Natural fluctuations in environmental conditions are likely to induce variation in the intensity or direction of natural selection. A long-term study of the insect, Eurosta solidaginins Fitch (Diptera; Tephritidae), which induces stem galls on the perennial herb Solidago altissima (Asteraceae) was performed to explore the patterns of variation in phenotypic selection. The intensity of selection imposed by parasitoids and predators on gallmaking larvae, for gall size, was measured across 16 populations over the course of 4 generations, for a total of 64 population-generations. Directional selection was quantified by i, the selection intensity, and variance selection by j‘, a measure of the intensity of selection on phenotypic variance. Size-dependent attack by parasitoids caused upward directional selection (mean ip = 0.42; SE = 0.023), while size-dependent bird attack favored larvae that induced smaller galls (mean ib = -0.07; SE = 0.013. The mean net directional selection intensity was 0.35 (SE = 0.030), which indicates that insects inducing larger galls are generally favored by selection. The opposing patterns of size-dependent attack resulted in stabilizing selection in half the population generations, with an overall average. j‘ of -0.11 (SE = 0.078). The magnitude of directional selection was strongly influenced by the population mean gall size and weakly by the optimal gall size. The intensity of variance selection was strongly influenced by the shape of the fitness function, with sigmoidal and Gaussian-like shapes causing greater depletion of phenotypic variance.  相似文献

We have examined the influence of temperature, protein synthesis, and energy metabolism on the process of silicon biomineralization in synchronized cultures of the diatom Navicula saprophilia Lange-Bertalot & Bonik (1976). Temperature effects on silicon polymerization were compared in vitro and in vivo. In vivo incorporation was very temperature dependent with a Q10 of 7.53. In contrast, the Q10 for in vitro polymerization was 1.42, indicating much lower temperature dependence. This difference in Q10 values suggests that in vivo polymerization involves more than autopolycondensation. Cycloheximide addition to synchronized cultures up to, but not later than one hour after the addition of silicic acid depressed total uptake, incorporation, but not pool size. Developing valves demonstrated morphological abnormalities with cycloheximide additions from 0 to 2 h following silicic acid addition. These data suggest that de nova proteins are required in biomineralization and that they are synthesized during or just after cytokinesis. Biomineralization is not coupled to energy derived directly from photosystem II or photosynthesis, since neither darkness nor DCMU had an effect on any aspect of silicification.  相似文献

Cell division in most eukaryotic algae grown on alternating periods of light and dark (LD) is synchronized or phased so that cell division occurs only during a restricted portion of the LD cycle. However, the phase angle of the cell division gate, the time of division relative to the beginning of the light period, is known to be affected by growth conditions such as nutrient status and temperature. In this study, it is shown that the phase angle of cell division in a diatom, Cylindrotheca fusiformis Reimann and Lewin, is affected by the N-limited growth rate; cell division occurred later in the dark period (12:12 h LD cycle) when the growth rate was infradian (D = 0.42 d?1) than when it was ultradian (D = 1.0 d?1). Nitrogen-pulses did not affect the phase angle of the division gate, but could shift the time of peak cell division activity within the division gate. The effects, if any, of N-pulses were dependent upon the growth rate and the time of day that the pulses were administered. These responses indicate that the timing of cell division in this diatom is not determined solely by the zeitgeber from the LD cycle, but rather that a LD cycle control mechanism and a N-mediated control mechanism are both involved and are somewhat interdependent. In addition, an increase in protein was observed immediately after administering a N-pulse to C. fusiformis in the ultradian growth mode indicating that the accumulation of protein can be uncoupled from the cell division cycle.  相似文献

The marine diatom Thalassiosira pseudonana (Hustedt, clone 3H) Hasle and Heimdal was cultured under three different light regimes: 100 μmol photon · m?2· s?1 on 12:12 h light : dark (L:D) cycles; 50 μmol photon · m?2· s?2 on 24:0 h L:D; and 100 μmol photon · m?2· s?1 on 24:0 h L:D. It was harvested during logarithmic and stationary phases for analysis of biochemical composition. Across the different light regimes, protein (as % of organic weight) was highest in cells during logarithmic phase, whereas carbohydrate and lipid were highest during stationary phase. Carbohydrate concentrations were most affected by the different light regimes; cells grown under 12:12 h L:D contained 37–44% of the carbohydrate of cells grown under 24:0 h L:D. Cells in logarithmic phase had high proportions of polar lipids (79 to 89% of total lipid) and low triacylglycerol (≤10% of total lipid). Cells in stationary phase contained less polar lipid (48 to 57% of total lipid) and more triacylglycerol (22 to 45% of total lipid). The fatty acid composition of logarithmic phase cells grown under 24:0 h L:D were similar, but the 100 μmol photon · m?2· s?1 (12:12 h L:D) cells at the same stage contained a higher proportion of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) and a lower proportion of saturated and monounsaturated fatty acids due to different levels of 16:0, 16:1(n-7), 16:4(n-1), 18:4(n-3), and 20:5(n-3). With the onset of stationary phase, cells grown at 100 μmol photon · m?2· s?1 (both 12:12 and 24:0 h L:D) increased in proportions of saturated and monounsaturated fatty adds and decreased in PUFAs. Concentrations (% organic or dry weight) of 14:0, 16:0, 16:1(n-7), 20:5(n-3), and 22:6(n-3) increased in cells of all cultures during stationary phase. The amino acid compositions of cells were similar irrespective of harvest stage and light regime. For mariculture, the recommended light regime for culturing T. pseudonana will depend on the nutritional requirements of the animal to which the alga is fed. For rapidly growing bivalve mollusc larvae, stationary-phase cultures grown under a 24:0 h L:D regime may provide more energy by virtue of their higher percentage of carbohydrate and high proportions and concentrations of energy-rich saturated fatty acids.  相似文献

The Pacific walrus population has been depleted and subsequently allowed to recover three times in the past 150 yr. As we see it, the population has been made to fluctuate like an r-selected species, rather than being maintained at a high, stable level, as befits a K-selected species. The latest depletion began in the 1930s but was not recognized until 25 yr later, by which time the population had been reduced by at least half. Without benefit of communication, the U.S.S.R. and the State of Alaska put similar protective measures into place by 1960, and in the next two decades the walrus population recovered again, at least doubling in size. By 1980, it already was showing density-dependent signs of having approached or reached the carrying capacity of its environment. As productivity and calf survival declined sharply in the late 1970s and early 1980s the catches more than doubled. We believe that the combined effects of natural curtailment and human intervention may be bringing the population down again rather rapidly. With the present, crude monitoring methods, delayed management responses, and poor international communications, however, the downward trend may not be acknowledged for at least another decade, by which time the unilateral Soviet and American corrective measures are likely to be too much, too late. Walrus management needs to be based less on response to immediate crisis and more on long term prediction than it has been in the past. Because the U.S.A. and U.S.S.R. are trying to manage the same walrus population, without sufficient communication or consensus and sometimes to opposite ends, an international joint management program needs to be implemented.  相似文献

Life-history traits such as longevity and fecundity often show low heritability. This is usually interpreted in terms of Fisher's fundamental theorem to mean that populations are near evolutionary equilibrium and genetic variance in total fitness is low. We develop the causal relationship between metric traits and life-history traits to show that a life-history trait is expected to have a low heritability whether or not the population is at equilibrium. This is because it is subject to all the environmental variation in the metric traits that affect it plus additional environmental variation. There is no simple prediction regarding levels of additive genetic variance in life-history traits, which may be high at equilibrium. Several other patterns in the inheritance of life-history traits are readily predicted from the causal model. These include the strength of genetic correlations between life-history traits, levels of nonadditive genetic variance, and the inevitability of genotype-environment interaction.  相似文献

心脏收缩时间间期(STI)通过单笔心电图机叠加记录ECG、心音图和颈动脉图后测得。对83例患者进行了STI均值与选择性冠状动脉造影(CAG)及左室造影的相关研究。患者除陈旧性心肌梗塞及室壁瘤外,根据冠状动脉(CA)狭窄程度而分组。STI随CA狭窄程度及范围的增加而显著异常,提示心功能随心肌缺血程度加重而进行性恶化。左室射血分数(LVEF)的降低也支持这一点。CA狭窄程度、范围与射血前时间/左室射血时间(PEP/LVET)呈正相关。在决定左室功能的异常方面,PEP/LVET和LVEF的临床意义完全相同。提示STI在评价冠心病心功能上是有用的。排除影响STI的某些因素后,PEP/LVET≥0.38可作为判断冠心病左心功能减退的标志。但轻度CA狭窄患者的STI可正常,这可能与静息时尚有足够的CA贮备力有关。  相似文献

The effects of silicon deficiency on the metabolism and composition of lipids in Cyclotella cryptica T13L Reimann, Lewin, and Guillard were examined. Silicon-deficient cells had higher levels of neutral lipids (primarily triacylglycerols) and higher proportions of saturated and monounsaturated fatty acids than silicon-replete cells. After 4 h of silicon deficiency, the percentage of newly assimilated NaH14CO3 partitioned into lipids increased from 27.6% to 54.1%, whereas the percentage partitioned into chrysolaminarin decreased from 21.6% to 10.6%. In addition, pulse-chase experiments with NaH14CO3 indicated that the amount of 14C in the total cellular lipid fraction increased by 32% after 12 h of silicon deficiency despite the absence of additional photoassimilable 14C. Therefore, the accumulation of lipids in response to silicon deficiency appears to be due to two distinct processes: (a) an increase in the proportion of newly assimilated carbon partioned into lipids, and (2) a slow conversion of previously assimilated carbon from non-lipid compounds into lipids  相似文献

Four allopatric populations of the widely distributed western anise swallowtail butterfly, Papilio zelicaon, use different plant genera as hosts, but simultaneous choice experiments showed that these populations have diverged only slightly in oviposition preference. Of the four populations—two from southeastern Washington State, one from coastal southwestern Washington State, and one from central California—three use hosts that are not available to any of the others. Although variation for the degree of preference for particular plant species occurred within and among populations, all four populations ranked hosts in the same overall order. Monophagy on a local, low-ranking host outside the range of high-ranking hosts did not necessarily lead to the loss of preference for those high-ranking hosts, thereby indicating that the high-ranking hosts would still be accepted, and in some cases even preferred, if a population encountered them again. Hence, the overall preference hierarchy among P. zelicaon populations appears to be evolutionarily conservative. Analyses of differences among families within the California population indicated that increased preference for some hosts is inversely correlated, whereas preference for other hosts may be uncorrelated. Positive correlations may also occur but were not observed among the plant species tested. Overall, the results indicate local monophagy on different plant species in P. zelicaon has not involved major reorganizations in the preference hierarchy of ovipositing females, even in populations that may have fed on a low-ranking host for many generations. Instead, small increases in preference for local hosts have occurred within an evolutionarily conservative preference hierarchy.  相似文献

The acute toxicity of Cr(VI) to the diatom Thalassiosira pseudonana (Hasle and Heimdal) clone 3H was determined in artificial media of 3.2 and 0.32 ppt salinity and with variations of sulfate concentration in the media independent of salinity. Inhibitory concentrations of Cr(VI) ranged from 6.6 μM for growth rate and 4.9 μM for cell yield at 3.2 ppt salinity and 2.8 μM sulfate to 0.04 μM for growth rate and 0.02 μM for cell yield at 0.32 ppt salinity and 0.019 mM sulfate. The inhibition by Cr(VI) was a function of the ratio of Cr(VI) to sulfate. Inhibition occurred when-this ratio exceeded about 500:1. It is suggested that the mechanism for the toxicity of Cr(VI) to diatoms and perhaps other aquatic organisms involves a site at which sulfate and chromate compete.  相似文献

对皇草(Pnnisetum purpureum ×P glaucum)杂交狼尾草(pennisetum glaucum×P purpureum)、矮象草(Pennisetum purpureum)和墨西哥玉米(Zea mnys subsp.mexicana)等4种牧草在生长期进行了4次割草试验,探讨了不同割草次数对牧草单兜株数的影响。结果表明:1)在进行1次割草的情况下,4种牧草的营养生长时间分别为53、96、153和208 d时,单兜株数分别为20.2,8.5,17.2,11.7株,牧草的单兜株数随营养生长时间的增加而呈大小相间排列;2)在可靠性为95%以上时,第二次割草时的单兜株数与第一次割草时有明显的差异,而多次割草后的差异性逐渐减小;3)营养生长的时间长短和前一次的单兜株数对牧草后一次的萌发和分蘖有显著的影响,在一定程度上决定了后一次的单兜株数;4)杂交狼尾草在多次连续割草后,单位面积上的株数变得不均匀,而皇草、矮象草和墨西哥玉米则逐渐均匀化,这个作用使得杂交狼尾草在退化坡地水土保持上的价值减少.  相似文献

The effects of selenium deficiency on the siliceous and nonsiliceous components of the planktonic marine diatom Thalassiosira pseudonana (Hust.) Hasle and Heimdal (clone 3H) are examined using light and electron microscopy. Selenium deficiency induces elongation along the pervalvar axis initially as a result of chain formation caused by the failure of sibling cells to separate and subsequently by cell elongation via the production of hyaline girdle bands. In Se-deficient cultures cell elongation involves the blockage of both mitotic and cytokinetic components of cell division. Selenium deficiency results in ultrastructural alterations in the reticular membrane system and in mitochondrial and chloroplast membranes. Various types of inclusions are seen in vacuolar areas and the accumulation of lipid reserves is evident in Se-deficient cells. These results provide indirect evidence for a metabolic Se requirement in this algal species.  相似文献

朱砂叶螨对氧化乐果、三氯杀螨醇、双甲脒和哒螨灵产生抗性后(抗药性系数分别为152.83倍、55.59倍、62.61倍和15.67倍),繁殖力均显著降低,且发育加速。通过组建各品系生命表得知,该螨抗氧化乐果品系、抗三氯杀螨醇品质、抗双甲脒品系和抗哒螨灵品系的相对适合度分别为0.53、0.62、0.59和0.64,均小于1,具有明显的适合度缺陷。抗药性系数和相对适合度呈直线负相关。  相似文献

七星瓢虫(Coccinella septempunctata Linaeus)在山东泰安眷甘蓝上发生1个世代.成虫和幼虫发生高峰期在5月中旬;在秋甘蓝上仅发生越冬代成虫,10月中、下旬为其高峰期。该虫发生盛期较菜蚜早,捕食能力强,有较大的保护利用价值。除虫脲、抑太保、卡死克、灭幼脲3号、B4和避蚜雾对七星瓢虫蛹和成虫均有较好的选择性;辛硫磷、灭多威、敌杀死和灭扫利对成虫杀伤力强,但对蛹亦有一定的选择性。七星瓢虫蛹的耐药性明显高于成虫。  相似文献

桃蚜Myrus perslcae、萝卜蚜Lipaphis crystml在能正常产仔的整个恒温范围内,成蚜和新产仔蚜体重随温度的变化都符合二次抛物线,但体重最高值出现较低的温度下.即体重变化主要表现为随温度升高而下降的趋势.在组建蚜虫的生命生殖力表时,以新产仔蚜体重对其在各温度下的生殖事进行校正。并未对计算所得的内禀增长能力rm值及其随温度的变化情况产生明显的影响,不仅没有提供新的信息。相反。这一方法使计算所得rm的值含义模糊。故建议不予采用。  相似文献

Abstract With reference to the material related to the evolution of host-plant associations, phylogenetic analyses of aphids in Lachnidae are carried out by using 20 taxa and 26 characters. The monophyly of Traminae and Cinarinae are recognized. However, Lachninae is proved to be a polyphyletic group. Three traditional subfamilies, Cinarinae, Lachninae and Traminae are still retained. Three tribes within Cinarinae which include Cinarini, Eulachnini and Schizolachnini are suggested. It is concluded that the ancestral host plants of Lachnidae were deciduous plants rather than coniferous trees or other plants.  相似文献
