Mature and old growth trees of varying sapwood thickness were compared with regard to stem respiration. An increment core-based, laboratory method under controlled temperature was used to measure tissue-level respiration (termed respiratory potential) of ten different tree species. Bark (dead outer and live inner combined), sapwood, and heartwood thickness measurements were used to predict sapwood volume from stem diameter (including bark) for four of the ten species. These predictions of sapwood volume were used to scale respiratory potential to the main-bole level (excluding all branches). On the core level, species that maintained narrow sapwood (8–16% of bole radius) such as Pseudotusga menziesii, Taxus brevifolia, and Thuja plicata, had sapwood respiratory potentials in the lower bole that were 50% higher (P<0.05) than species with wide sapwood (>16% of bole radius), such as Abies amabilis, Pinus monticola, and Tsuga heterophylla. This pattern was not observed for inner bark respiratory potential, or for sapwood respiratory potential within the crown. On the main-bole level, respiratory potential per unit volume was inversely correlated to the live bole volumetric fraction (inner bark plus sapwood divided by whole bole volume) (Adj. R2=0.6). Specifically, tree species with 18–20% of the main bole alive potentially respired 1.3–3 times more per unit live bole volume than species with over 40%, suggesting that the live bole was less metabolically active in tree species that maintained large volumes of sapwood.  相似文献

Spongipellis litschaueri, described in 1931 from Austria, is often synonymised with S. delectans in current literature. Morphological and molecular approaches were applied to revise the taxonomic position of this species. The basidiospore dimensions and DNA sequences confirmed differences between S. delectans and S. litschaueri, thus the latter should be kept as a distinct species. However, the relationship between S. litschaueri and its North American kin S. unicolor is complex. Although most of the examined specimens of S. unicolor differ significantly from S. litschaueri in morphological and molecular characters, one American isolate showed markedly high DNA sequence similarity to the European species. Moreover, specimens of S. unicolor from the more or less western USA have larger basidiospores than the others and the respective values are similar to S. litschaueri. Thereby, S. unicolor may split in two taxa where one is closely related to S. litschaueri. Additionally, DNA sequences of a large subunit of the nuclear ribosomal RNA gene were analysed to elucidate the position of Spongipellis within the Polyporales. The results revealed unexpected polyphyly when the generic type S. spumeus fell into a separate lineage from S. delectans, S. litschaueri, S. pachyodon, and S. unicolor. In addition, Tyromyces fissilis occasionally kept in Spongipellis is not related to any species of the genus nor to Tyromyces chioneus, the generic type of Tyromyces. An identification key of European Spongipellis species is provided.  相似文献

Heartwood and sapwood development in maritime pine (Pinus pinaster Ait.) is reported based on 35 trees randomly sampled in four sites in Portugal. It was possible to model the number of heartwood rings with cambial age. The heartwood initiation age was estimated to be 13 years and the rate of sapwood transformation into heartwood was 0.5 and 0.7 rings year–1 for ages below and above 55 years, respectively. Reconstruction of heartwood volume inside the tree stem was made by visual identification by image analysis in longitudinal boards along the sawn surfaces. This volume was integrated into the 3D models of logs and stems developed for this species representing the external shape and internal knots. Heartwood either follows the stem profile or shows a maximum value at 3.8 m in height, on average, while sapwood width is greater at the stem base and after 3 m remains almost constant up the stem. Up to 50% of tree height heartwood represents 17% of stem volume, in 83-year-old trees and 12–13% in 42 to 55-year-old trees. Tree variables such as stem diameter, DBH and tree total height were found to correlate significantly with the heartwood content.  相似文献

The mechanism of heartwood formation in Cryptomeria japonica D. Don has long been studied since heartwood formation is a fundamental physiological feature of trees. In this study, the water distribution in the xylem of C. japonica was investigated at the cellular level to reveal the role of water distribution in the xylem during heartwood formation. Samples were taken from different heights of each trunk, in which the phases of heartwood formation differed. These were designated as SIH, which consisted of sapwood, intermediate wood, and heartwood; SI, which consisted of sapwood and intermediate wood but no heartwood; and S-all, which consisted entirely of sapwood. Cryo-scanning electron microscopic observations of the heartwood-formed (SIH) and non-heartwood-formed (SI and S-all) xylem revealed different patterns of water distribution changes in tracheids between the latewood and earlywood. In the latewood, almost all tracheids were filled with water in all areas from the sapwood to the heartwood (98–100% of tracheids had water in their lumina). In the earlywood, however, the water distribution differed between the sapwood (95–99%), intermediate wood (7–12%), and heartwood (4–100%). Many of the tracheids in the xylem, where the sapwood changed to intermediate wood lost water. In the heartwood, some tracheids remained empty, while others were refilled with water. These results suggest that the water distribution changes in individual tracheids are closely related to heartwood formation. Water loss from tracheids may be an important factor inducing heartwood formation in the xylem of C. japonica.  相似文献

Invasive plants have caused great economic losses and environmental problems worldwide. Eupatorium adenophorum is one of the most invasive weeds in China. To better understand its invasive mechanisms, in the present paper, the microbial communities of healthy and diseased leaves of E. adenophorum were obtained using both culture-independent and -dependent methods and their diversities were compared. The bacteria obtained from culture-independent method belong to Proteobacteria (95.8%), Actinobacteria (2.1%), and Firmicutes (2.1%) and fungi belong to Ascomycota (65.2%) and Basidiomycota (34.8%). Very few overlapped microbial species were found by culture-dependent and -independent methods. Healthy leaves display higher bacterial diversity than diseased leaves. Phylogenetic structures are very different between healthy and diseased phyllosphere microbial communities. Bacteria close to Acinetobacter and Pseudomonas were dominant on healthy leaves, whereas those close to Shigella were dominant on diseased leaves. 52.9% of fungal clones from healthy leaves were Ustilaginomycetes, close to Rhodotorula phylloplana and uncultured basidomycete; by contrast, 60% of clones from diseased leaves were Lecanoromycetes, close to Umbilicaria muehlenbergii. No bacteria but four fungal strains phylogenetically close to Myrothecium sp. and Alternaria alternate were pathogenic to seedlings and detached leaves of the invasive plant. Therefore, this plant may be resistant to pathogens from bacteria but not fungi in its introduced range.  相似文献

The amounts of free sterols, steryl esters and lipid phosphorus were determined in the sapwood and heartwood of mature, and in the outer and inner sapwood of young Pinus sylvestris trees. In the mature trees (up to 70 years old) the heartwood contains significantly higher amounts of free sterols than the sapwood. No radial gradient can be demonstrated in the amounts of steryl esters. Lipids extracted from the sapwood contain higher amounts of phosphorus than those from the heartwood. Stems of young Pinus sylvestris trees (up to 13 years old) show in the inner sapwood higher amounts of both free sterols and steryl esters than the peripheral younger wood zone. The inner sapwood of the young stems shows slightly higher amounts of lipid phosphorus than the outer sapwood. The results indicate that Pinus sylvestris accumulates both free sterols and steryl esters in the stems at a very early stage of the life cycle. Sterol accumulation in the innermost parts of the stems seems not to depend on heartwood formation.  相似文献

American beech (Fagus grandifolia) is an abundant, underutilized tree in certain areas of North America, and methods to increase its market value are of considerable interest. This research utilized pigment-producing fungi to induce color in American beech to potentially establish its use as a decorative wood. Wood samples were inoculated with Trametes versicolor, Xylaria polymorpha, Inonotus hispidus, and Arthrographis cuboidea to induce fungal pigmentation. Black pigmentation (T. versicolor, X. polymorpha, I. hispidus) was sporadic, occurred primarily on the surfaces of the heartwood, but not internally. Pink pigmentation (A. cuboidea) occurred throughout all of the tested beech samples, but was difficult to see in the heartwood due to the darker color of the wood. To increase the visibility of the pink stain, beech blocks were pretreated with T. versicolor for 4 weeks before being inoculated with A. cuboidea. This method significantly increased the saturation of the pink stain on both beech heartwood and sapwood, creating coloration similar to that found on sugar maple. This value-adding process should be particularly effective for small-scale wood pigmentation, and should help establish a market for this currently underutilized wood species.  相似文献

European beech (Fagus sylvatica) facultatively develops red heartwood, which decreases the value of its timber and is difficult to predict in standing trees. According to current theory, the absence of oxygen prevents discolouration in the wood of uninjured trees, and red heartwood forms when oxygen enters the stem through injuries. This theory requires that oxygen concentrations in uncoloured wood are generally very low, and that oxygen can diffuse several metres in the centre of a stem, bypassing the respiring sapwood. Oxygen concentrations measured at different depth in stems with and without red heartwood varied strongly and were generally depleted relative to the air, but rarely close to 0. Concentrations in red heartwood were somewhat, though not significantly higher than in the inner wood of trees without red heartwood. The colour of wood exposed to different oxygen concentrations changed strongly at higher concentrations, but concentrations in standing stems are generally high enough for discolouration. Model calculations suggested that only massive injuries that kill most sapwood at an entry point would allow high amounts of oxygen to penetrate to the core, in which case it may diffuse several metres in the axial direction without being consumed by respiring sapwood. However, given the relatively high diffusion in axial direction, oxygen should spread within a few days, not several years as the development of red heartwood appears to take. These measurements and calculations suggested that, while oxygen is required for beech red heartwood discoloration, it is not the only factor involved but could act by affecting the activity of micro-organisms.  相似文献

Time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS) was applied to the investigation of heartwood extractives in Sugi (Cryptomeria japonica). Sugi heartwood tissue generated secondary ions that were not produced from sapwood tissue by TOF-SIMS. Among the peculiar ions generated from heartwood, two positive ions of m/z 285 and 301 were remarkable due to their appearance in a larger mass range and with a high intensity. These two ions were not generated from heartwood tissue preextracted with n-hexane, and the n-hexane extract of Sugi heartwood produced both ions. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry of the n-hexane extract demonstrated that ferruginol, a diterpene phenol, the molecular weight of which is 286, constituted one of the predominant constituents of the extract. Authentic ferruginol also generated both ions by TOF-SIMS. The molecular formula of the m/z 285 ion generated from Sugi heartwood tissue was estimated to be C20H29O, which corresponds well with that of ferruginol, i.e. C20H30O, by peak identification. All these results strongly suggest that the m/z 285 ion generated from Sugi heartwood tissue originated significantly from ferruginol in Sugi heartwood. By TOF-SIMS imaging, the m/z 285 ion was detected uniformly in the tracheid cell walls, in the cell walls of the axial parenchyma cells and ray parenchyma cells, and also inside these parenchyma cells. These results indicate that ferruginol was distributed almost evenly in Sugi heartwood tissue.  相似文献

Extractable materials from some timber species have been identified which prevent wood decay; however, little has been reported on the effect(s) of such materials against mould species that colonize timber. With increasing interest in the use of Trichoderma species, both as agents of permeability enhancement and biological control, more information is required on how chemical components within fresh and processed timber influence growth of Trichoderma. Fresh and dried samples of Scots pine and Sitka spruce sapwood and heartwood were leached in a Soxhlet apparatus and the resulting extract was combined with malt extract agar and inoculated with Trichoderma. Trichoderma isolates were inhibited to varying degrees by extractives removed from fresh and dried heartwood of the two timbers. Growth on sapwood extractives, however, showed a lesser degree of inhibition. The implications of the results for applications of Trichoderma in timber are discussed.  相似文献

A culture-independent nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technique was used to investigate the diversity of actinobacteria communities associated with the sponges Hymeniacidon perleve and Sponge sp. The phylogenetic affiliation of sponge-derived actinobacteria was then assessed by 16S rRNA sequencing of cloned DNA fragments. A total of 196 positive clones were screened by restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis; 48 unique operational taxonomic units (OTUs) were selected for sequencing. Rarefaction analysis indicated that the clone libraries represented 93% and 94% of the total estimated diversity for the two species, respectively. Phylogenetic analysis of sequence data revealed representatives of various phylogenetic divisions, which were related to the following ten actinobacterial genera: Acidimicrobium, Corynebacterium, Propionibacterium, Actinomyces, Micrococcus, Microbacterium, Streptomyces, Mycobacterium, Cellulosimicrobium, Sporichthya, and unidentified actinobacterial clones. A sponge-specific, previously uncultured actinobacteria community grouped within the subclass Acidimicrobidae was discovered from both H. perleve and Sponge sp. Sequences belonging to Acidimicrobium in the H. perleve and the Sponge sp. clone libraries represented 33% and 24% of the clones, respectively. In the Sponge sp. clone library Mycobacterium dominated, accounting for 70% of all clones. The presence of Acidimicrobium and mycobacteria within two sponges can lay the groundwork for attempts to culture these interesting bacteria for industrial applications.  相似文献

Five new species of Clavulina (Clavulinaceae, Cantharellales, Basidiomycota) are described from the Pakaraima Mountains of Guyana, occurring in rain forests dominated by the ectomycorrhizal tree Dicymbe corymbosa (Caesalpiniaceae). These clavarioid fungi have simple (i.e., unbranching) basidiomata, which is a relatively uncommon phenotypic feature for the genus Clavulina. Macromorphological, micromorphological, and habitat data are provided for each taxon, and nuclear ribosomal DNA sequences of the 28S subunit and internal transcribed spacer region were obtained for each holotype collection.  相似文献

A large-scale field experiment on the drying behavior of Norway Spruce (Picea abies Karst.) and Sweet Chestnut (Castanea sativa Mill.) in relation to the felling date was conducted over a period of 24 weeks in order to investigate the existence of variations linked to lunar rhythms, which are mentioned as having a role in many traditional forestry practices. The measured criteria were the water loss from fresh to dry state, the shrinkage linked to this water loss, and the relative density (ratio between the dry density and the initial fresh density) for both sapwood and heartwood in Picea and heartwood in Castanea. In addition to seasonal trends, slight but significant variations with lunar periodicities (both synodic and sidereal; to a much lesser extent tropic) characterize the three investigated criteria. These lunar rhythmicities occur in both Picea and Castanea, in heartwood and sapwood. These results raise new questions and perspectives about a rhythmic character of the wood–water relation.  相似文献

The susceptibility of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) sap- and heartwood against the wood decaying brown-rot fungus (Coniophora puteana) was investigated after long-term forest fertilization at three different sites in central Finland. Different wood properties: wood extractives, wood chemistry, and wood anatomy were used to explain sap- and heartwood decay. Scots pine sapwood was more susceptible to decay than its heartwood. In one site, sapwood seemed to be more resistant to wood decay after forest fertilization whereas the susceptibility of heartwood increased. Significant changes in the sapwood chemistry were found between treatment and sites, however, no relationship between wood chemistry and wood decay was observed in the factor analysis. The results of this study show that there was an inconsistent relationship between decay susceptibility and fertilization and the measured physical and chemical attributes of the wood were not consistently correlated with the decay rate.  相似文献

The formation and vertical distribution of sapwood and heartwood were studied with a 45-year-old Cryptomeria japonica D. Don. The tree was grown at a plantation with 1.5 m × 3.0 m spacing near Miao-Li, Taiwan and was felled on 27 February 1992. The thickness of sapwood and heartwood was expressed by a ring count and a linear measurement. The east-west (E-W) wood strips were collected from 0.3 m above ground upwards to the top of the tree at 2.5 m intervals. The sapwood thicknesses from the base to the 10.3 m tree level height are around 20–22 growth rings and 42±2 mm. At the top of the tree, the sapwood thickness is narrower. The heartwood, which decreases in thickness with increasing tree level heights is not found at the top of the tree. The heartwood appears as a conical shape in the tree trunk. There is no statistical difference in sapwood/heartwood thickness between E-W aspects. Tree level heights and the tree level age were found to be important parameters in determining the thickness of sapwood/heartwood.  相似文献

Synodontis denticulatus sp. nov. is an endemic from the middle Lufira Basin and its associated tributaries and lakes. The species shows close morphological resemblance to Synodontis greshoffi and Synodontis unicolor, which are widespread Congo Basin and Bangweulu-Mweru endemic species, respectively. However, it differs from both S. greshoffi and S. unicolor by its non-villous skin (v. villous skin), strong and numerous serrations on the posterior margin of the dorsal spine (v. weak and fewer serrations), weak and few serrations on the posterior margin of the pectoral spine (v. strong and numerous serrations), relatively short maxillary barbels (v. long) and its small maximum standard length (89.1 mm LS v. 148.0 and 190.7 mm LS respectively). A DNA barcoding study (coI, mtDNA) revealed that S. denticulatus forms a distinct genetic clade with a genetic distance of 2.18% with S. greshoffi and 0.84% with S. unicolor. Synodontis denticulatus is caught regularly and abundantly as a by-catch in the gillnet fisheries in the middle Lufira lakes. Owing to its small overall size and large bony head, the species has usually no real commercial value but is an important food fish for the fishermen's families.  相似文献

Radial distribution of soluble phenolics was investigated at different heights in stems of Juglans nigra, J. regia and hybrids J. nigra 23 × J. regia. Four major phenolic compounds were studied: hydrojuglone glucoside (HJG), quercitrin (QUER) and two unknown compounds characterized as two ellagic acid derivatives E1 and E2. HJG and E1 content increased gradually in the sapwood, peaked in the sapwood-heartwood transition zone, and decreased drastically in the heartwood. QUER was accumulated preferentially around the transition zone, and its content was relatively low in the outer part of the sapwood and in the inner part of the heartwood. E2 content was low in the sapwood and increased in the heartwood. The heartwood formation was marked by the accumulation of new soluble compounds. The relationship between wood extractives and wood colour were evaluated and discussed. HJG was considered to be a major precursor of heartwood colour providing chromophores through hydrolysis (deglucosylation), oxidation and polymerization processes. We analysed sapwood characteristics in 344 pedunculate oak (Quercus robur L.) samples from the south-western part of the Pannonian Basin. The samples came from 13 sites, located in Slovenia, Croatia and Serbia. The trees had an average of 13.3 sapwood rings, with a minimum of 5 and maximum of 32. Fifteen log-log linear regression models were employed to assess the statistical relationship between sapwood and heartwood variables. The number of sapwood rings (NSW), which is usually needed in dendroarchaeological dating, is significantly related to the number of heartwood rings (NHW), heartwood width (WHW) and heartwood growth rate (GHW). Older and more slowly growing trees had a higher average number of sapwood rings. Using NHW and WHW, we employed an additional multiple regression model and calculated coefficients for NSW predictions for real-world dendroarchaeological dating from the south-western part of the Pannonian Basin.  相似文献
