Oil palm is widely grown in Malaysia. Palm oil has attracted the attention of researchers to develop an 'environmentally friendly' and high quality fuel, free of nitrogen and sulfur. In the present study, the catalytic cracking of palm oil to biofuel was studied over REY catalyst in a transport riser reactor at atmospheric pressure. The effect of reaction temperature (400-500 degrees C), catalyst/palm oil ratio (5-10) and residence time (10-30s) was studied over the yield of bio-gasoline and gas as fuel. Design of experiments was used to study the effect of operating variables over conversion of palm oil and yield of hydrocarbon fuel. The response surface methodology was used to determine the optimum value of the operating variables for maximum yield of bio-gasoline fraction in the liquid product obtained.  相似文献

A thermotolerant and rapidly-growing yeast for production of single cell protein from palm oil was isolated and identified as Candida tropicalis F129. The optimum temperature and pH for growth were 38°C and 6.0, respectively. The yeast grew with a high specific growth rate, of 0.92/h in 2% (v/v) palm oil medium, compared with other oil-assimilating yeasts or hydrocarbon-utilizing thermophilic yeasts. The overall cell yield was 1.01 g dry cells/g palm oil after 12 h.  相似文献

Palm oil has a balanced fatty acid composition and has no trans fat. As a result, its use in food has increased as food-labeling laws have changed to specify trans fat content. Increasing oil production is the main goal in oil palm breeding. Genetic mapping and genomic studies in palm trees are necessary to understand the genetic architecture of economic traits of importance for palm oil production. To help achieve this, we sampled 422 oil palms from MPOB (Malaysian Palm Oil Board)Angola germplasm collection and measured 13 economic traits from these palms. Multi-locus genome-wide association studies (GWAS) were conducted using least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) and genome-wide efficient mixed model analysis. We identified 19 quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for 8 traits. Of these, four Angola-specific QTLs associated with bunch components were detected on chromosomes 4, 8, and 11. These QTLs are potentially useful for introgression of desirable genes from the Angola palms to advanced breeding populations for improvement of bunch and oil yield traits. The majority of the QTLs were detected by LASSO-A, in which the p values of individual markers were calculated based on bootstrapped standard errors. Many of the detected QTLs are nearby known QTLs detected from linkage studies reported by other research groups. We also conducted genomic selection (GS) for the 13 traits and concluded that GS can be an effective tool for oil palm breeding. This is the first GWAS and GS study conducted on oil palm germplasm from Angola, and the results can be very useful in oil palm genetic studies and breeding.  相似文献

A growing body of literature has demonstrated significant biodiversity losses for many taxa when forest is converted to oil palm. However, no studies have directly investigated changes to biodiversity throughout the oil palm life cycle, in which oil palm matures for 25–30 yr before replanting. This process leads to major changes in the oil palm landscape that likely influence species assemblages and ecosystem function. We compare frog assemblages between mature (21–27‐yr old) and recently replanted (1–2‐yr old) oil palm in Sumatra, Indonesia. Across eighteen 2.25‐ha oil palm plots, we found 719 frogs from 14 species. Frog richness was 31 percent lower in replanted oil palm (nine species) than mature oil palm (13 species). Total frog abundance was 47 percent lower in replanted oil palm, and frog assemblage composition differed significantly between the two ages of oil palm. The majority of frog species were disturbance‐tolerant, although we encountered four forest‐associated frog species within mature oil palm despite a distance of 28 km between our study sites and the nearest extensive tract of forest. Although it is clear that protection of forest is of paramount importance for the conservation of tropical fauna, our results indicate that management decisions within tropical agricultural landscapes also have a profound impact on biodiversity. Practices such as staggered replanting or maintenance of connectivity among mature oil palm patches could help maintain frog diversity in the oil palm landscape.  相似文献

Reciprocal recurrent selection (RRS) has been adopted for oil palm breeding in Indonesia.Due to a long selection cycle and the large area required, a satisfactory oil palm progeny trial is difficult to conduct.Knowledge of the parental genetic parametersis very important in achieving the expected genetic progress, but the evaluation of these parameters is constrained by highly unbalanced data sets. In this study, the unbalanced agronomic data sets and the pedigree information of an oil palm breeding programme in Indonesia were analysed by using the restricted maximum likelihood (REML) and the best linear unbiased predictor (BLUP)methods. The characters analysed were bunch and oil yields of the adult period (from 7 to 9 years after planting). The coefficients of parentage varied from 0.125 to 0.891 and from zero to 0.750 between parents in the Deli and African groups, respectively. The average coefficients of inbreeding were 0.269 and 0.166 for the parents within the Deli and African groups, respectively. The additive variances of the bunch number, industrial oil-extraction rate and oil yield characters were higher in the parents of the Deli group than those in the African ones. The coefficients of correlation between the predicted and observed hybrids performances varied from 0.55 to 0.64 for oil yield, 0.49 to 0.71 for bunch number, 0.47 to 0.58 for bunch production, 0.48 to 0.64 for industrial oil-extraction rate and 0.42 to 0.56 for plant-height increment. For selection on the basis of oil yield character, BLUPs ability to predict single-cross performance should be sufficient, and will result in a significant contribution to the oil palm seed and clone productions. Oil palm is an important economic crop for Malaysia. Genetic engineering could be applied to produce transgenic oil palms with high value-added fatty acids and novel products to ensure the sustainability of the palm oil industry. Establishment of a reliable transformation and regeneration system is essential for genetic engineering. Biolistic was initially chosen as the method for oil palm transformation as it has been the most successful method for monocotyledons to date. Optimization of physical and biological parameters, including testing of promoters and selective agents, was carried out as a prerequisite for stable transformation. This has resulted in the successful transfer of reporter genes into oil palm and the regeneration of transgenic oil palm, thus making it possible to improve the oil palm through genetic engineering. Besides application of the Biolistics method, studies on transformation mediated by Agrobacterium and utilization of the green fluorescent protein gene as a selectable marker gene have been initiated. Upon the development of a reliable transformation system, a number of useful targets are being projected for oil palm improvement. Among these targets are high-oleate and high-stearate oils, and the production of industrial feedstock such as biodegradable plastics. The efforts in oil palm genetic engineering are thus not targeted as commodity palm oil. Due to the long life cycle of the palm and the time taken to regenerate plants in tissue culture, it is envisaged that commercial planting of transgenic palms will not occur any earlier than the year 2020.  相似文献

Oil palm trunks are a possible lignocellulosic source for ethanol production. Low enzymatic digestibility of this type of material (11.9% of the theoretical glucose yield) makes pretreatment necessary. An enzymatic digestibility of 95.4% with insoluble solids recovery of 49.8% was achieved after soaking shredded oil palm trunks in ammonia under optimum conditions (80 °C, 1:12 solid-to-liquid ratio, 8 h and 7% (w/w) ammonia solution). Treatment with 60 FPU of commercial cellulase (Accellerase 1000) per gram of glucan and fermentation with Saccharomyces cerevisiae D5A resulted in an ethanol concentration of 13.3 g/L and an ethanol yield of 78.3% (based on the theoretical maximum) after 96 h. These results indicate that oil palm trunks are a biomass feedstock that can be used for bioethanol production.  相似文献

Thousands of tonnes of dry oil palm trunks will be produced annually in Malaysia after about 1990. A project was initiated to study the feasibility of converting palm trunks into charcoal. Carbonisation was done at terminal temperatures of 400–550°C with holding times of 1–3 h and at two heating rates. From laboratory-scale pyrolysis studies, it was found that holding time does not affect the quantity and quality of the charcoal produced, while heating rate has a minor influence. However, as terminal temperature increases, both yield and volatile content decrease while the fixed carbon content increases. The calorific value and ash contents are independent of the parameters studied and their respective values are 4032 kcal/kg and 37.2%. Since the calorific value is low and the ash content high, it is concluded that oil palm trunks are not suitable for the production of charcoal fuel.  相似文献

Leaf area is an important parameter in oil palm breeding as it is positively correlated with oil yield. However, measurement of leaf area is tedious and also destructive. In the present study, a breeding population with 145 palms derived from a cross between Deli Dura and Avros Pisifera was used to construct a high-density linkage map and identify quantitative trait loci (QTL) for leaf area in oil palm. Using genotyping by sequencing, a linkage map containing 2413 SNPs was constructed. The total length of the linkage map was 1161.89 cM, with an average marker spacing of 0.48 cM. Based on the continuous phenotyping of leaf area from 2010 to 2015, two suggestive QTL for leaf area were mapped on chromosomes (Chr) 3 and 9. The allelic effects of the QTL associated with leaf area in the mapping population were estimated by linear regression using ordinary least squares method. The QTL on Chr 9 explained 13.3% of phenotypic variation for leaf area. A candidate gene, ARC5, within the narrow interval of QTL on Chr 9 was identified. The gene was significantly higher expressed in leaf than root and fruit of oil palm. This high-quality and SNP-based map supplies a base to fine map QTL for agronomic traits in oil palm, and the markers closely linked to the stable QTL may be used in marker-assisted selection in oil palm breeding.  相似文献

Microclimate and habitat heterogeneity through the oil palm lifecycle   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The rapid expansion of oil palm cultivation and corresponding deforestation has invoked widespread concern for biodiversity in Southeast Asia and throughout the tropics. However, no study explicitly addresses how habitat characteristics change when (1) forest is converted to oil palm, or (2) through the dynamic 25–30-year oil palm lifecycle. These two questions are fundamental to understanding how biodiversity will be impacted by oil palm development. Our results from a chronosequence study on microclimate and vegetation structure in oil palm plantations surrounding the Pasoh Forest Reserve, Peninsular Malaysia, show dramatic habitat changes when forest is converted to oil palm. However, they also reveal substantial habitat heterogeneity throughout the plantation lifecycle. Oil palm plantations are created by clear-cutting forests and then terracing the land. This reduces the 25 m-tall forest canopy to bare ground with a harsh microclimate. Eight-year-old oil palm plantations had 4 m open-canopies; 22-year-old plantations had 13 m closed-canopies. Old plantations had significantly more buffered microclimates than young plantations. Understory vegetation was twice as tall in young plantations, but leaf litter depth and total epiphyte abundance were double in old plantations. Nonetheless, leaf litter coverage was patchy throughout the oil palm life cycle due to the stacking of all palm fronds. Overall, oil palm plantations were substantially hotter (+2.84 °C) and drier (+0.80 hPa vapor pressure deficit), than forests during diurnal hours. However, there were no nocturnal microclimate differences between forests and plantations. Finally, we describe how the variable retention of old palm trees during crop rotation can retain habitat features and maintain more stable microclimate conditions than clear-cutting senescent plantations. We discuss the implications of habitat changes for biodiversity and introduce three methods to utilize temporal habitat heterogeneity to enhance the quality of the oil palm landscape matrix.  相似文献

Oil palm agriculture is rapidly expanding in the Neotropics, at the expense of a range of natural and seminatural habitats. A key question is how this expansion should be managed to reduce negative impacts on biodiversity. Focusing on the Llanos of Colombia, a mixed grassland–forest system identified as a priority zone for future oil palm development, we survey communities of ants, dung beetles, birds and herpetofauna occurring in oil palm plantations and the other principal form of agriculture in the region – improved cattle pasture – together with those of surrounding natural forests. We show that oil palm plantations have similar or higher species richness across all four taxonomic groups than improved pasture. For dung beetles, species richness in oil palm was equal to that of forest, whereas the other three taxa had highest species richness in forests. Hierarchical modelling of species occupancy probabilities indicated that oil palm plantations supported a higher proportion of species characteristic of forests than did cattle pastures. Across the bird community, occupancy probabilities within oil palm were positively influenced by increasing forest cover in a surrounding 250 m radius, whereas surrounding forest cover did not strongly influence the occurrence of other taxonomic groups in oil palm. Overall, our results suggest that the conversion of existing improved pastures to oil palm has limited negative impacts on biodiversity. As such, existing cattle pastures of the Colombian Llanos could offer a key opportunity to meet governmental targets for oil palm development without incurring significant biodiversity costs. Our results also highlight the value of preserving remnant forests within these agricultural landscapes, protecting high biodiversity and exporting avian ‘spill‐over’ effects into oil palm plantations.  相似文献

The catalytic cracking of waste cooking palm oil to biofuel was studied over different types of nano-crystalline zeolite catalysts in a fixed bed reactor. The effect of reaction temperature (400-500 °C), catalyst-to-oil ratio (6-14) and catalyst pore size of different nanocrystalline zeolites (0.54-0.80 nm) were studied over the conversion of waste cooking palm oil, yields of Organic Liquid Product (OLP) and gasoline fraction in the OLP following central composite design (CCD). The response surface methodology was used to determine the optimum value of the operating variables for maximum conversion as well as maximum yield of OLP and gasoline fraction, respectively. The optimum reaction temperature of 458 °C with oil/catalyst ratio=6 over the nanocrystalline zeolite Y with pore size of 0.67 nm gave 86.4 wt% oil conversion, 46.5 wt% OLP yield and 33.5 wt% gasoline fraction yield, respectively. The experimental results were in agreement with the simulated values within an experimental error of less than 5%.  相似文献

In Malaysia, there has been interest in the utilization of palm oil and oil palm biomass for the production of environmental friendly biofuels. A biorefinery based on palm oil and oil palm biomass for the production of biofuels has been proposed. The catalytic technology plays major role in the different processing stages in a biorefinery for the production of liquid as well as gaseous biofuels. There are number of challenges to find suitable catalytic technology to be used in a typical biorefinery. These challenges include (1) economic barriers, (2) catalysts that facilitate highly selective conversion of substrate to desired products and (3) the issues related to design, operation and control of catalytic reactor. Therefore, the catalytic technology is one of the critical factors that control the successful operation of biorefinery. There are number of catalytic processes in a biorefinery which convert the renewable feedstocks into the desired biofuels. These include biodiesel production from palm oil, catalytic cracking of palm oil for the production of biofuels, the production of hydrogen as well as syngas from biomass gasification, Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS) for the conversion of syngas into liquid fuels and upgrading of liquid/gas fuels obtained from liquefaction/pyrolysis of biomass. The selection of catalysts for these processes is essential in determining the product distribution (olefins, paraffins and oxygenated products). The integration of catalytic technology with compatible separation processes is a key challenge for biorefinery operation from the economic point of view. This paper focuses on different types of catalysts and their role in the catalytic processes for the production of biofuels in a typical palm oil and oil palm biomass-based biorefinery.  相似文献

For a hectare of oil palm plantation, about 21.63 tonnes of biomass comprising 20.43 % empty fruit bunches, 5.09 % palm kernel shells, 11.65 % oil palm trunks, 50.30 % oil palm fronds and 12.53 % palm pressed fibre is produced per year as wastes which keep raising many environmental concerns as most of them are incinerated and dumped at open sites. Oil palm wastes are found to contain phytochemicals which have anti-cancer, antioxidants and other vital biological activities. About 17–65 kg of carotenoids, 0.1–60 kg phenolic compounds, 0.6–39 kg sterols and 4.0–62 kg tocols could be extracted from these wastes which would not only boost the economy but also help improve human health and promote clean environments. This study assesses the phytochemistry of oil palm wastes and their pharmacological activities beneficial to the nutraceutical industry with the view of utilizing oil palm wastes for sustainable development.  相似文献

Microwave induced pyrolysis of oil palm biomass   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The purpose of this paper was to carry out microwave induced pyrolysis of oil palm biomass (shell and fibers) with the help of char as microwave absorber (MA). Rapid heating and yield of microwave pyrolysis products such as bio-oil, char, and gas was found to depend on the ratio of biomass to microwave absorber. Temperature profiles revealed the heating characteristics of the biomass materials which can rapidly heat-up to high temperature within seconds in presence of MA. Some characterization of pyrolysis products was also presented. The advantage of this technique includes substantial reduction in consumption of energy, time and cost in order to produce bio-oil from biomass materials. Large biomass particle size can be used directly in microwave heating, thus saving grinding as well as moisture removal cost. A synergistic effect was found in using MA with oil palm biomass.  相似文献

This study aimed to develop an optimal continuous procedure of lipase-catalyzes transesterification of waste cooking palm oil in a packed bed reactor to investigate the possibility of large scale production further. Response surface methodology (RSM) based on central composite rotatable design (CCRD) was used to optimize the two important reaction variables packed bed height (cm) and substrate flow rate(ml/min) for the transesterification of waste cooking palm oil in a continuous packed bed reactor. The optimum condition for the transesterification of waste cooking palm oil was as follows: 10.53 cm packed bed height and 0.57 ml/min substrate flow rate. The optimum predicted fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) yield was 80.3% and the actual value was 79%. The above results shows that the RSM study based on CCRD is adaptable for FAME yield studied for the current transesterification system. The effect of mass transfer in the packed bed reactor has also been studied. Models for FAME yield have been developed for cases of reaction control and mass transfer control. The results showed very good agreement compatibility between mass transfer model and the experimental results obtained from immobilized lipase packed bed reactor operation, showing that in this case the FAME yield was mass transfer controlled.  相似文献

Oil palm is one of the most rapidly expanding crops throughout the tropics, yet little is known about its impacts on Neotropical invertebrate biodiversity. Responses of insect assemblages to land conversion may substantially vary among taxa. We assessed geometrid and arctiine moth assemblages in a Costa Rican human dominated landscape, where oil palm plantations are now the second most common land cover. Moths were sampled during 6 months with automatic traps in the interior and margin of old-growth forests, young secondary forests and oil palm plantations in a 30 km2 area. Our results show that richness and diversity of both taxa were severely reduced in oil palm compared to all other habitats. Geometrid abundance was highest in forest interiors and lowest in oil palm, while arctiine numbers did not differ between habitats. Dominance was highest in oil palm plantations, where one arctiine species and one geometrid species accounted for over 40% of total abundance in each of their respective taxa. Species composition was distinct in oil palm and forest interior sites, and depicted a gradient of habitat disturbance in ordination space that was strongly related to vegetation diversity and structure. This study demonstrates that oil palm plantations are not a suitable habitat for these moth taxa. Whilst some arctiine species seem adapted to disturbed habitats, geometrids were more dependent on old-growth forests, showing higher bioindicator potential. In the face of accelerated oil palm expansion, conservation strategies should focus on protecting old-growth forest remnants, as well as increasing species diversity and structural complexity of degraded habitats.  相似文献

Fractionation, electroblotting and molecular hybridisation of nucleic acids extracted from tissue of African oil palm and coconut palm and some other monocotyledonous species, collected in several areas of the south-west Pacific region, demonstrated the presence of small nucleic acids with nucleotide sequences and secondary structure similar to coconut cadang-cadang viroid (CCCVd). The oil palms which contained CCCVd-related molecules showed orange leaf spots resembling those described for oil palm naturally infected with CCCVd in the Philippines, and also characteristic of a condition known as "genetic orange spotting" (GOS). We provide preliminary evidence that GOS is an infectious disorder caused by a viroid. The coconut palms did not show symptoms typical of cadang-cadang disease, but sometimes were chlorotic, stunted, or had a reduced yield. The possibility that the isolates represent variants of CCCVd is discussed. The data suggest that viroids with nucleotide sequences similar to CCCVd occur widely in palms and other monocotyledons outside the Philippines.  相似文献
