Parasites may be expected to become locally adapted to their hosts. However, while many empirical studies have demonstrated local parasite adaptation, others have failed to demonstrate it, or have shown local parasite maladaptation. Researchers have suggested that gene flow can swamp local parasite-host dynamics and produce local adaptation only at certain geographical scales; others have argued that evolutionary lags can account for both null and maladaptive results. In this paper, we use item response theory (IRT) to test whether host range influences the likelihood of parasites locally adapting to their hosts. We collated 32 independent experiments testing for local adaptation, where parasites could be assigned as having either broad or narrow host ranges (BHR and NHR, respectively). Twenty-five tests based on BHR parasites had a significantly lower average effect size than seven NHR tests, indicating that studies based on BHR parasites are less likely to demonstrate local parasite adaptation. We argue that this may relate to evolutionary lags during diffuse coevolution of BHR parasites with their hosts, rather than differences in experimental approaches or other confounds between BHR and NHR studies. 相似文献

Herbivores that have recently expanded their host plant ranges provide opportunities to test hypotheses about the evolution of host plant specialization. Here, we take advantage of the contemporary global range expansion of the monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus) and conduct a reciprocal rearing experiment involving monarch populations with divergent host plant assemblages. Specifically, we ask the following questions: (1) Do geographically disparate populations of monarch butterflies show evidence for local adaptation to their host plants? If so, what processes contribute to this pattern? (2) How is dietary breadth related to performance across multiple host species in monarch populations? (3) Does the coefficient of variation in performance vary across sympatric versus allopatric hosts? We find evidence for local adaptation in larval growth rate and survival based on sympatric/allopatric contrasts. Migratory North American monarchs, which have comparatively broad host breadth, have higher mean performance than derived nonmigratory populations across all host plant species. Monarchs reared on their sympatric host plants show lower coefficient of variation in performance than monarchs reared on allopatric hosts. We focus our discussion on possible mechanisms contributing to local adaptation to novel host plants and potential explanations for the reduction in performance that we observed in derived monarch populations. 相似文献

Summary Thirty-nine nodule bacteria isolated from indigenous legumes in South-Western Australia were found to range in effectiveness in symbiosis withLupinus digitatus. Effective nodulation by bacteria from some of the native legumes is, therefore, probably involved in the successful naturalization of this introduced lupin. It was found that dry weights, vigour ranking and ranking visually for leghaemoglobin concentration, are all useful in the rapid assessment of bacterial strain performance in nitrogen fixation in the lupin. 相似文献

A study was conducted to determine whether colonization of legume roots and nodulation byRhizobium meliloti andBradyrhizobium japonicum could be enhanced by using inocula containing microorganisms that produce antibiotics suppressing soil or rhizosphere inhabitants
but not the root-nodule bacteria. An antibiotic-producing strain of Pseudomonas and one of Bacillus were isolated, and mutants
ofR. meliloti andB. japonicum sp. resistant to the antibiotics were used. The colonization of the alfalfa rhizosphere and nodulation byR. meliloti were enhanced by inoculation of soil withPseudomonas sp. in soil initially containing 2.7×105
R. meliloti per g. The colonization of soybean roots byB. japonicum was enhanced by inoculating soil with three cell densities ofBacillus sp., and nodulation was stimulated byBacillus sp. added at two cell densities. In some tests, the dry weights of soybeans and seed yield increased as a result of these
treatments, and co-inoculation with Bacillus also increased pod formation. Inoculation of seeds withBacillus sp. and the root-nodule bacterium enhanced nodulation of soybeans and alfalfa, but colonization byB. japonicum andR. meliloti was stimulated only during the early period of plant growth.
Studies were also conducted withStreptomyces griseus and isolates ofR. meliloti andB. japonicum resistant to products of the actinomycete. Nodulation of alfalfa byR. meliloti was little or not affected by the actinomycete alone; however, both nodulation and colonization were enhanced if the soil
was initially amended with chitin andS. griseus was also added. Chitin itself did not affectR. meliloti. Treatments of seeds with chitin orS. griseus alone did not enhance colonization of alfalfa roots byR. meliloti or soybean roots byB. japonicum, but the early colonization of the roots by both bacterial species was promoted if the seeds received both chitin andS. griseus; this treatment also increased nodulation and dry weights of alfalfa and soybeans and the N content of alfalfa. It is suggested
that co-inoculation of legumes with antibiotic-producing microorganisms and root-nodule bacteria resistant to those antibiotics
is a promising means of promoting nodulation and possibly nitrogen fixation. 相似文献

Symbiovars in rhizobia reflect bacterial adaptation to legumes 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Legume specificity is encoded in rhizobial genetic elements that may be transferred among species and genera. Dissemination (by lateral transfer) of gene assemblies dictating host range accounts for the existence of the same biological variant (biovar) in distinct microbiological species. Different alternative biovars may exist in a single species expanding their adaptation to different niches (legume nodules). A review of all reported biovars is presented. Instead of the term biovar, symbiotic variant (symbiovar) is proposed as a parallel term to pathovar in pathogenic bacteria. Symbiovars should be determined based on the symbiotic capabilities in plant hosts, distinguished by the differences in host range and supported by symbiotic gene sequence information. 相似文献

Agriculture depends heavily on biologically fixed nitrogen from the symbiotic association between rhizobia and plants. Molecular nitrogen is fixed by differentiated forms of rhizobia in nodules located on plant roots. The phytohormone, ethylene, acts as a negative factor in the nodulation process. Recent discoveries suggest several strategies used by rhizobia to reduce the amount of ethylene synthesized by their legume symbionts, decreasing the negative effect of ethylene on nodulation. At least one strain of rhizobia produces rhizobitoxine, an inhibitor of ethylene synthesis. Active 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate (ACC) deaminase has been detected in a number of other rhizobial strains. This enzyme catalyzes the cleavage of ACC to alpha-ketobutyrate and ammonia. It has been shown that the inhibitory effect of ethylene on plant root elongation can be reduced by the activity of ACC deaminase. 相似文献

Transient susceptibility of root cells in four common legumes to nodulation by rhizobia 总被引:28,自引:14,他引:28 下载免费PDF全文
Root cells of four common legumes were found to remain susceptible to nodulation by rhizobia for only a short period of time. Delayed inoculation experiments conducted with these legume hosts indicated that the initially susceptible region of the root became progressively less susceptible if inoculations were delayed by a few hours. Profiles of the frequency of nodule formation relative to marks indicating the regions of root and root hair development at the time of inoculation indicated that nodulation of Vigna sinensis (L.) Endl. cv California Black Eye and Medicago sativa L. cvs Moapa and Vernal roots was inhibited just below the region that was most susceptible at the time of inoculation. This result suggests the existence of a fast-acting regulatory mechanism in these hosts that prevents overnodulation. Nodulation in white clover may occur in two distinct phases. In addition to the transient susceptibility of preemergent and developing root hair cells, there appeared to be an induced susceptibility of mature clover root hair cells. A cell-free bacterial exudate preparation from Rhizobium trifolii cells was found to render mature root hair cells of white clover more rapidly susceptible to nodulation. 相似文献

A simple clonal micro-propagation system for Parasponia andersoniiwas employed to study the nodulation response of this non-legumeto inoculation by the broad host range Rhizobium sp. NGR234,isolated from Lablab purpureus, and also to tropical legumerhizobia isolated from Aeschynomene species. Partially effectivenodules, assayed by acetylene reduction and 15N dilution procedures, were induced with strain NGR234 and its spontaneous streptomycinresistantmutant ANU240. Effective nodules were produced by one of theAeschynomene strains (ORS302) tested, with rates of acetylenereduction comparable to those of root nodules produced by Bradyrhizobiumstrain CP279, originally isolated from P. andersonii. Lightand transmission electron microscopy showed that there was acorrelation between the nitrogen fixing capability of the symbiosisbetween NGR234 and Parasponia and the number of persistent infection(fixation) threads within the nodule cells. Summary Cross-inoculation experiments with 10 pure cultured strains and 17 host species were carried out. The 10 strains were isolated from the root nodules on actinorhizal trees ranging in 9 species, 5 genera and 4 families. The host species belong to 5 genera. The pure cultured strains fromAlnus are of strong ability to infect different species of the same genus. The seedlings inoculated with these strains are able to nodulate normally. These strains can also infect and nodulate the seedlings ofMyrica californica, but not the seedlings of Elaeagnus, Casuarina andMyrica rubra. The pure cultured strains from Elaeagnus can infect and nodulate the host species in the same genus and family with an exception ofE. viridis vardelavayi, which can be only poorly nodulated by a few strains from Elaeagnus. The strains from Elaeagnus cannot infect the seedlings of Alnus andMyrica rubra. The results presented here suggest thatFrankia endophytes can be divided into two groups: Alnus group and Elaeagnus group. 相似文献

In species with separate sexes, parasite prevalence and disease expression is often different between males and females. This effect has mainly been attributed to sex differences in host traits, such as immune response. Here, we make the case for how properties of the parasites themselves can also matter. Specifically, we suggest that differences between host sexes in many different traits, such as morphology and hormone levels, can impose selection on parasites. This selection can eventually lead to parasite adaptations specific to the host sex more commonly encountered, or to differential expression of parasite traits depending on which host sex they find themselves in. Parasites adapted to the sex of the host in this way can contribute to differences between males and females in disease prevalence and expression. Considering those possibilities can help shed light on host-parasite interactions, and impact epidemiological and medical science. 相似文献

Mutualistic symbiosis and nitrogen fixation of legume rhizobia play a key role in ecological environments. Although many different rhizobial species can form nodules with a specific legume, there is often a dominant microsymbiont, which has the highest nodule occupancy rates, and they are often known as the “most favorable rhizobia”. Shifts in the most favorable rhizobia for a legume in different geographical regions or soil types are not well understood. Therefore, in order to explore the shift model, an experiment was designed using successive inoculations of rhizobia on one legume. The plants were grown in either sterile vermiculite or a sandy soil. Results showed that, depending on the environment, a legume could select its preferential rhizobial partner in order to establish symbiosis. For perennial legumes, nodulation is a continuous and sequential process. In this study, when the most favorable rhizobial strain was available to infect the plant first, it was dominant in the nodules, regardless of the existence of other rhizobial strains in the rhizosphere. Other rhizobial strains had an opportunity to establish symbiosis with the plant when the most favorable rhizobial strain was not present in the rhizosphere. Nodule occupancy rates of the most favorable rhizobial strain depended on the competitiveness of other rhizobial strains in the rhizosphere and the environmental adaptability of the favorable rhizobial strain (in this case, to mild vermiculite or hostile sandy soil). To produce high nodulation and efficient nitrogen fixation, the most favorable rhizobial strain should be selected and inoculated into the rhizosphere of legume plants under optimum environmental conditions. 相似文献

The common nodulation genes of Astragalus sinicus rhizobia are conserved despite chromosomal diversity 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

The nodulation genes of Mesorhizobium sp. (Astragalus sinicus) strain 7653R were cloned by functional complementation of Sinorhizobium meliloti nod mutants. The common nod genes, nodD, nodA, and nodBC, were identified by heterologous hybridization and sequence analysis. The nodA gene was found to be separated from nodBC by approximately 22 kb and was divergently transcribed. The 2. 0-kb nodDBC region was amplified by PCR from 24 rhizobial strains nodulating A. sinicus, which represented different chromosomal genotypes and geographic origins. No polymorphism was found in the size of PCR products, suggesting that the separation of nodA from nodBC is a common feature of A. sinicus rhizobia. Sequence analysis of the PCR-amplified nodA gene indicated that seven strains representing different 16S and 23S ribosomal DNA genotypes had identical nodA sequences. These data indicate that, whereas microsymbionts of A. sinicus exhibit chromosomal diversity, their nodulation genes are conserved, supporting the hypothesis of horizontal transfer of nod genes among diverse recipient bacteria. 相似文献

A negative interspecific correlation between the degree of habitat specialization and the size of a species' geographic range has been documented for several free living groups of organisms, providing support for the niche breadth hypothesis. In contrast, practically nothing is known about the geographic range sizes of parasitic organisms and their determinants. In the context of the niche breadth hypothesis, parasites represent ideal study systems, because of the well documented variation in host specificity among parasite species. Here, we investigated the relationship between host specificity (a measure of niche breadth) and geographic range size among flea species parasitic on small mammals, using data from seven distinct geographical regions. Two measures of host specificity were used: the number of host species used by a flea species, and a measure of the average taxonomic distance between the host species used by a flea; the latter index provides an evolutionary perspective on host specificity. After correcting for phylogenetic influences, and using either of our two measures of host specificity, the degree of host specificity of fleas was negatively correlated with the size of their geographic range in all seven regions studied here, with only one minor exception. Overall, these results provide strong support for the niche breadth hypothesis, although other explanations cannot be ruled out. 相似文献

Isoflavonoids are derived from a flavonone intermediate, naringenin, that is ubiquitously present in plants, and play a critical role in plant development and defence response. Isoflavonoids secreted by the legumes also play an important role in promoting the formation of nitrogen-fixing nodules by symbiotic rhizobia. In these plants, the key enzyme that redirects phenylpropanoid pathway intermediates from flavonoids to isoflavonoids is the cytochrome P450 mono-oxygenase, isoflavone synthase. In an effort to develop a rice variety possessing the ability to induce nodulation (nod) genes in rhizobia, the IFS gene from soybean was incorporated into rice (Oryza sativa L. cv. Murasaki R86) under the control of the 35S promoter. The presence of IFS in transgenic rice was confirmed by PCR and Southern blot analysis. Analyses of the 35S-IFS transgenic lines demonstrated that the expression of the IFS gene led to the production of the isoflavone genistein in rice tissues. These results showed that the soybean IFS gene-expressed enzyme is active in the R86 rice plant, and that the naringenin intermediate of the anthocyanin pathway is available as a substrate for the introduced foreign enzyme. The genistein produced in rice cells was present in a glycoside form, indicating that endogenous glycosyltransferases were capable of recognizing genistein as a substrate. Studies with rhizobia demonstrated that the expression of isoflavone synthase confers rice plants with the ability to produce flavonoids that are able to induce nod gene expression, albeit to varied degrees, in different rhizobia. 相似文献

The process of local adaptation creates diversity among allopatric populations, and may eventually lead to speciation. Plant-feeding insect populations that specialize on different host species provide an excellent opportunity to evaluate the causes of ecological specialization and the subsequent consequences for diversity. In this study, we used geographically separated Drosophila mettleri populations that specialize on different host cacti to examine oviposition preference for and larval performance on an array of natural and non-natural hosts (eight total). We found evidence of local adaptation in performance on saguaro cactus (Carnegiea gigantea) for populations that are typically associated with this host, and to chemically divergent prickly pear species (Opuntia spp.) in a genetically isolated population on Santa Catalina Island. Moreover, each population exhibited reduced performance on the alternative host. This finding is consistent with trade-offs associated with adaptation to these chemically divergent hosts, although we also discuss alternative explanations for this pattern. For oviposition preference, Santa Catalina Island flies were more likely to oviposit on some prickly pear species, but all populations readily laid eggs on saguaro. Experiments with non-natural hosts suggest that factors such as ecological opportunity may play a more important role than host plant chemistry in explaining the lack of natural associations with some hosts. 相似文献

Mesorhizobium muleiense, Mesorhizobium mediterraneum and Mesorhizobium ciceri are chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) rhizobia that share a high similarity of the symbiotic genes nodC and nifH, but they have different geographic distributions. M. muleiense has been isolated and found only in alkaline soils of Xinjiang, China, whereas the other two strains have been found in the Mediterranean and India. To investigate the species stability of M. muleiense during natural evolution and its capability of competitive nodulation against the other two exotic species, re-sampling of nodules in the field and competition experiments between the three species were conducted. The results showed that the predominant microsymbiont associated with chickpea grown in Xinjiang was still M. muleiense, but the predominant genotypes of M. muleiense had changed significantly during the four years since a previous survey. The data also showed that M. mediterraneum and M. ciceri were more competitive than the residential strain of M. muleiense CCBAU 83963T in sterilized vermiculite or soils from Xinjiang. However, in non-sterilized soils, M. muleiense was the predominant nodule occupier. These results indicated that natural or adapting evolution of M. muleiense was occurring in fields subjected to changing environmental factors. In addition, the biogeography and symbiotic associations of rhizobia with their host legumes were also influenced by biological factors in the soil, such as indigenous rhizobia and other organisms. 相似文献
