In view of urbanization trends coupled with climate‐change challenges, it is increasingly important to establish less‐harmful means of urban living. To date, urban metabolism (UM) studies have quantified the aggregate material and energy flows into and out of cities and, further, have identified how consumer activity causes these flows. However, little attention has been paid to the networks of conversion processes that link consumer end‐use demands to aggregate metabolic flows. Here, we conduct a systematic literature search to assemble a database of 202 urban energy, water, and waste management processes. We show how the database can help planners and policy makers choose the preferred process to meet a specific resource management need; identify synergies between energy, water, and waste management processes; and compute optimal networks of processes to meet an area's consumer demand at minimum environmental cost. We make our database publicly available under an open‐source license and discuss the possibilities for how it might be used alongside other industrial ecology data sets to enhance research opportunities. This will encourage more holistic UM analyses, which appreciate how both consumer activity and the engineered urban system work together to influence aggregate metabolic flows and thus support efforts to make cities more sustainable.  相似文献

The functional response is a fundamental model of the relationship between consumer intake rate and resource abundance. The random walk is a fundamental model of animal movement and is well approximated by simple diffusion. Both models are central to our understanding of numerous ecological processes but are rarely linked in ecological theory. To derive a synthetic model, we draw on the common logical premise underlying these models and show how the diffusion and consumption rates of consumers depend on elementary attributes of naturally occurring consumer-resource interactions: the abundance, spatial aggregation, and traveling speed of resources as well as consumer handling time and directional persistence. We show that resource aggregation may lead to increased consumer diffusion and, in the case of mobile resources, reduced consumption rate. Resource-dependent movement patterns have traditionally been attributed to area-restricted search, reflecting adaptive decision making by the consumer. Our synthesis provides a simple alternative hypothesis that such patterns could also arise as a by-product of statistical movement mechanics.  相似文献

Different systems for habitual versus goal-directed control are thought to underlie human decision-making. Working memory is known to shape these decision-making systems and their interplay, and is known to support goal-directed decision making even under stress. Here, we investigated if and how decision systems are differentially influenced by breaks filled with diverse everyday life activities known to modulate working memory performance. We used a within-subject design where young adults listened to music and played a video game during breaks interleaved with trials of a sequential two-step Markov decision task, designed to assess habitual as well as goal-directed decision making. Based on a neurocomputational model of task performance, we observed that for individuals with a rather limited working memory capacity video gaming as compared to music reduced reliance on the goal-directed decision-making system, while a rather large working memory capacity prevented such a decline. Our findings suggest differential effects of everyday activities on key decision-making processes.  相似文献

Ecological research has focused on understanding how changes in consumer abundance affects community structure and ecosystem processes. However, there is increasing evidence that evolutionary changes in consumers can also alter community structure and ecosystem processes. Typically, the effects of consumer phenotype on communities and ecosystem processes are measured as net effects that integrate numerous ecological pathways. Here, we analyze new data from experimental manipulations of Trinidadian guppy Poecilia reticulata presence, density and phenotype to examine how effects on the algal community cause changes in gross‐primary production (GPP). We combine analytical tools borrowed from path analysis with experimental exclosures in mesocosms to separate the ecological and evolutionary effects of guppies into direct and indirect components. We show that the evolutionary effects of guppy phenotype act through different ecological pathways than the effects of guppy presence and density on GPP. As reported in previous studies that used a different measure of algal biomass, adding guppies and doubling their densities decreased algal biovolume through direct effects. In contrast to these previously reported results, exchanging guppy phenotypes that live without predators for phenotypes that live with predators did not affect algal biovolume. Instead, guppies from populations that live with predators increased the diversity of algal species and increased GPP compared to guppies that live without predators. These changes in the algal community were driven primarily by guppy phenotypes that live with predators—algal communities in mesocosms without fish were similar to those with guppies from predator‐free locations, but both were different from mesocosms with guppies from populations that live with predators. Changes in the algal community were driven directly by differences in foraging behavior between the two consumer phenotypes. We reconcile these results with our previous findings, thereby enhancing our understanding of the relationship between ecological and evolutionary processes.  相似文献

The mechanisms by which aging and other processes can affect the structure and function of brain networks are important to understanding normal age-related cognitive decline. Advancing age is known to be associated with various disease processes, including clinically asymptomatic vascular and inflammation processes that contribute to white matter structural alteration and potential injury. The effects of these processes on the function of distributed cognitive networks, however, are poorly understood. We hypothesized that the extent of magnetic resonance imaging white matter hyperintensities would be associated with visual attentional control in healthy aging, measured using a functional magnetic resonance imaging search task. We assessed cognitively healthy older adults with search tasks indexing processing speed and attentional control. Expanding upon previous research, older adults demonstrate activation across a frontal-parietal attentional control network. Further, greater white matter hyperintensity volume was associated with increased activation of a frontal network node independent of chronological age. Also consistent with previous research, greater white matter hyperintensity volume was associated with anatomically specific reductions in functional magnetic resonance imaging functional connectivity during search among attentional control regions. White matter hyperintensities may lead to subtle attentional network dysfunction, potentially through impaired frontal-parietal and frontal interhemispheric connectivity, suggesting that clinically silent white matter biomarkers of vascular and inflammatory injury can contribute to differences in search performance and brain function in aging, and likely contribute to advanced age-related impairments in cognitive control.  相似文献

Regular protein synthesis is a needful and complex task for a healthy cell. Improper folding leads to the deposition of misfolded proteins in cells. Autophagy and ubiquitin–proteasome system (UPS) are the conserved intracellular degradation processes of eukaryotic cells. How exactly these two pathways cross talk to each other is unclear. We do not know how the impairment of autophagy or UPS leads to the disturbance in cellular homeostasis and contribute into cellular aging and neurodegeneration. Here in this review, we will focus on the functional interconnections of autophagy and UPS, and why their loss of function results in abnormal aggregation of misfolded proteotoxic species in cells. Finally, we enumerate and discuss the crucial inducers of autophagy pathways and elaborate their intersection steps, which have been considered to be advantageous in aging linked with the abnormal protein aggregation. The final goal of this review is to improve our current understanding about multifaceted properties and interactions of autophagy and UPS, which may provide new insights to identify novel therapeutic strategies for aging and neurodegenerative diseases.  相似文献

This article presents an empirical analysis of the impact of sustainability information on consumer purchase intentions and how this influence varies by issue (health, environment, and social responsibility), product category, type of consumer, and type of information. We assess over 40,000 online purchase interactions on the website GoodGuide.com and find a significant impact of certain types of sustainability information on purchase intentions, varying across different types of consumers, issues, and product categories. Health ratings in particular showed the strongest effects. Direct users—those who intentionally sought out sustainability information—were most strongly influenced by sustainability information, with an average purchase intention rate increase of 1.15 percentage points for each point increase in overall product score, reported on a zero to ten scale. However, sustainability information had, on average, no impact on nondirect users, demonstrating that simply providing more or better information on sustainability issues will likely have limited impact on changing mainstream consumer behavior unless it is designed to connect into existing decision‐making processes.  相似文献

Parsing a mental operation into components, characterizing the parallel or serial nature of this flow, and understanding what each process ultimately contributes to response time are fundamental questions in cognitive neuroscience. Here we show how a simple theoretical model leads to an extended set of predictions concerning the distribution of response time and its alteration by simultaneous performance of another task. The model provides a synthesis of psychological refractory period and random-walk models of response time. It merely assumes that a task consists of three consecutive stages—perception, decision based on noisy integration of evidence, and response—and that the perceptual and motor stages can operate simultaneously with stages of another task, while the central decision process constitutes a bottleneck. We designed a number-comparison task that provided a thorough test of the model by allowing independent variations in number notation, numerical distance, response complexity, and temporal asynchrony relative to an interfering probe task of tone discrimination. The results revealed a parsing of the comparison task in which each variable affects only one stage. Numerical distance affects the integration process, which is the only step that cannot proceed in parallel and has a major contribution to response time variability. The other stages, mapping the numeral to an internal quantity and executing the motor response, can be carried out in parallel with another task. Changing the duration of these processes has no significant effect on the variance.  相似文献

BackgroundThe changes in electroencephalogram (EEG) signals that reflect the changes in physiological structure, cognitive functions, and activities have been observed in healthy aging adults. It is unknown that when the brain aging initiates and whether these age-related alterations can be associated with incipient neurodegenerative diseases in healthy elderly individuals.Materials and methodsWe employed feature extraction and classification methods to classify and compare the EEG signals of middle-aged and elderly age groups. This study included 20 healthy middle-aged and 20 healthy elderly subjects. The EEG signals were recorded during a resting state (eyes-open and eyes-closed) and during a working memory (WM) task using eight electrodes. The minimum redundancy maximum relevance technique was employed in the selection of the optimal feature. Four classification methods, including decision tree, support vector machine, Naïve Bayes, and K-nearest neighbor, were used to distinguish the elderly age group from the middle-aged group based on their EEG signals.ResultsIn the resting state, a good correlation was observed among absolute power delta and theta bands and aging, whereas between beta absolute power and aging, a WM task correlation was observed. The results also indicated that the mean frequency and absolute power might be useful for the prediction and classification of EEG signals in aging individuals. Furthermore, the use of the decision tree method in a WM task state distinguished the elderly group from the middle-aged group with an accuracy of 87.5%.ConclusionsWorking memory could play a vital role in the optimization of classification of EEG signals in aging and discrimination of age-related issues associated with neurodegeneration.  相似文献

Mitochondria play crucial roles in programmed cell death and aging. Different stimuli activate distinct mitochondrion-dependent cell death pathways, and aging is associated with a progressive increase in mitochondrial damage, culminating in oxidative stress and cellular dysfunction. Mitochondria are highly dynamic organelles that constantly fuse and divide, forming either interconnected mitochondrial networks or separated fragmented mitochondria. These processes are believed to provide a mitochondrial quality control system and enable an effective adaptation of the mitochondrial compartment to the metabolic needs of the cell. The baker's yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, is an established model for programmed cell death and aging research. The present review summarizes how mitochondrial morphology is altered on induction of cell death or on aging and how this correlates with the induction of different cell death pathways in yeast. We highlight the roles of the components of the mitochondrial fusion and fission machinery that affect and regulate cell death and aging.  相似文献

Applying scientific knowledge to confront societal challenges is a difficult task, an issue known as the science–practice gap. In Ecology and Conservation, scientific evidence has been seldom used directly to support decision‐making, despite calls for an increasing role of ecological science in developing solutions for a sustainable future. To date, multiple causes of the science–practice gap and diverse approaches to link science and practice in Ecology and Conservation have been proposed. To foster a transparent debate and broaden our understanding of the difficulties of using scientific knowledge, we reviewed the perceived causes of the science–practice gap, aiming to: (i) identify the perspectives of ecologists and conservation scientists on this problem, (ii) evaluate the predominance of these perspectives over time and across journals, and (iii) assess them in light of disciplines studying the role of science in decision‐making. We based our review on 1563 sentences describing causes of the science–practice gap extracted from 122 articles and on discussions with eight scientists on how to classify these sentences. The resulting process‐based framework describes three distinct perspectives on the relevant processes, knowledge and actors in the science–practice interface. The most common perspective assumes only scientific knowledge should support practice, perceiving a one‐way knowledge flow from science to practice and recognizing flaws in knowledge generation, communication, and/or use. The second assumes that both scientists and decision‐makers should contribute to support practice, perceiving a two‐way knowledge flow between science and practice through joint knowledge‐production/integration processes, which, for several reasons, are perceived to occur infrequently. The last perspective was very rare, and assumes scientists should put their results into practice, but they rarely do. Some causes (e.g. cultural differences between scientists and decision‐makers) are shared with other disciplines, while others seem specific to Ecology and Conservation (e.g. inadequate research scales). All identified causes require one of three general types of solutions, depending on whether the causal factor can (e.g. inadequate research questions) or cannot (e.g. scientific uncertainty) be changed, or if misconceptions (e.g. undervaluing abstract knowledge) should be solved. The unchanged predominance of the one‐way perspective over time may be associated with the prestige of evidence‐based conservation and suggests that debates in Ecology and Conservation lag behind trends in other disciplines towards bidirectional views ascribing larger roles to decision‐makers. In turn, the two‐way perspective seems primarily restricted to research traditions historically isolated from mainstream conservation biology. All perspectives represented superficial views of decision‐making by not accounting for limits to human rationality, complexity of decision‐making contexts, fuzzy science–practice boundaries, ambiguity brought about by science, and different types of knowledge use. However, joint knowledge‐production processes from the two‐way perspective can potentially allow for democratic decision‐making processes, explicit discussions of values and multiple types of science use. To broaden our understanding of the interface and foster productive science–practice linkages, we argue for dialogue among different research traditions within Ecology and Conservation, joint knowledge‐production processes between scientists and decision‐makers and interdisciplinarity across Ecology, Conservation and Political Science in both research and education.  相似文献

Sex differences in aging occur in many animal species, and they include sex differences in lifespan, in the onset and progression of age‐associated decline, and in physiological and molecular markers of aging. Sex differences in aging vary greatly across the animal kingdom. For example, there are species with longer‐lived females, species where males live longer, and species lacking sex differences in lifespan. The underlying causes of sex differences in aging remain mostly unknown. Currently, we do not understand the molecular drivers of sex differences in aging, or whether they are related to the accepted hallmarks or pillars of aging or linked to other well‐characterized processes. In particular, understanding the role of sex‐determination mechanisms and sex differences in aging is relatively understudied. Here, we take a comparative, interdisciplinary approach to explore various hypotheses about how sex differences in aging arise. We discuss genomic, morphological, and environmental differences between the sexes and how these relate to sex differences in aging. Finally, we present some suggestions for future research in this area and provide recommendations for promising experimental designs.  相似文献

Recent studies combining psychophysical and neurophysiological experiments in behaving monkeys have provided new insights into how several cortical areas integrate efforts to solve a vibrotactile discrimination task. In particular, these studies have addressed how neural codes are related to perception, working memory and decision making in this model. The primary somatosensory cortex drives higher cortical areas where past and current sensory information are combined, such that a comparison of the two evolves into a behavioural decision. These and other observations in visual tasks indicate that decisions emerge from highly-distributed processes in which the details of a scheduled motor plan are gradually specified by sensory information.  相似文献

Restricting the food intake of rodents extends the median length of life and the maximum life-span. It also retards most age-associated physiologic change and age-associated diseases. Our research indicates that the ability to retard disease processes is not the major reason for the extension of life-span or for the retardation of age change in most physiologic systems. Rather, it appears that most of the actions of food restriction are due to its ability to slow the primary aging processes. We found this action to relate to the restriction of calories rather than specific nutrients (e.g., protein or fat or minerals). Our findings point to the reduction in caloric intake per rat rather than per gram lean body mass as the basis of the retardation of aging processes by food restriction. The challenge is to learn how caloric intake per rat is coupled to the aging processes. We are currently focusing on the possibility that neural and endocrine mechanisms are involved. Our preliminary findings point to the likelihood of an involvement of the insulin-glucose system.  相似文献

One of the original hypotheses of organismal longevity posits that aging is the natural result of entropy on the cells, tissues, and organs of the animal—a slow, inexorable slide into nonfunctionality caused by stochastic degradation of its parts. We now have evidence that aging is instead at least in part genetically regulated. Many mutations have been discovered to extend lifespan in organisms of all complexities, from yeast to mammals. The study of metazoan model organisms, such as Caenorhabditis elegans, has been instrumental in understanding the role of genetics in the cell biology of aging. Longevity mutants across the spectrum of model organisms demonstrate that rates of aging are regulated through genetic control of cellular processes. The regulation and subsequent breakdown of cellular processes represent a programmatic decision by the cell to either continue or abandon maintenance procedures with age. Our understanding of cell biological processes involved in regulating aging have been particularly informed by longevity mutants and treatments, such as reduced insulin/IGF-1 signaling and dietary restriction, which are critical in determining the distinction between causes of and responses to aging and have revealed a set of downstream targets that participate in a range of cell biological activities. Here we briefly review some of these important cellular processes.  相似文献

Hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) are the source for the life-long supply of functional cells in peripheral blood while they simultaneously maintain their own reserve pool. However, there is accumulating evidence that HSCs are themselves subject to quantitative and qualitative exhaustion. Although several processes linked to mitotic activity can potentially account for the observed aging phenomena (e.g., DNA damage, telomere shortening, epigenetic modification), a precise understanding of HSC exhaustion is still missing. It is particularly unclear how individual aging processes on the single-cell level translate on the phenotypic level of the overall tissue and whether there is a functional implication of an age-structured HSC population. We address these issues by applying a novel mathematical model of HSC organization in which division-specific, cumulative alterations of stem cell quality determine the phenotypic and functional appearance of the overall cell population. Adapting the model to a number of basic experimental findings, we quantify the level of additional heterogeneity that is introduced by a population of individually aging cells. Based on this model, we are able to conclude that division-dependent processes of cellular aging explain a wide range of phenomena on HSC exhaustion and that HSC aging needs to be considered as a highly heterogeneous process. We furthermore report that functional heterogeneity between young and old HSCs appears closely similar to the phenomena described for long- and short-term repopulating cells. We speculate whether differential, division-coupled stem cell aging introduces an intra-animal variability that also accounts for heterogeneity with respect to the repopulation ability of HSCs.  相似文献
