An epidemic of aseptic meningitis caused by human echovirus 9 (E-9) occurred in the summer of 1997 in northern Kyushu, Japan. Sequences of genome position 2504-3358, which encoded a part of VP1, of the nine isolated viruses were determined. An RGD motif and B-C loop were found in all. They were almost identical and closely related to the virulent strain Barty.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: It is unclear whether or not the CSF cytokine profiles in viral meningitis differ with the kind of causative virus. METHODS: We measured the concentrations of interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), interleukin-2 (IL-2), IL-4, IL-6, and IL-10 in CSF during the acute stage in 15 children with mumps meningitis (MM), and 34 with echovirus type 30 meningitis (EM). RESULTS: The CSF IFN-gamma, IL-2, IL-6, and IL-10 levels were elevated in MM, and the CSF IFN-gamma, IL-2, and IL-6 levels were elevated in EM. The CSF IFN-gamma, IL-2, and IL-10 levels in MM were significantly higher than those in EM (p<0.0001, p<0.0001, and p<0.0001, respectively). The CSF IL-6 levels in EM were significantly higher than those in MM (p=0.0255). The CSF TNF-alpha and IL-4 levels were not elevated in MM or EM. In MM, the IL-6 level was correlated with the IL-2 and IL-10 levels in CSF (p=0.0347 and p=0.0120, respectively). In EM, the IFN-gamma level was correlated with the IL-10 level in CSF (p=0.0002). CONCLUSION: CSF cytokine profiles in MM were different from those in EM. Therefore, it is likely that the pathogenesis of MM is different from that of EM.  相似文献

Summary Three patients with aseptic meningitis and two patients with scarlet fever were subjected to chromosome analysis in cultured leucocytes. Information was obtained that leucocytes of the aseptic meningitis patients exhibit random and non-specific chromosome aberrations significantly higher in frequency than the control series from scarlet fever patients. The most common type of the aberration observed was a single chromatid break including a full break in one chromatid. Isochromatid-type breaks, chromatid- and chromosome-type interchanges and acentric fragments were observed less frequently.Contribution No. 641 from the Zoological Institute, Hokkaido University, Sapporo, Japan. The conjunctivitis produced by Neisseria gonorrhoeae is the less frequently reported clinical form of gonococcal infection. We aim to phenotypically characterize N. gonorrhoeae isolated from conjunctivae sites. A total of six cases of this disease were notified in the Camagüey province, Cuba. All the strains isolated were penicillin-producing, showed the serogroup WI and exhibited the same antimicrobial susceptibility pattern and plasmid profile (2.6-3. 2-24.5). The results contribute to the characterization of N. gonorrhoeae strains circulating in our environment.  相似文献

Previous studies have investigated the potential atherogenicity and thrombogenicity of triglyceride-rich lipoprotein (TRL) remnants by isolating them from plasma within a remnant-like particle (RLP) fraction, using an immunoaffinity gel containing specific anti-apoB-100 and anti-apoA-I antibodies. In order to characterize lipoproteins in this RLP fraction and to determine to what extent their composition varies from one individual to another, we have used automated gel filtration chromatography to determine the size heterogeneity of RLP isolated from normolipidemic control subjects (n = 8), and from type III (n = 6) and type IV (n = 9) hyperlipoproteinemic patients, who by selection had similarly elevated levels of plasma triglyceride (406 +/- 43 and 397 +/- 35 mg/dl, respectively). Plasma RLP triglyceride, cholesterol, apoB, apoC-III, and apoE concentrations were elevated 2- to 6-fold (P < 0. 05) in hyperlipoproteinemic patients compared to controls. RLP fractions of type III patients were enriched in cholesterol and apoE compared to those of type IV patients, and RLP of type IV patients were enriched in triglyceride and apoC-III relative to those of normolipidemic subjects. In normolipidemic subjects, the majority of RLP had a size similar to LDL or HDL. The RLP of hyperlipoproteinemic patients were, however, larger and were similar in size to TRL, or were intermediate in size (i.e., ISL) between that of TRL and LDL. Compared to controls, ISL in the RLP fraction of type III patients were enriched in apoE relative to apoC-III, whereas in type IV patients they were enriched in apoC-III relative to apoE. These results demonstrate that: 1) RLP are heterogeneous in size and composition in both normolipidemic and hypertriglyceridemic subjects, and 2) the apoE and apoC-III composition of RLP is different in type III compared to type IV hyperlipoproteinemic patients.  相似文献

Capnocytophaga canimorsus and Capnocytophaga cynodegmi, both commensal bacteria in the oral cavities of dogs and cats, are zoonotic pathogens. In particular, C. canimorsus causes sepsis and fatal septic shock. Recently, a novel Capnocytophaga species, C. canis, was isolated from the oral cavities of healthy dogs. It is reportedly oxidase‐negative and therefore considered avirulent in humans. In the present study, three strains of C. canis were isolated from Japanese patients with sepsis. All three strains, HP20001, HP33001 and HP40001, were oxidase‐positive. Nucleotide sequence identities of the 16S rRNA gene of the three strains to the C. canimorsus type strain ATCC35979, C. cynodegmi type strain ATCC49044 and C. canis type strain LMG29146 were 96.9–97.0%, 96.9–97.0% and 99.7–99.8%, respectively. Multi‐locus sequence analysis based on seven house‐keeping genes, dnaJ, fumC, glyA, gyrB, murG, trpB and tuf, revealed that the oxidase‐positive C. canis strains isolated in Japan and oxidase‐negative strains of C. canis from canine oral cavities in Switzerland were clustered in different genetic subgroups. These results indicate that the virulence of C. canis strains in humans is associated with oxidase activity.

A bacterium that converted daidzein to O-desmethylangolensin was isolated from the feces of healthy humans. It was an obligately anaerobic, nonsporeforming, nonmotile and Gram-positive rod. The isolate used glucose, sucrose, raffinose, maltose, and fructose as carbon sources. It did not hydrolyze gelatin, esculin, or starch. The strain was urease, acid phosphatase, and arginine dihydrolase positive. It was catalase, oxidase, H2S, and indole negative. The major products of glucose fermentation were butyrate and lactate. Its mol% G+C was 51.2. The major cellular fatty acids were C16:0 DMA, C16:0, and C16:0 aldehyde. The structural type of cell wall peptidoglycan was suggested to be A1γ. The isolate was susceptible to β-lactam, cefem, and macrolide antibiotics and resistant to aminoglycoside and quinolone antibiotics. The bacterium was related to Eubacterium ramulus ATCC29099T, Eubacterium rectale ATCC33656T, and species of the genus Roseburia, but the highest 16S rRNA gene similarity to these described species was only 94.4%, consistent with its being classified as a novel genus. Based on the above, the isolate, named strain SY8519, was identified as belonging to a novel genus in the Clostridium rRNA cluster XIVa.  相似文献

We analyzed specific features of chondrocytes as cellular yield, cell doubling rates and the dependence between these parameters and patient-related data in a set of 211 osteoarthritic (OA) patients undergoing total joint replacement. For each patient the data available were joint type, age and gender. Knee samples chosen randomly among all biopsies were graded according to ICRS score. Patients’ age ranged between 30 and 90 years with a mean age of 66 ± 9.7 years. Patients were divided into age classes and statistically significant differences in proliferation rate at passage 1 were found between chondrocytes derived from young and old donors, with the last ones characterized by a lower proliferation rate. A similar trend was observed for proliferation rate at passage 2. For all the samples, cellular yields ranged between 0.1 and 5.5 million cells/g of tissue. No significant correlation was observed between the level of cartilage degeneration (ICRS score) and cellular yield and proliferation rates. However, in samples with a high degree of cartilage degeneration (ICRS score 4) the cellular yield was lower compared to the other three groups (ICRS scores 1–3). In this study we performed a systematic characterization of basic parameters of chondrocytes originating from a wide group of OA patients. Considering the use of autologous chondrocytes in chondral treatments, the characterization of cell basic features may represent an important step to determine the quality of the cell source which is a major determinant in the outcome of cell-based therapies.  相似文献

Recurrent meningitis in the absence of an identifiable causative organism or anatomical source is a difficult diagnostic challenge for any infectious disease consultant. We evaluated a 49-year-old woman with episodes of meningitis which occurred on at least nine separate occasions for over 24 years. No causative organism, physical agent, or underlying disease process was identified as the source of this patient's recurrent lymphocytic meningitis. When computerized tomographic head scanning was first performed in 1977, a prominence of the left lateral ventricle was evident. It was not until the area was subsequently evaluated with magnetic resonance imaging techniques 13 years later that a lesion could be clearly identified, removed, and evaluated at pathology. Time alone will tell whether the lesion, a cavernous hemangioma, was truly the cause of this patient's recurrent aseptic meningitis for 24 years.  相似文献
