br. (Brassicaceae), have been discovered: 1) genetic differences in the levels of defences in the plant, 2) genetic differences in the ability of insects to cope with the plant defences, 3) seasonal variation in levels of defences in the plant, and 4) differences between leaf types in levels of defences.Two plant accessions were suitable for larval development throughout the season while the remaining nine accessions were more or less unsuitable for larvae from the susceptible T-population at least at certain times of the year. All accessions were suitable for the resistant E-population throughout the year. There was a seasonal variation in levels of defences in some accessions which were unsuitable for the T-population during the summer period when beetles were present, but not during autumn and spring when the beetle were hibernating. Upper (younger) cauline leaves of these accessions had higher levels of defences than lower (older) cauline leaves. The resistant E-population used B. vulgaris as a natural host plant while the susceptible T-population did not. The use of B. vulgaris as a natural host plant by the E-population of P. nemorum seems to be an extension of the host plant range of the species. Variation in plant defences may have facilitated the switch in host plant use by the resistant flea beetle population.  相似文献

Summary Adults of the leaf beetle Plagiodera versicolora Laich, avoided previously injured shoots of Salix alba Tristis in favor of nearby uninjured ones. The response was rapid and persisted for five days of study. During brief periods of observation, the vast majority of beetles engaged in behaviors other than locomotion such as feeding and resting. Furthermore, the proportions of beetles walking were similar on injured and uninjured shoots. It appears that under these experimental conditions previous injury did not greatly increase searching behavior of the beetles. Leaves on previously injured shoots received less subsequent herbivory than uninjured ones. Findings of these experiments are consistent with patterns of herbivory observed in the field and known reproductive responses of beetles to diets of injured leaves. These results provide new information toward understanding relatively low levels of herbivory on individual willow leaves associated with the feeding of P. versicolora.  相似文献

The leaves of young rye plants (Secale cereale L.) grown at 32° were deficient in chlorophyll and in chloroplastic rRNA as compared to those grown at 22°, which developed normally. Both chlorophyll accumulation and the formation of plastidic rRNA were largely restored at 32° when the plants were transfered several times for 1 h per day to 22°. In the chlorotic 32°-grown rye leaves the in vivo activity of -aminolevulinate synthetase was very low. Aminolevulinate dehydratase however, exhibited high activity in extracts from 32°-grown leaves and was localized in the plastid fraction isolated from the chlorotic leaf tissue. After application of -aminolevulinic acid to chlorotic parts of leaves growing at 32°, protochlorophyll(ide) was formed and accumulated in the dark. In the light, the protochlorophyll(ide) was photooxidized at 32°. The results suggest a cytoplasmic site of synthesis for the series of enzymes converting -aminolevulinate to protochlorophyll(ide). Grasses, which dominate many terrestrial ecosystems, sustain high densities of grazing mammals, so are of great economic and ecological importance. Traditionally, grasses are thought to be adapted to tolerate grazing rather than defend against it; however, silica deposited in the leaves of grasses has recently been shown to act as a feeding deterrent to invertebrate herbivores and small mammals. This study assesses whether silica is effective as a feeding deterrent to larger mammalian herbivores. We assess the impact of manipulated silica levels in five grass species on the feeding preferences of sheep both within and between grass species.Sheep feeding behaviour was driven by between-species differences in palatability. Hence, within a single species silica addition did not cause significant changes in feeding preference. However, there were significant differences in both the feeding preferences and bite rates between grass species, and these differences were much more marked when the grasses had been exposed to high levels of silica. The impacts that silica had on preference were least pronounced in palatable species (e.g. Poa annua) compared with less-palatable species (e.g. Brachypodium pinnatum and Festuca ovina). Sheep fed for longer, took more bites and had a higher bite rate on the grass species with the lowest leaf silica concentrations, namely P. annua.Sheep were less affected by silica defences than smaller, non-ruminant herbivores, but the changes in species preference rankings caused by silica suggest it may lead to changes in sward composition. Further, in species that are already relatively low in palatability, silica-induced reductions in bite rate could potentially reduce forage intake rates, with consequences for sheep performance.  相似文献

The effect of various basal salts media, containing different nitrogen levels on in vitro adventitious shoot regeneration from leaf explants of Louise Bonne Panachee and Seckel pear (Pyrus communis L.) were investigated. Among the different basal salt formulae tested, Nitsch (1969) gave significantly better regeneration in most of the experiments. Shoot regeneration was altered with different NH4 +-N/NO3 -N ratios. The best regeneration was obtained when NH4 +:NO3 was either 1:2 or 1:3 regardless of overall N concentration. In addition, these data show that NH4 + was essential for adventitious shoot regeneration from pear leaf explants on White's (1943) medium.  相似文献

Summary The nucleation and the elongation of microtubules from isolated nuclei of higher plant cells were investigated. Isolated intact nuclei failed to nucleate microtubules at their surface when they were incubated with purified tubulin from plant or animal sources. However, frozen and thawed nuclei or nuclear particles obtained by gentle nuclei homogenization nucleated microtubules and nucleated microtubules elongated radially from the surface of nuclei or from the nuclear particles. Microtubules radiating from the nuclear particles were very much shorter than those radiating from frozen and thawed nuclei. The washing of the nuclear particles diminished the ability of the particles to nucleate microtubules. The ability of the washed nuclear particles to nucleate microtubules was restored by the addition of the soluble fraction of a nuclear homogenate. The complexes of radiating microtubules could easily be observed under a phasecontrast microscope. Electron microscopy demonstrated that microtubules in the complexes formed bundles. The staining with a monoclonal antibody specific for plant tubulin of the complexes of radiating microtubules, prepared by successive polymerization of animal tubulin and plant tubulin, revealed that microtubules in the complex incorporated tubulin at their proximal ends. This result indicates that the mode of incorporation of tubulin onto frozen and thawed nuclei or onto the nuclear particles is different from that in pericentriolar bodies in animal cells. Four methods for classifying cultivated rices (Oryza sativa L.) (including IR varieties) into indica and japonica types — waxy gene product in endosperm starch, glutelin 3 molecular weight in milled rice, RFLP polymorphism at the Wx locus and Glaszmann's isozyme method — were compared. On the basis of the two endosperm traits and the RFLP method Glaszmann's group 1 (indica) was classified as mainly indica and intermediate groups 2, 3 and 4 as exclusively indica. However, the endosperm traits classified Glaszmann's group 5 as mainly indica, while the RFLP method classified it as japonica. The RFLP waxy gene probe was closest to the isozyme method in classifying group 6 as japonicas; the waxy gene product gave mainly indica reaction even in group 6, and the glutelin 3 method was intermediate. All IR rices were classified as being indica on the basis of Wx gene product and by Glaszmann's method, but a few were classified as japonica by the glutelin 3 method and by the RFLP waxy gene probe.  相似文献

The water potentials of frozen leaves of Afroalpine plants were measured psychrometrically in the field. Comparison of these potentials with the osmotic potentials of an expressed cellular sap and the water potentials of ice indicated almost ideal freezing behaviour and suggested equilibrium freezing. On the basis of the osmotic potentials of expressed cellular sap, the fractions of frozen cellular water which correspond to the measured water potentials of the frozen leaves could be determined (e.g. 74% at -3.0° C). The freezing points of leaves were found to be in the range between 0° C and -0.5° C, rendering evidence for freezing of almost pure water and thus confirming the conclusions drawn from the water-potential measurements. The leaves proved to be frost resistant down to temperatures between -5° C and -15° C, as depending on the species. They tolerated short supercooling periods which were necessary in order to start ice nucleation. A new type of computer controlled spectrophotometer is described which is based on an array of independent, monochromatic pulsed light sources consisting of light emitting diodes (LED) equipped with narrow band interference filters. The LEDs are sequentially pulsed at a high repetition rate. The absorbance information at specific wavelengths is sampled in the s-time range, using a computer-controlled, highly selective technique of synchronous amplification. A first prototype of this LED Array Spectrophotometer allows simultaneous recording of kinetic changes at 16 different wavelengths in the range from 530 to 600 nm, with a time resolution of 1 ms/point. Special features of the new type of spectrophotometer are: Weak integrated measuring light intensity, high signal/noise ratio even with scattering samples like intact leaves, active baseline adjustment by LED current regulation, computer control of system operation and data analysis. To deconvolute the complex absorbance changes in the cytochrome -band region, standard spectra of the major components are stored in computer memory and used for curve fitting of difference spectra and kinetic changes. As an example of application, the light-induced absorbance changes in a heat-pretreated spinach leaf are analysed. We have successfully transferred and expressed a reporter gene driven by an -amylase promoter in a japonica type of rice (Oryza sativa L. cv. Tainung 62) using the Agrobacterium-mediated gene transfer system. Immature rice embryos (10–12 days after anthesis) were infected with an Agrobacterium strain carrying a plasmid containing chimeric genes of -glucuronidase (uidA) and neomycin phosphotransferase (nptII). Co-incubation of potato suspension culture (PSC) with the Agrobacterium inoculum significantly improved the transformation efficiency of rice. The uidA and nptII genes, which are under the control of promoters of a rice -amylase gene (Amy8) and Agrobacterium nopaline synthase gene (nos), respectively, were both expressed in G418-resistant calli and transgenic plants. Integration of foreign genes into the genomes of transgenic plants was confirmed by Southern blot analysis. Histochemical localization of GUS activity in one transgenic plant (R0) revealed that the rice -amylase promoter functions in all cell types of the mature leaves, stems, sheaths and roots, but not in the very young leaves. This transgenic plant grew more slowly and produced less seeds than the wild-type plant, but its R1 and R2 progenies grew normally and produced as much seeds as the wild-type plant. Inheritance of foreign genes to the progenies was also confirmed by Southern blot analysis. These data demonstrate successful gene transfer and sexual inheritance of the chimeric genes.  相似文献

The effects of temperature on the dark relaxation kinetics of nonradiative energy dissipation in photosystem II were compared in lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) chloroplasts and leaves of Aegialitis annulata R. Br. After high levels of violaxanthin de-epoxidation in the light, Aegialitis leaves showed a marked delay in the dark relaxation of nonradiative dissipation, measured as non-photochemical quenching (NPQ) of photosystem II chlorophyll a fluorescence. Aegialitis leaves also maintained a moderately high adenylate energy charge at low temperatures during and after high-light exposure, presumably because of their limited carbon-fixation capacity. Similarly, dark-sustained NPQ could be induced in lettuce chloroplasts after de-epoxidizing violaxanthin and light-activating the ATP synthase. The duration and extent of dark-sustained NPQ were strongly enhanced by low temperatures in both chloroplasts and leaves. Further, the NPQ sustained at low temperatures was rapidly reversed upon warming. In lettuce chloroplasts, low temperatures sharply decreased the ATP-hydrolysis rate while increasing the duration and extent of the resultant trans-thylakoid proton gradient that elicits the NPQ. This was consistent with a higher degree of energy-coupling, presumably due to reduced proton diffusion through the thylakoid membrane at the lower temperatures. The chloroplast adenylate pool was in equilibrium with the adenylate kinase and therefore both ATP and ADP contributed to reverse coupling. The low-temperature-enhanced NPQ quenched the yields of the dark level (Fo) and the maximal (Fm) fluorescence proportionally in both chloroplasts and leaves. The extent of NPQ in the dark was inversely related to the efficiency of photosystem II, and very similar linear relationships were obtained over a wide temperature range in both chloroplasts and leaves. Likewise, the dark-sustained absorbance changes, caused by violaxanthin de-epoxidation (A508nm) and energy-dependent light scattering (A536nm) were strikingly similar in chloroplasts and leaves. Therefore, we conclude that the dark-sustained, low-temperature-stimulated NPQ in chloroplasts and leaves is apparently directly dependent on lumen acidification and chloroplastic ATP hydrolysis. In leaves, the ATP required for sustained NPQ is evidently provided by oxidative phosphorylation in the mitochondria.
