The rare Johnston’s Genet (Genetta johnstoni) is one of the least known small carnivores inhabiting the West African rain forest. Some newly discovered specimens collected from the field (Guinea and Ivory Coast) and several rediscovered specimens resulting from reinvestigating collections, have permitted us to reconsider the distribution of the species. Coupled with a bibliographic review and a census of specimens kept in public collections, a reassessed distribution map is proposed, extending the previous estimated range 400 km to the West (Kolenté Plates, Guinea) and more than 600 km to the East (Tarkwa, Ghana). The majority of collected specimens have come from the inland forests of northern Liberia and south‐eastern Guinea, while the surroundings of Mt. Nimba also support numbers of this species. We suggest that the supposed restriction of G. johnstoni to rain forest be re‐evaluated because a specimen was collected in a region of moist woodlands and savannah (Kolenté Plateau). With regard to these new distributional data, conservation implications for the whole Upper Guinean block population are discussed.  相似文献

The population structures of three tropical eel species, Anguilla megastoma, A. obscura, and A. reinhardtii, collected from several localities of each species range in the western South Pacific Ocean were evaluated using statistical analyses of total number of vertebrae (TV) data, which also included previously published data. There was a significant difference in TV values between Samoa and French Polynesia specimens of A. megastoma, while no significant difference was observed in TV data of A. obscura, despite the two species having similar overlapping species distribution ranges. There also was no significant difference found in the TV data of A. reinhardtii. These results suggest that A. megastoma may be separated into eastern and western populations in the western South Pacific, but there was no statistical evidence using the TV data that A. obscura and A. reinhardtii have population structure in the western South Pacific. These possible types of population structures are discussed in relation to the phylogeography and life histories of other tropical anguillid eels.  相似文献

The conservation of humpback dolphins, distributed in coastal waters of the Indo‐West Pacific and eastern Atlantic Oceans, has been hindered by a lack of understanding about the number of species in the genus (Sousa) and their population structure. To address this issue, we present a combined analysis of genetic and morphologic data collected from beach‐cast, remote‐biopsied and museum specimens from throughout the known Sousa range. We extracted genetic sequence data from 235 samples from extant populations and explored the mitochondrial control region and four nuclear introns through phylogenetic, population‐level and population aggregation frameworks. In addition, 180 cranial specimens from the same geographical regions allowed comparisons of 24 morphological characters through multivariate analyses. The genetic and morphological data showed significant and concordant patterns of geographical segregation, which are typical for the kind of demographic isolation displayed by species units, across the Sousa genus distribution range. Based on our combined genetic and morphological analyses, there is convincing evidence for at least four species within the genus (S. teuszii in the Atlantic off West Africa, S. plumbea in the central and western Indian Ocean, S. chinensis in the eastern Indian and West Pacific Oceans, and a new as‐yet‐unnamed species off northern Australia).  相似文献

Amphidromy, characterized by freshwater adult and marine larval stages, has been shown to be an important influence on the genetic structure of aquatic populations. Sicydium salvini is a widespread goby species (Teleostei: Gobiidae: Sicydiinae) in the eastern Pacific with a continuous distribution from Mexico to Panama. Here, we use mitochondrial data to infer population genetic and historical demography of this species. Sequences were collected for the mitochondrial gene cytochrome b for 162 specimens sampled across the range of S. salvini with a concentration on rivers in Costa Rica. No genetic structure was detected between regions or rivers in the AMOVA analysis; the phylogeny for this species showed no geographic affinities and very little resolution. Historical demographic analyses indicated a population expansion during the late Pleistocene. These results are consistent with a panmictic population with expansion influenced strongly by Pleistocene glacial cycles and geologic uplift.  相似文献

Three rays opportunistically obtained near Margarita Island, Venezuela, were identified as lesser devil rays Mobula cf. hypostoma, but their disc widths were between 207 and 230 cm, which is almost double the reported maximum disc width of 120 cm for this species. These morphometric data suggest that lesser devil rays are either larger than previously recognized or that these specimens belong to an unknown sub‐species of Mobula in the Caribbean Sea. Better data are needed to describe the distribution, phenotypic variation and population structure of this poorly known species.  相似文献

The current work presents new data on the pycnogonids collected during the ANTXXI/2 cruise on board of “Polarstern” R/V during December 2003 and January 2004 in the Eastern Weddell Sea (Antarctica). Twenty-eight samples were taken, with different trawls, from depths between 120 and 1,866 m. In total, 251 specimens of pycnogonids, belonging to 31 species, were collected. Five species were observed to increase their depth range while six were found for the first time in the Weddell Sea, exhibiting an expansion in their geographical distribution, and confirming the general trend toward the circumpolarity of this group (23 of 31 species were circumpolar). Pallenopsis kupei is new for Antarctic waters. The most abundant species were Colossendeis megalonyx and Nymphon australe. Current data were completed with the samples collected from the same region during Polarstern cruise ANTXIII/3 (EASIZ I) in February–March 1996. Bathymetric patterns of distribution were analyzed for the total of 1,564 specimens (82 species, 14 genera). The results showed a difference in the composition between the continental shelf (from 100 to 900 m depth) and the slope (below 900 m), where the genus Nymphon dominated. Depth seems to be an influential factor in the structure of pycnogonid assemblages.  相似文献

We here report the finding of ten new specimens of the poorly known large‐billed reed warbler Acrocephalus orinus. Preliminary identifications were made on the basis of bill, tarsus and claw measurements, and their specific identity was then confirmed by comparison of partial sequences of the cytochrome b gene with a large data set containing nearly all other species in the genus Acrocephalus, including the type specimen of A. orinus. Five of the new specimens were collected in summer in Afghanistan and Kazakhstan, indicating that the species probably breeds in Central Asia, and the data and moult of the others suggest that the species migrates along the Himalayas to winter in N India and SE Asia. The population structure suggests a stable or shrinking population.  相似文献

Ptilocrinus amezianeae n. sp. is a new species of stalked crinoid attributed to the family Hyocrinidae. Forty-five specimens were collected from seamounts north of the Ross Sea, and one specimen from the Kerguelen Plateau at depths ranging from 450 to 1,680 m. The collection from Admiralty and Scott seamounts constitutes the first example of a hyocrinid population known both from in situ photographs and from numerous collected specimens ranging from small juvenile to large adult. Variation in theca and stalk articulation characters throughout ontogeny is congruent with the molecular data and indicates that all the specimens examined belong to a single species. Tegmen and pinnule architecture, brachial arrangement, and stalk articular facets indicate that Ptilocrinus amezianeae n. sp. has close affinities with P. clarki and P. pinnatus from the northeastern Pacific and displays the most derived characters among these three species. Two cases of true arm division into two unequal branches suggest that Ptilocrinus and Calamocrinus are closely related. The picture and video transects on Admiralty seamount show a patchy distribution of living specimens with patches of mean density ca. 2.6 individuals m-2. In situ photographs also document predation by a sea urchin and a sea star on tegmen and proximal arms. The COI gene sequences analyzed in 25 specimens from Admiralty and Scott seamounts display low pairwise distances, low nucleotidic diversity, and intermediate haplotype diversity. These results, together with disarticulated ossicles and attachment disks observed on in situ photographs, indicate that the population investigated here is in decline.  相似文献

Partial D‐loop sequences of museum specimens of brown trout and marble trout (Salmo trutta species complex) collected from Mediterranean rivers in the late 19th century were analysed to help to describe the native distribution of these species. All the individuals studied carried native haplotypes, the geographic distribution of which is consistent with published data. These results indicate that museum specimens from the 19th century could represent an opportunity to get a picture of the original genetic diversity distribution of this species complex.  相似文献

The greatest extent of Afromontane environments in the world is found in Ethiopia. These areas support exceptional biodiversity, but forest cover and ecological integrity have declined sharply in recent decades. Conservation and management efforts are hampered in part by an inadequate understanding of the basic ecology of major tree species. We investigated population structure and inferred population dynamics from size frequency distributions of 22 forest tree species encountered in montane forests of Ethiopia. We collected new empirical data from four sites in the Bale Mountains, where some of the country's most extensive and least disturbed forests remain, and conducted a systematic review and analysis of all such studies that reported population structure for one or more of these species in Ethiopia. Thirteen widespread montane tree species showed a reverse‐J size distribution, indicating a relatively stable population structure. Six other species had size‐frequency distributions that indicate episodic recruitment and/or removal of certain size classes. Specific causes of these patterns are uncertain: they may involve timber harvesting, herbivory, fire, or natural disturbances, but patterns were inconsistent and locality dependent. For three other tree species, existing data are inadequate for any interpretation of population structure and dynamics. A species of particular conservation concern that emerged from this analysis was Hagenia abyssinica, which was found in all areas to consist only of larger individuals with no recent recruitment. For management and conservation purposes, the species in most urgent need of new research are those with inadequate or inconsistent data, and H. abyssinica.  相似文献

Nitellopsis obtusa (Charales, Charophyceae) are widely distributed from Europe to Asia; however, this species has been recorded in only the five lakes in central Honshu in Japan. This species was thought to be extinct in Japan, but was rediscovered in limited areas of Lake Kawaguchi in central Honshu. More recently, we discovered more Japanese populations of N. obtusa in Lake Biwa in western Honshu, and it became clear that the species had a broader distribution in Japan than originally believed. In addition, although only male or female thalli have been collected at each lake, both male and female thalli were found from Lake Biwa. This is the first report of a potentially sexual population of N. obtusa in Japan. The DNA sequences of three chloroplast DNA markers, including both coding and non‐coding regions, were identical in all specimens from Lake Kawaguchi and Lake Nojiri (Central Honshu), and differed from those of Lake Biwa and German specimens. Although Japanese and German specimens were genetically similar, Japanese specimens displayed considerable genetic diversity according to locality.  相似文献

Aplysia californica is a species widely used in neurobiology, and specimens are collected from a wide range of places along its distribution range. A. californica is endemic to the coast of California and the Gulf of California. On the west coast, this is an unusual distribution range relative to other benthic species from that region. Four polymorphic nuclear Mendelian markers were identified (three single-copy nuclear DNA loci and one microsatellite) for an initial survey of genetic variation of wild populations. F ST values not significantly different from 0 (overall F ST= 0.0148) suggest there was no geographic genetic population subdivision in 177 individuals examined. The composition, abundance and vertical distribution of mesoplanktonic cnidarians collected along a transect across the Weddell Sea have been analysed. The transect was characterized by a thermocline, approximately between 200 and 100 m, which deepened significantly towards the shelf edges. In total, 10 species of medusae and 18 species of siphonophores were identified. The most abundant medusae were Pantachogon scotti (up to 11,671 specimens/1,000 m3) and Arctapodema ampla (up to 960 specimens/1000 m3). The most abundant siphonophores were Muggiaea bargmannae (up to 1,172 nectophores/1,000 m3) and Dimophyes arctica (up to 230 nectophores/1,000 m3). Five assemblages of planktonic cnidarians were distinguished: (a) epipelagic species located in and above the thermocline; (b) epi- and upper mesopelagic species located in, above and just below the thermocline; (c) epi- and mesopelagic species located in and below the thermocline; (d) mesopelagic species; (e) lower mesopelagic species. Differences in the depth distribution of the various species gave rise to a clear partitioning of the mesoplanktonic cnidarian population throughout the water column. This vertical partitioning was related to the existence of a thermocline, the structure of the water column and the vertical distribution of prey.  相似文献

Ferrissia wautieri, a freshwater limpet, is a widely distributed species in The Netherlands. In a pond near Nijmegen samples were taken twice a month over the year to study the population size and structure of this species in relation to the water temperature. Only ancyloids were found. Production of juveniles is temperature-dependent; peak numbers occurred in July and August. Just-hatched juveniles (shell length 0.6–1.0 mm) occurred over a lengthy period in the year, but were absent in March and April. During these months the collected numbers of specimens were very low. The largest specimens were collected during March, April and May.  相似文献

A genetic survey of Barbus spp. populations in the Marches Region (Adriatic River basins), central Italy, was carried out using mitochondrial and nuclear markers (partial D‐loop, cyt b sequences and microsatellite loci) in order to ascertain their systematic position and to address their genetic structure which is key to conservation action planning. Analyses were conducted on sequences obtained from 91 individuals collected from eight sampling sites in five different rivers, from two specimens provided by the Ichthyological Centre of Rome and mitochondrial sequences of Barbus spp. retrieved from GenBank. Presumptive classification based on external morphological characters was not confirmed by genetic analysis, by means of which all specimens collected in the Marches Region were ascribed to Barbus plebejus. Genetic diversity values (h and π) of sampling groups were all different from 0 except the one sample collected from the upper reaches of the River Tenna, above a hydroelectric dam. Population connectivity and colonization patterns of the studied area were inferred from an analysis of molecular variance distribution and evolutionary relationships among haplotypes. The results point to different levels of isolation among sampling groups due to ecological and anthropogenic factors and the effect of an artificial barrier on genetic variability and conservation status of the population. Finally, this study confirms the uncertainty associated with systematic classification of Barbus spp. based on morphological characters due to the phenotypic plasticity of the species.  相似文献

Carcinus aestuarii Nardo, 1847 is a widespread coastal crab species throughout the Mediterranean Sea with a pelagic larval phase. This species tolerates a wide range of environmental conditions and typically inhabits fragmented habitats, such as embayments, lagoons and estuaries. It is therefore a good candidate species for studying and testing different phylogeographical hypotheses in the Mediterranean Sea. By contrast to its Atlantic sister species, Carcinus maenas, studies on the population genetic structure of C. aestuarii in its native range are still scarce. In the present study, specimens from along the European Mediterranean Sea were collected and DNA‐sequenced and analyses were applied to discriminate between present day and historical factors influencing the population genetic structure of this species. The results obtained demonstrate the existence of two genetically distinct geographical groups, corresponding to the eastern and western Mediterranean, with further subdivision within the East Mediterranean Basin. A strong asymmetric gene flow was recorded toward the Eastern Basin, which may play a crucial role in shaping the present day biogeographical patterns of this species and potentially other sympatric ones with pelagic larvae. © 2013 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2013, 109 , 771–790.  相似文献

Recent changes in kelp distribution along the north coast of Spain are described and analysed through a long-term population study focused on Saccorhiza polyschides. The main purpose of this work was to understand which population processes are more sensitive to increased sea surface temperatures and reductions in the intensity of upwelling episodes in the current scenario of global warming. Data on the distribution of kelp species (old and recent data) were obtained from the literature and compared with current species distributions assessed by field sampling between 2007 and 2010 and covering a transition coastline of 200 km. The long-term population study of Saccorhiza polyschides was conducted at a site close to the edge of its current distribution. Data for recruitment, growth and survival, as well as density and supported biomass of populations collected since the 1990s were analysed using data from the late 1970s for comparison. Kelps on the north coast of Spain have shown a westward retreat since the 1980s. Dense populations of Saccorhiza polyschides, the most important species, and Laminaria ochroleuca have been reduced to small patches and isolated individuals east of Peñas Cape (43° 39.4′ N; 5° 50.8′ W). The long-term study of Saccorhiza polyschides populations showed a collapse in the growth of the sporophyte and very low recruitment from the beginning of this century. The possible causal factors of this population decline and its consequences are considered, suggesting that long warm summer periods (more than 30 consecutive days of seawater temperature?>?20°C) could alter kelp performance.  相似文献

We investigated the endangered status and taxonomic status of the freshwater crayfish Procambarus ferrugineus, a crayfish species considered for the candidate list of the Endangered Species Act. This species has a narrow distribution from central Arkansas, USA and is codistributed with its presumed sister species, Procambarus liberorum. We sampled extensively throughout the ranges of both primary burrowing species and collected mitochondrial DNA from a hypervariable fragment of the 16S gene from 109 individuals across 22 sites. We also collected data from a variable region of the 12S gene from a subset of the resulting 16S haplotypes. Due to our inability to sample what we considered P. ferrugineus in the field, we included museum specimens from the United States Natural History Museum of both P. ferrugineus and P. liberorum. Analyses of the resulting data suggested that these two species are indeed the same and we therefore synonymize them under the name of priority—P. liberorum. Additionally, our sampling discovered three new cryptic species from southwestern Arkansas all from the genus Procambarus. Nested clade phylogeographic analysis coupled with population genetic analyses suggested that P. liberorum has had three rounds of range expansion throughout the inferred evolutionary history. Using IUCN Red List criteria for conservation assessment, we conclude that the species P. liberorum should be considered stable, but with special concern because of habitat fragmentation and urbanization, small restricted range, and a moderate level of genetic diversity. Procambarus reimeri should be considered endangered due to its limited geographic range and the potential for a decline in suitable habitat. The three potentially newly discovered species should be considered data deficient until more information is obtained on their distributional limits and habitat requirements. Our study highlights the importance of thorough geographic and taxonomic sampling coupled with the utility of collecting data from museum specimens to reach robust taxonomic and conservation conclusions for endangered species.  相似文献

Abstract

The genus Coleura contains two species: C. seychellensis restricted to the Seychelles Archipelago and C. afra broadly distributed on the African continent and the Arabian Peninsula. We recently captured and collected specimens of Coleura from Madagascar, an island from which it was previously unknown. Using museum specimens and the new material from Madagascar, we review morphological variation in members of this genus and present characters for species identification. On the basis of these comparisons, specimens from Madagascar are referable to C. afra. We present information on the natural history of the recently discovered Malagasy population.  相似文献

The overall status of self-incompatibility, as assessed by the rate of capsule-set after self-pollination, was investigated in the genus Calibrachoa (Solanaceae). Thirty-two species were surveyed using a total of 655 individuals collected in 102 different native populations in Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, and Uruguay. The rate of capsule-set in 278 voucher specimens collected from the same native habitats was also measured to obtain additional information to assess the degree of self-(in)compatibility. Only one species, Calibrachoa parviflora, was self-compatible (SC, autogamous) and the other 31 species were found to be self-incompatible (SI). A mixed population (SI and SC individuals in the same population) was not found. The differentiation of C. parviflora as an autogamous species is associated with a successful occupation of different (riparian) habitats within a larger range of geographic distribution compared to the rest of the species in the principally SI genus of Calibrachoa.
